Early Years

Google began in January 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were both PhD students at Stanford University in Stanford, California.[18] The project initially involved an unofficial "third founder", Scott Hassan, the original lead programmer who wrote much of the code for the original Google Search engine, but he left before Google was officially founded as a company;[19][20] Hassan went on to pursue a career in robotics and founded the company Willow Garage in 2006.[21][22]

While conventional search engines ranked results by counting how many times the search terms appeared on the page, they theorized about a better system that analyzed the relationships among websites.[23] They called this algorithm PageRank; it determined a website's relevance by the number of pages, and the importance of those pages that linked back to the original site.[24][25] Page told his ideas to Hassan, who began writing the code to implement Page's ideas.[19]

Page and Brin originally nicknamed the new search engine "BackRub", because the system checked backlinks to estimate the importance of a site.[26][27][28] Hassan as well as Alan Steremberg were cited by Page and Brin as being critical to the development of Google. Rajeev Motwani and Terry Winograd later co-authored with Page and Brin the first paper about the project, describing PageRank and the initial prototype of the Google search engine, published in 1998. Héctor García-Molina and Jeff Ullman were also cited as contributors to the project.[29] PageRank was influenced by a similar page-ranking and site-scoring algorithm earlier used for RankDex, developed by Robin Li in 1996, with Larry Page's PageRank patent including a citation to Li's earlier RankDex patent; Li later went on to create the Chinese search engine Baidu.[30][31][32]

Eventually, they changed the name to Google; the name of the search engine originated from a misspelling of the word "googol",[33][34] the number 1 followed by 100 zeros, which was picked to signify that the search engine was intended to provide large quantities of information.[35]

The domain name for Google was registered on September 15, 1997,[37] and the company was incorporated on September 4, 1998. It was based in the garage of a friend (Susan Wojcicki[18]) in Menlo Park, California. Craig Silverstein, a fellow PhD student at Stanford, was hired as the first employee.[18][38][39]

Upon seeing customers walking into the door, a waiter wearing a white shirt and a black bow tie immediately greeted them. Before he even managed to open his mouth, Zhang Lisheng who followed the girls into the restaurant asked first in French, "Is there any table available?"
"Of course, Sir! Miss Guo has already made a booking." The waiter was dumbfounded in a not obvious manner for a moment before flashing a smile that revealed his eight white teeth. Then, he proceeded to take the three of them to an empty table and handed them the menu.
"I'm very hungry but French cuisine is not that filling…" Zhang Lisheng took the menu and muttered to himself. Then, he ordered three full course meals in French and opened two expensive aged wines before taking out a hundred dollar bill. "Give me another five cans of iced Coke and the rest is your tip, thank you."
Working in a French restaurant in Silicon Valley, the waiter would always come across some bizarre guests, so the waiter silently took the money and turned his gaze onto Guo Caiying and Ai Chuhe. "Is there anything the two ladies need?"

George Pickens still showed up even though Zeke wasn't looking at those contracts anymore. Mr. Atkins went to the living room with him and they turned on the draft so they could watch. The twins followed them, while Noah and I stayed with his mom to watch Zeke's interview with Mr. Cameron. 
Once everything was set, Mr. Cameron sat at angle from Zeke and the camera began to roll. He grinned at the camera and did his introduction before facing Zeke. "First off, Zeke, I would like to congratulate you on such an exciting season of high school baseball. You finished your high school career with a championship under your belt. How does that make you feel?"

Zeke smiled. "It was a dream come true. What made it even more special though, is that I was able to accomplish this with the help of all four of my brothers."

Noah nudged me. 
"Yes, your brothers have been showing some success on the field as well. Does that drive you to do better?" Mr. Cameron asked. 
Zeke nodded. "It does. There is no better competition than your own family. I know them and they know me. We push one another to keep striving for new heights."

"Do you think they can repeat another CIF championship after you leave?"

"Without a doubt." Zeke nodded confidently. "Not just because I have faith in my brothers, but also in the teammates I leave behind. There are juniors who are ready to step up and take over. The sophomores are also waiting for their chance to shine."

