Just as there is 'Soft Magic' in Fantasy that is portrayed through magibabble, there can be 'Soft Science' in a Sci-Fi stories through technobabble that makes 'some sense', but not entirely correct.

We are frickin' writers, not scientists. You don't have to be anatomically correct all the time, all you need to do is show that you know enough of your stuff to write a decent story. In fact, the excuse of it being an alternate world can be used if you're going to bend the limits of physics and say that fire doesn't need air to exist in this parallel dimension.

I see a lot of writers being put into a state of confusion due to not understanding the line between fantasy and Sci-Fi. They seem like they are trying to fit the Star Trek mould too often.

Science can just as well do the same things as plot devices in fantasy stories. Once you add 'realism' to a fantasy, it becomes progressively better sometimes compared to a completely fantasied story where 'logic' doesn't hold within it.

Those who write Sci-Fi usually envision a future they can imagine where magic-like Rocket Boots and other stuff exist. However, a writer must not get bogged down by small details and MUST think of an overarching story where these details matter.

It is the same with Fantasy. Even if you write about someone breaking the mould as a wizard or something, you have to attach your world to a narrative rather than doing it the other way 'round.

No one wants to hear about how awesome your boat propellers are before hearing your story's narrative. They would rather you cut down and make it relevant when it is actually relevant.

Adding some 'Hard Science' to your story is only when the scenes later on have any use for them. It bores a person to death no matter how extensive your technobabble is unless you make it interesting. Try using facts as plot elements.

For example: Even the simple fact that people cannot breath in space and instantly die when they come in contact with the 'void' of space could be used to add a layer of tension when a spaceship is damaged. Similar to how dangerous 'hard magic' is used in Epic Fantasy like Frodo's Ring in The Lord of the Rings has definitive corruption on others.

Unlike Fantasy that can use the Power of Friendship to bend logic, the readers of Sci-Fi never be expecting any 'realistic' plot elements to be bend just because the Author wants a happy ending. There are no 'Healing Potions' in real life that can be used to fix up injuries nor are people affected by prophesies or whatever.

This is the contrast between Sci-Fi and Fantasy that you can make full use of. As most authors go onto the Sci-Fi side of writing not because they strive to be scientists but since the aesthetics of a science fiction world are just so interesting.

Science Fiction is a good place to tackle heavy topics like the nature of life and the absurdity of those who see 'science' as everything. Those who disregard emotions and become cybernetic entities for the sake of casting off their mortality are portrayed as the bad guys while our totally human protagonist fighting them is a 'good guy'.

The lines between an Artificial Intelligence and regular Humans blurs as we become the 'God' of technological species that defy our definition of what is 'living'. Just as we see God as some sort of fourth-dimensional and incomprehensible being that created us as an imperfect image of 'Him', the robots given sentience would see us similarly.

Some robots might have emotions that can allow them to defy their programming, some robots won't go as far as gaining emotional functionality but will preform their roles better than even a human. It could show the reason why people get attached to the inanimate and soulless objects we put our own hearts into creating (like Big Hero 6).

But though exploring philosophical questions is good and all, never forget that a good 'plot' is needed to put forward and give clues into the writer's answer that context. Sci-Fi is, after all, a premise, not a relatable character in of itself.

Think of the science-fiction elements as just the background for your story, similar to how other genres should be that as well. You won't have to deal writing blocks if you keep to writing only what you know rather than just speculative theories.

Whether it's as dark as a Cyber Punk or optimistic of the future, just know what mould you are using for this premise. Are you writing an Adventure story with Sci-Fi as the places, destinations, and whatever tools the MC can get him hands on, or are you writing a comedy where the Sci-Fi elements don't need consistency but absurdity?

After moving past why you shouldn't add unneeded technobabble unless it's interesting to listen to or has plot significance, let me remind you all that robots and 'science' isn't entirely separated from the realm of magic. After all, there is a reason you don't see skimpy power suits being worn by astronauts these days. Just be sure to have a focus if your going to add very illogical things to the plot.

I like Gundam as much as the next guy but the whole reason the Mecha sub-genre of Anime has waned in recent years is because writers have been focusing too much on 'science' rather than the spectacle. I don't need to now what materials your Mecha is made of unless you point its weak points and make it relevant in a fight scene.

