Capítulo 14: Heatbearers

Idris plummeted through the air, the world around him a chaotic blur of sound and motion. The roar of the waterfall thundered in his ears, drowning out all thoughts save one: Nyx. He stretched out his hand, fingers grasping for the tiny creature he could barely see against the swirling darkness.

The icy water enveloped him with a shock, sending a jolt through his body. He fought against the current, instinctively kicking his legs to propel himself deeper, his heart pounding like a war drum. The water was a frigid grip, tightening around him as he struggled to focus. The waterfall above cascaded in a violent torrent, but beneath its surface, an eerie calm settled. He had to find Nyx.

With a final burst of determination, Idris kicked harder, pushing against the churning waves. He felt the pressure of the water pulling him deeper, but he refused to be swept away. Just as he thought he might succumb to despair, a flash of movement caught his eye. There! Just a few feet away, Nyx was tumbling through the water, its tiny limbs thrashing wildly.

"Got you!" Idris shouted, though his voice was swallowed by the water. He lunged forward, stretching out his arm. The distance between them felt like an eternity, but he couldn't falter. With a desperate grasp, his fingers closed around Nyx's small body. Relief flooded through him as he pulled the creature close, cradling it against his chest.

The rush of the waterfall loomed above them, and Idris felt the pull of the current trying to drag him under. He needed to get to the surface. Gritting his teeth, he kicked his legs once more, propelling himself upward.

The light above grew brighter as he neared the surface, and with one last surge, he broke free of the water, gasping for air. Idris coughed and sputtered, the cool night air filling his lungs as he clung to Nyx, who had gone eerily still in his grasp. "Come on, buddy, breathe!" he urged, shaking the little creature gently.

To his relief, Nyx's tiny body began to squirm, and a series of soft, choked sounds escaped it. Idris held on tightly, his heart racing as he maneuvered toward the shore, where the rocky bank jutted out against the churning water. He needed to get them both to safety.

With all his strength, he swam toward the edge, using the last of his energy to haul himself and Nyx onto the rocky bank. They landed with a thud, the ground solid beneath him. Idris rolled onto his back, chest heaving, the weight of the night pressing down on him. He looked down at Nyx, still trembling but alive, its wide eyes reflecting the moonlight.

"Thank the stars," he whispered, relief washing over him like the warmth of sunlight. He wrapped his arms around Nyx, feeling the little creature's heartbeat slowly return to normal. The storm continued to rage around them, but Idris found solace in the bond they shared.

After a moment to catch his breath, he glanced around the cave, taking in the rocky walls and the mist that hung in the air. The sound of rain drumming against the earth outside filled the silence, but within the cave, a different kind of quiet settled. Idris closed his eyes, exhaustion threatening to overtake him.

Suddenly, a flicker of light caught his attention, drawing him from the edge of sleep. He opened his eyes to see a small glow emerging from the darkness. At first, he thought it was a firefly, but as it drew closer, he realized it was something more: a heatbearer, a creature of soft, warm light that danced in the air.

The heatbearers swirled around Nyx, collecting around the little lizard-like creature. Idris furrowed his brow, confusion washing over him. "What are you doing?" he murmured, instinctively reaching out to brush the glowing insects away.

But as he did, he paused, noticing how Nyx had closed its eyes, seemingly granting permission to the heatbearers to settle on its body. The glowing orbs wrapped around Nyx like a warm embrace, illuminating the cave with a soft, gentle light. Idris watched in fascination, his earlier confusion replaced by wonder.

"What is this?" he whispered, his eyes wide as the heatbearers began to drift toward him as well, settling around his shoulders and arms. He felt their warmth spreading through him, soothing the chill of the storm and the exhaustion that weighed heavily on his limbs.

Idris turned to Nyx, whose eyes slowly opened, revealing a deep intelligence that left him speechless. "Did you do this, little guy?" he asked, voice barely above a whisper.

To his astonishment, when Nyx looked back at him, it was as if the creature had responded—an understanding passing between them. Idris felt a warmth enveloping his heart, the bond between them deepening. The tiny being's gaze seemed to affirm his question, as if to say, "Yes."

The heatbearers continued to dance around them, their glow a comforting presence amidst the darkness of the cave. Idris leaned back against the cool stone, the warmth of the creatures wrapping him in a cocoon of safety. His mind buzzed with questions, but for now, he allowed himself to simply feel—safe, sheltered, and connected to this extraordinary little companion.

As the storm raged outside, Idris closed his eyes again, a sense of peace washing over him. He didn't know what awaited them beyond the cave, but in this moment, with Nyx and the heatbearers surrounding them, he felt a glimmer of hope in the dark.
