Zhang Fan was so filled with regrets that he really wanted to hit himself. Since the recruitment fair was over already, he could only depend on himself to find a job.
Zhang Fan had never even considered the possibility of continuing with postgraduate studies. He was too busy earning money for tuition and living expenses, so his grades in every subject were only barely passable.
As he was someone from a small village, Zhang Fan's skills in English were almost nonexistent. In fact, the only way he passed all his English tests was because his roommates were kind enough to help him cheat by secretly slipping him notes with all the answers during the tests.
Not only that, his younger sister was now in high school and about to take her college entrance examinations. As the oldest brother of the family, Zhang Fan needed to worry about his younger sister and gradually aging parents.
Zhang Fan rode around town on his shoddy bicycle that not even a thief would be interested in, trying to find a job. Obviously, a job at a Grade 3, Class A hospital would be impossible. Without a high-level provincial connection, it would be impossible for a fresh graduate like him.

There would also be no hope of obtaining a job at a public hospital. Although public hospitals would always have recruitment tests, it would likely be more difficult than winning the lottery for someone as bad at his studies as him to be accepted without any connections.
There weren't many options available to him. He could only try the smaller hospitals, community hospitals, private hospitals, and so on in the outskirts of the town.
Although L City was in the northwest of China, it was at least still the capital of a province. However, Zhang Fan had already gotten skinnier from so much bicycling exercise over the past few days, traveling to every nook and cranny in search of a hospital he could get a job at. Yet, he still hadn't managed to find one.
There was a standard required for becoming a doctor in China—you had to have obtained your medical license already. Fresh medical school graduates weren't allowed to take the medical license test until one year passed since their graduation. Of course, it would be illegal to work as an official doctor without a medical license.
Private hospitals would be interested in hiring intern doctors that could do work for a much lower salary, immediately bringing benefits to the hospital.
However, despite being a fresh medical school graduate, Zhang Fan appeared rather haggard and worn out, resembling a farmer trying to find work rather than a medical student. As expected, all the hospitals rejected Zhang Fan.
Zhang Fan couldn't come up with any other ideas. He kept bicycling everywhere he could in order to save on transportation costs. This made his appearance even more lacking as he was covered in dirt and sweat. Zhang Fan was unable to get accustomed to working society that also judged you by your appearance.
Every day, Zhang Fan would set out on his bike to go job hunting before it was even light outside. He only returned after it was dark. But after an entire week, he still hadn't received a single job offer.
Zhang Fan had no appetite. He was also unable to sleep well at night. Zhang Fan was never pudgy to begin with, but now he was skinny to the point where even his cheekbones showed.
Zhang Fan had five roommates, including two who had guaranteed postgraduate recommendations already. Those two had gone out to have fun after graduating. His other three roommates were either out with their girlfriends or visiting their homes. Zhang Fan was the only one present in his dorm room.
As he lay there on his bed, Zhang Fan felt like he was forming a grudge against his own school. "Damn it all, why'd you have to send out an advertisement? If it wasn't for your recruitment advertisement, I wouldn't have gone to medical school. Maybe I'd be rich already if I worked for several years by now."
Well, Zhang Fan felt so helpless that he could only complain to the heavens. Maybe he was misfortunate, but he was also fortunate in a way.
Colleges were on a recruitment spree. Not only that, the employment rate for fresh graduates was a golden number by which colleges were measured so that they could attract even more top talents. Nobody would want to attend a college with an abysmal employment rate, after all. That was why the colleges would try their best to help their graduates find jobs, no matter if the job was good or not. As long as the student was hired, that would count for the employment rate statistic.
China in the year 2008 had experienced great joys and great misfortunes, from the Sichuan Earthquake to the successful Beijing Olympics.
Something major also happened to S Province's medical school in this year. In response to China's rising standards, the only top college in S Province combined with S Province's medical school. Thus, a third-rate medical school suddenly became a top-level school.
This was the first year that the medical school was combined with the top college, so the school administrators worked extra hard on the medical school students' employment rate. They couldn't afford to have a former third-rate medical school's employment rate affect the top college's statistics. Thus, the college established a "fresh graduates working in the western part of China" program.
S Province was already in the northwest of China. However, China was a big country with provinces that were even farther west. Since this medical school was now associated with a top college, they had plenty of connections with border provinces' city hospitals at the very least. Thus, the medical school was able to help several hundred medical students find a job.
Of course, Zhang Fan was included amongst this group of several hundred students. The head teacher handed Zhang Fan a work contract and the school's reward money of 2000 yuan for working in western China to him.
Zhang Fan was rather stunned to learn all this. So, he was going to be sent all the way to China's border province?
Of course, the head teacher told him he could refuse this job offer if he wanted. But, this was basically his final chance. Otherwise, he wouldn't even be able to find a job as an intern doctor anywhere. Although western China was far away, the salary offered was pretty nice, and the school even gave him this reward money!
Being scared for his future prospects, Zhang Fan immediately signed the work contract. This was also the head teacher's first time to pay so much attention to Zhang Fan.
Zhang Fan could only helplessly accept his fate and go to the border. It couldn't be helped. His younger sister was an excellent student, and he didn't want to hold her back in her studies.
Although it was a job in a remote location, he would still at least become an intern doctor! He could be Doctor Zhang in the future!
Since Zhang Fan now had a job offer, he packed up his things and went back home.
His home wasn't far from the province capital. The village was simply a small town roughly one hundred kilometers away. The problem was that there was no highway leading to his hometown. There were only shoddy roads filled with small pits everywhere. The bus would take more than three hours to reach his home with all the stops.
After Zhang Fan started attending medical college, he rarely returned home as he was always busy studying and working. His parents also felt helpless about how Zhang Fan would have to take a job in a border province. Still, he wouldn't even have a job if he didn't go there... but if he went, it was so far away. The distance would be more than two thousand kilometers. He would basically be right next to all the -stan countries neighboring China.
Zhang Fan had already accepted his fate after signing the work contract. Regardless, it was still part of China. He had also heard that the border province had beautiful scenery, earning it the nickname of the "Border Jiangnan". Still, he felt that he was losing out by going there.
He had worked so hard to be able to attend school in a second-tier city. But after he graduated, he was sent all the way to a fifth-tier city in the border province. If he used an investment analogy, this was absolutely a failed investment.
In the few days before he had to leave, Zhang Fan went together with his father to pay respects to his ancestors' graves, helped out with housework for a few days, and secretly gave one thousand yuan to his younger sister.
Seeing all the tears in his sister's eyes, Zhang Fan squeezed her cheeks. "Hey, crybaby, what's there to cry about? I'm going there to work and earn money, it's not like I'm going to a battlefield. You need to properly concentrate on studying so that you can go to a first-rate college. Don't go to a third-rate school like I did. That will make it hard to find a good job."
"When will you come back to see me and mom and dad? It's so far away. I don't want you to go." His younger sister Zhang Jingshu tugged on her brother's shirt as she always did since young, relying on him.
"Hey, my silly sister, once I earn tons of money from work, I can just fly back anytime in just two hours. Don't cry, I'm leaving now. Listen to mom and dad, and don't neglect your studies."
"I'm not that dumb, Brother. I don't want to take your money. You'll need it more because you're going so far away."
"Just take what you're given. You're also growing up. Be more generous to yourself instead of being so stingy. You know how I am. Would I possibly lack for money? Okay, just take this thousand yuan. Otherwise, I'm going to be angry."
Choo~ Choo~ Zhang Fan then took a train to the westernmost part of China.
On a train where you couldn't feel the outside temperature, it would be impossible to tell by vision alone if it was winter or summer. The steppes had zero signs of greenery. Apart from snow in the winter and rain in the summer, there was only one color—earthen yellow. Zhang Fan's butt hurt from the hard seat ticket that he purchased. He was hardly interested in playing cards with the other people on the train. His mind was completely empty apart from his expectations and confusion about the future. Slowly and gradually, the train set off into the distance.
The train was only capable of bringing Zhang Fan to the western province's capital city. Kuake City, the city that Zhang Fan would be working in, didn't even have a train line. Kuake City was six hundred or so kilometers away from the province capital, so he would need to take a bus and sleep on it for an entire night before he finally arrived.


