Prolog

The boys strained their ears as they heard heavy footsteps coming down the basement stairs. Whoever had captured them was coming closer. A moment later, a pudgy man with long red hair and side-burns appeared. He was wearing a long black coat over a Luke Skywalker-esque shirt and a weapons belt reminiscent of Han Solo. He approached the boys with a satisfied smirk and orange cheese powder on his face. "Welcome Bat-boys to the Basement of Wonder! The ultimate hide out of Control Freak!" he declared rather theatrically.

Robin cast Control Freak a bacon-searing glare. Red Hood snorted. Red Robin just stood still, keeping his expression carefully blank, and slowly hid the pin he was picking the lock with out of sight. Nightwing failed to suppress a bark of laughter, so he disguised it with a cough.

"Ah, the infamous Couch Potato; your reputation and stench of month old socks precedes you, oh great slug-bed," teased Nightwing.

Control Freak bowed before he realized that he had just been insulted.

"Hey Red Robin, are you familiar with this species?" asked Nightwing, "It's a Controlus Freakus; a subspecies of Couchus Potaticus."

"Drop the humor and phony Latin," said Red Robin without humor, "rule number one of superheroes, if you get caught, don't antagonize your captor."

"I thought that was rule number two. Rule number one is don't get caught in the first place," Robin put in.

"And rule number three is shoot them in the butt if they annoy you by gloating or making flamboyant introductions," said Red Hood darkly. Robin nodded at that one and Control Freak blanched for a second until he remembered that the boys were all chained to the wall.

"I'm standing right here," Control Freak pointed out. He crossed his arms over his chest.

"What do you want with us?" Robin demanded angrily.

"I'm glad you asked, Robin," said Control Freak taking a few steps back. He pressed a button on the remote in his right hand and the room went pitch black. Suddenly, a spotlight appeared over his head and he struck a pose.

"Uh oh, here it comes," muttered Nightwing rolling his eyes.

"He has been planning this for way too long," Red Robin observed.

"Shush, you're ruining the dramatic effect," Control Freak hissed. The boys rolled their eyes but closed their mouths. "Welcome to Control Freak's Ultimate Star Wars Survival challenge. Allow me to introduce the players; Nightwing, the acrobat of wonder. Red Hood, a marksman without equal. Red Robin, the boy genius. And Robin, the son of Batman." Control Freak pushed another button on his remote, and a beam of white light hit the boys one at a time. They disappeared from the bonds holding them to the basement wall. Seconds later, they found themselves standing on a meatal landing platform on a strange metallic planet. Coruscant, Nightwing realized.

Nightwing looked down at his clothes. He was no longer wearing his superhero costume and mask, but rather a black Jedi tunic. Where his eskrima sticks had been, there were two lightsabers. He removed one of them from his belt and a bright blue blade shone forth. He touched the tip of the blade to the deck under his feet. Metal melted. This was a real lightsaber. He had never for a moment believed that he would very see a real lightsaber that worked the way it did in the movies.

Beside him, Damien was also wearing Jedi robes. A little braid of black hair fell over his right shoulder. Damien too was inspecting his lightsaber. The emerald blade was beautiful and almost hypnotizing. On the other side of Damien, Tim was wearing soft expensive looking robes. A red velvet cloak draped over his matching embroidered jacket and black trousers. He tugged at the collar uncomfortably. Jason, who was more or less still dressed like Red Hood, was laughing at the outfit.

"Stop laughing," snapped Tim. "What happen to us? Where are we?"

"I think we're on Coruscant," said Dick gazing around the city again.

"You are indeed," said Control Freak. He appeared before them in a shimmering blue hologram. "Now allow me to explain my Star Wars Survival challenge. I have beamed you into Star Wars: Episode III with my newly developed TV Dimension Ray."

"You dirty son of a…" Jason began.

"Ah, ah, ah. You'll want to hear this," said Control Freak smugly. "In this dimension of TV, everything is real. Which means you are real characters in the story and are in real danger. Nightwing, you are a Jedi Knight. Red Hood, you are a bounty hunter. Red Robin, you are a senate aid to Bail Organa. And Robin, you are a Jedi youngling. Play along. To return to our reality, you must survive the story to the end. So, have fun."

"But this is the episode where everyone dies!" said Dick.

"Well try not to. If you die here, you die in our reality too."

Dick turned to his brothers. "I think the only way we all survive this, is to change the story."

"How do we change it?" asked Tim.

"We have to keep Anakin from turning to the dark side. We can't let him make that first step by killing Dooku. We can nip this story in the bud so to speak," Dick explained. They nodded. If Darth Vader was never born, maybe they could all pull through this. Hiding, was not an option because the characters they had been assigned to play, already had targets painted on their backs. And besides, hiding wasn't in their nature.

"God luck boys and play along." With that, Control Freak's hologram disappeared, and he himself sat back on the couch to watch a once in a lifetime performance for an audience of one.

Morning went as usual - calm. I had a breakfast and waited for Hermione to go on lessons.
On the lesson of flying, I achieved expected results. Broom answered my call properly after a fifth call. Magical talent improved 4 times works miracles (sarcasm).
Accident that happened later on the lesson wasn't as dramatic as shown in a film. Neville dropped, broke wrist and teacher took him for treatment. Malfoy thought he is undefeated, so he taunted Potter by taking 'Remembrall' and tried to show off his skills on broom, but Potter was natural at flying. Hermione tried to talk him out of this, but I stopped her and said that he can do it.
Honestly, I thought artifact was quite useless and felt its usage is more of a trinket with function. However, that is a gift from family and taking it from such a nice kid like Longbottom, is kind of cruel. 
Anyway, halfway through their "broom duel" he got scared by Harry's talent and thrown the 'Remembrall', which Harry caught. Situation was noticed by McGonagall, who then took him away somewhere. 
Hermione was very anxious and thought he will get into trouble or will bring trouble to Gryffindor and looked accusingly at me.
"He won't get us or himself into any trouble and won't be expelled. Don't worry."
"How can you be so sure?" She asked still uncertain.
"I just know, so trust me."
When teacher returned, we all tried flying on a broom and I got a new skill.

