With the sudden influx of e-nutrients after evolution, all of the solutions that he discovered were now ready.


Even thought he already decided that he was going to use his 'evopoint' to create the <<Songstress Mockingbird>> he couldn't help but wonder what is the future evolution of each solution that he has right now.


He couldn't help but imagine what if he choose to create the chicken and it evolve to f*cking phoenix, or the goat and it evolve to a mythical satyr, or the cow and evolve to gigantic minotaur, or the dog evolving to hell's cerberus!  And the horse and evolve to unicorn, or maybe, a centaur! How good it would be to become a centaur.


Countless imagination was running through his mind when the word evolution is related to it. And after a few breaths worth of time, he finally uses the solution of <<Songstress Mockingbird>>.

When Talas Talim saw the skill of the bird, he didn't even know if he would be happy or sad. But at the least he knew that he can use this bird transformation to communicate with other beings, and that alone is worth using the 'evopoints' for.


"Polymorph! Songstress Mockingbird!" He uses the new skill that the system unlocked that solely use for transforming into any beast in his beast-slots.


After the skill was used, a black liquid with a green colored outer glow starts coming out from his body, it was the same liquid that appeared when he evolved. The black liquid started to wrap around his whole body, and after he got wrapped, the black liquid started to move as if it was forming into something. When the black liquid turn to a shape of a bird it stopped moving and become the <<Songstress Mockingbird>>. All of these happened within a single breath worth of time.


The <<Songstress Mockingbird>> still looks like the same one that he bit, but the only noticeable difference was the eyes of the bird were colored green.


When he finished transforming into a bird, thousand of thought suddenly influx through his mind. It was the information of the bird, he feels like he was suddenly familiar with every part of his body and how to use it. And just as he expected, he can move his body fluidly as if he was already used to being a bird.


He got too excited with his transformation that he instantly soars through the sky above the warehouse all of the livestock that saw him was frightened when they saw how fast the bird was. Even some near people near the livestock were alerted.


But after a few breaths, he suddenly slap his face thinking how stupid he was that he let himself got too excited that he excitedly flew as a beast bird within a human base camp!


And speaking of the devil… an arrow was flying towards him! Fortunately it missed him by a hair.


That shocked him through his core because he knew if that arrow hit him, god knows what will happen to him, but at least he knew it will hurts a lot!
 

He started to focus and his concentration was hitting through the roof, he was really scared at the moment that it gives him the adrenaline to move fast. He looked at the direction where the arrow came from, and he saw that it was an archer inside the watchtower faraway in the direction of the location of livestock. And he was scared witlessly when he saw that the archer was already aiming at him with a wooden bow and arrow. He instantly change his direction and was flying to the north, trying to escape outside of the base camp, and find a secure place to transform again into a mosquito before coming back.


He dodged the second arrow like the first one but with accuracy this time. He knew that with his flying speed and the reloading time of the archer, he can escape through the barricaded in the north if he dodges three more arrows.  The third arrow left the bow and accurately aimed his right wing, but before it hit him he shifted his body diagonally and the arrow passed him and missed again. Because of the distance was getting farther and farther, the fourth arrow was so easy to dodge, and it made him sigh of relief because now he was confident that he can escape without a scratch. But still, he was still cautious and wary even though it's the last arrow he still needs to fully commit when he dodges it. But the fifth arrow never came and it confuses him, but he didn't thought about it that much, the important thing for him right now is that he already escaped and he was already outside of the base camp.


"Why did you stop me from shooting?" within the watchtower the archer asked gazing under the tower, he was asking one of the soldier that hurriedly stop him from shooting.


"Sir Ro-.. Sir Robin th-that bird was a 'Songstress Mockingbird!'" The panting soldier under the tower replied while looking to the archer above.


"I know it was a Songstress Mockingbird and I know that it was a beast! So I need to shoot it down!" Robin was clearly annoyed by the sudden interference of the soldier below. He was already embarrassed that he missed four times as an archer because of a bird, and he was already prepared to use his clan skill to hit and kill the bird. But before he got to use it, he was stopped for some unknown reason. He almost jumped down and slaps the soldier if he didn't have self control, but no matter what he was still annoyed.


"No no no no, let me finish first what I was going to say, Sir Robin" The soldier was frightened by the looks of Robin, but the soldier knew that it was a misunderstanding.  So after he catches his breath he told him what he was going to say.


 "Sir Robin, that songstress mockingbird is maybe Lady Edina's pet! As it was came from inside the camp, maybe it was Lady Edina's bird pet that just got here yesterday, maybe it escaped!" The soldier told Robin all of his assumptions.


The eyes of Robin suddenly brightens after hearing what the soldier said, all the negative feelings the he felt earlier were gone like smokes, and the look of his face suddenly takes a turn and now it was full of smiles and eyes full of hopes like it suddenly saw an opportunity of a lifetime.


"Thud!"


Robin jumped from the six meter watchtower to the near haystacks around the area, and hastily runs toward the direction of where Talas Talim escaped, which is the north. He moves without hesitation at all like he didn't want this opportunity presented by fate to fail, he didn't even bother looking at the soldier he was talking to. But the soldier didn't even have a hint of annoyance in his face, instead he was happy that he got to do a favor for his Sir Robin, and he knew that his Sir Robin has a crush towards Lady Edina. The soldier couldn't help imagine what would be his rewards like when his Sir Robin returns successfully. He hope and he prays that his Sir Robin becomes successful as he stares at the fading back of the fast departing figure.


Talas Talim who escaped is currently heading to the woods to find some secure place to transform and become a small and hard to notice mosquito again.


"F*ck that was close! Now I started to miss being small and unnoticeable! At least it was safer than being a bird!" He couldn't help but speak to himself how safer it was when he was a mosquito.


"F*ck that archer! Sooner or later I will teach you a lesson!" he was clearly angered about what happened earlier that he couldn't help but cursed the archer.

Talas Talim was just an ordinary college student on modern earth, and didn’t’ think much of his life until one day he accidentally died because he was doing his college thesis. "Hang our flag!" 
Following Fang Yuan's command, a black pirate flag with a white skull was gradually hoisted on Mockingbird.
There was immediately an uproar on the ship across from them. Shortly after, that ship's crew was roaring in rage. 
After momentary astonishment, the Ferocious Tiger Pirates immediately prepared for battle when they saw their former old friend turn hostile. 
"Captain?" Bill moved slightly nearer to Fang Yuan. "Why not send a friendly signal so that we can get closer before attacking them by surprise? They don't know that our ship has just undergone a drastic change!"
"As far as pirates are concerned, the little friendship from before is inferior to even the feathers of a seagull. Not to mention, they just raked in a great fortune… If we had approached, they'd certainly attack!" Fang Yuan shook his head, and his expression instantly became arrogant. "Moreover… with my blessings, if you still aren't able to easily defeat them and obtain victory, then what do I need you guys for?" 
His icy cold words immediately caused Bill to shiver. He knew that everything this captain said was the truth! 
Kaboom!
At this point, the other pirate ship opened fire. 
Multiple cannonballs landed in the sea around Mockingbird, causing huge splashes of seawater. 
"Go closer!" Fang Yuan bellowed and raised the officer's sword in his hand. "Where are our gunners? Counterattack! Counterattack!" 
Unfortunately, he had killed too many of the former crew members. Even if they had barely managed to gather sufficient manpower, their cannon fire was sparse, and the accuracy was so low, it made people want to cry. 
Bang!
Right at this moment, a cannonball accurately hit Mockingbird's deck, blasting a huge hole surrounded by flesh and blood. 
"Get lost!"
Fang Yuan stepped forward, kicked the helmsman away, and steered the ship personally. 
He was clear that if the two ships continued bombarding each other with cannons, his Mockingbird would certainly end up shattering into pieces.
Their only hope was to fight a boarding battle with them.
Under his control, Mockingbird was as agile as a fish, navigating through the net of cannon fire and getting progressively closer. 
"Everyone… attack!" Fang Yuan shouted.
During this time, numerous cannonballs had violently landed on Mockingbird, causing it to become full of holes. 
But at this moment, Mockingbird had already completed its mission.

