In year 3000, one game changed the life of all humanity. 

Dystopian Tales Online [DPO] is a Massive Multi-Player Online Role Playing Game introduced by the Foster Science and Toys Corporation, a leading billion dollar gaming company that is known for their extensive gaming preferences attracting players in all ages. 

Known as the Foster Gaming Co., the games are created by a team of professional programmers and network technicians resulting to a highly defined computer generated graphics with effects almost close to reality. Now, one of their newly created game, [DPO], is said to be the promising 'new generation' gaming.

DPO is a new game defined for its unique first person gaming experience. According to the creators, the name Dystopian is placed as the front title because of the self-generating genre of the game. That is to say, choosing between worlds and maps is possible. Unlike in a normal MMORPG where quests and the maps given are commanded by default, in DPO, each decision will lead to a [Happy End] or [Bad End] giving players almost real-to-life situations.

Not only that [FREE WILL] existed in this game, also, a self character personalization and weapon creation is possible. Self Character Personalization [SCP] is a character generator where you can freely design your character. Hair color, eyes, accessories, even the arrangement of buttons and ribbons on the selected clothing can be adjusted. 

There is also the Face Copy Recognition where you can make your characters look the same as you! All you need to do is to take a picture of yourself and crop the part of your face. Paste it to the editing software and do the favorable adjustments.

Weapon Creation also works the same. For all the players who are weapon creation enthusiasts, this generator created a huge impact to these people who are tired of using market weapons or droppings. Through this generator, the player can costumize the power level and attributes of the created weapon. You can also add and modify, or just simply disassemble it. The generator has the Blueprint option and Copy that helps in creating the weapon smoothly.

However, even though this Weapon Creation is a good extension of the game, the weapons created under this method happen to process a 'trial and error' command. Due to the Blueprint option, one can simply create a weapon. But the blueprints that are present are coming from the game itself, which only shows that creating a new specialized weapon would mean that the designer shall start from scratch. 

One material might not fit the other. The concept is almost the same with forging equipments where only chosen crystals can match the weapon's requirments. If it exceeds the valu, the weapon or equipment will break. The Weapon Creation might need an all out plan but the success of a created weapon outlimits the normal ones. 

Another factor of the game is its classification of Races and Archetypes. Races are the so-called bloodlines that is divided to five main races: Beasts, Elven, Humanoid, Half-Ling, and the Undead. One player will choose a race and after that they can freely choose whatever archetypes they want.

Archetypes are like sub-classes. They are divided under the races. for example, under the Elven Race comes the archetypes of mages and witches. One can choose their original race, and also can choose archetype from other races. 

The archetype of warrior is under the Humanoid RACE. If the player chooses the Elven Race, he or she can freely have the warrior archetype. Meaning, each player has his or her own characteristics almost different from the other. 

A single player can choose up to ten archetypes. 

Other than these features, DPO is also using a virtual reality helmet. This makes players to see and experience the world of Dystopian as if they are really there. Buying the console includes this freebie, while those who already have their VR can just simply exclude it. 

Like in any known VR games, this equipment will be worn by the player. The specialized screen inside the VR will reflect the game. But before playing, one should log-in by using the computer keyboard and stuff. Once in, voice command and hearing effects will be possible. Though, joysticks are still needed to move the character of the game. 

However, no matter how advance or interesting a game can offer, the decline of such products is gradually showing all throughout the years. It is true that the Fosters Gaming Co., is a truly advance company for online gaming, but this is not the only company that issues high rated games. As the year progress, technology also have risen to its peak, reaching its final destination in the middle of the 25th century. 

Holographic TVs, skin thin smart phones, garbage androids, automated cooking utensils, electricity generated wheel-less cars, nanorobots constructions, humanoid artificial intellegence, highly advanced security system, traffic drones - everything around the world changed from the primitive lifestyle to an all technology yet nature friendly world. 

After the 5th world war, the countries of the world signed a pact to create a more peaceful world out of violence. Reaching the 25th century changed the course of all the humanity that was totally devastated by the preceeding wars. Laws are reformed, new kinds of goverment are experimented, and technology is tested. At the end of this century, a new form of beings are created that advanced to the present date. 

The progress is fast paced. New inventions are created, making life in Earth easier than before. Voilence is banned that lessened robbery and murder. Education was taken high priority, giving almost a ninety-nine percent literacy rate, one percent as the exception of the newborn babies. Medicine is also enhanced with humans reaching a hundred years an average because of good health. 

Famine, floods, earthquakes are now can be measure through computers. By just guessing when these events will happen, the authorities will create an evacuation plan to ensure the people's safety. Other than dying of old age, none of the people of the earth suffered. 

Well, this is just the first chapter of the humanities greatest change.

After 5 melleniums, the technology slowly advanced. Though the peace is being maintained, no new discoveries were learned. The laws that was created along time ago didn't change. The lifestyle and everyday life continued but nothing much added to it. With all the diseases, infections, disasters being surpressed by machines - it is as if the world suddenly stopped caring.

Nobody actually cared.

That is why games suddenly became a big hit. With violence out of the way, people seem to find games as creative and fun. With most of these computer games required combat and skills, plus the settings on the primitive time, the people are piqued with interest. Each house is estimated to have at least one gaming equipment for the family to play.

But then, this generation also never lasted.

Every year, the same style genre of games are being released with only quests and names different from each other. Pro-gamers can finish playing these games for a week that will be given a rate in website where guides and maps of any games can be found. This online ranking is worldwide, meaning, if one pro-player says that this one game is crap, expect that everyone will read about it. 