Lessons continued this day and as usual after dinner I went to library, but Granger went to talk with protagonist and redhead. I decided to go without her today, because she apparently turned her bossy mode on and started lecturing them. 
Due to me staying in library till late these days I was usually coming back barely before curfew at 10. I had 3 books from library in my bag and was contemplating problem of 'Using' books.
I was still unsure if I should take them to my inventory. It is a fast way to earn experience and I can always load if something happens, but at the same time I don't want to use them before I get high skill levels, because leveling gets harder every day. 
Am I just too careful? There are thousands of books and I finished reading around 7 books from library already. Even if I use them, so what? Then it is decided, this weekend I will try 'Use' on them and get some free skill levels. 
It's a shame that this week I had no time on reading library books due to me being busy with memorizing and studying current subjects, especially potions and history. 
But with new abilities, I acquired yesterday it will become easier to memorize books and I can return to grinding knowledge and skills in library. Never thought I will become grinding nerd, he-he. 
Anyway, I reached our dormitory a bit before curfew this time and decided to rest a little bit, because I had no desire to sleep yet. I went to fireplace and sat on a floor near it so that my back was facing the wall connected to fireplace and fire was lighting up space before me. It was a tad bit hot, but I was okay with it. 
I faked taking a book from my bag and started reading. Thanks to the fact that light from fire was dropping from behind right onto the book it wasn't too uncomfortable to read it. 
Honestly though, I was not trying to study it, just to rest a little bit while having a light read. Days were tiresome and quiet atmosphere like this helped me concentrate and think. Room was dark except for waning fire in the fireplace and it gave me that calming feeling that I needed.
Soon, I stopped reading and just looked at the window to see darkened sky. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the moment. Fire went out, apparently coal burned out. However, embers were still glowing in the darkness of the common room.
However, soon I started contemplating about life and thinking about many things, but especially about why I was rushing so much with gaining power and knowledge. There was no immediate threat, then why am I that hellbent on doing so much? Maybe it is just my mindset, when I can't relax until I am 100% assured of personal safety. 
Then there was also Potter and Voldemort. I know there is still a lot of time till he will revive, but I am still scared. I have saves and can load to any moment in time, but the problem is, 'Avada' will one shot me without a chance to even think about 'Loading'. 
And in second year already, there will be a giant snake that can kill with a look. And I have only a year until meeting with such a beast. I am happy to live, and I know that this a second chance, so I can't mess up. Maybe that is why I struggle to the best of my abilities? 
And another thing was, why me? I always want to ask system, but I am a little bit anxious to hear the answer. Or maybe system doesn't know as well. 
Or maybe, I am constantly busing myself just to run away from my problems and to have no time to even consider them, like what I am doing now.
*Sigh*
I know that all these thoughts are useless, because I like what I'm doing and that what matters. It is a waste of time - thinking about why's and if's. However, I just can't stop myself sometimes. 
I have no idea how long I was sitting here resting and thinking, but at some point in time I heard some noise coming from the stairs into boys dormitory and saw Potter and Weasley going somewhere in their bathrobes.
'Are they going somewhere? In the night? Wait a sec… Isn't it the night when they discover a dog? I completely forgot about that, damn.'
Just as I wanted to get up, Hermione came into the room and started berating boys. By the way, she looked cute in pink. 
Hermione was still trying to make them stay and forgo some duel to not lose points to Gryffindor. They were on their way to exit the common room and I decided not to follow them.
Potter looked a little bit annoyed because of the current situation, so he ignored Granger and told Ron to go. He pushed the portrait to started exiting, but she followed them and went away.
'Hm…' 
Seems like story started moving in the direction it was meant to be. Better not to intrude now. I will come into the story around the middle probably. Right now, I don't want to mess up the story, because this moment is the starting point of whole plot and basis for Potter's suspicions about what Fluffy guards.'
Moreover, not like I can do much in their situation. However, now is a perfect opportunity to introduce myself to their group. I will just need to pretend that I couldn't fall asleep and was reading here.
But first, I will go change into my bathrobe.
I got into my room and changed my clothes. Left the schoolbag there, took one book and went to read into common room. I switched coal in fireplace and used my only learned spell so far, Incendio to light it up, sat in my previous place and started reading. 
It seems like some action going to happen soon.

Met truck-kun. Obviously died. Nobody survives after fateful meeting with him.
Afterwards, I was reborn in the different world with the system from my favorite game! However, there was a catch - I had negligible amount of knowledge about this universe.

"Oh cmon... System, do you really need do this every time? Now... what will I do?" 
[Pick a race]

On the way to the Sect Head's Mansion, Jam kept trying to get answers from Rina, but she just kept walking and ignoring Jam until they reached their destination. Then, they were before the Sect Head once again.

"Mhmm... What's wrong with her?" The Sect Head noticed Rina's odd composure and wanted to know what happened. She would never imagine the ridiculousness of their upcoming conversation.

"I don't know. After she uninvitedly entered my room… look this might seem weird without context, so I'll start the story from the beginning. Yesterday, I washed my clothes, and as you know I came to the academy without any more pairs. So, while I was waiting for the clothes to dry, I began cultivating. I lost myself in cultivation and when I woke up she in front of me. Anyways, to answer your question, I think she got shocked because I asked her why people wear clothes." This time, before Jam even began to talk, he showed the proper etiquette of greeting his senior with a bow and a Daoist greeting. It didn't change the nonsensical nature of his words though...

"Mhmm… You say you don't know why people wear clothes?" The Sect Head was somewhat taken aback by this stupid question. She had the same internal questions Rina had back when Jam asked her why people wear clothes.

"Yeah. I don't get it. Humans are like the only animals that wear clothes… Why is that? You probably know right? I mean you are a mighty Sage. With your insights into the Dao you should know why people wear clothes right?" 

Jam thought about this issue throughout his journey from his house to the Sect Head's Mansion. He reasoned that this matter was one about the nature of human beings, and that only those with high enough insights into the Dao would understand this profound mystery. After all, all Daos eventually converge into one, encompassing all types of knowledge. Once someone progressed far enough into their Dao they would be able to derive any and all forms of knowledge from their understanding of the Dao.

The Sect Head didn't know where to laugh or be offended. Some idiot just asked her if she knew why people wore clothes based on her insights into the Dao. She wanted to laugh at this retarded question, but at the same time, she saw that Jam really believed in his theory.

"Kid, people wear clothes to not be indecent. Would you dare run around the academy in your birthday suit for all to see?" The Sect Head thought that this simple question would let Jam intuitively understand the answer to his problem.

"How is someone indecent if they don't wear clothes? And why should I care if people see me naked?"

Rina: "..."

Sect Head: "..."

Jam: "Mhmm?" Jam waited for a while, and seeing that they were not responding, he made a questioning sound as if to startle them up from their pondering.

Sect Head: "You really don't know?" At this point the Sect Head was starting to believe the really existed a ten year old boy who lived without making contact with other humans in his life.

"Nope, I don't get it."

"Alright then, do you at least know the differences between boys and girls?" The Sect Head thought that Jam would at least know this bit of information.

"Yeah that's obvious; girls are small and nice to look at, while boys are big and uhh… they're not ugly but I'd rather not stare at one." Jam felt proud of his answer. He had eyes, so his answer should be correct.

'There's no way.' Both Rina and the Sect Head thought at the same time.

"Are those the only differences you know of?" The Sect Head really wanted confirmation now. However, the thought of a ten year old boy not knowing this, up until now, universally understood common-sense question, made her unintentionally show a humored smile.

"Pretty much." Jam oblivious to their internal laughing, kept his tone positive, feeling that he was correct.

"You do know that girls and boys have different body parts right?"

"What?" Jam was genuinely surprised.

