Chương 20: BOSS pokemon
The next day, Xavier went to Nurse Joy and collected Mankey from her, paying 150 pokecoins - 100 for treatment and 50 for the stay at the Pokémon Center.
He then decided to battle Pidgeys back at Route 1. When he reached the area, he started engaging in battles with the Pidgeys. He used his talent "Inspect" on them at the beginning of each battle to check their levels and moves. However, he found that none of them were particularly impressive and didn't pose a threat to Mankey, as none of them knew any flying-type moves.
Mankey easily defeated the Pidgeys, but since he had reached level 8 the previous day, leveling up had become much more difficult. It took constant battling for 4 hours before Mankey finally reached level 9.
Both Mankey and Xavier were exhausted after the intense training session, and Xavier had also used up his remaining 2 potions. With evening approaching, Xavier decided to battle for 1 more hour before heading back to the Pokémon Center.
Lost in his thoughts, Xavier was suddenly caught off guard as a Pidgey appeared out of nowhere and used Gust on Mankey, dealing a significant amount of damage. Realizing the danger, Xavier quickly snapped out of his trance and used "Inspect" on the unexpected Pidgey.

Xavier was shocked to see that this was a level 9 Pidgey. When he had used "Inspect" on the other Pidgeys before, this one didn't appear in the list. Additionally, in the original Pokémon game, there was no way a level 9 Pidgey could appear in Route 1.
He noticed that "BOSS" was written right next to the name of the Pidgey. Xavier guessed that it might be some kind of hidden event, triggered under specific conditions.
He quickly decided to come up with a strategy since Mankey was already exhausted, and being hit by Gust had significantly lowered its HP. "Mankey, use Leer!" exclaimed Xavier. The move decreased the Pidgey's defense by one stage. In response, the Pidgey used Tackle, but Xavier ordered Mankey to dodge and immediately counter with Night Slash. Mankey skillfully dodged the attack and struck the Pidgey with Night Slash, dealing a massive blow.
The angered Pidgey chirped furiously and then used Gust again. Xavier quickly commanded, "Mankey, hurry up and hide behind the tree!" Mankey swiftly followed the order, taking cover behind a nearby tree just in time. Xavier let out a deep breath, relieved that Mankey had evaded the powerful move. If the Gust had hit Mankey, he might have been defeated.
Since the Pidgey's attack missed, Xavier ordered Mankey to end the fight with another Night Slash. The Pidgey fainted after the intense battle. Xavier considered capturing it, but before he could try, the Pidgey vanished into thin air, as if it had never existed.
Xavier was startled by this, but he concluded that BOSS Pokémon might not be catchable.
He then recalled Mankey into its Pokéball and headed towards the Pokémon Center. He felt satisfied that Mankey had finally reached level 10, completing 1/3rd of the mission.
