Tony went and picked up Wanda, who was surprisingly chill about his absence and was quite happy to not only find her family's legacy, but also meet her mother's spirit. Then he picked up Peter who even more surprisingly had some facial hairs and had an air of maturity around him as he was now living alone in a well furnished house given to him by Stark, after which they went to the Sanctum sanctorum where they found Stephen strange, who was quite welcoming as he knew about the people in front of him as the guardians of earth.

Stephen was shocked to know about Thanos's plan to retrieve the Infinity Stones from the universe for a maniacal genocide and agreed to go to Wakanda to help them.

Everyone was surprised by Sorcerer's powers but quickly composed themselves as T'Challa quickly came to greet them with Shuri, who too, was quite chill about Tony's absence.

"Listen guys, raise the barrier. They can come at anytime. The Black Order believes that the Mind Stone and the Time Stone both are on earth, here in Wakanda and they will stop at nothing to get them. 
Now I don't know why they think that the Time stone is here, but I do have the Mind stone."

Tony then placed his hand inside his inner suit pocket and took out a yellow shining gem, enclosed in a vibranium mesh and then in a transparent containment.

"I have enclosed it in a containment which is almost impossible to break by normal means and also stops anyone to detect the gem. I think Wakanda is the safest place on earth for this."

Tony was bullshitting left and right and they all were listening to him as if their lives depended on it. Stephen narrowed his eyes when he got to know about the Time stone being in Wakanda, and started to look suspiciously all around him.

"Ok guys, I need to go and try to get more help from the X-Men. Be sure to protect it." Said Tony before placing the enclosed yellow gem in the palms of Bruce and flying out of Wakanda in his Endo-Sym armor.

He went up to a table which was presenting some data about somethings when Tony willed it and all the three stones flew out of him and started to revolve around his palms.

Meanwhile a Teleportation Circle, which was a Mystic art opened inside of Odin's vault and Tony stepped out of it as the portal behind him closed. He then started walking inside of Odin's vault which was now very sophisticated with all the different types of machines which were scanning and studying the treasures all around the vault.

Tony went up to the Casket of Ancient Winters and looked at the research done by Jarvis on it wen suddenly Hela appeared behind him and placed her Necrosword on his neck.

"Should I just destroy all these treasures? It seems to me like you value them so much more than….." said Hela with smirk and a raised an eyebrow

"I upgraded that sword, and you are gonna threaten me with that?" replied Tony as he turned around and flicked her sword away, which was handled by Hela with a weak grip and fell in the corner of the Vault.

Tony then suddenly picked Hela up and started to kiss her passionately to which Hela became extremely happy and wrapped her legs around Tony and kissed him back.
They both then separated a little after making out passionately and started laughing. Tony took her to their kitchen and made her some of her favorite food and they started chatting while eating the food.

As the food finished, Tony said with a deep thought

"Hela, I need to go to Nidavellir. I need more Uru and possibly the weapon designs and techniques of crafting."

Hela was a bit hesitant with Tony's demand as Nidavellir was destroyed by Thanos, but then she just sighed and nodded as she just couldn't seem to say no to her precious one.

He also sensed Eitri the Dwarf King sitting in despair with his hands enclosed in a casing by Thanos so he couldn't make any more weapons.

"So is this Nidavellir?" Said Tony out aloud so he could attract the Dwarf King's attention.

Eitri suddenly got up and ran towards Tony but was instantly stopped in his tracks. He felt that someone was pressing him on the ground and he couldn't do anything about it.

"Easy there Eitri" 

"You! Who are you? And What do you want?"

"Oh, I just want to relieve you of your pain."

Suddenly a green light shone on Tony as many kinds of runes hovered over his body. Eitri was shocked and afraid as to whatever was happening when suddenly an extreme amount of energy exited Tony's body and all the broken things around him started to revert to their original state. 
Eitri's hands too started to get out of the cast which disappeared in thin air.

"See, I told you that I was here to help" said Tony with a trusting smile.