And nobody will buy the game.

Just in time of the release of Dystopian Tales Online, only those gamers who are hardcore fans of this company's games bought it. Almost a month has passed but they didn't even reach the quota of selling the only one thousand copies they distributed. Though, this changed drastically after the end of second month.

The reason why nobody bought the game, aside from the few, until now is because most of the gamers are waiting for the pro-players to give their rate. After a month and two, these pro-players only posted the picture of the game and only single sentence of review made the whole world wanted to grab a copy of it. 

"However, that is not what actually happened to groups of people who are not able to play this game."

Questions started to rise when the demand of the game suddenly bursted. Knowing the excellence of this game, there's no doubt that it will sell great. But then, why did the Foster gaming only released one thousand copies? One could expect that investing more copies could give them more profit.

"An experiment to a selected few..."

Unknown to all is a hidden agenda created by the company. To enhance the gaming experience and to create a new technological advancement, the team invented a kind of the game that will bring the players to a virtual reality. That is, conjuring the whole being of the player to the game where they will experience ALL of their senses without restrictions.

It is true that with their current technology, games can now be done with three of the senses present - sense of sight, touch, and hearing. Some games may include the sense of scent and taste but still not fully intact with the game. They still need props like preparing food beforehand or creating a room while wearing a VR to fulfill the sense.

But this is different. 

A known engineer, Tristan Foster, the son of the head of the Foster Gaming Co., designed a theory that suggests that creating a dimension of games is possible. However, creating this world using computers of THIS world will only create a form but not the experience. In order for them to create [THIS] dimension, they must look for something that is existing in this world, but in the same time, not happening in this exact world.

DREAMS - this word perfectly fit the needed requirement.

Tristan explained the run through of his creation. According to him, a machine will be created to stimulate the brain while undergoing REM. Synapses will be controlled using vibrations, sending signals to the control center of the brain where dreams are created. This will send the compacted information clearly, attaching it to the game's server, then entering the world of dreams as if logging-in in a game.

Experts asked about this weird experiment. Of all, why did he chose dreams? Up until now, it is still a mystery to them why people dream and what is its purpose. Inserting a variable that is not tangible would be useless and can be held to be a dysfuction. Besides, of all the body parts, brain contains the biggest mystery of all.

The approval of this project lasted for years. Tristan showed data and statistics, including familiar theories and common sense. As years pass by, all the members of the team realized the point slowly. Few pages of research started to pile up with complex equations only they could understand. Experts are called in to help and somehow proved the theories possible.

It is as if creating a new world is this generation's mission.

Five years of work and Tristan succesfully earned his reward. Showing the detailed blueprint of how the system works left those people who mocked him for being mad. Human ethics and rights are not violated, the safety of this whole experiment showed through trials that he himself created. Tristan became the first test subject. 

Applying this, Tristan planned a worldwide experiment but with the condition that the subjects should be as well as smart as him. The safety of the experiment is succesful due to his intellegence. Tristan is a prodigy, started studying computer engineering at the age of twelve. If this variable cannot be met, he's afraid that the results would be different.

That is why he designed the Dystopian Tales Online. And in this game, a real world is hidden. Everyone thought that he named it Dystopian Tales due to the game's feature of choosing a specific genre. But nobody knows that his real reason of choosing this word is from the description intself.

Dystopian - the world of suffering. The ability to twist reality. 

After the first release of the game, some of the players reported that there is this weird test with one thousand questions in multiple choice right after the installation is finished. Taking the test or not taking it will not actually affect the game's features. However, to those people who took the test and passed the margin was not able to play the game.

Instead, at the end of the test, the whole game was terminated and a black screen will show up. In the middle of this black screen is a set of numbers that happen to be a telephone number. Of course, as if common sense, everyone called the telephone number. And then they are greeted with:

[HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF A FALSE LEGEND?]

Inside the game, Dystopian Tales Online, runs the world they called [VIRTUAL REALITY]. Those who managed to praise their worth are called to create a contract with the Foster Gaming Co. By participating the experiment, the subjects will be called as adventurers of the Virtual Reality. 

They are requested to play the game every night during their REM sleep with a technology the company will provide. Also, they are not just playing for fun. Because of the vitality of this experiment, the subjects are given insurances and a salary of ten thousand pesos per month (about 200USD$). All they have to do is play and level up. 

"It's something new and kind of amazing," Aud said, playing the straw of his juice.

Looking around, faces of men and children gathered around him. His group occupied half of the seats in front of the bar, rather, they are found on their usual places again. 

Aud always sits on the middle most part with Frass on his left. Leon and Shin would sit anywhere they want but often sits beside Aud. Two kids will be sitting beside them with another girl at the very end. 

For seven years, these people sure have grown old.

"Wait a second," Shin called out, touching the tip of his chin thinking. "How did you know that we are playing Virtual Reality? I mean, we are playing with DTO players right? The difference is that they are seeing it through a computer while we are all inside the game."

Aud blinked, wondering what he should answer. 

He looked over at Leon who is in between them, currently staying away from their conversation because he is playing a bonus mini game in front of them. A black translucent screen is floating at the front of the elf. He's actually duelling with the bartender who is cleaning glasses at their front while waiting for Leon to move. 

"Hmmm? What?" Leon noticed Aud looking over him. Despite of not joining the conversation, he knows what they are discussing about. 

"You have something to say?" Aud said.

