Apparently, the catch was that the experiment succeeded but also released enough energy to vaporise everyone within close distance, making sure that he would not have to fight through a horde of HYDRA agents the moment he is transported into an unknown universe. It might get hard to assimilate himself back into society but that was for later. Right now, he has made his choice.