Eitri was suddenly in tears to see his hands again and all his equipment working. 

"Man, Only If I had the gauntlet, I would've been able to stop Thanos and revert everything back to how it was before his Carnage." continued Tony in a sad tone as his eyes started to get wet.

"Was that the power of a Stone?" Asked Eitri with astonishment as he heard Tony's voice to which the latter just nodded and showed him the Time Stone.

"I have it now but what's the point? Thanos will come and take this too, after which he will wipe out half the universe. I have nothing to stop him so I came here to get your help."

Tony then started lying his way into The Dwarf King's heart. He also told him that Thanos had killed Thor and Loki when he came there to get the Space Stone and now Asgard is ruled by their elder sister Hela who was the first wielder of Mjolnir which was personally made by him. 
He kept buttering up Eitri to help him and Eitri too, easily complied at the idea of Tony bringing all his friends to life by the gauntlet.

The Dwarf King then presented Tony with a huge amount of Uru with all the schematics and casts of different types of godly weapons which Tony happily saved in his AI. Tony also scanned the schematics of the Infinity Gauntlet to understand the workings of the mystical object and after he was done, He said

"Eitri, Why don't you come to Asgard? I will get all these equipments there. Help us build weapons to defeat Thanos."

Eitri was hesitant at Stark's suggestion but then Tony smiled a little and Eitri suddenly thought that it was reasonable and important and then agreed to Tony.

The Reason I'm writing this and not continuing my other novels is that I am in hospital and the chapters of those novels are saved up in my desktop at home. Now till I recover in this Hospital, I will write this fiction and maybe more from my mobile.

"We might need to take it a step further, just to make it look completely legitimate," thought Stephen. "Can you come up with a drivers license, maybe a college ID card? You know, stuff like that?"

"You mean, like this?" Grace asked, giving a cheeky smile, and pulling an Illinois driver's license out of thin air. Her picture on it was perfect, as well as having her new name, Grace Martin.

"Perfect!" Stephen remarked, checking out the ID. "Although, I think 5'3" is wishful thinking."

She stuck her tongue out at him, playfully.

"This is great, though! Mom should be home from work early afternoon today, and we'll just introduce you then. This should be a breeze," said Stephen, thinking out loud.

"I hope she likes me," said Grace, with a tiny quiver in her voice. "What if she doesn't?"

Stephen chuckled at her small insecurity, "Grace, I'm sure she'll love you."

"You really think so?"

"Of course. Besides, if she doesn't, I can always wish it so that she does," he smirked.

"Stephen! I want her to like me without magic," Grace pouted. "I want her to think that I'm a good match for you and that we belong together." She lowered her head, her genuine nerves at the approaching situation shining through.

"Grace, come here," gestured Stephen.

Wordlessly, she lifted herself from the chair in his room and came to the bed, where he was casually laying. Stephen helped her get back in, straddling his hips, and pressing her down against him in a full body laying hug. He gently stroked her back, and then whispered, "She'll love you. I just know that. How could she not?"

He slowly moved her head to align with his own, gazing into her eyes, "You're a perfect fit for me in every way."

Grace sniffled almost immediately, as her fingers rushed to each eye to wipe away the forming tears. "I love you, Stephen."

Stephen smiled softly, hearing her words and feeling like his heart could explode at any moment. His own feelings matched hers, well beyond the realm of just 'like' or simple lust. The truth of the matter was that he was also in love with Grace, even after only three days with her. There was just no denying that fact any longer. Yet, he had never told someone other than family that he had loved them. He opened his mouth, yet the words would just not form.

"I... I...," he began, struggling for the courage to tell Grace what she truly meant to him.

Her eyes blazed like bright blue beacons. "Yes?" She whispered. 

"I... I'm excited," he finished, chickening out, and avoiding eye contact with her for the moment. "I'm excited for what will happen today."

when lyra woke up she was in her bed she thought claud brought her so she went to freshen up.