"Ah... let's see..." Leon clicked the screen on the mini game to show his move. 

"First of all, DTO is a first person perspective game. Unlike any games, you can never have a full control of the actions especially that everyone is still a noob at it. I guess even the players who played the year earlier will not ever be able to move it flawlessly."

"However, we managed to break it as if we are actually in the scene. Can you remember the Speed Combo that you did? If it was from a computer's perspective, you will be hitting the monster in one place. You can't move to places due to the rate that you have."

"Whoa, so you mean you were able to recognize us by just looking? Wait a second, how did you know about that," Shin exclaimed. "Are you watching us the whole time? Why didn't you help?"

"Not really," Aud took a sip from his juice. "We are actually heading to the floor's boss when we saw a group of low level players entering the dead end. We just followed and watched. It's not that we have any responsibility to help you."

Shin grumbled, not believing the words he said. 

A loud alarm suddenly sounded making Virtual Reality players to look up. Like in any other day, a rectangle with smooth edges will appear above, showing number in zeroes. The VR players recognized it, stopping or hurrying whatever they are doing to log out.

This zeroes inside the rectangle is the system's time for all the virtual players. That is, the VR server will start as early as six and ends at three in the morning. Whenever the clock hits three, an alarm will appear across the accounts to announce that it is their time to log out. Only twenty minutes extension is allowed.

The purpose of this action is to run the maintainance to collect the data of the game. Also, the REM state would be very weak during these hours and the machine might not be able to grasp the needed information. Once the player is logged-out, he or she will continue sleeping until their body clock wakes them up. 

Moreover, if a VR player fails to log out in the game with the given time, the account will be forced erased and the player has to restart again.

The twenty minutes time is now counting down. 

One by one, players' status changed to offline with green dots turning red. Some are still on the process of saving their profiles while checking their inventory. The twins and the girl from their group exited first. Frass also took his way out only waiting for Aud to finish.

"Another day, another game. Well, see you later guys," Shin said, looking at them while pressing some commands in his profile. After a second, his character vanished and his status is now offline. 

"I guess we have to continue this game later," Leon heaved a sigh.

The bartended nodded with the agreement. Leon closed the mini game screen and opened his menu. Other than him, nobody can see. Actually, nobody can see the other's player menu unless if shown purposely. He scrolled the space in front of him until he reached the end of the line. 

"I'll be off now," he told the two. "See you again later."

"Bye," Only Aud responded. 

All of the remaining players logged out in a succession until no one is left.

When technological advancement created the norms of the world, people had fallen to the age where peace occupied every nation. With the fear of stagnation, humans developed many games to simulate worlds that somehow substituted as their 'fighting grounds'.

However, a certain game was developed that caused a rift amongst all the games. Only players whose IQ had reached a hundred and half above is allowed to play, and said to be the games made for the geniuses.

The game is developed to create the humanities' next step to evolution - and that is opening a portal to the next world.

"Hey Hime, do you think that my wish was worth it?" Asked Joseph as he contemplates the fact that he just used up 2 out of his 3 wishes for one ability. 

"Your wish is about quality over quantity, So technically speaking you did not waste an 'ounce of your wishes."(Hime)

"For my third and final wish, I would like you to give me infinite System Points!..." (Joseph)

"*Ding*....Host does not have the required wishes to pay for this option!..." Replied Hime, as our MC spat blood once again, due to the frustration of not having enough wishes. (ED: He's easier to offend than a white collage student)

"Welp, moving on then!...so in that case my last wish will be a System Point Generator that is upgradable!" Said Joseph as he quickly recovered from massive blood loss yet 'AGAIN'!" (Joseph) (Author: Still don't know how he gets blood lost even tho his at his spirit form)

As Joseph ignore the first part of the announcement, He ponders over the things he hath done in his past life to get all of this benefits.

"What exactly did I do?" said Joseph outloud.

"*Ding* In cultivation world you reached the very pinnacle, the overlord. Conquering all the lands while destroying all your enemies, you stood at the peak of all beings until your best friend Arthur and your little brother Jacob poisoned your birthday cake with Devil's Regret. As many of your subjects rejoiced at the news of your death as those who wept.

In the DBZ you subdued anyone in your path, weather they be gods, demons, or even the creator themself. To rebuild your clan the saiyan-jin, you trained under the destruction god and eventually rebuilt your clan. Unfortunately saiyans do not live forever and as you aged your power declined until you were killed in a rebellion on your birthday after 10,000 years of your rule. By the rebellion's end there were none left to cry for you.

In the Naruto World you reach the peak, and they deemened you as the strongest. You united all the various gangs(Ex.akatsuki) across the land and overthrew the ninja villages or so you thought. Unfortunately some ninjas survived and vowed revenge on you and revenge they got. They tied burned you alive after poisoning your birthday cake to weaken you….Does this Satisfy Host question?" "Should I really be burdened with this type of Power? Hime you do know that this young master is already too powerful to enter the lower worlds I wanted to visit, they would not be able to contain my powers. Heck, it might even lead to their destruction! What will happen to my Waifus then?!" Replied Joseph with a hint of bitterness and narcissism.

"Calculating all of the possibilities for the host to try….*Ding*..... Host can just Reincarnate as a baby, I will restrict your power till you reach the viable age where the planet itself has benefitted on the small amount of energy leakage you've been giving it and will have it's foundations and inhabitants potential drastically increased and strengthened." His First Life he lived his life as a Normal Otaku being on Earth.