Amid the astonished cries from across, the ship's ram firmly slammed into the center of the opposing ship, almost causing it to break into two. 
"Hehe!"
Butcher laughed wildly and jumped from the ship's bow onto the other pirate ship. With a sweep of his huge cutlass, the few pirates that came to encircle him were overwhelmed with shock and severed at the waist. 
"Ahh…" 
"Help!"
Miserable shrieks were heard one after another. 
This situation was similar to the extremely inhumane waist chop from ancient times. Some of the pirates were still able to survive for a short while even after their bodies had been severed in half. They were crawling on the floor, trying hard to join their bodies back together. 
Even for pirates who had killed countless times, their limbs turned icy cold and their skin crawled after seeing such a cruel scene. 
"Kill!"
Whereas for the pirates on Mockingbird, it boosted their morale after seeing this. They followed behind Butcher and went on a killing spree. 
Clang! Clang!
After a few loud clashes, the pirates of the Ferocious Tiger Pirates were stunned to see that the weapons in their hands were broken. Afterward, they were easily killed during this momentarily astonishment. 
"Haha… This is the kind of battle that I wanted!"
Butcher sliced one of the pirate leaders into two and laughed heartily. 
Although their numbers were less than the other party, they were dominating in all aspects of strength due to the captain's blessings. 
By now, the battle had already begun to become one-sided. 
"Roar! Roar!"
Suddenly, a tiger's roar was heard. 
A dark shadow lunged out like a ferocious tiger and grabbed a pirate. Tearing with its hands, the pirate was ripped in half and overflowing with fresh blood. 
"Fred must have gone mad to dare attack me. However, looking at you guys… could he have obtained some secret treasure, or perhaps something drastic happened on Mockingbird?" 
The black shadow stopped, and the figure of a pirate ship captain appeared. 
He was a burly man with bronze skin, clad in a black-spotted animal skin robe. He had tied his hair into over a dozen braids that were all different in appearance. 
"Ferocious Tiger Pirates's captain—Tiger?!" 
However, when Butcher saw him, his expression was fearful and grave.
"It seems that… something really happened on Mockingbird… But it doesn't matter. Since you've chosen to declare war on me, then be prepared to pay the price!" 
Tiger assumed a position resembling a ferocious tiger pouncing on its prey.
The weapons he used were very bizarre. They were ten sharp metal finger cots that made his hands seem as though they had transformed into the sharp claws of a ferocious beast. 
Ferocious Tiger—Tiger!
He was the strongest man on the Ferocious Tiger Pirates, and he had even ripped apart a naval battalion. It was also rumored that he was a mysterious Extraordinary.
"I have long wanted to fight against you!" Butcher had a zealous look on his face. "Apart from Captain, no one can be stronger than me!" 
Poof!
He swung his huge cutlass, and it was as if a tornado had formed on the ground. 
Sizzle!
A black shadow flashed by in midair and discharged a flurry of sparks. 
Two silhouettes fought at lightning speed, and then they stood firmly in place. 
"Your skills aren't bad, but unfortunately you're too slow!" 
Tiger licked the traces of blood on his metal claws. 
"Damn it!"
Butcher looked at the wounds on his own body, and his face turned gloomy. 
Such a small injury was certainly not capable of causing him to lose his fighting strength, but the difference between them was obvious. If he continued fighting, it would definitely not end well for him. 
"Move aside…"
At this moment, a cold voice was heard. 
Butcher's body tensed up, and he subconsciously stepped aside. 
"You're… the new pirate ship captain? It seems that Fred, that useless piece of trash, has already been fed to the sharks…" 
Tiger's expression was unprecedentedly grave while gazing at Fang Yuan. 
His beast-like instincts told him that the reason why these pirates had undergone such a drastic transformation was entirely due to this man in front of him. 
Dangerous! Very dangerous! 
A shiver immediately spread across his entire body. 
"Captain of the Ferocious Tiger Pirates, right? I'll give you a chance. Fall on your knees and pledge allegiance to me! I will then spare you…" Fang Yuan said in a deep voice. 
"Spare me… kid!" 
Tiger's expression became sinister in an instant. He exposed his fangs and suddenly pounced, as though he had really transformed into a huge tiger. 
"Rise!"
Fang Yuan bent his fingers.

Pieces of the deck's wooden planks floated into the air, blocking the black shadow's path. 
"Roar! Roar!"
Tiger repeatedly brandished his sharp claws, ripping apart the wooden planks and dashing toward Fang Yuan. 
Poof!
Soon after, he plunged right into a gigantic ball of water. 
A three-meter-wide ball of water was floating in front of Fang Yuan. Inside it, the captain was constantly struggling, seeming like he was drowning. 
Witnessing this, the Ferocious Tiger Pirates instantly lost their will to fight. Some of them even directly raised both hands in surrender. 
"Sorcerer!" 
"Boss is definitely a sorcerer!" 
Seeing this, the pirates of Mockingbird, especially Bill, had once again reaffirmed the guess in their hearts.
"Useless chap. I thought… you could've brought me more delight!" 
It could be seen from Fang Yuan's expression that he had lost interest. He snapped his fingers.
The ball of water slowly floated up. Trapped within, Tiger was like a small bug inside a piece of amber. 
"Fire!" Fang Yuan once again said another word. In an instant, there was a ball of flames burning inside the water, and Tiger was turned into ashes.

The ball of water exploded, raining down as droplets. 
"Surrender if you don't want to become like him!" 
Fang Yuan swept his eyes over everyone. 
The Ferocious Tiger Pirates were already a lost cause, and its pirates immediately chose to surrender. 
Numerous pirates threw down their weapons and raised their hands.
"Bill, all the captives are now under your watch. Butcher, head over to take control of the merchant ship!" Fang Yuan swiftly issued his commands. 
At the same time, a wrought iron ring landed in his hand.
This was the only thing the former Ferocious Tiger Pirates' captain had left behind after the ball of water was burned. 
The reason it had caught Fang Yuan's eye was naturally due to the mysterious powers encircling it.

Fang Yuan played around with the ring in his hand.

