Causing immediate excitement among Mrs. Bennet and her five daughters, Mr. Bingley, a wealthy young gentleman, has rented a nearby country estate, Netherfield. He arrives in town accompanied by his fashionable sister and his good friend, Mr. Darcy. While Bingley is well-received in the community, Darcy begins his acquaintance with smug condescension and proud distaste for all the “country” people. Bingley and Jane Bennet begin to grow close despite Mrs. Bennet’s embarrassing interference and the opposition of Bingley’s sister, who considers Jane socially inferior. Elizabeth is stung by Darcy’s haughty rejection of her at a local dance and decides to match his coldness with her own wit.

Elizabeth begins a friendship with Mr. Wickham, a militia officer who has a history with Darcy. Wickham claims that Darcy seriously mistreated him. Elizabeth immediately seizes upon this information as another reason to hate Darcy. Ironically, but unbeknownst to her, Darcy finds himself gradually drawn to Elizabeth.
Just as Bingley appears to be on the point of proposing marriage to Jane, he moves away from Netherfield, leaving Jane confused and upset. Elizabeth is convinced that Bingley’s sister has conspired with Darcy to separate Jane and Bingley.

Mr. Collins, a distant relative of the Bennets, makes an unexpected visit. He is a recently ordained clergyman employed by the wealthy Lady Catherine de Bourgh. On his way to visit his patron, Collins makes a visit, intending to find a wife from among the Bennet sisters. At first, he pursues Jane; however, when Mrs. Bennet mentions she is involved with Mr. Bingley, he turns to Elizabeth. He soon proposes marriage to Elizabeth, who refuses him, much to her mother’s distress. Collins quickly recovers and proposes to Elizabeth’s close friend, Charlotte Lucas, who immediately accepts him. Their marriage takes place soon after.

In the spring, Elizabeth joins Charlotte and Mr. Collins at his parish in Kent. The parish is adjacent to Rosings Park, the grand manor of Mr. Darcy’s aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, where Elizabeth is frequently invited. While calling on Lady Catherine, Mr. Darcy encounters Elizabeth. She discovers from Darcy’s cousin that it was he who separated Bingley and Jane, as she suspected. Soon after, Darcy admits his love of Elizabeth and proposes to her. Elizabeth refuses him. When he asks why she should refuse him, she confronts him with his sabotage of Bingley’s relationship with Jane and his history with Wickham. Darcy responds with a long letter justifying his actions.

Thus, everything is set up to bring to conclusion the various love affairs—happily, or perhaps unhappily. Whatever the various resolutions, Darcy, Bingley, Jane, Elizabeth, as well as others, will need to overcome their pride and prejudices if they are to find love in the midst of these uncertain and complex relationships.