"Boy and girls have different body parts." The Sect Head was on the brink of giving herself a face palm. 'Am I really having this conversation with a ten year old?'

"Oh really? From what I can see while girls have a nicer shape, and their face are more aesthetically pleasing, they don't have anything weird that I know of. Men and women have the same number of legs and arms, they both have one head, with two eyes, a nose, two ears, and a mouth. Where are they different?" Jam once again, retorted, in what he thought to be a perfect response.

"Their crotches are different." This mighty Sage, actually spoke such words.

"Mhmm?" The only female Jam has interacted with in his life is Woody and even when they lived together Jam never saw her naked before, so after thinking about it, it seemed like it was possible for men and women to have different body parts.

"I've never seen a girl's crotch so I don't no if it's true, but for the sake of knowledge, even if girls and boys have different crotches, what spooky thing do girls have in their crotches for it to cause all of humanity to wear clothes? To my knowledge, the only thing on my crotch is a "thingy" which filters out my bodies waste." 

While Jam knew how to read, his vocabulary was a bit basic, to the point of not knowing what the official name for "thingy" was. Remember, he never went to school, and pretty much only researched about cultivation.

"Um.. this conversation is getting awkward, so after I give you your things, how about you go to the library and study human anatomy." The Sect Head knew that she would, at this rate eventually be discussing the birds and the bees with Jam, and she was not having it!

"You're giving me things? Cool." Jam was surprised to learn that the Sect Head had called him over to give him things.

"Here you go." Then the Sect Head threw a ring at Jam.

"Thanks… I guess?" Jam obviously had no idea why he was given a ring.

"That's a Space Ring, you can store anything in it. I have already added some basic things like food, water, and… your uniforms. Feel free to use the rest of the space for whatever you want. Also before you leave, You should know that if you don't reach the next Realm of cultivation within the next ten years, you will be expelled.

Furthermore, because of your untimely arrival you won't be able to attend classes until next semester, which starts in around a month, at the end of August."

Jam didn't really care about being expelled, since he was rapidly progressing in cultivation. Jam was more interested in the space ring, so he used his energy to operate the Space Ring and was surprised by its size; within the Space Ring, Jam had 100 cubic meters of space.

The Sect Head still a bit bothered by her conversation with Jam. She dismissed him, and he left the Mansion with Rina.

"Hey you're a girl right? What's awkward about talking about girls crotches?" Jam still hadn't forgotten to ask her before leaving, in an effort to save him some time from having to read in the library.

"..."

Rina was still unresponsive, so Jam just apologized for his curses back in his house, gave his farewell to Rina, and headed towards the library. He had to figure this mystery out sooner, rather than later.

At the library, Jam met with the same receptionist from his last time visiting, and asked where he could find books about human anatomy. The receptionist was intrigued by Jam's request and after giving him directions, she asked him why he wanted to study human anatomy.

Jam recounted his story from the beginning to the receptionist, and she kept giving him weird looks. Jam gave his thanks to the receptionist, for telling him where to get the books, and then searched for them. Jam figured that girls were uncomfortable when asked to talk about the subject of their crotches, so he might as well not waste time asking the receptionist for additional information.

He found the books he was looking for and was interested even before he reached the section for female anatomy. This was the first time that Jam saw all the internal organs of the body, so he legitimately researched the topic. He was amazed at how marvelous the human body was, and even more amazed at the people who made these discoveries.

Eventually, he got to the section for female anatomy and sure enough, the female body was different at the crotch. Jam was expecting to see some spooky imagery, but was instead surprised when he saw there was literally nothing there.

"What the fuck? Why wouldn't they just tell me they have different genitals?" After reading the earlier sections of the book, Jam found out the scientific term for "thingy."

Even after finishing the book, Jam still didn't understand why the subject of genitals were taboo. The book of human anatomy was very detailed, and while the functions of genital were a bit spooky, Jam didn't think conception and birth were inherently bad in nature. 

He did learn a bunch of other things though, which would be helpful to him. For example, now he knew where all the vitals where located in the body. In the future, should he ever need to fight another human, he would know where to aim.

He returned to the receptionist and asked her if she could help with his situation. She recommended a couple of books of history, and social affairs. Even though Jam didn't know how all of this was connected, he went along with her suggestion and read the books.

After reading the books he was recommended, Jam finally understood, more or less, why people found this subject awkward. In any case, Jam felt no shame for his body and he wouldn't let something trivial, like a girl seeing him naked, bother him.

Follow the adventures of a boy named Jam on his journey to gain a purpose. Thrust onto the world of cultivation because of the silly encouragement of his foster grandmother and his ridiculously one-track-minded self, Jam's adventure is bound to be full of action, comedy, and self discovery. Hopefully, his stupidity will be cured before it affects his life too badly.