       Engineering comprised three parts; starting with the large main engines that took up the entire fifth of the aft of the ship then the engine monitoring and control area, which was a maze of pressurized platforms, catwalks, and crawlways that surrounded the main engines.   These traditional fusion engines took up over 80% of the space and ran very hot and hectic, requiring around the clock monitoring and maintenance as moving parts for the massive cooling system required lubrication and its strained pipes sprung leaks frequently.
The third part of engineering was tucked away on the top deck of the aft section.  It was a large reactor and generator room that housed the Quantum Speed Generator System; referred to as the QSG.  Unlike the rest of engineering that was hot, dirty and looked its age with thousands of makeshift repairs and weld marks, the QSG room was kept very cold and very clean.  Any repair done on it was followed by a thorough cleaning and paint over.  The equipment was very sensitive and could develop problems with just a particle of dust on any number of components.  Smaller QSG units used on ships like fighters were just as sensitive but were also self-contained and much easier to maintain.  For a ship with a mass greater than a small city, it required an immense system, one that had to be consistently calibrated from the inside.  It was normally managed by a crew of eight at all times, but with the entire system cold and offline they had all been assigned to repairs on the main engines.
Ryan, dressed in thermals covered with a clean room suit, sat in the chair at the main control station.  From the look of the room itself no one would have seen anything wrong, but if they could understand what he was looking at on the split screen in front of him, they would know just how bad it was.  He was comparing the burned out power system with the original specs to see if there was any hope of fixing fried components.  Any other system on the ship could be fixed with spare parts or even created from scratch in their machine shop, yet the QSG system wasn't something that could easily be patched up or rebuilt.  The complexity was on the molecular level and took micro-mechanical factories weeks just to make a single part.  What Ryan was looking at was a mess, but he still hoped he would see something that he could do to get it working again.  Without a functional QSG, the best speed they could achieve would get them to the nearest starbase in just under 2500 years.
As Ryan studied the system, he determined that 20% could be fixed with simple parts replacement and repairs, and about 40% could be rebuilt if he could scrounge together the right components.  Yet the remaining 40% was so fused they would require complete replacements.   Even if he rerouted systems around the damaged circuits and brought the generator back online, he wouldn't be able to generate enough of a field to compensate for the mass of the giant.
"How am I supposed to move a bloody brick with nothing more than an ant," he muttered to himself.  In his gut, he knew there was something he was missing, but couldn't put his finger on it.  Reaching up to rub his eyes his hand was stopped by the clear face mask of the clean room suit.  Yet that momentary distraction was just what he needed as he envisioned a portion of the solution.
"Wait a minute. The ship's mass has changed," he said aloud to himself.
Pulling up the internal sensors he ran a complete scan, and the number was amazing.  With the reduction of the crew, ships, weapons and actual pieces of the ship lost in battle the total mass had been reduced 18%.  If he could find a way to bring that down another 9% without compromising structural integrity he just might be able to get them back home.  Not wanting to create false hope he went to work to see if he could get the QSG back up at all.

All of these companies had made Billions if not Trillions of dollars since their creation. I want to get a chance to earn money just like they did."

"That's an interesting dream, I guess?" Sadie replied unsure of what to say. "Why did you want to make a marketing empire? Didn't you have other ideas about your future?"

"Sort of, but not really." Lisa said giving a shrug. She then moved on to the next set of large rusty looking nuts. "When I was a kid I wanted to be a gymnast in the Olympics, but that dream didn't last long."

"How come? You seem like you have the skills, even now." Sadie asked. 

"War." Lisa replied flatly. "My family was forced to move several times. The bombings kept us always on the move. So I wasn't able to train anywhere. By the time I turned eighteen I had decided that would I join the military. For obvious reasons my family was very much against me joining. However, I don't think I made the wrong choice in the end. Though there are things I regret…" Lisa trailed off. 

Sadie could tell that she likely had gone through something traumatic and decided not to press any further. "So if you joined the military, why do you now want to make marketing empire?" She asked edging the issue. 

As if unfazed Lisa went back to work. "Well, I wanted to get in the military as an officer, they get better pay. So I went to college and tried to learn Engineering. It turns out my mathematics skill are lacking, but I did well in the mechanics aspects." Lisa said wiping at her brow. "I switched over to marketing major and to a different university. I finished all my courses and then joined the military as an Officer. Even though I switched majors and university's I still crammed in as much as I could. I finished it all in about three and a half years."

"Under four years?!" Sadie said with surprise. "How did you manage to stay focused like that? I could hardly keep up with my own schooling and classes."

"I did some in class studies and everything else with was on online classes. Between you and me, copy and paste works just great if you site your sources. To be honest, I only passed because I read the projects required aspects and did the bare minimum of what my teachers wanted." Lisa said shaking her head. 

"Still, that's just way to fast." Sadie remarked.

"Any way, after that I joined the military and how, long story short, I ended up here. In this old dam, working on building my fortune." Lisa said giving an exaggerated mock smile. 

"At least you're trying. Most people wouldn't have even considered doing this. Especially me." Sadie replied. 

At that moment Lisa finished loosening the last nut to the top of the generator. She put the large tools aside and started to unplug all the wires and cords connected to it. Pointing at the wires Lisa explained. "This part right here. This is called the Busbar. It carries all the electricity up to the Transformers up above."

Sadie nodded and silently watched Lisa work. She did, however, see that the Busbar tube ran up into the wall and disappeared upwards into an even larger tube that ran towards the power house. She assumed that those large ugly green cylinders were the Transformers Lisa was referring too. 

