In the year 2019 Earth experienced a world-wide event called "the breach" where endless waves of monsters invaded the planet through portals. Humans fought a war for two straight years without gaining the upper hand against the powerful monster hoards. It wasn't until world leaders came together and founded the Interdimensional Ranger Association (IRA) that things began to change in humanity's favor. The IRA trained people to become rangers capable of taming monsters and using them to fight. With the help of rangers around the globe the monster hoards were pushed back and scientists created the Nexus to prevent more portals from opening up on Earth.

Ten years later and now monsters are a central aspect of human society. Many children wish to grow up and become rangers in order to train monsters and explore the frontier. Our protagonist, Impiro Fushima, is no different. Now at the age of 18 he's able to become a Ranger once he graduates from high school. However, one thing sticks out about Impiro: after taming his first monster he receives a special status window that allows him to view detailed information about monsters! With this he could become the strongest ranger ever!

Ugh… I really need to improve my strength if freaks like those are running around. I doubt they could easily end me, but the two I've assimilated so far are nothing compared to the humans that just tried to kill me. How the hell did they become so powerful? Unless there's something seriously wrong with the archives, humans were not like that when I was created. But if I can hunt one of them down… The only troublesome part will be not dying in the process.
Of course, humans aren't the only lifeforms I can assimilate… I'm sure there's some beast around here capable of threatening them whilst simultaneously lacking the ability to bury me in lightbeams of destruction. The last detail being particularly high on my list.
As nerve function to my legs is restored, there's a sharp, biting pain on my left calf, and what parts of my body that can jerk to see the interloper. Standing over my leg in a domineering fashion, ruthlessly feasting on my broken flesh and blood like a beast from the depths of hell, is… A chicken. Granted, it's a rainbow-colored chicken with a dragon tail, but still… A mutant chicken?! Eating an ancient biological superweapon?!?! Haahhh… I think I'm beginning to understand humor; at least, the irony bit.
As the chicken-thing sees my head turning to face it, it startles and jumps back before looking at me curiously. As in, the "What are you, and how are you not dead?" type of curiosity. 
"Ku-kuuuu~?"
It vocalizes as it points its beak at my leg, makes eye contact, and points again.
"Are you… trying to ask if you can eat me?!?!"
"Kuu~!!"
Great, at least this flesh-hungry fowl seems to understand common language. I swear, nothing in this world is going surprise me anymore. At least this monster is more considerate than the humans I've met so far, but...
"No!! Who even answers yes to that?!?!"
The creature's neck droops at that, letting out a dejected "kukuku~kweh…" as it waddles away. What's this… What's this feeling in my chest? Hearing that dejected warbling hurt.

"Wait… Err… It's just biomass I need, not this body in particular… If you can kill a beast around here and bring me the corpse, I'll leave part of this body to eat."

The chicken-thing seems confused for a moment, but it enthusiastically nods before heading out into the nearby forest. The cliff casts a long shadow over the already dark forest, so I'm glad I'm not the one going out at nightfall.

 A couple hours later, my newfound dragon-chicken companion returns, dragging a wolf-beast about ten times its size. It proudly struts around a bit before dumping the fully-dead wolf atop my half-dead body. Really, this bird needs to get some bedside manner…
 I begin the assimilating the wolf like before, taking care to integrate with the beast's entire body and store any extra biomass for the future. Curiously, this beast has something resembling my own Cores, albeit primitive in comparison. It seems to absorb and compress the ambient radiation, allowing it to be released and converted to bursts of strength or speed. The abilities that mage-woman displayed should follow the same principles, but I can't even begin to imagine just how more advanced their Cores are.
 'Cores, begin regeneration of my new physique, and apply the Nightvision mutation in the process;

 As I integrate with the wolf, the dragon-chicken gingerly pokes around the remains of my old body… wait, no, it's only poking at the parts I enhanced when I was trying to escape. Did this thing develop a taste for Chimera?
 … This could be problematic. I should probably assimilate it like the wolf and be done with it, but that girl's remnant personality would never forgive me. Yes. That's definitely the reason. Chimeras have no need of cute animals.
 Really, human emotions are so troublesome.
 A couple minutes pass, and I've finally integrated with the wolf's body. This thing is strong! Authors Note:
If you asked me what genre this story predominantly is, I'd answer “adventurer’s romantic-comedy” without another thought. There are tense, dark moments to be sure, and terrible things to happen, but the silly and shenanigans are never far behind. I’m hoping to write a book that keeps you glued to it, but not so much that you forget to laugh.

