Predators and trees go along well enough. Humans are also top predators. So Nyrielle worries too much. :)

If it was Korean book I would be 100% sure that last one is the founder and head of Chirch of Light :) and the main bad guy in the world. BTW, there are only 2 continents, right? PS. bat's are super cute!

In our world, there is, or should I say - there was fresh water pearl. Now those moluscs are almost extinct in Europe. But 200 years ago they were very widespread, almost in every river and stream, providing easy money for peasants. So pearl neclase was not very uncommon thing even for farmers wife. May be in most populous parts of Europe it disappeared earlier, don't know.
"I tried once," a slender woman from the Glass Eyed clan wearing a mask painted in intricate gold and silver patterns said. "It took a year just to transport the shells all the way here and when they arrived, half of them were broken. Within a year of wearing them, all of them were chipped badly enough that I was too embarrassed to take them out of my collection and wear them in public."

phew, so it was just that? Really, nothing to fear. For me at least, and many other people. :) I've never been a great hero... or any other 'great' to begin with. :) So this is what she taught Little Snake? No wonder her siblings survived.
