Soo Yin masih berbaring melepas lelah dengan lengan Dae Hyun yang digunakan sebagai bantalan. Otaknya belum bisa berpikir jernih dengan apa yang baru saja mereka lakukan di pagi hari.


"Bagaimana dengan hukuman yang aku berikan? Apa kau menyukainya?" Dae Hyun mengubah posisinya dari telentang menjadi miring. Tangannya terulur menyingkirkan anak rambut yang berantakan di wajah cantik yang mampu membuatnya selalu menginginkannya.


"Mana ada hukuman semacam ini?" Soo Yin mencebikkan bibirnya tapi sorot matanya bersinar, menunjukkan jika dia menikmati pagi ini.


"Itu adalah hukuman terbaru yang akan aku berikan jika kau nakal," ujar Dae Hyun sembari terkekeh.


"Kalau begitu aku akan membuatmu marah sepanjang waktu," ujar Soo Yin sambil mencubit pinggang Dae Hyun yang pura-pura merintih kesakitan.


"Tidak masalah, sepanjang waktu aku akan menghukummu." Dae mencubit hidung Soo Yin karena merasa gemas.


Soo Yin memandang ke arah jendela. Samar-samar terlihat matahari yang semakin cerah bersinar.

"Pergilah mandi terlebih dahulu. Ini sudah siang, aku tidak ingin ada yang datang," ujar Soo Yin.


"Baiklah, kenapa kita tidak mandi bersama agar mempersingkat waktu?" 


"Tidak, aku tidak akan melakukannya." Soo Yin segera menjauhkan tubuhnya.


"Maksudku, kau mandi di dalam dan aku di luar," ujar Dae Hyun. Menggelengkan kepalanya karena istri kecilnya pasti sudah berpikiran yang tidak-tidak.


"Baiklah." Soo Yin beringsut menepi ke sisi 

ranjang sambil menahan nyeri bagian tertentu di tubuhnya.

Tanpa pikir panjang Soo Yin segera masuk ke kamar mandi sebelum Dae Hyun menginginkannya kembali. Dirinya harus cepat mengganti pakaiannya.


Setelah lima belas menit kemudian, mereka sudah selesai mandi. Dae Hyun sudah mengenakan bajunya Sedangkan Soo Yin masih duduk di depan cermin untuk mengeringkan rambutnya yang basah.


"Sepertinya setiap pagi harus seperti ini agar membuatku lebih bersemangat," ujar Dae Hyun sembari menatap Soo Yin di pantulan cermin.


"Aku tidak mau lagi," ucap Soo Yin sambil mengulum senyum.


Tok … tok … tok ….

Terdengar bunyi ketukan pintu dari luar ruangan.


"Siapa itu?" Soo Yin sontak bangkit berdiri. Mengambil bajunya yang berserakan di ranjang. Dengan cepat memakai semuanya karena ketakutan.


"Tidak usah terburu-buru, tidak akan ada yang berani masuk," ujar Dae Hyun dengan santai. Ia meraih ponselnya yang berada di atas meja. Lalu mencari nomor yang akan dihubungi olehnya.


"Asisten Chang, tolong lihat siapa yang berada di luar. Katakan padanya jika aku sedang sibuk sehingga tidak ingin diganggu," ujar Dae Hyun yang berbicara dengan seseorang di telepon.


"Baik, Tuan."


Setelah berbicara singkat, Dae Hyun mematikan sambungan telepon.


Ketukan pintu terus terdengar hingga Soo Yin merasa khawatir jika itu adalah Park Ji Hoon. Ia merasa malu jika ketahuan oleh ayah mertuanya.


"Sayang, siapa sebenarnya yang berada di luar? Kenapa tidak berhenti juga?" ujar Soo Yin yang sedang mengeringkan rambutnya. Bajunya sudah dipakai meskipun kusut dan berantakan.

"Bagaimana jika yang berada di luar adalah ayah?" imbuhnya sambil membalikkan tubuhnya ke arah Dae Hyun.


"Tidak mungkin, itu pasti hanya seorang karyawan saja," ujar Dae Hyun.


"Tidak mungkin jika itu adalah karyawan. Mereka tidak akan berani mengetuk pintu sesering itu," ujar Soo Yin sembari menggigit bibir bawahnya. Ia memiliki firasat buruk tentang ini.


