That was in the beginning before kaiba made game rules in the tournament where slifer obelIsk anD ra was(forgot the name) Before that the rules were absurd, There was no tribute and effects where based on The animation( for example Yugi Used That turtle catapult thing as a cannon to destroy a castle).
...It still didn't explain the stupidity of throwing away cards like Decoy Dragon, Relinquished and only caring about attack points though.
