surprisingly it's actually a reasonable thought process. It was a recurring trend throughout history for ladies to drop a handkerchief in front of boys they like, this was so that if the boy was an upstanding person he would attempt to return the handkerchief, giving the ladies an excuse to talk to the boy they like.