Today was to be an important day, seven years of work's completion. Stephen Umber, 57 years old, and team leader for the design team which currently surrounded him was watching as his team moved the bare car chassis that was the culmination of their work to the center of the work shop. Having been an engineer for 31 years Stephen had experienced many similar events, when the ultimate goal was on the cusp of being achieved, however he believed this was most likely to be the most significant. The new engine could use a special hydrocarbon fuel, scientists had recently developed that could be efficiently produced from water that was in the presence of a carbon dioxide containing atmosphere. This new engine combined with the fuel making process would remove the necessity of batteries being used by cars, it was a matter of international importance. The team finished setting up the new engine in its chassis. 

"You do the honours, Stephen" says the deputy head with a jovial cheer. 

He hands Stephen the small control box with a large red button. With great excitement all the team looks on excitedly as Stephen presses down the button, the sound of the motor turning over a little sounds out before BOOM! an explosion rocks out from the engine shrapnel blasting outwards. All Stephen sees is a bright flash before a large chunk of his life's greatest achievement flies through his head killing him instantly.

Suddenly, a teenage boy sits up in his bed breathing heavily having just woken from a nightmare. He looks at his hands confused and down along his toned body before looking even more confused around the large room. 

'Where am I?' Stephen thinks to himself noticing the large opulent room and feeling the smooth and soft silk sheets against his oddly young body. 

Another thought comes to his mind 'who am I?' 

As the thought comes to his mind a pain racks through his head and he grips his temples fighting the pain. Many memories belonging to someone else rushes through his head, "Alexander Halgran? Is that my name? Or the name of the previous owner of this body?". 

Stephen sits on the bed thinking over the memories in his head, Alexander, a prince of the Kingdom of Halgran, the third prince. Alexander doesn't seem to be particularly famous, a minor military career, not bad nor great, and a similar diplomatic career. An unexceptional prince. From the memories it seems that the King is deathly ill... this nation's inheritance laws not handing the kingship to the eldest son or anything similar, instead after every king dies the nation is almost always embroiled into civil war as the princes compete for rule. 

Stephen knows this doesn't bode well for him. 'I may as well sleep and deal with this in the morning...' Stephen thinks before drifting off to sleep.

Beams of light drift down onto Alexander Halgran, who is now seemingly inhabited by Stephen Umber. Stephen, no Alexander woke up at this bright light and attempted to sit up in his bed only to find himself currently pinned by a large black shape. The large black shape raises its head revealing it to be a large wolf like dog, currently resting its large torso on his chest. Alexander almost has a heart attack from fear before recognition comes across him followed by another rush of memories belonging to the previous Alexander, who was who was very confusing for poor Stephen/Alexander. 

"Lucio…" Alexander whispers extending his one free hand towards the large dog, its eyes immediately responding to its name. 

The dog stretches its head towards the hand with a gentleness defying its large menacing appearance. Alexander now remembers Lucio, his dog who had been with him/ the old Alexander for most of their lives. 

"Well Lucio… this is all very confusing…" he remarks to Lucio more for his own benefit then the now slightly confused dog. 

As Alexander looked at the dog the doors to his bedchamber burst open.
"Prince Alexander!? Are you awake!?" calls out a young woman clearly a maid and clearly a little older than Alexander.

Alexander responds nervously, "Um… yes…" and awkward silence embroils the whole room before he realises his mistake. 

"Yes, I am awake, Maria" he says in a voice filled with new-found confidence and a slight tinge of bravado attempting to mimic the old Alexander, "Why have you burst into my room so rudely? What is going on?"

Slightly breathless Maria responds quickly stammering slightly, "The king, his majesty, has summoned you, your highness and the princes to the throne room."

Maria draws a deep breath before calmly continuing, "I do not know why he summons, only that you only have a very short amount of time to be present."

Numerous thoughts rush through Alexander's head as he considers the possibilities, the king, as everyone knows, isn't far from death, this could be an announcement relating to his inheritance. Alexander feels his palms become sweaty as he gently but also quickly shoves the hulking form of Lucio off of him. 