"Tetaplah di sini, aku akan keluar sebentar." Dae Hyun mengusap pundak Soo Yin terlebih dahulu sebelum melangkahkan keluar dan menutup pintu rapat-rapat.


"Sebenarnya dimana Asisten Chang? Bukankah aku sudah mengatakan jika sedang sibuk," gerutu Dae Hyun sambil terus melangkah. Dilihatnya benda yang melingkar di tangannya. Sekarang sudah pukul sembilan. Ternyata lumayan lama mereka di dalam hingga tidak sadar.


Dae Hyun merogoh kunci dari saku celananya kemudian segera membuka pintu.


"Ibu?"

Dae Hyun begitu terkejut melihat ibunya dan Aeri ada di depan pintu. Ada juga Chang Yuan yang berada di belakang mereka, sepertinya sudah berusaha mengatakan tapi tidak berhasil.


"Dae Hyun, sebenarnya apa yang kau lakukan? Kenapa lama sekali keluarnya?" ujar Ny. Park sembari menautkan kedua alisnya.


"Aku memang sedang agak sibuk memeriksa laporan keuangan bulanan, Bu. Itu membutuhkan konsentrasi tinggi sehingga aku tidak ingin diganggu," ujar Dae Hyun.

"Ada apa kalian datang kemar?" Dae Hyun merasa curiga dengan kedatangan mereka.


"Memangnya kenapa? Apakah tidak boleh ibu berkunjung ke hotel ini? Kami tadi hanya kebetulan lewat dan tiba-tiba kami ingin mampir. Apa kau tidak mengizinkan kami masuk?" ujar Ny. Park karena Dae Hyun justru menutup pintu dari luar.


"Tidak, hanya tidak biasanya saja berkunjung kemari." Sebisa mungkin Dae Hyun bersikap santai dan tidak gugup. Jangan sampai ibunya merasa curiga.


"Dimana Soo Yin? Apa dia sedang sibuk? Hari ini ibu ingin mengajaknya berbelanja," ujar Ny. Park.


Dae Hyun menggaruk kepalanya bagian belakang dengan jantung yang berdebar. Ragu mengatakan apa yang sedang dilakukan Soo Yin saat ini.

"Dia ada di dalam, Bu. Sedang membantuku memeriksa laporan."


"Kalau begitu biarkan ibu masuk dan bertemu dengannya. Semalam dia sangat terburu-buru sehingga ibu belum sempat berbicara dengannya." Ny. Park melangkahkan kakinya tidak peduli dengan Dae Hyun yang berada tepat di depan pintu untuk menghalanginya. Lalu membuka pintu, sedangkan Aeri terus mengikutinya di belakang.


"Soo Yin, apa kau sibuk?" Begitu masuk pandangan Ny. Park langsung tertuju kepada seorang gadis yang tengah duduk di sofa sambil memeriksa beberapa kertas di tangannya.


Soo Yin lantas berdiri dan membungkukkan tubuhnya sedikit.

"Aku hanya membantu Tuan Dae Hyun memeriksa semua berkasnya agar tidak terlewatkan," ujar Soo Yin sambil tersenyum tipis.


"Kau tampak sangat sibuk sekali," timpal Aeri. Dengan santai memandang ke arah Soo Yin. Tak dapat dipungkiri setiap melihat Soo Yin entah kenapa ingin marah. 


Dae Hyun mengikuti mereka masuk karena takut jika sampai mereka membuat masalah. Aeri kerap melakukan sesuatu yang menimbulkan masalah. Namun ia bisa bernafas dengan lega karena Soo Yin ternyata sudah keluar dari kamar.


Sepertinya Chang Yuan yang meletakkan tumpukan berkas di sana karena seingatnya, Dae Hyun tidak menaruh apapun di meja. Memang Chang Yuan sangat bisa diandalkan dalam segala hal.


Soo Yin menyembunyikan tangannya yang gemetar di balik punggungnya. Jantungnya berdetak kencang kali ini. Ini rasanya lebih mengerikan dari pada ketahuan Dae Hyun ketika semalam melihatnya memapah Kim Soo Hyun. Untunglah Soo Yin tadi cepat-cepat keluar meskipun kakinya masih bertelanjang. Ia tadi terburu-buru sehingga tidak sempat  mengenakan sepatu.


