Their first meeting was horrible. Min-Soo frappe was touched by an IDOL. How can one be so lucky? Welp Min-Soo thinks otherwise.

With a wave of tremble, the Wuling Hong Guang drove up to the sidewalk and stopped in front of the pet shop.
The door opened and Zhang Zian got off the car.　　
The chic ladies glanced at him while they passed by, then covered their noses in disgust and kept a distance from his car.

As soon as he entered the bathroom, he saw Sihwa hide something in a hurry.　　
He pretended not to see it. After turning on the tap, he asked, "Why aren't you broadcasting today?"　　
Sihwa was angry and humiliated after hearing his question. "Today… I'm not in the mood today! I don't want to broadcast!"　　
"Okay. It's nice to take a day off sometimes." Zhang Zian wiped his hands, then left the bathroom.　　
"Wait a moment!" Sihwa shouted behind him.　　
"What is it?" Zhang Zian stopped.　　
"Emm… This… Emm… That…" she stuttered. Her pale face turned red because she needed his help. After stammering for a long time, she took out a book from under a towel. "I can't read. What can I do?" she asked, troubled. "I know a few Korean words, but not any Chinese words…"　　
She could play with the phone, as the phone functions were simple––as long as she remembered the icons. She could make guesses on others, or ask Zhang Zian if it was too hard to guess. However, reading a book full of Chinese characters was mission impossible to her.　　
In fact, she had learned a few Chinese words since she had arrived in China. But she had learned them mechanically; she didn't have any formal, systemic teaching.
"You must be laughing at me, aren't you? You absolutely are!" She pointed at his face in fury before Zhang Zian had even said anything. She was almost embarrassed to tears.
"I'm not laughing at you. It's normal to be illiterate. Nobody is born literate." Zhang Zian shrugged. "Otherwise, they'd be a freak."　　
After hearing his words, Sihwa's mood calmed down a little.　　
"Well… Is there anything you can do to make me literate?" she asked, lowering her head.　　
"Yes. Lend me your phone for a moment." Zhang Zian took her phone and downloaded a few early childhood education apps from the app store. They were all basic-level, but entertaining word learning apps nonetheless; he started with Pinyin, which had real people's voices. The apps were already quite developed, and the functions were complete.　　
He compared a few quickly, then left the most user-friendly one and deleted the rest.　
"Here you are. Follow this. You'll learn them soon." He gave the phone back to her.　　
"Wow! So childish!" She complained as soon as she saw the interface for young kids. "Are there any long-legged Oppas or big-boobed girls teaching the lessons?"　　
"Save it. I'd love to learn if these teachings existed!" Zhang Zian took up her book and flipped through it. The book from Old Time Tea was not suitable.　　
He returned the book to Pi, then found a few fairy tale books with pictures from his childhood book collection. Each character was marked with a Pinyin illustration.　　
"After you learn Pinyin, you can read these books. Just learn the words while reading the stories." He piled the books on the bathroom closet. "Oh, right––books are not waterproof. Dry your hands before you read them. These are books from my childhood. Most of them can't even be found these days."

Mulan looks at skye and gave him the puppy dog eyes as she asked softly " Am I going to read all of these books?" seeing Skye nodding at her question, she felt like crying. In all her life she has never met something that was as hard to understand as the language called English. It was extremely hard and the original body owner seems to be terrible at the language so her only option now is to listen and learn it from her tutor. But still, she wanted to at least try her luck in getting out of the torture she's about to be in. 
" But these books are really thick. How am I suppose to finish it?" She asked as her head fell onto the table with a loud thud. She wanted him to have pity on her and lessen her torture. 

Skye looks at her completely bewildered. He can't understand why she's making that face as if she's on the verge of crying. He finds it so weird because she is making all this face because of English. A language that is ten times easier than learning Korean language.
" How many subjects do you find difficulties with?" Skye asked gently as he already figured out that English is something that the previous body owner doesn't understand, so he wants to help her as soon as possible because he will be leaving this school in two months time and go back home. A place where he understands what the people around him are saying.

Mulan raised her head a little and placed her head on her arm, looking outside the window as she said. " Mathematics, English, French and  Japanese. I think that's all" 

Skye's eyes lit up as the things she's terrible at where quite easy for him. He was actually scared she will say Korean. So he said calmly but one can still hint the slight happiness in his voice. "Easy, But first you need to read these books at home and tomorrow I will start tutoring you. These are the basic steps of learning English and French. If you can't understand other subjects, don't hesitate to tell me and..." Skye fished out his pen from his pocket and opened the book and wrote down his phone number on the hard cover, which was something quite rear. The people who have his phone number can be counted with fingers because they only include his friends or family. Skye continued " You can call me anytime if you don't understand anything, okay! And I mean it when I say  anything"

Mulan looks at him, surprised. He was given her his time just to tutor her and he even said she should give him a call whenever she didn't understand anything. Life in this new world would be a lot easier because of him. So she was really grateful for that. 
She looks at Skye and skye at the moment just finished writing his phone number and the moment he lifted his head, their eyes met. They gazed at each others eyes for a good minute before skye said to break the awkward silence. 
" Do you want to say something?" 
" Thank you!" Mulan said sincerely. Her eyes showing him how grateful she truly is. 
"It's not--" He didn't even finish his sentence before Mulan cut him off. " No I'm really thankful to you. You saved my life, 
Took me to the hospital and paid for my hospital fees but you still said it was nothing and now you're tutoring me, giving me your time just to be my teacher. So I'm really thankful to you! Thanks so much for all that you've done to me even when I am a stranger to you! Thank you" Skye just listened to all she said calmly. He didn't think what he did deserve all that thanks from her but he was touched by her. So he said sincerely with his deadly gorgeous smile that reveals his cute dimples as he Said " I thank you too! And you're welcome" 
When Mulan saw his smile, her nose almost bleed. All this time she has been trying not to show it but his smile was really out of this world. It was like a bright sun that shine through the darkness of the world, bringing live to the world. After a minute, Mulan came back to earth after seeing his deadly smile. Her heart began to palpitate in her chest as she can hear how fast it was beating that she started praying Skye wouldn't hear it.