Next, Lisa was going to remove the heavy metal lid. She was definitely not going to try and lift this lid with her own strength. Fortunately, hanging above the generators was a horizontal Overhead Crane that was placed there exactly for this occasion. 

Lisa tried to turn it on, but it only let out a drawn out beep. Meaning that there was an error in its system and she had to fix it first. Fortunately, she had brought the manual for the cranes operation as well.

Scanning through the manual and observing the operating panel, Lisa found that some wires had become corroded. She turned off the breaker so she wouldn't get electrocuted. After rewiring and splicing them, the crane started to function. The Overhead Crane would travel along a track attached to the ceiling, which traveled the full length of the dam tunnel. This way it could reach all the generators, as was in the original design. 

Lisa lowered the two hooks that hung from each end of the crane and secured them to the two thick steel shackles on the lid. Pressing the lift button on the control panel, the lid slowly started to rise, exposing the generators components inside. Then Lisa moved the crane further down the tunnel so that the lid would not be hanging above them while she worked. 

Sadie marveled at the complex appearance of the generator parts. "How do you know that you can actually work on this thing?"

"I did a two week summer internment at a company that worked on generator repairs." Lisa replied making sure that the cranes load was safely in place. "I got to help out with cleaning a smaller version of this generator while I was there. Like I said before, I am really good at the mechanics aspects." 

Then she got a far away look on her face as she continued. "Kind of got the knack for this kind of stuff from my dad. He was a mechanic for commercial air planes and had lots of books related to mechanics in the house. I read a lot of them as a kid."

"I see." Sadie replied looking at the circular metal devices inside. "So what are all these parts? I haven't a clue as to what these are."

"Well, I'll explain while I look them over." Lisa said picking up the manual for the generator. She also picked up another smaller wrench to use as well. "So this rusty red outer part is the actual generator that converts the mechanical energy from the turbine into electrical energy. This happens when the rotor, this green one, spins around against this blue part called the Stator." 

Lisa then pointed at the various parts with the wrench. "The Stator are these rows of small stationary airfoils attached to the casing of an axial-flow turbine, positioned between the rotors." Then she pointed down below the Rotor and Stator. "That's the casing that covers the shaft. That shaft goes way down to where the turbine is. So since this is obviously a dam, the turbine is moved by water as it falls down a pipe and hits the turbine. Water turns the Turbine, Turbine spins the Shaft, which turns the Rotor and then rubs on the Stator to create electricity for the Generator to collect. Pretty simple set up, right?"

"I think so." Sadie said squinting at all the parts. All this mechanics talk was making her head spin. However, she didn't want to seem dumb so she asked, "Is that all there is to making electricity? I figured it would be harder to make."

"Well there is more to it, but those are just the basic parts that you will need. The rest of the parts just support and assist the main parts so they function properly." Lisa said. She had just started loosening the bolts on the generator to remove it. 

"I need to take this off to check for broken parts, rust, and copper corrosion. I'll need to do this with all the parts, so this might take me a while." Lisa said pausing to look up at Sadie.

"So what do you need me to do?" Sadie asked. She was feeling kind of useless watch Lisa do all the work.

"Well, let's see." Lisa said pausing from her work. "I know we are going to get thirsty while we work, but we don't have anything to drink. So can you go back outside and put water into the pot and boil it for over three minutes?"

"Sure I can do that." Sadie nodded. 

"Sweet. Then once you get back I need your help with writing stuff down." Lisa said while raising her hands up for Sadie to see. "My hands are getting covered in rust and all this old sludge from lubricant. I need to make a list of all the things I am going to need. I have a contact of mine that might be able to sell me the stuff I need."

"Alright, I won't be gone long." Sadie replied turning to leave. She didn't go far when Lisa called to her. 

"Hey, Sadie." Lisa called. "Be careful up there alone. I don't know anyone that lives around here yet. If someone comes here that's not John or Hanna, come back to me as quickly as you can."

"I understand." Sadie said giving a reassuring smile.

Lisa nodded and got back to work on the generator. Looking at all the different parts she felt slightly relieved. The parts were in surprisingly very good condition. Other than the light corrosion on copper parts, some rust on other parts and the desperate need for clean lubricant, the overall condition of generator two was in great shape. Things were really getting off to a decent start. 

She couldn't help but smile. Soon the townspeople would have power and she would have money in her pockets!

Several years after major nuclear events, followed by the rise of robotic armies, have caused the world to become post-apocalyptic. The year is 2276 and Earth is now full of anarchy, corruption and death. A lone woman carrying a large backpack, in the shape of a coffin, comes to a small post-apocalyptic town in the middle of Utah whose only existence rides on the Colorado River. There is a dam which provides water, food and transportation to the several thousand people who have been congregating in the re-growing town. Many had hoped to fix the hydroelectric station to rebuild their lives, but corruption brews. 

The lone woman stops at one of the bars and gets into a fight with some local gangsters who were mistreating a young girl outside. Causing her to become at odds with the gangs of the town. This is the instance that first roots our heroine, Lisa Cunningham, to save this town and prompted her to grow her Black Market Empire here! 

However, gangs are the least of her worries! Robotic army’s, rebellion militia, mutated monsters, mad cults, competing companies and lustful men ogled over her all the time!! Not to mention the strange events that slowly begin to happen around the girl, Hanna, that she saved. 

