Seeing that the Magikarp was unharmed, Nurse Joy let out a sigh of relief. With a display of incredible strength, she hoisted the massive Magikarp into the air and tossed it back into the puddle.
"Crash—!" The impact created a huge splash of water, droplets raining down around the puddle. Nurse Joy didn't flinch or try to dodge the water, letting it soak her without concern.
"That's... amazing," Ash murmured, astonished. Misty and Tracey were equally dumbfounded.
Nurse Joy's strength rivalled that of Silver-level Fighting-type Pokémon—and perhaps even surpassed it.
"You need to rest well now," Nurse Joy said gently to the Magikarp as it poked its head out of the water. "I won't leave today, but I'll come back to check on you tomorrow."
"Carp!" The Magikarp responded with a low cry, clearly reluctant to part with Nurse Joy. Nevertheless, it understood her words and obediently submerged itself in the puddle.
Turning back toward Ash and his friends, Nurse Joy asked, "So, where exactly are you from?"
Back at the camp, the group explained their situation in detail, and Nurse Joy followed them to confirm their story.
After inspecting the camp, she was satisfied that Ash, Misty, and Tracey had indeed arrived on the island by accident.
"Nurse Joy, are you here just to care for that Magikarp?" Misty asked curiously during dinner. Ash and Tracey, equally intrigued, waited for her answer.
Ash faintly remembered a story involving a giant Magikarp in the Orange Islands. If memory serves him right, it eventually evolved into a Gyarados of tremendous size, at least three times larger than an ordinary one.
"Yes and no," Nurse Joy replied, nodding briefly before shaking her head.
"I'm not here specifically for Magikarp. This region has several small islands, none of which have Pokémon Centers. I travel between them to provide medical care," she explained with a kind smile.
"Travelling to offer treatment... That's so like Nurse Joy," Misty said, her admiration evident. Ash and Tracey nodded in agreement. The Joy family was universally respected for their dedication and compassion.
"Then what's the story with that Magikarp?" Misty asked, her curiosity growing as she recalled its immense size.
Nurse Joy smiled as she stared into the campfire, her gaze distant. "I first met Magikarp by chance years ago," she began.
When Nurse Joy was ten, she found the Magikarp injured and far smaller than a typical one. It was barely half the size of an ordinary carp in the world.
After treating it, she released it back into the sea. But the Magikarp didn't leave; instead, it stayed nearby, occasionally playing with her on the island.
As time passed, Nurse Joy grew older, and the Magikarp began to experience an unusual growth spurt, becoming larger and larger.
When she became an adult, Nurse Joy realized the implications of its size. If others discovered the Magikarp, it might be captured.
While a responsible Trainer might treat it well, there was always the risk of it falling into the hands of malicious individuals seeking to exploit or experiment on it. As a Joy, she was well aware of the darker side of the world.
To protect it, she moved the Magikarp to this uninhabited island, where it could live safely. Over time, the Magikarp continued to grow until it reached its current size.
As its body grew, so did its nutritional needs. Ordinary food was no longer enough to sustain it, so Nurse Joy began bringing enhancement potions to supplement its diet. She had come today for just that reason, coincidentally meeting Ash and his group.
After hearing her story, Ash, Misty, and Tracey could only marvel at the wonders of the world.
The Orange Islands seemed full of mysteries, from the Crystal Onix they had encountered earlier to this giant Magikarp.
That night, Nurse Joy returned to the small clinic she had built in the forest, while Ash and his friends camped near their shelter.
Although Ash briefly considered capturing the giant Magikarp, the idea was quickly dismissed.
A Pokémon of that size undoubtedly possessed immense potential, and its evolution into a Gyarados would make it nearly invincible. However, the financial burden of caring for such a Pokémon was staggering.
Even with the monetary rewards he received for becoming a Great Ball-level Trainer, Ash couldn't afford the cost of feeding Magikarp, let alone what it would require as a Gyarados.
The situation reminded him of the Crystal Onix. Although he had been tempted to catch it, the Onix's unique diet of crystals made it an impractical choice for an ordinary Trainer like himself.
The next morning, Ash woke early to exercise his Pokémon. Nurse Joy joined them at the camp for breakfast as promised, taking a keen interest in Ash's team.
Charizard, in particular, drew her attention. The golden flame on its tail was striking, radiating an energy that reminded her of the sun.
After breakfast, the group accompanied Nurse Joy to the puddle to check on Magikarp. Nurse Joy carefully examined its condition and fed it another enhancement potion to ensure its nutritional needs were met.
With her task complete, Nurse Joy prepared to continue her work for the day: travelling to several nearby islands to treat injured Pokémon.
Ash and the others, intrigued by the islands they had yet to explore, asked Nurse Joy about them.
She explained that this island was the most remote in the area, rarely visited by anyone, which made it the perfect home for Magikarp.
After some discussion, Ash and his friends decided to stay on the island temporarily to assist Nurse Joy with her medical rounds while giving Lapras some extra training.
Leaving Charizard and Blastoise behind to guard the camp, the group set out on Lapras, accompanying Nurse Joy to the surrounding islands.
"This is much faster than rowing by myself," Nurse Joy said, smiling gratefully. "Thank you for your help."
"It's no trouble. We're happy to assist," Ash replied. In truth, the idea had come from Tracey, who wanted to document the process as part of his observations.
With that, the group began their rounds, eager to experience the unique journey alongside Nurse Joy.