His words immediately made Lily laugh. "Well… Grandma Ye wanted to learn. I believe she did it secretly as I never saw her read something not in Pinyin when she was in the Qin residence. Or maybe there was really a problem with my memory." She stared at the stack of books on the table to her left. "But yes, I agree with you. That is extremely strange."
"So… did she teach you how to read these books?"
"A few words in Latin." She answered. "I was not particularly that bright while growing up and my interests were not into learning so I believe… she gave up when she noticed that I was not really interested to learn? So… I forgot most of it. I believe… I remember counting in Latin? But that was it."
"So she taught you Latin but not English?"
"No. Just Latin." At that time Lily did not think too much about it. First, she is not really interested in learning another language. Even her grasp of English at that time was weak— so weak it is embarrassing to even talk about it. Second, what kind of books were printed in latin? At that time she was extremely ignorant and simple minded. Third, she did not spend a lot of time with her grandmother as she was sent to a boarding school that was located near the orphanage before.

Yoon Shik started learning from Baek Chun after he was done with his work in the restaurant in the evening. The door of his room was opened and he turned to look. It was none other than Jang Shiwo, his abeoji(father). "Abeoji, do you want something?," asked Yoon and stood up from the cushion. 

"No no, son. I saw the light from your room, that's why I came inside." Shiwo looked  at the books at the table nearby Yoon and asked," are you studying?"

"Yes. I was learning how to read and write. I've learnt it recently," mumbled Yoon. "Abeoji, you should sleep. It's late night," said Yoon looking at Shiwo. 

Shiwo smiled and caressed Yoon Shik's head and said, "I was going to sleep. You should sleep too. If you want to study then study only. You don't have to work." Shiwo's eyes have concern for Yoon which Yoon never saw in his real father. It made him teary eyed and he whispered, "Abeoji, thank you for taking us as your children." Saying this Yoon Shik broke into tears after all he was a ten years old kid. 

Shiwo patted at Yoon Shik's back and said, "haha. I'm happy that I've got such a beautiful family. A good son and a good daughter." Yoon Shik rubbed his eyes and told him that he should sleep as it's late night. Shiwo then walked out of the room and told Yoon not to take stress. 

The days passed like this and in two months he caught up with many things. He used to take old books from Jangmi's bookstore on rent at a lesser price. Still Baek Chun and Jangmi used to tell him he shouldn't aim for such things which are impossible to achieve by a Sangmin. 

"Yoon Shik, you're still behind that thing. Chinese classical and literature isn't a cup of tea. You don't know how much trained teachers are being appointed for regal kids and Yangban kids. The time and energy you're wasting in this thing, you should utilize it somewhere." Jangmi mumbled while checking the books for his store. 

"Jangmi, give me these books," said Scholar Taehyo . He has worn high silk quality clothes and a long hat on his head. Jangmi handed him the books. "I've specially brought this for you from China," murmured Jangmi and smiled. 

"I know. Here take this," said Taehyo and handed him a pouch filled with silver coins. "Well there's some old books. I'll send someone tomorrow here with those books," muttered Taehyo. Yoon Shik who was hearing their conversation got happy hearing this.

"Excuse me, Sir," said Yoon Shik. Taehyo looked at Yoon Shik. Jangmi too looked at Yoon. "Yes," mumbled Taehyo. 

"Sir, what are those books about?," asked Yoon Shik. 

"That is needed by a Scholar," answered Taehyo.

"Can you give me those books? I can pay you," said Yoon Shik with a smile. Jangmi started laughing and then patted at Yoon Shik's shoulder and said, "this kid means that he will take them from you and then pay it for you." Turning to Yoon Shik, Jangmi said, "Yoon Shik you don't have to go. I'll take care of this. Baek Chun is waiting for you. Go in," said Jangmi, gestured to Yoon to go away and smiled. 

"Sir, why to bother your man? I will send someone to your house. You don't have to worry," said Jangmi while smiling. Taehyo called his servant inside and told him to carry the books. After that they head out from there. Jangmi took a breath of relief and shouted Yoon Shik's name. Hearing his name Yoon Shik came out of the room which was on the left side of the counter. 

"Ahjussi, why are you shouting?," asked Yoon. Jangmi sat on the wooden stool there and said, "Yoon Shik, you can't tell those people about your aim. I mean they are upperclassmen. They won't find it good if they get to know that a low class is trying to do this. Everyone in this world isn't good. So, from now on you won't do such a thing," muttered Jangmi. Yoon Shik shook his head. 

"Now go home. Here, this bag. I've put some old books on your request the previous day. You don't have to return these," said Jangmi. Yoon Shik nodded; thanked him and then left the bookstore. 

He was walking through the market street and stood outside a big cloth house. "Hani wanted to have that hanbok dress (traditional women Korean dress)," murmured Yoon looking at a pink silk dress. He took out the money pouch and counted the money. "I don't have enough money. Maybe later," muttered Yoon and turned back when he was hit by some kid and the boy fell on the ground. "Ahh Sorry," apologized Yoon Shik. 

The boy got up in anger. "How dare you hit me? You filthy low class," shouted the boy at him. He was the same age as Yoon Shik. Hearing this Yoon became angry. 