The start of the new week marked the beginning of the Harvest Festival. Travellers were coming in from different places and taking up all the rooms in the inns. Campsites were set up in the outskirts of the town to accommodate the growing number of travellers. 

Vy had just started up her business in the market and spread the message by word of mouth. Within a day or so, she received multiple requests for letters and invitations to be written for various events. The business was lucrative and Vy's friendly personality was a win with the customers. 

On short notice, Vy also managed to find a runner who would help her to receive and deliver the work she had from Rodrick. The runner was a young boy named Lycster, a young orphan boy living on the streets. When Gonzo heard that Vy was looking for someone to help her, he knew immediately that Lycster would be up for the job. The young boy, no older than ten, was scrawny but smart.

"I will not disappoint you, miss," Lycster said with great enthusiasm, when Vy decided to hire him. 

"I can't pay you much in the beginning, but I can offer you a place to sleep and three meals a day." 

When she told him that, his face brightened up with glee. "I will work hard for you Miss! I will not let you down!"

With his ability to move through crowds nearly unseen and being able to squeeze in tight spots, Lycster was the perfect person for the job. When Vy did not have any errands for him to run, he would sit next to her quietly and watch her work. She could tell that Lycster was interested in learning how to read and write, and that was something worth nurturing. 

The festivities brightened every street in the market with decorations, lights and street performances. After a day of hard work, Vy would head to the town square to view the parade of performers and view the lit-up floats that paraded around the town. It was a beautiful sight of colours and lights. 
When the lights started to dim and the crowds began to disperse, Vy returned to her stall and slept for the night. She bought Lycster another sleeping cot and set it up next to hers. Once everyone was comfortable, Vy opened up the wooden chest and retrieved the book she had bought from Antique store. 

There was something about the book that intrigued her. As she flipped through the book, the information was recorded in her mind. Dotty processed the information and gave Vy an explanation on the contents in the book.

Vy smiled, now there was something new for her to try out. As she went through the details in the book, she realised that there were multiple steps for her to follow before she would be able to attain a full transformation. In order to master these abilities, she must first find out what sort of transformation she can do. 

-Dotty, what do I need to figure out what sort of transformation I am able to do?-

<According to the book, every human can transform into one of each type of animal that's on land, sea and sky. But not everyone would be able to transform into a mythical creature.>

<To start, I recommend beginning with a land animal>

Vy heeded Dotty's advice and followed the instructions in the book. She sat upright, closed her eyes and visualised an open plain. With simple rhythmic breathing techniques and concentration, Vy pictured a vast open field of golden wheat; ready to be harvested. 

As her hand touched the stalks of wheat billowing in the wind, feeling the rays of sunlight on her skin. Vy was in the field of wheat. She looked around her in awe of its beauty and heard a howl carried by the wind. 

Vy turned to look in the direction of the howl, she noticed a wolf in the distance. The wolf had a coat of yellow grey fur. Its eyes were amber gold. Vy instinctively reached out for the wolf and it came to her immediately. As soon as her hand touched its fur coat, everything disappeared. It was as if she had gotten a new skin, Vy realised she was now one with the wolf. 

When she opened her eyes, she realised she was back in her stall, seated cross-legged on her sleeping cot. Vy looked at her hands and saw nothing different. But her senses were enhanced. She could fine-tune them as and when she needed them.

Vy decided to turn in for the night and give her abilities a test the next day. 

She woke up bright and early and made her way swiftly out of town. She walked further into the forest and made sure there was no one else around before picturing herself as the wolf once more.

When she opened her eyes once more, she realised that she was on all fours. With her heightened senses, she was able to hear the trickling water of the river just a short distance away. Vy ran towards it and looked into the river, she was a wolf. 

Without the slightest hesitation, filled with excitement and adrenaline, she ran deeper into the forest without a care in the world. The wind in her fur felt cool as she made her way through the forest paths. 

Birds scattered as she moved past them swiftly and Vy did not stop until she came into a clearing and on top a small hill. She looked down upon the green forest, panting as she was short of breath. The scenery was beautiful and breathtaking, but her stomach was growling. 

She needed to hunt. 

Using her heightened hearing, she could hear countless prey scurrying across the forest floor. Picking one of them at random, she raced down the hill towards it and hunted it down. It was a small deer. The fresh blood and meat was delicious in her mouth. But soon enough, she was full. 