"Soo Yin, dimana sepatumu?" ujar Aeri sambil menyipitkan matanya ketika melihat kaki Soo Yin yang tanpa alas. Sebisa mungkin berusaha untuk tidak emosi sesuai permintaan Ny. Park kepadanya.

Orland memasukkan kaki nya satu persatu ke dalam air hangat itu.. duduk diam berhadapan dengan istrinya yang wajahnya telah berubah pucat..

"Ada apa dengan mu?? Kenapa wajahmu begitu tegang?? Aku belum juga ngapa-ngapain.." ucap orland santai

"Kan aku yang mau mandi.. kenapa jadinya berdua??" Tanya desty gelagapan

*Mood kucing minta di kasihani aktif...
"Aku juga gerah istri ku.. aku capek.. aku beres-beres rumah sendiri.. masak sendiri.. kamu kan tau di rumah lagi gak ada pembantu.. tidak boleh kah aku mandi bersama istriku??" ucapnya

Deg!! Kenapa dy tiba-tiba berbicara dengan nada seimut ini?? Kalau dy begini siapa yang tega menolaknya??
Dan.. beres-beres serta masak sendiri?? Apa benar?? Aku hampir tak bisa percaya pada perkataannya yg ini... Gumam desty dalam hati

"Apa punggungmu mau aku gosokkan??" Tanya desty 

"Apa kah kamu bersedia istriku?? Jika kamu bersedia aku tidak keberatan.."

"Baiklah.. kamu deketan sedikit kesini.."
Orland pun menurut.. tiba-tiba desty tersadar akan sesuatu.. "jamkkanman..(tunggu dulu) apa aku kini masuk keperangkapnya??" Ucapnya dalam hati menyadari tak tik licik suaminya

Orland pun menyeringai nakal.. karena istrinya telah tau akal bulus nya ia pun tidak membuang waktu lagi dengan cepat ia langsung menerkam istrinya di dalam sana sambil berkata "jangan salahkan aku karena tidak tahan.. kamu yang memanggilku mendekat istriku sayang..."

Sedangkan desty hanya bisa berteriak..

Satu jam telah berlalu.. wajah orland terlihat begitu berseri dan sangat bersemangat.. karena ia telah berhasil mengambil jatahnya sekali lagi.

Sedangkan desty, wajahnya telah cemberut dan terlihat kusam karena merasa sangat kelelahan.

"Apa kamu shio anjing??? Kenapa tingkah mu sebentar sangat menggemaskan, lalu tiba-tiba bisa berubah menjadi sangat liar???" Cemberut desty masih duduk di dalam jacuzzy

"Aku shio naga sayang.."

"Huh!!! Naga!! Pantas saja...."

Apa hubungannya dengan shio?? Ucap orland dalam hati sambil mengikat tali jubah mandinya

"Aku lelah.. aku mau tidur lagi.." ucap desty

Orland tersenyum, mendekatkan diri pada istrinya dan memijit-mijit bagian kepala desty perlahan-lahan.. kemudian bahunya dan juga lengannya. Beberapa menit berlalu, Terlihat desty telah terlelap karena pijitan, orland pun langsung mengangkat tubuh desty keluar dari dalam jacuzzy itu.. meraih jubah mandi dengan sebelah tangan kemudian melilitkan seadanya di tubuh mungil istrinya.

Dy benar-benar terlihat sangat kelelahan.. maafkan aku istriku.. aku tak bisa menahan diriku setiap berada di dekat mu.. ucap nya dalam hati sambil menciumi pucuk kepala istrinya dengan lembut..

Perlahan ia membaringkan desty di sofa panjang yang ada di dalam kamar, kemudian mengambil beberapa selimut dan bantal yang di letakkan disisi-sisi tubuh desty agar desty lebih nyaman lagi.. 

Sementara itu orland pun menuju kasur, berniat mengganti sepray di tempat tidurnya.. karena sepray yang sekarang terpasang telah di lumuri darah keperawanan desty. 

Dy tersenyum melihat darah itu.. melipat rapi sepray dan membiarkan noda merah itu terlihat. Ia berencana menyimpannya.. tak ingin mencucinya.. 

Beberapa menit berlalu.. orland telah selesai mengganti sepray dan kemudian ia pun meletakkan istrinya kembali ke atas kasur.. 