"I've apologized for my mistake. You don't have to call me a low class," muttered Yoon Shik. 

The boy got angry hearing this and almost hit Yoon when someone stopped him. "Chan Sul, don't beat a low class who isn't worthy of your touch," mumbled a boy. Yoon Shik turned to look at who's saying this and it was none other than the boy from the garden, Sung Tae. Sung Tae was three other boys namely Do Yeong, Ro Sangpo and Wang Wook. 

Sung Tae glared at Yoon Shik. Yoon Shik did not talk with them so she turned to go when Wang Wook snatced the cloth bag which was hanging around Yoon's shoulder. Yoon Shik immediately turned to stop him but it was late. 

"Books," murmured Sung Tae. He started laughing so are the others except Do Yeong. Yoon Shik tried snatching it but Ro Sang and Chan Sul held Yoon's arms tightly. Sung Tae then smoothing at Yoon Shik threw the books on the ground. 

"So you are actually thinking of becoming like us. A Sangmin is  thinking of becoming a Scholar," mumbled Sung Tae, glaring at Yoon.

"Sung Tae, let it be. He's just a layman," murmured Do Yeong trying to stop the fight. The people around them were looking at them but no one came there to stop them, not even the people inside the store house who were looking at them. 

"Do Yeong, he wants to become like us. Don't you know such people create rebellion in the near future. As the son of the prime minister it's also my duty to check such people, especially such rebellious boys," muttered Sung Tae. 

"Leave me," shouted Yoon at them and tried releasing himself.

"Okay then I won't do anything like beating you. Let's tear these books," muttered Sung Tae and looked at his left where his personal guard was standing a few meters away from him. "No, you can't do this," shouted Yoon. Sung Tae smiled and gestured to his guard to do so. The guard tore the books apart into pieces and then threw them on the ground. Tears started flowing from Yoon Shik's eyes. Sung Tae smirked at Yoon and told Chan Sul and Ro Sang to leave him. 

"Why did you do that?," yelled Yoon Shik at Sung Tae. 

"To tell you that a low class can't reach our level. Feed this in your mind that a low class can't dream big and whoever tried to do so will be given such punishments," saying this Sung Tae walked ahead of Yoon, hitting at his shoulder. 

Do Yeong didn't say anything and walked away from there. Chan Sul, Wang Wook and Ro Sang too hit Yoon's shoulder with theirs and walked ahead when Yoon said, "A person who has a low thinking with filthy thoughts is a low class."

They all turned to look at him. Yoon too turned to look at Sung Tae and both were glaring at each other. Before Sung Tae could say anything to Yoon Shik, he picked his cloth bag from the ground and walked away from there.

On Hiatus for some weeks


"Why should I bow before that man?", asked a kid.

"He's a top aristocrat of this kingdom. Kid, we're low classmen. We are born in a lower class that's why we have to bow before him," stated the man.

"Can I be like him? I also want to be respected by people," said the kid with an affirmed voice.

"Hahaha. You're good in joking, kid. A lowclass can't become a Scholar like them," mumbled the man and walked away. 


Determined to become a Scholar like the man described, the kid decided to be like the one he saw on the very first day in the kingdom city. 

Lost his mother & father; pushed away his lover, the protagonist Kim Yoon Shik negotiated all the difficulties in his path and finally achieved the dream that he has seen in his childhood.

Before returning home, Juho decided to make a brief visit to the bookstore. There was something he needed to buy.

On his way to a bookstore nearby, a foreigner caught Juho's eyes. Her antsy behavior made it obvious that she was lost. Whenever she tried to reach out to talk to someone, people would walk away in a hurry. If things had been anything like how they used to be, Juho probably would have done the same.

However, with the language acquisition device in his head, Juho was now able to face that foreigner's language with confidence.  

"Do you need help?" he asked the foreigner in English.

Her eyes sparkled upon hearing her native tongue, and the foreigner answered back in English, "Yes, please! I'm looking for a lodging location named 'Arabia,' but I have no clue on how to get there."

"Hm, one moment."

Juho had never heard of the place. After a brief moment thinking, he lead the foreigner into a nearby real estate office. A drowsy employee jumped out of his seat at their presence. 

"Could you give me directions to a lodging location named 'Arabia?'" 

"Ah, yes! One moment."

The employee searched for something in a hurry. Upon finding the place, he pointed to the location using a map on the wall. Juho translated simultaneously as the employee explained how the place could be reached and felt the employee staring at him in amazement. 

"Oh, I know this place. It was across that one grocery store. I've been walking around this area in a circle."

The foreigner smiled brightly. She must have been scared of getting lost in a foreign country. 

"Have a great trip!"

"Oh, thank you so much! This is why I can't stop travelling even though I get lost every time." 

Saying that a helper could always be found, she went on her way after thanking Juho. He waved as she turned around. The brief relationship had come to an end, and Juho too made his way back to the bookstore.

The large bookstore was booming with people. He walked past the long line of people waiting for their turn at the cashier. 'The Trace of a Bird' was on display on the first rack that crossed Juho's eyes. People standing in front of the rack were examining the book. After watching them briefly, Juho turned back. 

It had been a while since he had been to a bookstore. Wanting to peruse, Juho walked over to the literature section. The books were divided by the authors' names, and they were all famous writers.

As he scanned through the books, Juho stopped in front of one author's name, Dong Gil Uhm. Right next to it was another author named Seo Joong Ahn. The bookstore might have placed them very close to each other deliberately. 

Those two authors were a renowned duo in the literature world.

Their history went back to their birth. They were born two months apart in the same neighborhood and went to the same school throughout elementary, middle school, and high school. Dong Gil Uhm had revealed in his essay that he and his friend Seo Joong Ahn had been in the same class six times in the past. 

