Romance is a very popular genre in Webnovels. The first thing that come to mind when we talk about romance are the CEO novels. Even though we don't want to admit it, they are the mainstream romance stories in the Webnovel website. 

So why do people love romance stories? I hope you find the answer while reading this chapter.

FattyBai: How do we pull in the female readers in if we can't write a romance story? *cry emoticon*

Parasection: No choice but to write yaoi then.

WWFire: We who read these kind of fantasy novels don't live our lives correctly pal.

Parasection: how does one even write romance? I don't know where to begin with that genre.

FattyBai: I'm a simple guy, I see plot and I drown it in martial arts and manly stuff. Of course, I don't know what feelings are. Can you eat them to increase your cultivation base? *think smart emoticon*

Parasection: I've never experienced romance so i'd fail the moment i'd attempt a story like that.

Zehell2218: Actually, I like to write fighting scene but without romance my reader will kill me. So...yeah I tag it as romance! *joy emoticon*

Parasection: Fight scenes are fun to write.

FattyBai: I'm trying to break through into the "Immortal lonely sperg" phase~

Elyon knew that "Romance" is not his strong point. He writes a fantasy story with romance, but he can't tell if the romance will be able to attract female readers. Out of curiosity, he asked some of his fellow authors the question "Why do you read romance stories?"

Here are their answers…

Kyosei: Because I am single. 

Reili: To fill my empty void of a love life.

Minrei: Because romance let you feel what is to be loved, plus it is universal you dont need to learn magic or cultivation in order to read.

Bajj: Due to lack of romance irl.

Murakami: I read because I enjoy the friction and conflict between the FL and ML. The insistence vs resistance is naisu.

Qin: I reads romance only for ideas and info.

VlassisBehrakis: I don't read romance novels.

[A/N: Oof I asked the wrong person.]

Elyon then  ̶a̶m̶b̶u̶s̶h̶e̶d̶ asked some readers about their opinion about romance novels.

Yin: I read romance novels because I want that kind of drama to happen to me in real life. But I know it will never happen haha.

A Certain Irresistible Meowlin: I wonder why? And I do read romance novels. Though the chance of me dropping them is also the highest out of all the genres. Every so often I come across a scene that makes me just want to squeal and fangirl.

Elyon decided to dig deeper and asked a few of his senior "romance authors" some questions about their reason for writing romance stories.

The first question is… Why did you choose to write Romance Stories?

Anjeeriku: I'm comfortable writing romance stories compared to other genres. I'm a helpless romantic person and I like novels that can invoke other people's feelings.

Bajj: First of all, I like reading romance story. It was the reason why I read books before and reading other genres comes after. All in all, due to these romance fiction books, I got the opportunity to read more great books with different genre.

MishaK: That's what I read, so write that too.

Zehell2218: Because as reader, I want to read romance novel so when I write, I write romance since my motto is I write what I want to read.

Ikazainudin: The easiest genre. Everyone can relate.

End_of_Era: It wasn't a full on Romance, it was slice of life with romance which I feel was necessary with progression of the characters.

The second question… When you were making your ML and FL, did you imagine yourself as the lead of your story at any given point in time?

Anjeeriku: I would be a liar if I said no. There were instances that I'd put myself in my FL's shoes. Whenever that happens, my writing feels more passionate and truthful that sometimes it was hard to know where my fl starts and where I end. 

Shen Yi, LMD's ML was based on a person I've lost, The One That Got Away so it was sometimes hard not to self-insert whenever there were scenes that need to invoke feelings from readers. 

Bajj: I believe that every character the author was making and breathing life into it, a part of him/her is added to its character. But me imagining of being the ML/FL, never. I'm too pure for that. Kek

MishaK: Yes I did but sometimes. Otherwise you can't infuse emotions in your characters. It is important to understand your characters.

Zehell2218: Yes, I imagine myself as the lead. Of course, I tweak it a bit, such as in age and appearance. But mostly, the characteristics is similar to me.

Ikazainudin: FL and ML character based on what I want to be irl. Yup. I imagine that will be my love story.

End_of_Era: Yes, my leads had some ocassional self insertion.

The third question… If you were to choose some other genre aside from romance, what would you pick?

Anjeeriku: Fantasy. I always look up to those authors who can write fantasy stories/novels well. I believe writing a fantasy novel is harder than writing romance.