"Should we go? Ginny's down there!" It was Harry's voice.
Ah, I must be having a vision of the altered future.
Alex could see everything clearly now. It was Ron and Harry standing over the open entrance to the chamber in Myrtle's bathroom.
Ron spoke, "You remember what Alex said, a Basilisk is down there!"
"Yeah, but she said I defeated it. We can't wait anymore Ginny is down there, dying!"
Ron hesitated.
Shit.
A look of horror dawned on Alex's face as she realized what her reveal caused. Before they didn't truly know about the basilisk. They had a clue from Hermione but what if Alex's involvement changed Hermione's curiosity and ability to find out the truth. The Harry Potter story plot is fragile and based on a series of delicate accidents. Alex may have revealed the ending but the courage to fight along the journey slacked because they knew how it would end. They found out that everything turned out fine and they were heroes. They must have figured that the ending was set in stone so they put no real effort into their search.
Ron looked guilty. But he still hesitated, he muttered harshly under his breath, "Bloody basilisk down there!"
Harry finally looked determined, he gave Ron one last pleading look. They seemed to share the same thought because Harry jumped in and right on his tail was Ron.
Alex's vision swirled and changed. She was watching Harry and Ron crying over a corpse. Ginny's corpse. She lay dead at their feet. Harry looked over to the journal on his left and a young Tom Riddle who was laughing at them. Harry stood and ran towards the dead basilisk. He grabbed a tooth and stabbed the journal. Just like the story should be. Except, because of the boy's hesitation. Because of Alex telling them the truth. Ginny was now dead. Alex felt tears slide down her cheeks and she closed her eyes.
She opened them to find herself in her dorm. Her hair was sticking to the sides of her face with sweat. She sat up and saw the sun just barely over the horizon.
"What cowards. I've really fucked the timeline, and this time it cost Ginny's life."
Alex noticed her roommates were still asleep so she decided to take her shower before they could interrupt her, or run away in fear.
After taking a shower she put on her pants and tucked in her shirt. She left her new Slytherin loose around her neck. She wouldn't get in trouble but a strict teacher would yell at her to tighten it back in her old world. Thinking back to her old life she had a new resolve. She had to save every life she could possibly save, so people wouldn't have to suffer painful deaths as she and her brother had.
She grabbed her school bag and walked out of her dorm room. Nobody was in the common room so she didn't have to interact with anyone. She got out into the dungeon hallway.
Alex had a destination. She had a goal now. She was headed towards the Griffindor tower to scold Ron and Harry. She passed a few students who decided that the floor looked more interesting than watching where they were going, so she witnessed some students walking straight into walls.
She passed a first-year Griffindor student with a black eye being supported by two other students with busted lips and red cheeks. Those students ran away from her in fright. There must have been a fight in the common room, she could hear the commotion from outside the painting. Another two students with messed up clothes and black eyes rushed out the painting not even bothering that Alexis entered right after they left.
What she saw surprised her. Her brother standing over another student with Harry Potter holding him back so he couldn't hit the student again. Peter looked furious. Alexis knew the argument must have started over her, otherwise, he wouldn't be so angry.
Nobody noticed her entrance so she hid behind some students watching. The kid on the floor shouted, "You both are bloody cursed! You're evil! You shouldn't even be in Griffindor! You belong in the dungeons with the snakes and that wretched sister of yours!" After he said that Peter broke out of Harry's hold and started beating the boy's face. Alex stepped forward and the students she hid behind coward away from her at the sight of her white hair. She passed Harry and gave him a nod of thanks. He stepped back.
Peter was still beating on the boy until now but Alex placed a hand on his shoulder. Peter immediately stopped. He looked over his shoulder and saw his sister. He stood up and kicked the boy away. Peter and Alex were the same height so when they looked at each other their eyes locked.
'Stop hurting people based on their small words. They can't hurt us.' Peter read my thoughts again. He nodded and fixed his sleeves that he had previously rolled up. Harry handed him his bag and Peter and Ginny left the common room together. I stopped Harry from following him. Naturally, Ron stayed with Harry.
Some students in the common room were waiting for more action but were disappointed when they saw Harry and I get along well. The common room was soon empty.
"Boys, I need to speak with you about a change in the timeline."
At the mention of the timeline, they both stiffened.
"Ginny dies."
"What!" They both yelled at the same time.
"Hear me out," They stopped talking, "You boys knew what was in the chamber this time so you hesitated to jump in. This hesitation was the last bit of time that let Ginny slip away."
"So because we hesitated, Ginny died." Harry was dumbstruck. He couldn't wrap his head around the fact that he hesitated. That wasn't Griffindor of him at all.
Ron looked pale again. The thought of losing his baby sister was unbearable for him. He looked determined to change his sister's fate.
Alex interrupted their thoughts, "I've decided to help you take down the basilisk."
"How? It's not like there's a book for how to fight basilisks. Is there?"
"No there isn't unless you want to count Gilderoy Lockhart's fake books then no. I want to enchant a weapon that will aim for certain parts of the basilisk so I can blind in first. I'm thinking of a bow and a set of arrows. I need to know what weapons you boys think you can handle. So I can make you some suitable equipment."
Harry answered for Ron and himself, "We should both be able to use our wands, thanks though."
"Suit yourselves." I shrugged. It's not like I'm going to let them die, they just won't be much help in the fight.
"That's extremely difficult! You're just a first-year how can you know how to enchant anything?!" Ron seemed unable to believe Alex's claims that she could make a suitable weapon for fighting the basilisk.
"I think you forget who you're talking to Ronald. I'll see you boys, later. Oh, and thank you Harry for trying to help my brother."
"No problem."
I left their common room and headed to the library to look for Hermione. Alex wanted to ask her if she knew any books or a section of the library dedicated to researching different weapon enchantments. Although Grindelwald taught her a lot about enchantments they were most deadly and aimed to kill humans. She needs enchantments to kill a basilisk.
She spotted Hermione at a table surrounded by books on Herbology.
"Hermione."
"Huh? Oh, Alexis. Nice to see you here. Do you need anything? Books?"
"Yes, actually I need to know if there's a book here about enchanting weapons. And if there's anything here about killing a basilisk. I've decided to help you, Harry, and Ron to kill the beast."
"Oh. I was going to research basilisks but when you told us we end up winning I stopped. The section for snake research is over there and right next to it are a few books on weapon and armor enchantment. Have you decided you use an enchanted weapon to kill the snake?"
"Yes. Thank you, Hermione. I'll be going now."
We waved bye to each other and separated. The sections she pointed to were in a dark corner of the library and tinted window was the only source of light. I had an hour to kill before my first class so I sat at the window seat and grabbed a book on how to kill different snakes. There wasn't a mention of how to kill a basilisk, just to avoid getting into contact with them.
I read for the rest of the hour. I left the book on the shelve and headed toward the great hall to get my timetable.

If you're reading this that means you've made it all the way through, to the end of the story! And if you did that, you must have liked it – I would hope that if you thought it royally sucked you would have hit the back button by chapter 2! In any case, thanks for reading, I hope you laughed your ass off. I certainly did while writing this damn thing.

Anyhow, just wanted to let you know that there will certainly be a sequel. I didn't want to write it, since I know it's just an excuse for me to procrastinate from my own works - but I can't NOT write it! It's too bloody funny not to write. I'd go crazy giggling to myself about all the things that could happen if I didn't! So in an effort to preserve what's left of my sanity, Harry Potter and the Slippery Secret (i.e. book 2) has begun. The first chapter has just been uploaded.

Also, I wanted to thank all of my reviewers. As HP and the PSB was my first venture into fan fiction I must say that I was both surprised and delighted with the reviews that were left for me. It's a wild sort of rush to know that someone is actually reading my story!

A note about the story. Personally I think it fits together pretty well and to me, the events that take place make sense. So, for those of you who may have been wondering what I was thinking while compiling the story, this is for you:

Harry doesn't see anything in the Mirror of Erised because he's completely happy. Everything he's ever really wanted - to be accepted (the flamboyant gay thing), to have friends (he now has plenty), to have a home (Hogwarts) – he has. He's pretty independent and accepting of his circumstances so it just didn't seem to fit that he would crave his parents and a traditional family.

Ron doesn't see himself as the Quidditch/Head Boy in the Mirror because he already stands apart from the other Weasleys. Bill's the Head Boy, Charlie's the Quidditch Captain, Percy's the brain, Fred & George are the jokers, Ginny's the girl, and Ron is the one who's hanging out with a Malfoy. The obvious replacement for this hearts desire to stand out would likely be the money issue – Ron should see himself as being very rich. But most of Ron's money woes are built upon the Malfoy teasing in the books. Since Draco doesn't make fun of the Weasleys finances, Ron has little need to feel insecure – especially with someone like Harry around who is handy with a needle and thread and more than accustomed to 'making do.'