Their path seemed to finally split in their college years, but Seo Joong Ahn ended up getting thrown out of his dorm. In the end, he stayed at Dong Gil Uhm's house through university. 

Now, those two friends were working in the same field as authors. Both had become successful in their profession, and their friendship was truly inseparable. 

Juho had read a novel that had been co-written by the two authors. It had been a popular read then, and that had been rightfully so. Juho had enjoyed it a lot. Written by two, polar-opposite people, that book had brought about a sensation that was both hot and cold.

"Dong Gil Uhm."

Juho had read his work quite a bit when he had been older. Most of his books were based on true events, and his expressions, too, were realistic. His satire was honest, cold, and sharp. His style was both concise and masculine. Once in an interview, Dong Gil Uhm had revealed that he looked up to Ernest Hemingway. 

Juho picked up a book and felt the coolness of the cover. The book was named 'Genius.' Though he had planned on looking at it briefly at first, he ended up buying the book out of impulse.

He walked into the specialized section. On the floor, there was a person sitting down, reading. Juho walked past his legs and kept on walking. The shelves were divided into categories. After scanning through them one by one, he eventually found the words he had been looking for: original language.

There was no one around. Because it was in the inner part of a section, the original language shelf was shaded by the surrounding shelves. The books were in various languages, and the section gave off a secretive vibe. Perhaps, it had something to do with the shelf being in the shade.

English, Chinese, Japanese, French, Spanish, German, Latin, Russian, Finnish… These books were written in a wide variety of languages. Some were written in languages that weren't as well known, like Welsh, Scandinavian, Gothic, and Lombardian. Juho had the urge to buy each and every one, but he had made up his mind to limit himself to three books. 

After some contemplation, he picked up a book written in Japanese. There were adorable characters on its red cover. Thanks to that book, the secretive vibe of the section vanished completely. 

In the first page, there were Katakana and Hiragana. 

'Click.'

There was a sound in Juho's head as soon as he began reading the book. It was the sound of a button being pushed.

The device began to work. The next page, and then another page. The pace of the turning pages was picking up, and Juho's device was acquiring the universal grammar of the Japanese language.

"Hello. Nice to meet you. Did you eat? Waste of resources. Destruction of the environment. What is your opinion? What day is it today? It's a holiday. It's snowing out. Clear skies. Have a seat. Should we have a drink? I'm in a good mood. Thank you."

As Juho murmured random phrases in Japanese, the man reading on the floor glimpsed over at him. Ignoring him, Juho engulfed himself in the fascinating sensation in his head. 

It was like smelling with his nose.

The language acquisition device detected the scent of a language. It was a natural process. 

Juho pulled out another book from the shelf. German. The book had been written specifically for travellers, 'Guten Tag.' From basic greetings to flight, lodging, restaurants, shopping, transportation, phone and emergencies, the book was organized into categories. 

'Click.'

There was that sound again. Juho tried to focus his attention at his head. It somewhat felt like there was heat radiating from his temple. 

After reading through several books, Juho picked up three of them. They were in German, French, and Spanish. He planned on learning as many other languages as he could.

The cashier was quiet, and Juho paid for his books without much trouble.

"Mr. James. I'm here to get your stuff."

Juho went into the English class. It was a class being taught by James, the native English instructor. Since the centipede incident, Juho had started talking to James frequently. After discovering, in the process, that Juho was extremely interested in the English language, James told him that he would provide him with resources on Medieval and Old English, and Juho gladly accepted his offer. 

"Give me a moment. I'm in the middle of transferring the data. It's almost done," James answered him in a natural English. He was already aware of Juho's level of skill. 

In response, Juho replied in English, "Sure. Do you think I'll be able to pick it up before club activities?"

"Of course! Here, done!"

He handed back the flash drive he had borrowed from Juho. In the flash drive, Juho would probably find the history of the English language that James had studied as a student. He picked it up with a grateful heart.

"If you get stuck, come find me. I did put in some notes, but it's still not an easy read."

"Great, thank you!"

"You don't have to thank me. Now, I feel like an actual a teacher. Dealing with drowsy students is so boring that it makes me yawn," James said as he pretended to yawn. 

It was an exaggerated gesture, but Juho saw a resemblance with someone in his struggle of developing an affection for school life, "Are you close with Mr. Moon by any chance?"

"He helped me out a few times when I was studying Korean. We ate together too. The pork belly was delicious." 

It was slightly amusing to picture the two grilling together. James lowered his voice and asked Juho discreetly, "Did you know that Mr. Moon hates boiled carrots? I saw him separating them from his food and setting them aside."

"Boiled Carrots."

He hadn't seemed like a picky eater. That was unexpected. 

"I made fun of his appetite, and he got angry, asking where I had learned to say things like that. Thanks to him, I learned a new verb in Korean."

'What an amazing teacher.' As James was about to continue, the door opened. Juho turned around and saw Mr. Moon standing with a stack of printer paper. 'I guess he's not all that gentlemanly-like afterall,' he thought. 

"Hi."

"Mr. Moon, why come here?" following Juho's greeting, James asked Mr.Moon with his slightly awkward Korean pronunciation. 

After looking at the two, one after the other, he waved the stack of papers in his hand.

"The printer in the staffroom isn't working, so that's why I'm here. What are you doing here, Juho? Isn't it time for club activities?" 

"I'm here to learn English."

"I don't recall you being so diligent. You never came to me, and I never saw you in the staffroom."

There he went again with his blunt remarks. 

"I'm interested in the English language."

