The little darling reached out his little paws to grab the items as he babbled and insisted on playing with them.
Shui Anluo grabbed his little paws, these were not for playing. What if he breaks them? Both of them would not be able to reimburse them even if they were pawned here.
"Ah, ah..." The little darling struggled unhappily as he held his paws out. He had not even touched those shiny things.
Icy Chu raised his brows and picked the little darling up. He placed him on the counter and the little darling crouched down, using his meaty little hands to sweep the emeralds away.
Shui Anluo placed one palm on her face and watched as her prodigal son swatted the emeralds onto the ground one by one. It was a good thing those were of good quality so they do not shatter easily.
Once the little darling finished sweeping, all that was left was a delicate and exquisite emerald jade. The jade was smalled than a palm and glittered enticingly. It looked particularly beautiful beneath the special lights.
Chu Ningyi reached out to pick up the little jade and looked at the little darling. "This one?"
"Ah pu..." The little darling smiled at his daddy.
"Alright." Chu Ningyi nodded and gave the jade to the salesperson. "Wrap this up."
Shui Anluo's lips twitched, was this a special kind of communication between father and son?
Her son certainly had a unique style when choosing things. He would throw away what he did not like. This prodigal child, ever since he was by his father's side, he had been prodigal to the end[1].
After choosing the present, Chu Ningyi got Shui Anluo to take it and carried the little darling as he left.
Shui Anluo could see the viciousness hidden in the salesperson's smile because she would have to clean this mess in a while. However, because this was her big boss, she did not dare say a thing.
Now that the present has been chosen, Chu Ningyi brought them to the Chu family's old residence straightaway.
Ever since she had been conned by Chu Ningyi into coming here, she had never returned.
The old residence was more lively than usual. The Chu family was considered to be one of the elite families of 'A' City. Even though this was considered a family dinner, the number of people who had arrived was no small amount.
Shui Anluo felt a little repulsed. Aside from the fact that she was the little darling's mother, she has no relation to the Chu family now.
After he got down from the car, Chu Ningyi turned around to look at Shui Anluo who had remained in the vehicle. He looked at the time. "There's still time for you to leave but if the little darling is unable to find you and ends up crying, what will you do?" Chu Ningyi threatened calmly.
"You..." Shui Anluo looked up and angrily opened the door. She had already gone with him to buy the present anyway, why would she be afraid of making rounds with him inside?
Shui Anluo thought secretly and immediately flung the car door shut.
Chu Ningyi smirked. When Shui Anluo approached he handed the babbling little darling over to her and wrapped one arm around her waist.
"Hey, Director Chu, have some dignity, we have no relationship," Shui Anluo scoffed coldly.
Chu Ningyi raised his brow and murmured into her ear, "Are we not the parents of the child?"
His words were too seductive and his breath was much too hot.
Shui Anluo shivered, wanting to distance herself from where his breath had dispersed but did not want him to follow him like a shadow.
"Director Chu, are you teasing a young maiden from a good family?" Shui Anluo scoffed icily.
"Young maiden?" Chu Ningyi repeated and looked profoundly down at his gurgling son. The meaning of it was obviously to ask if she was still a young maiden.
"Ningyi?"
Before Shui Anluo could retaliate, a surprised yet familiar sounding voice called out from behind them.

The Bureau Chief was just making a casual remark. A much-beloved child such as Hong Dali probably only appeared once every thousands of years in the Heavenly State. What was most important was that he was safe. As for all his little flaws, they were not important!
Once they were out of the cave, the Bureau Chief looked for an isolated place before asking in a low voice, "Huishou, what is it? Tell me quickly."
"All right, Bureau Chief." Mu Huishou recounted the events leading to the tragedy of Abe Haruta. "It has been confirmed that Abe Haruta is a Jabanese with top-notch skills. He disguised himself as a beggar and stationed himself under Chenghui Building but was apprehended by city officers 100% loyal to Young Master Dali…" and so on and so forth. It was good news that Hong Dali had returned alive, especially since he had found so much treasure down there. It was all Hong Dali's property now. Tang Muxin sat down next to Hong Dali and said, "Dali, there is so much good stuff down there. Why don't we tell Uncle Hong about it and let him share the joy? Uncle Hong will also definitely like this Dali Bean!"

There was no need for any hesitation. Hong Dali immediately said, "Exchange for Hong Weiguo's and Lan Ruoxi's Health attributes. Increase both to a hundred!" Dad and Mum, hehe, I will not let you dote on me in vain. You must have health—maximum health!
"Please wait for a short while…" The system's voice sounded. "Redeeming in progress…"
It did not take long before Hong Weiguo's and Lan Ruoxi's vitality became a full hundred points.

The Health attribute of the five family and friends were now as follows—Hong Weiguo: 100, Lan Ruoxi: 100, Tang Muxin: 87, Li Nianwei: 82, Lin Chuyin: 82.
Hong Dali was extremely pleased with the outcome. 
Only with health can you have everything else. As his family and friends, how could they be falling sick so often!