"Kamu kalo tidur semakin terlihat sangat menggemaskan sayang.. jangan tinggalkan aku lagi.. jangan katakan ingin pergi lagi.. aku sangat takut kehilangan kamu.. berjanjilah padaku.." ucap orland sambil melekatkan keningnya pada kening desty..

Desty yang memang kagetan, jadi ia mendengar semua yang orland ucapkan, namun tetap berpura-pura sedang tertidur.. 
perlahan Tangannya pun bergerak maju dan menyentuh pipi orland. "Aku berjanji" ucapnya sambil membuka matanya menatap sepasang mata abu-abu yang sudah berkaca-kaca.

"Apa kamu akan menangis??" Ejek desty. 

"Apa?? Tidak.. aku hanya kelilipan.." jawab orland

"Akh yang bener.. jangan boong... ayo ngaku.. jika kamu mau ngaku.. aku akan berjanji dengan sungguh-sungguh menjalani pernikahan kita ini.."

"Baiklah.. u r the winner.." ucapnya sambil memanyunkan bibirnya

"Hahahaha" tawa desty mengejek

Kkkrrrrriiiiiiuuuuuuuwwwwwkkk!! Bunyi perut desty telah bergendang menandakan lapar..

"Aku lapar..." ucapnya sambil memegangi perutnya.. 

"Makanannya sudah dingin.. kita makan di bawah saja yah.. sekarang kamu harus pakai baju dulu.. tetap disini jangan kemana-mana, biarkan aku yang mengambilkan pakaian untuk mu..

Orland pun memasuki kamar ganti mencari pakaian serba panjang. Ia pun langsung membawa pakaian yang telah di pilihnya kehadapan desty.

Desty terkejut tak percaya "pakaian apa ini?? Sekarang matahari sedang terik..  kenapa kamu memberiku celana jogger dengan hoodie leher setinggi ini?? Kamu ingin membiarkan ku mati kepanasan??" Tanya desty kebingungan

"Ini... itu... " mulai tergagap mencari alasan 
"pakaian yang lain sudah di pindah ke apartment kita.. yang tersisa hanya ini saja.. sementara tak apa.. pakai saja dulu ini yah.. nanti kita pergi belanja baju baru oke??" Pujuk orland

Bagaimana aku bisa memberikan mu pakaian biasa?? Aku tak mau orang-orang melihat tanda-tanda yang ku tinggalkan di sekujur tubuhmu.. aku tak ingin mereka mengetahui betapa aku tergila-gila akan tubuh mu itu.. baru mengingat nya saja aku sudah kepingin lagi.. hadeeehhhh ada apa dengan ku?? Mengapa aku begitu terobsesi pada tubuh mu?? Tidak.. tidak.. aku harus tahan.." orland bergumam sambil bergeleng-geleng sendiri dalam hatinya.

"Kenapa kamu geleng-geleng sendiri? Tidak mau pakai baju kah??" Tanya desty heran sambil mengenakan hodie dan celana jogger nya.. 

"Ah aku mau tarok makanan ini dulu di lift.." ucap orland singkat dan langsung keluar kamar sambil mendorong meja berisi masakannya tadi menuju ke arah lift

Setelah ia kembali, ia melihat desty telah selesai mengenakan pakaiannya dan hendak menuju meja rias.

Orland pun mengikutinya membantunya mengeringkan rambutnya..

"Kenapa kamu begitu perhatian??"

"Perhatian pada istri sendiri bukankah itu bagus??"

Desty mengangguk pelan.. 

"Orland.." ucap desty pelan

"Hem??" Jawab orland yang sedang mengikat rambut desty seperti kuncir kuda

"Apakah kamu akan selalu begini memperlakukan semua wanita mu??" Tanya desty menatapnya melalui pantulan cermin.

"Ntahlah.. aku tidak tau.. aku belum pernah memiliki wanita sesungguhnya sebelumnya.. hanya kamu yang pertama.."

"Kamu... tidak berbohong kan??"

Orland tak menjawab, ia hanya memiringkan kepalanya menatap desty melalui cermin dan tersenyum kecil, ia pun beranjak pergi ke kamar ganti untuk mengganti pakaian..