"I promise will take care of you, my little sister, I'll be with you forever, now go to sleep my dearest butterfly don't cry anymore," the 8 years old Jared said to his 2 years old sister. Their mother had passed away a week earlier due to illness and Vanylla, who begun to learn how to speak a few words tend to cry at night. Usually, their mom would her to bed, and baby Vanylla seemed to feel that her mother was not around anymore. With tears still hanging in her beautiful eyelids, Vanylla who was still sitting in her crib heard her brother humming "hush little baby" Vanylla's favorite song. Jared continued to smile as he stroked his younger sister's cheek, then he sang again while stroking the little Vanylla who was getting sleepy.

"I promise I will give you everything in this world, I'll protect you until I die, please sleep my beautiful mockingbird, I will always be here for you forever"

"Don't cry anymore, my mockingbird, just sleep hhhmmm" Jared murmured while humming and stroking his sister's head. Baby Vanylla began to fall asleep shortly afterward.

ST. ELIZABETH HOSPITAL

Jared was still stroking his younger sister's head who had regained consciousness after the operation but then she collapsed again. She was still in intensive care and now she was sleeping in a sideways position with a hanging IV drip. She recently had surgery of her miscarried baby. With swollen eyes, Jared sang quietly the mockingbird song that he always hummed to his sister.

"Hush, a little baby, don't say a word. Brother's gonna buy you a mockingbird, And if that mockingbird won't sing, Brother's gonna buy you a diamond ring ... "before Jared finished singing it, Vanylla's eyes opened slowly, she immediately saw her brother. Jared stopped singing and smiled.

"Don't stop, keep singing it for me Jared," Vanylla pleaded in a weak voice. Jared brought his face closer. Folding one hand then leaning his head as tilted as Vanylla while continuing to stare at her, he sang softly continuing his hum. Vanylla's tears continued to fall as if only her brother could understand. Jared sang softly and wiped Vanylla's tears with his fingertips.

"Don't cry my mockingbird, I will always be with you" Jared murmured in a soft voice. Vanylla could not stop crying and sobbing.

"I should have listened to you, I'm sorry, Jared" Jared seemed to know something had happened before the accident, he only didn't know what it was. Jared kissed Vanylla's forehead softly then lied down again.

"Now it's only you and me against the world, hhmm," Jared said quietly and Vanylla nodded. That promise was chanted by Jared when they were little, especially after their mother was gone.

5th FLOOR, ST. ELIZABETH HOSPITAL

Meanwhile, with a broken heart Mars exited the elevator with Caleb. He had put his gun back in, but he had been blocked by dozens of people in suits, all of them were Jared Wright's men. Mars tried to force to get in but they kept blocking him. He became angry then beat some men until Abraham Wright came

"What happened here," Abraham asked in a high tone

"Where is Vanylla?" Mars immediately asked without courtesy

"You are not allowed here, you'd better leave," Mars jaw hardened, that was not the answer he wanted. Caleb began to lose control of Mars.

"Just tell me where is my fiance?" Mars said in a half-shouted tone. Abraham grinned sarcastically shaking his head in disbelief at what he heard

"Your fiance? She is not your fiance anymore, get away from here Mars King and don't make a fuss" Abraham was about to turn around but Mars shouted at him

"I know she is inside, give her to me," Mars shouted, obstructed by several men suit. Abraham turned and looked at Mars with an angry face

"She is not yours, and I will never let my daughter to be touched by you again"

"No, she is my fiance, she is mine, give me back my angel" Mars continued to fight and shout behind Abraham. Abraham did not want to hear anymore so he left and ordered his men to prevent Mars from approaching Vanylla's room. Caleb tried to calm him down although it was a useless effort. Mars's eyes had turned black now, he was so angry. He beated everyone who blocked him ragingly. Until he finally pulled out his gun, he threatened and pointed it to all the bodyguards. And it worked a while, they released their grips on him. The entire hospital and employees were afraid when they faced Mars, Caleb could only prevent him from doing worse as much as possible. Mars immediately ran inside to find where Vanylla was.

"Mars, please calm down," Caleb shouted at him, trying to catch him up. Along the 5th floor hallway of the hospital, he looked for Vanylla shouting out her name. Some patients had come out to see what the commotion had happened

"Angel ... angel, my bluebird, baby girl where are you angel!" As he walked he shouted as he continued to be blocked by Jared Wright's bodyguards, but he became even angrier and destroyed everything. The hospital hallway was in chaos due to Mars. Some equipment was scattered because of the fight.

"Angel... let me go, give me back my angel, aaanggeeellll" Mars continued to scream looking to all corners of each room. He did create a fray to every room he went in. Doctor Neville finally came out and helped to block Mars

"Mr. King, this is a hospital, you can't make a fray here," Dr. Neville said half screamed, Mars turned around and pointed his gun to the chief of medicine

"Tell me where she is?" Dr. Richard Neville shook his head

"The patient didn't want to have any visitor, please leave before I call the police"

"you lied ... tell me where my angel is, otherwise, I'll shoot you" Mars's face turned really red

"Do it, then I'll make sure you'll be rotting in jail Mr. King" Dr. Richard challenged Mars. Instead of calming the raging devil, these people were not helping by provoking him more. Caleb was forced to obstruct Mars by standing in front of his gun.

"please calm yourself down, I beg of you, we can talk about this, lower your gun, please" Caleb knew exactly, Mars was digging his own grave. Soon the press would arrive and they'd skinned him alive with these issues, and it was impossible to interfere with the number of personal recordings from phones that would escalate the problem more.

"Get away from me Caleb or I'll shoot you too" Caleb shook his head and then moved to Mars's side.

"I'm begging you Mars, calm down, we gonna find a way, we'll find her" Caleb half-whispered while holding Mars' arm, but he brushed it off and shot the floor where the doctor was standing. A few employees shouted because Mars fired inside the hospital. Okay, now it had become a legal action for Mars.

"I'm not playing around doctor, I will kill you if you don't tell me where my Vanylla is," Mars growled with an angry voice and noisy panting breath.

"Call the police now!" The doctor even shouted louder at his employees and some people did make the call. With an angry, upset and disappointed face, Mars turned back to search with his broken heart and despair.

"Angel ... angel ... aanggeeelllll" he kept shouting in the hallway of the hospital.

Meanwhile, Jared's bodyguard walked in and spoke in a low voice about the situation outside.

"Sir, Mars King has arrived and he is almost getting here." Jared, who turned to his right then faced Vanylla who was still lying down. Vanylla shook her head slowly

"I don't want to see him anymore Jared, take me away from him," Vanylla said softly. Jared nodded slowly with a weak smile.

"Clear out my way, we'll go through the side door," Jared ordered coldly at his bodyguard. The man nodded and pressed the talk button on his earpiece giving the order. Then Jared stood up taking out an earphone inside his jacket. Meanwhile, the sound of Mars's shouting out Vanylla's name was being heard from the end of the hall. When Vanylla heard it, she  cried right away, her heartbreaking to the sound of Mars's despair outside of the room. Then Jared put the earphone to Vanylla's ears, while smiling as he held his younger sister's cheeks.