Door to Heaven.
"Eh?" Hong Weiguo suddenly touched his chest and stretched his arms and legs. He felt light all over.

With that thought, Hong Weiguo called for his private medical team and requested for a full body checkup.
Half an hour later, the results of the checkup astonished Hong Weiguo.

Hong Weiguo was dazed. When the medical team left, Hong Weiguo sat down on the sofa and blanked out for a while. Then, he suddenly broke out in laughter. "Hahaha. It's Dali. It's definitely that little brat Dali who did this! Aiya, I have a good son. He may be somewhat of a prodigal, but he has done well. He has done well!"
After he finished speaking, he pursed his lips. "Now, if Ruoxi could recover from her ailments too…"
Before he even finished his sentence, the phone rang. It was Lan Ruoxi on the line. "Weiguo! Something happened! Something big happened!"
"What happened?" Judging from Lan Ruoxi's voice, it did not sound like anything bad had happened. Hong Weiguo asked, "What happened to get you so worked up?"
"My gastric problem is gone!" Lan Ruoxi's voice was full of amazement. "It just went away without rhyme or reason. I have no idea what happened. Earlier, I suddenly felt great all over and my stomach did not hurt anymore. At first, I was worried that something bad might have happened, so I got a full body checkup done. All the little issues plaguing me have disappeared! I feel wonderful all over now!"
"You have recovered too?!" Hong Weiguo's eyes widened. "Me too!"
"Ah?!" Lan Ruoxi exclaimed. "Really? You are at the Door To Heaven? I am here too. Wait for me, I will go over to you now!" She then hung up.
Half an hour later.
"Weiguo, you mean…" Lan Ruoxi looked around. Seeing that there was no one around, she said softly, "This is all because of Dali? Our little prodigal?"
"Yes. I realized that ever since he bought Ye Lai Xiang, my health has improved." Hong Weiguo then continued in a low voice, "Do you remember the time when you saw his thing, and it had become almost normal? We even wanted to ask him to get married quickly?"
"I remember, I remember!" Lan Ruoxi was an intelligent person. She immediately understood what Hong Weiguo was trying to tell her. "What you mean is, our little prodigal has gotten God's blessings?"
"I guess so. I think that his body has gotten better because of his squandering," said Hong Weiguo, smiling. "That's why I have never stopped him from buying anything. Money can be earned, but people cannot be replaced."
"That's true." Lan Ruoxi's eyes reddened. "Our little prodigal is really filial. He thinks of us when there are benefits to be had. We have not doted on him in vain, haha!"
"I think we have to call him a big prodigal now…" Hong Weiguo chuckled. "The little brat bought two aircraft carriers a few days ago. You were busy these few days, I think you have not heard about it?"
"What?!" Lan Ruoxi gaped. "The little brat Dali is buying aircraft carriers nowadays?"
Birds of the same feather flock together, or rather, the son takes after the mother. Lan Ruoxi was not angry at all. She just laughed. "This big prodigal is getting more and more generous! I like it! Calvis ripped a hole through space and traveled though it with Jake in tow. Jake looked around when they arrived in different surroundings. Calvis looked at his servant and began to explain, "This space is part of the Angola arm. It far from the center of Parthian Civilization but still in the same galaxy that the Parthian senate Resides." 

Jake was shocked and looked at Calvis, who had transported them into the center of Parthian space. Jake couldn't contain himself, "how far can you go in one teleportation." Jake was clear where they were and had seen star maps of the space between their shield world and the outskirts of the Parthian Empire. Jake thoroughly prepared himself for a very long journey even with teleportation, yet somehow, Calvis managed to bring them to the heart of the Parthian empire in one jump.

Calvis didn't say anything as he headed toward a garden world. Jake flew behind him. Jake curious about Calvis had looked up what type of Parthian he was. Jake's records had shown that there were five categories of Parthians. Commoners, Vessels, Minor nobles, Major nobles, and Royalty.

Jake, from his record, had found only royalty could grant immortality to other non-Parthian beings without injuring themselves. Jake was sure Calvis was royalty, but he convinced himself that even royalty could only teleport to the outskirts of the Empire. Putting that aside, Jake sped up to catch up to Calvis, who landed on the surface without a sound.

Jake waited patiently for Calvis to speak.

Calvis looked at Jake and said, "This planet is Xnion 706, a world that was scaffolded by my father personally." 

Calvis nodded to show his understanding he had learned about scaffolding personally when he created his small dimension attached to his shield world. 

Calvis reached out with his mind and touched his father's. His father recognized him and let him in, 'so you have returned son where have you been all this time.'

'I have been exploring a new galaxy outside of the empires reach.' 

His father was surprised but then hid that emotion. When did his son become so powerful that he could teleport to places outside of the Empires reach? Lord Ibex was sure that he would take a while to teleport to the outer edge of the Parthian Empire. Ibex contacted his friend Idreile and asked him to open the gateway to the scaffold for his son.