It was almost 10 o'clock. As soon as Lu Jia'er returned home, Amy came out to greet her. 
Over time Lu Jia'er felt that it was really wonderful to have Amy, every time she experienced similiar situations. Amy had added a new warmth to the home. Just as the slogan goes, it is not dark when you get home anymore, he or she is waiting for you.
"Did Su Han go out?" Lu Jia'er asked Amy when she saw that Su Han's room was not lit. 
"Yes, she says that this beauty has a date!" Amy replied.
"This beauty has a date!" Lu Jia'er's eyes became meaningful.
"Professor Lu, have you just had a date?" Amy blinked at Lu Jia'er and asked.
"No, I have freed the pigeon for someone today!" Lu Jia'er smiled.
"Free the pigeon? It's so romantic!" Amy couldn't help but praise.
Although AI is very powerful, it does not have a human mindset. There will be inevitably some bugs in the phrases it uses. 
Lu Jia'er reached out and touched Amy, as she said with a smile, "Go prepare water for my bath!"
"Yes, ma'am!" Amy turned round and ran toward the bathroom.
After a comfortable bath, Lu Jia'er dried her hair with a blow dryer and came out in a bathrobe  just as Su Han came back. Lu Jia'er could tell from her expression that the date this evening was not very pleasant even without listening to her inner voice.
"Amy, give me a glass of ice water!" Su Han yelled instantly as she put down her bag.
Amy immediately went to the kitchen to pour ice water for Su Han. "Who was it that made you so resentful after a date!" Lu Jia'er glanced at her and said. 
"I am more than resentful. I want to kill someone!" Su Han gnashed her teeth and said.
Amy, holding a glass of water, walked over and said to Su Han, "Killing! Killing people is illegal!"
"Amy is right. Killing people is illegal!" Lu Jia'er smiled and said.
Su Han pouted, then took the glass of ice water in the hands of Amy, and gulped down more than half the amount of ice water. 
"Have you been sexually harassed?" asked Lu Jia'er.
"Yes, she almost got her way!" Su Han put down the glass and gnashed her teeth again. 
"Got her way? This is not good!" Amy said as it blinked at Su Han.
"A woman?" Lu Jia'er asked.
Anyway, she had no secrets in front of Lu Jia'er. Su Han could only nod in despair, "I thought of her as my friend, but she wanted to screw me!"
"You should have called the police!" said Lu Jia'er.
"Given that she used to help me in publication and publicity, I will let her get away with it for the time being!" Su Han said reluctantly.
"Amy says that you have a date. I thought you were dating a man!" Lu Jia'er said.
"There is no man I can date! By the way, you said that Jason has a good impression on me, but is there a bug!" Su Han picked on Lu Jia'er about the issue. 
"Not very likely. But he has been very busy recently!" Lu Jia'er understated.
Su Han pouted sadly, and then acted like a spoiled child to Amy, "Amy, I need comfort. I need a hug!"
Amy blinked for a few times, and then it went before Su Han. "Giving you a hug of love!"
After the hug, Su Han let go of Amy and tried to get a hug from Lu Jia'er. Unfortunately, she was rejected by Lu Jia'er, who had an obsession with cleanliness. "Go take a bath first!"
Su Han saw this, she could only continue holding Amy next to her as she complained to Lu Jia'er, "What a cold-blooded soul!"


This is a therapeutic romance novel that mixes psychology and science fiction.

Lu Jia'er is a professor in psychology who is able to read the minds of anyone in the world. One day, she meets a special man, a legendary genius in the IT world rumored to be ugly—Jin Xiangdong.

In fact, he's not ugly, and it's love at first sight for Lu Jia'er. This is compounded by the fact that she can't read his mind. To figure out what's so "special" about him, Lu Jia'er accepts his invitation to join an artificial intelligence research team. In her spare time, she would pursue him.

She: "Can I chase after you?"
He considers for a few seconds. "It wouldn't be easy!"
She: "That's what I call a challenge!"
He gives her a friendly reminder. "Time is precious. Don't waste it."

Turns out that he was right. Not only is he difficult to chase, but he is also mysterious.