One day, Zhang Fan, a poor medical student, receives a medical system from the future. This turns him into a new shining star in the medical field. Along the way, he must face medical corruption, competition, and infighting from other doctors, and even find time for a love life as he strives for the top of the medical field!

"The prodigal son returns!" Marcella Bollinger greeted Ves with open arms as he arrived at her office.

"Does that make you my mom?"

"You wish!"

"Jokes aside, thank you for granted the Barracuda a berth in your private docking space."

"If there's one thing brokers don't lack, it's space. I'll be sure to keep your new toy secure."

The two sat down and began to discuss how the Bright Republic fared in his absence. The mech broker employed an entire department of analysts who kept track of the political and economic trends of their state. Marcella freely shared some of her insights.

"Everyone is smelling a war is brewing, but this time is different." She said grimly. She obviously predicted dark tidings. "We expect the Vesians to stir the pot a little, but the uprisings and terrorist attacks are much more severe than the Republic has anticipated. Every state in the star sector is suffering from some source of instability."

Ves scratched his head. Even the Vesians were dealing with their fair share of terrorists? "Could it be another star sector is having designs on our territory?"

"No, that doesn't make sense. The Komodo Star Sector ranks near the bottom in both exotic resource deposits and economic development. There's something bigger brewing behind the scenes. We won't know what's going on until they spring their plan on us."

"That doesn't sound reassuring. You're right, this isn't something we should stick our hands into. Better let the politicians from Rittersberg earn their pay for once."

"Your old friend Vincent is gaining prominence." Marcella added with a smirk. "He's one of the spokesmen for the so-called Bentheim Independence Movement. They want to secede Bentheim and its surrounding influence from the Republic, with violence if necessary."

"That's crazy! If Bentheim is our only port system. Without it, the Bright Republic is finished. Bentheim won't be better off either. Without the population and support from the rest of the Republic, the newly independent movement will only amount to a fourth-rate state at most."

"Don't underestimate their appeal. Bentheimers always consider themselves superior to the rest of the Republic. They resent the fact that they have to take their marching orders from Rittersberg. It doesn't help that much of Bentheim's wealth is used to subsidize the development of other planets and star systems."

The issue turned out to be quite the wedge between the people of Bentheim and the rest of the Republic. While Cloudy Curtain fell under Bentheim's sphere of influence, Ves had little sympathy for these delusions.

"So how's the mech industry faring these days?"