Mr. Moon seemed to be surprised by Juho's answer. At that moment, James spoke up, "Juho is a hard-working student. He's highly skilled in the language. He has a deep understanding of the English language. He speaks with me mostly in English."

"Is that so? I had no idea. What do you guys talk about usually?"

"There's really no preference from our daily lives to current events. At times, we talk about the centipede that we let go out into the backyard. He's very fun to be around." 

Mr. Moon said as he rubbed his chin, "Then I must've heard it right when I heard my name come up." 

"Hm. Um. Mr. Moon's words. I don't understand. What?" James was at loss of words. It was one of those moments when his Korean was put to to the test. 

Juho decided to leave the room to not be a hindrance between the two. As he attempted to sneak out, Mr.Moon caught him like a hawk and said, "You were on your way to the science room, weren't you? Let's go together."

"Yes, Mr. Moon."

Until Mr.Moon finished with his business, Juho kept fiddling with his flash drive in his pocket. As Mr. Moon and Juho went on their way, James said brightly, "Come again." 

"Take care." 

After nodding lightly, the two went out to the hallway. 

It was quiet. The students had already gone into their respective classrooms. Juho had lost track of time talking to James. If Mr. Moon hadn't shown up, he would've been late. 'I should be careful from now on,' thought Juho.

While walking quietly, Mr. Moon spoke up, "I read your paper. There was a lot of character and personality in the end." 

"Was there?" Juho answered as if he didn't know. 

"You must have experience writing."

"Pardon me?"

"There's stability in your sentences. There's no awkwardness, especially in longer sentences. That's impossible to accomplish unless you're an experienced writer. Well, I suppose it could be possible for a prodigy."

Juho hesitated. 

<Language Acquisition Device> The End

Yum Woo is the youngest author in history to enter the literature world. His debut work was a massive hit but this success was short lived for the unprepared.

A miraculous second chance comes his way one day.

This is the beginning of that journey.

After talking with Cindy for a couple hours, Iris felt completely refreshed. It had been a while since they had a good heart to heart chat together. Caught up in the wave that was BTS and Big Hit, Iris had neglected her cousin who had so staunchly supported and followed her here for morale. It was then that she realized how much she appreciated and took for granted the unwavering pillar that was Cindy.

Thus, she mulled over the prospect of becoming a trainee as well as her parents' reaction. She considered it more thoroughly and calmly, weighing the pros and cons alongside the big "if monster" and possibility of regretting not taking this leap for the rest of her life.

By the end of the week, the song was done, and Iris had finally settled on her decision. She would go for it. Maybe only hardship would follow. Maybe she would be ostracized. Maybe she wouldn't be on speaking terms with her parents after this. It could take a long time to heal wounds and demonstrate that she had the ability to be successful in another way—a way which made her truly happy in being able to utilize her talents and passion.

Iris entered Bang PD's office. This could be her last day at Big Hit. Flurries of excitement and wracking nervousness shook the girl who was not yet twenty. But from now on, there was no turning back, no "what if's." Like the leap that V took in the Prologue Trailer, Iris too, would take that jump into the unknown both full of elation and sorrow.

One year later. May 2018.

"Iris! Are you going to the dance practice room?" J-Hope called after Iris who was in front of him. She turned around at the voice with questioning eyes. Jogging up to her side, he continued, "I have a new choreo that I want to show you!"

"New choreo? Hoseok-hyung, why are you working on a new choreography when you have a world tour starting in September? There's still plenty of time, but…" Iris shook her head with a small smile. This dance machine couldn't ever stop. Both he, Jimin, and Jungkook would frequently dabble around with moves. While it was for fun, usually some of the moves stuck, and they would show them to Son Sungdeuk, the performance director.

"Haha! You know me! I get jittery when it's in-between albums like this." J-Hope flashed his sunny smile, the smile which Iris had the honor of seeing several times daily.

As the only female trainee at Big Hit, they all treated her like a brother. That's why half of the members tagged on the usual "hyung," brother ending to her name sometimes. It was a good, clearly identifiable line drawn by using this address. They could all be close without getting too close and worrying about romantic feelings suddenly arising.

The other half of the members who didn't choose to call her "hyung" merely felt it was improper or too odd. However, all of them at various times had called her that unconsciously because of their tight relationship. Iris often took part in the composing of their songs, and vice versa for the solo album she would eventually release. It was a mutual business relationship as well as a friendship.

To the younger trainees of Big Hit, the new boy group preparing to debut before spring in 2019, Iris was still addressed as "noona," their older sister. Unlike BTS who had a bit of an odd relationship with her, a more definite line was drawn surrounding Iris and the younger boys.

In fact, she interacted with the trainees much less than BTS. It was in part to them not knowing one another as well as she knew BTS. And it also included the differences between their social and age groups. Lastly, it was still up in the air whether she would debut before or after the second boy group.

"By the way, do you know what day today is?" J-Hope's smile curled into a mischievous grin.

"No, what day?" Iris softly chuckled.

"Ah, I'm not telling." J-Hope crossed his arms with a mock pout that was awfully cute.

"Hyung~~ tell me," begged Iris playfully and made puppy eyes.

"Iris, you're so forgetful seriously! How could you forget?! It's okay though. It's better for us." A sly twinkle glimmered in his eyes. He knew Iris had been feeling stressed out over the date of her debut, so he attributed that as the reason for her forgetting it was the one year anniversary since she joined Big Hit.

Since BTS hadn't been able to personally congratulate her at the time one year ago because they were on tour, out of the country until fall, everyone had been secretly preparing a surprise party for her the whole week.

Iris was usually very quick—she picked up on a lot, meaning she often worried a lot too, but she didn't even notice the well disguised tiptoeing of the BTS members around her the last several days. 

