Causing immediate excitement among Mrs. Bennet and her five daughters, Mr. Bingley, a wealthy young gentleman, has rented a nearby country estate, Netherfield. He arrives in town accompanied by his fashionable sister and his good friend, Mr. Darcy. While Bingley is well-received in the community, Darcy begins his acquaintance with smug condescension and proud distaste for all the “country” people. Bingley and Jane Bennet begin to grow close despite Mrs. Bennet’s embarrassing interference and the opposition of Bingley’s sister, who considers Jane socially inferior. Elizabeth is stung by Darcy’s haughty rejection of her at a local dance and decides to match his coldness with her own wit.

Elizabeth begins a friendship with Mr. Wickham, a militia officer who has a history with Darcy. Wickham claims that Darcy seriously mistreated him. Elizabeth immediately seizes upon this information as another reason to hate Darcy. Ironically, but unbeknownst to her, Darcy finds himself gradually drawn to Elizabeth.
Just as Bingley appears to be on the point of proposing marriage to Jane, he moves away from Netherfield, leaving Jane confused and upset. Elizabeth is convinced that Bingley’s sister has conspired with Darcy to separate Jane and Bingley.

Mr. Collins, a distant relative of the Bennets, makes an unexpected visit. He is a recently ordained clergyman employed by the wealthy Lady Catherine de Bourgh. On his way to visit his patron, Collins makes a visit, intending to find a wife from among the Bennet sisters. At first, he pursues Jane; however, when Mrs. Bennet mentions she is involved with Mr. Bingley, he turns to Elizabeth. He soon proposes marriage to Elizabeth, who refuses him, much to her mother’s distress. Collins quickly recovers and proposes to Elizabeth’s close friend, Charlotte Lucas, who immediately accepts him. Their marriage takes place soon after.

In the spring, Elizabeth joins Charlotte and Mr. Collins at his parish in Kent. The parish is adjacent to Rosings Park, the grand manor of Mr. Darcy’s aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, where Elizabeth is frequently invited. While calling on Lady Catherine, Mr. Darcy encounters Elizabeth. She discovers from Darcy’s cousin that it was he who separated Bingley and Jane, as she suspected. Soon after, Darcy admits his love of Elizabeth and proposes to her. Elizabeth refuses him. When he asks why she should refuse him, she confronts him with his sabotage of Bingley’s relationship with Jane and his history with Wickham. Darcy responds with a long letter justifying his actions.

Thus, everything is set up to bring to conclusion the various love affairs—happily, or perhaps unhappily. Whatever the various resolutions, Darcy, Bingley, Jane, Elizabeth, as well as others, will need to overcome their pride and prejudices if they are to find love in the midst of these uncertain and complex relationships.