"That's reassuring to your coach, I'm sure." Mr. Cameron said. "But I'm also positive that the hole you leave behind will be significant. Your legacy at Watsonville High has been incredible to follow. Let's talk about this next step you plan to take."

"Stanford University." Zeke said with pride. 
"Yes, we covered the signing ceremony when you had made your commitment. However, it's not uncommon for college-bound players to change their mind if they get drafted early. We saw earlier some team representatives asking you about your future and your willingness to go pro. Can you tell us a little more about your decision?"

Zeke slowly nodded. "I was impressed and surprised by how many people came to see me today. If I had this kind of attention last year, I probably would have stuck with my original plan to go pro after high school. As for why I'm choosing to stick with Stanford, there are a lot of reasons that come with that."

"Such as?"

"Well, first off, I'm not about the money. There might have been a time, just a few months ago, where being a pick in the first or second round would be life changing for me."

"And why is that?"

"Because that was my dream. Actually, it's almost every player's dream to get picked early and sign a big contract."

"At what point did you change your mind?"

Zeke smiled. "It was gradual, not very sudden. First, my parents. They really pushed for me to visit some colleges. Even though the season had started and we were nearing to graduation, I didn't think I would change my mind. My first visit was to Stanford and it was eye-opening. There are players not even that much older than me, yet they can hit the ball yards further."

"And that scared you?"

Zeke shook his head. "No. It inspired me. This would be my future. Even if I was drafted, I'd be on some minor league team learning how to improve my play there instead of at a college. Why not use that time at college to improve my play and get an education? Two birds with one stone."

"You don't think you'll have to spend too much time in the minors even after college?"

Zeke's friendly smile turned into a cocky grin. "It won't be a long stay."

Mr. Cameron laughed. "By the sight of how many people came by to talk to you today, I believe it. My next question for you is: are you planning on staying at Stanford for all four years?"

"No. I'll be done before then." Zeke told him. 
"Done? Done with what?" Even Mr. Cameron was confused along with me and Noah. Mrs. Atkins just kept smiling at her son. 
"Done with my degree." Zeke replied. "I've spoken with my academic counselor there and have already planned out an accelerated program."

"Wow. Does Coach Leroy know about your plans?"

He nodded. "Yes. We have had a conversation of what he expects out of me, and what I expect out of the program. I'm very thankful for this opportunity. I plan to show my appreciation by bringing home a College World Series ring."

Mr. Cameron was now more than surprised. He paused for a second before finding the words. "I'm impressed with your goals that you have set for yourself. With Coach Leroy, Bradley Thompson, and the returning seniors, I'm sure you guys will have a good shot at the championship. I'll be rooting for ya."
"Thank you." Zeke simply nodded after making such a claim. 
Mr. Cameron turned to the camera directly. "There you have it folks. Zeke Atkins won't be going pro this year, but don't rule him out two years from now. Until then, be sure to catch him in action at Stanford University."

The camera turned off and the guy behind it gave the thumbs up. 
Mr. Cameron sighed with relief. "Man, you really threw me for a curve there, Zeke. I didn't know you had your academic life already planned out. Does that mean you're taking some summer classes?"

"Just a few easy ones online." Zeke answered. "Have to get a head start if I want to be done in two years." He looked to his mom. "Maybe Noah and Jake can do a summer class too, like you suggested before."

Mrs. Atkins beamed. "I've been looking into it." She glanced down at us. "Do you boys want to rethink about taking a summer class?"

I looked at Noah. 
Noah thought about it. "I mean...it can't be math since we aren't on the same level. I told Jake before that getting ahead in Spanish wouldn't be such a bad idea. Is that allowed?"

Mrs. Atkins nodded. "I'm sure it'll count if we find the right class in the school district. I'll try get you two in. It probably won't be online though, like Zeke's."

Noah was hesitant. "Well...we still have softball, Mom."

"Softball..?" Mr. Cameron interrupted. 
Noah nodded. "Yea. Jake and I 'missed' travel ball tryouts. So we're going to play in an adult softball league. Zeke's joining too."