"Better for you?" Iris frowned while trying to wrack her brain for the answer. Finding none, she dropped the subject. As J-Hope seemed to suggest, she would find out eventually. For now, she needed to continue training harder.

She already was able to speak fluently in terms of high degree conversation. Books were another hurdle, but she could understand the lower level books of grade schoolers. They often helped with her learning sentence structure and vocabulary too. The order of subjects, verbs, and other placements were opposite and counter-intuitive to an English speaker.

Of course, the biggest help was Namjoon. They both mutually helped one another with language, she in Korean and he in English. Thus their frequent study sessions had helped one another excel considerably.

Oftentimes, Iris would giggle to herself thinking about all the envious fangirls who would like to receive one on one tutoring with Namjoon. But then she thought about how she could get ripped to shreds by them too, so she would then dispel any notions on the whole matter.

Think positive. That's what she had been trying to do since detaching herself from LA and her family. It was a painful process that left behind even her cousin; although, Cindy was able to visit unlike her parents. Thankfully, the BTS members had really helped with the emotionally difficult transition. She became part of the Big Hit family.

**Important Note: This is about a fictional OC girl surviving in the music industry and set in real, modern times. **

Synopsis:

BTS, Bangtan Sonyeondan, Bulletproof Boy Scouts, Beyond The Scene. The idol group had various names, but to Iris, BTS would forever be her inspiration, both in music and in life.

She had first encountered them by accident during BTS’s American Hustle Life. Curious and smitten by the adorably awkward boys who couldn’t speak English very well, she later discovered that they were K-pop idols. Upon discovering K-pop, she realized her passion for singing and dancing. She joined the Korean Culture Club at her university and participated in K-pop dance covers.

But as a practical girl, she never pursued music seriously. As a second generation American to Thai and Chinese parents, she felt a responsibility to graduate college and be a successful businesswoman. But BTS was the wildcard in her life. When she fatefully met them again during their Wings world tour, her life would never be the same again.

Tossed into the brutal world of K-pop, she became somehow became a Big Hit trainee!

Genres: Fan Fiction, (side) Romance Fiction

Question: Why is this listed as Realistic Fiction instead of Fan Fiction?

1) The MC is Iris Huang, a fictional character along with her family and the other Big Hit trainees. Any k-pop idols included in this story are secondary leads.

2) BTS are not the only k-pop included in this story; thus, this is more of a k-pop fanfic if anything. With that said, they are more integral to the story than the others.

But because this story began as an entry into the BTS writing competition, I have since after its end gotten some hate for writing it merely due to BTS fanfics swamping the Fan Fiction section. (I really don't see the case for it because the top popular fan fics listed only showed 3 BTS fan fics including mine much lower down the browsing results. But with the contest, the sudden influx probably messed up the New section.)

In short, imagine this as a fictional story that's realistic in being set in the modern world and time with real-life people's names. This story was never completely about BTS, it was about Iris surviving in the music industry. It's like saying a fantasy story can't also be a romance; even though, the story may be listed under Fantasy as the main genre.

3) I see stories on here not listed as fan fiction when they're based on TV shows and series, and the story MC is clearly the MC of that original show. Since I think my story follows Realistic Fiction more than as a BTS fan fiction since it isn't totally centered around them, I changed it two weeks after the competition ended. Additionally, now no one can complain about their favorite fan fiction being overrun by BTS ones.... I don't want to inadvertently add to the hate that BTS receives for stupid reasons like this.

