Chương 80: Shadow Fire
Adrian's laughter echoed through the ballroom, a twisted and unhinged sound that sent shivers down Lyra's spine. She stared at him in disbelief, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and betrayal. "How could you, Adrian? You promised me it wasn't you, that you had nothing to do with this. You lied to me!"
Adrian's laughter only intensified, his eyes gleaming with a malevolent light. "Oh, Lyra, you naive little alchemist. This is just the beginning. I've always found you fascinating - your intelligence, your beauty, and your courage. You would have made the perfect sacrifice for my lord."
Clara's eyes widened in horror. "Your lord? What are you talking about, Adrian?"
"Enough talk," Adrian snarled, his voice dripping with malice. He summoned three dark, fiery balls of essence energy, each one pulsing with a sinister power. With a flick of his wrist, he sent the orbs hurtling towards Lyra, Clara, and Lilith, their faces illuminated by the twisted light.
But just as the orbs were about to make contact, a volley of wooden stakes shot through the air, shattering the essence energy and sending splinters flying in all directions. Lyra turned to see Elias standing tall and proud, no longer in his suit but instead wearing his resistance club camouflage. Behind him stood three other resistance members, their weapons at the ready.
"Give it up, Adrian!" Elias shouted, his voice filled with a fierce determination. "Your gig is up. We won't let you hurt anyone else."
But Adrian merely laughed, his form beginning to flicker and fade as shadows wrapped around him like a cloak. "Oh, you foolish mortals. This is far from over. In fact, it's only just begun."
With a final, mocking bow, Adrian vanished in a swirl of shadowy flames, leaving behind only the echoes of his laughter and the scent of brimstone.
Lyra fell to her knees, tears streaming down her face as the weight of Adrian's betrayal crashed down upon her. She had trusted him, confided in him, and all along, he had been plotting against her and the entire academy.
But as she knelt there, surrounded by the chaos and destruction of the masquerade ball, Lyra felt a new resolve growing within her. She looked up at Elias and her friends, her eyes blazing with a fierce determination.
"We have to stop him," she said, her voice steady and strong despite the tears on her cheeks. "Adrian, and whoever this 'lord' of his is. We can't let them hurt anyone else. We have to find out what they're planning and put an end to it, once and for all."
Elias nodded, reaching out to help Lyra to her feet. "We will, Lyra. Together, we'll unravel this mystery and stop Adrian and his master. I promise you that."
As the group gathered around her, their faces set with the same determination, Lyra knew that the true battle had only just begun.
No matter how dark the shadows grew or how powerful their enemies became, Lyra and her friends would fight to protect Ashborne Academy and all those within it.