"Don't listen to anything other than this song," Jared kissed Vanylla's forehead. Jared turned on the recording of himself singing mockingbirds to his younger sister when he was 8 years old. He recorded it so that Vanylla could sleep whenever he was away from her, especially when she had to go to England at the age of 10. Jared took a large blanket, sat Vanylla then wrapped her to cover the entire body. The IV was held by one of the guards and Jared was carrying his sister in the bridal style. Another bodyguard opened the side door of the room and Jared passed outside carrying Vanylla in the opposite direction of Mars's voice. With a cold face, he continued walking, carrying his sister without looking anywhere.

Mars could not find Vanylla anywhere even though he had searched for the entire floor. Until the police arrived and arrested him. He continued to fight so the police had to give him an electric shock so he could be handcuffed. With his face pressed against the floor, Mars was handcuffed like a criminal being pulled and then dragged forcefully by the several police officers out of the hospital. Caleb could only follow Mars and asked the police to block the journalists to take his pictures.

But nothing could stand in the way when Mars came out and was handcuffed, he was immediately chased by reporters who wanted to know what had happened. Some police officers could only block as much as they can. Caleb immediately called the lawyer and Geovanni King. Getting into the police car, Caleb approached Mars.

"I'll set you free okay, please just calm down Mars, I beg of you" Mars did not answer he was still angry, the color of his eyes had not changed yet except he was no longer raging and hitting. Mars looked once more at the hospital building. His heart hurt so much that it felt like he wanted to die. Mars was taken to the police station of LAPD with the police siren car. Some reporters chased after Caleb but got nothing. Caleb left them while getting in the car and went to follow the police car. The news began to stir and spread, Billionaire and CEO of King Enterprise Mars King raged in a hospital.

Geovanni King went straight to the LAPD when he heard his son was arrested for committing commotion and damaging hospital property. Caleb who had been there before with a lawyer could only wait. They tried to issue Mars on bail, but several procedures had to be passed by Mars because doctor Richard Neville filed his law charge on him. So Mars had to stay overnight in the cell of LAPD police station.

"What happened?" Geovanni asked Caleb, who was in a tired appearance. The dusk of the night came and Mars was now in prison.

"Vanylla had an accident and she miscarried" Geovanni took a deep breath and then massaged his forehead

"Mars went to the hospital but he was blocked by Mr. Wright and his bodyguards, they did not allow Mars to meet Vanylla, so he was raging and searched for Vanylla all over the hospital." Geovanni immediately frowned with a disappointed sad face.

"Did he shoot someone?" Geo asked

"Almost, he threatened with a gun and shot the floor where the doctor was standing." Geo immediately turned and looked from afar the aisle where his son was being jailed.

"Don't let this news spread through media Caleb, do anything to block it," Caleb nodded. He then made several calls to hold back the flow of news about Mars tomorrow. But even so, news about the Mars King who rampaged blindly in the hospital had already circulated widely on social media. Geovanni and Caleb then had the opportunity to see Mars in his cell. They were given a special deal because of the proximity of Geo and the LAPD police chief.

Mars looks very chaotic sitting up while folding up his legs leaning against the corner of the wall. He only stared blankly at the wall in front of him while occasionally closing his eyes.

"Mars, my son," called Geo, Mars turned to see his father who was free to enter the cell. Mars was alone there. He stood up and approached his father. They hugged to each other

"Calm down son, everything will be fine, daddy will always be with you Mars," Geo whispered softly. Sighing heavily, Caleb who stood at the prison door then turned and left. He wanted to give them privacy. Mars let go of his arms.

"Mars, I'm sorry, my deepest condolence son," Mars then sat up with him about to cry. He covered his face with both hands. Geo then crouched in front of Mars.

"I will look for Vanylla to you" Mars's face was lifted, he cried. Geo had never seen Mars cried except at Wright's mansion when he was determined to propose Vanylla to Abraham. Mars had never shed tears for anyone, including for his parents. But now a woman put him down, a man whose entire life was being called a devil shed tears for her. She had strong leverage on Mars. Geo was afraid that losing Vanylla would make him lose himself.

"Calm down, son, please" Mars shook his head. Geo was still kneeling in front of his son.

"I really want to see her dad, I really want to hug her" Mars continued to sob while clenching his hands. Geo nodded

"Be patient, you must be calm, we will always be here for you"

"My baby, I have lost my baby, I do not want to lose Vanylla too, dad, I could die" Mars's voice was getting lost, his sob was getting louder

"please don't talk like that, you will be fine, you two will surely meet again, believe me, daddy will bring her back for you" Geo then hugged his son's head and kissed his top head. For a moment, the bitter memories left by his old lover once glanced in Geo's mind. He did not want his only son to suffer the similar experience as him. After trying to calm Mars, Geo could not stay in prison for long.

"You're going out tomorrow, I promise" Mars nodded with an emotionless face and red eyes. Geo holds his son's cheek and smiled. He left the prison and Mars alone there. Leaving the cell where Mars must stay tonight, Geovanni stepped outside the LAPD office. Caleb had gone to Rose's apartment to tell her the situation. Driving his own car, Geovanni headed to the Wright family mansion. Once blocked outside, he was finally allowed to get into. Geo was escorted to the living room where Abraham was waiting for him

"It's good that you're here. I'll just get to the point, from now on there is no more engagement between your son Mars King and my daughter Vanylla Wright" Geo looked at Abe with a disbelief look. He shook his head slowly while still looking at Abe

"You can't just break off the engagement, only Vanylla and Mars can do it," Geo said

"I didn't, Vanyla decided to break off the engagement" Geo frowned

"no way, that's impossible, Vanylla won't break on him, they both love each other," Abe snorted sarcastically

"love? Do you think that your son loves my daughter, he approaches Vanylla to destroy my family and God does not let that devil continue to hurt my daughter"

"What do you mean Abe, Mars never hurt Vanylla" Abe shook his head in annoyance

"he was from the beginning, your son had indeed to hurt Vanylla, he forced her to bed so she could get pregnant and being close to my family, now he devastated her, but unfortunately his scheming plan was never be allowed by God, and believe me this time I will not let you or your cunning son approach my daughter any longer"

"Abe think about it, if Mars doesn't love Vanylla, he would definitely push her away, he would never make a fray at the hospital just to find his girlfriend, I beg you Abe, please give Mars a chance to explain himself to her"

"Now you are begging to me, you are pathetic" Geo's eyes began to redden, he already humiliated himself by coming to Abe's house. But he could not bear to see Mars's desperate cries for Vanylla. The girl had made Mars fall in too deep, now she turned into poison that killed him slowly.

"I did this for my son, please do that for your daughter too, or you will regret it" Abe approached Geo with an angry and upset face

"I am not you who left my family for personal pleasure, if you are looking for redemption, do not come to my house" Geo felt so hurt by the words. The old sins he had seemed to be revealed, they were cut and hurt him so bad.

"I know I'm not a good father like you Abe, but I will do anything for Mars at this time, let them meet just once, I'm begging you" Abe who had turned around then turned back to Geo

"Tell your son to forget Vanylla forever, there is no longer a bond between them, she had miscarried already, just think that God did not allow Mars King and Vanylla Wright to be together" Abe answered in a low voice. Geo shook his head slowly.