Bajj: Horror/thriller/Action. Read GGGB godamnit! [Good Girl Gone Bad]

MishaK: I am writing a Fantasy romance aside from regular vanilla romance *smile emoticon*

Zehell2218: Fantasy, magical realism, fan fiction.

Ikazainudin: Psychological/horror and maybe children story.

End_of_Era: The new genre I'm writing is fantasy/violent .

The fourth and final question… If you were to give a message to your beloved readers, what would it be?

Anjeeriku: I'm sorry for not being inconsistent with updates. Y'all know I love you, but a little consideration and patience as I face this rough patch in my life would be very much appreciated.

Hello Guys! I hope you enjoyed this chapter of WWCG. Personally, I've read a few CEO novels myself. I also read some FL stories like A Slight Smile Is Devastating (Love O2O), Hidden Marriage, Doomed to be Cannon Fodder, Transmigrator meets Reincarnator, A Mistaken Marriage Match: A Generation of Military Counselor, There Is an Angel in That Church (short story), Eight Treasures Trousseau, Grabbing Your Hand, Dragging you Away, A Mistaken Marriage Match: Record of Washed Grievances…

Ai~ there's a few more that I won't add to the list because it will create a wall of text. Well anyways, the reason why I read these stories is to get an idea on "WHY" the ladies love to read them.

Let's just say that it's a unique way to see a world in the eye of a lady (if you are a man of course). When done properly, the execution of the story can capture the hearts of anyone, even male readers. I believe that no matter what gender you are, as long as you find the story interesting then it doesn't matter whether you are a guy or a gal no?

Perhaps, when I'm not too busy to write my stories, I'll once again pick a romance novel to read. Hopefully, I will find another hidden gem that will bring unexpected surprises to anyone who are lucky enough to find them.

Just not too long ago, when Zhan Se and Wang Tongsheng were talking, Bai Muchuan was still listening attentively.
Why did his facial expression change after looking at his mobile phone for a while?
Quan Shaoteng's doubts were all explained by that novel "Murder The Dream Guy".
"Brother!" He motioned Bai Muchuan to go to the smoking area and handed him a cigarette. "It's so unlike you to get distracted over a woman. It's not your style!"
Such straightforward style of his was somewhat similar to Bai Muchuan.
Bai Muchuan took the cigarette and held it near his nose before throwing it back to him. "Say more nonsense and I'm gonna sew your mouth up!"
However, this threat did not work on Quan Shaoteng.
"Hehe." He just laughed it off and lit the cigarette. Once again, he tempted Bai Muchuan by handing the cigarette toward him and placing it in front of his mouth. The moment Bai Muchuan could not withstand it anymore and finally held it in his mouth, Quan Shaoteng smiled. "That's more like it. Speak. If it's not about women, what is bothering you that your mind suddenly wandered off?"
Bai Muchuan creased his eyebrows.
In Xiang Wan's latest update of "Murder The Dream Guy", besides demonizing Detective Fang Yelan in her story, she also wrote about how the case would be, going forward.
She wrote: Ah Sheng must have an underlying reason. He was not considered caught by the police, but rather, he had deliberately planned in a way to let the police arrest him while acting like he was trying to flee. He also confessed to the murder charge directly, but it was all his attempt to protect his lover.
Xiang Wan had told Bai Muchuan about her conjecture that day.
No matter in both fiction and reality, she did not give an answer to this "underlying reason" of Ah Sheng. It had become a baggage to carry over to the next chapter.
"I'm thinking that this may be the direction for a breakthrough."
"Ha! Just like this?" Quan Shaoteng remarked after listening and looked at him in an incredulous manner. "Little Bai, for Pete's sake, when did you become so superstitious?"
Bai Muchuan shot him a chilly glare. "What does this have to do with superstition?"
"This is even more severe than superstition!" Quan Shaoteng inhaled a puff of the cigarette as the corners of his mouth turned upward, forming an alluring smile like a whirlpool of seduction. "Although I don't like reading novels as much as you do, I do know something about it. The genres in the novel are basically transmigration, eastern fantasy, cultivation, horror, and thriller… which one of it is not made up? If you take it too d*mn seriously, your thinking could be influenced by it!"
Bai Muchuan gave him a cold gaze.
"I know, right!"
Quan Shaoteng rolled his eyes. "Worthy to be taught! Not stupid at all."
Bai Muchuan sat down and drank a mouthful of tea. "Can mystery be the same as transmigration and cultivation?" he continued the topic, "you're a layman."
"…" Quan Shaoteng was speechless.
"On top of that, you, the layman, actually wanted to lecture a pro."
"…" Quan Shaoteng made an innocent face and continued to keep his mouth shut.
"Writing a mystery fiction is actually a kind of inference based on the known clues of a case," smiled Bai Muchuan. "Which means it is based on facts. It is also a comprehensive analysis of human nature, social environment, case details, and other factors that possessed realistic referential significance!"