Lalu... siapa itu wanita yang para pelayan katakan di hari pernikahan kami itu??? Aku masih ingat jelas mereka mengatakan jika suamiku ke NY itu karena ingin bertemu dengannya.. hubungan mereka juga terdengar jelas di katakan telah berjalan bertahun-tahun.. apa dy berbohong dan sengaja menghindari pertanyaan ini???" Gumam desty dalam hati..

"Ayo.." ucap orland mengajak desty turun setelah ia selesai berpakaian..

It's been a week since i fired her. The weirdest thing is that i can't stop thinking about her i just don't know why the way being so rebelious against me seriously makes me curious.

It feels like she's not afraid of me anymore and sometimes i feels like she never afraid of me to begi with and all this time she just pretending to be a perfect little innnocent girl. 

"Mr Park your new partnership for the new building project is here" said my new secretary.

"Oh ok let him in".

"Err...that person is not a 'him' sir but that person is a 'she' sir".

"Wait what i tought Mr Oh is coming over right?".

"Yes he suppose to come but he send his daughter here instead".

"K whatever just send her in".

I contiunue to go through my files when i heard a familiar voice echo in ny office.

"Well hello Mr Park". She speak a smirk. That's her that's Oh Eumjung.

"Hey dad can you pass me the big project with PC Company to me?"

I saw his surprised face when i said that. I hate to admit it but this time i need his help. Look at the bright sight, when i got fired i also got a chance for me to show him that i am powerful too but the worse thing about this plan is that i need to coperate with my father which i hate. 

That's it. But knowing him ny whole life i know that he will be the happiest man on earth when i told him that i want to take over his company. That's what he want after all and i don't blame him for that because im his only daughter but when he try to married me off that's the thing that piss me off.

I don't blame him on mom's dead but i do hate him for his action. My father always been a good father my whole life until he started to become a workaholic and ignored me and my mom. 

He never attend to any of my occasion started then until my mom's dead. If he just leave his work and be with us that time mom will die in peace seeing the face of her lover for the last time before she died. But instead, she died while waiting for his beloved husband to come and give her a last kiss.

"Of course dear, but may i ask why did you want it?".

Erghh here we go again...

"I've been thinking a lot and i have decided that i want to help around here and plus i have quit my job at that company".

"Well this is not some sort of revenge to your boss right because apparently this project belongs to the same company as the company that you worked at".

"Was dad, i worked there before this and for your question , as your lovely sweet daughter do you really think that i will do something like that huh dad?". Well i know i am lying but who cares.

"Okay then dear so you have an appointment with Mr Park from PC Compaby tomorrow before lunch".

"Okay then thanks dad".

What is she doing here? Wow i need to admit it that im speechless.

"Why are you here?".

"What,can't you tell? Im the daughter of the EE Company".

"So you are telling me that you have been lying to me this whole time Miss ex-secretary?"

"I never lie to you because you never ask who i am so i assume that you don't want to know about that."

"K whatever let's just get down to our business".

After a few minutes of pacing around the apartment, I finally calmed down. Thinking logically it was as the tug said if they wanted me dead they could have done so. The only thing that kept me alive was the attitude I made up in the presentation with their boss.
It seems that the part of me playing as a god is helping me out a little bit.

It seems that I gained 1 point of CHR a while ago and didn't even noticed it. Maybe when I was talking to the tug after the successful negotiation. I was so agitated that I didn't even saw the blue screen while I was running.

I have a couple of goals now, overall I can grow a couple of stats. It would be a couple of months of efforts it seems to make them reach the maximum capacity to grow.

After that, I need to complete the mission of using <Lachesis Eyes> to gain more information about my future targets.

The other mission was the gold coins one, one gold coin is equal to 100 years it seems. So I needed 800 excess of lifespan just to reach LVL2. Not even having in an account the 210 lifespan years I need to max out my stats. So it was 1k years of lifespan. Shit, that would take a while.

Also, I need to think a way to launder money to make them legit so I can use it over here without persecution. I was thinking about opening nightclubs, but most of them are from the mafia. I could also buy cheap bulk trinkets from a 3rd country and open an antique store and sell to the store for 1000% profit.

But I think I would do what most people do, make "abstract art" and sell them for a ridiculous amount of money to have my foreign account buy them.