Yet there is more to Lisa than good looks alone. She has come back from over 200 years ago and is learning more about what has happened while she was in cryogenic sleep. How will she be able to survive in a hostile world and reach her own goals?

The apartment building was now plain creepy. The eerie silence left me with an uneasy feeling as a waited for the elevator. When it opened, Amy followed me in, which surprised me. (Is she used to this?) The ride felt like it took five minutes. I was constantly on guard. With no security, people could be anywhere and do anything. I lugged the two carts back to my room and heaved a sigh of relief upon entering.
I looked around at my small apartment, where I'd lived for one and a half years. It felt small. With one known human living in the entire apartment building, everything, especially myself, felt small. I grabbed a bag of dog food, cut it open, and put down a bowl of food for Amy. Who knew how long it had been since she last had a full meal. I put the eggs and milk in the fridge and ate a sandwich. After I cleared my mind, I began to think about the future.
The first problem was electricity. If there truly weren't enough people left to run modern infrastructure, then the power would be going out, and soon. It was honestly a miracle that it was still. The only way I could make electricity (easily) in the future was with a generator. Then I would need gas. Based on the unscathed state of the store I had just been in, it was safe to assume the gas stations would still be alright as well. Fuel does have an expiration date, but that was half a year away if I could store it properly. If stored correctly, Jet fuel would last longer. (Will humanity be able to recover enough that I won't ever have to be without electricity?) After fuel and electricity, outdoor survival equipment was a necessity. Getting out of the city felt like a good choice. Anywhere outside the city would have a lower population density, no matter how many people were killed, unless the city was hit harder than rural areas. A completely dark city would always have corners you couldn't see around. To make the most of the gas, I decided I would carjack a fuel efficient car with a large capacity for the equipment, generator, and tanks of gas. It was also time for me to get a gun. I would grab some hunting rifles along with a few pistols to assist me with hunting in the future. (I really hope there are some people left.)
I'd given up on ever seeing my family, my friends and coworkers again. Everyone seemed to be gone. The thought troubled me, but I pushedm it to the back of my mind. Those thoughts would do nothing but hinder my survival. After thinking for awhile, I realized I forgot something extremely important for my survival list. Medicine. Medicine would likely be invaluable and of high rarity in the future. Ransacking the stores for painkillers, cold medicine, allergy medicine, and any antibiotics or vitals could be extremely useful. I wouldn't know how to use these, but the odds were that someone who could had survived, as long as I wasn't the only one left. 
If enough people were dead, the GPS and internet satellites wouldn't have anyone to update there positions. GPS would be obsolete within a week or two, and satellite internet would be useless by the time the power was out for cell towers. With this in mind, I quickly screenshot maps of the city and the areas and cities surrounding it at various levels of zoom for more detailed road information. I decided to expand this whenever I had the time too. I would have to get some physical maps too Incase something happened to my phone. I decided to buy a few more phones as well. As long as I could charge them, I could transfer data. 
After thinking and planning for quite awhile, I decided I would leave as soon as I ran out of milk and eggs, or as soon as the power went out. On the other hand, it might be better to leave as soon as possible. The longer I waited, the more likely I would be in a city shrouded in darkness. I turned on the TV to our regularly scheduled government broadcast. It was the only channel available. (I wonder if satellite TV still has some channels...) I used the smart feature to watch some videos online and looked out the window. Someone was walking on the street. Without a weapon, I didn't feel safe enough to make contact with them. 
I had lost faith in humanity, and it was likely that Humanity had lost trust in itself.

A mysterious phenomenon ripples through the human race. People are exploding. Not only that, but there seem to be some after effects. It quickly becomes a fight for survival- and a looming mystery.

"To answer the user's query, yes. Any modifications, changes, alterations, additions,  removals... etc. can potentially cause damage to the user's soul. The injury or potential damage varies in different ways; the probability of trauma is unique to each instance of cause. 

For example, the use of a schematics card for information has a potential chance of .003% per schematic to damage the user's soul.

What the f@ck, Core!!?? Why did the system wait tell now to inform me of the f@cking hazards?!! She didn't say anything until I asked directly!! I mean for f@ck sake, I could have royally screwed myself with one click and never known. Did I do something to piss the freakin AI off? She's going to let me virtually drive off a cliff, the whole while she's smiling and waving as I plummet to my demise. 

I was trying to control my raging emotions about finding out the unsavory news. I direct the main points of my anger towards the crazy fembot. 

"Core, why did you not inform me of the problems and hazards related to the apps until now? Does it have to do with your programming? What purpose do you serve if you give me warnings about something bad after I already have done it!!??"(Sirus, stupid autocorrect)

There was a moment of awkward silence before the AI responded to my angry questions.

Alice's primary purpose is to assist the user in navigating, implementing, and controlling user's abilities and available functions of the Dungeon Heart, ICore LX. 

The default setting of Alice was set to control the system or functions retroactively, and answer questions asked by the user related to relevant topics. All relevant information about any items was available to the user in the default setting if inquired. 

A threshold of .001% probability of harm would enable Alice to inquire if the user wished to engage in a potentially dangerous course, thus overriding Alice's safety protocols. Alice was not given authority to question, advise, warn, recommend, coerce, guide, assist... etc. under the default setting other than required safety prompt. Why do I see a loading wheel on my HUD? Does it take this long to process a response? Was it that weird of a request?