The pretty boy Quan Shaoteng was left standing alone in the wind, downcast, melancholic, and depressed…
Little Bai was implying that a woman was better than him in terms of solving cases!

Wang Tongsheng drooped his head. From the psychological aspect, he was resisting Zhan Se's questions.

Wang Tongsheng lifted his head strongly as she retorted. He seemed in a hurry to defend himself. "Those that you've said, those things… I, I know that!"
Zhan Se smiled. "So do you really know, or do you not know?"
Wang Tongsheng's eyes seemed to have lost its luster as he looked down quietly.
"You're lying!" A voice suddenly came from behind without any emotion. It was Bai Muchuan—whom Wang Tongsheng dreaded the most.
To Wang Tongsheng, the detective who had a pair of cold, frosty eyes seemed to be able to see through one's heart.
Wang Tongsheng did not dare to look him in the eye. His heart was putting up a fierce struggle. The attempt to resist was pushed to the edge of the cliff again, and as a result, he became even more agitated. "I did not lie! Detective Bai, I'm really not lying."
Bai Muchuan sat beside Zhan Se, nodded at her, and threw Wang Tongsheng a question. 
"You deliberately followed Xiang Wan and let her notice your presence which, in turn, led the police to arrest you, then you lied and pleaded guilty of the murder. Who are you protecting?"
"I didn't!" Wang Tongsheng shook his head and still wanted to argue. However, his voice sounded a lot weaker. "I killed him. That's right, I killed him. There's no need to ask again. I've already pleaded guilty, is that not enough?"
Repeated questioning by different officers was originally a test of a person's will.
Even if Wang Tongsheng had a strong will, he might not be able to handle the questioning. Moreover, he was not someone who had a strong will to begin with.
The desperate cries of Wang Tongsheng entirely exposed his weak mentality.

Translator Review:
This is a novel encompassed with mystery, ethics, family ties, and romance. Of course, the highlights of this book are the murder cases. 
Although it’s a modern setup where none of the characters have a system or any other cheats, the Author managed to delight me with her writing, creative plots and a good pace without dragging her story. 
I marvel at the way the Author links up the clues and plot to explain the individual cases as well as paving the way to unravel the huge conspiracy behind the individual murders. Romantic plots are light-hearted so readers could take a breather from the plots of gruesome murders.

This was it. Today was the day.


For once, I was already in my office, sitting at my desk, when Ms. Kang came in. If she was surprised, she didn't let it show. Maybe she expected it, considering what we were here for today.


"How did it go with the thriller?" I asked, fiddling with my tablet.


"The introduction went quite well," said Ms. Kang. "The body was found a week ago at a certain cemetery in Tokyo, and the protagonist reacted just as planned."


"And?"


"No further developments yet, but it's been a week," Ms. Kang continued. "If she doesn't do something this week, then I'll consider the thriller storyline a failure."


"Let's hope for both our sakes that the protagonist is as interesting as you thought she would be," I said, standing up. Ms. Kang nodded curtly.


I walked over to the center of the room, and took off my shirt, revealing a body marked with tattoos. The black markings stood out against my white skin. I noted Ms. Kang's eyes going wide, and couldn't help but grin.


I closed my eyes, summoning my magic. I could feel it pulsing as I directed my magic outwards, forcing it into the shapes I had imprinted onto my body. It flowed smoothly into the ink, making it glow red. I let the magic settle, running through the shapes, learning its purpose.


I opened my eyes, and looked over to Ms. Kang. She seemed entranced by the entire thing, allowing her cool facade to slip a little. I grinned.


"Let's begin."

Irade (ear-Ah-deh)


March 1, 6:04 am, Beijing, China.


Ding!


'Oh, level up,' thought Irade absentmindedly as she stirred from her sleep. Then she realized that made no sense.