Draco and Ron are grudgingly friends. They're 11 and when they meet on the train the only history they have is through family reputation. If I had written this as a fifth year book or something like that - they're friendship might be a huge stretch but I think it fits pretty well for people who have really just met. Both of them want to be friends with Harry which means they have to find a way to get along. Ron and Harry are closer than Harry and Draco which means that it's Draco who more often has to hold his tongue. They meet on the train and compete for the floor during their Quidditch talk but I think the actual friendship begins when Draco makes fun of Hermione after she embarrasses Ron about the smudge on his nose. Ron likes how the Weasley/Malfoy friendship makes him stand out, and Draco likes having people he can actually talk to – being with Crabbe and Goyle sounds really boring to me! And as they're Gryffindors who don't care about the Malfoy name, they're not just sycophants trying to get in with his father. They're both very protective of Harry which helps the friendship along.

I don't think the timing is too far off regarding the Gringotts break-in. Hagrid and Harry spend quite a bit of time at the Dursley house before setting off for Diagon Alley, so they would have reached the bank much later than in the book. I figure the Malfoys are REALLY rich and Draco will have spent ALL DAY being fitted for various robes - so despite the delay at the Dursley house and the Gringott's robbery, they still get to meet in Madam Malkin's (yes, this is a stretch but I really wanted them to meet there!)

Harry is only eleven but he already knows he likes boys - I don't know a ton of gay people but of those I know, they (especially guys) all kind of knew something was up by the time they were 7 or 8, they might not have known they were gay exactly but they know something was a little different, of course it wasn't something they said out loud because they learned very early on not to. And there are always a couple of boys that just like to do the traditionally girlie things - Harry happens to be one of them that happens also to be gay. In any case, this part is allowed to be unbelievable - the whole point of the story was to make him really flamboyantly gay so who cares how it happened?

Being not just gay but really REALLY flamboyantly so in the Dursley household takes guts and a certain strength of character that J.K Rowling's Harry doesn't have. And that's where the main changes to Harry's personality arise. He's pretty damn independent - because he has to be. He couldn't be flamboyant otherwise. He refuses to be anything other than himself - for the same reason, and this leads to him being a bit rebellious (like really liking reading when the Dursleys deny him books). He also has learned to read people pretty well - knowing just how far he can push the Dursleys before he really gets into trouble etc. He won't stand for anyone being treated badly - the way he was at the Dursleys, especially for things they have no control over, especially now that he's in a place where he's accepted. He's no hypocrite.

Hermione gets to be a bit girlier because she's not around two 'boy' boys. Harry's boy enough that he wouldn't annoy her like Lavender and Parvati but girly enough to bring out other aspects of her girly self

As mentioned in the first couple of paragraphs in 'The Letters From No One' Harry played with the girls at old school sometimes thus his access to the Ken doll - I know, Mattel is an American company but Barbie and Ken are very much alive and well, throughout much of the world (I'm not a Barbie fan at all and had quite a bit of fun - ahem - sticking it to Ken).

Draco comes through with the Hermione friendship for a few reasons. 1, he wants to be friends with Harry. I wouldn't imaging that he's ever had proper friends before so losing Harry would be a big one - especially since Crabbe and Goyle have loyalties to Harry as well. Also, spending time being teased about blindly following his father might lead to him opening his eyes a bit. And of course, he's 11, Hermione's a cool chic, and it's fun to get one past Daddy.

As Hagrid says to Harry, they're in a world where people are breeding with giants, werewolves are running around, and most of the men would do anything to jump a Veela (which seem to be kind of vulturelike half the time if I remember book 4 correctly) - so it seems pretty reasonable that being accepting of same sex relationships is the norm. I would imagine that in a society like that way more people would be openly gay - or bi - or would at least dabble with the bi experience. So if Harry openly has a crush on Fred and George or kisses Draco and it turns out none of them are gay - who cares? It would be just like being hit-on by someone you're not attracted to - of the gender you are attracted to. No biggie.

Magnus's excitement didn't last long on his first use of magic. His attempts only worked five times out of ten. While that would have been a remarkable achievement to anyone else in his position, he wasn't knowledgeable in such matters. In the end he could only shrug and take what he got. The night soon passed this way.
The next morning after a quick meal which was turning bland fast, he set about going through the books, hoping to find something useful. Trying to recall further memories only left him with a headache. He poked the books with a stick that he had gotten from outside to check for any obvious curses. His parents always cautioned him about cursed books that were found in the wizarding world. Any book that's worth something has a charm on it, beneficial or often otherwise. Especially books that were found in a cabin owned by a crazy witch in the middle of nowhere. The foreign language didn't make them any less ominous. Yesterday he was careless in his excitement and he only realized his mistake later at night.
He picked the two books he could understand first, "Tales of Beedle the Bard" and "Legends of the Legendary". "Tales of Beedle the Bard" was less abridged than he remembered, but still nothing new that would matter to him. The other book was a collection of stories of various legends from all over the world. It looked to be old and was handwritten rather than printed. There was no mention of the author either. 'The first book is like a staple of the wizarding world, so almost everyone has it. What's so special about the second one though? I don't think that a lunatic witch would love to read stories in the middle of nowhere. Hmm, the first story is about a warrior who fought against the invaders. Pretty standard story, even those muggle books I read have them. The second is of a scholar who found some cure for a plague. The third is of a legendary beast, fourth is some shapeshifter, fifth is of someone who wakes up in another world…' 
A cold sweat took his back as he was reminded of the witch's words when he woke up in that disgusting cauldron. The words seemed to match the stories in the book, though he couldn't recall his captor's words completely. 'Not ominous at all. What could go wrong when you follow a storybook? Bollocks that's what!' Magnus thought in annoyance. His mum would have admonished him at his use of cuss words, but he always thought they were cool when the older boys used them. He felt like the present situation did give him a leeway with some cussing. He paced around the room for a while till his mind settled down. 'I hope I get out of this mess soon,' he hoped.
He went to the stream nearby and took a quick wash and got the water with the pot. He tried the berries this time. The red one was fine while the purple berry made his tongue numb for a few minutes. When he concentrated on them, the red berries had a brighter glow around them while the purple berry had a dark and dull glow. 'So, bright good and dark bad?' he theorized. He decided to avoid the purple one. The meal of berries while unsatisfactory, filled his stomach. He didn't know how to hunt and decided not push his luck with any potential magical creature that might be lurking around. 
With nothing else to do, he went to the bookshelf again and took down the remaining two books. The yellow covered book in pictograms was put to the side. He couldn't make heads or tails of it. The other book in black gave him a sense of familiarity after an intense staring session. 'Ah yes! This is written in Arabic! I did look at the alphabet just before coming to Egypt. Let me see if I can still recall all the 28 letters. Now what story did I make?' Magnus had a habit of linking information to stories to better remember stuff. After some time, he recalled all the alphabets with the help of the story he assigned for them. 
'Alright, now let's see, this should be Wands in Widows cu-' he stopped with a blush. 'Shouldn't have looked at that book Jimmy gave. Let's try again, "Wondrous Widow's Cures", that should be right.' He waited for a bit for any adverse effects. If there was a curse on the book, it usually takes hold either when you touch it or read it, at least according to his limited knowledge. Since nothing happened, he continued reading the book one word at a time.
The going was slow, but he persevered. He had nothing to do anyway so he took it as a fun way to pass time. The book should be a few hundred pages at the minimum. He took some breaks in between and his reading got faster the more he read. By the time he felt hungry, he read some 50 pages and understood less than a fourth of it. He learned that just because you know the alphabet, doesn't mean that you can understand a language quickly. The fact that it read from right to left didn't make it any easy. While he missed out a lot of what he read, he could make out that it was a potions book. It was only possible because his mum taught him some basic knowledge of potions and he could recognize some familiar terms and plant names. He couldn't make out any of the recipes though.
It was night time so he closed the book. He ate a meal of berries and the last piece of cheese before going to bed.  That night he dreamt of his life in London. What started as a game with his friends in schoolground somehow turned into a battlefield with loud explosions and raging fires. Screams of people filled his dream as a gigantic cackling head of a hag rose from the darkness and swallowed everything.  