Ace picked up the phone, it was his grandmother calling, surprising, not because it was on a Sunday morning, but because it was her calling him, not the other way around.
"Hello Samantha, good morning"
"Good morning to you too, how are things going around there?",  'Ah, she wants to know how the meetings went', Ace thought, thinking of the best way to respond
"Well, for the most part, I made a deal with Lucrum, and as you know, they asked for a meeting. However, as you are probably aware, things with Epsilon did not go as well, she thought I was just a vulnerable kid and tried to blackmail me."
"How did it go?", there was myrrh in her voice, she obviously knew how it went, but she wanted him to tell her, to judge him on what emotions he would display during his response.
"Well, I destroyed her life, and Epsilon knows it, they will now have to try harder, and of course, I will drive an even harder bargain, they will not be happy."
"Good. I am proud of you.", and she hung up
Ace let out a sigh of relief, he knew he had passed her test, he would not even be surprised if she was the one that leaked the info, just as a way to see whether he would comply to her demands, and buckle under pressure.
What Ace did not know, however, was that on the other side of the line, Samantha and Veronica were smiling, happy with how fast and well he had grown.
Ace had a pretty busy day ahead of him, he would have to sort through all his notifications, but luckily, he had a plan to deal with it. There was a reason other than hacking as to why he had wanted to learn how to write programs and code in general. He had another project, this one of great importance, that he had wanted to begin working on since forever. He was going to build his own A.I.
He did not want a stupid one, though, he was going to build a self-learning A.I. A monster that only he would be able to control. He would feed it all the information he could find, on anything, and then have it create a schedule for his life, one that would help him optimise his time to the maximum, without becoming boring or repetitive.
He had built it himself, truthfully, the premise of it was simple, the problem was that it required expensive technology for it to truly shine, it would have to be hooked to a high-speed connection that would allow it to download vast quantities of data in a short time. He had, of course, asked for help from a few of his grandmother's employees. He had promised them that he would share the source code with them. Of course, only before asking his grandmother. 
She was fine with it, they would remain loyal to her no matter what, and having one for the whole group would increase their capabilities by a large margin. Of course, she also knew they would not share the source code themselves since it would create security threats if they did so.
And it was in this way that Ace built Alfred. Ace had not actually chosen the name, the A.I. had, it had for some reason developed an admiration for the resourceful butler, and it seemed that it inspired to be the same. He had fed it all types of information, he had begun with defence protocols it could put in place to protect itself, Ace had put some of his own, but the A.I. would be able to build its own, and update them as it was needed. He had then made it learn all about video games, streaming and social media. It had, for some reason, also learnt about pop-culture, and in one night, had learnt all the internet culture had to offer.
The A.I. that was now hooked all over the house, connected by speakers that lined all over the room to the supercomputer Ace had built in a room adjacent to his. He asked it to sort through all messages on his accounts, and once it had done so, give the correct and appropriate responses. It knew that if anything interesting came up, it - well he, would have to inform Ace.
In this way, his work for the day was sorted, and he could go relax and do his own thing. He caught up on a few novels, his enhanced brain could now read at extreme speeds, and looked through some advanced etiquette guides Samantha had sent him. He memorised all the information, as he always did, and sent a message to his grandmother that he had finished. She seemed to find it important that he learnt all about various topics, so she sent him guides, books and videos on all sorts of things. Ace, wanting to oblige, ensured he committed them to memory. 
It was in this way that he had learnt all sorts of interesting things, he had no idea whether they would ever be of any use to his grandmother, they probably would. To his surprise, his grandmother answered fast, however, it was only a one-word reply: [Languages]. Ace laughed, his grandmother had realised that his brain seemed to have no limit, so she decided to challenge Ace as much as she could. There was a link to a file in another message. As Ace clicked on it, he groaned, his free time would be cut in half. His grandmother wanted him to dominate all the languages she considered 'important', meaning, the ones that would open the most doors for him. This included German, Spanish, French, Arabic, Mandarin, Korean and Japanese. She told him that if needed, she would send a tutor to teach him, to which he replied: [No.]. If anyone else found out about his learning speed, there would be a problem.
In true Goldsign fashion, she wanted him to learn them all. Ace was of course already on it, he had always thought it would be wonderful to travel to various places and enjoy them to their fullest, so in his downtime (downtime = lesson time), he had begun learning various languages. He could speak, French, Italian and Spanish, and was finishing up with German. Finishing up meant that he now had the level of a Native, and all he had to do was learn the slang that was more commonly used. However, he would have no problem conducting a deal. 
As with all languages, he had minimized the accent by listening to genuine natives speak the language and simply working to learn how to mimic their accent. This allowed him to have a seamless accent, which would not separate him from any native. After he finished up with German, he would move on to Mandarin, then to Japanese and Korean. He would finish with Arabic. Once he did that, he wanted to keep learning languages, but whatever else caught his fancy would take precedence.
This way, he could maximise his ability to learn, while also motivating himself with something that would be truly fun. Especially considering his trip to Vienna, his German would be useful there, and meeting people from around the world would mean he could 'practise' speaking the languages he had learnt.

After getting dressed, Ace got in the car that took him to Sophie's house, she had said to meet him at 10, which had left him a lot of time to do his own thing, considering he had woken up at 5 in the morning, and she lived only 10 minutes away. When he got there, it was 9:55, and he was led through the main house to a 'small' one in the garden, it was an expanse where it seemed that the family met their guests, it was a massive open space, with decor tastefully placed around the room. It did not give out a sense of opulence, but you knew the people that owned it were rich nevertheless. How rich, depended on how much you looked, one could spot the luxurious billiards table or the massive 8k televisions displayed around the room. Ace, however, noticed the book stand, It was not as big or noticeable as the other pieces, but was sure as hell worth a lot more. Every book there, seemed to be expensive, Ace assumed that none of them had actually been read, but the rare collection caught his eye nevertheless.
"Like them?", Sophie came up from behind him, giving him a hug which he turned around and reciprocated. She was dressed in a yellow flowery dress that suited her quite well.
"Yeah. These are amazing, some of these are worth more than what people make in a lifetime.", Ace heard the tinge of admiration in his own voice, but did not mind it. If anything, it would only give Sophie the false impression that she could use these books as a bargaining chip. She could of course, but if Ace wanted, he could get his Grandmother to gift him an even greater collection than this. Money was not a problem, and as of right now, connections were not either.
"Hmmm, well, the others are not here yet, but I can give you a tour if you want", 'fashionably' late, of course, Ace detested such a construct, but he understood that it was merely a way for someone to feel wanted.
"Sure let's go."

Fatigue took over the boy, and he laid down on his side to get some rest. As he expected, the bed was warm and luxurious, and the freshly washed sheets and the soft mattress provided him with a comfort he had never even dreamed of. He could hear the distant laughter of the other children playing outside, and the afternoon sunlight drifted in through the window, shining over the boy. The added warmth caused a sudden sadness to wash over him, and before realizing it, he began to cry.

"Mom…" he sobbed quietly. His mother, who had always protected him, was gone, and he was alone in the world. Not only that, but the world itself had rejected him and sent him to a foreign place. The overwhelming sense of desolation left the boy clueless, unsure of what to do.

Winter was fast approaching. As soon as the trees shed their leaves, showing their barren branches, the institute was in a frenzy over getting the place cleaned up. They had to prepare for the winter season before the weather turned any colder, and as such, even more volunteers came to help than usual. The older children, generally those who had received middle school education or higher, were cleaning up alongside the volunteers.
However, not everyone was involved in the ruckus. Those who were too young to help were exempt from cleaning duty, and they were happily running along the corridors, laughing merrily. Some of these children were busy persuading the others to join them outside to play soccer, cold weather be damned. And there were those who didn't belong to either of these groups, choosing instead to move independently.