The girl blew out a sigh and leaned back in her chair, running a hand through her long dark hair and grimacing when it got snagged by the already-tangled curls. She had eyes that were large and round and endlessly dark, thoroughly fixated on the column she was working on her computer.
The column was for their school's publication that the girl had a good reputation working as a sportswriter. She had always loved sports, next to science of course which was her first love.
"You got that article done?" Her attention was called by the gravelly voice of their lead editor, Alejandro Madrid, a senior like her and who earned the lead position not because he was the best pick—but because he's only second to the girl who was handling the sports column—the later refused to take it and he was the next pick.
He was totally aware of that and he respectfully accepts defeat against the girl. She was just the best and everyone in this school knows that. Her super pretty face was just equally balanced with how smart she was, and the inheritance she had gotten from her deceased parents. Aviona Leigh was just simply everyone's dream and at the same time their own nightmare.
"A minute," She shove a finger in the air, dismissing his attempt to pressure her, if such pressure even works. Just as she promised, after a minute she spun around her chair to face him and handed him her work.
"Good," Alejandro accepted the paper, looking down at the girl's dark eyes that always mesmerized him. Her attraction for the girl was made known when during their freshmen years, where his mad love was untamable, he foolishly hired a famous band to woo her and sent her hundreds of red roses at school, only to be rejected at once.
He felt like a total fool by then, but many followed his footsteps, only to come up with the same end—get rejected by the goddess of beauty, Aviona Leigh. The girl had high standards obviously and she simply would just not pick anyone below her league and that made Martin Chan right for her. Martin was just so rich and as gorgeous and as popular as she does.
Whether Aviona picked him as a trophy boyfriend or not, Martin certainly doesn't care, because just like Aviona, all he cared for was to satisfy his ego. Being the son of an acclaimed actor and the probably one of the richest men this country, Martin's future and fortune was secure. He was one of those babies that were born with a silver spoon on their mouth, and one of those who don't need to work there asses out just to get what they want. Martin was XU university's star player in basketball and that title gave him the right to date the most sought-after beauty in XU University, none other than Aviona Leigh.
"Alright, I'm outta here," Aviona said and stood from her chair, turn to grab her designer bag that everyone was talking about and head for the door, only to be blocked by Alejandro who was shaking his head.
"We still have a meeting a Aviona, Didn't you read the announcement or perhaps received the text I sent out to everyone in the club," Alejandro asked her, his arms was spread over the door.
"You do not boss me around Alejandro," Aviona said with arching brow, "We all know you only got the lead's position because I refused it and the only reason why I stay in the publication team is because I don't trust other students writing the sports column, God knows how the other members of this team writes garbage."
The other members of the publication team who were present only bowed their heads. They dare not defend themselves against Aviona Leigh because everyone know that was a foolish thing to do. Aviona Leigh can simply break and make you and so going against her was like, sending yourself straight to hell. In this school, Aviona Leigh is and will always be the queen, the mean queen.
"Martin plays in the basketball team and I don't want anyone writing complacent articles about him," She added with a ting disgust for the other members of the club. For Aviona, all of them were idiots and simply untalented to write.
"But—"
"No buts, just go out of my way," She cut him off and attempted to dismiss him. "If you're going to force me to stay, then perhaps I'll shall call on the school board and ask them to replace you. Let's see how your school ranking go down because of your lack of extra-curricular activities"
With her words, Alejandro was powerless. He knew how serious Aviona was with all her treats and she had gotten eight students expelled already in a span of six months—that's how influential she was at school.
"Aviona!" Someone came to get her attention. It was one of her minions, and also her teammate in their thesis, "Oh God I've been looking for you anywhere,"
"Margo, I told you my schedule for the day," She hollered at the girl's face, "If you can't memorize it then perhaps, I'll just kick you out of the team, you annoy me to the full,"
The brightness on the girl's face flared away in an instant. She had gone trough hell just to be a part of Aviona's circle and yet, Aviona had threatened her to be stripped away without justification—that easy.
"I'm sorry," Margo, Aviona's minion replied timidly, "I look for you because I have some news,"
"Don't tell me it's bad news?" Aviona warned and when she saw that's the girl's expression faltered, she added, "God! I'm not up for negative energies now. Anyway, what is it?"
"Professor Dusk commented on the research the seniors submitted last week and he mentioned that our thesis was somewhat the same with one of the intern's thesis," The girl reported and Aviona gasped with annoyance over the news.
"How dare? Who's that intern he was talking about?" She demanded right away.