-The fur coat of the deer might be useful.-

Vy returned back to her human self and took out her dagger. Carefully, she skinned the deer and took the best parts of the meat and left the remains. Using her heightened senses, she found her way back to the town with ease. 

She went straight to the food market to sell the fresh veal to the butchers and sold the fur to the merchant. With a few extra coins, she returned back to her stall to start the day. As she came up the road, she noticed Lycster looking anxious and worried.

Lycster was worried when he could not find Vy when he woke up and was looking for her frantically. 

"See! I told you there was nothing to worry about," Carole reassured him when Vy came strolling back.

“Did you just reply me?”

“You can talk? You can converse with me?”

Vyrena was amazed. She knew from the memories of the host that this has never happened before. This was new.

She pondered what that meant, but she had more pressing questions.

A man with a white button up and glasses was attentively watching his computer screen as he called for his manager.

"What do you got for me Riyu?"

The manager approached the man in glasses, his name was Daito Hasegawa. He was the manager of Mystica Online's Monitoring Division within Proxit International. It was the job of the monitoring division to oversee players and insure that the game's progression went smoothly.

"It appears as though a new player has received the 'Luck is a Double Edged Sword' feat sooner than expected."

Daito's eyes widened with curiosity.

"That was fast, the game has only been out for a week! The analytics team said the chance for a player to obtain that feat was less than one in a million. What's this player's name?"

"Dynus, sir. And it doesn't stop at the feat he got…"

"What do you mean by that Riyu, just get it out."

Riyu Soto was the man's full name, he was just another desk worker at the monitoring division. Despite this he was a super fan of the game and enjoyed overseeing the players. However, even he was worried about what he was about to say.

"Sir, he already has the hidden quest for the 'Unrivaled Tamer' secret class."

Daito heaved a heavy sigh before wiping his face.

"The analytics team needs to do a better job. This totally throws off our current timeline. They told us secret classes wouldn't appear until around the first major update, and of all the possible classes it just had to be the Unrivaled Tamer."

"Exactly sir, what should we do about it?"

Daito was worried about the balance of the game since Dante had received the first quest for a secret class. In Mystica Online, secret classes were major power ups from regular ones. Furthermore, not all secret classes were created equally. If Dante were to pass his quest and get the Unrivaled Tamer class then it would mean that he had a major one up on the rest of the players.

"Unfortunately there's nothing we can do about it. If we meddle with player-assigned content then it will look bad for the company. For now just go ahead and keep a watchful eye on this 'Dynus' guy. Report back to me if anything else happens with him."

"Will do sir."

Dante accepted the quest from Gaimus after pouting momentarily. If he declined it then it would count as failing the quest, meaning he would never be able to have a secret class in the future. No person in their right mind would want such a thing.

Right after Dante closed the quest menu another quest popped up in front of his eyes, thankfully though this one wasn't ridiculous.

After checking the map Dante found the location of the World Portal and entered it. The appearance of the portal was like a stone archway with a yellow magical energy that functioned as the door.

The start location wasn't necessarily a huge deal. All four starting empires were on equal footing and had the same access to resources. The only real difference between the four were their geographical location. The Scylian Empire was in the North East of Zeroti, the Empire of Gentari was in the North West, the Akindi Empire was in the South East, and the Empire of Harpuus was in the South West.

Additionally, players weren't restricted by borders like NPCs unless they owned a noble title within a specific kingdom. This allowed them to travel to the various unique regions of the map without worry.

"I choose option 3, it sounds the coolest."

[Option 3 has been chosen. Are you sure you'd like to begin your journey in the Akindi Empire? (Y/N)]

"Yes I'm sure, let's get started!"

[Option 3 has been confirmed. Now traveling to the capital of the Akindi Empire: Gilded City.]

Dante's vision went white for a few seconds before he was plopped into the center of a shopping district within the Gilded City. Although he couldn't see much of the city yet, Dante could just tell by the sheer size of his surroundings and the amount of people around him that it was massive.

[You have arrived in the Gilded City.]

The name "Gilded City" came from the gigantic palace that sat at the center of the city. It was all white and lined with golden accents that made it look extremely luxurious. The dome that sat atop its highest tower was particularly eye catching as it was made purely out of gold.

Aside from the palace the rest of the city was extremely pleasant looking. White cobblestone lined the streets while various sized cottages, military posts, and businesses occupied the space around them. Overall the theme of white and blue was prevalent everywhere one looked.

After taking in his surroundings Dante immediately pulled up his stat sheet to assign the skill points he had earned from reaching level 2.