The three inhabitants of the mansion sit together in the living room, the snow outside glistening. Each present is handed out, placed in a pile next to each individual.
“Riley, open your first present.” Maryanne returns to her seat on the couch, near Max.
Riley sits cross-legged on the ground in front of the two adults.
She bounces around giggling as she grabs the first box.
Rifling through each present, Riley giggles and squeals every time she sees what she was gifted. Maryanne gave her a fairy princess indoor tent, as well as a few dolls and an indoor slide. Max on the other hand had bought her a tablet to play learning games on, a large remote control car that she can ride around in, and a makeshift ball pit.
	Max chuckles as Riley runs around, “Looks like she enjoyed them all.”
	Maryanne nods, “I’m very glad you didn’t go over the agreed upon budget.”
	Displaying mock shock, Max folds his arms, “Of course, you asked me not to.”
	“Here, open you presents.” Maryanne turns so that her attention is completely on him. Riley ignores them, playing with her new doll.
	Max shakes his head, “You should be the next to open.”
	“I asked you first,” Maryanne shrugs, folding her own arms and leaning back.
	“Really,” he chuckles. They stare at one another for a moment until Max gives in, “Alright.”
	As he tears into the first present, Maryanne rushes to say, “I know we didn’t place a budget or anything, I hope you like them.”
	He pauses, looking up at her and smiling, “They’re presents from you. Of course I’ll like them.”
	Maryanne glances back down at her arms, heat bursting into her cheeks.
	Once the box is free of the wrapping paper, Max flips the lid open. Within the confines is a sleek, knitted scarf that is varying shades of grey. Max pulls it out, his mouth slowly falling open. “Maryanne, this is amazing. Did you make this yourself?”
	“Yes,” she murmurs without making eye contact. She watches him from the corner of her eye, too shy to completely look at his reaction.
	“It must’ve taken a lot of time.”
	Maryanne nods, “I worked on it every night before bed for the last month.”
	Max sighs, placing the scarf around his neck almost immediately, “That’s a lot, thank you. I really do love it.”
	“You’re welcome.”
	He sets the box to the side before working on one of the smaller presents. As the wrapping paper falls away, a book is revealed.
	Max turns it around in his hands, “Pride and Prejudice?”
	Embarrassment wracks her nerves with the worry that he won’t like the gift. “I know you said you loved the book growing up. I’m sure you already have it, but I wanted to get you a nice, leatherbound version. They even engraved your name on the inside. A first edition was too expensive for me, unfortunately.”
	Max stares at the cover, his mouth hanging open. When he regains his words, he says, “Maryanne. . . I don’t know what to say. It’s very sweet.”
	“It’s nothing really. I have a lot of connections within the writing community.” She tries to laugh off her awkwardness. She waves him on, “Open your last one.”
	Gently setting the book on the end table, Max turns to his final gift. He opens this one more slowly and th anticipation eats away at Maryanne. She fights the urge to hurry him on.
“Maryanne,” Max breathes out. In his hand is an elegant, small picture frame with a photo of the three of them tucked within.
	She explains leaning forward, “It was the picture we took a few months ago.”
	He shifts as he remembers, “Oh yeah, I remember. Geneva wanted a picture for the wall in the living room.”
	“Yes, actually I asked her so that we could get the picture without you knowing that I wanted it.”
	Max’s expression softens and he looks over at Maryanne who avoids his gaze, “It’s so sweet, thank you. I love every gift.”
	Maryanne rushes to grab her first present, her face a ball of fiery heat. “Okay, I’ll open mine now.”
	Max reaches his hand out, causing her to pause momentarily, but not look up. “Remember, you never specified a budget for gifts to each other.”
	Now Maryanne does make eye contact, her chest quivering, “Max, I swear. . .”
	He only smiles and drops his hand so that she can continue opening the box.
	Maryanne is shocked as she opens the present and reveals a Louis Vuitton crocodile purse. It is large, more than she even needs. She breathes out, “It’s beautiful.”
	“I saw that the purse you’re using now is falling apart so I wanted to make sure you had a well-made one.”
	She musters up a grateful smile, “Thank you.” Although she is uncertain how to feel about him buying her the purse, she tries to be understanding.
	Maryanne’s second gift is an envelope and she slightly frowns as she opens it. “What’s this? Defense class training.” The letter inside is a confirmation for classes paid for.
	“Yes, you refuse to allow a bodyguard to watch over you, so I signed you up for the best defense class in the area that I could find.”
	“Max. Now frustration erupts within her muscles and she bites back her anger.
	He tilts his head, trying to lock eyes with her, “What?”
	“That was unnecessary.”

	As Riley plays in her room with her other presents, Maryanne stands in front of Max. Her anger is boiling, but she tries to remain calm. She stares at her new bag. It really is nice. She is truly thankful, but she doesn’t believe Max should have spent so much money on her, especially for the defense classes.
	Max checks once more on Riley making sure that she is still playing before turning back toward Maryanne and folding his arms.
	“What is the big problem about the gifts I gave you?”
	“Max, first, the bag alone costs almost home much I make a year. Not to mention the classes. The courses I just googled have a steep price. More than I ever could afford.”
	He tries to reason, “That’s why I bought them. I only want the best but knew you would never willingly spend the money.”
	Maryanne tries to hold her anger at bay, “Max, Christmas is about sentiment. These gifts aren’t that at all. They’re very impersonal.”
	“Maryanne, I thought very hard about what to get you. I didn’t want to get you something you couldn’t use. The bag will last you a long time.”
	“I appreciate that. Believe me, I love the bag, but a simple one that you could have bought at a smaller company, or even a local business would have been a lot more meaningful than getting this expensive one from a high-end fashion company.”
	Tension continues to build in Max’s shoulders as he speaks. His brow tightens, “Why are you so upset about this? Maryanne, it’s only a gift. I tried to keep my spending at a limit because I know you don’t like that.”
	Maryanne holds back her anger, but frustration at the situation continues to overflow, “You still spent an insane amount of money, Maxwell.”
	“Maryanne, it’s two gifts. You spent a good chunk on my Pride and Prejudice book.”
	“But that price doesn’t come anywhere near what you spent.” Maryanne’s body refuses to listen to her commands, tightening with the stress of the situation.
	“Maryanne, just be thankful. I spend the time and energy choosing your gifts.”
	As Max turns away to storm off, Maryanne realizes that she messed up.