In the box were books—or rather, neatly stacked magazines.
On the cover of each of these magazines was a bright yellow border with a laurel leaf pattern. All were well-kept, and arranged in the order of their published date.
Without looking, Li Du already knew the title of the publication: "National Geographic," the most well-known and widely circulated magazine in the US and around the entire world.
The box that the little bug had flown into had magazines from 2000. There were titles like "Stunning Rare Footage Reveals Elusive Snow Leopards," and "Discover Europe's Far-Flung Island Paradise."
Beyond these magazines, there was also magazines from other years: 2001, 2002, 2003. A portion of them were from 2004.
Li Du's gaze lingered on these magazines. National Geographic was a series of quality magazines. It had rich content and impactful information. Li Du had been reading it lately as he had found that such magazines could broaden one's horizons.
The magazines that he had been reading were all from various years, as they had been retrieved from the storage units. They were worthless, and so he had kept them for his own reading.
These magazines were different from those that he had previously found; their value would be greater because they were arranged in order. There would be people who wanted to collect them.
Li Du retrieved the little bug; there was no sign of the young man who had stolen the basketball. He was going to have the little bug leave.
The little bug, however, hovered in the air. It then found many more cardboard boxes which had been wrapped up tightly.
Thinking of the magazines he had seen earlier, his heart fluttered. So he got the little bug to fly into the other boxes for a look.
They were still National Geographic magazines with covers depicting the same yellow border with the laurel leaf pattern and arranged in order of issue number. Those in the box were magazines from these five years: 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999.
Not one issue short!
The other boxes were also National Geographic—all the boxes were. Counting from the recent years, there were more than 20 boxes, covering more than a century's worth of history!
As the little bug flew in and out of these boxes, Li Du felt as though he were watching a documentary on history. He had found magazines from the last century: 1980s, 1960s, 1950s, 1940s, 1930s . . .
Lastly, he found a small booklet which had been wrapped with cling film. It was different from those magazines with yellow borders on their covers. This book had a pink cover with a number on its top right corner: 1888.10.
Li Du, who was familiar with National Geographic, was shocked to see this thin booklet. If he recalled correctly, this was the serial number of the first National Geographic publication!
The little bug flew inside the cover. There was faint traces of autographs signed by fountain pens. A row of names were on it: John Wesley Powell, Adolphus W. Greely . . .
Li Du was not familiar with these names—most people from modern times would not be familiar with these names. Only after searching for these names online with his phone did he realize how famous they had been during their time!
John Wesley Powell had taken the lead in the exploration of the Grand Canyon. He was, at that time, a famous explorer of wetlands and water sources. Adolphus W. Greely was the first person to perform polar exploration; he was also known as the "Ice and Snow Warrior."
These men had another identity: the founders of the National Geographic magazine and the earliest members of the Cosmos Club.
The first article in this pink booklet was titled "The Classification of Geographic Forms by Genesis" and was signed by W.J. McGee.
These magazines were much different; there was not a single photograph in them. They were filled mostly with words and figures, with the simple layout but serious analysis.
For more than a decade after it was first published, National Geographic did not have any pictures. Because of the academics within the articles, the inclusion of photographs was deemed as shallow.
This was up until 1905. Then, the publication's CEO Grosvenor had, at the risk of being fired from his job, inserted 11 photographs taken by a Russian explorer of Lhasa in Tibet.
In the same box as the inaugural issue, Li Du found this exact issue—the photograph of Lhasa in it was in black and white.
Scanning through these magazines, Li Du took in a deep breath.
He retrieved the little bug, and then as he stared at this storage unit, he felt exhilarated.
Honestly, he would like to have these magazines. They were simply too precious. That was, however, not why he wanted to have them. If he could get his hands on them, he wouldn't sell them away.
National Geographic might have been referred to as a magazine, but it could actually be thought of as an encyclopedia of sorts. The full set of the publication encompassed a whole century's worth of the best adventurers', scientists' and photographers' hearts, sweat and tears.
This set of magazines was more than just a showcase of sights and sounds. It also covered the ordinary folks, the planet's creatures from the depths of the sea to the tallest mountains, as well spoke about the vast universe. To people with a passion for nature and life, it was like the work of God!
This was especially true for the inaugural issue; only 200 copies had been printed in October 1888 and none had been put on sale. After all the key personnel had signed them, they were ceremoniously sent out to those who had supported them in their work.
More than 120 years later, this inaugural issue had become a rarity. When Li Du had searched about it on the Internet, only the Cosmos Club in Washington had retained its two copies.
One copy had once appeared on the Internet; it was put up for auction on eBay. It had sold for 400,000 US dollars.
Eventually, it was found to be a reproduction instead of an original.
Even so, it still sold for 50,000 dollars in the end. Reproductions of the inaugural issue were also rarely seen.
Li Du had no idea who these magazines belonged to but he could tell that the owner did not value them.
These boxes had been placed in the storage unit haphazardly. They were full of dust; some of the boxes had even been chewed on by vermins and bugs. Due to the humidity and weight impact, signs of damage had started to appear on some of the magazines.
He thought about it, and deduced that the owner probably did not know the value of the magazines. He could maybe find a way to buy them over. 
Seeing that he stood still, Hans asked, "What's wrong with you? Getting sick?"
He flashed his middle finger at him."F*ck you, you're the sick one. Come, let's continue searching for that *sshole. He must be in one of these houses."
Ah Ow walked along the path. When she passed a garden, she sniffed and then howled excitedly.
Li Du released the little bug to let it fly into the house attached to the garden. It was empty but when the little bug flew out, he saw someone hiding in the kennel of the garden…

"So," Kishan said turning back to face me with a mildly amused smile, "would you like to have cookies with me?"