The base stats for players were assigned according to class, so in the case of Dante who was a summoner his stats were similar to that of a mage. He had low strength and fortitude (defense), but high intelligence and average agility. In addition he had three extra stats which were specific to summoners.

"Before I do anything let's see what the summoner stats are for in the help menu."

[Available Summons: Refers to the amount of summons the player owns. Includes spirits.]

"Spirits? That sounds interesting. I can assume what summon limit means as well, but what about soul power?"

[Soul Power: Refers to the amount of energy within the player's soul. This value dictates the summon limit of your character as well as the difficulty when taming monsters (100 soul power equates to 1 summon limit). Additionally, tamed monsters will occupy a certain amount of your soul power.]

"Ahh, so that's the handicap on summoners. Without it we'd be able to tame an army right away and destroy the balance of the game."

Dante then turned his attention back to the stat screen and decided to put one stat point into each stat aside from luck and HP to see how much they raised by per level. Afterward he was happy with the result.

With his stats out of the way Dante checked his inventory to see what he had equipped by default and was automatically depressed.

"Leather tunic, leather pants, leather shoes, and an iron sword. My base intelligence is higher than my strength, but they gave me a sword instead of a wand or staff?"

At the time Dante was unaware of the fact that a staff or wand required the user to know spells already to use, hence since he was a summoner without magic spells he was given a sword instead.

"There's no time to waste, I should check my map and go to the closest hunting grounds outside the city right away."

According to the map the lowest level hunting grounds nearby was Redry Forest. It was occupied by various mobs like wolves, bears, and bandits, but included non-hostile mobs like deer and rabbits as well.

Most new players in Mystica Online would choose to train in the training grounds before heading out into the forest to level up. This was because the level of mobs within Redry Forest was from 5-10, which would make it difficult for a level 2 player to progress in. Dante on the other hand was a different story.

For a summoner, their biggest weakness was their own strength. They relied on the power of summoned tames in order to do battle. Therefore, Dante wanted to immediately tame a monster in the forest to help him out.

Aside from that, to gain access to the training grounds in the Gilded City players had to complete a quest for the guard to the grounds. Dante was already limited on time thanks to the "Recognize by Gaimus" quest, so he couldn't go there even if he wanted to.

It took Dante about 10 minutes to get outside of the city and reach the forest. Thankfully the area he was spawned in was near the city gates.

The forest wasn't densely packed with trees, in fact it was rather sparsely packed. There were various meadows that surrounded it as well. The name "Redry Forest" came from the trees whose leaves would turn bright red in the fall.

Dante narrowed his eyes on a lone wolf he noticed near the edge of the forest. For now it would be easiest for him to target enemies that were by themselves since he was limited in hand-to-hand combat and had no other help.

"Let's go ahead and test this out!"

Dante sprinted to the wolf and as he drew closer he was able to see its basic stats.

By test out his skills he meant his taming skills. On the way to Redry Forest he had viewed the information window on the three skills he received for becoming a summoner.

- Cannot use this skill on a monster whose health is over 25% of their overall HP

- Can be used on all non-human or non-intelligent humanoid species (like elves, dwarves, etc)

- Cannot be used on dungeon bosses or raid bosses

- Cannot be used on the summons of other summoners or owned spirits

- Taming chance can be bypassed if the tame willingly accepts their owner

- Hold hand out toward the target and shout "tame" to activate

- When a target monster is successfully tamed the user will receive 75% of the original EXP and gold that would be obtained for killing it

Dante was less than 10 meters away from the wolf when it noticed him. The wolf immediately began to growl then charged toward him.

"All I have to do is weaken it first, then I can try to capture it."

The wolf was much faster than Dante, before he even realized it the wolf was pouncing in the air ready to attack him.

Dante quickly dodged by jumping and rolling to the side.

"That was close!"

The wolf narrowly missed Dante and it was well aware of that. To the wolf it was unlikely that Dante would be able to defeat him.

Dante recovered from his dodge as fast as possible then stood firm in place with his sword up, ready to swing when the chance arrived.

In the eyes of the wolf it took this as a challenge. The wolf sprinted to Dante again, but this time he was ready.

As the wolf came toward him Dante lowered his stance then swung sideways at the wolf when it was within range. To his surprise the attack actually went through, yet the wolf was still able to bite him

[53 HP lost due to enemy 'Grey Wolf' from Bite.]

53 damage! That number might not sound like much, but for Dante who had 125 HP it was just under half his overall health.

