"Strange, they're calling us to the central base" - said Lindow with a frown after killing the next [Aragami]. They had been on this mission for a whole week and were currently halfway through the list.
"Maybe they're giving us a break?" - Sakuya asked as she wiped the sweat from her forehead.
"You're not fooling anyone, Sakuya."
Tsubaki had been communicating with the group from the [First Unit]'s base of operations throughout the mission to keep the team flapping at the slightest situation.
"I didn't need you to dash my hopes so quickly" - Sakuya snorted with a frown - "But if it's not for a break, I guess it's for a mission with a high level of danger."
"Exactly" - replied Tsubaki from the other end of the line - "According to the information I managed to get, [Calamity] destroyed an entire squadron of [God Eater]"
"[Calamity]?" - Lenka asked with a frown because he had never heard anything about that name before.
"It's a new [Aragami] that appeared during the last few weeks" - answered Tsubaki with a frown because she as well as the other senior members of the group knew about the origin of the beast - "According to the report, the group of [God Eater], decided to attack [Calamity] and it counterattacked, destroying the squadron with utmost ease and devouring the captain"
The expression of those present changed, with the only exception of Tatenashi and Houki who continued as if nothing had happened.
"Did [Calamity] kill them in cold blood?" - Sophia asked in terror.
"No, according to the information I managed to excavate before it was erased, [Calamity] used [Mega Flare] in order to defend himself" - answered Tsubaki seriously - "This explosion caused a shockwave and destroyed the parachutes of the soldiers who were trying to escape".
"And the others?" - Sophia asked as she let out a sigh, at least now she knew that Cloud had not caused damage because of his instincts, but out of self-defence, though she still felt strange at the idea of accepting it so easily.
"They died because the pilot escaped" - answered Tsubaki seriously - "Nobody knew how to control the plane and it crashed into a mountain, there were no survivors".
"I see" - muttered Sofia as she nodded.
"Does that mean [Calamity] only killed one of the soldiers, the leader of the group?" - Lindow asked as he raised an eyebrow.
"Exactly" - nodded Tsubaki calmly.
"They seem to be trying to defend [Calamity's] actions, or at least make sure that he didn't cause that much damage" - said Alisa, who felt that there was something strange about the current situation of her superiors.
Tsubaki was silent for a few seconds before shaking her head - "That information is classified, and as long as Tatenashi does not inform you, you have no right to know more than you have to."
"I regret my words" - Alisa replied as she apologised for her actions.
"Regarding the orders from the central base, they have higher priority to the orders from [Far East]" - Tsubaki said seriously - "That is why it is time for you to return, as for the cadets, Lenka, Kota and Alisa, they will stay with me at the [First Unit] base."
"That's not fair!" - Lenka exclaimed as she stood up abruptly - "We're members of the [First Unit] too!"
"These are orders, Cadet Lenka" - said Tsubaki neutrally - "You will continue with the training program Cloud left for you while the others prepare for their mission."
Lenka fell silent as he felt the cold stare of his former instructor before nodding. He knew better than to get on this woman's bad side.
"How dangerous is [Calamity]?" - Kota asked as he tried to change the subject and thus help his friend.
"Very dangerous" - answered Tsubaki without a second thought - "[Calamity] has managed to devour three [Deusphages]."
"¡¿3?!" - exclaimed the cadets in terror.
"Yes, and the worst thing is that [Calamity] gets stronger with each [Aragami] it devours" - answered Tsubaki seriously - "And it does it without the need to evolve".
". . ." - the cadets felt a shiver run down their spines when they heard this.
"Somehow, I feel that [Calamity] is not a bad name for that thing" - Kota said as he swallowed a large amount of saliva because he could feel his throat getting dry - "That animal is a calamity."
"Calm down, you guys won't have to go and face [Calamity]." - Tsubaki said neutrally - "And from what we managed to find out, [Calamity] is peaceful unless you attack it first."
"A peaceful [Aragami]?" - Lenka asked sarcastically - "The only way those things are peaceful, is if they are dead."
"This time I share Lenka's opinion" - said Alisa calmly - "The [Aragami] are instinct-driven beasts and we don't know when [Calamity] will be like the others."