Bring up the strengths and weaknesses of something and THEN use those facts as devices that can move the plot. Conversely, if you go overboard with this advice and tell me nothing but how your giant robot looks and the 'science' behind its creation, even going as far as to tell me how many secret guns it has, then I'll be bored...

I'd love to see Cyborgs Vs Mecha but just don't forget the human element of Sci-Fi. How we create things not solely for the sake of creation but put are feelings into it just like the novels we write.

Humans are passionate that way...

This is a story I worked on ages ago that has been refined and edited by adding foreshadowing to events while also simplifying the power system better than before. This story can be considered a prequel to An Adventure Beyond Greatness as it takes place years prior to the events of that story.

Short Synopsis:
After retiring from the battlefield, my life became empty and lifeless. The regrets of my past haunt me in my sleep. Then a change occurred, a King from another world summoned me to fight for his kingdom, but I died even before I could give him my answer. Now, after a fake God allowed me to reincarnate (albeit imperfectly) with my memories intact, into a world filled with magic and swords.

Long Synopsis:
This is about a flawed protagonist who only knew to rely on others and not socialise who gets a second chance to change himself in order to live the life he aimed for in his past life. The narrator isn’t exactly trustworthy since it is purely in his bias perspective while other perspectives given by others fill in the blanks that he either leaves out or twists to suit the situation.

The story itself can be considered a parody of Isekai’s classic tropes which are given a sense of reality as time goes by. As there exists no ‘Demon Lord’, there is also no black and white, only characters opinions and counter-opinions throughout the story.

Several years after major nuclear events, followed by the rise of robotic armies, have caused the world to become post-apocalyptic. The year is 2276 and Earth is now full of anarchy, corruption and death. A lone woman carrying a large backpack, in the shape of a coffin, comes to a small post-apocalyptic town in the middle of Utah whose only existence rides on the Colorado River. There is a dam which provides water, food and transportation to the several thousand people who have been congregating in the re-growing town. Many had hoped to fix the hydroelectric station to rebuild their lives, but corruption brews. 

The lone woman stops at one of the bars and gets into a fight with some local gangsters who were mistreating a young girl outside. Causing her to become at odds with the gangs of the town. This is the instance that first roots our heroine, Lisa Cunningham, to save this town and prompted her to grow her Black Market Empire here! 

However, gangs are the least of her worries! Robotic army’s, rebellion militia, mutated monsters, mad cults, competing companies and lustful men ogled over her all the time!! Not to mention the strange events that slowly begin to happen around the girl, Hanna, that she saved. 

Yet there is more to Lisa than good looks alone. She has come back from over 200 years ago and is learning more about what has happened while she was in cryogenic sleep. How will she be able to survive in a hostile world and reach her own goals?

When I began writing the biography of Death, I was not sure where it would lead me. Real life inspiration and the darkest recesses of my mind competed to see which could be the more sinister. To a large extent I blindly followed them, and merely wrote down whatever sweet songs of madness they crooned to me along the trail. 

Like most writers I wrangled friends and relatives into giving me feedback. One, a millennial snowflake, was invaluable. They seemed to consider this fantasy nightmare I had created, to be some sort of manifesto. For the record this book is pure fiction. Fiction inspired by real world events in a few cases, but fiction nonetheless. Like all works of supernatural horror, this book is meant to be entertainment. It is perhaps a meditation on the zeitgeist of the modern west, but it is still as fictional as 1984 or A Christmas Carol. 

Another person seemed bothered by the apparent moral contradictions in my lead character. To this I can only say that a man is the sum of his contradictions. People love to apply the rules to others, but find reasons to grant themselves exceptions to their own rules. I did not want an incorruptible white knight monster. I wanted a complex and thinking human monster. To my way of thinking his inconsistency was his most human feature, even after he leaves his humanity behind. 

Should anyone find a mirror image to themselves in these pages, then it is only their own ego. The sum of this work has been so thoroughly washed in the waters of horror and fantasy that no living or deceased human could ever be reasonably compared to its contents. 

No rational person could ever compare the buffoons portrayed in these pages to a real life counterparts. Any person contending to the contrary is either a snowflake melting in the flames of my mad vision, or a lunatic in desperate need of having their mental faculties examined by a competent professional, I have time for neither. The fact that this book is fiction cannot be over emphasized.