"I'm begging you Abe, please let them meet"

"No, it wasn't me but Vanylla who asked for this, if you don't, believe me, you can ask her yourself" Abe turned and Geo followed him to a room. Geo went up to the second floor and entered a room, Vanylla was seen sitting back and being hugged by her brother Jared. Jared was intending to put Vanylla to bed when Geovanni approached along with Abraham. Jared looked calm and did not move to see Geo standing slightly bent near the bed

"sweetheart, Vanylla how are you dear?" Vanylla did not answer she just stared blankly as she leaned her head against her brother's chest. Then Geo turned to look at Abe searching for answers

"she was like that since being discharged from the hospital," Abe answered sadly. Jared continued to stroke Vanylla's back and arms.

"sweetpea, Mars really wants to meet you, he wants to see you," Geo said in a soft voice still bowing. He wanted to touch Vanylla but he didn't think that was a good idea. Hearing Mars's name only made Vanylla buried her head in her brother's chest. After some minutes, Geo straightened his body, he didn't get any respond from Vanylla. Jared just looked at Geo expressionlessly. But when Geovanni half turned around his body, Vanylla spoke

"I don't want to meet him, I don't want to see Mars King anymore," Vanylla said softly in a barely audible voice. Geovanni closed his eyes then turned to Vanylla with a sad face and was about to cry. Vanylla was only seen continuing to embrace her brother and did not glance to Geovanni at all. Then Abraham approached Geovanni

"Now please step out of my house, we have no more business here" Geo only swallowed his disappointment bitterly. Along with disappointment expression, he stepped out of the room leaving the Wright mansion. He had to find a way to tell Mars if Vanylla had decided to leave him. Geovanni was still in the car and thought, why was this happening again. He could not see Mars going through the same life as his. He was being trapped with a woman, could not move on and left nothing but the useless sacrifice at the end.

When the Devil falls on his knees to an Angel, would heaven give him a beautiful destiny or a horrible hell?

'Iferis?' I ask as I step out of the shower. I eye a damp strand of hair, the red is leaking out, I should redye it soon.

'Yes?' She replies and I want to ask her where she went and what happened and why she didn't reply. But I don't.

She's lying on my shoulders in her mini form. My hair covers her but really I think she just likes being lazy and getting carried around.

'I think I'll introduce you to them now,' I say as I walk out and see them all in the kitchen and connected living room. Even Stephen is here. 

M'gann is talking to Wally while glancing at Superboy and waiting to take the cookies out of the oven while Superboy Kaldur and Robin are all talking together about something and Stephen is sitting down while working on a laptop. I frown as I remember our fight from earlier. 'Is this... Wise?' Iferis questions and she sounds fainter almost. 

'I didn't think I would see the day you would question me,' I joke but somewhere deep down I know that sometimes we don't work perfectly. 

'I am to protect you and your interests... even if that goes against your wishes,' Iferis says and I sigh. Somehow I feel that same gap again.  

Wally sees me and waves me over. "Yo Scar!"

I ignore the nickname and walk over. This is where I need to be, I  tell myself, this is where I want to be. Stephen doesn't even look over at me, I guess he's still mad at me.

I take a breath in and decide what I should say. Anxiety pricks my stomach as I wonder what they'll think, I'm not normal, I'm something strange and unusual. 

Iferis nudges my neck slightly and I push back the lat of my anxiety.

"Uh..." I say to get everyone's attention, "There's someone I would like you to meet."

They all look over at me and I take another breath before stepping back slightly.

"Her name is Iferis." Iferis slips off my shoulder and in a fluid motion, she grows bigger as she falls until her hooves touch the floor and she's her full size again. 

Most of them take a step back and the anxiety comes back again but I bite my lip and wait. "What is it?!" Wally exclaims at the sight of Iferis and she gowls back at him.

"I am not an 'it'," She growls and Robin snickers.

"She and Superboy already have one thing in common then, they both don't like being called it," This gets him a glare from both Superboy and Iferis and a weak laugh from me. 

Kaldur keeps a measured look and I can't seem to figure out what he's thinking. M'gann seems slightly shocked while Superboy and Stephen both seem interested. 

I go to her side and stroke her mane slightly, the orange and red flames start to fan back down to a calm blue and purple. "Ok, that's hot," Wally says and I laugh again as they start to come closer. 

"What is she?" Superboy asks as he looks her over before coming forward and putting out a wary hand. Iferis looks at it in slight disgust but she lets him pet her anyway. 

I smile slightly, for all she hates being compared to a horse she does love attention. "I'm not exactly sure, but she's a companion I guess."

"So cool," Robin mutters as he looks at us. 

I laugh and smile as we talk and they start to talk to both Iferis and me normally. My anxiety leaves and I wonder how I could have doubted them.

A girl sits in a dark alleyway, her black hair is a mess and her skin is streaked with dirt, her eyes are dark and lifeless. She can't be much older than eight. 

"Little mockingbird, don't you say a word bout the day under the tree, the secrets safe with me," She sings slightly and her voice is jagged and misses a syllable everyone once in a while. But even without music, the song is haunting. 

"A warm August day, times like these I wish would stay. A breeze to whisk our problems away. She said she was okay, beneath a tree we both lay. My head was clear but her thoughts astray," She continues to sing as footsteps sound behind her but she doesn't turn to see who it might be.

"Little mockingbird, don't you say a word bout the fight under the tree, the secrets safe with me," She sings before she stops the song as the footsteps stop right behind her. 

"Paterfamilias?" She says as she doesn't turn, but she then pauses to think.

"No..." She trails off as she gets up and turns around as she does so to face whoever it is behind her, "You're more like me... Unpure..."

"Hello Jikan," The person says, it's a man's voice but there's a hint of a smirk in it.

Not very much light falls into the alley but from what light there is you could just make out his face. Pale white skin, blue eyes, and messy blond hair. His features weren't very boyish if anything they seemed more feminine and soft but with a crazed and wild look none the less. He looked to be about 16.

"And who are you?" Jikan asks him as a small smile plays on her lips. 

"Me?" He smirks as if it's a joke, "Call me Erebus."

"And what do you want Erebus?" Jikan asks as the smile goes away slightly. 

"Dawn Morningstar," Is all he answers with and Jikan looks up at him with renewed interest in her eyes.

"And what does she have that you want?" Jikan giggles as she looks at the boy. Her eyes are still like those of a dead fish but there's a glint of something new in them. 

"Everything," He growls as he looks into the distance almost as if she's there.

Jikan turns around as if to leave, "Everything?"

"Yes."

"Erebus, Erebus... You don't get it, you can change the narrative but you can't change the facts. And facts are that this is her story and we're just the supporting characters. You can't replace the main lead." Jikan sings slightly as she turns back round to look at him. "You think you can replace her? That you can destroy her? That path isn't possible."

"It is for me," He growls at the girl who just smiles back. 

"And what do you need me for?" She asks with amusement. 

"I want your help," He says as he looks down at the girl.

She shrugs slightly, a wicked smile plays on her lips, "Why not. I'm tired of being here anyway, why not have a little fun."

Erebus nods and Jikan puts out a hand for him to shake. He does. 

Jikan starts to hum again. 