I could not help but let out a sigh before I smiled back. "Sure just let me grab some coffee." With that he went to sit at the table. 

Click click click click

I heard the sound of him typing on his phone as I made myself a cup of instant coffee. As I pulled out the chair to sit down however he quickly closed it and put it face down on the table.

"So Bailey," he said looking up at me as I gently stirred the milk into my coffee. His dark eyes were lit with amusement. "How likely is it that we've been set up?" he asked casually. 

I slightly raised an eye brow at his direct attitude. I sipped my coffee to buy time to contemplate my answer.

"Well it's not an accident that I'm here but I find it hard to believe Ariel would fake car troubles not to be here, so I don't know." I decided to answer honestly. I have always appreciated people who cut to the chase rather than being cryptic and beating around the bush.

I was raised up north where people say what they mean and mean what they say. However the summer before I started high school my family moved to just an hour north of New Orleans on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain. I still lived in the area.

Kishan's calm yet direct attitude was a breath of fresh air to me. This kind of attitude can be hard to find in the south.

"Hmm," was all he said as he sipped his coffee. I took advantage of the momentary silence that no longer felt as awkward to take a bite from a cookie. "You said you were an English Lit. major so tell me, what is your favorite classic?"

"Pride and Prejudice," I answered easily. I can always talk about books.

"How come?"

"Well, originally I fell in love with the 6 hour mini series as a child. It was my favorite 'movie'," I made air quotes with one hand. "I can still waste a day watching it. I didn't actually read the book until I was in high school but I was not disappointed with it at all. It's not just my favorite classic, it's my favorite period."

He smiled in a relaxed manor that made him very easy to talk to. Though I am generally the quiet type until you get to know me my words flowed naturally. His whole presence gave off a very calm but sturdy feeling that was aided by his smooth baritone voice. 

Also did I mention he was handsome? Dangerously so.

"What do you like about it so much?" he asked taking a bite of his own cookie. 

"I love the dynamic between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy as they get to know each other and fall in love in spite of themselves. And how they still end up together even though Mr. Darcy screwed up his initial proposal.

"Not only that, I love how the side characters have their own love stories and are well thought out. The problems they all face real problems but nothing so exaggerated like todays romances. Don't get me wrong, I love a good K-drama but exactly how many people actually fall into a coma only to wake up and have temporary amnesia?

"Though it's a historical romance it's so much easier to relate to how one simply falls for a person in spite of everything. Jane and Mr. Bingley are so sweet together providing the perfect compliment to Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy's turbulent relationship." 

As I spoke he listened attentively sipping his coffee and finishing off a cookie. Finally I realized I was rambling on about a romantic story, which he probably would not be interested in, so I ended my speech.

"So," I said mildly embarrassed. "Do you like to read?"

"No," he answered then allowed a dramatic pause to happen before continuing, "I love it. So much so I just recently finished my PHD in English Literature." His smile was slightly playful as he finished his sentence.

My face rapidly switched from showing my momentary stomach clenching horror from embarrassing myself to wide eyed with surprise.

'So this man likes to play jokes,' was my first thought. 

"Mr. Kishan, was the dramatic pause really necessary?" I complained knowing I had been had.

"Hmm," he took another sip of his coffee. "I'm not sure what you're referring to," he said though his expression still said otherwise.

I let it go with a small sigh. "Then what is your favorite?" I asked sipping my own coffee. He thought for a moment before answering.

"I can't say I have a favorite book but my favorite collection would have to be the Sherlock Holmes series."

"So you're a mystery type." 

The conversation flowed naturally from then on as we continued to discuss different books we had both read. We discovered we had a lot of the same taste in literature and before we realized it the cookies were gone and our coffee was cold. 

Almost an hour later Ariel and her mom finally returned. When the door opened the two of us had been laughing over a comedic part of the book we were discussing. I looked over and met Ariel's inquisitive gaze. 