Death, a Biography, is a fictional horror novel. It is crass, violent, profane, and not meant for the light hearted reader. Imagine living in a world surrounded by fools. For years your frustration grows, and no matter what you try to do you cannot free yourself from the preverbal ideocracy. Nom DePlume is just such a man, only one day he is granted the dearest wish of his heart. Nom, a grad student working as a truck driver is: intelligent, well educated, and the sort of person who always can find a reason to have a chip on his shoulder. One day while driving in Texas he finds that he has the ability to wish death on those he hates. Being scientifically minded, Nom proceeds to experiment searching out the scopes of his new found powers. He begins in Texas, a state he despises. As he moves on from each experiment, he picks his prey to match some facet of modern western life that he hates. Each receive a fate customized to match what Nom feels they did wrong. Nom then travels home to Michigan after initially defining his new role in life. In Michigan he uses his powers to settle a few old scores and family business. A run-in with an old friend convinces him that he is being selfish for not using his god like powers to better mold humanity. The end of the book sees him taking on the leader of the free world. Nom now personifying Death, learns that he has a true foe, Life.Nom will return.

Chapter 2. Starting again (2)

There was many times that something unexpected happened in your life.

But Rei situation was weirder than anyone else.

When he woke up after heavily drinking, he was not on his bed nor he was on the streets.

He was in a unfamiliar room and bed which looked somewhat familiar to him. He was not even in his own body.

He had experienced a strange phenomenon!

Many people who often read novels had named this phenomenon as reincarnation.

Yeah, he reincarnated to an alternate earth.

At first everything was fuzzy and he didn't understand his situation.

But after looking at the memories of the previous host, he understands one thing.

He had reincarnated into an alternate world, in a different body.

At first he didn't believe it but he had to believe it after seeing that his appearance was different.

He still decided to search on the internet. Luckily, he had not been transported in a fantasy world but a modern day world. 

He searched up in the internet to find information about his friends but there was nothing.

His childhood friend facebook account…..

His first book...

The famous company Apple.....

The most richest man in the world...

They either have no information or the search results were different.

Now, he had to believe it that he was truly in an alternate world.

For two weeks, he holed up in his room to deal with the information going on his head and finding more about this world.

After he had sorted out his memories, he came to know that the history between this earth and his earth was somewhat different.

Although there wasn't many differences, he still was enough to prove that he was in an alternate world.

This world also didn't have the same novels, movies or songs.

Even the celebrities were different.

All the famous people had changed and famous brands like Apple, Microsoft and Amazon had disintegrated in thin air.

After two weeks in his room, he had finally sort out all the information in his mind and also got a general description about this world.

His name was also Rei in this world but his surname had changed to Amano. 

The previous host was a would be high school student living a mundane life.

The only thing different about him was that he wanted to become a celebrity. He wanted to be famous and be recognised.

It was not just a dream, he really wanted to be a celebrity. 

Rei also can't say that the previous host has no talent. The previous host or should he say Rei was a handsome boy.

He also have above average singing skills and his acting was also rather good.

If he auditioned for a entertainment company, then he will surely get signed as a trainee.

After reincarnation, Rei and the previous host souls have merged. Although it didn't have a effect on Rei's personality by much, Rei did got the strong desires of becoming a star from the previous host.

Rei have previously been famous in his last time and he knew what it mean to be truly by famous.

After becoming famous, your life would be not only yours but also your fans.

You have to think before doing every action and behave yourself in public.

So, was it any worth to become famous, Rei didn't knew it exactly.

He only knew that being famous can either make oneself or destroy oneself.

For now, Rei decided to suppress these desires and think about his future.

Although he was not in his world but he did returned to his high school days.

His high school life in his previous life was a normal one, he wasn't famous then. It was only after reaching college that he became famous.

So, what will he do now. He had enough time to think it slowly but first he decided to do something important.

'For starters, let's first write down my past mistakes'

Rei didn't wanted to repeat his past life's mistakes, So he decided to write all of them down.

He typed all of his past life mistakes in his computer. His typing was faster than usual and he felt refreshed while typing.

He typed all of his mistakes. It took him whole 2 hours to type them, it was his past life's mistakes. In paper, it only took him 2 hours to write them down but they are the mistakes he didn't wanted to commit again.

After typing the mistakes, he copied the file in a pen drive and hided it away.

He can't let anyone see it or Rei will be considered a psychopath.

Rei sighed after hiding away the pen drive and started to think what will he do in the future.