"That wasn't even a critical hit, I can't allow it to get another attack in or I might die…"

Death in Mystica Online was a scary concept for those who put in hard work. If a player died while playing their EXP bar would reset to 0% of their current level. In addition to that their account would be locked for 24 hours, making them unable to login until the 24 hours was up.

The wolf was aggravated with Dante and began growling furiously once again. However, it learned from its previous mistake of mindlessly charging at Dante, so it began to slowly circle him.

"It's on guard now because of my attack."

Dante checked the wolf's health before continuing.

"I have to handle this fast or I'll run out of time for my quest. If I get it down to 25% health I can capture it. As it stands the odds of a successful capture are roughly 40%."

Dante slowly began to walk closer to the wolf, then with one bone chilling howl it leapt at him. This time Dante got into a crouched stance, then as the wolf was atop him he jabbed the wolf's underbelly.

[Critical hit! 48 damage dealt to the target 'Grey Wolf' with Iron Sword.]

Due to the jab the wolf was flung behind Dante, causing it to fall and slide across the ground.

"Now's my chance!"

Dante ran toward the wolf and stabbed it before it could get back up.

"It has less than 40 HP left, time to catch it!"

Dante held out his hand then shouted at the top of his lungs.

"Tame!"

The wolf was covered in a white light as it staggered back to it's feet.

Dante closed the information window for Gnarl.

"Summon Gnarl!"

Gnarl's body appeared in front of Dante in a flash of white.

"He actually looks pretty cool."

Dante smirked at his new tame. Originally he didn't pay much attention to the wolf's appearance because he was focused on fighting it, but now he noticed its features.

Gnarl was the same size as an adult wolf with a full body of light grey hair. He also had a black stripe of hair down his back. Not only were his teeth intimidating, but his eyes were a light green which added to the intimidation effect.

"How much time do I have left?"

"Oh my god this is going to be a pain. Are you ready to do some hunting Gnarl?"

Gnarl growled at Dante and nodded. It appeared his aggressive personality would prove beneficial for Dante.

"Let's get started then!"

Dante ran off with Gnarl close behind him. Now that he had the help of a level 5 mob it would be far easier for him to clear the forest!

Ragna felt a bit dizzy after using Dragon Slave, and was now slowly opening his eyes. When he opened his eyes what greeted him was a bunch of notification pop ups. 

"Host has level up, Host is now level 15 congratulations."

"Congratulations host for earning 5,000 O.P points"
 
'Not as much as I lost, but it was still worth it, I level upped four times by killing that white wolf' Ragna smiled, but then he finally realized, that he was in a different place now. It seems like he was carried back into town... 

Ragna then checked his Invincible Barriers points, it was now at 320. Somebody did try to kill him when he fainted. While Ragna was thinking, who among the people who knew him would want to kill him, three of them entered his room.

The three Elders seeing Ragna awake were about to greet him, when they suddenly felt the same enormous pressure they felt fighting Ragna, it was trying to flatten them once more.

"Ragna why are you doing this?"

"What a foolish question old man, aren't you guys trying to kill me!" Ragna said in anger, the invincible barrier was losing points faster than he expected, even his telekinesis points were being used up as well, all because of the three Elders in front of him.

"Ragna, I think there is a misunderstanding between us..." Another Elder spoke with great difficulty as the pressure was getting heavier.

"Misunderstanding? You tried to kill me, so I'm going to cut you up!" Ragna said almost growling. Ren's personality was surely turning into Ragna's. The three Elders shook in fear as they explained themselves.

"No you really misunderstand Ragna, we didn't attack you. In fact, we found you unconscious, and brought you back to town to rest. Ask anybody, in this inn. Also since our first confrontation we already know we can't harm you, so why would we bother gaining you enmity?" 

When Ragna heard the Elder's explanation, he finally cool down a bit. 'What the elder said was true, unless they were idiots, they would not attack me, and then bring me to an inn to rest. I guess I'm just anxious because of the depleting Invincible Barrier points.

"Ok then, I know it wasn't you guys." Ragna then released his telekinetic hold on them. Once released, the Elders agitation quickly disappeared. 

"Now that the misunderstanding is solved... Ragna would you mind us asking, what you were fighting with?" This was what the Elders of the Heavenly Sword Sect were most curious about. A fighter that could suppress the three of them, must have fought something unbelievable to use such a big skill and then faint.

Ragna looked at the three Elders whose eyes were bursting with curiosity. Ragna found this funny, seeing this old men who were most probably past sixty or so, look like children waiting for their father to tell them a story. 