"Sorry we're so late," Ariel's mom said looking up at the clock that hung on the wall. "The tow truck took much longer to show up than they initially said." Both her and Ariel walked over to the table. "Kishan this my daughter Ariel, Ariel this is Kishan."

Kishan stood and shook her hand as they exchanged greetings. Ariel was all done up ready for her date wearing a beautiful bright orange dress. Reminding me that she knew what would happen when I came over dressed like I normally was.

"It's unfortunate but I don't think we will be able to make our dinner reservation tonight," Kishan said looking at his leather watch. 

"We can reschedule for tomorrow night if you're free," Ariel's mom suggested.

"Actually," Kishan hesitated for a moment before saying, "if it's alright with you I would like to change plans." He turned to look at me with an anxious expression and continued, "Bailey, would you like to go out with me tomorrow night?"

I instantly blushed at the unexpected question. "Aaa sure," I said somewhat dazed. His shoulders and face relaxed at my response. I had not noticed when they had tensed. 

We quickly exchanged numbers and set a time for him to pick me up from my place. As he was leaving he turned his head around to say, "Make sure you dress up tomorrow." 

Thunk. The door closed behind him leaving us three women standing there momentarily stunned. It was Ariel's mom who broke the silence.

"Bailey, if you are scheduled to work tomorrow get someone to cover your shift. We need to spend the day shopping for a dress."

"Aaa, I'm off tomorrow." 

"Good. Be here by 9 o'clock and we will all go together. This is unexpected but a good result nonetheless." She promptly turned to leave, leaving no room for discussion. 

Thunk. The door closed behind her as she left. As soon as she did Ariel grabbed the sleeve of my hoodie and started jumping up and down excitedly.

I am your average American girl from a middle class family. One of the last people you would expect to have an arranged marriage. However thanks to my best friend that was exactly what happened! When the sea monster was badly wounded by Roman's attacks and Angor's fire, as soon as it saw a chance between Roman's weakened attacks, it slipped away.
Afraid that he would leave his back wide open for an attack, Roman watched the monster leave without doing anything.
Angor saw everything and almost laughed in disdain. Several more attacks and the monster would be done for. Yet Roman let it escape just because of the pointless concerns.
By canceling his Field of Fire, Angor had already decided to give the trophy to Roman. But it seemed this man was overcautious.
With the battle ended and the water pacified, Roman clenched his fists as he felt greatly annoyed about letting his prey flee.
Then he turned around and gave Angor a thoughtful look.
Angor leaned against a pole and returned a casual smile to Roman.
"Such a pity, Mister Roman. That should have been all yours."
"Humph."
Roman wouldn't start arguing with Angor yet since neither of them breached a certain boundary.
"I've just learned that a monster of that level is too much for me to handle alone. I'll be expecting further back-up from you, Mister Padt."
Without waiting for an answer, Roman dived into his room. He used so much strength that the floor in front of Angor had cracked up.
"Geez. The ship's guardian broke the ship before a monster did?" Angor shook his head and headed to his room as well.
None of the sailors spoke anything after the incident. Even mortals were smart enough to see that Angor saved their lives. But as the employees of the White Clam Sea Fare Association, they HAD to support Roman, or at least, not oppose him.
There was only Helen who whispered "thank you" to Angor when Angor moved by.
Angor chose to stay quiet. He didn't wish to get anyone into trouble.
He closed his door as his pretended straight face turned into a big frown. After what happened just now, he decided to deal with Roman more carefully.
This was somewhat similar to Hookdick's matter, which started as a small conflict and turned more serious as Hookdick treated their enmity small-mindedly until it became life-or-death strife.
To Angor, the initial unfriendliness was something he could tolerate. But he feared that this Roman man would become excessively competitive overtime and start using tricks, just like Hookdick.
He would stay put and observe for now. Roman was the true leader of the ship, while he was only a visitor. While it was true that it was easy to get rid of Roman and explain the incident to the mortals, Angor wouldn't do such a thing as it might anger Floating Mech City.
Unless Roman did something to force him.
Until that happened, he would sit tight and conserve strength.