She blinked in confusion and rubbed her eyes. Maybe it was a holdover from her dream. She remembered vaguely that it had something to do with gaming, but that might have just been the afterglow from yesterday's finals. It had been a hard won battle...


Nope. It was still there.


On the top corner of her vision, a small bar with the English letters HP written underneath it. Inside the bar were Arabic numerals reading 10/10, and above it was an Arabic script she could not read, with the Lv. 1 written in English next to it. Then, in the lower right corner of her vision was a flashing red exclamation point. No matter which way she looked, or how much she rubbed her eyes, they would not disappear.


'Maybe I should lay off the videogames for a while,' she thought, getting out of bed.


Irade's room was small, but neat. Then again, it was only neat because she didn't really have anything to display. A small bed, with a bedside table and clock on it, and a wardrobe and mirror on the other side of the room. She had a little window above the bedside table that looked over the city below, but it was too high for her to see out of without something to stand on.


At the very least, it provided some good light in the morning.


She got dressed in her uniform, – a traditional blazer and tartan skirt – brushed her teeth and face, and walked through the apartment into the kitchen.


"Ah, Zhang Wei, come quickly while it's- oh."


A middle aged woman stood behind a table, clicking her tongue at Irade. She was dressed to the nines; in a flamboyant red dress with matching heels, with enough make up caked on her face to make a mime look subtle.


Irade stared at the woman for a moment, wondering if she should rub her eyes again. Then before she could get scolded, she bowed to the woman respectfully, who in turn clicked her tongue.


"Your tie isn't straight, do it again," she said. Irade immediately undid her tie.


"Not here!" she said. "Take your food and go!"


Irade's eyes immediately went to the table; it was loaded with all sorts of food. She looked around until she found it, on the counter near the fridge. A small plastic bag, which she knew was full of leftovers. The lady had taken it out in advance. That was nicer than usual of her.


"Hurry up and go, you'll be late for your bus!" the woman hissed.


"Bus?" said a young, male voice.


The woman's demeanor instantly changed as she saw a boy, no older than ten, walk into the kitchen, still in his pyjamas.


"Zhang Wei!" she cried, as if she hadn't seen the boy in years. Irade couldn't help but roll her eyes as she rushed out of the room with her food. Cold dumplings, bought from the stall outside the internet cafe on her way back from home yesterday.


Irade made sure to have her jacket on tight while she took the elevator down, then opened the bag of food once she got out. The smog wasn't too bad today, so she forwent the mask.


Beijing wasn't too cool this time of year, but neither was it warm. Irade felt her fingers slowly freezing as she ate her dumplings on her way to the bus stop. She expertly dodged the people around her,  used to the morning business.


Soon, she reached her stop, and sat down at the waiting area next to the old lady that smelled of tobacco, and the young office-worker that pretended to look at his phone while ogling her. In the past, he had tried to make conversation with her when they were alone.


"Your Chinese is really good!" he said once.


"I'm Uyghur," she had replied.


Ever since, he hadn't attempted to talk to her, which suited Irade fine. She didn't mind the sneaky looks, as long as he didn't try to touch or talk her.


It's not like she could actually do anything about it.


She ate in silence, finishing before the bus came and doing her tie up once she got onto her seat.


On the trip to school, she looked around the bus. Old lady sat at the back, office-worker at the front on his phone, and there was the pregnant lady who had started taking this bus to the hospital a few months ago. She was coming along quite well it seemed, as she looked tired, but happy.


Above them all were their names, with Lv. 0 next to them.


'Feng Guo,' she noted the name of the pervert, before looking out the window. Usually, she liked watching the people go about their lives as she made her way to school, the roar of the bus' engine somewhat comforting. Today, however...


That blinking exclamation point at the corner of her vision was getting annoying. It didn't seem to be a hunger meter or anything, as it was still there after eating breakfast. She wondered how she could open it.


As soon as the thought of opening it crossed her mind, a message appeared.


[Congratulations, you have Leveled Up!]


[HUD unlocked!]


[Daily Tasks unlocked!]


[Stat Points rewarded!]


Irade blinked as the lines of dialogue popped up. Miraculously, they were all in Chinese, instead of English like she was expecting. She read it all carefully, brow creasing with each line.


Stat Points? Daily Tasks?


What did that all mean?


Well, the HUD was probably just this whole...vision thing that was happening. But level up? Everyone else was at level 0, but it did show that she was level 1. How did that happen? What did she do to level up?