Marcella gave Ves an ambivalent smile. "The attacks are straining our industry's supply chains. Shipments get hijacked, factories get blown up or certain businesses get persuaded to cancel their long-standing contracts. It might only happen here and there, but each disruption has a ripple effect that affects all other companies down the supply chains."

"In other words, the saboteurs are trying to achieve maximum disruption with minimum effort. They shouldn't be part of a powerful group, then. Maybe they don't have a scary backing."

"Surprisingly, the chaos has only led to greater sales. The Mech Corps has expanded their orders by fifteen percent. Many mercenary leaders decided that they'd rather expand their arsenal immediately than to wait for the transition to the next generation of mechs."

"Looks like it's already high season for the industry. It's too bad I'm missing out."

"Are you sure you won't reconsider fabricating your current model? I already said I had a big order in store for you. It's easy money."

"The Marc Antony doesn't conform to my standards anymore. I can't allow any detractors to make an example out of it to convince the public that I'm not worthy to be an apprentice."

Marcella shrugged. "It's your call. Let me warn you that it won't do your credibility any good if you are halting your sales for an extended time."

A mech designer that was all talk and no show didn't go far in the business. Ves knew he risked squandering the goodwill he gained from becoming Master Olson's apprentice.

Ves asked for some tips on applying for a loan. Marcella briefly explained the procedure and what he should watch out for. She had a very daring suggestion when it came to collateral.

"You should put up your corvette as collateral if you're in need of a large amount of money. A genuine luxury corvette from the Friday Coalition is worth as much as a medium-sized company here. It's the best way to make use of a shiny but non-essential asset."

"No." Ves shook his head. "Absolutely not. I don't want to risk the ownership of the Barracuda. Besides, I'd be drowning in credits if I put up my ship for collateral. I can't grow my company that quickly without losing grip."

Marcella dropped the subject once Ves refused to budge on this matter. "Take a look at last month's national sales figures. Most of the skirmishes that have taken place are mainly hit-and-run attacks. Sales of light mechs have gone through the roof."

After discussing some minor issues, Ves ended his talk with his broker and left her office. He returned to the spaceport and met up with a waiting Dietrich and Lucky.

"Finally you're back!" The bored pilot spoke as he rose from his chair. "Are we done with this place?"

"I've finished all of my arrangements, yes. Your mech and my cargo are already being shipped back home. We've got a transport to catch."

They boarded the transport and took their seats without issue. The modest, utilitarian decor of the local spaceship contrasted sharply with the classier ships from the Coalition. This was the first time in months that he felt as if he finally felt at home. He didn't have to worry about class differences or watch his step in case of bumping into a powerful bigwig.

After two days of placid travel, their transport landed at Cloudy Curtain's spaceport. Their journey together finally came at an end.

Ves held Lucky close to his chest while making sure his floating luggage followed him out of the ship. He turned around and said goodbye to Dietrich. "It's been a wild ride. We've cut it close, but we made it through."

"I'd rather take a break from all the action." Dietrich smiled helplessly as he  No offense, but you're a dangerous man to be around."

After a friendly pat on the shoulder, the exuberant mech pilot returned to the embrace of Walter's Whalers. The entire spaceport was a hive of activity as the gang finished their preparations for their upcoming scavenging expedition.

Ves had no further involvement in their proceedings. In exchange for forsaking all of his claims on the abandoned base, he'd receive the full sale value of the blackmail material they recovered from a stash.

"Let's go home, Lucky."

When the aircar arrived in front of his workshop, Ves sighed in relief. Nothing happened to his workshop. A lone security bot vigilantly patrolled the perimeter and the electric fencing sparkled ominously. Household bots neatly trimmed the grass and swept up any dust in their way.

A familiar face waited by the entrance. Carlos Shaw resolutely quit his job arranged by his father's connections. His friend severed his only opportunity to climb the ladder of a major mech manufacturer.

"Hey Ves. Look at you. Last time we met, you were just a fellow buddy. Now you've become an unreachable existence. You even look handsomer!"

Ves did change a lot since he left the Bright Republic. His mentality matured after winning the Leemar Open Competition and surviving two different pirate attacks. His appearance grew smoother due to the changes brought by the gene boost.

Finally, he set aside most of his normal clothes and started donning his gifted antigrav clothes all the time. The malleable high-tech clothes came pre-programmed with an entire library of stylish outfits. Even a fashion illiterate boor like Ves could not go wrong once he took advantage of this function.

"Let's step inside before we discuss your employment." Ves calmly spoke and led his friend past the security measures and into his shabby workshop.

Lucky escaped from his grasp and ran to his private little bed. The cat had grown less active over the past few days. Ves suspected his pet was about to undergo a fundamental transformation.

Once Ves finished arranging his luggage, he returned to the living room and stared at his friend. Carlos sat at the dining table with a data pad in front. The pad showed his employment contract.

"My broker arranged this cookie cutter employment contract. I've modified a couple of terms in order to suit my purposes better. You will work for my company in a full-time capacity as a mech fabricator. I'm not hiring you to be my designer, but you are free to use my licenses and facilities to play around if you finished your daily tasks. Your will receive a modest pay of ten-thousand credits a month before taxes. Do you have any questions?"

Carlos scrunched his face. "Yeah, it says here you will own all the rights for any commercial designs I register at the MTA. Isn't that a little overboard?"