Holy f@ck!!! I broke Alice!!! It's like her damn system is crashing. Shit only asked her to be my waifu. I didn't expect her to crash in response. "Everyone may not have noticed my gem hovering in the air, but it's there for a reason. Like I was saying to Cam before everyone got here, something in me has changed. The nobility enjoyed an exalted status in the Vesia Kingdom. They stood above the vast majority of commoners in each single aspect. Even the non-hereditary knights who earned their titles through merits also operated within the Kingdom with impunity.

Wealth, power, status and more became within reach if one acquired a noble rank. As a citizen of the more egalitarian Bright Republic, Ves and the rest of his state simply couldn't wrap their heads around why the Vesians accepted the rigid caste-like division of society.

When the experts spoke about the noble phenomenon, they simply shrugged their shoulders and explained it was a matter of culture. In other words, every citizen of a kingdom state had been brainwashed from birth to accept such a backwards-sounding structure.

After all, with the continued advance of science and technology, the ancient justifications such as the Mandate of Heaven, the Divine Right of Kings, superior bloodlines and other such excuses had been debunked as pure excuses.

The various states set up as feudal monarchies simply couched their privileges in more modern terms. Most of the times, the various kingdoms justified their right to rule by pointing out their investment in terraforming the planets and establishing the colonies.

Once the initial population accepted the rulership structure, it slowly became a given that their state would always be ruled by so-called royals and the aristocracy. Humans possessed the capacity to accept all kinds of absurdities as long as everyone else around them believed them as well.

Right now, the entire battle for the Mech Nursery entered a brief pause at the sudden entrance of the Vesian commander. Ves zoomed in on the projection and studied the mech in more detail.

It was definitely a mech that surpassed the typical premium price point. The abundance of jewels and decorative alloys alone must have cost as much as a Blackbeak, but they only made up a portion of the exterior of this flamboyant-looking mech.

Ves peered at the epaulet on the left shoulder of the mech. It depicted a hand holding aloft a notched sword being shone upon by a single golden star.

"So it's a knight."

That meant the noble certainly earned his knighthood through his own efforts. Ves would have rather faced a baron than a knight, because the latter often turned out to be mediocre descendants of brilliant mech pilots.

"Sir Ravanac!" The Chasseurs broadcasted in the open. Their morale instantly surged while the morale of the defenders plummeted.

This Sir Ravanac calmly stepped forward as if he was approaching a picnic instead of a battle. His mech consisted of a mace-wielding medium melee mech. It carried a heavy two-handed mace that looked heavy enough to crunch the armor of any unmech. Only comechs such as the Blackbeaks appeared to be sturdy enough to withstand a direct hit.

The more Ves studied its design, the more his expression soured. "This mech is too high-class!"

He should have anticipated that the raiding force would be led by a noble who piloted a powerful mech. His machine alone could wipe out every defending mech with ease as long as the rest of the Chasseurs and the Monkeys tied them down.

Ves knew he had to intervene in person. He turned away from the central projectors and moved to exit the command center.

"Tell Melkor to stall the noble as long as he can!"

As he ran through the halls and reached the surface, he stepped on a small but swift floater platform and commanded it to convey him right towards the breach.

The speed of the platform caused the wind to whip against his form, but the floater platform's sophisticated antigrav modules and inertial dampeners allowed him to comfortably remain on his feet.

Even as he travelled to the front, Ves kept his eye on his comm, which projected what happened once the noble reached the battle.

Melkor tried to approach and drag out the fight by engaging in a conversation with the kngiht, but Sir Ravanac did not brook any further delays.


"Enough! Press the attack! Wipe out these Republican dogs and smash this entire factory into pieces!"

The Chasseurs resumed their fight with twice as much vigor now that their noble commander personally took charge.

The mechs from Sanyal-Ablin had almost reached their breaking point, and this sudden push only accelerated their inevitable defeat. Even with the Avatars of Myth backing them up, they wouldn't last very long.

Sir Ravanac's mace-wielding mech entered the fray as well. Melkor quickly decided to command his two knight mech pilots to divert the noble as long as possible.

The two Blackbeaks moved to stall Sir Ravanac's mech. Unlike before where they faced a sluggish heavy mech, Sir Ravanac possessed a much better balance between power, speed and armor. Sir Ravanac's abundant experience also allowed him to maneuver around the chaotic battlefield in a way that prevented the Blackbeaks from pincering it from two different directions.

While the Chasseurs led by their commander almost overran the defenders, the battle at the flanks fared no better for the defenders.

Dietrich, Fadah and the handful of veterans failed to stiffen the backs of their rookie pilots. The quick and agile mechs of the Meandering Monkeys constantly played tricks on the newly recruited Whalers. In every area short of weight class, the mechs of the Whalers fell short compared to the Vesian machines.

"Sorry Ves!" Dietrich sent out as his aerial marksman supported his rookies from a low altitude. If he flew any higher, he risked being shot from the air by the frontline mechs that supported the light mechs from the rear. "We can't get rid of these Vesian light mechs! It's taking all we can to preserve our mechs!"

With no further hope for reinforcements, the Mech Nursery was about to be broken through. Without a cohesive force of mechs to stop the raiding force, the Vesians would easily be able to penetrate past the gates and wreak havoc inside the underground floors.

The various defenses and barriers integrated in the tunnels would only slow down the Vesians up to a point. Only mechs could defeat other mechs. That was the ironclad rule in these kinds of war.

When Ves finally reached the gap in the walls, the Avatars of Myth and the Sanyal-Ablin mechs already started pulling out. The Chasseurs succeeded in pushing through the gap, though they paid for their aggression with the loss of a couple more mechs.