Calvis appeared in Lord Ibex's throne room and ran to his father like a little kid shocking Jake, who had teleported with him. Lord Ibex also stood up and hugged Calvis, "so the prodigal son returns." 

Lord Ibex was happy that Calvis was back in his realm of control where he could protect him though lord Ibex knew that he no longer needed his protection.

Jake sees the odd father and son pair and looks confused. Calvis was so cold to him and Talsia, but with his father, a completely different side came out.

Calvis's father held Calvis arms-length seeing all the things that had changed about his son. Lord Ibex looks at Calvis and asks, "When did you grow a pair of wings." 

Calvis just shrugged. Lord Ibex, shook his head. This son of his was trying to be mysterious, not that it mattered too much. Appendages like wings weren't uncommon among Parthians that found them beautiful and grafted them on. It wasn't that much different than getting a new tattoo to a Parthian.

"And who are you." 

Jake was slightly startled when attention turned to him. The pressure Lord Ibex releases toward him is enough to crush mountains and made Jake kneel in his presence. 

Calvis looks at his father with some annoyance, "Don't do that; he is the newest edition to my pantheon." 

Jake was slightly disgruntled that Calvis introduced him to his father like a new toy that he was proud of but was happy when the pressure surrounding him let up.

"So, why have you returned my son?"

Under the shade of the night, William eased the door to his house open and crept in. He backtracked to the door and slowly shut it. The moment the door closed, light illuminated his surroundings and he followed its source.

 At a table with a lantern by its side, Bapholin stood with its arms on its sides. "And the prodigal son returns. Where have you been?" it asked. 
 
 "I-I got robbed." He affixed his gaze on the floor.
 
 It rested its weight on one leg. "Robbed? Robbed means your belongings were taken. Why do you still have those?" It gestured on the supplies.
 
 "I fought back."
 
 "Say that again," he requested disbelievingly.
 
 He placed the sack beside the beast. "I fought back," he repeated with more force and power. 

 "Does fighting back you come home the next day?" It began to inspect the contents of the sack.

 "Why'd you disappear all of a sudden?" he retorted.

 "It's good you ordered the beetroot, we've been running low," the beast answered, continuing to rummage through.
 
 Seeing the interrogation was dismissed, William retired on a chair, leaned back and then tensed again. "Is father asleep?"
 
 "He hasn't come home since yesterday," answered Bapholin. "I am to return by his side at tomorrow's dawn. You are supposed to behave yourself until he comes back. Well supposed to."
 
 A tremendous amount of relief washed over him and calmed his senses. He had feared that Radulf was waiting for him, and he had been beyond angry. He had not known what to say or how to explain things to him. He could not even explain it to himself. 
 
 Bapholin pulled out a scroll from a pile of books on the table. "Your reward," it announced.
 
 His brows knitted. He straightened his back and picked up the piece of parchment. His hands felt the rough and decrepit texture of the paper as if it would crumble at the slightest touch. "Is this…" His eyes darted to one sentence after the next, digesting the meaning of the words and symbols written on each line. He had it. He had something worth trying—worth starting.  
 
 "I don't quite get what the big fuss is about," stated Bapholin. "So I got you the incantation you wanted. It wasn't at all that difficult."

 Ever since he was younger, he thought of his father to be a grand magician. A secret wizard that hid from the eyes of everyone. One morning as he came to, his father had been at the basement. And like any other day, he went to him to ask for his chores and errands to run, but instead he had found him with a corpse lying on the floor. He had spoken a language—words with extended vowels, meshed consonants and a lot of crackled noises of the tongue—and the dead came back to life. It was moving, talking and telling its secrets before its death. It had been like it had never died at all. At the sight of it, other people would had been yelling for fear and panic, but he was not. William knelt in-between steps of the staircase on his descent, and seemed to watch something magnificent, like turtle doves released into the air or a grand birthday celebration of one of the nobles' sons. As his father conversed, prodding and inquiring on a million things—which he did not care for the details—he birthed a dream. A dream that someday he would be the one conversing with the dead. That he would be the one who would sow life back together again and ask its deepest, darkest secrets. 

 Ever since then, he would watch from afar at his father's amazing works. He had seen him conjure an animal made of bones, let blood swirl and cover a wound, see through the eyes of a soul's past and more. Of course, most of the times, Bapholin caught him lurking in the shadows trying to get a good look out of the next wondrous spell. If it had not been for the beast's laziness, he had already been chained and whipped for eavesdropping.

 And now after all those times he stood in the dark, wishing, dreaming, he could finally create magic—even just a bit of it. "What does this do exactly, Bapholin?" he asked.
 
 "Simple protection spell," answered the beast. "Easy to do and useful when you are or someone else is in danger. Not everyone can do it of course."

 "Not everyone?"

 The beast went to a pile of rags and lay on its belly. "No mere person can. But of course you can. You are the son of Radulf Howe, a powerful magician. In your veins lie the same powers. Ooohhh. Magician. Scary," it yawned.

 "I…can do this?" 