Interrupted by the sound of Ben's voice, Payton and J.D. looked over and saw him standing in his doorway.
"Shall we?" Ben gestured for them to join him in his office.
J.D. caught Payton's eye as they headed inside, seeming to find Ben's interruption as inconvenient as she. They had barely taken their seats in front of the desk when Ben got right down to business.
"So I got a call from Jasper this morning," he began. "Apparently they've had a little shake-up in the Gibson's legal department. He fired the general counsel—probably a smart move since the guy obviously didn't do a very good job of preventing this mess they're in. The new GC started on Monday and, not surprisingly, is eager to meet with some of the people at our firm who will be working on the case. Jasper specifically asked whether either—or both—of you might possibly be free to fly down tomorrow for a meet and greet with him and the new general counsel. He acknowledged that this was short notice, but said he thought that since tomorrow is Friday, there was a chance the two of you might be free in the evening from your other work commitments."
Ben cleared his throat. "Obviously, Jasper isn't aware of the situation here, that one of you will not be continuing on in this matter. And I think it's best that he not be made aware of that fact until the partnership decision has been announced." Leaning back in his chair, he sighed melodramatically. "Given the circumstances, I find it a little awkward to ask you two to do this. Although, with the decision being this close—"
"I'll go," J.D. said.
Ben stopped and looked over. He appeared pleased by the definitiveness with which J.D. had responded. "Good." He nodded his approval, then turned. "What do you say, Payton?"
She could feel J.D.'s eyes on her as she answered.
"I'll go, too."
Ben smiled. "Great. I'll call Jasper and let him know to expect you both." He glanced over at J.D. "You get there early enough, Jameson, you might even be able to squeeze in a round. Palm Beach has some great courses. I think the last time I was there was over three years ago. We went in May and it was nearly ninety degrees. And humid as all hell." He pointed. "You two better prepare yourselves. It's going to be a hot and steamy trip."
It took every ounce of Payton's strength not to react to that.

THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT set Payton's meal down in front of her.
"And one vegetarian entree for you," she said efficiently before turning to serve lunch to the passengers across the aisle.
Seated next to Payton, J.D. didn't even bother to look up from his Wall Street Journal.
"Vegetarian? Now there's a surprise."
"About as surprising as you turning first to the financial section of the paper."
J.D. shrugged. "So? I have a few investments."
"I have investments. You have a portfolio," Payton emphasized.
J.D. felt the need to set the record straight. He put down his paper and turned in his seat to face her.
"Payton, I have to tell you something, and I know this is going to come as a shock, but it's better you hear it now." He leaned in consolingly. "You have money." He shook his head. What a shame.
Payton waved this off. "Please. You have money. I have a job that pays well. There's a difference."
"We make the same exact salary."
"But you have an extravagant lifestyle."
J.D. laughed at that. Did he now? Maybe in her eyes, he supposed. She was a walking contradiction and completely oblivious to that fact.
"You have five-hundred-dollar shoes," he pointed out.
"Not anymore."
J.D. cleared his throat. Probably best if they just moved on to another topic.
He watched as Payton picked at her sandwich, some sprouty/all-natural/no-taste concoction. Since they were flying business class, they had seats together, just the two of them. They could talk about anything and not be overheard, although so far Payton's conversation with him throughout the flight had consisted entirely of business-related talk and/or sass. Perhaps it was time to shake things up.
"So . . . you didn't say why you broke up with Chase."
"You're right, I didn't say."
"Are you avoiding the subject?"
Payton put her sandwich down and turned to face him. "Why don't we talk about you for a change?"
Realizing he really needed to refine his subject-changing skills, J.D. struck a nonchalant look. "What about me?"
"Well, you're thirty-two years old—"
"The same age as you."
"—and still single," she finished. "Aren't you supposed to be married by now to a Muffy or a Bitsy or some other society type with a brain as big as this pickle?"
J.D. peered over. "That's a pretty big pickle."
Payton smiled. "So? What gives?"
J.D. couldn't help but look as, while waiting for his answer, Payton crossed one high-heeled leg over the other, notably in his direction. Did she know the effect she had on him? He suspected she did. It was a little dance they did, the way they both conspicuously avoided talking about what had happened in her apartment the other night. He had a feeling that there was more behind her "innocent" questions regarding his love life than she wanted to let on. But he had no intention of cutting the game short. Not yet, anyway. Seeing that she still waited for his answer, J.D. shrugged. "I guess I've just been focused on things at work." He watched as Payton nodded. This she could understand.
Now that the subject of work had been raised, the conversation drifted onto a safer topic: their upcoming meeting with Jasper and his new general counsel. In appreciation of the fact that Payton and J.D. had agreed to fly down to Florida on such short notice, Jasper had suggested, for their convenience, that they meet for dinner at their hotel. J.D. could certainly think of worse places to spend a Friday evening than at the Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach. Putting aside all partnership/career advancement issues, one of the main reasons he had so quickly agreed to the trip was because he knew Payton similarly would never pass up the opportunity.
Payton asked him what information, if any, he had been able to uncover about the lawyer Jasper had hired to be Gibson's new general counsel. J.D. reached into his briefcase for the file he had thrown together earlier that morning when he stopped at the office before heading off to the airport.
Strangely, he discovered something in his briefcase that he had not put there.
A book.
Confused—and with the momentary thought that he was going to be really f**king pissed if this was some sort of South Florida drug-mule scam that would land him in jail and cut into his posh Ritz-Carlton relaxation time—J.D. pulled out the book.
Pride and Prejudice.
It bore a Post-it note, unsigned, that read:
In case of an emergency. Trust me.
J.D. rolled his eyes. Oh, for crying out loud. He had told Tyler about the trip with Payton and his "helpful" friend must have slipped the book into his carry-on when he'd stepped out of his office.
Just as he was about to stuff the silly girly tome back into his briefcase, Payton glanced over.
"Oh, you brought a book? What are you reading?" She leaned over, saw the title, then peered up at J.D. with an expression of unmistakable surprise. "Pride and Prejudice? Wow. I wouldn't have guessed that was your kind of book."
J.D. immediately went on the defensive. "Come on, do you really think . . ." His words trailed off as Payton leaned back languidly in her seat with a dreamy, faraway look.
"Mr. Darcy . . ." She sighed wistfully. She distractedly put her pen in her mouth—J.D. noticed a little flush to her cheeks—and without even realizing it, she slowly slid the pen in and out between her lips.
In and out.
"Fitzwilliam Darcy and his ten thousand a year . . ." she said, still dreamy.
J.D. had no idea what she was talking about, but he couldn't help but stare. The pen. The lips. In and out.
In and out.
Tyler was a f**king genius.
With a blink, Payton came out of her reverie. Most unfortunately.
"Sorry. What were we talking about?" she asked, a little breathless.
Clearing his throat, J.D. held up the book. "Pride and Prejudice?"
Payton smiled fondly. "Yes. It's one of my favorites."
"I caught that. Gotta love that"—J.D. quickly stole a glance at the back cover—"Elizabeth Bennet."
This seemed to wake Payton up. "Well, of course," she said, not unlike Tyler, as if only a Neanderthal wouldn't be in the know. "Elizabeth Bennet is only one of the greatest literary heroines of all time."
J.D. could see she was beginning to get all riled up and lecture-y again. Not that he particularly minded. "Is that so?"
"Yes, that's so. She's clever, witty, bold, and independent. True, she can be a bit proud, some would say she's far too sassy for her time, and she's definitely judgmental, but still—that's why we love her."
J.D. cocked his head. "Well. I guess that settles that."
Payton grinned, a little embarrassed. "Sorry. I can get kind of carried away talking about that book." She paused, remembering. "Weren't you going to show me the information you pulled on Gibson's new general counsel?"
Back to business. J.D. handed Payton the file he had compiled and she began to read through it. But after a few minutes of working in silence, she cast a sideways glance in his direction.
"Still . . . it is kind of a wussy read for a guy, Jameson." With a sly half smile, she turned back to her reading.
J.D. didn't bother to dignify that with a response. But after a few minutes had passed, he subtly glanced over and watched Payton as she worked.
Proud and sassy, no doubt. And definitely judgmental.
But still.
PAYTON STOOD IN front of the closet in her underwear, scrutinizing her dress for wrinkles. She was relieved to see it had survived the plane trip relatively unscathed because (a) she had absolutely zero skill when it came to using an iron and (b) there wasn't time to iron anyway because she was supposed to meet J.D. in the hotel bar downstairs in five minutes.
This was business, she kept reminding herself. She and J.D. were here, at the luxurious Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach, just steps from the white-sand beach and the cerulean blue water of the Atlantic Ocean, on business.
She had stayed in nice hotels before, of course. Plenty of them. One of the perks of working for a top-tier firm was that its lawyers were expected to stay—for image purposes—at top-tier hotels when traveling. It also wasn't the first time she'd traveled on business on a Friday evening, and it certainly wasn't the first time she'd traveled with a male coworker.
But.

