I don't watch sports, so I don't know if that's how it works IRL. And I don't like the inconsistent way that the anime/game handles it. Why shouldn't the champion have to participate too? Seems unfair if the champion just had to win a single match per year to keep their title. Also, in my version, the tournament is driven by media. If the champion has more matches, then it just means there are more matches that the public wants to watch.