Magnus Webb undergoes a tragedy right as he enters the wizarding world. In his quest for revenge he becomes involved in a conspiracy that’s centuries in the making. As if all of this isn’t confusing enough, why is this Dark Lord guy always interfering with his plans? 


The story has a slow start and will pick up as it goes on. The 'system' elements aren't heavy here. The content will get mature as the story progresses.

'Come – look – window! See!' He blurted. The three boys ran over, Nicholas shoving the other two boys out the way roughly. But when they all peered beyond the blackness of the night sky, they saw nothing. The creature had vanished.

'Shut up, Joey, there's nothing there – why'd you make us all run over like that?' said Nicholas, shoving Damien's shoulder back and squaring up to him.

'There was something there, on the lawn, I'm telling you I saw it!' said Damien, furious that he had been caught out a second time by the vanishing creature.

'Oh yeah? Prove it. Show us this creature.'

'I can't, it's gone'

'It's gone?'

'Yeah, you heard me. But it was there a second ago!'

'Of course it was' said Nicholas with an infuriatingly flippant inflection. His dismissal enraged Damien, who began to clench his fists.

'Get lost, Nick' said Damien, turning to climb into his bed.

'What did you say?' said Nicholas, sucking in his lips and raising his eyebrows. All of the anger that had built up inside Damien came to a boiling point. He thought of every time that Nicholas had said something that made him angry, that made him feel lost, like an outsider, alone. He turned and flung himself at the larger boy, fists clenched and shooting for his body. He managed to land a punch on Nicholas's cheek, and one glanced off his stomach, almost connecting powerfully. Nicholas stumbled backwards but grabbed Damien and turned, both of them falling to the floor with a loud crack, damaging the floorboards. As they scuffled on the floor, Miles and Peter shouted at Damien to leave off. Footsteps sounded above the noise of the two boys. Matron stood in the doorway, positively crimson with rage. What followed was a barely coherent barrage of fury from the battleaxe Scottish stout woman, with both of the boys receiving fists over the back of their heads that hurt far more than any blow they had taken during their fight. As the door to their dormitory slammed, and the two boys clambered silently into bed, Nicholas muttered something about Damien lying. Damien rolled over and stared at the wall, thinking of home, of everything he missed, and about Elizabeth, and how stupid he had been to try and impress her in the classroom. Surely, she would never forgive him, and never understand why he felt this way for her. It was irrational, and he himself struggled to come to terms with why it was prudent to maintain these feelings, but he allowed all his logical reasoning to slip away every time he thought of her.

The next day began much the same as the last. News of the fight spread like bushfire throughout the school, which surprisingly did something to improve Damien's reputation among some of the more downtrodden students, the other victims of Nicholas's bullying. His thoughts, however, were plagued by the creature he had seen from his dorm room window the day before. Over the lunch break, he decided to go and talk to Carson about it. His office was on the other side of the school from the dining hall, so he ran there after eating his lunch quickly. His steps echoed down the long hallways that played the sound back to him in a condensed way, and his breathing fogged the air in front of him in the cold. He reached Carson's door, and knocked. It opened and Carson stood there.

'Hello Damien' he said, as if he was expecting him. He turned and walked further into the room, leaving the door open for Damien to walk through.

Carson's office was Damien's favourite room in the entire school. It was compact and crammed from floor to ceiling with old books, pieces of antique furniture, academic papers, and paintings of aristocrats, the eyes of whom seemed to follow him about the room with unmoving stares. There was something about his office, as indeed there was something about Carson's character, that made Damien feel comfortable, almost at home. There was a warmth to it all – the strewn cigarette butts, somehow out of place in a master's office, the dusty chairs that maintained their weathered look despite being used regularly enough to ward off the dust. Damien pulled out a wooden chair and sat. Opposite him, on a faded red sofa, Carson slumped and placed a finger on his temple. Staring into the eyes of the boy with an earnest glare, the way he always did, he sighed and tapped the finger against his head.

'Well, what is it? Nicholas giving you trouble again?'

'No. Well, yes, but that's not it this time.'

'Well, what is it then?'

'It sounds ridiculous...'

'Damien, we're time travellers in a world that has scarcely mastered the process of making fire, cosmically speaking – ridiculous is good. Go on.'

'Well, I've been seeing things–'

'Quite common among overworked young students as I understand' he said quickly with a smirk.

'Not like that. I've been seeing creatures, out of the window. Moving about in the distance, often only for a second, as if they're not really there.'

'Creatures?'

'That's the only way I can think to describe them...'

'Can you be any more specific?'

'Not really. They're dark, I suppose, not really human. I see them near the woods mostly.'

There was a pause as Carson's hand came down from the side of his head to his chin, as he broke Damien's eye contact to let his stare wander over the bookshelf above the boy's head. As he did so, his hand kept stroking his coarse black stubble.

'Near the woods, you say?'

'Yes. Why? Does that mean something?'

'I can't really say. All I know is that what you're seeing might be a serious matter.' At this, Carson rose and strode over to the bookshelf he had been studying from a distance. He reached and took down a heavily worn ledger and placed on his desk. 'Do you know anything of the history of this house? Before it was bought up by Faraday and made into a school?'

Damien was confused and wore a puzzled look as he studied the ledger, eager to know what information it contained.

'Not really,' he said quickly, believing this would reveal Carson's answers in a more urgent fashion. Carson perched himself on the edge of his large desk, eyed the boy wearily, and sighed.

'This house was once owned by a Royal called Lord Edward, a few hundred years ago. He was a greatly respected and revered master of delineation, alchemy, all of the sciences that constitute the lifeblood of Tracers. In the basement, a place which is now securely sealed by numerous wards and defences, was his laboratory. He conducted all kinds of experiments down there, but there was one that made his work truly extraordinary.' All the while through Carson's story, Damien was enthralled, he creeped further to the edge of his chair until he was leaning forward, hanging on his every word.