The members of the [First Unit] only kept silent because they knew that the cadets' words were not wrong, or at least they would be if [Calamity] was an [Aragami].
"The orders have already been assigned, it's time for them to go back" - Tsubaki said as she decided to change the subject - "Johannes asked them to leave the samples at [Far East] before going to the Central Base."
"That bastard has to be happy with the situation" - Sakuya snorted as she frowned.
Soma was silent when he heard this, though internally he shared the same opinion as his teammate.
"We'll be back for now" - said Lindow after keeping silent for a second - "Tsubaki, did you manage to discover the connection between all the [Aragami] we hunted?"
"From a genetic point of view, there is no connection between them, but I did discover one small detail" - answered Tsubaki seriously - "And that is that all those species have compatible qualities between them."
"Compatible qualities?" - Lenka asked in confusion.
"Exactly" - replied Tsubaki as her expression turned almost neutral - "Each of these [Aragami] have unique abilities or qualities"
"I see" - muttered Lindow as she narrowed her eyes - "Separately they are useless, but together"
"That's what I fear" - replied Tsubaki, but her expression changed as she watched the signal start to fade until after a few seconds the image disappeared.
"Tsubaki!" - Lindow exclaimed in terror as he saw how the signal had disappeared - "Shit, we have to go back!"
"OK!" - exclaimed the other members of the [First Unit].
"What is it or what are you doing, father" - thought Soma as he growled in irritation.
* * * * *
"Boys!" - Tsubaki exclaimed as she tried to contact the group again, only to see how all attempts to communicate with the outside had been disabled.
"I always knew you were too smart for my taste, Tsubaki-san" - Tsubaki opened her eyes in surprise as she heard a familiar voice from her monitor, only to see Johannes was giving her a cold stare - "And now it's too late to fix that detail!"
"Johannes" - Tsubaki growled as she looked at her former superior - "You are trying to create a new [Aragami] with the core of [Tsukuyomi] and all these [Aragami] we managed to capture."
"There's nothing to be gained by hiding it now that you've discovered me" - Johannes replied as he relaxed a little - "Yes, I intend to create the strongest [Aragami] ever known, one that is capable of devouring the world while I move the most skilled humans to a base on the moon"
"That's crazy!" - Tsubaki exclaimed angrily.
"No, it's the perfect plan" - replied Johannes with a huge grin - "With this, humanity will be able to start from scratch, and the moon is the perfect place to start!"
"You are insane" - said Tsubaki seriously - "The moon is uninhabitable".
"That is where you are wrong, Tsubaki" - replied Johannes with disdain - "I have been the one who has modified all the reports related to the moon, that is why no one knows that it is possible to inhabit that place."
"What do you mean" - said Tsubaki with a frown as he felt a shiver run down her back.
"That with some slight modifications, the moon can produce enough flora to be able to start from scratch" - replied Johannes with a huge smile on his face - "No, even by transplanting some more resistant species, a repopulation on the moon would be possible in 6 months".
"Impossible" - muttered Tsubaki while shaking her head because the idea was crazy.
"I get nothing by lying to you, Tsubaki" - replied Johannes as his eyes glittered slightly - "I already have all my calculations done and the probability of success of my plan, is 99%."
". . ." - Tsubaki was silent when she heard this because Johannes' words did not make any sense.
"OK, I think we have talked enough" - Johannes said as the fortified gates of the [First Unit] base, began to open.
"!" - Tsubaki's eyes widened in terror when she noticed this and she growled fiercely when she saw how her former superior had been distracting her.
"My words are not lies, Tsubaki" - Johannes said coldly - "Now, I kindly ask you to open the doors and allow yourself to be captured, I promise you that my treatment of you will not be bad, after all, I need you in an excellent state."
"Hostage, huh?" - Tsubaki said as a melancholy expression appeared on her face.
"Exactly, without you, the [First Unit] would never deliver the cores I need" - Johannes replied as the sounds of the gates being attacked continued to echo in the place- "But more than anything, I need you so that [Calamity] does not come to me".
Tsubaki was silent when she heard this as she sighed regretfully. There was nothing she could do at this point but give up.