"Little mocking bird, don't say a word, bout her under the tree. Beyond her peaceful sight, his heart was full of spite. How could everything seem alright?" Jikan turns away and starts to walk down the alley before she stops and turns back as if waiting for him to follow. "He got up so quick it gave her a fright. And soon words turned into a fight." 

He glances over at her before stuffing his hands into his pockets and following. "Little mockingbird, don't you say a word bout the gore under the tree. The secrets safe with me."

And they walked into the dark before completely disappearing into the night.

Dawn hates her life. It's boring and nothing ever happens to her. She wakes up, eats, goes to school, sleeps again and repeats. Boring am I right?

The only light in her life is hearing about the world's Heroes on the news.

Or it was until an unfortunate accident releases a power that neither she nor the other Heroes she loves could have ever imagined.

She knew almost everything on this trail - every tree, pile of rocks, and broken ground. That was one of the badges of a skilled hunter. About ten minutes down the trail Atila noticed something new. On the ground, slightly hidden, was a token. A token was like a calling card and not easily lost. For one to be randomly scattered was no accident.

She picked it up for observation. It was fresh and smelled of rare metals. She did not recognize the signature markings, but could brainlessly guess it belonged to someone rich and powerful. She only hoped it was someone less dangerous than her. It laying here was no coincidence. 

Atila tried to think of anyone who came to this area. Hunters generally had their own unspoken "territory" which most people respected. She drew a blank. Since no one she knew of hunter here, or even lived nearby, she could only guess this token was meant for her. Someone who has heard of her or has gained the skills to even observe her without detection. Someone wanted her to find it. But why?

Now alerted even more, she searched the surrounding area for footprints or any signs of recent presence. She drew her bow as she saw a pair of foot prints. They were fairly fresh, which made her adrenaline rush. Then she saw another. And another. All of them in a circle drawing out from her and the token. This was definitely meant for her. She heard the sudden call of a mockingbird, but she knew it came from a human throat. Chaos immediately sprung as she began to fight for her life.

Aegis Cloud Company is a new company that is made by Haru that gives a service of cloud computing, IT security, firewall, and everything that is related to protection in the IT world.
Haru mostly gave the responsibility to Seri and checked the result from the data, but he had to admit that he was really glad to employ her.
Then the meeting started with the Mockingbird Game Company talking about the result of their game.
Haru had given them five games which they had spent two months to finish and they had already published it on the app store giving a very good result. He wanted to develop more games that were more advanced, but he thought, at least he needed to wait until the smartphone had become popularized further.
'At least in the middle of 2010...' Haru thought, but he also told the CEO of Mockingbird that he would go to the company to talk about the new game. 
Kosaka, who heard the result of Haru's smartphone game company, was dumbfounded since she didn't expect them to be able to generate that much money. 
The second one was the railway company which was the most stable company in his hands.
Haru had changed the previous CEO and looked at the result of the CEO that he had chosen. What he hated most was corruption. He didn't mind giving more wages and dividends to his people, but he didn't tolerate corruption and this railway company had always been full of corruption.
That was why he had set up a team that was formed by Seri to manage the finances of his railway company.

Of course, Nasa had also 10% shares on Instagram and if he wanted to sell it Haru didn't really mind. He was his friend and of course, Haru was very kind to him since this guy was a genius.
Nasa felt quite complicated and dizzy since he didn't expect that his net worth would keep increasing without even noticing it. In the past, he had never thought too much when he was working with him and it had never changed. He thought to let go of his shares since he felt that it was a bit too much, but Haru stopped him telling him that it would be his gift for him after he had married his loved one. 
After that, Haru also told them that he would come to talk about a new app that they would develop again.
After the report of Instagram was over, the next one was Aegis Cloud Company. This company had become a rising star in the IT world since it was very stable and the security was very top-notch with Ritsu, who helped to manage it.
Once again, he was very thankful to Ritsu and wasn't sure what to give to her since she had done a lot of things to him. He remembered Ritsu's wish was to fall in love, but he wasn't comfortable giving her to a male artificial intelligence. He shook his head and decided to think about it later since he wasn't in a hurry and wasn't sure about the solution to this wish. 
The fifth one was Utaha's father who reported the result to the newspaper company.
Utaha's father, who had been listening to the meeting, couldn't help but be proud of his son-in-law.
Ayase (head of Haru's investment company) who was Utaha's father's friend was speechless, but he was quite jealous of Utaha's father since his friend's daughter had gotten the heart of Haru. He suddenly thought about his daughter and wondered whether it was possible to match them. He didn't think that it was wrong for Haru to date both of his daughters and his friend's daughter. 'If that really happens then it is good...' He remembered that there was something known as "hare-kon" on one of the prefectures in this country that made Haru be able to marry more than one person.
Utaha's father didn't know what Ayase was thinking and reported that the number of circulation of the newspaper had increased from 900,000 to 1,5 million.
That meant that 15% of people in Tokyo read Haru's newspaper and he could affect their voices.
It was also the reason why there were a lot of politician's children who wanted to get to know Haru at his school since with such a number their parents' election would be guaranteed.
Utaha's father had also told him that he had started to buy more newspapers around other prefectures and there were more people who came to visit their newspaper website. 
Haru nodded and said, "Thank you, Uncle."
Utaha's father waved his hand and said, "You don't need to worry, it is also for my grandchildren in the future."

Everyone was speechless when they heard it since it was an open secret that Utaha was his girlfriend making the CEO of the railways feel jealous.

Seri blushed and was happy, but then she sighed. "I don't plan to have a relationship since I want to focus on my career first."
"Well...." Haru nodded and said, "There's a lot of rooms in my house and if you want then you can move there."
"Thank you," Seri said since she thought it would be faster to do the job if they lived together.
Ritsu smiled looking at their interaction.

Haru suddenly noticed his phone vibrating and opened it. "Sora, what's wrong?"
"Haru, come back in a hurry! G - Grandfather is coming!!!!" Sora said with panic.

Hello friends to be honest I am unable to continue this anymore, not because I lost interest in it but due to some personal reasons. But it is not dropped so I am gonna write the whole story in Timeline format so as to not leave you guys with an unfinished story.

In the end, Rhona did not take them all the way to Tamal. She looked around the hall as she walked, her gaze sweeping the aisle on both sides, chewing her lip as if debating. She finally stopped about two-thirds of the way up the main table. The Silva deputy reached out and tapped the shoulder of one of the diners. The person turned around, revealing an angular face so sharp it was almost frightening. The girl had thick black hair that fell nearly to her waist, braided with leaves in various places. Her eyes were hazel, her only ornamentation a necklace of forked twigs strung around her neck. Her bird bond, a small falcon Julie thought was called a merlin, fixed Rhona in turn with beady eyes. The girl raised finely curved eyebrows at Rhona in question.

"Fay, would you take them? Make sure nothing happens?" Rhona paused. "For me?" she added, as if she were requesting a favor.

The dark-haired girl looked Julie, Luke, and Seth over. Her companion, a lean, slightly hunched young guy with light blue eyes and a bird with a pointed beak and long tail, was watching now too. He was also wearing glasses, which amazed Julie. They had a single crack in the left lens, but were otherwise normal and intact. They gave him a very scholarly look for a tree-dwelling bandit.