"Leave now" he orders hurriedly to Maria, and as soon as she leaves he rushes around the room attempting to use his memories to find his clothes and remember how exactly some of the more complex, unusual and ceremonial articles go on. 

After getting fully dressed he fumbles with his sword belt attempting to correctly attach his sabre. 

"Stay Lucio, you can't come with me" he quickly says to the confused dog which has been watching him from his bed this whole time, before rushing out of the room and towards the throne room. 

Almost running through the corridors Alexander finds himself almost bumping into many of the servants going about their morning duties. Eventually he reaches the large foyer to the throne room where he can see his siblings all patiently waiting seemingly having been given more notice than him.

"Ah, Alexander, you have finally arrived" quietly calls Percible in a snickering voice, his thin body and dark complexion making him look the part of the schemer that he is. Percible the second prince had earned his fame as had their older brother and Alexander during the Great Magic War, Percible as a cunningly backstabbing diplomat. 

'Wait!' thinks Alexander, 'Magic!? That exists here!? What is this Dungeons and Dragons!?'. 

Alexander had many fond memories of Dungeons and Dragons from his previous life, he was 13 when first edition had been released, and he had loved it despite that early version's numerous flaws. Now as Alexander compared what he remembered about the world of Dungeons and Dragons and this new place he was in the similarities were striking. Most notably the existence of dwarves, elves and goblins, each of these races having been important in the Great Magic War, when humanity had pushed for more territory invading each of those races.

A deep and strong voice reached Alexander's ears, "uh, brother you are here. I do wish father is well" when Alexander looked towards the stoic man who was the source of his voice he saw his eldest brother, first prince of Halgran, Ildan, a famed military leader. 
"Hello brothers, do either of you know why father has called us?" Alexander politely responds, to which Percible just shrugs and Ildan shakes his head looking at the ground with concern.

The large doors of the throne room swing open, standing looking at the three princes stands the king's advisor, Darius.

"Come now, princes, the king will not be awake long" Darius says quickly before immediately turning around and walking down the long length of the throne room.

Waiting down the far end of the throne room upon a throne of massive proportions covered in copious amounts of gold that raises him far above everyone else in the room. The trio of princes quickly follow the adviser and each knelt in front of the large throne. Now closer to the throne Alexander noticed an old and wizened man sitting just behind the throne, 'this man is the wizard working to keep my father alive' thinks Alexander.

"Welcome my sons" says the king in a high reedy voice week from age and disease, "I have called you hear today because I fear for my kingdom, and for you my sons. For three generations only one prince has been present for the death of the previous king, and during this time our great kingdom has flourished. And yet here we are, on the brink of repeating the scenario that destroyed this city five generations ago. As such, to any of you my sons, who are willing to renounce your inheritance I will grant a governorship over part of the new and prosperous lands each of you had a hand in cleansing of the goblin filth."

Alexander realizing this is the exact opportunity he has been looking for to save his life faced with an impending war immediately shouts, "My lord father, I will renounce my title of prince and accept your offer, I have no intentions upon the throne."

The king's smile grows, only one more of his sons needs to accept his offer now and the kingdom will be saved from ruin.

"Father", a snickering voice calls out, "I will not be denied my birth right to fight for the crown, if my brothers wish to give it to me, then that will be fine." Concludes Percible.

The king appears to visibly age and peers over to Ildan a last glimmer of hope burning in his eyes, "Ildan, what about you my son?" he asks deeply concerned.

Ildan sighs heavily, a deep burden resting upon him, "father, I am beloved by the people, a hero of the war. I could not in good conscience leave the kingdom to Percible. Our traditions exist in order to choose the strongest king."

The king's visage grows dark, he slumps back into his throne, wrinkles appearing to grow on his face. After some time of just looking up at the portraits of previous kings and paintings of battle scenes on the ceiling he finally speaks again, "Alexander, you are no longer a prince of this realm, but you are now baron of the town of Sapphire Lake. Take with you fifty thrones of gold and choose an advisor from the Presidium, a clerk should do. Also, Mondaeus will go with you." 

