Today, I have decided to help some people consider whether a fanfic they intend to write will be receptive by its target audience.

In essence, its quite simple you have to extract the core values that made the Canon version as popular as it is.

Let's look at a few examples shall we?

Highschool DxD

The only thing that sets highschool dxd apart from other Harem Anime is the concept of the Devil's Evil Pieces based peerage system.

It's essentially playing pokemon with women with a limit to how many you can officially catch to then battle alongside with in the rating games, the equivalent to a pokemon tournament. 

This goes paired with ever increasingly dire threats to the world to combat, not unlike we all saw occur in Dragon Ball Z. 

Thats it. The only thing that sets DxD apart from DBZ, Naruto and Bleach with is the Peerage System, Team Combat Tournament. 

Likewise the only thing that sets it apart from Harem anime is the typical shounen slugfest and this team combat system. 

With this Highschool DxD scored its own niche. Which is why I am not surprised when I look at the popularity statistics and notice people tend to be more enthusiastic about DxD fanfics where the Si, Oc or Reincarned has his own evil piece set.

This is because this is the main reason for the success of DxD. Meaning that unless you go this route. You're likely to alienate a lot of readers.

The same counts for the USP, Unique Selling Point of other IPs.

Let's look at some more.

Naruto

The main appeal of the Naruto verse is Chakra based Super Powers, Bloodlines and Combat.

You will notice that the fillers and shippuuden took a huge hit to the view count untill combat one again resumed.

This is because the fillers werent true to the USPs that made Naruto popular, and Shippuuden drew everything out so much with its flash backs that it had a simular reception. In essence it changed from Naruto to a poor DBZ clone and Boruto then took on the format of the fillers. 

That is not to say that there are no amazing characters or things to be found in these later stages. Just that opportunities and viewers were lost by people no longer feeling the same attraction to the anime they did in earlier stages. 

It is the same reason why concepts like being in Naruto without chakra, being a non ninja in naruto, highschool AU varients with its characters and blind Uchiha / Hyuuga fics tend to have a significantly smaller audience. 

Its because these fics remove part if not all of the USP of the Naruto verse or its USP's

Its also why fics like Dreaming of Sunshine by Silverqueen on Fanfiction got such a huge following when they stayed true to the USPs that made the Narutoverse popular, whilst becoming original enough that it encroaches upon an original story. 

Something The next example will show, is a mighty difficult thing to do and a very intensive decision to make.

Harry Potter

Many of you know that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them was significantly less popular than the Harry Potter series. 

So what are the USPs of Harry Potter that make ot unique? 

Truth be told, it doesn't have any that make it truly unique. Its the way in which they are combined. 

Magic School, Adventure, Mysteries, Teen Angst, Absurd logic, Small technical varied magics based in skill rather than slug fests and an ever escalating yearly problem of a different variety resultant of the gradual return of the series main antogonist. 

It is for this reason why everyone sticks to hogwarts and Harry Potter timeline centric fics are most popular.

That is not to say that a fic taking place in any of the other magic schools couldn't be as successful, its just much harder to write because for all intends and purposes it would be a completely new story that if you change some naming conventions could be published as your own kind of thing that Rowling owned copyright has no rights to. 

And thats the problem. If you stay true to the Harry Potter USPs but want to switch it up, you will have to come up with your own storyline, yearly mysteries, adventures and issues. You own characters, teen angst. Its a completely diffrent level of writing and takes an effort significantly larger than a fanfic, a non paid story is worth. 

Yet there are anime inspired by this, who slightly altered the USP, such as Irregular at Magic Highschool, Negima, and a whole slew of others rolling with the magic school shtick.

So looking at al these examples combined. What have we learned? 

- If we want the same target audience as the original works, we need to stay true to its USPs

- if we want to keep the audience, we need to be original. 

- If we become too original, then it might be better to self publish rather than making it a freebie fanfic.

In my opinion, the latter point is worth it if you do not want to be an official author, but simply do this for fun and to relax.

