The more they know, the more easily they can adapt. With a game it is even more pronounced. Gear can be a factor, but anyone that plays at a high level will be able to perform way better than other people, even with bad gear. The extent can vary by gameplay, but it's still true. As an example, if you take the best CoD player in the world and stick them in another fps, it's not like they have to relearn everything .they just need to make a few adjustments. Also, knowing the most efficient way to far gear and what the best gear is in an RPG is most of the battle.