Payton Kendall and J.D. Jameson are lawyers who know the meaning of objection. A feminist to the bone, Payton has fought hard to succeed in a profession dominated by men. I exit the dorm, and head straight to mine. I'm still processing what happened. I quietly enter, and head straight to the cabinet. I grab some ingredients and start brewing a potion for sobering up, so I can think clearly. I start mixing then take a drink. To anyone else it would burn, but it just feels like warm soup to me. About 10 minutes later, I'm sober enough to know what happened. I'm so tempted to text Audrey but then I hear a knock on the door. I head over and open it, to see Audrey standing there in shambles. She can barely stand and tears are streaming down from her cheeks. 

"Stella, I need help" she says. Her face is different than usual. I've only seen her like this once. At my party. I help her over to the couch and pour her some of my concoction. We sit in silence. She leans her head on my shoulder.


"I believe you" I say under my breath.


"About what?" she says.
"My dad." 

"Why do you believe me now?"


"The look on your face. It was the same" I say then I turn to look at her. "I don't wanna see that look again." I say in a caring tone. She starts crying harder. "Hey, Hey don't cry." I say as I lift her head up and wipe away a tear from her cheek.


"I deserve this. I've been such a bitch to everyone. This is my fault" she says as she hugs me.


"NO! No one deserves this. Especially not you. Audrey you were there for me when no one else was. You're my best friend. No matter what happened you will always be." I say, as I start crying even harder. I pull back. "And Brian is totally getting his dick chopped off" I say as I pull her closer. We sit crying for a few minutes. I finally decide we have cried enough.


"Wanna watch a movie?" I say.
"Which one?" she says, wiping her tears.

"Hmm.... How about Pride and Prejudice?"


"Sure." she says, as she grabs a pillow and curls up into a little ball. She's cute when she does that. "You know what I'd love? A humanity switch. Just turn off all feelings. Demons have them, don't they?" she says while staring at the TV.


"No, no you don't." I say as I head over to the couch "They don't work. You think you have no emotions, but really all you have is anger left. You do things you'll regret." I say, as I start the movie. I turn my head to look at her. We stare into each other's eyes. I've never noticed how much of a stunning blue her eyes are. Like the Arctic Ocean. We break contact and stare at the screen as she snuggles closer to me eventually falling asleep. I lightly get up and cover her with a blanket and head to my room. I really hope she's okay in there. Her head must be all sorts of scrambled. If I could have stopped it, I would have...
But I couldn't.....