The weakened king then turns to Darius, "see to it that all of this is done and that Alexander leaves on a river galley tomorrow." Turning away from Darius back towards his sons he concludes saying, "my kingdom, my life's achievement will be destroyed but so be it. Leave now, and you who are still princes do not look at me again until… until I am in my coffin."

Alexander is the first to rise and bow quickly leaving the throne room.

The Thousand Treasures rarely had any conflict with those of other races, but their powers most certainly positioned them in the top ten races of the universe. Many suspected they could easily land a spot in the top five.
Stephen and Sonic Butterfly King readied themselves to leave, when suddenly a man and a woman entered the base. With them was a little girl. The two Kings frowned upon seeing them.
They hadn't noticed that the man was Han Sen, but they felt the presence of the Jade Drum that Huangfu Jing was carrying. They frowned at her sternly.
Since they had to register their Drums, there was no point in trying to hide what they had found.
And in regards to the Thousand Treasures, they wouldn't help a customer hide their Jade Drum, either. The Thousand Treasures wanted the universe to know every time someone found a Jade Drum on Planet Jade Drum. It would be very good for their business. So Han Sen and Huangfu Jing carried their Jade Drums openly.
Since they were going to register their drums, they didn't have to hide their identities, either. Every Jade Drum claimed would be advertised. So, Han Sen took Huangfu Jing to register their findings right away.
Sonic Butterfly King and Stephen saw Han Sen and Huangfu Jing approach the registration booth. They kept staring at Huangfu Jing's bag. They could sense the Jade Drum inside, but they knew they couldn't be 100% certain that's what it was until they saw it.
When Huangfu Jing took her Jade Drum out of her bag, the Kings sucked in a sharp breath of air.
"A Jade Drum... That's a Jade Drum!" Those of the other races saw Huangfu Jing reveal a Jade Drum, and many of them couldn't keep themselves from shouting.
"It has been a year since the last Jade Drum was found."
"Look at her presence. She is a Marquise at the very most. I can't believe she was lucky enough to find one of those legendary Jade Drums."
"Haha! Is this good luck or bad? It will be difficult to determine. Things don't always go well for a Marquise who finds a Jade Drum."
All the Kings were talking quietly amongst themselves. The workers in the base were just as surprised to see the Jade Drum, as well. But they still registered it to her like it was nothing out of the ordinary.
Doing business with the Thousand Treasures was reliable. They had even sold deified treasures before. Nothing bad ever happened in one of their places of business. They wouldn't try anything underhanded to attempt to secure a Jade Drum.
They followed their procedures and protocol as was customary. Huangfu Jing handed in her access ticket, then struck her Jade Drum. After the registration was complete, the Jade Drum was confirmed to be an official possession of hers.
Stephen could not help himself from walking over to Huangfu Jing and asking, "Friend, are you selling that Jade Drum of yours?"
"Sorry, I don't plan on selling it," Huangfu Jing said.