"I don't think this is an unreasonable demand." Ves retorted with a firm voice. "Mech designers usually don't allow their subordinates to borrow their facilities in the first place. If you are taking advantage of my hard-earned equipment and licenses, then your designs should also belong to me. Don't worry, the contract states that you'll receive appropriate credit as well as a cut from any sales."

It might not be entirely fair to Carlos, but Ves wanted to make it clear who was in charge. He knew that Carlos wanted to work under Ves in order to develop his own mech designer career. Ves didn't want to invest in Carlos without getting anything in return. If Carlos thought he was going to be a selfless chump, then he was sorely mistaken.

"Okay, I can accept that." Carlos said and dropped his objection. "The next page states that I have to sign an MTA-administered disclosure agreement. You know the penalties for breaking a contract under the purview of the MTA, right? In the worst case, I can even get executed!"

"I trust you, but I've made quite a few enemies." Ves crossed his arms. "Who knows if someone offers you a couple of billion credits to pass on some information?"

"I would never do that!"

"Even if you are inhuman enough to resist becoming an instant billionaire, perhaps you'll receive threats. No one is infallible, Carlos. I don't want to consider the option of you betraying me. I can be assured you won't do anything stupid if I bring in the MTA. It will also send a signal to my enemies that there's no use trying to use their means on you."

Since it was a matter of life and death, Ves gave Carlos time to weigh the issue. If his friend insisted on change, then he would withdraw the employment contract. He had a lot of secrets in his closet. While Ves didn't intend to inform his employee about the System or the X-Factor, it never hurt to prepare beforehand.

"Okay. I don't know what you're hiding, but if you think it's serious enough to bring in the MTA, then so be it. I'll sign your darned NDA."

After going past these hurdles, Carlos brought up a range of minor issues. Ves patiently explained his thoughts even showed a little flexibility by changing some minor clauses. He hardly cared about when Carlos would claim his vacation days, or how much of a bonus he earned if he worked overtime.

"If that's all, then let's visit the local branch of the MTA to finalize the contract and sign the NDA. You'll start your work tomorrow. I'll arrange a spare design terminal and some other amenities in order to accommodate your presence."

After a firm handshake, Carlos left the workshop and went back to his new home. In preparation for his new job, he already rented a nearby home in the nearby suburbs of Freslin.

Ves returned to his workshop. He had to arrange the storage of his salvaged Dortmund parts. He considered taking another loan in order to fund the purchase of an alloy compressor. He also wanted to earn some very precious DP by designing a couple of virtual mechs.

In short, he was back in business.

Humanity has conquered half the galaxy and the Age of Mechs reigns supreme!

Ves Larkinson lacked the genetic aptitude to become a famed mech pilot. Fighting against his fate, he studied mech design in order to express his love for mechs as a builder instead of a soldier.

When Ves graduated from college, he returned to a new but empty boutique. Left with a small, newly founded mech workshop that his father painstakingly built with a mountain of debt, Ves somehow needs to make ends meet with the bank breathing down his neck.

In the midst of his despair, he found salvation from another legacy his father had left.

The president looked at the manager and said, "Manager Kim, can we have some tea?"
The manager laid out all the papers that Gun-Ho brought in today in front of the president before standing up.
"I will bring some tea."
After the manager left for preparing tea, only Gun-Ho and the president were left in the office.
"Where is your home?"
"I am currently staying in Dujeong Town, Cheonan City. I am planning to move to Dunpo Town soon."
"What about your parents?"
"They are in Incheon."
"Hmm…"
The manager brought three cups of green tea. The president spoke after having one sip of green tea. He didn't even bother looking through the Gun-Ho's application papers.
"You have probably noticed already that our company is not big enough to require two persons in an accounting team. We decided to hire one more person to assist Manager Kim because she is expecting a baby soon. The pay is not high, but it will gradually increase as you work hard."
"I understand."
Gun-Ho responded by bending himself to show his respect.
"Oh, Manager Kim! How much do we pay to the new employee in the quality assurance team downstairs?"
"It is 1,800,000 won."
"Our starting salary is 1,800,000 won. I had looked through your application when we had the interview, and I believe you didn't have a lot of work experience, Mr. Goo…"
The president couldn't remember Gun-Ho's name; he picked up Gun-Ho's resume from his desk. He found Gun-Ho's name on top of the resume and said, "We didn't actually select you, Mr. Gun-Ho Goo. The person we initially hired had ten years of work experience in a fodder company, but she decided to stay with her current employer. That's how we hired you. Since you are male and have work experience in a factory, we thought you could work in other teams later on such as the general affair, logistics, or sales if necessary."
"I see. I appreciate it."
"Our company has a very friendly work environment. Many of our workers are long-term employees. Manager Kim also has been working with us for fifteen years probably; isn't it?"
The president looked at Manager Kim's face.
"Yes, that's right."
"Manager Kim will explain you about your work here. If you work hard, you can be promoted to manager and general manager. You do look like a hard working person."
The president smiled at Gun-Ho. Gun-Ho felt so grateful and he bowed deeply to the president.
 