I decided to began slowly my laundry money business. 500k each artwork or something like that. While I was doing that I hired the best personal trainer available and began my training. On the mornings I would train with him solely focusing on the STR aspect, after that I would go to a private reserved Olympic pool while being coached by the best Olympic trainer available to train my STA. If I hit hard and keep hitting eventually I could win, I didn't have a plan to fight anytime soon, but better be safe than sorry.

On the nights I would go to my apartment and read books about foreign languages, It was the perfect combination for learning a new thing, training my stat and then I can finally say I know a lot of languages!

I called my family and send them money saying that I took a good job and I was doing well. Send a little pocket money to my little brother so he can spend on stuff he likes but that couldn't buy before. Like new first brand tennis shoes, or a new phone that was not used, etc. He was very happy but I remember him that this was a gift because I saw how much effort he was making at the school. If he stopped doing that what he's supposed to do the gift will stop too.

He was very pleased to know that his efforts were not unnoticed by his big brother and even praised him a little. Most of the time his brother had a face full of worry all the time while he was looking at him. He was happy to know that his brother was doing better.

I didn't forget about Emily, tomorrow was the date. So I had to be ready for that. On the way to my date, I was constantly using <Lachesis Eyes> to the people I was passing by, it became a habit for me. To slowly leveling up to LVL 3.

I arrived at our dinner date, it was a good review restaurant but not so expensive. It was a good moderate restaurant. Their specialty was pasta so it was difficult for them to screw that up. While I was thinking that Emily arrived, she was wearing a cute dress with a bag that matched her outfit and platform shoes that were in fashion this month it seems. 

I approach and said "I hope you don't usually get dresses as good today every time you go to work! You would have a lot of men making a line just to get your phone number!"

She surprised asked "Oh? You are saying that I dress badly when I go to work? They are guys asking for my number every day, so I don't think so!" 

I began to panic and said "Nono! You dress really well better than your coworkers, I mean I don't judge a book for a cover and ... " while I was quickly panicked and babbling Emily hid her mouth with her hand and laughed "Haha you are very easy to tease, come here you rascal and let's enjoy a good dinner!"

After saying that she locked her arms with me and we went to the restaurant together. 
It was a really nice dinner, I got to know her more. She was Emily Derlum, she was in NY studying for being an E.R medic. She decided to follow that career when one of those doctors saved her mother life. She was from a little town very far away.  She was 24 this year, her birthday was on the 15th of December. And her favorite color was violet.

I accompanied her home with a taxi while thinking about the need to buy a new car now that I have money to spare, and said bye to her on the front of her home.

I continued with my routine for increasing those 3 skills and after a month of working out, I finally incremented 1 of each skill. It seems is a lot more work if you are not in stressful situations.

I remade this novel keeping the realistic part and cutting the fictional elf/orc/monsters stuff since for me it seemed unnecessary.

REFLECTION of WARD COURIER
July, 2008
SOUTH WALES, NY

The summer was in full swing. Things with Lys Mall were not. She was out of town more than she was in, and I had learned not to expect explanations. As I tracked the last four months of our acquaintance, we'd had a handful of evenings and events together, but nothing that symbolized that a relationship or even sex was coming. We hadn't had any real fights, but despite my earlier resolution, I had made no overt attempt to get her into intimate circumstances. If she'd shown me any warmth I would have been all over her, but as it was, I felt like a stranger each time we reconnected.
She had her moods, too. On a couple of our evenings she wasn't trying to hide the fact that there was something on her mind that was way more captivating than I am. I was starting to think that there was a guy out there somewhere giving her the same business I was getting. Doubtless he was a high roller in some field, probably one so impressive to her that he could get her in line. I guess if you're in my position in all that, what you derive is that someone isn't interested in you. The times you are out with them, you're a substitute for something else, maybe for someone they're really interested in, maybe for nothing more than solitude or boredom.
It wasn't as if I pined for Lys. I am busy with my own life. That doesn't mean that I didn't think about her. I think I looked at her as a graceful opportunity in my life that could have been special but that I was probably fated never to know. Life is full of those. Every one of us has to realize it. There would be someone else coming someday. Life is full of those candidates, too.
I thought about Lys often, though, wondering what she was up to. I even mentioned her in my journal, in my own way. I mentioned things we did and even my thoughts about her. As I review the old journals, I see that she was a frequent flier during that period.
As if there was something I didn't want to admit to myself even in my journal, I never referred to her by her name. I developed code-names for her, most of them playing on either the sound of her name or what she had said to me about it the first time I had met her. ("Lys no Z.") If I ever got famous and this journal was discovered, somebody would have a damn hard time making sense of things.
I reversed the syllables of her name and called her "Malaise," the French term for the state of world-weariness which she surely seemed to embody now and then. Catch a glimpse of her at midnight looking off into the air and see if you agree.
Sometimes I referred to her as its synonym, "Ennui," which was also apt. I also called her "Annuit" in sort of a pun on the motto on the Great Seal of our dollar bill. ("He/she favors...") The French would pronounce that the same way, and that word for Lys was ironic. I had seen music and nightlife and high-risk endeavors achieve the effect of entertaining her, but nothing I did seemed to inspire her.
I see also that I referred to her now and again as Maeve, the Irish fairy/warrior-queen of legend and poetry that had become my fancy-of-the-month based on a book I had recently read. Maeve was tall, imperious, and starkly beautiful, but my point was the fact that her name in Gaelic means, "the intoxicating one," which was ironic. As much as Lys thrilled me in all non-alcoholic senses, she was the one who was always sipping. And smoking.
I also called her "Liz Nosy," which was the most contradictory of them all. She was the least inquisitive person I have ever met.