She was just an Earl. A Duke Jade Drum could be very beneficial to her, and it would be much safer for her to explore with it in tow. Killing xenogeneics would be much easier, as well. Huangfu Jing had no intention of selling it.
Of course, that was also because no King planned on attacking her just yet.
Stephen frowned, but he wasn't going to give up so easily. He went on to say, "Do not reject my request just yet. I am Stephen from the Naga. Give me your sum. Name any price. I won't try to haggle you for a bargain."
"Sorry." Huangfu Jing did not move a muscle, save to give him her quick answer of no.
Stephen's face looked dire. So, Sonic Butterfly King came forward and said, "Kid, it won't be easy to look after a Jade Drum. I can trade you my Duke-class Eight Sonic Butterfly for it. And on top of that, I will keep you safe. What do you say to that?"
"Sorry." Huangfu Jing's answer was still the same cold response.
"If you do not sell it right now, you will regret it the moment you set foot off of Planet Jade Drum. But by then, it will be too late. If you want to sell it, now is your chance." Sonic Butterfly King's face did not change during his speech. He smiled.
Huangfu Jing ignored him and stepped away.
Sonic Butterfly King started to step closer to tell her something else, but Han Sen walked in front of him and said, "My friend told you she isn't interested in selling it. Please ask someone else."
Sonic Butterfly King's expression turned to stone. "How dare you interrupt my talk with her?"
Han Sen shrugged silently. He moved to the registry booth and revealed his own Jade Drum.
"Another Jade Drum!" Everyone in the base was shocked. No one could have expected that two Jade Drums would be found on the same day.
Sonic Butterfly King was flabbergasted. He did not expect Han Sen to have a white Jade Drum, as well.
The workers looked very surprised. They completed the registration for Han Sen, indicating it now officially belonged to him.
"Are you selling your Jade Drum? What I promised her will still apply to you, if you are willing to engage in such a transaction." Sonic Butterfly King looked right at Han Sen when he spoke.
Han Sen ignored him, which prompted Stephen to follow up. He said, "Friend, if you are selling the Jade Drum, I will pay a high price and keep you safe. You can name your price. Anything you wish."
"Sorry, but I have made no plans to sell it," Han Sen answered, rejecting his offer.
Sonic Butterfly King looked gloomy, but before he said anything further, his eyes opened wide. He saw Han Sen bring out another Jade Drum.
This Jade Drum looked very strange. There were some red symbols across it, and it looked very different from the average Jade Drum.
"It's a... another Jade Drum... How is that possible?!"
"D*mn! It looks like they are together. They found three Jade Drums. Did they find a special Jade Drum mine?"
"This luck is truly crazy. They have managed to obtain three Jade Drums."
"That third Jade Drum looks wrong, though. It's different than a normal one. It cannot be a mutant one, can it?"
"If it is a mutant Jade Drum, then it will be worth a lot. We know that normal Jade Drums can become King class, but a mutant Jade Drum might go even higher."
"That is extremely lucky. It is too lucky. I'm sure such luck will result in a disaster for them shortly. They look low-level, but they have each earned a Jade Drum. Oof. They are very dead."
"That is not luck! That is pure danger."

