Idris drifted into a deep sleep, the warmth of the heatbearers fading as dawn approached. The storm outside had calmed, leaving only the soft sound of water trickling from the waterfall. He lay on the cool cave floor, Nyx curled against his chest, and for a moment, peace enveloped him.
As sunlight crept in, Idris stirred, blinking awake to find a small boy looming over him. The boy had wild hair and bright, curious eyes that sparkled with mischief. But there was something unsettling about his presence in this desolate place.
Idris was startled but did well in hiding his surprise "Who are you?" Idris croaked quietly and suspiciously, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep.
"I'm Lio," the boy replied, a wide grin spreading across his face. "I worship the One Who Watches Over the People."
Idris raised an eyebrow at the vague description but as a recollection of a long time ago memory hit him Idris's heart raced as he processed the boy's words. The One Who Watches—stories whispered of a deity that protected the lost and the wandering. But what did that mean for him? He sat up slowly, a cautious instinct nagging at the back of his mind.
"Do you know of a temple nearby in this forest?" Idris asked, keeping his tone neutral and scanning the cave for any signs of danger, doubting even the small boy who would hardly reach his hip.
At the mention of a temple, Lio's eyes lit up. "That's where I live! Come, I'll show you!"
Idris hesitated, uncertainty swirling within him. "Wait, is it safe? This place—it feels dangerous."
Lio shrugged, undeterred. He jumped onto a rock ledge, grasping a sturdy outcrop to pull himself up. Idris felt a twinge of anxiety watching him. "You shouldn't be here alone," he murmured, glancing around at the sheer drop and jagged rocks. The sight of such a young child in this perilous environment made his heart race.
"I'm fine! Just follow me!" Lio insisted, his voice bright with enthusiasm. Yet, the trust he felt in the boy was tempered by a nagging worry. What if Lio was leading him into a trap? Still, the prospect of the temple and the answers it might hold beckoned him.
With a deep breath, Idris climbed after the boy, every instinct urging him to remain cautious. As they approached the edge of the cliff, Lio dashed towards a waterfall that cascaded down the rocky face. "Look!" Lio called, excitement radiating from him. "There's a cave behind the waterfall!"
Idris felt his heart skip a beat. "How do we get there?" he asked, his voice steady but laced with apprehension.
"Just follow me!" Lio said, darting ahead. Idris hesitated, glancing back at the steep drop. Could he really trust this child?
With a deep breath, he steeled himself and peeked through the falling water. Gathering his courage, he stepped through, feeling the cold spray against his skin.
The cave behind the waterfall was dark but inviting. As he stepped inside, he glanced at Lio, who was waiting for him with an eager smile. Yet the tension in Idris's chest tightened.
The cave was empty, its walls rough and damp, but something felt different. Lio closed his eyes, raising his arms as if to summon something from within. Idris watched cautiously as an intricate rune appeared on Lio's arm, glowing with a soft purple light. Idris felt that the situation was incredulous and felt too....easy?
With a wave of his hand, Lio chanted something under his breath. The cave creaked and groaned, as if awakening from a deep slumber. A section of the wall slowly parted like a door, revealing a passage that shimmered with ethereal light.
"There!" Lio exclaimed, bouncing on his toes. "That's the way!"
Idris felt a rush of exhilaration but remained on edge. "Lio, this place—it feels foreign and...private. Are you sure i can be here?"
Lio nodded, his expression turning serious. "The temple holds many secrets and welcomes all to look for them. I'm sure you'll find yours."
Idris took a deep breath, feeling the weight of his responsibility. He needed to find Garren and Erena; they had been through so much together. But the allure of the temple, of uncovering the truth about his past, had become irresistible now.
With Nyx still nestled in his arms, Idris stepped forward, the urge to protect himself mingling with the need to explore. He crossed the threshold into the new world beyond, the vibrant air filled with a sense of possibility.
As they entered, the atmosphere shifted dramatically. The air felt charged with magic, and the landscape opened up before them like a vibrant painting. Lush greenery surrounded them, and colors danced in the light, creating a breathtaking tapestry of life and wonder.
Idris stood in awe, feeling a sense of belonging he had never experienced before. "Is this the temple?" he whispered, eyes wide with wonder.
Lio nodded, his eyes filled with determination. "Believe it or not this place, even the nature is considered the temple. The temple isn't a building made up of rocks , it's the entire cliff that the waterfall protects."
With that, Idris took his first steps into the unknown, the caution still lingering in his mind. He couldn't shake the feeling of uncertainty that accompanied him, but he felt the weight of destiny pulling him forward, with Lio by his side and Nyx cradled in his arms he felt his loneliness had yet to come.