Mr. Cameron's eyes widened. "What..?" He stared around Zeke in disbelief. "You're going to prepare for college ball by playing in a softball league? Are you taking some time off to give your body a rest?"

Zeke opened his mouth to answer him, but was cut off by loud screaming in the next room over. Apparently the twins were excited. It wasn't long before they started chanting, "Zeke! Zeke! Zeke! Zeke! Zeke! Zeke!"

Mr. Cameron laughed. "I'm guessing you were selected early."

A great man once said: "When I cut my finger, is a tragedy... When you fall into a sewer and die, is a comedy." In this trail of thought, one might decide to be a sadist to their character and play it for laughs.

Not saying that angle won't work or anything. After all, Charlie Chaplin didn't get famous for no reason.

What I'm trying to say is that comedy is derived from the absurd. Things that don't normally happen is happening and no common sense is needed for the fictional characters involved since people being dumb is funny in its own right. I mean, go ask Disney for advice on writing overly dumb characters who couldn't possibly exist in real life at all.

This doesn't mean that a pure comedy needs to be all laughs though. It is becoming strangely more common to weave plot threads together in order to make even more absurd scenarios for the characters involved. I remember watching an Anime called 'Gamers!' about a group of teenagers gradually falling into the rabbit hole of misunderstandings since they wouldn't outright ask each other anything.

It was to the point that Otaku online dubbed it with the meme-like name of 'Misunderstandings: The Anime' in the face of how complicated the story was becoming because of what was happening on screen.

Just me writing the word 'absurd' twice should be enough for those reading this to understand that making it 'out there' is what's comical. Even 'Kaguya Sama- Love Is War' derived its comedy from the absurd humour that is what WOULD happen when two geniuses won't give up in trying to win over the other in their battle of over-the-top scheming.

Reactions that are so over-the-top they are comical in itself are also common to comedies. Even in those fictions that try to balance their comedy with heavier moments that were built to be tear jerkers.

However, to actually be able to overcome the hurdle of making the sadder moments impact instead of making the reader laugh, what is most needed is the inclusion of something 'mundane' in a character's life which can be subverted. There is a reason The Simpson's and other comedy tv shows go back to the status quo after a joke has ended, it is because seeing something mundane turn hilarious is subversive.

And what is comedy if not a subversion of what we are expecting? The reason everything used to laugh in high school when someone fell after another guy pulled his chair before he sat is because something even as mundane as 'sitting' didn't follow the tradition, turning into something they didn't expect.

A long comedy story needs this sense of returning to the status quo even if it has changed a little after the previous punchline. You can't always throw in punchlines without proper build up to it.

There needs to be at least some time for the characters to take in an exciting incident before the next one comes, and that is especially true when it comes to punchlines. It's just how comedy works.

Now you may be thinking of writing a character who has some funny joke that consistently happens in the story. Maybe your character keeps on falling asleep in climactic moments or maybe your comic relief has a catchy catchphrase that he always NEEDS to say.

In the case of the latter: Don't... Just don't...

As for the former, new scenarios for the same joke can lead into an even bigger joke. Bonus points if whatever the character's main joke is actually coincides with some sort of characterisation.

You can have a guy who gets angry all the time have to ACTUALLY go to anger management courses or maybe the guy who falls asleep just doesn't get any most the time due to insomnia. I know something so 'real' shouldn't be funny, but remember my earlier advice, something 'mundane' can ground the story.

To have a higher purpose than just the comedy happening itself, this sense of realism is required and can't be forgotten if you want to make stories that can have a higher impact on the audience.

Generally, you can go berserk with this kind of story since any joke is acceptable as long as they don't are not moral ambiguous and don't go at the expense of a certain group of your audience. I mean, 9/11 jokes may seem funny but we've already got to the point that the terrorism itself is not to be joked about.

On a side note: Why is it that Kyoto Animation burning down is a tragedy but people falling off buildings in 9/11 is funny? I remember a guy even adding cartoon sound to a video of people falling...