I do not know silverqueen's circumstances or decision making behind why she did so much original content, but it worked and in doing so made her fanfic one of the most memorable Naruto fics of all time.

There are many fanfics out there who set a high bar among the fanfica of the IPs theyre written for but to me, the memorable ones always understood very well what the USPs were and created just enough original content to feel like a unique story without making it so original that its an actual waste not to self publish.

I often found such stories back on fanfiction's golden age by searching on review counts. Its how I found for example the iconic harry potter fanfiction Harry Crow. 

On Webnovel, I find this much harder to do because there is no way to search on review counts or even word count to my knowledge and authors for some reason, even if successful tend to remove their fanfics after some time.

To me thats a bit frustrating, I love how accessible webnovel is as a fanfic READER, even tough I understand what a nightmare it is for an author due to the diffrence in formatting required.

In addition, here on webnovel, you can write the shittiest fic and have the most traction because of the increased marketing options as a skilled craftsman in my own field and an absolute disaster in marketing, i understand very well what pro's and cons either site and their user base's behavioural patterns have for various authors. 

Still, the universal truth of what makes the best fanfics is not limited to the platform your on but in my opinion, its how well you balance your own original content with the preservation of the core Unique Selling Points (USPs) of the Intellectual Product (IPs).

Thoughts and Idea's with regards to fanfictions, builds for characters, weapons and more.

I'm not an author, my interests in a concept don't last long enough to write it and I am admittedly not the strongest in writing a decent dialog.

I'm someone who is Hyper Aware of a lot of things, and one of them is if something severely lacks. Whilst I can do art Inspite of that, I just can't bring myself to write dialog that doesn't feel perfectly natural.

That said, I do often write drafts for stories, sometimes I even manage a chapter worth of dialog that any author would be proud to own, but when it's about the baseline that I achieve for my dialogs, then I prefer not to publish.

However, I do have ideas, so many ideas and thoughts on things that I feel the need to express them. Hopefully, they will be of help for authors, who are feeling stuck or unsure how to develop their story, or want to write one but are unsure about what to write.

So, long story short. What follows are drafts for fics and stories. Ideas on how to build a convincingly strong character without needing all those rediculously overpowered bloodlines and abilities.

Ideas on how to develop abilities and exploit them, that you might not have thought to try.

Because let's face it, a creative mind can make even the simplest of abilities into a versatile master piece.

All of those things, you will find here, sooner or later. So have fun, be inspired or horrified at what you read. ;p

While i like watching anime the most but the like reading the light novels, web novels, manga as well. I like different types of animes, like One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, God of Highschool, Fate Series and last but not least Highschool DxD. I often dream of becoming a strong and capable person in one of these anime from the start and help those poor protagonists in their weak time. Hmm, now that i think about it i guess i have a Chunibyo Syndrome ???
Well, it depends on how you look at it. I'm not the type to dye my hair, but sometimes I cosplay myself in to a magician and say things like <Abracadabra> or <Fire Style : Great Fireball Jutsu> heh, but not in public though.
Out of all those anime I love Highschool DxD and Fate Series the most especially, Fate Grand Order. I've read upto volume 22 of the light novel Highschool DxD and animes of Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Zero. I only played FGO in my mobile but never completed watching its anime series. The only regret i have is that i wasn't able to complete my collection of it.
Why is that ?, well since I am dead!!.
Now you may be asking yourself: If you're dead, how are you telling this?
Well, I'd say its not easy to explain, but its actually quite simple.
When i left for the store for buying the new DxD volume, I saw a little girl with headphones on crossing the street. To my horror, she was about to be hit by a speeding truck.
I don't know where i got the strength and courage, but i managed to save her at the cost of my own life, of course. With a smile hanging on my lips for able to save someone i depart for my afterlife.
Or was what i thought but now i find myself in a great hall surrounded what appear to be"Gods". In the center of the room was the same girl for whom I had lost my life moments before. She was leaning towards me.
"So, have I died for nothing?"
This "Goddess" is nodding her head incessantly.
"Sigh, raise your head."