Ves controlled the floater platform and manually controlled its flight path to climb on top of the walls.

At this point, no one paid attention to a single person, but Ves knew this would change very soon.

With one hand, he activated his Full Stealth module, and with his other hand he drew the Amastendira from his pocket, which unfolded into an elegant-looking laser pistol.

Once the Amastendira came online, he dialed its output to the highest setting possible. When facing mechs, he could not skimp out on power.

"I've only got ten shots. I have to make the most of what I have."

At the highest power setting, the Amastendira would only be able to pump out ten high-powered beams before it forcefully entered a lengthy cooldown cycle.

It was a heavy price, but a worthy one as well. The setting was meant to pose a threat to mechs, however slightly.

"With this pistol's maximum output combined with my aim, it's probably futile for me to try and take out Sir Ravanac's mech."

The Amastendira still possessed enough power to threaten a mech clad in compressed armor, but he'd have to be precise enough to hit a weak point. Melkor might be able to pull that off, but Ves held no such confidence.

After weighing the matter back and forth, Ves decided to strike the tightly-packed formation of Chasseurs. Right now, they attempted to press forth through the gap in the walls. This granted Ves with a unique opportunity. No matter where he aimed at, he was guaranteed to hit an enemy mech. His lackluster marksmanship wouldn't be much of a detriment in this target-rich environment.

No, the only thing he had to be careful of was the inevitable retaliation. From the way their ranged mechs quickly trained their fire on Lucky when he flew out of the first heavy mech, Ves expected instant retaliation after he fired the first shot.

One of his hands briefly brushed on his stomach where his trusty old shield generator rested. If his Stealth Augment couldn't save him, he at least trusted the shield generator to protect him long enough to get away.

Now that he entered stealth, he had to move quickly in order to take advantage of its short duration. He commanded the floater platform to climb up high in order to obtain a commanding view of the battle.

Once he became satisfied with his position, he extended the Amastendira and gripped it carefully in a two-handed grip. He carefully took the time to aim his weapon before he unleashed the first shot.

The sheer amount of energy passing through the bubble of stealth caused it to fluctuate. The powerful white-hot laser beam immediately caused the mechs of the Chasseurs to bleat out an alarm as the beam struck the back of a swordsman mech trying to press forward.

The beam vaporized the relatively thin layer of uncompressed armor and continued to burn through to strike the mech's power reactor. The component instantly failed, causing the rest of the mech to shutdown.

Ves quickly adjusted his aim and raked the singular powerful beam from the Amastendira through the rear armor of a bunch more mechs. Although he failed to take down another mech, he did manage to startle the Chasseurs into a momentary halt.

The handful of frontline mechs that supported the main push quickly turned around and bombarded the air where his floater platform previously hovered. However, their response was just a tad bit too slow.

Ves wasn't an idiot. As soon as the first shot subsided, he stomped on the floater platform, causing it to initiate an emergency descent. As the invisible bubble of stealth restored around his form, he barely managed to evade the furious volley of fire flying over his head.

The Chasseurs didn't know what they were dealing with. Ves probably figured they thought they faced some kind of powerful stealth bot. Just as they figured they took down the stealth bot, Ves opened fire yet again from another position.

This time, the powerful beam passed through the rear armor of another mech, but failed to hit anything critical. However, the power behind the beam was so strong that it wrecked a lot of internals, to the point where the strength of the mech suddenly dropped by at least a half.

For the subsequent shots, Ves kept the floater platform moving as he fired the Amastendira. While this severely affected his accuracy, the sheer damage and chaos that ensued from his action successfully turned around the battle.

Only after he shot his eight laser beam did the Chasseurs manage to hit him directly. His shield generator flared up, protecting his body from the explosive shells that detonated against his form. He yelled in pain from the energies bleeding through the near-impenetrable shield. A wash of heat and force flung him away from the floater platform which the Chasseurs quickly shot into pieces.

Ves tentatively managed to regain control over his altitude with the help of his antigrav clothing. With the loss of the floater platform, he wouldn't be able to fly as fast as before, but at the very least he managed to preserve his life. He quickly checked the charge of his shield generator.

Its charge dropped from eighty percent to a dismal forty-seven percent.

"Damnit, I can't afford to get hit another time!"

Even until now, Ves hadn't been able to recharge his ultra-compact shield generator. This piece of wondrous technology was completely beyond his present capacities. He figured that the only way he could recharge the shield generator was to go back to Leemar, something which he wasn't keen to do before he advanced to Journeyman Mech Designer.

"The shield generator is a lifeline. What will Master Olson think if I come back so soon with a depleted charge?"

Ves could only fire two more full-powered beams, but the damage he caused had reserved the entire trend. He managed to fell five mechs and heavily wound a couple more. The Chasseurs completely lost their imposing manner, while the defenders thought that Ves had deployed some secret trump card.

Now, the only variable that mattered was Sir Ravanac. Would the knight insist on pushing forward, or would be finally decide to pull back?

Ves Larkinson lacked the genetic aptitude to become a famed mech pilot. Fighting against his fate, he studied mech design in order to express his love for mechs as a builder instead of a soldier.

When Ves graduated from college, he returned to a new but empty boutique. Left with a small, newly founded mech workshop that his father painstakingly built with a mountain of debt, Ves somehow needs to make ends meet with the bank breathing down his neck.

In the midst of his despair, he found salvation from another legacy his father had left.