Sorry, back to the topic at hand. Your sense of humour is your own, but be sure to be sensitive to the people around you and not be a sadistic bully who takes pleasure in the suffering of others.

This is a story I worked on ages ago that has been refined and edited by adding foreshadowing to events while also simplifying the power system better than before. This story can be considered a prequel to An Adventure Beyond Greatness as it takes place years prior to the events of that story.

Short Synopsis:
After retiring from the battlefield, my life became empty and lifeless. The regrets of my past haunt me in my sleep. Then a change occurred, a King from another world summoned me to fight for his kingdom, but I died even before I could give him my answer. Now, after a fake God allowed me to reincarnate (albeit imperfectly) with my memories intact, into a world filled with magic and swords.

Long Synopsis:
This is about a flawed protagonist who only knew to rely on others and not socialise who gets a second chance to change himself in order to live the life he aimed for in his past life. The narrator isn’t exactly trustworthy since it is purely in his bias perspective while other perspectives given by others fill in the blanks that he either leaves out or twists to suit the situation.

The story itself can be considered a parody of Isekai’s classic tropes which are given a sense of reality as time goes by. As there exists no ‘Demon Lord’, there is also no black and white, only characters opinions and counter-opinions throughout the story.

Emma opened her cellphone and tried to research on the internet about what Haoran was saying just now. Moon bounce? What's that?
The girl furrowed her brows as she read carefully what she found online.
"Maybe this will work," Emma murmured softly. "So, Moon Bounce is usually done as a hobby by people who like sending radio waves to the Moon, and the Moon's surface reflecting the waves back, but it's actually a one-way communication. It's like people playing squash with the wall. But, if we consistently sent radio messages to these specific coordinates on the Moon, maybe whoever was in there will begin to pay attention and reply to us. And this way, we'll not attract other people's attention because many people do Moon Bounce activities for fun."
Haoran looked at Emma with an enthusiastic expression. "You're right! But just in case, we should send radio messages to two other different coordinates on the Moon at the same time. We can find random locations on the Moon and use their selenographic coordinates as decoys. Others will think we're just doing an experiment."
"That's a good idea." Emma continued reading more details online about Moon Bounce and narrowed her eyes. She made rough calculations and plans in her head and said, "We can only do this at particular times when the angle and position are ideal for us to bounce radio waves to those specific coordinates consistently. Maybe we'll have to stay up really late, or we can only do it on weekends."
"That's right. Still, it'll be fun, I'm sure. We can have a slumber party at my home and do it." Haoran looked very excited at the possibility. "I can build the antenna and get all the equipment needed for the project!"
"But, what's most important is we have to check the actual location of these coordinates that my father left me," Emma added. "Otherwise, we won't be able to find the correct timing."
Over time, only 59% of the Moon's surface was visible to humans on earth, the opposite side was hidden and referred to by people as "The Dark Side of the Moon" because it never faced the Earth. 
Since the Moon and the Earth were both rotating in their axis, their position would change all the time. And since the Moon also orbited the Earth, they must time it properly if they wanted to send a radio message to a specific location on the Moon's surface. The coordinates Emma��s father had left might be located on the other side of the Moon, so they needed to bounce their message precisely at the right time. This was what Emma meant.
"Let's do it once we're back home. I'll find ways to get the coordinates checked and make plans," Haoran said. 
"While we're trying this way, I'll also study computer science and try to understand ways to hack into satellites like Goose, in case Plan A doesn't work," Emma said, typing a reminder on her phone. "We also have to slowly gain access to SpaceLab."
Haoran nodded. "You're right. Wow, you have plans A, B and C, apparently."
"I know," Emma said. "I wouldn't be able to do it without your help, though."
"We'll definitely need an adequate radio set and antenna. I can work on that. For computer science, there are plenty of courses or programs where you can enroll in. But for hacking... we can have Goose teach you. I can pay for her to be your mentor." Seeing Emma about to object, Haoran hurriedly added. "Let's just say I'm investing in you because you're a genius. Later, when you're good at it, you can help me do lots of things. So this isn't a free aid. It's an investment on my side. Remember, I want to be a businessman like my father."
It was only after that, reluctantly Emma nodded and smiled faintly. "In that case, I'll accept it."
"Good, I'll slowly get access to SpaceLab with my father's position, but we need time. I don't want to make my father suspicious if I don't play it smoothly. I'll show him I'm very interested in the space program by doing the Moon Bounce project. Later, after I graduated from high school, I'll start following my father and be his intern to gain his trust. Slowly, I'll pave my way there."
"Ah... that's right," Emma nodded. "But first, we have to put you in Class 3A, then you have to maintain your good grades to enter a top university."
"My father will like you," Haoran said suddenly with a big smile. "He'll think you changed me. Like I now finally have a purpose in life."
Emma nodded. "Don't worry. I won't tell your father that your life's goal is to get rid of him. I'll be your cover. We'll let him think you changed for me."
"Thank you," Haoran said quietly. His lips curved up in a thin smile. He liked how Emma understood him so well now. 
The two stared at each other for a few moments with knowing smiles. Haoran had long decided to take revenge and destroy his father by turning himself around, so he could inherit his father's wealth and business. Then, once everything was in his hands, he'd get rid of his father and the wife whom Haoran deeply hated. 
In order to do that, he needed to study hard and get his life together first. He had to be patient and wait until he got enough power and influence. Haoran had even made plans for the next six years. His goal was to snatch everything from his father by the time he was 25.
Meanwhile, Emma had her own goal to find her parents. She knew that she had to be careful in her search. Emma couldn't let their existence be known by people from Earth. She had to be patient and do things properly for it would take some time before she could find them. Emma had waited for thirteen years. She could certainly wait for a few more.
Emma was grateful that she met Haoran at the right time and place. They had different goals, but their objectives, just like their paths, crossed. Since Haoran was very kind to her, Emma decided to trust him and let him be on her team to find her parents.
"I'm glad we have an agreement," Emma said. "Thank you for all your help."
"The pleasure is mine, Stardust," Haoran said. "Actually, ever since I met you, my life has become more exciting! So, Thank YOU!"
Emma nodded. After writing down more notes on her cellphone, she then excused herself. "I'll be sleeping now. See you tomorrow morning."
Haoran checked at his watch and gasped in surprise. "It's already 2 AM. Why don't you just sleep here?"
"Gosh, Haoran, how far do you think my room is? I'll just take the elevator down," Emma scowled, hitting his shoulder.
Haoran laughed and stood up to open the door for Emma.
"I'm just kidding," said Haoran.
Emma frowned and walked toward the elevator.
"See you tomorrow," Emma said, waving.