 "Why don't you just give it a try? Tired with all the questions. I need my nap."

 His mind buzzed as his heart beat fast. It might not be the biggest and grandest spell there was, but it was definitely a start—a start towards the path of becoming a true magician.
 
 William opened his mouth to ask another question but stopped instantly when a cadence of shouts and flickers of light distracted him. He crossed the room to the window and peeked. Across the hillside, a number of people had gathered at Joan Altier's house, carrying torches and pitchforks. They were shouting words that were too far to comprehend. 

 "Looks like a riot. Maybe it's another hanging," said Bapholin appearing by the window sill.
William knew Joan Altier because of her chicken recipes and pies. A year before, when she moved into her home, she'd ask him to come over to taste her home made dishes, and he instantly loved them. From then on, when she'd make something new, he'd be invited and be taught how to remake it. Though she and his father were rough acquaintances that couldn't stand each other, William made it a point to always visit her and offer his help for any errands a man would be best suited for.
"I have to go see what's going on," he said as he grabbed a cape from the hanger and left the house.
 
 When he reached Joan's home, she had rusting chains around her ankles and wrists, and the queen's soldiers were dragging her through a tight angry crowd. Rotting vegetables and fruits flew from all angles, hitting her everywhere—in the face mostly. 
 
 "What's happening?" asked William to no one in particular.
 
 "The soldiers are rounding out Protestants," said a man with freckles all over his face.
 
 "Joan's not a Protestant. She's a devoted Catholic," protested William. "She always goes to mass on Sundays."
 
 "Yeah, hear she is. But she's a witch too."
 
 "A witch? Her?"
 
 "A witch she is," repeated the man. "Heard she put a charm on a nobleman. They're keeping his name under. Must've been a nasty one."
 
 "Joan won't do that. She would never…" William saw the end destination where Joan would lead to: a caged carriage. Inside, three people with drooped and familiar faces stared back at him, the Ameries: Catherine and her parents. But what caught most of his attention was the fourth person who sat on the back with her arms around her knees. Elise. Her usual cheery demeanor had been snuffed out and was replaced with a heartbreaking blank gaze. 
 
 The man with the freckles was blabbering something else he had heard when William made his way around the hating mass and straight to the carriage. He was only a few feet away when a soldier blocked him and held a hand for him to stop.
 
 "Not any closer," the soldier warned.

 "Let me talk to her," pleaded William. "She didn't do anything. She's not a witch."

 "That is for the queen to decide, not you. Go back, boy." 

 He put his face right next to the soldier. "The queen? The queen doesn't know her. I know her. And she's not a witch."

 "I said go back," shouted the soldier.

 "Aren't you listening? I said she's not a—"

 The soldier shoved him back, drew his sword and pointed it at him. "Go back," he said sternly.

 Bapholin popped right next to the soldier and yawned, "I'd do as he says. He looks serious."

William turned from the serious face of the soldier and his blade to Elise in the cage. She found him looking at her and forced a bright smile. I'm okay, she mouthed.

The carriage door opened as Joan was pushed inside with the rest of the criminals. When the door shut, the soldiers mounted their horses and began to move the carriage forward. The townsfolk followed behind with a slow, peaceful march, but with snarling and hateful faces nonetheless.

With a scream still reverberating through the forest I race to the campsite, fully expecting that a certain birdbrain got hungry and deserted her post to hunt, leaving the unconscious Kiera at the mercy of some roaming beast. Contrary to my expectation, said birdbrain is staring at the lying form of Kiera with perplexity, her beak almost touching Kiera's freshly unconscious face.
"Chiia… don't tell me you've been looking at her like that this entire time…"
"Kuuu~~!"
She shakes her tail a little at that, evidently quite proud of her studious nature, while I don't even bother to stifle a sigh at her actions.
"Chiia, you scared the poor woman so much that she fainted. How would you feel if you woke up and a giant beast was right above you, staring you in the eye?"
"... Wait, don't answer that. You'd probably thank them for delivering *cough* being *cough* breakfast."
"Anyway, I'll watch over Kiera, could you hunt something for us to all eat? By the way, that white horse over there is off limits."
"Ku~."

Contrary to some of the memories I've seen, setting up camp is surprisingly easy. I cleared the area by absorbing all the biomass around, felled a few trees by eroding their bases with chimeric cells, and snapped off all the branches by hand before tossing the trees around to make a bench. Set up the tent, draw some water with a gravity field, add a little fire magic, and you have a perfect camp in under ten minutes. Really, I fail to see why humans make such a big deal of it.
A few minutes later, Chiia returns with a deer in her beak, and I start roasting some cuts for sleeping beauty over here. To avoid traumatizing our princess (again), I ask Chiia to shrink down a bit, and after resisting the power of her upturned eyes and a "kweeh~~..." she finally assents.
It takes a solid ten minutes more, but Kiera finally starts to awaken, her eyes fluttering open as she gazes dazedly at the forest canopy.
"Whaa… Where am I…"
"Good morning sleeping beauty, I carried you away from where everyone fought and brought you to my camp. How are your wounds?"
"My wounds? They're… fine, I *ow* think… But Del, I had this horrible nightmare… There was this giant bird monster right above my face, just staring at me… I thought I was gonna be eaten!"
"Oh… you mean this old bird-monster?" I say with a grin, point at Chiia. She picks up her head and gives me a deathglare, probably for the little "old" bit I slipped in there.
"HWAAAAUUU!!!!"
It takes Kiera no time at all to lose her dignified demeanor and cling onto my arm, hiding behind my back and trying to make sure I stay between her and the fearsome predator.
Yes, the very same fearsome predator that just came up and rubbed her head on my chest while going "kukuu~~~~".
"Haha, Kiera, that's Chiia, my familiar. Sorry for her scaring you like that, she's too curious for her own good."