NARRATIVE of WARD COURIER/CONFERENCE with RICK REYNARD
September, 2008
RUSKIN, NY

It was the early fall. It had been almost a year since my conference with the FBI man Ted Bennett, and I had been processing things about the Crystal Skulls on and off since. I still found it remarkable that anyone in a position of authority would reach out to me for insight in the way Bennett had. Those of us who specialize in the paranormal are used to being overlooked. We are used to our subjects being marginalized and stereotyped as no more than curiosities.
I had agreed in that meeting with Bennett to keep my feelers out in my own circles for anything about the Crystal Skulls that might interest him. I had been doing that and heard nothing that seemed worth bothering him about. Whatever it was coming across his desk that had him concerned - which I presumed was a simple criminal case - it was not making its way into the New Age grapevine. I wasn't getting any new nudging from any source, so I went on with things in my own way.
Bennett had said to keep the details of his interest under the cuff. He had not said not to talk to anyone about the subject. He had actually solicited insight, and in one of my bouts of renewed curiosity I set about getting it, and in an avenue that would have surprised him.
In paranormal subjects, the insights of the white world are readily available. Go to any bookstore or library and browse shelves or stacks. Surf the internet. Turn on the TV for the light version. The interpretations are all over the chart, but the access isn't the problem.
The problem is that we whites are largely cut off from the insights of the old-timers who lived on the land we may be talking about, even if the former occupants were our own ancestors. In Europe, two millennia of the tag-team of the Roman Empire plus Christianity did a lot to stamp out the indigenous paganism of the Celtic and Germanic speakers. Those who preceded them left nothing but artifacts and earthworks. Some spiritual and site-related traditions have seen the light of print, but usually in fragments. Others can be painstakingly rediscovered with a fair degree of general understanding, but it's back-ending through other disciplines like archaeology and anthropology. Still, those of us of European ancestry will never get at the fine points through the intellect alone. We will never know what the old-timers felt in spiritual senses. We are largely cut off from the ancestors.
In the Americas, there is another avenue of insight available about supernatural subjects and site-traditions: the Native Americans. They are the descendants of the people who lived on the land long before my ancestors got here, and the cord to their ancestral tradition has not been cut. The average person outside their diverse societies would be shocked by the breadth and development of what still exists. For me, this is the X-factor, and the most neglected avenue of insight in the pop paranormal.
Native American culture-preservers usually have some tradition about anything you are likely to find on their former turf, natural or supernatural. This material, though, is hardly to be found in libraries. You have to ask the Native Americans, and they have to be willing to talk to you.
I have my own confidant, the guy I go to for private illumination. It's my Seneca friend Rick Reynard.
Rick is a young - fortiesh - elder among his own people and anyone's go-to guy when it comes to the Native traditions of the upstate, the home turf of his ancestors. A healer, a mystic, a shaman, and a teacher, he has his finger on the pulse of the First Nations all over the Americas. His insights, you realize, and those of Native American communities are not in the libraries and books. Rick's perspectives represent the last step in solidifying my own.
Rick is a solidly-built, middle-sized man with very broad shoulders and an impish and ready smile. He wears his long black hair in a perpetual pony tail. I've never seen him outside of a pair of jeans except in the summer when it might be cargo hiking shorts. He seems more comfortable in the cold in lighter clothes than most people I know. He's fond of dark T-shirts with Native American icons and logos: the horizontal, two-squares-diamond-and-two-squares pattern they call Hiawatha's Belt; the fishbone-stem icon they call the White Pine; the pictograph-form they call the Earth-Turtle. Rick is of the Wolf Clan, and you see wolves on his T's and in the embroidery of his denim jackets. I think his dad might have been Bear Clan, and you see those on him now and then, too. The lineage always goes through the mother's side for the Iroquois, though, so he's Wolf.
The Six Iroquois Nations have nine animal clans, and they are always making in-jokes as if the clan members take on the traits of their totem animals. Once when Rick and I were at a party on the Tuscarora Reservation with a couple of Wolf Clan Mohawks, somebody knocked on the door and Rick yelled out, "Come on in if you're fat!"
They also identify strongly with the animal species. Once Rick was late for a talk because his ride-mate, an Onondaga of the Turtle Clan, spotted a big snapper along the road and insisted they stop and carry it to its apparent destination, a pond on the other side. Rick was driving on the night his Onondaga friend Leon Shenandoah died, and he almost hit a great blue heron standing like it was waiting for him in the middle of a rural road. He had always taken it as a sign. Leon was the chief, the Tadodaho, of the Six Nations. The symbol of his leadership, his "crown," if you will, had been the heron feather cap.
Rick was raised off the reservation in the nearby town of Holland. Apparently his aunt spoke out one too many times in council and got kicked out of her house. His dad got so mad at the chiefs that he decided to take his chances in the white world. The clan mothers who are ultimately most influential tried to get him back, but John Reynard was a man who made his mind up just once, not always to the comfort of his family. I know he and Rick didn't see eye to eye on everything. It might have been his dad's flight from the Native ways that drove Rick back to them. As if it was a sign of his dad's clash with the Tonawanda Seneca, Rick's mentors were a couple of legendary Tuscaroras, both medicine men, the late Wallace "Mad Bear" Anderson and the recently-late Ted Williams.
If it's anything concerning the traditions of his ancestors, Rick is a library on two feet. His word goes a long way on the Reservations, too. He's opened doors for me that don't open easily for white guys with laptops.