Finally, the girl nodded. She turned to the hunched boy next to her and gave him a light shove. "C'mon, budge up a bit, Monty. Make some room for the ground crawlers."

The bespectacled boy gave her a short punch in retaliation, but it was a friendly blow, just to make sure he got the last say. Then he scooted sideways, bumping along a few more Silva further down, who also complained good-naturedly, but moved.

Feeling more than slightly out-of-place and uncomfortable, Julie squished into the empty space left, followed by Seth and Luke. 

The black-haired girl looked Julie over again, still appraising. Then she held out a slender but callused hand. "Fayola," she said curtly by way of introduction. "Oh, and this is Mercury." She pointed to the merlin, which blinked intelligently at Julie as she shook the girl's hand tentatively.

"And?" The boy beside Fayola prodded pointedly, nudging her with his slightly crooked shoulder.

Fayola rolled her eyes good-naturedly. "And Monty. Feel free to ignore him though."

The boy scowled, as his small tan bird bond hopped lightly to the crown of his head, burying its claw-toed feet in his brown hair. The bird gave out a strange warble that sounded too musical for its drab looks, ending in a completely different whistling cry. Julie stared. 

Monty lifted his eyes like he was rolling them, but he was only looking up at the bird. "This is Emil. He's a mockingbird," he said, as if this explained everything.

Julie felt even more overwhelmed, if that was possible. "Nice to meet all of you," she managed. Luke, sensing her state of mind, leaned around her to conduct the introductions of their group. He used all their real names, but Julie thought that probably didn't matter anymore. Tamal and Rhona had heard them use each others' names already.

"So, we aren't a bother to you or anything, are we?" Seth's question was innocent, but there was a sharply teasing glint in his green eyes. He hadn't missed Rhona's appeal to Fayola. 

Fayola turned in her seat to regard Seth. "Not really. It isn't anything personal, but you are ground crawlers. That just kind of makes you…y'know." She shrugged, apparently not able to come up with any accurate words. Then she looked more closely at Seth. Her eyebrows rose. "Hang on…you're that one, aren't you? Orinda was going on and on about how you run the trees like a Silva. Got to the APO all by yourself, didn't you? Well, then I guess you aren't technically a ground crawler."

"Aw, really." Seth made an exaggerated flicking motion with one hand, as if brushing off the attention. "It was nothing. I'm just a common thief, that's all." So fast Julie wasn't sure she'd seen it, he winked at her, a gesture meant for her alone.

"Hmm." Fayola looked skeptical and appreciative at the same time. Julie felt the slightest frown crease her forehead. Why did everyone keep looking at him like that? "Anyway, Rhona's a good friend of mine. If she says watch out for you, I'll watch out for you."

"Um, thanks I guess." Julie didn't know that she cared for the phrasing, which made it sound like Fayola was babysitting them, but she didn't want to argue.

"Here, have some food." Fayola shoved a bark platter piled with sliced fruits toward the three of them. 

Once again, the lure of fresh food after several days of eating dried trail provisions was enough to banish Julie's misgivings for a while. For approximately the next hour, Julie, Luke, and Seth did little but dig into whatever dish Fayola passed to them. Although they didn't talk much, Julie found herself relaxing in the company of their two Silva neighbors. Fayola seemed friendly, if a little disdainful of them, and it was hard not to like Monty, who chattered animatedly out loud to Emil and kept pushing his glasses up on the bridge of his nose. 

Luke, as always, collected information; he had always been the outgoing one between the two of them. He leaned one elbow casually on the wooden table and asked, "So, not to sound ignorant, but what do you guys actually do? Just…hang out up here?" 

Fayola gave Luke an eloquent look, arching her dark eyebrows. "We're a civilization," she pronounced finally. "You can't tell?"

"Give 'em a break, Fay," Monty said kindly. "They haven't been around much yet."

"Well, from what we've heard, you're just a bunch of tree-dwelling bandits that attack people and steal stuff and live wild." Luke tried hard not to make his tone challenging, but the feeling was there all the same.

Fayola hissed, "We are not common thieves!" at the same time Monty said, "Yep, that pretty much covers the basics." The dark-haired girl scowled at her seatmate, who gave her an impudent grin. 

Glaring Monty into silence, Fayola continued, "We do make much of our livelihood relieving travelers and the rich of their extra possessions. Sometimes that requires force, if they aren't cooperative. We've never killed anyone unless they've directly threatened to harm a Silva."

"How…noble…of you," Luke said sarcastically. 

" 'Relieving people of their extra possessions,'" Seth repeated thoughtfully. "We'll have to remember that one, eh, Corax?" The raven bobbed his head and cawed once in agreement.

"Otherwise, we keep to ourselves. Some people stay with us for a long time, others only a couple years. Some don't like the life. A lot of us are runaways or orphans; a couple were born here. Some of the villages around here actually think it's good luck to have their kids grow up with the Silva Offendo."

"Are they crazy?" Luke exclaimed without thinking. Fayola's answering glare would have cracked stone. 

"Some of them appreciate our take on life," she said coolly. 

"Which is?" inquired Seth, eating a piece of fruit off of Sheridan's blade. 

"Well…live, I guess," Fayola replied, her eyebrows drawing together. "We have everything we need to live and be human up here, we have our bird bonds…mostly, we do what we please."

Julie didn't know if that was the kind of lifestyle she could get used to…but it wasn't a terrible philosophy either. It kind of appealed to an inner part of her that had run wild in the streets, jumping in mud puddles and flicking pebbles at passersby when Mother Acko wasn't watching her.

Finally, Julie felt at ease enough to ask the question she had really been wondering about. "Um, Fayola? Who was it that attacked us? Tamal yelled at someone, but…"

Fayola's face darkened, and that razor-sharpness returned to her features. Monty stared at the table, looking suddenly subdued and almost…ashamed.

"Oh, that. That was Zephyr, and his bond Saturn. He's a bully. The Silva are supposed to be kind of tough, and we look out for each other and everything, but…even I can't find anything to like about him. He's just…he's…" Fayola stabbed a piece of meat violently with her rough wooden utensil, again apparently unable to come up with words to describe Zephyr.

"He's my brother," muttered Monty, still staring at the table.

Fayola shot her neighbor a surprised and sympathetic look, as if she wasn't expecting him to reveal this information. Julie felt equally shocked. This young guy, with mousy brown hair and light blue eyes and glasses and a mockingbird for a bond, was kin to such a bully?

"Yeah." Monty seemed to register their surprise without even looking up. "No one ever believes it. I'm not sure whether I should consider it a complement or not."

Emil the mockingbird let out a sharp, descending note scale that seemed to mirror Monty's sudden glumness. 

Fayola gave him a hard thump on the back that seemed to be part sympathy and part 'snap-out-of-it'. "Well, you're nothing like him and you know it, so stop feeling sorry for yourself."

"Thanks Fay." Monty pinched a handful of grain from a bowl in the center of the table and held it up in his cupped palm for Emil. He looked a little happier.

Julie realized with a guilty start that she had not fed Icarus yet. She felt awful, having violated one of the most basic rules of bonding; tend to your bird as you would yourself.