It's night now, and the two of us are sitting in the light of the campfire, serenaded by crickets and the gentle snoring of a certain rainbow-colored chicken. 
Kiera stayed a bit skittish around Chiia for a while, but that all changed when she shrunk to shoulder-size before bed. At that point, it was Chiia who was frightened by Kiera's attempted murder, er, attempted hugging to the point of suffocation.
Once she calmed down, we got to talking about ourselves. Of course, that was off to a rocky start with the day's events, but she started to open up after regaling her with some of Carlton boy's more innocent exploits. Granted, that came at the price of me only reinforcing the "prodigal son" image I so proudly proclaimed earlier, but on the other hand, it's quite a good disguise. Unless you're a thief, there's no need to pay attention to someone with loads of money and the defining personality traits of hedonistic, unambitious, and being completely useless.
After finally evoking a laugh from her tender lips, a strangely serious look comes over her face, and she hesitates a moment before opening her mouth.
"Del… Why did you save me, really?"
"Heh, isn't it obvious? I'm a prodigal son, and you're an attractive woman. What else was I supposed to do?"
"Don't give me that!!!" she shouts, tears suddenly in her eyes, "How can some little wastrel be so powerful, and me, who's trained under the church for a decade, am so weak?!?! I couldn't even save one of them! Not even one! And somehow you're strong enough to just race over and jump in, sweeping it all away!"
It's at that moment that the memories of the bandit I assimilated back in the ruin floods into my mind. He was just one soldier on break, against a hoard of bandits, and he couldn't even protect his own wife and daughter. Two broken bodies tossed away like used trash, a burning shack, and fire… The flames burnt away all the good in his life.
Emotions course through my body, and I can't help but clench my fists, much less the tear on my cheek. Even though they're not my own emotions, just human feelings, why…
I see now. This is what it means to be weak. This is how she's feeling.
"Kiera… Even a prodigal son has things he wants to protect. Had, at least. So I became strong, and I'll become stronger still, because I never want the people I care about to be hurt again."
She seems shocked by my sudden outburst, but the words pour out, like the memories I've stolen away have a will of their own.
"Look, I know how you're feeling. Scared. Powerless. But most of all, angry, because it feels like that's the only way you can move forward. Why did the world make you meet that Demon? Why weren't you strong enough? Why does someone like me wield power I don't deserve? And that anger gives you the strength to keep going."
"Kiera, I won't tell you to let go of your anger. That'd only leave you empty. But as I see it, you have two choices-- anyone in your position does. You can use that anger to give yourself a push, force you to grow stronger and become the person you know you are. The other option… is to break. To become the very thing that made you angry in the first place, and absolve yourself of it. Everyone wants that first choice, but most fall into the second one without even realizing that they've changed."
 "I knew a man like that once… He was a soldier, returning from war, only to lose his wife and daughter to bandits in the worst way. He couldn't save them, and it haunted him to his death. To escape the nightmare, he became a bandit himself, performed the same acts countless times, all to replace the two figures haunting him in that burning house with someone, anyone but his wife and daughter."
With that, the memories are assuaged, but I can't end it like that. I've meddled in her life at whim enough, and maybe, just maybe, she wasn't the only one to learn from what I've said.
"So, Kiera… Travel with me for a while. I can't promise it'll be glorious, I can't promise it'll be safe, but I'm absolutely certain it'll be interesting. We'll keep each other on that first choice, help each other grow, and we'll absolutely become better people by the time we're done."
Maybe she wasn't listening to all that I said, maybe had already given up inside, but the moment I stopped speaking she buried her head in my chest, sobbing. Crying, wailing, all manners of sorrow for almost an hour, and as she finally wiped her tears, she looked up to meet my eyes.
"Del… Promise?"
She looked at me expectantly, her eyes shimmering in the moonlight as she held out her left hand, pointing her ring finger towards me. I'm confused for a moment, sifting through the memories until…
"Kiera… Shouldn't a pinky promise be with the last finge-"
"This is a custom where I come from, for serious promises, okay??"
Even though she normally looks older than me, I can't help but see her as a pouting child at this moment. With a smile on my face I indulge her, straining my finger out to curl around hers as they shake.
…
She calmed down after that, and as we watched the fire die down together, we both retired to the tent. I didn't need sleep in the traditional sense, but it seemed to evade her, and after lying awake for a while, her hand crept the distance between our sleeping rolls.
I rolled to the side, my eyes meeting hers for a moment before I broke out in a smile, sliding my hand next to hers. She hesitated and blushed before clasping my hand, and minutes later, gentle snores racked the tent.