     Jeanette was pushed through a series of doors, all metal and heavy like the ones she was previously pushed through, until they came to a pitch black room. She was temporarily blinded, until a light was flicked on, and she waited for her eyes to adjust. A glass cage was in the middle of a large room, it was clear why they called this the Island. The cage was suspended above the rest of the room, and the only lights were above it. The man called Waterbird picked her up, and against all of her struggles he walked up a ladder onto what resembled a cat walk above a stage, and roughly threw her in the glass cage. Jeanette let out a loud yelp, and when she landed on the bottom of the cage, she was cut. She yelped again, inspecting her hands, but there was no blood, nothing there, except pain. She moved into a sitting position, but every time she touched the glass, even through her clothes she felt a million tiny cuts. She couldn't help the tears rolling down her face now, and she tried to stand up, her hands and feet feeling the microscopic cuts. It felt like when one's foot fell asleep magnified by twelve thousand. She wasn't sure what this was, and confusion made her brush a loose strand of hair behind her ear. But as her hand reached her face, she felt the cuts and the pain transfer to her cheek. Instinctively, her other hand automatically came up to shield it, and instant pain radiated through her cheek. She started screaming. Obviously, all the torture rooms were completely soundproof as to not interrupt the people doing their jobs, with foam in the walls and dirt in between the walls. However, the metal lining on the inside of the room made her screams echo, seeming so much louder than they actually were, and meeting a scream with a scream. 
     The Island is one of my favorite torture rooms. Diamond dust coated the cage and was embedded in the skin, causing microscopic, sharp cuts. It was the easiest torture, too, for the person doing the torturing was the person being tortured. I was on the review committee for when it was introduced, and it was an automatic hit with everyone. It placed second that year, only to the major improvements to the head clamp. It was a shame I wouldn't be able to watch Jeanette's face as she realized she wouldn't be able to make one movement without immense pain.