"I fought a fifteen meter white wolf." When the three Elders heard the enemy Ragna faced, they finally understood why he needed to use such a big attack to win.

"You killed a Wolf King!" One of the Elders exclaimed.

"Wolf King is that what it's called?" 

When the three Elders heard his reply, they didn't know wether to laugh or cry. This youth in front of them didn't even know what he killed, that he just accidentally faced a wolf king. Not only did he face a wolf king without preparation, he was actually able to kill it.

Ragna couldn't understand why there was more fear in the eyes of the Elders now than ever.

"Why? Is a Wolf King powerful?" Ragna asked curiously. 

It took the three Elders a few seconds to digest what Ragna just asked, before one of them was able to answer. "Yes a Wolf King wasn't just powerful, if it attacked the town even with all the Golden Core realm fighters, a lot of casualty's would be made. In terms of a human's cultivation, a wolf king is at the second level of the Transcending Mortality realm." 

Once the Elder was done explaining, Ragna finally understood what kind of monster he fought. 

'Ding' "Congratulations host for earning 4,000 O.P points" While the Elder was talking, Ragna received numerous O.P points. 'It seems like killing a Wolf King was a bigger deal than just destroying half of the northern forest. '

"I see, so why are you here in my room? Did you guys just want to ask about the Wolf King? If that's it and you have no more questions, I would like for you three to leave so that I can rest." 

When the three Elders heard Ragna's demand, not only did they not get angry, they even bowed respectfully before leaving. To them seniority didn't matter, only strength was king, with Ragna's strength he had the right to be so domineering. 
 
Ragna didn't really like to sound domineering, but that was the only way he could talk properly, also this was a test to understand what type of eastern fantasy world he was in. Seeing the meek attitudes of the three Elders, Ragna understood that in this type of world strength really was king. It doesn't matter if you're a king or an Elder in a prestigious sect, if you don't have strength then you have nothing.

'As I thought I really do need to level up faster. System with my current level what level of cultivation do I match.'

"The Host's level is currently the same as a person in the 3rd level Foundation Establishment realm."

'Foundation Establishment realm? Is that lower or higher than the Golden Core realm?'

"Answering Host, the Foundation Establishment realm is lower the Golden Core realm."

'Now that we have time... System can you tell me the cultivation realms in this world?'

"Answering Host... Not enough information gathered to understand cultivation realm of this world."

'What do you mean you don't understand? You keep on telling me different kinds of cultivation realms?'

"The questions of those realms are within the database, to answer host's current question of all the cultivation realms more data is required."

'Huh? How do you get the data then?'

"Data is required from the people surrounding the host. The host must be within twenty meters of the target so that the system may acquire data from the target."

'So you're able to acquire the knowledge of anyone within twenty meters of me? That's awesome!'

"That is wrong, the system is only able to acquire information about the target's cultivation realm. To gain more information the host needs to buy another system."

'Another system? Wait, I can buy another system?! Can you show me how much the system from the Library of He*ven's P*th'

"Library system (Library of He*ven's P*th tree)  (5,000,000,000 points)"

'What the hell! Five billion points, how long will that take, even getting to 10,000 point is a chore. System show me the cheapest system.'

It was late, and the sun had already fallen and disappeared. Cold breath filled the place, and the group was gathered under the thick darkness where even their cold breath was not visible.
 
'There is no exception.'
 
The identity of the mess was the survivors.
 
Bang Hyun-wook approached the survivors immediately as soon as Kim Tae-hoon's permission was given … approaching and talking to his unrequited love, Joo Ha-yeon.
 
The Mac Clan was accepting applicants. If you passed the Mac Clan tests, you could move with it.
 
At his word, the twenty-two survivors announced their intention to join the Mac Clan without a single exception. It was natural for survivors who thought that there might be a chance of life, even if was the worst case!

The woman, who made Bang Hyun-wook take action, was one of those who looked at Kim Tae-hoon clearly.
 
'Her eyes are not dead.'
 
The cute and pretty appearance, the hairstyle that was cut short with a cat-like face, was obviously popular from appearance alone.
 
Bang Hyun-wook had said, "She was an aspiring entertainer." Although she had not made her debut yet, she was still a trainee at an entertainment agency of fair size.
 
Of course, Kim Tae-hoon did not really think much of the fact.
 
"Then we'll start classification." His role was to pick out the good and bad from these applicants.
 
"Who had a career in a professional like manufacturing and agriculture?"
 
