A platoon sized element for a single vessel isn't bad, or well, if you consider the fact that this is his first ship, giving him a shit ton of marines is not really an affective start to the story. An average US naval vessel doesn't even have a marine detachment nowadays. And those that do rarely have many, about 35 to 40.