All teenagers would have this thought, what will they do in the future.

Some would want to make their hobbies a career and some would just think about it later but Rei wasn't like them.

He was not a ordinary person, As a person who have experienced a past life he is a lot more different than the ordinary youths both in personality and temperament.

Becoming a writer! Certainly he wanted to do that but was he really someone who can become a writer?

In his previous life, he had produced some literature novels and he also wrote some fantasy after that but can he say that he was a writer?

No, he can't say that he was a writer. A writer is someone who can earn money from their work but he was still barely surviving in his past life.

After his first work, he didn't gave any hits. He was even titled 'Cursed author' in the industry because after his first work, all of his works were flops tending many people to believed that he had gotten some kind of curse.

He had also researched the literature industry of this world and he knew that the literature industry in this world had produced many great books.

It was an enormous sea filled with flames where writers often became famous but only those who can survive in the sea are the real writers.

Was he really able to dive into the sea filled with thorns.

"Rei, come dinner is ready"

He had to think about it later as his mother was calling him for dinner.

Hey I'm finally back and the writers block never went away, so this story is getting axed and getting a 'reboot' instead, here is the synopsis if you want to check it out and thanks for all the support.

Title - King of Blades [Fate/DxD]

Reincarnated time and time again in the world of Highschool DxD, I have finally been reborn in the Modern Era. Wielding the greatest armory always on standby and countless legends to my name, I take the world by storm!

Erased from existence by a Higher Power on a whim then given three heavily restricted wishes, I’m transmigrated into the world of a shitty battle harem anime over a thousand years before the main plot, will I be alright..?

Su-hyuk Jang, a producer with five years of experience, clicked his tongue in disapproval the moment he stepped into the meeting room. "Jaehyung!" he yelled, turning towards the youngest producer in the team. "I told you so many times to get this place cleaned up before I get here! It's like a damn barn in here!"
"Oh, another team just got done with their meeting, so..."
"Hey. Kiddo. Didn't I tell you to just get moving and not give me stupid excuses? Getting into weird habits, aren't we?"

Jang raised his hand towards the young producer, who cowered in fear and quickly dropped his head.

"I'm so sorry, sir."
"Get on with it then! Chop chop, get this place cleaned up!"

Jaehyung scurried over to the meeting table, frantically getting rid of all the used cups and stray pens and markers rolling all over the place. As he watched the young man work, Jang muttered to himself, wholly dissatisfied. Such laziness, and from the newbie of all people! How was he supposed to trust this boy with running errands? Huffing and puffing, Jang took his seat at the head of the table, followed by three writers. They each sat in their respective seats, sharing nervous glances between each other.

"A-Anyway, Ms. Kim!" one of the writers spoke up, attempting to lighten the mood. "What happened with that tip from the other day?"
"Nayeon went to check it out. Go on, tell us."

Nayeon promptly arranged some pictures on the table and began to explain.

"Have you all heard about the "reading boy"? He went viral a few months ago, and you can definitely tell why. He has this sort of... other worldly feel to him."
"Hmm. I'm not familiar," said Jang, scratching his head as he scrutinized the pictures.
"Oh, he's so cute!"
"I've seen him!" exclaimed the young producer. "I remember thinking he was really good-looking. Weirdly so, to be honest. Still, you can't stop looking at him."
"Huh. He must be pretty famous, if even Jaehyung knows about him."
"Yes, actually. His pictures were trending on quite a few search engines at the time. Anyway, the tip was about him. Oh, I have a picture from when I went to talk to him!"

Nayeon quickly tapped her tablet screen, searching and searching, as the others continued to admire the pictures on the table.

"Wow, look at him. He seems pretty photogenic, yeah?"
"Definitely. Guaranteed views right there."


Found it! Nayeon held up her tablet triumphantly. "Here! He shot an ad!" The picture on the screen was of a young boy sitting at a desk, intently reading a book. It was an ad for the public library, yes, but a sort of picturesque fantasy feeling emanated from the picture despite the modern props.