At his question, four people looked around and carefully raised their hands.
 
Three men, one woman. The woman looked to be in her twenties, the men in their thirties.
 
"What's your field?"
 
"I worked at a factory, not very professional, but I did a lot of things."
 
"Well, I worked on the construction site. My career was pretty good. I'm good at tools, though I don't have a license."
 
"I'm a nurse, and I'm very good at it, though I've only got a few years of experience. Please…"
 
There was no power in the voices of those who answered sequentially. They lacked confidence.
They were suspicious that they could be saved by saying these things.
 
One of the four was different.
 
"I'm a lawyer." He introduced his job with a pretty confident expression as if he were waiting for the question. "For reference, I'm with the Haesung Law Firm."
 
He also had confidence that he had not showed before, adding his own affiliation.
 
It was pretty good. The Haesung Law Firm was not the best in Korea, but it was in the top ten of Korean law firms.
 
The combined income of the three people who had introduced their professions earlier would not equal the income of the man who said he was a lawyer.
 
Of course, he deserved to be confident. And the attitude would be worth if it was a week ago.
 
But not now. "The three, except for the lawyer, are accepted."

It was a terrible, miserable sight.
 
However, the test to cut off the legs of the Wolves, compared to their desperation, did not seem to have much meaning.
 
Kim Tae-hoon did not intend to deny the fact.
 
It would be useful to practice stabbing the insides of meat and bones, cutting off the dead monster's legs was not meaningful.
 
But his reason for doing this was simple.
 
"There is no reason to accept them unless they are prepared to eat a monster's corpse."
 
Can you do it, or not? It did not mean to see it.
 
In the first place, Kim Tae-hoon did not expect much from the survivors. His expectations were just vague expectations.
 
So, what Kim Tae-hoon wanted to see was their will to do it, or not.
 
If they do not have enough fighting spirit to cut apart a dead monster body and the will to survive, they are just living dead men, eating and making poo.
 
He didn't want to have such a survivor.
 
Fortunately, the survivors had strong wills to live. Strong enough that they were able to meet Kim Tae-hoon and the Mac Clan alive!
 
The way the survivors came here was hell.

Eventually, all twenty-two survivors crossed the line proposed by Kim Tae-hoon.
 
"Passed."
 
After the short words of Kim Tae-hoon, the faces of the survivors who had wrestled with the hide, muscles, flesh, and bones of the Sabretooth Wolf for an hour, were filled with cheers and deep fatigue.
 
"Clean the body."
 
Kim Tae-hoon did not give any congratulations or shake hands with them.
 
The night was late enough, and the test was over. Now was the time to take the rest that had been originally planned.
 
The Mac Clan must move again tomorrow when the sun rose.
 
They had to hunt monsters, get food, make roads, and secure relics.
 
And they had to repeat it again and again. They had to be ready for tomorrow, which would be more hopeless than today.
 
'It's over now.'
 
Most of all, death was predicted for Kim Tae-hoon. Within three to five years, he would be dead.
 
It was a time-limited life. He did not have time to celebrate something and to comfort.
 
'I have to find a way.'
 
Kim Tae-hoon did not intend to meet the fate of the dream Kim Tae-hoon.
 
That was how the night began.

At 5 AM, Jang Sung-hoon was not able to fall asleep easily.
 
The cold weather was the reason, but the fact that his mind was full of the shining Golden Glass was the biggest reason he could not sleep.

Naturally, Jang Sung-hoon's gaze was on the blazing fire, and he headed for the man who was in front of the fire.
 
'Boss?'
 
Kim Tae-hoon was in front of the fire.
 
He was flying an arrow around himself, a featherless arrow which had only an arrowhead and shaft, while sipping coffee from a mug in his right hand.

With the highly trained skills that he had gained from his previous occupation, he starts to hunt the monsters down and manages to win, saving countless people who were also at the mall.

The First Hunter is a short Korean, action-fantasy novel situated in a post-apocalyptic world. Monsters start appearing out of nowhere and people are unlocking strange powers. Those who unlock such powers are called ‘Hunters’, ones with the strength to kill the monsters. To fight and survive, that is their goal. Society crumbles and the world burns.

A very fun novel that dives into the plot almost instantly. The novel is interesting in a way that it depicts a lot of human nature and what people would do in a situation such as this is quite an accurate manner. The character development is also very good as you get to learn about the characters, their backgrounds, and their stories. All in all, this is another novel I’d recommend to a lot of readers who are interested in reading fantasy and gaming novels.