'He supposedly found a way to extract the life force of a living thing and convert it into electricity. A remarkable achievement, yes – but morally corrupt. You see, the living thing in question is of course consumed in the process. He went mad from the experiment, started trying to tamper with his own life force, make it stronger. He murdered his own wife and daughter, and used their corpses to fuel his mad creation. He took every animal he could find from his grounds and brought them to their deaths inside his contraption. The only surviving evidence of any of this is the diary of Edward's butler. He chronicled what he could, but feared for his own life. I don't know why he didn't just get out of there while he could. While he remained useful to Edward, he knew he could not be touched.' Carson stopped and shook his head. 'Anyway, the story goes that his niece came to his house to stay – sent here while her mother recovered in Paris from the news of her father's sudden death. Everyone was entirely unaware of the nature of his work, his madness. She died, in the end. He murdered them all. Then vanished – never to be seen again.' Carson could see the confusion and intrigue still on Damien's face. 'The point is' he continued, 'there is a story that tells of the ghosts of the two young girls murdered in the basement, haunting the halls of this house. I don't know if there's any truth to it. But if their life force was not completely burnt up in the machine, and some element of their being escaped into the house, it could still be lingering in some manifest form – that's what you could have seen.'

Damien shuddered. Could that creature he saw have once been a girl? Not too much younger than himself, and lured to her death by her uncle? It was a grim prospect. He shook his head and looked at the floor, dissatisfied with this conclusion. His friends, and certainly Nicholas, would be even less likely to believe this story than the idea that he had simply seen a shape from the window.

'Your best bet' said Carson after a pause 'is to go to the library. There are plenty of volumes in there about the history of the house.'

'They wouldn't come near the house' said Damien, in a moment of inspiration.

'Sorry?' said Carson, taken aback by the suddenness of Damien's thought. 'They wouldn't approach, they're always miles away. Isn't that important? If they are the ghosts of these two girls, why would they stay outside and be afraid to approach the house? It doesn't make sense – surely they would just escape and fly away or something?'

'I'm not sure. There are plenty of wards around the house and grounds that could influence the movement of a spirit or life force. As I say – head to the library. Just look for an entry in the bestiary about a creature that matches what you saw that is particularly susceptible to Helix wards. That's the type that we use around the house itself.'

'Ok. I will – thank you, Carson,' said Damien, rising and heading towards the door.

In the library, Damien spent hours trawling through the volumes of bestiaries available on the shelves. They were all creatures he had already learnt about at some point, and there was almost no unique information available on any of them. They all were entered with no illustrations, generic descriptions, and no tangible evidence that any of them even existed. They earlier he went in the entries, the worse it got. The writing devolved into storytelling and myth, rather than actual fact. The binding of the books was frail and ancient, and he suspected that they had never been used for any kind of useful purpose until now. He looked out of the window and saw the sun setting in the distance. He flicked the light switch at the end of the library and returned to his desk. He had already missed the entire afternoon of lessons, including Reikan's seminar on portals. He would be annoyed, perhaps even angry, but Damien didn't care at this moment. He was determined to vindicate his own senses, and prove that what he had seen was real. But it was useless. Nothing was to be found. After another few hours of hopeless searching, he yawned and slammed shut the final volume of the bestiary. He had found nothing that matched his description. Rising and placing the books back on the shelves, he thought about what he would say to his teachers the next day. Feigning illness was out of the question, as matron wouldn't believe he could come down with something so quickly after being interlocked in full blown fighting just the previous evening. He shook his head and left the library.

Walking back to his dorm, he felt a presence shadowing him. He glanced over his shoulder and saw nothing but the statues of the school's founders decorating the outdoor hallways that looked out onto the courtyard. He heard footsteps and turned around. There, standing just a few feet away from him, was the creature he had seen out on the lawn last night.

A young time-traveller experiences life at a boarding school full of drama, social cliques and the occasional monster.

There was almost nothing about Min, anywhere. He seemed the perfect example of a loner. Friendless. Unremarkable. Somehow, he could understand how that would make the academy the perfect refuge, if he was in danger. 
 He was finally ready to accept that he was Min. If the bug or whatever he found was on his account, hidden in the logs, then he no longer had it. But was that the only copy he had? He thought hard. He was himself. Even with his memories lost, what made him and defined him would be unchanged. And so, if he thought hard, about it or anything else, he would be thinking the same as the him with the memories. 
 So, what would he do? Would he have only one copy? 
 Absolutely not. 
 If he made copies, would he save them on his account space on the server? 
 Absolutely not. He would ensure that the copies were somewhere safe, somewhere no electronic code could reach. He would keep copies written in hand, hide them where no one would think of searching. 
 The library. 
 He pulled up the academy map. He found the library easily enough. But where was he? Sure, he was in his dorm. But which hostel was it? 
 He committed the map to memory. Took some effort and time. But he had enough energy and patience. He made a mental note of how easy it was. When he was ready, he wore a blank face and walked out. 
 It was late in the morning. Most doors were closed shut, seeming like the dorms were empty. The few students that were in the hostel were all boys. And none of them showed any reaction to him, like they didn't even recognise him. They were all occupied with themselves. No one had the intent to spare a thought for any other. 
 Min was happy with the state of things. It meant he didn't have to spare the effort to learn of those who might have a relationship with him. 
 Leaving the hostel, he recognised where he was immediately. Green Earth Hostel. In the east of the academy grounds. The furthest from the library in the south. 
 The map in his head superimposed over the image in his eyes, and he walked with ease and familiarity toward the library. 
 It was a school day. Students were either in class or were studying. There were very few out walking or playing in the field. Min was recording every detail. No detail was too small. 
 It was a ten minute walk to the library. He didn't pause before entering. The library was a three story building, with two tall pillars in the front, in the middle of which was the wide entrance. There were no windows in the building. The inside was climate controlled. The library even had its own generator for emergencies. The setup was essential because there were precious ancient books, both printed and hand-written, inside. The library was among the buildings with the highest footfalls within the academy grounds, not considering the fact that over two thirds of the visitors were students of the advanced classes and teachers. 
 There were many in the sitting area of the first story, reading the books in the library and writing into their notebooks. Hardly anyone even noticed the presence of Min. 
 Min cleared his head, opened his eyes wide and walked where his legs took him. Nothing stopped him on the first story. He went up the stairs to the second story. There were more advanced books on the second story. He paused at the rack with the mathematics books. He walked into the aisle, eyes scanning the names on the spines, until he read one that pulled him to a stop. 
 Linear analysis of social clusters. Authored by Prof Wuchang. 
 Min pulled out the book and began reading where he stood.

 Preface
 Prof Winstrop couldn't be more true when he said mathematics was transcending. Today, we are at a point where the borders are blurred and subjects are less distinct. 
 As for the math around which this book revolves, it began with Dr Meer's proposal that ideas could be represented as two dimensional diagrams on a chart. As weird as it sounded at first, it worked. The immediately visible result was the spike in sociological programming and in enhanced reality. 
 Today, a major branch of human evolution is the enhancement of the reality we live in through integration of biological intelligence with electronic computation through sensory channels. 
 It is in that space that this book exists.