If you asked me what genre this story predominantly is, I'd answer “adventurer’s romantic-comedy” without another thought. There are tense, dark moments to be sure, and terrible things to happen, but the silly and shenanigans are never far behind. I’m hoping to write a book that keeps you glued to it, but not so much that you forget to laugh.

There were more festivals after Halloween. There was still Thanksgiving in November and then Christmas in December after that, as well as New Year's Day. Thanksgiving was an important holiday in America, and Sophie and Li Du spent it with the Martins after they returned to Flagstaff. After the holiday, he would head to Riverdale to attend Big Fox's wedding.
They drove down to Riverdale. The town was peaceful and uneventful as ever, the retro vibes compounding the nostalgia. As they transitioned into winter and the town saw fewer and fewer tourists, it seemed to give off some sort of desolation that only added to the feeling.
As Li Du drove into the town, he bumped into a strong, blonde youth who drove his pickup truck into the supermarket to get some stuff. The two of them greeted each other and Li Du waved to him. "Hey, Jack."
The blonde was Big Fox's brother-in-law. The first time Li Du met him, his child had been diagnosed with meningitis and Li Du sent a helicopter to rescue him.
Jack broke into a huge smile at the sight of Li Du. He got down from his car to shake hands with the man and he said, "Hey, Li, you're early. You guys go on ahead to the ranch first. Hans and Barbara probably can't wait to see you guys."
Sophie asked, "How's Chuck? He must be getting pretty big and strong."
Chuck was his son, who had had meningitis. Jack smiled brightly at the mention of him. "Yep, we've got good genes in our family so the little man's becoming a strong lad."
Many things were needed for a ranch wedding, which was why Jack's pick-up truck was completely filled. Li Du opened his trunk to help ease his burden. Jack still had stuff to buy so Li Du brought some of the people back to the ranch first.
The ranch was decorated with colorful lanterns and there were balloons and ribbons wrapped around the simple gate and fence. Every time the wind blew, numerous ribbons floated in the air, making the place look lively.
After Li Du parked his car, he saw Hannah and Stephen. The pair had come down before Li Du did to help prepare for the wedding; otherwise, the bunch of them could have been traveling together.
Because he moved to Los Angeles, it had been quite some time since he last saw Hannah and Stephen. The old friends were overjoyed when they reunited. Li Du pulled the two of them into a hug and asked them, "Aren't you guys getting married one of these days?"
Hannah chuckled. "We're just waiting for Hans to get married, and then it's our turn. What about you guys, Li? What are you and Sophie planning?"
Sophie shrugged. "Well, I'm just waiting. No one's offered to set the date yet, so I can only wait."
Stephen looked at Li Du as he said, "That's a hint, bro, that's a hint, I tell you. Hurry, man, just make your move. Good things come in pairs, right? Maybe we could have our weddings at the same time."
Li Du smiled but did not say anything. Changing the topic, he said, "What about Big Fox? Isn't he going to come to greet an old friend who traveled all this way for his wedding?"
"He's with Barbara. She's trying on wedding dresses. I never thought this brother of mine would stay here like this. Barbara is his whole world now," Hannah remarked.
Stephen sighed. "It's true. I used to be sure Big Fox would never get married in this life. He was Flagstaff's prodigal son, but here he ends up getting married before we did. On top of that, he even became a traditional cowboy. I would never have believed this if I didn't witness it myself!"
Hannah smiled. "I give thanks to God and to my parents."
There was still some doubt lingering in their words, and Li Du found this amusing. "We do have to respect him, though. He might be a prodigal son, but there's no denying he's a good one. I knew he was a good person the moment I saw him help the kids from the welfare home."
"That is true. Even now that he's come to Riverdale, he still makes time to go to Flagstaff to volunteer there," Hannah nodded.
Li Du came to the wedding with a mission. He was Hans' best man, but ranch weddings were simple, and all he had to do was walk with him for a bit during the ceremony, so he did not come to the ranch too early.
The main reason was the unfortunate timing. The wedding was right after Thanksgiving, which he had had to spend with his future parents-in-law to discuss certain matters regarding his and Sophie's wedding. Otherwise, Li Du would have been here earlier, too. He did indeed miss Hans a great deal.
Hans finally appeared after Li Du had spent about an hour at the ranch. The man looked completely different from before. In the past, he would be cleanly shaven and sport the trendiest hairstyle, always staring at passing women. Now, his head of blond hair was in an old-fashioned and simple style. A full beard covered the lower half of his face; his skin had become coarse and had a healthy, reddish hue to it. His aura was completely different from what it had been before.
At the sight of Li Du, he mimed drawing a gun. Li Du opened his arms and the two of them hugged fiercely.
"You're about to get married. How are you feeling?"
Hans laughed boisterously. "Like I'm in a dream. It's great, man. Hurry and get married, marriage is the true meaning to life."
Li Du patted his friend's shoulder. "You go on ahead and look for this meaning you speak of. Come back and talk me through it once you've found it."
Barbara's family had been considerate in reserving a private space for them. In the afternoon, Hans brought Barbara over to welcome Li Du.
There was a new building on the ranch. Its style was simple, and it was to be Hans and Barbara's new home. At the sight of their new house, Li Du smiled and tossed a key and a land certificate to Hans. "Seems like my gift is a bit useless now."
Barbara took the items from him, then looked up at him at asked in confusion, "What's this?"
Hans knew even without looking. "Aren't you generous? A house?"
Stephen went over to peep at the certificate and surprise colored his face. "Good Lord, is this a villa at Beverly Hills? How much is it worth? Probably a few million, right?!"
This was the best of the houses Li Du had won in property auctions in the recent period of time. Its auction price alone was five million, but the property stood to rise in value. He could not think of a better wedding gift for Hans, so he chose the villa.
Li Du said, "Just think of it as a resort villa. You can't possibly stay here at the ranch all the time, right? You've got to take Barbara out to have fun once in a while, no?"
Hans chuckled. "What's so bad about staying at the ranch? I love it here so much, and the longer I stay here, the less I want to go out into the world."
"You're this close to attaining Buddhahood with how ascetic you are," Li Du said with his thumbs up. This was not the Hans he had known from before.
Barbara had a simple, a bit naïve disposition; she had little interest in money, preferring things she could own instead. This was the first time Li Du and Sophie were at their new house, a house that Barbara was rather proud of. She took the two of them around the house, giving them a room-by-room tour. Hans went along with them; he was steady and gentle, the smile never leaving his face
Looking at Hans, Li Du could not help but think about the past. Time was truly the greatest force on this earth. To think it could completely shape a person into someone else in a mere year.