That probably wasn't the best question to ask right now. A better question would be to find out what her stats and Daily Tasks were.


Irade frowned, fighting the urge to swipe the image in front of her. That would definitely be a weird thing to do in public.


How had she opened the message before? She had thought about 'opening' it...so maybe, to open her stats screen she should-


And there it is. Stats screen.


[HP: 10/10]


[Strength: 4]


[Speed: 9]


[Intelligence: 10]


[Agility: 5]


[MP: 20/20]


MP? She had Mana Point, aka Mana, aka Magic? Did that mean she could use magic? For the first time since that morning, Irade felt a twinge of excitement about this strange impediment to her vision, but she quickly quashed them. No, she shouldn't get too excited.


First of all, what the hell was this? Level up? Stats? What was all these game-like terms invading the real world like this? Sure, there were stories about ordinary people getting game-like cheats in real life, but they were all stories. Fiction. In the real world, if something like this happened, it would be more likely to be some sort of mental illness manifesting.


That's right. Irade calmed herself down. There was no way this was real. It was probably just her mind's way to cope with stress. School was getting rather tough lately. This was just a way to deal with stress, nothing at all. It would be better if she did not interact with the delusion any more; better to let the delusion go.


As such, she ignored it as she got off the bus and started her school day.


Her school was a decently-sized building, though it only had six stories. That said, the ceiling was quite high for each floor. In turn, that gave it large windows, making practically everything inside visible. Irade thought it looked like one of those modern dollhouses, where you could see the insides without opening it up.


She went by her day as usual, keeping her head down and focusing on anything but studying. She managed to get until lunch before thinking about the HUD again.


As usual, she sat in the cafeteria alone, eating her lunch, when a boy suddenly sat next to her. Irade narrowed her eyes. What the hell was going on? There were literally dozens of other empty tables he could have sat down at. Why this one?


"Irade, right?" he asked.


Irade nodded, mouth full of noodles. She noticed his name on the HUD: Fan Mo.


"I've noticed you around for a while now," he started, which made Irade narrow her eyes. How? When? She was never in school if she could help it. Where would he have noticed her?


The only place Irade hung out was the internet cafe near the food district. But she never noticed him there, ever. And according to her stats – not that they were real – her perception was her best trait.


"Do you want to go out with me?" he blurted out, causing Irade to choke on her noodles. Instead of helping her however, he simply burst out into laughter.


It was only after she coughed up her noodles did she notice the other students recording the whole reaction on their phones. Her ears burned with embarrassment as she stood up.


"No thank you!" she yelled, causing everyone to laugh harder. She rushed to the bathroom before she could make an even bigger fool of herself.


Stupid. Why had she even said anything? He was obviously asking her out as a joke in front of his friends.


Part of her, however, was simply bewildered that this was even happening. Sure, she had heard from other people that this sort of bullying happened, and it was always shown in dramas and novels, but Irade never actually expected it to happen in real life.


Then again, she never expected to suddenly gain a game-like cheat ability in real life either. Not that it was much of a cheat. It was just a HUD, with her lack of stats on display for everyone. She didn't even have any skills.


At the thought of 'skills,' another, glass-like square popped up.


[Skills: Flight: Lv. 0]


She stared at it for a second. Seriously? A Skill? Flight?


From the Skill name, it sounded a little too good to be true. If only there was something like a description she could read...


Ah. Description.


[Flight: Float and move around in the air at will. Duration lasts 1 MP per second]


Well. That seems to check out. Not that she could do anything with...


Wait a second.


A plan crystallized in her mind, but still she hesitated. Could she really trust the HUD? What if it really was all a delusion? Would there be any way for her to check-


Wait. Of course there was.


The HUD said his name was Fan Mo, right? She had never met him, never seen him before. So if she could just get a hold of she school yearbook, look up Fan Mo…


That would mean her HUD is real, and that it isn't something her mind is making up to deal with her stress.


All she needed was a yearbook.


If only she had a yearbook.


Or a friend who would lend her a yearbook.


She glanced at her phone for the time, and washed her face. Still some time before class. Maybe if she asked one of the teachers they could lend her one?


'It couldn't hurt to try,' she thought, leaving the bathroom.

"This world is truly...boring."

The Mage King, overthrown and killed by his own people, escaped via one last spell. Reincarnated in the body of a weak baby, he sets off to conquer the world once more.