"Please forgive me."
It doesn't look like she will raise her head until i forgive her. Sigh i just wanted to read my new novel and watch the last 7 episodes of Fate Grand Order...

Karma i understand i have read about it in the Buddhist Scripts i used to listen and read. To think my Bad Karma got erased completely because of actions, its feels good for some reason heh!. But why the hell is she talking to herself?
I looked at the other Gods. Can't you guys do something?
Wait, why are looking away? What about your guilty looks?
"From what I've seen before, you like to watch a lot of animes but your favourite is the world of DxD and Fate Series. Mmm... I know!"
Aah, this stupid Goddess, she keeps thinking out loud she looks mature if you look at her from outside, but inside her brain there are few screw looses. Hm Hm!!.
"Well, listen to me mortal. I've decided to give two choices either I make you a Low Tier God and help me rule the multiverse or to reincarnate as a newborn in one of the two worlds you like the most, DxD or Fate Series. Choose Carefully."
Huh? Can i become a God? It sounds good but... why are the faces of all the other gods blue? I can guess it vaguely it seems they were like me once and chose to become a God and now they are suffering for some reason. If so....
"I want to be reborn in DxD world even though Fate Series is good and all I don't think i can survive there and enjoy my life".
The Goddess nodded, "I expected it and i will grant your wish. Since you didnt want to become a God then i will you five wishes, you can ask me anything you want be it system, bloodline or other powers, oh by the way selecting your world doesn't count as a wish, just to remind you".
"Well i need some time to think about my wishes i hope it doesn't matter to you, Right?"
The Goddess nodded, "No trouble at all. You have all the time you need to think."
After a long while of thinking about what type of wishes i want i told the waiting Goddess about it,
"Ok my first wish is, I want to be reborn as Pure blood Devil of Phenex Family. I will be big brother of Ravel Phenex and Little Brother of Riser Phenex. My body should be an adaptable body with eidetic memory and pure Phoenix Bloodline. If you can make me Handsome it will be very appreciated."
"My second wish is, I want a custom system created which include the following contents, [Status], [Inventory], [Weapons] and [Summon] functions. In Weapons functions i want all kinds of weapons from different animes and novels included in it but able to withstand the laws of DxD world. For [Summons] i want to be able to summon Servants from Fate Grand Order. As for restrictions in it I can only Summon two Servants per year and i can only summon one servant per class after the quota for the servants gets completed it will be removed from the System functions."
"My third wish is for the Servants of Fate Series to have real bodies and they will be 100% loyal to me. After i summon my servants i can select two of their skills to become my own skills permanently, though it will start with low rank of the same skill that i select so i can master it myself. The Servants will be Immortal even if they will have real bodies but they can be killed as well."
"My Fourth wish is for me to have Arc of Embodiment with Superior Magic Talent similar to Great Red or other strong beings who are adept in using magic. Please keep a restriction on it so that i could increase my magic capacity even greater than before when i keep on increasing strength considering the standard of growth of Devils which are related to class."
"My Fifth wish is for me have a peaceful and happy life with four to five wives and a lot of strong and trustworthy friends."
"This are my wishes Goddess".
The Goddess nodded and said, "All the wishes you specified can be granted. You have put some restrictions on yourself for the sake of the laws of that world as well as to not be too OP. Hah i like that fifth wish, i know what you suffered in your entire life, i have seen it, i will make sure you will get good wives and friends in your next life you will be starting from now. Now for your first wish some changes will be needed to be done in the Phenex family there and as for the pure Phoenix Bloodline i will give you the Primordial Dark Phoenix Bloodline which is even more powerful as well as destructive then the original Phoenix Bloodline. It will automatically increase the purity of your bloodline when you are born in Phenex family. Oh it will be a painless procedure since you already will have a lesser Bloodline of Pheonix, it will only cause some itches and some grime to be released from your body thats all. Now its time to send you off leave your life happily in your next life, This Goddess blesses you!!."
"Thank You Goddess even though you talk to yourself too much you are a good person at heart."