Rebecca gave her a pleading look. Must she say it out loud?
Ryn kept giving her a puzzled look. She did not understand what Rebecca meant by it. Was she apologizing on behalf of Irene for what Irene said that day? Had she become so muddleheaded and just followed whatever Irene wanted?
"Ryn... I..."
"Is there anything I should forgive you with?" Ryn cut her words and asked her back.
Rebecca sank her upper teeth onto her plump bottom lip. Her mind quickly arranged words for her to speak.
"I'm sorry for what Irene... and all of us said," Rebecca said finally, after taking another deep breath to gain her courage.
Ryn shook her head in bemused. She was right. Rebecca took it upon herself to apologize for Irene. Where was Rebecca dignity and pride? Why would she lower herself just for the sake of Irene?
"Don't you think it is more appropriate for her to apologize in person rather than having you throwing away your dignity and pride for that selfish woman?" Ryn rested her chin on her hand and looked at the flustered Rebecca with twinkling eyes.
Rebecca jerked backwards at Ryn's words. Her jaw dropped. Her watery eyes even went wider, which Ryn thought was impossible. Ryn subconsciously wondered if Rebecca's eyes could go even wider but she did not say anything about it.
"I didn't know you've got to be her faithful follower when you're joining her," Ryn made a quote sign and said, "group. You just allow her to boss you around."
"Bossing? No, I didn't," Rebbecca denied but the way her expression looked showed how in denial she was.
"Ups to you. It's not my life and it's not related to me. Do whatever makes you happy," Ryn shrugged.
Rebecca wanted to drink to cover her nervousness but she found that it was empty and she forgot to ask for a refill. She put it down awkwardly and tried to giggle to cover her nervousness.
But it was obvious.
Ryn stood up and took the glass with her to the kitchen. Without a word, she refilled the glass, giving time for Rebecca to ponder about it. 
"Just take your time," Ryn murmured. She did not quickly return to the sofa where Rebecca was. Instead, she leaned against the kitchen cabinet and started to daydream.
She was thinking about the time when she was still young. She just started to be Mika's friend and Mika, just like Irene, was expecting her to follow Mika's every whim. In the end, Mika was shocked when Ryn simply ignored her demand and ignored her completely. 
Ryn was so used to be left alone, she did not feel anything when being isolated by the students in the school.. Having hippy parents made it hard for her to make friends. No one could understand her situation and no one actually cared. They did not try to understand why she was being different from the rest of them. Even the teachers who were supposed to treat their students equally and without prejudice could not stop themselves from laughing behind her back. 
She knew and accepted it unwillingly. How could she change her parents to be normal like other parents when they were so determined to keep hold onto their way and belief? 
She could not even eat meat because since young her parents drummed it into her head that eating anything that used to have life was like eating another human being. Life was precious and should not be treated cheaply like food. everything she wore and ate was based on plants. She did not even own a deodorant. Everything was au natural. 
Luckily for her, she did not smell bad. 
Ryn unconsciously smiled at the thought of Mika, once realising she could not control her, went back and apologized. Mika even promised to change herself so that her behaviour would not hurt their budding relationship. 
Truthfully, even until now, Ryn had no idea why Mika was so determined to be her friend. It was weird but at the same time, Ryn was grateful for finally having a person she could call a friend. She was no longer alone. 
Their friendship, of course, created rumours and such a scandalous thing happening and Ryn, being the poor student, received all the accusations. She was called a gold digger, materialistic, opportunist, and so many other names Ryn was too lazy to remember but at that time she was hurt. she did nothing but being friend with Mika and was treated like a criminal. 
But it did not stop or end their friendship. In fact, it strengthened it. Mika was more determined to keep their friendship stronger and stronger. Hence the introduction to the most popular and handsome boy in the school, Mika's own older brother, Jeremy. 
Ryn sighed a bit at the memory. It was full of happiness, sadness and everything in between. She really missed those moments. She wished she could turn back time and experience everything all over again.
"Ryn."
Her reminisce session was interrupted again by Rebecca's voice. 
Ryn looked at the other woman and lifted an eyebrow. Had Rebecca had enough time to process what she just said?
"You are wrong," Rebecca spoke. 
She was hugging herself tightly as if she was trying to tell herself she was right and Ryn was the one in the wrong. Ryn accused them wrongly.
"Wrong?"
"We are not Irene's followers or lackeys. We are her friends. And as friends, it's our job and responsibility to help each other," Rebecca cried. 
Ryn simply smiled. She turned around to pour out the already warm water into the sink. It was left out on the open quite long and no longer fresh. Ryn ran the glass under the water before pouring it with cold water from the refrigerator. 
"So, as Irene's friend, it is my responsibility to help her," Rebecca put a hand against her chest to emphasize each word she spoke. 
But the seriousness turned into a puzzle when Ryn handed the glass of water. She looked at Ryn in questioning.
"Is that so?"
Rebecca nodded her head rather violently. Her hands even shook a bit resulting from the movement and making the water filling in the glass until it almost drips out. Rebecca, realising her mistake, quickly put the glass down onto the counter. She did not want to make the covered floor wet.
Ryn poured herself a glass of water and walked back to the living room calmly. Rebecca followed behind. Well, she had to retrace her steps to retrieve her drink but soon enough she found herself sitting on the same sofa, facing Ryn.
"Rebecca, why are you so flustered when I said you've become Irene's follower? If you are really her friend and she treats you like a friend, why are you so nervous and frustrated when you're explaining to me just now?" Ryn asked slowly.
Rebecca was taken back with the questions. She did not realize her weird reaction.