Their loyalty was still strong despite knowing the truth. Their tribe only had a few Knights apparently before following James, now they were Knights born every generation and the weaker ones could live safely in the pocket world.

While his ragtag war division was coming into being James was hard at work studying and mastering the [Curse Binding Scripture].
I deepened my understanding of Fire, Soul, Electric, and Curse Dao. Every day I would forge a new curse weapon. This young lord was rich with souls. Might as well use them!
I fully immersed myself in Runeforging. It was a wondrous experience for me, this was the first time I truly enjoyed devilry. Time had no meaning and flew by. Now that I had a wealthy organization backing me, I had forging resources delivered to me daily.
Ah, the life of a prodigal young noble. Who needs to go work hard to get resources when your lackeys can do it for you?
Kyle even sent a personal attendant to see to my needs. I felt it was natural, these were the things I expected to have as a young lord.
My mindset was slowly changing. I no longer saw myself as a young noble. Now that I had an organization and followers, I saw myself as a young lord. A proper devil ruler.

This change in mentality was great for our young devil hero. He was reaching the age of adulthood, his childhood fantasies of being a prodigal son were being replaced with being a prodigal young lord. James desired personal power and strength to back his arrogance.
He was wholly independent of the Hudson clan; he looked forward to the day that [Libra] would overshadow [Mountain Shadow] as the most powerful organization in the Hudson clan.

The work I did forging the cursed rune weapons was not only rewarding to me but every single one I created deepened the understanding of the Daos.
I had even entered the Metal Dao after working with so many materials. I started with Tier-1 cursed weapons and slowly improved my craft until I could form a Tier-2 cursed weapon.
Every weapon I crafted would be different, they would take on their form from a combination of the Metals, Souls, and Dao Runes I carved within them. Each would have a connection to me. These weapons were alive, they hungered to find a mortal soul to beguile and degrade.
The best use of these would be to send them into a pocket world and watch the madness unfold. I could conqueror an unsuspecting world without a fight.
"Meow, that's the best part of cursed rune weapons! It is very difficult to invade stronger worlds."
"Meow, Cursed Rune Weapons could easily beguile an unsuspecting mortal soul giving you a chief agent to enact your will on an unsuspecting world."
I must forge a Baron Weapon and send it down to an unsuspecting Tier-2 world. According to Kyles reports, I should be able to purchase Tier-2 world coordinates in a few years.
"Listen! You should work on stepping into the Baron realm, the stupid book will teach you how to scry for worlds once you do. It desires many souls to repair itself."
The stupid book kept the lion's share of the souls from the Tutan World! I'm altering the deal next time I conquer a world.
"Meow, you forget the stupid book gave you the realm coordinates."
"Hey! The stupid book is fair."
I didn't have time to argue with the Codex Aspects. Through my deeper understanding of Soul Dao, I realized the Aspects were just unique personalities born of the Codex to serve its hosts.
They were the Codex, and the Codex was them. It was truly a remarkable artifact. All this time he was speaking to it with his conversations with the mischievous cat and the cute pixie.
"Meow, when you grow stronger you'll be able to create a personal Aspect within the Codex of Souls."
"Watch Out! He's way too weak to be thinking about creating an Aspect."
I worked hard day and night forging, increasing my Dao mastery. I had an armada of Tier-1 and Tier-2 cursed weapons now. Some poor unsuspecting world would soon be 'gifted' these prized weapons.
As my understanding of Curses and Souls grew, soon I was on the cusp of breaking into the Baron realm. I had spent an entire year in closed-door devilry.
Adding the year he spent in the Tutan World and the year I spent closed up studying mastering my Daos, I was now eighteen years old.
I would head out to do tasks from time to time, but mostly I spent my time holed up in my hut forging. Nothing would stop me from reaching the Baron realm!
I even got a notification when Wanfang broke through to Baron. As a young lord, I could not fall too far behind my followers. They would look down on me!
I forged my first Tier-3 cursed weapon after spending so much time mastering the [Curse Binding Scripture].
I took a few weeks of materials from the Tutan World supply for this one forging! It was time to make a glorious weapon.