Ting went online and searched how to create a startup company. What he found was that he needed to go in person and have the required documents to create his company. He would be giving these documents to the government, or the civil servants. 

After a few hours, he finished writing up the necessary documents that he needed. He found the address given for his area and left his apartment complex. From the busy streets he hailed a taxi and gave the driver an address.

After about 30 minutes or so he arrived at the building that the website gave him to create an company. Ting Wo saw that it was a relatively new building as everything inside was also very neat and clean. Carpet covered the floor and the place had an air of a office.

Many security guards were on duty as this building was a part of the government services. The lobby was pretty open there were many youths and older men could be seen sitting down and talking to each other.

Most likely about their business related content. The building was lit up well and had a decent vibe to it.

Ting didn't know where to go so he could only ask something passing by. When he thought about asking he found a middle aged lady, so he decide he would ask her.

"Excuse me, I'm here to register a company. Do you know where I do that is?"

"Oh you're also starting a company? I've seen many young youths create companies. Unfortunately, they weren't successful." The lady said. "But, nearly every new company starts out the same. You need to work hard in order to be successful. To register a company you need to see that woman over there."

"Good luck lad." She said as she walked to the exit.

"Thanks!" Ting Wo thanked her and walked towards the marble counter. Apparently this is where you register a company. He had to wait in line as there was about 6 people waiting in line with papers in hand. The same went for Ting, as he held the documents for registering his company.