Ic, I'm sorry. I can't believe I forgot…

Much has happened to us in a short time, Julie. I forgive you. Icarus nibbled her bangs, chirruping affectionately.

"Here." Fayola shoved another bowl towards Julie. It contained a mixture of raw meat scraps, bone bits, and strings of fat and muscle. When Julie looked at her gratefully, the sharp-faced girl just nodded. "I should have shown you how we handle the feeding here first."

Julie took a generous handful of the bloody scraps without reserve and held them up for Icarus. His beak pressed gently against her palm as he delicately picked each shred and gulped it back with a jerk of his gray-black head.

Finally, when both humans and birds had finished their meal, Tamal rose from his chair again. Without preamble, he began reeling off lists of names, sometimes followed by incomprehensible words that might have places or instructions. They sounded like they came from the old language that was inscribed over the entrance to the hall. 

All the Silva were leaning subtly towards Tamal now, listening for their names and what Julie assumed were their orders or assignments. When Tamal had finished, he made a hand gesture that seemed to be half-salute and half-dismissal. 

As if on cue, the entire hall full of Silva rose as one, with a deafening thunder of moved stumps, clattering dishes, and sudden chatter. 

"Well, Tamal didn't assign you three any evening duty," Fayola commented as she stood. "Which means I suppose you could come with Monty and I to do lookout. Good thing we didn't get patrol today; you'd never be able to keep up."

"Um, thanks." Julie wasn't quite sure what the proper response was, but since Fayola gave the impression that she was doing them a kindness by allowing them along, it seemed to make sense to stay on her good side. 

"Come on then. We'll be up on the west side. I assume you can climb a little, even if you can't actually run the trees?" Fayola looked so skeptical that Julie had to give a firm nod, even if she hadn't really had any climbing experience at all.

"You need some help, Monty?" Fayola turned her attention to her neighbor. It was a friendly, routine kind of question, but Julie couldn't imagine why Fayola had offered.

She found out a moment later.

"Nope, I think I've had enough practice by now, Fay." Monty placed one hand on the wooden tabletop, turned his body around on the stump seat, and stood, a little shakily.

Sitting, Monty simply looked as though he were a little shy or scrawny, with his tendency to hunch over the table. But standing, it became clear that it was more than that. One of his shoulders was thrust higher than the other, throwing his arms out of proportion and bending his back into a perpetual curve. He was not quite hunchbacked, like pictures Julie had seen in books, simply very lopsided looking. 

As Julie forced back her shock, she realized Fayola had been watching all three of them shrewdly, waiting for their reactions. Luke looked like he was having a similar struggle to Julie, trying not to appear overly surprised. Seth, on the other hand, looked genuinely unmoved, as though Monty looked perfectly ordinary. Julie wondered if maybe he'd seen this before, or if he simply so observant that he'd noticed before Monty had gotten up.

"Yes, he can climb. Yes, he can fight. Yes, he was born like this. No, it doesn't hurt, but sometimes it makes things awkward." Fayola's voice was cool as she spoke with the flat tones of someone reciting this to others many times. She glanced dryly at Monty. "Did I miss anything?"

"You forgot to mention the perks," Monty said cheerfully. "It gives me great balance, since being bent over makes it easier not to slip and fall. And it makes me an excellent decoy if we need to distract trade caravans or travelers. The poor crippled boy."

Seth gave a soft, appreciative chuckle.

"Well, let's get going. Tamal's very strict about lookouts." Fayola set off at a brisk pace up the clearing aisle between the tables, towards the door. Monty followed her, Emil bobbing on his shoulder. He walked with a strange kind of rolling lope, surprisingly graceful to Julie, who had been expecting a jerky shuffle. 

It had gotten dark outside while they had been eating, and the world Julie emerged into was transformed. Misty shadow engulfed the treetops, creating a web of softly bobbing tree limbs that stretched out into the darkness until it became an indistinct blur. A cool night wind rustled the leaves all around them. Julie saw dark forms go flashing past, just flickers of movement in her vision. Tree branches creaked and whispered as Silva leaped onto them and then away again, seeking their nighttime posts. 

Seth had started feeling his way toward the edge of the branch when a soft hiss from Fayola made him stop. "I don't care how nimble you think you are, thief-boy, you'll break your neck if you start climbing before they light the lamps. Just let the glows do their work."

Julie became aware that bird and human forms were pausing at various spots along the branches. They were just dark smears, but then Julie realized that each smear was being briefly illuminated by short flares of light. When she squinted, she saw that it was flurries of sparks; the Silva up in the trees were striking rocks for fire. There were flutters of feathered forms here and there, as birds of every size and species helped their partners to coax the flames to life. Moments later, Julie was watching in awe as tiny lights began winking into life, one by one, all around them. They seemed to radiate in a wheel outward from the oak tree, spiraling away from the hub of Silva life and off into the depths of the forest. The little lanterns, for Julie saw that was what they were, were comprised of dirty pieces of glass set at angles around a square of what seemed to be bark. Each bark base must have had some kind of fuel on it, because the fires burned steadily without catching anything around them on fire. Strange dark collars encircled the bases of the ingenious lights. Looking directly above her, Julie saw what those were. They made sure that the lights couldn't be seen by anyone passing below, but were clearly visible to everyone in the Silva's above-ground world. 

After a few more minutes, a sharp bird call pierced the trees. The forest of the Silva Offendo now resembled a giant, floating night city, tree branches turned into avenues, trees into buildings. For the first time, Julie began to understand what Fayola had meant when she said the Silva were a whole civilization in the treetops.

"There we go. That's the signal that everything's been lit up. Time to go." Fayola glanced at them. "We'll try to go slow, for your sakes." 

Without even bothering to find an appropriate branch to climb, the dark-haired girl launched herself straight at the oak tree's massive trunk. Using what appeared to be a combination of her nails, palms, knees, and feet, Fayola started scaling the trunk straight up, hand over hand. It looked almost inhuman.

Monty gave a short laugh that seemed to be nothing more than sheer anticipation of climbing and the night air. Rocking lightly on the balls of his feet, he looked up, his glasses sliding back slightly on his nose. Then, with a stunningly athletic bounce for someone whose torso and limbs were completely out of proportion, Monty leaped almost vertically, catching the branch above him and hauling himself up onto it in one smooth motion. He crouched four-legged on the limb, his brown tunic shirt sliding up slightly over his lower back as he hunched, looking more like a tree-dwelling animal than a person.

He grinned down at them, white teeth flashing, his light blue eyes taking on a deeper color in the flickering tree lights. "You still haven't asked me one question yet."

Only Seth seemed to have the voice enough to manage, "And what's that?"

"How do my glasses stay on?" Monty laughed, as if at some private joke, and then set the branch he was on rattling and raining leaves down on them as he vaulted higher still. Julie was surprised that one of them didn't flutter into Luke's unabashedly open mouth.

Seth sighed and placed his hand on the oak's trunk. "You know, I could probably climb up this without too much trouble. But after that…it would be like a sparrow following a bald eagle. C'mon. I'll show you two how to find handholds. Hopefully the shift won't be over by the time we make it up there