Manager Kim introduced the employees on the second floor to Gun-Ho.
"This is Seon-Hong Hwang, our general affairs manager."
The general affairs manager looked three to four years older than Gun-Ho.
"I am Gun-Ho Goo; I will be working in the accounting team. I look forward to working with you."
"I am the one who's look forward to working with you. You will be working in the accounting team that handles money."
The general affairs manager seemed to be a sarcastic person. Gun-Ho was introduced to the logistics team leader and the sales manager as well. The logistics team leader and sales manager were both in their 50s. They were so busy at the time that they didn't pay attention to Gun-Ho.
"The logistics team has two more workers, and there is a sales assistant manager as well; they seem to be working away from the office at the moment, so you can meet them later."
When Manager Kim came back to her desk with Gun-Ho, the general affairs manager came to her.
"You need to give me his papers."
Manager Kim handed the papers to him. The general affairs manager said to Gun-Ho,
"I will have to give you the employment contract, so stop by my desk later."
"Okay, I will do that."
 
Manager Kim showed Gun-Ho's desk which was next to hers.
"No one is using that desk. You can work there. The computer is not new, but it still works well. I will make a link to the accounting program that I am using so you can use it too."
"What accounting program does this company use? Is it Douzone?"
"Yes, we are using Douzone."
Douzone is an accounting software that was developed by Douzone company. Gun-Ho would finally start working with an accounting software.
"As the president told you, I will be on maternity leave after three months from now. As such, you should familiarize yourself with the work during the next three months."
"I will do my best. I'd love to learn from you and to have you as my mentor and big sister."
"I saw your resume earlier. I am actually ten years older than you. Haha."
If so, she was already 42 years old. Being pregnant at this age made it evident that she had married late.
"Is that so? You have extensive work experiences and you are an expert in this field. Me... I have a lot to learn. In my previous company, they didn't even use any accounting software."
"You know how to do journalizing, right? While you are journalizing, you just need to record them. I will do the tax return when I come back, you just need to record deposits and withdrawals, and fill in the expense report accordingly."
Gun-Ho felt really anxious. He felt like he would get lost even in journalizing. Manager Kim seemed to be concerned a bit about Gun-Ho as well.
 
"Are you done here?"

The general affairs manager didn't seem comfortable with what Manager Kim said. He went back to his desk while murmuring.
Manager Kim warned Gun-Ho quietly in a low tone, "The general affairs manager has a ferocious temper. You want to be careful with him. He graduated at Dankook University here in Cheonan. He joined our company through some high-ranking official."
"Oh, really?"
Manager Kim talked more about a few tasks Gun-Ho had to perform. Gun-Ho diligently wrote it down, but he didn't fully understand what she said.
 
Gun-Ho went to the general affairs manager.
"This is the employment contract. Let's start by signing on this paper."
Gun-Ho had seen the employment contract before when he worked in a production line in a factory. Gun-Ho signed on the contract without any problem. The general affairs manager continued talking while looking through Gun-Ho's resume.
"You graduated from a cyber college. Is that college accredited?"
"Yes. As far as I know, it is an accredited college."
"You went to a college in the countryside as well. You need to bring the enrollment certificate for that college. Also, please bring the level-2 computerized accounting certificate. We need to include all of those papers in your file."
"I, I will do that."
"Since you will be working in one of the influential teams, accounting team, I hope you will be easy with our general affairs team."
The general manager extended his hand for a handshake while implying something. Gun-Ho laughed while shaking hands.
"I believe all teams have equal power; there is no such thing as a more influential team."
"That's not true. Our team handles the Four Major Public Insurance, but the withholding tax is handled by the accounting team."
"Is it? Haha. I am not so sure yet."
"Let's go to the work site and meet with people. If you don't meet with them now, they will talk behind your back when they see you in the cafeteria."
Gun-Ho followed the general affairs manager to the work site. He stopped by the quality assurance team, production team, and maintenance team, and introduced Gun-Ho to the team leaders. They all welcomed Gun-Ho with broad smiles, maybe because it was their first time meeting him. The team leader of the production team talked to the general affairs manager.

This is the story of a poor young man whose poverty even shreds apart their family willing to climb his way through society and into the top. A very realistic novel that moves away from fantasy and sci-fi and focuses solely on the issues of society and life.