After what felt like 30 minutes it was finally Ting's turn.

"You're registering a company?" The woman said. On her suit was a name tag that told him her name was Dai Chung.

"Yes, here is the documents I need to register the company.

"Alright, It won't take too long." She said.

After 10 minutes she finished inputting the information to the computer. She kept the documents and said "We'll keep a copy of theses." She put them into a photo copier to the side and had it print out a copy of the papers. After it was done she handed back the original to Ting and said you're good to go.

Ting went out of the building and realized that he needed a product for his company. His company will be about games for the time being and he thought about expanding it into the anti virus software area. However, that will be for the future as he now needs to think of what to do now.

Ting Wo hailed a taxi and told the driver his apartments address. As he was in the taxi he thought about what he needed to do next. As he thought about it he arrived to his apartment. As Ting walked up the stairs he suddenly had an idea.

"Let's see if there is a game design course!" Ting called up his system when he entered his apartment room. He entered the learning dimension and walked up to the interface on the table. He searched up a game design course and found one.

He found a game design course, however it was just the beginner course. He found that in order to enroll into the Intermediate course he needed the prerequisite Game Design Beginner Course. And the same also goes for the advanced course. For the advanced he needed the intermediate.

"How much will it all cost." Ting's heart ached when he thought about all the System Credits he needed to learn the courses.

Ting went to check if there were any system missions related to taking the game design course so he would at least earn something back.

Unfortunately for Ting he couldn't find any missions for taking the game design course. Ting checked his schedule to find if there was anything that he needed to attend and found that there wasn't. Ting slightly bit his lower lip and pressed the enroll button on the interface to enroll into the course.

["700 System Credits have been deducted from your balance."]

["You have successfully enrolled into the Beginner Game Design course."]

"If only it was this easy to learn during university." Ting sighed as he thought of how easy it was to learn in the learning dimensions.

After a week of his course, he had learned the basics of game design. It was quite the experience for Ting because it was his first time finding out how hard it was to design a well thought out game.

Ting now needed to find out what kind of game he wanted to create. He thought about how expensive it would cost if he wanted to create a MMORPG game because he could buy the bits and pieces he needed from his system shop. In his system shop was more sophisticated and more advanced parts.

Theses parts were more powerful than what everyone had on earth. However for Ting it costed a heft amount of System Credits. Ting was eager to know what upgrading the Hacker System will give him. However upgrading the system would obviously come at a later time. Right now, Ting needed to find out what would be a good game for consumers.

Ting thought about it for a good hour, but, couldn't get any ideas. Therefore he went online and researched the trends of the gaming industry. He found that it was leaning more towards the virtual reality devices. However, earth wasn't advanced enough to get fully immersive virtual reality devices as of yet.

For Ting, he couldn't enter the virtual reality sector yet. However, he knew that he could introduce it with help of his system. So until then, he decided the game would be a single player mobile game. As Ting was researching mobiles games, an light bulb suddenly appeared over his head. Ting had an idea, how about a game where you play as a King and you decide the fates of the people from your kingdom.

The game is played by how long you last. You needed to make good decisions and if you choose the bad situations. Some event will take place and you will lose some citizens. Ting thought that it was a pretty neat idea. So he decided to program it, because he had already learned how to create GUI's he didn't need to take the course again.

Ting started coding and creating the game. He created the events and buttons and a account login. Ting bought a server from the system shop. The server will be holding the data for the game. The server will store the users accounts. This game would take up a lot of time. Therefore he put his computer into his storage space and traveled to the learning dimension. He took out his computer and put it on a spare desk for him to work on the game.

But, before he started he called his mom. Ting told her that he was doing fine, and avoided telling her that he got expelled from his university. If he told her right now without anything to comfort her, she might break down into tears. Therefore, he waited for until he had a better position to tell her. He decided to tell his mom just before he releases his game into the mobile market. He would allow his mom to play it, and let her try to find any bugs.

After finishing the call, he decided to get to work.