 Min shut the book and returned it to the shelf. He could predict the words that would come next with the certainty of one who had read them before and memorised them. The familiarity he felt with the book and the math it explained was one that was born from true understanding. He might have forgotten it, but he was sure a quick read would bring it all back. But that wasn't what was pressing right now. What was important was that he understood how the book would direct his decision. 
 Sure, it was his area of interest. Anyone who read his student profile would know that. And that would bring them right to this book. But they would find nothing. No notes. No remarks. No clue. Nothing at all. 
 But that didn't mean the book wasn't important. On the contrary, the book was a marker pointing to the exact location where his notes were hidden. The book's title was the clue. Min smiled as if impressed with himself as he walked over to the social studies section and searched for books on social clusters. When he found them, he didn't pick any but walked to the aisle two racks away and picked the book directly behind the books on social clusters. It was a book on programming human languages by Prof Lushe, who too mentioned Dr Meer in the preface. 
 He studied the book carefully, and found a thin sheet of paper folded in half twice hidden underneath the book's jacket. He put the book back on the shelf and walked away with the sheet of paper to the sitting area. He grabbed a thick book along the way. Symbols - The origins of cryptology, by Prof Adkirn. He lay the book open in front of him while he actually studied the sheet of paper that he laid open on the book. 
 He didn't need long to decipher the key. It was his own code. Then, he began reading earnestly.

What if one morning you woke up with no memories? 

What if all you had was a video message you left for yourself, warning you that you were in grave danger? 

What if the only way to survive was in discovering what you forgot? 

And what if your biggest enemy was yourself?

"There is a bug. It allows unmitigated access to the users' consciousness. You're the only one who knows. You must stop the release. You must stop them." 

That was the primal directive. Min needed time to understand, to accept. But time was the one thing he didn't have. 

He woke up with no memories. He only had the one video message he left himself to work with. The video told him he was a beta tester of Gaia, and he had discovered a bug that could very well be intentional. 

What he was asking of himself was to be a hero. But was that what he wanted? Was that really him in the video? 

If it was him, why go through all that trouble? Why did he delete all of his memories himself? 

Who were the people helping him from the shadows? Were they friends? Or, were they something else entirely? 

Who were those that were after him? Were they all related to Gaia? Or were there other secrets too? 

School was the perfect refuge. Friendless and unremarkable, he couldn't be hidden better. But with less than three months to graduation, he was running out of time...

The first time Marjoe saw Billy smile after his mother's death was three weeks later.
Susanna and the two boys had wandered off to the nearby lake and were now skipping stones over its smooth surface.
Marjoe, who was horrible at skipping stones, had instead decided to climb on top of a large boulder that laid near the lake, to recite one of the many stories that Yuma had read to him over the years.
He gestured with his hands as if he was telling the most fantastic tale to a giant crowd instead of a children's story to his friends. When he came to the climax of his story, he whirled around on top of his bolder before jumping in the air. 

Susanna gasped in horror as she watched her friend bouncing around two meters above the ground. Billy, on the other hand, started giggling softly. When Susanna stared at him instead, his giggle turned into a burst of hysterical laughter that left him gasping for air.

After Sanna had convinced Marjoe to join them on the much safer ground, they sprawled out in the wet grass and watched the clouds slowly float over them.

"Joey, can I ask you somethin'?" Billy asked after a few seconds of silence.
"Sure, what's up?" Marjoe replied, absent-minded while his eyes followed an oddly shaped cloud.
"Where are all the stories your brother tells you coming from?"
"Well, from the books, of course."
"Yeah, I know," Billy said, leaning on his elbows to look at Marjoe. "But, where does he get the books from?"

That got his attention. He had never thought about where Yuma got the books he brought home on a daily basis. It had always been natural to him that they would appear and disappear in their room pretty regularly. He had never even thought about questioning his brother. That was just how things were done in this town. Everything that happened was simply accepted without demanding any answers at all. The same pretty much happened with the Undertaker. Nobody really tried to find out more about him or anything at all, really.

"I don't know," Marjoe said slowly more and more questions forming in his head.
"Well, you could just ask him," Susanna proposed with a smile on her pink lips.
Marjoe just nodded and went back to staring into the sky.

The sun had just disappeared behind the horizon when Marjoe arrived home. He kicked off his muddy boots in the entrance and went to the room he shared with his brother.
Yuma was already there, solving the homework he had brought home from school.

Because Yuma was twelve, six years older than Marjoe, he was about to finish the five years of school the kids in town were supposed to complete. Is wasn't mandatory, but most parents decided to send their kids to school in the morning and have them help with the chores when they got off in the afternoon. 

They mostly learned the basics of writing, reading, and maths as well as discipline and some fundamentals of agriculture and so on.

"Hey Yuma," Marjoe chimed and plopped down on the bed next to the tiny desk. The room was so small that there was barely enough space for the two beds, the table and chair, and a small dresser. Which meant that one of them usually had to sit on either the mattress or the floor.

Yuma only grunted too concentrated on his assignment to really pay attention. 
"Yuma," Marjoe said again. "Where do you always get the books from?"
Yuma's hand stilled, but he didn't turn around. Instead, he just stared down on paper in front of him.
"From the library," Yuma said, trying to sound nonchalant and failing miserably.
Marjoe shook his head.
"That's not true," he declared after thinking about it for a second. "I've been to the library with mom. There are only boring books. Aboud fields and math and trees. I've never seen any of your books there."

Yuma just shrugged.
"What does it matter, anyway?"
"Because!" Marjoe reasoned with the conviction only a six-year-old could have.
"That's a dumb reason," Yuma accused.

At that moment, they heard the front door open and close as their mother called out to them.
Marjoe grinned evilly at his brother and jumped off the bed.
"Fine. If you don't wanna tell me, I'm just gonna ask mom."

A panicked look crossed over Yuma's face. He knew that as soon as Joey started asking questions about them, his mother could no longer ignore the strange books he kept bringing home. He leaped off his chair, grabbed his little brother, and covered his mouth with his hand when he tried to make a ruckus.

"Ok, ok," he hissed into Marjoes ear. "I'll show you tomorrow. Just stop asking stupid questions."
"You promise?" Joey asked with gleaming eyes after pulling his brother's sweaty hand off his face.

Yuma just sighed. "Yeah, I promise."

Marjoe grows up in a world without a god. There is only the Undertaker. He's the boogeyman under your bed, the nightmare of your sleepless night. Nobody knows where he came from or what his goal is. The only thing Marjoe knows it that wherever he appears, someone dies in the next 24 hours. 
When one day, the Undertaker takes his mother with him, Marjoe has to go on a journey to retrieve his mother's soul.