"Now what should I do with this?" Mumbling silently, Seth walked along a corridor of the mansion, carrying a small box filled with elixirs meant for bone-tempering and organ-strengthening, given to him by his father. The value of the elixirs in this small box that can be easily carried under one arm, is enough for a common family to live without working for their entire lives. 

"The cultivation technique that I am using now already trains my flesh, organs, and bones, at a perfect ratio. If I start taking elixirs now, that ratio will be ruined, and my battle ability will decrease. ...Should I sell it?" 

Not many mortals know, that if any one of the three dimensions (flesh, organs, and bones) are too much stronger than the others, the overall performance of the body would decrease. 
If the flesh is too strong for the bones, then the bones can break with any intense movement.
If the bones are too dense compared to the flesh, the body's movements will become slower.
If the organs' performance is too high, then the body's metabolism will rise, putting a bigger strain on the flesh.
Et Cetera.

But if anyone in Haradur City heard what Seth had muttered just now, they would rush to capture, interrogate, and rob him! Why? That is because he had just implied that he has one of those extremely rare cultivation techniques that can train all three dimensions at the same time!

"I know! ...I'll give them to Nala. Although the cultivation technique that I gave her makes her a magic cultivator, since magic cultivators don't tend to make intense movements in battle, unlike martial cultivators, even if there is a bit of imbalance in their physiology, there shouldn't be much of a problem. "I took a good chunk of my time during the last 7 years seducing her. If someone disregards all my hard work and eats her, I'll kill them! ...Huh? Why would she be scared of me? Because she saw me dismember that idiot alive?"

In that case, should he send the boy to an immortal city, where his development would surely be much faster, leading him to greater heights? Or should he have the boy remain here, and be raised to be the next lord of the Zefer family? 

The plus side of the first option is that, as Seth's father, so long as the boy has any fidelity in him, then he will receive returns (resources) from his son when the boy reaches sufficient heights. These returns could very well be what he will need to reach the immortal stage himself. 
The negative side is that once he tastes the power that comes from being part of a large force from an immortal city, Seth would likely not want to part from it, and thus will not come back to the Zefer family. Even if he intended to do so, the force that he joins will not let him. With the boy's aggressive attitude, he could also provoke some calamity upon himself and get killed before he ever gets a chance to repay his father. 

The plus side of the second option is the greater chance of rising that their Zefer family will have if Seth stays here. Although that will slow his growth, it should bring more benefit to their family in the long run. He will have more protection and face less danger here than in an immortal city, thus making it more certain that he, his father, Merab Zefer, will receive his returns in the future.
The negative side is that he will have to wait longer for those potential returns. For a mortal martial cultivator, once past their prime, the longer they wait to make their attempt to break through to the immortal stage, the weaker they become after the breaking through. 

This is a problem that needs much consideration before a decision is made. 

Suddenly, the door slammed opened, and his wife, Lady Kesha burst in yelling, with her eyes red and her voice agitated. "Milord! What is the meaning of this!?"

"And what will I get out of that?" Merab Zefer heartlessly asked.

"What…" Lady Kesha's jaw dropped as she found it impossible to hide her shock.

"Fabin is already dead. The dead are of no use to me. Seth is still alive. He, has value. So, why should I harm that "value"?" He said matter-of-factly. 

"But, but… Fabin is your son. You must take revenge for him…" Stuttering, Lady Kesha didn't understand why she had to explain this. Shouldn't a father naturally take revenge for his son? What "value" is he talking about...

"Seth is also my son." 

"!" Hearing the name of her son's murderer, Lady Kesha grew enraged.

"That "thing" isn't human! He's a devil spawned out of that b*tch you picked up off the roadside!" Lady Kesha screamed. To her, Seth is a devil, and his mother who came from a weak family clan, is no different from the b*tches found in the city's brothels.