On the surface, Ryn looked like a normal quiet girl who only focused on her study and did not even bother
about things outside her study. However, the whole campus was shocked to know she was actually a
popular model who just made a comeback after two years 'retired'. To make them more shocked when a
very popular singer, Jeremy was her ex-boyfriend and now wanted her back. Of course, to add the spice in her life, a model who is her university's mate fell in love with her.
Now she had to choose between these two, as well as balancing her life as a boring student but an exciting model.

“Sign this contract.” He nudged the contract toward her.

“Can I think first?” she asked weakly.

“Five seconds.” Jack felt generous and gave her time to think. “See how good my mood is today?”

Racism is the result of the presence of race as a social construct paired with the already existing prejudice and power structure.

Racial social construct + prejudice + power = racism

Now, you may notice that this is a different equation from the one you might be seeing on Instagram, which is:

Prejudice + power = racism

I don't like that equation because without identifying the construct in the equation this could represent anything since prejudice and power are broad terms that can be applied to many forms of hatred. For example:

Prejudice + power = sexism 

Prejudice + power = anti-semitism

Prejudice + power = homophobia

Every single one of these equations are correct because prejudice and power are both terms heavily present in all of these forms of hate. What makes racism uniquely racism, is the race component. Don't forget that. Racism depends on race.

There's also some other equations that fit the racism model, such as:

Racial social construct + discrimination + prejudice + power = racism

Racial social construct + abuse + prejudice + power = racism

Racial social construct + discrimination + abuse + prejudice + power = racism

Try to think of my initial racism equation as a base equation and the others as add-on equivalents. 

Okay, this is getting too mathy and I know some of y'all don't like math, so I'll move on.

Racism made its way into every crevice in society. Our social systems, political systems, justice systems, school systems, everything. The United States, in particular, has abused race as a social construct and implements it everywhere, thus allowing racism here to run more rampant and intense than it does in other countries. Race is found to be the basis of everything in American society and it is extremely toxic because with race comes racism.

Racism is not a black and white concept. It's not as simple as being racist or not racist because racism exists on a spectrum. Let me elaborate:

"Racism is an epistemology (the way to gather knowledge) that has been inculcated through a curriculum and societal system...I too promote a white supremacist agenda." -Pran Patel

In this quote, Pran Patel basically acknowledges that due to racism being a social construct so heavily ingrained into every aspect of our society that we all promote a white supremacist agenda. Race is everywhere and because of which starting off as children we are inadvertently exposed to ideas of hate leading to implicit bias, microaggressions, and ignorance amongst other things. Even six month old babies can begin to racially categorize people. So, even if you aren't blatantly racist, just the way we grow up in American society has instilled small bits of racism in each and every one of us. That's why it is better referred to as a spectrum in which one will never be not racist.

I know it's a little jarring and probably uncomfortable. I know many pride themselves in the idea that they aren't racists and that they are better people than those who are, but you're wrong. No matter how "woke" you think you are, you're a little racist. We all are. As upsetting as it might be to accept that, you also need to know that it is totally possible to do better.

None of us will ever be 100% not racist at any point in our lives no matter how hard we try, but we can at least acknowledge that as time goes on and we all learn more, we can get better and move down the spectrum. Honestly, it's something to be proud of because humans actually have an inclination to move further up the spectrum. Even though racism isn't necessarily inherent to human nature, prejudice is and it helps fuel people towards that right end of the spectrum. Being able to disregard our natural inclinations for prejudice and move towards the left side of the spectrum one bit at a time is something to be proud about.

Due to the nature of the human brain and how malleable it is, even the introduction of racism into our society causes deep psychological effects for everyone. Like, how even as toddlers, humans are able to pick up on the social cues that place importance of one race over another and start implementing that bias in their brains. Or how POCs who are poorly represented in media have lowered self-esteem just by watching television due to being bombarded with the over-representation of groups that are not themselves. Or how extreme racism, hate crimes, and disadvantages result in trauma, which is present in many POCs and several of these cases technically qualify as PTSD, but many people don't realize that or think it's not important because they think PTSD is only for soldiers. 

It's for these reasons and many more that racism is not just hate. It's a cancer to our society. A disease that needs to be removed because it infects everything. It infects every system we have, our daily lives, our brains, our humanity. Everything it touches is changed for the worse.