I didn't want to just jump in and start trying to skin this monstrosity, considering it ruined my shirt and almost killed me I wanted to make a new shirt out of its hide. A little dark, but I can't go around shirtless or wearing rags forever. Looking over the size of the creature again, even if I messed up I should still end up with enough for a shirt and maybe more. 

I started to mentally think about the anatomy of the wolf and the places where I should begin the cuts for skinning. I spent some time logically thinking about how best to proceed. Five minutes later I received two new notifications.

With the new information I had gained from studying the best; I clinched my fist around my dagger and started my work.

After an hour of sweaty and bloody work went passed I finally removed the pelt and was rewarded with the following notifications.

Two levels in skinning, and I didn't ruin the pelt. Elated by my success I started in on butchering the wolf.

I was meticulous in every cut and slice I made. I tried to cut the large muscles into smaller; more manageable portions. 

Another two hours flew by. At this point I was drenched in sweat and covered in the beast's blood. But I was proud of my work looking at the notification.

I wouldn't be going hungry any time soon. I took the wolf pelt and made sure no meat was left on the pelt and laid it out to start drying. 

With the pelt drying and the meat safely in my inventory I quickly made my way over to pond. Reminding myself of my past mistakes; I took off my boots and washed them off. Making sure no water made its way inside them. Dealing with soggy boots wasn't fun.

With the boots safely off to the side I made my way into the water. I washed and scrubbed myself as well as I could with my hands. The soreness in my muscles was being washed away as I scrubbed the grime and gore from my body. By the time I was clean and climbed out of the water I felt completely renewed. My body was filled with energy, it was like I just woke up after a long sleep. It was already sometime in the afternoon but with the amount of energy I now had a plan started to form.

Making sure I was dry enough not to soak my boots I put them back on and made my way over to the drying wolf pelt. It looked like it would take days or longer for it to fully dry. I vaguely remembered reading how skins were stretched across a rack to dry on Earth. I had wood in my inventory; and I could cut strips off the ruined parts of my tunic that could be used to bind the wood together.

Excited by the idea I got straight to work. Using my dagger, I was able to cut plenty of strips off the ruined tunic, and I was able to salvage a vest out of the ruined garment. I donned the vest and started constructing the frame to stretch the skin over. 

The first several attempts all collapsed, but I didn't let this deter me and kept trying. I was eventually able to construct something that would work. By no means was it pretty but it functioned so I considered it a job well done. I cut small holes in the skin and using extra strips tied it to the frame. I then placed the frame as close to the fire as I felt comfortable; I was still scared that it might fall into the fire or the pelt would catch on fire. Satisfied with what I had accomplished so far I stood back and admired my work. 

There were still a few hours of daylight left so I made my way into the woods and started to cut smaller saplings and gathered as many small branches with leaves as I could. I also managed to harvest plenty of soft grass that would make sleeping on the ground more comfortable. I had spent way too many days in this world sleeping on a hard ground. 

Making my way back I started working on making a wooden tent like structure. After some more trial and error, I was able to get a small shelter made in the clearing. I layered the leafy branches on top of the wood, hoping to make it as waterproof as possible. I ended up with just enough room to crawl inside and lay down. Inside I then took out the rest of the leafy branches and laid them down, then on top of them I put down a layer of the grass. 

I was becoming a regular survivalist. I then took out the fox and rabbit furs I had collected so far, made sure they were as clean as I could make them, and laid them fur side up on top of the grass. I tried out my new makeshift bed, it was actually super comfortable. 'I've out done myself' I thought to myself as I savored the comfortable bed.

Survivalist level 3, nice! It did irk me that the system considered my shelter and comfy bed to be poor in quality though. I worked hard on them and they were pretty comfortable, but I had to admit to myself I wasn't the best craftsman or survivalist. 'It's still a lot better than having to sleep on a hard ground,' I thought to myself. 

I now had a shelter to sleep in; the wolf pelt drying on my makeshift wrack. Overall not a bad days work, it helped ease the stress from yesterdays close call. It was still bothering me how close to dying I had come. 

"But I survived in the end, and I will continue to survive." I stated firmly, resolving my will to continue growing stronger. Tomorrow I will go hunting again and put my new spells to the test, I had to see how much my strength had increased.

***Authors Note*** I am have to pause the publication of any new chapters for now due to my work schedule in the medical field with the current pandemic. When things start to slow back down for me I will continue the story. I wish it could be otherwise but I have no option.