Feng Xinying couldn't think of a better situation. Butler Lu Boyun was shocked. How could his master take his position? What about him? Master even though you have lost your memory, why are you taking my position? Why are cutting my tree? Where would I go? He was confused, shocked and at a loss of words. Everyone in the room looked from Xie Yuansheng to Lu Boyun. Xie Yuansheng looked hopeful while Lu Boyun looked shattered. 
Feng Xinying turned her face to look at Keira as she couldn't help her face splitting grin. Keira was finding it hard to suppress her laughter and excitement. Xie Shengjun coughed hard. 
Xie Yuansheng felt awkward and said, "I can be of immense help to you." He was putting his best foot forward. He didn't want to leave a single chance to convince Feng Xinying that she should actually employ him and can even do away with Lu Boyun. 
Feng Xinying took a deep breath and said, "So you don't want to go to the rehabilitation center that the doctor had suggested for you?" She had to trap Xie Yuansheng in a way that he wouldn't feel forced. She wanted him to willingly come to her because forcing was not an option here. Since morning she been wondering what to do and as if the Gods had heard her, the opportunity came right in her lap. 
"No, I would rather be of service to you," he replied very eagerly. He had to pay his debts. 
Feng Xinying again took a deep breath and replied, "Actually I was thinking that today we would hand you over to the doctor and be free from your responsibility…" 
Xie Shengjun gritted his teeth. Why is Feng Xinying doing so much drama? He interjected, "Yes, you can always join and in fact if Feng Xinying doesn't want, I have a position of Chef vacant at my place!" He was determined to get Xie Yuansheng in a safe place and that too as soon as possible.
Keira shook her head at her husband. "You moron!" she shouted at him. "We already have two Chefs at home." 
"Then where will he go?" lashed Xie Shengjun back at Keira. This time Keira got scared and became quiet immediately. She knew that even though she wanted things to work in Feng Xinying's favor, she had crossed her line between brotherly love. 
Feng Xinying had to calm the situation immediately because she was afraid that Xie Yuansheng would start suspecting. She looked at him and said, "Well, if you insist Shengu, I can allow you to work under Lu Boyun. I cannot remove Lu Boyun because he had been with us from a long time, but you can definitely work under him." 
Xie Yuansheng sprang up from his place and said, "Thank you so much Feng Xinying." He went near her and held her hand in his. "I will not give you a single opportunity of complain." 
Feng Xinying laughed. "Okay. It's done then. You can start working as soon as you want to but there is an employment contract you have to sign." 
Xie Yuansheng's face fell. "Employment contract? What is that…?"
Feng Xinying couldn't help smiling as she remembered the contract he had made her sign when he wanted to marry her. He must have loved her so much, even at that time. "Don't worry. It's a simple one. After all you said that you want to repay back my kindness and I have to ensure that you do repay." 
"Oh, okay! I will sign it," he replied as he left his hand and looked very happy. 
Xie Shengjun narrowed his eyes at Feng Xinying. Although he became quiet, he wanted to know about the contract now. 
"The doctor has said that we can leave the hospital by tomorrow after a few tests on you. So after we go back home, you can start your job," said Feng Xinying. 
"Done!" replied Xie Yuansheng. He couldn't believe that his plan would become successful so soon. Now all he had to do was remove Lu Boyun from his place and become the head Chef. That way he would never have to leave Feng Xinying's job. 
Feng Xinying nodded and looked at Lu Boyun who was now looking relieved but at the back of his mind he was wondering how would he go about ordering the Young Master. He left the room in a confused state. Feng Xinying went after him and Xie Shengjun followed her. 
Lu Boyun looked perplexed. As soon as they were out of Xie Yuansheng's earshot, Feng Xinying said, "Lu Boyun, I want you to go and prepare a room for Xie Yuansheng as soon as you reach the mansion. Give him the room that belonged to Xie Weihui. Remove all other Chefs from the house. Give them a month's holiday. Tell all the servants and guards that the Young Master is coming home and he is not too well. Tell them not to speak much to him but ask all the guards to not let him out of sight at any point of time if he walks out in the gardens. He has to be monitored at all times."
"Okay Young Miss. But should I tell them that he is having amnesia?" asked Lu Boyun. 
"No! You must never do that," said Feng Xinying immediately. "No one can know that he has amnesia or else they would start taking his advantage." She trusted no one. 
"Okay," replied Lu Boyun and left. 
Xie Shengjun was baffled. "Feng Xinying, what do have in mind? His gestures would be such that they would all know soon that something is wrong with him. Then they will question him and won't it get worse?" 
"Well you have to see the contract I am going to write for him," said Feng Xinying with a glint of happiness and naughtiness in her eyes. 
"I am getting scared of you Xinying," said Xie Shengjun with a frown. 
Feng Xinying chuckled. "You should totally be present there when the contract is written."

The next day Michael prepared to greet Cindy. Even though Cindy was hired as a lawyer; her position would probably be closer to a legal adviser. In the early stages of business, many companies would make typical mistakes like signing unfavorable contracts. They would face a wave of lawsuits from competitors and consumers. Without the help of a competent legal adviser, these newly created companies would get shut down. 

Until now it was alright to not have a legal adviser because the business had not yet begun operations. However, next week the game will be released and the traders will start trading within two weeks. So it was imperative that he get legal protection. Michael was more concerned about the traders; he had some ideas on how to enforce security measures to prevent them from betraying him. However, he could really use advice from a professional.

Cindy pulled up at the front gate and was stopped by the security. Michael remembered that he needed to give her clearance and immediately called the security to let her in. Cindy drove a beaten down Ford Taurus. Honestly, Michael was taken back by Cindy's financial status. She was one of the top graduates from the best law school in the state. Cindy should be enjoying the fruits of her hard work in school; however, due to unfortunate circumstances, she was stuck in her current predicament. 

Cindy's situation was a reminder to Michael that hard work did not guarantee success. There were giants in the world who could crush ordinary people and throw them back into the bottom of the pyramid. This insight only strengthened Michael's desire to be successful. He was around to save Cindy but who could save him from being crushed? He needed to keep working harder so that he can stand up for himself against the elites in society. 

Michael greeted Cindy and gave her a tour of the whole office. He explained the two companies while introducing her to his business. After the tour, Michael had a meeting with Cindy. 

" So what do you think?' He asked. 

" Well, the security is amazing. I thought this was a secret military base at first. " Cindy pointed out. She was taken back by the attention to detail Michael had for security. She did not really understand why it was necessary; initially, she thought the company was doing something illegal, however, she abandoned that suspicion when Michael gave her the full tour. It certainly looked like a normal company on the inside.