As everyone discussed this, Stephen and Sonic Butterfly King stared at the Blood Scorpion Jade Drum, seething with greed. They didn't even blink. The mutant Jade Drum was so exceptionally rare that it wasn't seen more than once every ten thousand years. They could have been items that were higher than King class. Even King class people treated them like treasures.
"I am sorry, sir. According to the rules of the Thousand Treasures, every creature can only take one Drum with them. You have already registered one..." the worker said to Han Sen.
"I know. This Drum isn't mine. It belongs to my daughter." Han Sen pointed at Bao'er, and then he passed her the Blood Scorpion Jade Drum.
"Then, we will have to see her play it," the worker said, clearly not believing Han Sen. The worker looked back and forth between Bao'er and the Jade Drum.
"Does she have to hit the Drum here?" Han Sen asked.
"Yes. Those are the rules." The worker nodded with absolute certainty.

In a deep night, I am riding with my horse without any companions. I was lost in the woods. I looked everywhere but I can't recognize anything familiar. I saw a trail of flowers with the help of my lamp. I followed it, I am surprised of what I saw. And I think what I've seen is also surprised.  I saw a beautiful maiden with a crown. Is she a princess? I
 need to know.
"What's your name?", I softly asked. She did not answer. She gave me a look full of angriness. Unreasonably, my horse  ran away but I don't care. I need to know the maiden and ask to help me get out of here. I tried to speak again but she casted a spell on me. She casted spells and it hit me. I felt pain and I thought my body was paralyzed. She approached me with a nasty smile engraved on her face. She waved her hand once again. I floated to the air as if someone was lifting me up. I can't move, I can't speak, I can't fight. I just closed my eyes accepting my death. A few minutes later I am still. I didn't felt anything. I didn't felt any pain. I opened my eyes and looked at my surrounding. I saw myself lying on a luxurious bed. Surrounded with a beautiful wall. I am in a beautiful room with beautiful things. I stood up and looked at my window. I saw a beautiful garden outside unlike what I saw a few minutes ago. It was a dream! What a dream! My door opened and turned to look.
" Your Highness, I am sorry for entering without knocking but the King wants to see you. He also called for Prince Stephen and Princess Aliah. He said it is urgent.", a worker at the castle told me. She went out of the room after sending me that message. I also went to the Great Hall where father is. I saw my elder  brother Stephen and my younger sister Aliah already there. The King, sitting in a golden throne looking ill. 
"I'm sorry to bother the three of you. Children, I am getting old and ill, I want to have a glimpse, atleast, of each of your child before I dissapear." He said as he looked at the three of us. No one spoke and an awkward silence happened. Suddenly, Princess Aliah spoke, "But father, what if we don't want to? I can't just find and marry another prince."
"Are you disobeying your father? Maybe  that will be my last wish. I will be very sad if I die not even touching your children. That's why I am telling it now. I am not saying each of you to marry now. Who knows when will I die?", replied father.
" Why are you rushing everything father?", asked Stephen. "You can just be positive and enjoy. "
How can I enjoy? I will enjoy if I had an ordinary life. Wandering around with my friends, but what can I do? I am born to be a king."
We laughed and King too. But sadness crossed on his face again. "Atleast try to find a way to grant my wish." He felt pain and went to his room to rest.
"Father is getting old indeed. Try to do what he want", I said to the two.
" Prince Sarish, yes it's true, but it's impossible for me to get a prince now after what I've done", Princess Aliah said.
"I guess. Telling their weaknesses and laughing at their failure of the challenges you gave them.", Prince Stephen joined the conversation.
We all laughed. We had our breakfast and I went back to my room. I laid on my bed, suddenly, I remembered my dream.
" What a strange dream"...

“This is aristocracy!” The three simple words hung over the classroom.

Unconsciously Jin Tao had sat a little straighter and a twinkle invaded his eyes, stirred by the exciting speech. It was a sentiment shared by almost all in attendance.

Wu Junyi’s hard expression had softened perceptibly, and beside him Jin Yan’s breath had quickened to match her flushed face.

Tang Mi’s jade green eyes shone. Beside her sat Zhou Qianlin, and though her expression was unchanged, her heart was beating with excitement.

“Before the eighteenth century of the Former Era, nobles were still an integral part of society. They were important. Even today the older families protect and pass on their titles of nobility, and grant them to subsequent generations. When the nobility became the common citizenry, the bourgeoisie didn’t rise up, didn’t rail against their culture. On the contrary they sent their sons and daughters to finishing schools in the hopes of becoming aristocrats themselves. They bought titles, figures and insignia’s, anything they could to inherit the mantle of ‘noble’. The reason why the noble institution has continued until today is because it has earned the approval of the people. Because the people believe that the noble spirit represents a certain honor… A certain dignity.”

“In the old days battles were all more or less the same; on the field they were enemies. Back home they were neighbors. Looking back on them now people see these fights like schoolyard scuffles.”

“Long ago in the former era a king died. Both his grandson, Henry, and his sister’s son Stephen thought they were entitled to the throne of England. Stephen had already been in the country when the king passed, so he was first to arrive. He rushed forth to claim the throne as his own. Henry, meanwhile, was on the mainland and upon hearing the news grew resentful. So he raised an army of mercenaries to confront Stephen. But Henry was young, inexperienced, and he deployed his troops without the proper planning or strategy. His mercenary army arrived from afar to land on his native shores, and disembarked to find that he had spent all of his money. Their food, too, was gone. What was he to do? It was then he came up with something a normal citizen couldn’t; he wrote to his adversary Stephen begging for aid. I have embarked on an expedition, he claimed, but have failed to bring the proper provisions. I ask you to send financial assistance so that I might disperse the mercenaries and send them home. Surprisingly, Stephen acquiesced and sent his second-cousin some funds. And in response Henry later began a second bid for the throne.”