"Let's go outside. Isn't it boring in here?" Myeong-su asked in an almost pleading way, though the boy showed no sign of moving. "How can you study? It's so loud. They said we need to move around after eating, so come on. Please?"
"I have to finish all this."

The boy's curt refusal upset Myeong-su, who then made his way behind the boy, pleading once again from right behind his back. "Hey, let's go. We can't lose to Cheol-yong hyung*. You're the only one who can win against him."
This time, the boy didn't even give an answer and remained in his seat, completely focused on his writing. He had already used up half of his pencil, yet he continued to write out one Korean character at a time, almost with too much force.

Though it hadn't been long since his arrival, the boy had gotten over his initial sadness and despair and had started to get used to the institute. Even the bafflement he had felt seeing new objects and products of this civilization had faded into his memory. During this time, he had taken an interest in 'learning.' While he was surprised that anyone could learn, as it had been a privilege only granted to aristocrats in his world, what interested him most was the field of 'academic education.' The fact that anyone who wished to could study and acquire knowledge was an astonishment, and learning characters and being able to read were an enjoyment. He had been illiterate even before, so the fact that the alphabet was different didn't hinder him in the slightest. The act of learning characters itself filled the boy with delight, and while he studied, he could forget about his sadness and other memories and really concentrate. This wasn't the only change to occur while the boy adapted to his new environment. He had gotten close enough to his roommate, Myeong-su, to speak comfortably and play with him, and though it was only pertaining to one-on-one conversations, he was also able to talk to the teachers at the institute. It was with their help that the boy begun his study of the language.

"Oh my, you're rather bright." The teachers would say, admiring his progress. "You've memorized all this already?" They frequently expressed their surprise at the boy's intelligence when they taught him. He learned a lot and he learned it quickly, to the point that they wondered whether he was a genius. Though it wasn't uncommon for children to learn the Korean alphabet before entering elementary school, the teachers were certain that the boy's learning speed was much faster when compared to that of others. He was also very diligent. Children of his age had difficulty maintaining their focus, but the boy's concentration surpassed that of even adults, and he had now reached the point where he could read almost any book available to him.

His talents, however, went beyond study. Once time, after lunch, Myeong-su had taken the boy to play soccer, much to the dismay of the boy himself. Though they called it soccer, it was just a simple game of kicking the ball into a designated goal post, without any rules or regulations. With the boy's physical strength and stamina, acquired through roaming the forest from a young age, far surpassed those of the other children, and as such, Myeong-su's team had been able to win against the older Cheol-yong's team despite the two-year difference in age. From that day on, Myeong-su often tried to get the boy to join his team, and at his desperate requests, the boy sometimes agreed and played along with him. Thanks to this, the boy got along with the other children to an extent, but as his passion lay with studying rather than kicking balls around in the field, Myeong-su had to go out by himself, leaving the room with a heavy sigh.

Today, as usual, the boy was alone in his room, practicing on his writing and reading books, when he suddenly felt a presence behind him. He turned around and saw a girl, perhaps around ten years of age, with a pristine smile on her face. "Oh," she said, "you were studying. Did I disturb you?" The boy shook his head as he watched her. She had pale, white skin, matching her pristine smile, and thin eyebrows. Her smile reached her eyes, making them appear almost drooping. She opened her pink lips and spoke again. "You're a handsome one, aren't you? How are you so pretty? What's your name?" The boy fidgeted around, hesitant to answer.

A few days ago, the boy had been summoned to the chairman's office. The older man had offered him a white mug full of the same juice as before and sat down heavily on the sofa in front of the boy, who couldn't help but worry that the chair might break. For one fleeting moment, the boy even went as far as to imagine himself getting stuck under the chairman's protruding stomach. 
"Well," began the chairman, interrupting the boy's imagination. "I heard you've been working hard on your studies. I really was quite worried, did you know? That you'd have a hard time here, too. But seeing you now, I think I can relax a little. Is studying fun?"
"Yes, sir."

The boy was now aware that gulping down his juice as he had done before could be considered lacking in manners, and as such, he simply sat there, looking back and forth between the cup and the chairman, not daring to take even a single sip. The chairman found this to be very cute and, with a boisterous laugh, gestured for the boy to drink with a twitch of his fingers. Accepting this as permission to drink the juice he was given, the boy took the cup in his hands and drank slowly, one sip at a time, as the chairman continued talking. "Next year, you'll have to be enrolled into a school. But before that, there are a few things you need, once of which is a name. We need to know your name to fill out all the paperwork needed to get you into school. Do you understand what this means?"
"…Yes, sir."
"Good. So what is your name?"
"Um…My name…"

Seeing that the boy still had difficulty disclosing his name, the chairman formed a few hypotheses about the boy's past and carefully offered a second option.
"Well then, how about I give you a new name?"

Startled, the boy just stared at the chairman. What did he mean by a new name?
"What I'm trying to say is that…If it's hard for you to use your old name, giving you a new name is also a possibility. This means you'll have to use your new name from now on, of course."
"A…new name…"
"You need one to go to school and continue the studies you love so much. By now, I'm sure you know as much, right?"

The boy couldn't bring himself to speak. He had never even imagined getting a new name. Truth be told, the reason he couldn't say anything when asked about his name was largely due to the impact his dream had had on him. His father's words, telling him to remember his name, became engraved in him, acting as a seal. The awkwardness and hesitance the boy had displayed as a result of this had only contributed to the adults' misunderstanding of him. But now, he hesitated to say his name for an entirely different reason: he had figured out that his name did not follow the common naming system of this world. He was afraid that revealing this information would force him into a situation that he could not handle alone. This was why he had struggled so long to say his name. And yet…