" So do you have anything specific for me to do?" She was not really sure what to do at the company. Normally only large corporations hired in-house lawyers. And they usually had enough lawyers to form a team because they needed it. However, Michael's company was in its infancy so there really was not much need for a lawyer yet.  

" Well, first I hope you can go through our employee handbooks and other employment documentation to make sure we did not leave any loopholes. After that, I need help drafting up contracts for the traders that I will train for the investment company. I don't want to waste time and money to train them, only to have them quit after they learned everything." Michael explained. 

Cindy brainstormed for a while. " Well, you can have a normal employment contract and add a non-competing clause. This way your employees will not be able to work for a competitor or start their own investment firm. What do you think about that?" 

Michael liked Cindy's idea. The non-competing clause sounded like the perfect thing to prevent traders from using him. However, he knew that there is always a caveat to legal contracts. For example, the traders could use personal accounts to trade from home. They could set up anonymous accounts to transfer money to in order to avoid trouble. Or they could even move to a country where the contract would not be recognized. 

Ultimately, traders can make money from anywhere in the world as long as they had internet access. This is why he wanted to add an employment contract too. He figured the first year could be considered as training and did not expect much profits from the traders. However, the years after that should be enough for him to recover his investment. 

" Let's do a 10-year contract. They can choose to leave anytime after five years but they cannot compete for the rest of the time. If they work for the full 10 years, then they can leave and do anything. That sounds like a fair deal. " Michael explained, 10 years should be enough for him to get his money's worth. Not to mention the traders will get a commission for successful trades. He figured that the talented traders would be millionaires after the first couple of years. 

Cindy and Michael continued to iron out the details. She promised to have a draft by the end of the week for him to look over. 

Michael was satisfied with Cindy's performance. Her work ethic was perhaps the most remarkable quality she had. He wanted to talk to Kevin and arrange for her to have a budget. He knew that it was best to get Cindy an assistant as part of her department. It would be stupid to have such an expensive employee waste time on clerical tasks that could be handled by a secretary. Furthermore, he needed to lay a foundation for a full-fledged legal team. 

As Cindy walked out of Michael's office, she ran into Jennifer.

" Oh excuse me" Jennifer did not recognize the new face in Michael's office. 

Jennifer walked into Michael's office while still watching Cindy who was walking out. "Michael, who is that?" 

" She is our new lawyer. Cindy joined our team and will be helping us with our legal issues." Michael explained. Jennifer was not here when he gave Cindy the office tour. 

" Oh, I already knew excellent lawyers that we could have hired. There was no need to hire a stranger." Jennifer explained. She was keeping in touch with the prominent lawyers in the business community and planned to draw one of them into Empyreal holdings. 

" Well I am confident in Cindy's talents so we will be good for the near future. Perhaps we can talk with your contacts once we expand and need more lawyers." Michael replied. He knew that Jennifer had a tendency to micromanage everything. Honestly, that is why he hired her; he did not plan on spending the rest of his days running a business. However, it was not the time to hand the controls to Jennifer yet. 

Michael needed to be there in the early stages to ensure that the business will be built according to his vision. Furthermore, he needed to ensure the loyalty of the founding employees so that he did not just own the company on paper. He wanted all the employees to know that he was the real boss. 

Jennifer did not show any dissatisfaction with his answer and continued to give him a progress report while discussing some business decisions. Michael dived back into work.

The week went by quickly. The gaming team finished testing the game and setting up the servers. Capos was ready to make its debut. Michael could not wait to see the results of his hard work.

Michael was just an ordinary boy living in modern-day America. He grew up in an orphanage with a bleak future. One day he acquired a mysterious package only to inherit a system. Join Michael as he changes his fate and conquers his destiny; armed with a mysterious system that tries to convince him to take over the world.

