But why do humans need self control?
Well, according to most humans, self control is needed to produce desirable results and to achieve goals.
And what is the goal?
To be happy...
To reach optimal happiness, humans should indulge themselves in drugs, but that strips away a sense of self control which is needed to produce optimal happiness.
Quite contradictory, isn't it?
Well, the second conclusion is that using drugs or "artificial happiness" is not as gratifying as living life happily.
But how does that work?
Well, the happiness is even greater after putting in the effort.
But what about the time spent working to the goal?
Was that a happy time?
Can't using drugs make you happy all the time?
Wouldn't that be better than to live short moments of happiness after achieving a goal?

There has always been this side of me that runs away from anything that makes me unhappy. I even spent my years using mental tricks like 'eating chocolate makes me happy' to get over sadness.

However, was what I did a good thing?

I avoided sadness, yet one day I had no choice but to come face to face with it without mental tricks.

When that happened, I wasn't ready at all... My lack of internalising all the hate and depression for so long made me forget how to do it. How is one supposed to be happy? How do you define it?

I tried defining my happiness, and found comedic videos as a result. However, how's a comedic video any different from anti-depressants? Where is that happiness that stays with me much longer?

The thing is that... No one can tell what truly makes them happy unless they lose it, causing them sadness... Then what are we supposed to do, check what makes us happy by making ourselves despair?

No, that is stupid decision. That is self-mutilation of the heart. You won't find happiness by seeking it.

You can find laughter, but you won't find happiness.

Absurd, isn't it?

You have only one choice. Accept your sadness along with your happiness. Or else you'll suffer?

Sadness, like happiness, is an intangible thing.

You may not know this, but despair also wants to be loved the same way you care for your happiness.

After all, without your sadness, how would you know that something was precious to you?

How would you know of loss? How would you know of guilt? How would you be motivated to change?

Without sadness, the world would be too blinding until it reaches the point of emptiness. You will grow tired of happiness if you can't contrast this emotion with sadness. Long live the era of negativity.

This is a story I worked on ages ago that has been refined and edited by adding foreshadowing to events while also simplifying the power system better than before. This story can be considered a prequel to An Adventure Beyond Greatness as it takes place years prior to the events of that story.

Short Synopsis:
After retiring from the battlefield, my life became empty and lifeless. The regrets of my past haunt me in my sleep. Then a change occurred, a King from another world summoned me to fight for his kingdom, but I died even before I could give him my answer. Now, after a fake God allowed me to reincarnate (albeit imperfectly) with my memories intact, into a world filled with magic and swords.

Long Synopsis:
This is about a flawed protagonist who only knew to rely on others and not socialise who gets a second chance to change himself in order to live the life he aimed for in his past life. The narrator isn’t exactly trustworthy since it is purely in his bias perspective while other perspectives given by others fill in the blanks that he either leaves out or twists to suit the situation.

The story itself can be considered a parody of Isekai’s classic tropes which are given a sense of reality as time goes by. As there exists no ‘Demon Lord’, there is also no black and white, only characters opinions and counter-opinions throughout the story.

My name is Derrick Vogel, the sole successor of Royal Throne Corporation in Luxembourg. The first company which boasted to have trillions worth of assets. Yes, I am the son of the CEO who dominated the world's industries. It is fate that gave me such a blissful life, the life dreamt by billions of people.
I have millions of subordinates under me and my father. I can do anything, I can do whatever I like. Even life can easily be taken in just a word of my mouth. But this kind of hobby is boring, what I want is to be happy.
I can buy anything I like. What catches my eyes will be bought by me. People always give me face whenever I buy stuff and even fawn at me, but being condenscending while buying what I like is what I don't do. I still have my own principles.

I thought for answers. I asked my trusted aide, my trusted confidants and my circle of friends, what is happiness? All I get are different answers that didn't make sense to me. 
My friends would laugh at my ridiculous saying. "Who even needs happiness? We have money!"
 My trusted confidants and aide gave me different answers, they were too profound to understand, talking about their wives and kids. 
Leaving me no choice, I asked my mother. She knows this stuff better than my father does. I asked her on the phone since it's impossible for us to meet in these times.
The answer surprised me though. She said. "Follow the footsteps of those people you envy, and you will find the answer you will need."
In a flash of inspiration, I managed to find what goal I should set. And to find this answer, I disguised myself and hired the best, trustworthy guards, as I journeyed from one country to another. 
There is one path I can take while finding the answer, it is to live as a poor person, and to interact with poor people.
I traveled from Luxembourg to a developing country in Asia to live for a month in order to find the answers I'm looking for.
 Then I filtered places to places as I pointed my fingers in the world map where I would live for some time.
I froze my bank account so I won't be able to cheat myself in the name of money. I have to force myself to adopt this lifestyle whether I like it or not, all for the sake of the goal. Everything will be worth it if I can endure this little bit of hardship.
 Thus, I rented a room of the worst apartment I can find near an area where countless people would flock, the park.
I always prioritize my safety over my needs, thus I made sure that there are no dirty and hidden backgrounds around and inside this city that will affect me.
My honest thoughts of the apartment I will be living from now on? I can see dust all around me, so dirty. below the cabinet is dirty, the borders of the air conditioner is dirty, even the floor is dirty. As expected of the worst apartment I can find. 
Now what should I do? There are people living in this apartment just next to my door. Maybe I'll try visiting them.
I once had the thought of calling the landlord downstairs to hire people and make them clean my room, but that would make the whole thing meaningless right? I want to find my answers myself, not to hire people to find the answers for me.
I have no problems talking with other people; may they be poor, rich, with racial differences, or cultural differences, anything. Discrimination is already wiped off my head long ago. I learned this the hard way.
As I knocked to the door that was next to mine, I already heard some feminine voice shouting. "Please wait." As I heard this, I can already tell the difference that the natives here are easier to talk to than the people I deal with in business.
I waited for ten seconds, for the door to be opened, what greets my eyes is a native aunty, I'm half a head taller than her. 
The aunty asked. "How may I help you, boy?"
Its the first time someone calling me with an honorific, "boy". Even though I am 16, no one ever dared to call me that. It may be disrespectful in business but not in here, especially in terms of seniority, I am really a kid, a boy compared to her. I always take note of these matters.

Time proved to be in humane and Ava was the root that seem to be the queen. Her world was empty, dark and cold, she was alone and scared but knew what she had to do. Ava has to escape the demise that she put herself in, she had to live the world she knew and return to reality. Ava does not know how to escape, she does not know how to live without the ones that protected her, she was lost. Ava was the root that guarded her own self destruction and she felt that the odds was against her. It was time for her to walk that path, to release what was hurting her and get out of the demise but everytime she tried, she would fail and horribly. Ava knew that no matter how strong her will was, the emptiness and darkness consumed her and she was the queen of the damned. Ava was lost in her world and needed guidance but it was gone. The world she lived in was dark, cold, empty, barely seen, there was no happiness only sadness lived there. Pain was given and pleasure and happiness was taken. She lived a lonely life and could not adjust to her surroundings. Ava believed in god and lived everything with breath but it seemed that the prison she lived in was more powerful than her. As time passed on, Ava realized that the only way out was to push through what was hurting her and try to remember the happiness, calmness, and joy she once knew.
