"Then why do you spend every day with Beth and never play with me?"
Sophia still stared at Karl angrily.
Carl smiled helplessly and rubbed Sophia's head. Hmm, it was not greasy and had a fresh fragrance.
Sophia obediently shook her head gently, as if to ask for help from Carl's palm, but more like a kitten acting coquettishly, rubbing against him.
"Actually, I haven't been with Beth for long. I went to the small building mainly to find Hershel. Um, to talk to Hershel about some serious business."
Karl lied with his eyes open without blushing at all.
"Really? But..." Sophia felt something was wrong, but she couldn't put it into words.
"Really." Carl nodded, "Including now. I'm just going to look for Hershel later. If you want, you can come with me."
"Okay, I want to go with you." Sophia quickly hugged Carl's arm tightly.
"Okay, but do you want to drink some milk first?" Carl raised the milk in his hand to gesture.
"Oh, right! I remember now! Why do you still deliver milk to Beth every day!" Sophia suddenly remembered and immediately turned from a docile kitten into a furious driver.
Karl was stunned, his back felt a little cold, and he hesitated for a long time before saying, "How do you know I delivered milk to Beth?"
"Isn't it?" Sophia said uncertainly.
Carl reacted instantly, "Of course not, I usually send it to Hershel. You should know that Hershel is a very kind old man. I am very grateful that he took us in.
And old people, like us, need milk, but sometimes Hershel won't accept it, so he gives it to his little daughter. Do you understand, Sophia?"
"Really?" Sophia looked unconvinced.
"Oh, Sophia, you don't believe me? Well, okay..." Carl shook his head disappointedly and turned to leave.
"No, it's not, Carl, I believe you."
Sophia was already holding Carl's arm tightly, so Carl could only turn around and could not leave. Now Sophia held him even tighter.
"Well...be good, drink your milk first, okay? I have to go talk to Hershel about something, I'll come back to see you later." Carl said with a smile.
"But...but you just said you could take me there." Sophia pouted in dissatisfaction.
"Be good, I'll be back soon." Carl used his finger to press down Sophia's pouting lips. "Herschel and I are discussing serious matters, so it's not appropriate for you to go. How about this, after I come back, I'll stay with you all day."
"Really?" Sophia blinked her big watery eyes and looked at Carl.
"Of course. Okay, just wait for me. I'll be back soon."
Carl put a box of milk in Sophia's hand and rubbed Sophia's head.
Sophia finally let go of Karl's arm reluctantly and said timidly, "Then come back soon."
"Of course, I'll do it as soon as possible, I promise." Carl couldn't help but feel soft in his heart. He rubbed Sophia's head again and turned away.
After turning around, Karl's face returned to calm. No, not calm, but irritable, which he could only conceal with an expression as calm as possible.
My emotions seem to be out of control lately.
Carl knew, but he didn't know what the problem was.
Maybe the best option now is to tell Sophia that I like Beth and we should keep our distance.
But saying this to a little girl doesn't seem right. Yes, Sophia might just be unhappy because her playmates don't play with her.
But Carl seemed to know that if he continued like this, it would be easy for problems to arise, as Sophia's attitude towards him had become somewhat obvious.
Although she is still young and may not know what this means, Sofia already has a clear sense of dependence on her.
Was it because of the time on the roof of the RV?
Carl shook his head and cleared his mind.
Carl could already imagine how sad Sophia would be if he told her, and he didn't want to see such a scene.
Never mind. Don't think about it.
"Knock, knock…"
"Who?" Maggie's voice.
Originally, the Hershel family didn't have the habit of closing the door during the day, but because there are so many people now, closing the door seems necessary.
"It's me, Carl," Carl said.
The door was opened, and Maggie saw Karl smiling, then glanced at the milk in Karl's hand, and said jokingly,
"I really don't know when someone will deliver milk."
Carl smiled nonchalantly, "I'll talk to Glenn later and ask him to come with me every day."
"You know? Come on, you're just going to look for Beth? It's cold now, and Beth doesn't get up so early. Maybe you can go to her room yourself."
Maggie was much more generous than Glenn, without the slightest bit of shyness or embarrassment.
Carl hesitated for a moment, then shook his head, "No, I'll go find Hershel."
Maggie said, "Okay, study, go by yourself, I have to go feed your Bucephalus."
"Mine?" Carl was stunned.
"Not yet, huh." Maggie nodded, smiled, patted Carl on the shoulder, and walked out the door with the basket.
Karl shook his head, put the milk on the dining table, went to the study and knocked on the door.
"Enter."
Carl walked in.
Hershel looked up at Carl and said, "Are you here to return my books? Let me make it clear first, you are not allowed to take any of my books until you return those three books."
Carl laughed and said, "I haven't finished reading it yet, old man. You should be in bed in this kind of weather."
"I'm used to it. Okay, what can I do for you?" Hershel pointed at the sofa and motioned Carl to sit down first.
Carl sat down and waited quietly. Not long after, Hershel finished marking the book, and came to the sofa. He picked up the teapot on the coffee table and poured a cup of hot tea for Carl and himself respectively.
Putting down the teapot, Hershel sat down beside him, "Tell me, Carl, what do you want?"
Karl said hesitantly, "I'm afraid you won't be too happy with this conversation."
Hershel raised an eyebrow. The last time Carl said something like this was last time, and last time, it was indeed unpleasant.
"Unpleasant, what else can make me unhappy now? Even if you kneel down and propose to Beth now, I will be shocked at most, not unhappy."
Carl knew Hershel was joking, so he didn't take it too seriously. After hesitating for a moment, Carl asked,
"Herschel, do you feel that this disaster is nothing? Not to mention the great flood in the Bible, it is even worse than the great plagues that have occurred in history."
Hershel was stunned for a moment, then sat up straight, frowning in thought.
Carl continued, "What's the problem? Hershel, do you feel safe? This farm seems like a paradise. Everything in the outside world has nothing to do with this place. Your family is still living a life similar to that before the disaster."
"Carl, what do you mean?" Hershel frowned and looked at Carl.