As he related the story Lan Jue had returned to his normal, soft-spoken persona. A small smile was on his face, and as he continued he had the attention of every ear in the hall.

“Someone offers you financial assistance, and you return the favor by trying to murder them. Most would call this ungrateful at the very least, but nobles believe that affording your enemies a measure of leniency is a matter of course. If competition is required, then there will be competition. And so a few years later Henry lead his armies against Stephen in a second go. At this point he had grown older, wise, and this resulted in Stephen’s defeat. He had won his victory, but the result was quite interesting. The two signed a treaty wherein they agreed Stephen would remain upon the throne, but Henry would become his successor. Not long after Stephen succumbed to age and Henry became king. To the average man earning only a successor’s title after winning such a difficult victory hardly seems worth it. But this is precisely the spirit of nobility. Henry use the code of aristocracy to repay Stephen for his earlier leniency.”

Lan Jue paused as though lost in thought. Gradually the look in his eyes grew more serious. “In regards to the noble spirit there is yet another story that makes me shiver, an unforgettable tale. It was back when I was still a student, a story my own professor told me. Today I’ll tell it to you.”

“In the former era mankind had produced a massive cruise ship. They christened it the Titanic.”

“The name Titanic had been borrowed from Greek mythology, referring to the giants called Titans. The Titans wished to wage war against the god Zeus on behalf of the mysterious forces of nature. They were ultimately defeated, and banished to the depths of the Atlantic ocean, buried deeper than the eighteenth level of hell itself. Thus it was people said the name ‘Titanic’ was poorly chosen, ominous, and would invite catastrophe.”

“And as predicted, the ship sank to the bottom of the sea in an accident.”

At the mention of Zeus, Zhou Qianlin inadvertently raised her head. Her eyes found Lan Jue’s looking directly back at her.

Lan Jue continued. “But the difference between this great ship and the titans of lore was that the only thing that sunk was it’s steel.. it’s bolts… it’s people. It’s spirit was never conquered. That is to say that the titanic sunk, taking with it the lives of one thousand five hundred passengers. But the invincible spirit of human civilization remained. Unsinkable.”

Lan Jue’s voice grew louder as he pressed on.

“As the boat sank eight musicians calmly stood upon the deck, playing their instruments. Those notes embodied the dignity and honor of the human spirit, refusing to bow it’s head to the ruthless acts of nature. Just as the famous writer Hemmingway wrote in his book The Old Man and the Sea: A man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated. The sharks following the old man could gnaw on the fish lashed to his boat until there was nothing but bone, but they couldn’t gnaw the sailor’s undaunted spirit. This was the burning fire of the inner spirit, the will of man, that not even the entire ocean could extinguish.”

“Even many years later people still laud the actions of those musicians and sailors. How could they have so much courage when they faced drowning in the brine? How is it they could adhere to their duties when death lay in those tumultuous waters? How is it they could retain the noble sentiment to wait until all the women and children had filled the lifeboats before thinking of themselves? Statistics state that seventy-six percent of the sailors died in the accident, a ratio that outstripped the first, second and third class passenger deaths combined. The sailors even had evacuation preference over the passengers – but they gave their opportunity to others. They took on that hopelessness for themselves. Nor was it one, or two sailors who did this. All nine hundred staff, including sailors, waiters, firemen and even the cook all chose to stay behind; so many people, willing to do what they did. As we think on it today, this sort of towering spirit of humanity is not unlike what they said about the sinking of that great ship. It is almost unbelievable.”


Skyfire Avenue is a street that is 2048 meters long. There are 168 stores here, and each of the store owners is an extremely powerful adept. The Avenue does not permit any vehicles or any robots to pass through it, much less mecha. Even the patrolling police must move about on foot. This is because this is a street for pedestrians, a lane for nobles, hidden away within this high technology world.