First off: I apologize for the novel genre category. Obviously this isn’t realistic fiction and is a harsh reality. This site just isn’t really geared towards non-fiction and none of the pre-set genres describe my book well enough.

Anyway, I've created this education series in aims of teaching people about the important things in life that they never really learned. Our education system is so faulted that we aren't learning the right things to be successful in life and live happily.

The first of this series is this book regarding race and racism. This book discusses what race and racism are, how they relate, how they impact POCs, and how we can combat these negative effects through education and embracing anti-racism.

As I sat down on my Literature Class, my all eyes and ears ate focused infront. Lecturing about a novel entitled 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen. All must say, she is very talented, isn't she. A masterpiece I guess.

"so class, Pride and Prejudice is set primarily in the county of Hertfordshire, about 50 miles outside of London. The story centers on the the Bennet family, particularly Elizabeth. The novel opens at Longbourn, the Bennet family's estate. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet have five children: Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia. The family engages in a conversation about Mr. Bingley, "a single man of large fortune" who will be renting the nearby estate of Netherfield Park. Mrs. Bennet sees Mr. Bingley as a potential suitor for one of her daughters. The Bennets first meet Mr. Bingley and his companions at the Meryton Ball. The townspeople conclude that Mr. Bingley is perfectly amiable and agreeable. Meanwhile, Mr. Bingley takes an immediate liking to Jane Bennet. Mr. Bingley's friend Mr. Darcy, however, snubs Elizabeth. The community decides that Darcy is proud and disagreeable because of his reserve and his refusal to dance. Jane finds Bingley's sisters - Caroline and Mrs. Hurst - to be amiable, but Elizabeth sees them as arrogant."

My classmates are very focused infront, because like me, they are interested about the novel. Literature course, is such a suitable for me. I son't know but this one is so very refreshing. But my bubble imagination popped when my professor call me. 

" So, Ms. El Henry, please give is some of your reactions about this novel of Jane Austen". 

As I stood up, all of my classmates focused on me, waitung for my reaction about the novel. 

"Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is such a very impression and wonderful masterpiece and timeless. Like Darcy comes to love Elizabeth sincerely by the end of the novel therefore because she is one of the only women to stand up to him and to teach him a lesson that leads to true development in his character. This builds on his earlier favourable impressions of Elizabeth to form a solid, lasting regard and love towards her."

" So you're sating effort is one the mixture of the lasting regard and love to the people like the characters situation in the Novel? " My professor ask. 

" Yes, Prof. "I agreed

" Why can you say? Support your side" 

"Lasting love has to be built on mutual regard and respect. It is about seeing the other person or other people. I am very interested in relationships and, when I watch couples,observing people sometimes in their simple eye contacts will saw the effortless love that they have. the ideal state of romantic love and without a whole lot of rational thoughts you typically attempt to secure the object of your passion by putting their wants and needs ahead of your own. It's as though you're saying to yourself: "So I can make you mine, I'll make fulfilling your desires even more important than my own." It called a selfless love. You do all of your best to fulfill the love for your partner or to other people." I feel the intensity amd more focused on my classmates because of my words. Same as my professor that nodding while I'm saying all I want to say. As I continue what I'm saying, I saw Andrei outside of our classroom but it isn't time yet. He's eyes widened and all eyes and ears on me too. I continue speaking. 

"And whether or not you're aware of it, the "deal" you're making to maximize the odds that the one who's endeared themselves to you will return this endearment involves a considerable amount of manipulation. That is, your efforts could hardly be described as disinterested. As generous in spirit as your "giving" relational stance might appear, it yet includes a crucial contingency clause. Hopeful about enamoring yourself to your beloved, you're essentially proposing a this-for-that, give-to-get, exchange. So even though to an outside observer your behavior might seem selfless or self-sacrificing, it's actually an intuitive, and quite clever, way of "captivating" someone whose value you're assessing as, well, invaluable. That's all Ma'am, Thank you" As I finished my recitation, my classmates clap their hands and gave me a thumbs up because, I don't know, jabe a point? "

" That's very impressive Ms. El Henry, but I have a last question. "my professor said. 

"What is it Ma'am?"

"Are you inlove?" 

My classmates tease me because of it and blush at the same time.

"I think, it's yes" after I answer that, my eyes flew in Andrei, waiting outside. As he saw me eyeing him, he smiled back at me. 

After that our class dismissed but my classmate started to tease me and curious about who's the lucky guy.