Theo probably figured it out after all? I told myself and shook my head.
"Miss Lindsey?"
Phoebe approached the lounge and called me. I quickly sat up and strode toward her.
"Mrs. Lawrence is waiting for you now." 
She said to me, and then her attention shifted toward Theo.
"Mr. Shang, Chairman Lee will speak to you. Please come and follow me."
I glanced at Theo, and he nodded at me. I nod back before we go separate directions. Arriving at the VP office, I knock on the door. 
"Come in."
I pushed through the door and greeted sister, Michelle. She was seated on a single couch reviewing a document in which she places it down the moment I entered her office.
"Nikki, please sit down."
She offers the sofa across to her. Quietly, I sat down and prepared myself. Heaving a deep sighed, I bowed down.
"Sister Michelle, I'm so sorry for causing trouble during your birthday party," I said with an inaudible voice.
"What are you saying? You didn't start it. Don't worry, I don't mind, really."
I lifted my head, confused, I peered at her. Sister Michelle tore a soft smile, then continued. 
"Brianna's parents left not long after that incident, and they apologize before they leave at the party."
It made me astounded that something happens when I left to breathe some air. "I see. But I did not mean to create that kind of controversy."
"I know. I've known you for too long already."
Ah, yes. Sister Michelle knows my story. I smiled at her, feeling relaxed a bit.
"Sister Michelle, one thing why I was here." I take out my resignation letter from my bag and place it on the table. 
"Okay, Nikki, and here's the recommendation certificate." 
She picks up a folder and hands it to me. 
"Although I directly recommend you. Still, you have to submit application requirements such as resume, training certificates, recommendation."
Upon receiving it, I saddened my gaze. "Um. Sister Michelle, about that… I was thinking of declining the offer."
"Why?"
It seems sister Michelle did not expect this instead but assumes the opposite reaction from me. I keep my silence as I cannot bring myself to explain it to her. It looks like she read what I am thinking, so she went on.
"Do you know it was my loss to let you go? However, the job Blaire offered has no one suited but you are. If you reject the offer because of that incident? Then know this, it has nothing to do with the company. I assure you, Blaire is a receptive person, and she doesn't listen to gossip and give a quick judgment in a one-sided story."
"I highly recommend you, because what Blaire needed is not an employee, but a trusted family."
Hearing this made me way more speechless. More like overwhelms and I guess it was also a compliment. "Sister Michelle…"
"You are one of my utmost trusted employees. I was planning to make you a general manager at your branch… but you are the suited one to what Blaire is looking for. Aside from the benefits, you will get. One thing is, since the Williams Medical Research Facility prepares your mother's medicine for her treatment, maybe you can have it for free once you were under their Insurance Company. Signing a contract at the Crow Corporation employment is a Universal privilege, Nikki." 
Sister Michelle convinced me further, and I was stunned.
"For free?" Everything I heard astounded me. Why did I never receive this kind of offer when I was desperate which ended me sleeping with a stranger?
And speaking of that man. He is now paying mama's treatment after I become his woman. Could it be possible he was a Williams? Or a Crow?
No, no. Why am I thinking of these facts? They are the most powerful families, probably in the world. And what I know: the Williams and Crow families; everyone married or yet too young to do those stuff with me. Unless be one of their closest friends or a business partner?
Perhaps, after I work in the hotel, a possibility we will cross to and I could identify something about him. Shot. My mind is all over the place again while I'm having an important talk with sister Michelle.
And truly the benefits I will get from Crow Corporation are on top of the world and therefore so hard to resist.
"So what do you think, Nikki?"
"I, um… the offer is truly enticing."
"Don't worry. Blaire's employment has strict rules. When you are an employee under them, you have to be careful not to throw gossip to someone openly. Especially with the guests. If anything that was within their employment program, they were settling it confidentially. The HR would deal with it secretly. They won't tolerate slack employees or raising a terrible reputation against each other inside work. And most of all? They will hear both sides. So if you experience that your coworkers are harassing you and insulting you? You can file a report, and they will quickly investigate it to hear both sides. Blaire does not like issues, especially childish play to happen inside her hotel."
Hmm, as expected to someone like Blaire Williams Ivanov. My boss, soon. Including sister Michelle, she is also a great boss.
I think one reason she will let me go is for me to have an opportunity of granting promising benefits more than her company could offer.

Stuttering, she cannot finish her sentence as she's holding her breaths. 

He leans closer to listen to her muffled voice, in which his hot breaths tickle her cheek, causes her to miss his kisses.

The Mercenary Guild knew that the effects wouldn't be very remarkable, as the team leaders of the Mercenary Guild were basically all boors. They wouldn't be able to comprehend this diversified employment system. 
It would probably take several years before a few up-and-coming mercenary teams could get used to this system. Perhaps the Mercenary Guild would need to spend a lot of effort to be able to nurture this sort of diversified mercenary team.
After all, not every mercenary team was created by a neutral Lord.
Of course, the Mercenary Guild would provide the City of Dawn with other benefits. For example, if the Dawn Mercenary Team wanted to establish a base in the territory of other forces, they would be supported by the Mercenary Guild. 
The Dawn Mercenary Team would have priority in getting assigned several high-tier missions.
The most important thing was that the Mercenary Guild would take the initiative to search for some defense-type missions, and it would put the Dawn Mercenary Team in charge.       The presenter cuts in, "So you paid them off and jumped ship?" Tolu answered, "In a way yes I paid them off, though not directly, I left the company at the end of the month when they were about to pay our salary, so in my disengagement letter I told them to keep my salary as pay off for my sin as stipulated in their staff's code of conduct"
      The presenter said, "Somehow I did not like that you did that to that company" Tolu answered, I also do not like it, but Richie came to our house in the evening of the day he gave the interview letter to me and I tried to tell him I could not do what he was asking me to do because the management of the company loved me"
      "What was his answer?" The presenter asked and Tolu replied, "Richie told me not to be a fool that the company don't like anybody, that the moment the going is good and they are benefiting from our talents they will make us feel we are kings, but let any small error occur, they will sack you like you were nothing to the company without notice. All these corporations are full of double standards, when they want to fire a staff they do it without notice, but when a staff wants to leave them they ask the staff to give them notice of a month or two, is that fair?"
       With his lecture I was encourage to do what my conscience did not agreed with me to do. Although later when the management discovered that I was with their rival, I saw that they were not shocked because it was a normal game between the two, I told you before that Richie  himself was actually snatched from the other camp and given sumptuous salary and post."
       The presenter said, "If that is the case, then I can't blame you much, it is a tit for tat game, but what now happened after you switched office?"
       "What do you expect?" Tolu remarked, Richie came to our house and said straight to me, now you have no more excuse, be mine and I did.
       The presenter called it a wrap when they got to this stage and called for peoples' vote that will bring Tolu back the following night.