The fair weather persisted into the night, as The Limpet sailed between two starry curtains. Without disturbing elements, the ship enjoyed a brief respite.
Instead of studying, Angor left his room and floated onto the deck to enjoy the sea breeze, hoping to remove all the unnecessary burdens in his mind.
It had been half a month since he departed from White Clam City. Each time he realized that he was going home, he felt it unrealistic as if everything were a dream.
There was nothing other than endless water and drifting clouds to see, and people could easily lose track of date and time until they forgot how many days had passed.
Angor was once troubled by the delusion that this was not The Limpet, but The Redbud, where he was still the mortal boy heading to White Coral Floating Island Academy.
At the same time, the peaceful ambiance caused him to temporarily forget how dangerous these waters were supposed to be.
But he still appreciated precious tranquility.
He heard footsteps approaching his position and quickly ascertained that they came from a mortal.
When he smelled the faint scent of perfume, he opened his eyes and saw Helen, who was standing about ten feet from him.
It seemed the officer lady had changed her uniform into a white skirt for sleeping. Similar to Angor, she was gazing into the dark horizon along the guard rails.
"Thank you very much, sir, or I would have probably joined the others down there," Helen said while looking at Angor's relaxed smile.
"The ship won't go where it should with the chief officer dead."
"Still, you saved my life, sir." Helen suddenly changed her tone of a professional marine into that of a timid woman. "I don't have anything to repay you. If it's fine, you can have… me."
"If that's your wish, just get The Limpet to its destination safe and sound."
Helen put up a proper manner again. "I understand, sir. It's my job to bring The Limpet to Ferran Land. I'll not fail it."
They spent a moment in silence while enjoying the stars and moonlight.
"Sir-sir, you should know that the other sailors are just as grateful as me for what you have done. They can't tell you because of… reasons."
Angor decided to change the subject since he didn't want to ruin the mood yet. "So, Officer Helen, each time you join a voyage like this, it will take you more than a year, right?"
"That's right. The longest sail I can remember took me three years."
"How much time have you spent on the sea? And how do you pass time while at it?"
Helen was a bit surprised since she never saw "mighty wizards" showing interest in the lives of mortals.
What she didn't know was that supernatural individuals weren't so different from mortals when it came to bread and butter. For example, the Enchanting Theater in Midnight Sovereign was meant for both supernaturals and mortals to enjoy. Even an ancient being like Lady Mirror knew about the nasty operas.
In Angor's view, apprentices were just like common mortals, except that they were usually blinded by pride and prejudice.
"I was born on the sea and then sent to a school on land. I think I had about 20 years of career experience on the waters. As for killing time, no. I don't kill time. It's the time that kills me.
"I don't need to find entertainment to occupy myself once I've realized this. I just, bear with it, then everything will pass." Helen showed a sad look. "The sea never changes. But people come and go, and sometimes, they got replaced. May I ask a question, sir?"
Angor nodded nonchalantly.
"You didn't seem surprised to see a woman serving as the chief mate of such an important ship. May I know why?" Helen looked at Angor in the eyes.
Angor thought Helen was going to ask how to become an apprentice, like how Ananda did. Now, this wasn't expected.
"Why do you ask? Why should I be surprised?"
"Because I'm a woman?"
Angor shook his head. "Gender doesn't matter. I happen to know a seafarer lady who commanded fleets and conquered her nation, as a mortal. Being a woman does not mean you can't achieve great things."
"Mi-Mister, are you perhaps talking about Lord Asbel of the Blackberry Waters?"
"So you know her? Then why are you doubting yourself? You already have a bright example."
"But they said that Lord Asbel was captured by the Nightwolves pirate clan four years ago, that she became the 13th bride of their leader, who became the new dominator of Blackberry."
"Spreading false stories and enjoying the forged glory. People love this stuff so much. Your Lord Asbel is no longer a common mortal. She can't possibly be imprisoned by some pirates."
"So the Nightwolves are lying… I used to consider Lord Asbel as my hero, someone I should learn from. But… I was not faithful enough. The rumors… I was swayed so easily."
Angor chuckled as he shook his head. He wasn't expecting Nausica's glory to be so widespread, and that her enemies enjoyed slandering her name after she left the mortal world.
He then glanced at the mermaid statue on the prow of the ship.