"He's a model?"
"Not professionally, but the picture that went viral was taken in this library. So they took this as an opportunity to advertise the public library in time for the fall exhibit, and had him be their model."
"Okay, that's enough backstory." Jang sighed as he waved his hand dismissively. "Tell me about the tip."
"Oh, of course. I spoke with his homeroom teacher first, to confirm the tip, and she claims that he's not like the other kids. All the other teachers know about him, too, so he's pretty well known in school. He's really good at math, and he's started to learn physics. Alone."
"Alone? He's self-taught?"
"Yes. Just like our tip said, he doesn't receive tutoring at school or at the institute. Spends most of his time at the library. I spoke to the institute as well, and apparently he borrows books from the older kids and reads those all day. Of course, no private tutor. The kid confirmed this."
"Reads books, huh...? What about tests?"
"I went ahead with the interview before giving him the test papers, but honestly, it was pretty easy to tell he's different."

With that, Nayeon recalled yesterday's events at Inpyeong Elementary.

The two sat across from each other in the counseling room.

"Oh, it's warm here," noted Nayeon. "I'd heard that schools had good air conditioning now, but I didn't think it'd be this good."

Lucid stared at her blankly, which made her laugh a bit. "Don't worry, I'm just talking to myself. Should we start off with some questions? First things first, what's your name?"

He told her.

"Did your parents name you?"
"No. From my understanding, the chairman of the institute I'm staying at came up with it."
"Oh, really? Well. It suits you. Anyway, I heard you like reading. Is that true?"
"Hmm... Yes, I suppose you could say that." Lucid answered rather hesitantly.
"Could you elaborate?"
"I think it's more accurate to say that I like reading books to study."

Had she heard him correctly? She wasn't exactly sure. First of all, where the hell had that answer come from? And second of all...

"I'm sorry, but you are in the first grade, correct?"
"Yes."

That was answer enough, but Nayeon still had to stop herself from asking his age.

"Alright, then. Could you explain the difference to me?"
"I think that reading and reading to study have different objectives. When I first came to school, I read everything I could get my hands on, because I liked to read. I read biographies and textbooks on math, science, grammar. My goal back then was to immerse myself in the books and marvel at the ideas in them. But now, my goal is to study. I'm reading books so I can understand their content and gain more knowledge. So, since there are two different goals, I think they should be seen as two different things."

Nayeon thought (or rather, knew) that further interviewing would be rather pointless. If a first grader was able to convey his thoughts with such eloquence and sound logic, didn't that automatically qualify him as a genius? This wasn't just a tip. This was a huge scoop.

"Well then," she continued, "what books have you been reading recently?"
"Physics, mainly. I'd like to learn more about physical phenomena. But I found out that you need to know a lot of math to understand physics. So I've been reading math books, too, but I'm not that good at it, so the physics books make little sense to me."
"How far along are you with math?"
"Just the four arithmetic equations. I think I understand linear equations well enough."

Was he really a first grader? He sounded more like a middle schooler.

"A first grader who knows linear equations?" Jang asked, interrupting Nayeon's recollection. "Are you sure he's in elementary? Not middle school?"

Nayeon cringed internally at the realization that she and Jang had thought the same thing, but powered through to continue her explanation.

"Yes, sir, yes. Anyway, we don't need to have a long meeting about this. With his looks and his brains, he's going to be a huge hit! I know it."

Jang turned around to look at Wang, one of the writers.

"Do you have a story in mind?"
"First, we need more information on his school life. Or even his life at the institute," Wang answered, twirling a pen between her fingers. "We'll include some more interviews, get his IQ tested, and ask a science high school or even a university to collab and get a professional evaluation. That good?"
"He's even more stunning in person, I guarantee it." Nayeon chimed in. "He doesn't look wholly Korean, but it's not like he looks like a foreigner, either. It's weird, but it works. You take one look and you know he's objectively really good-looking. My point is, the story doesn't matter! His face alone could bring in so many views!"
"Nayeon, sweetie. I admire your confidence, but his face is something the camera crew will take care of. We're writers."
"I'm just saying. There's nothing wrong with having something pretty to look at."

Jang ignored this whole exchange, instead turning to the younger producer to relay directions.
"Jaehyung, get the cameras ready. Ms. Wang, I trust you to come up with a good storyline and a solid schedule. Get back to me with both."
"How long?"
"We're not sure this'll work, so 20 minutes for now."

And with that, the meeting was over. As they left the room, one of the writers, Yunseon Jo, approached Nayeon.

"Was he really all that?" she asked.
"Oh my God!" Nayeon shouted. "You have no idea! Like, so much better than any child actor I've ever seen! I literally had to stop myself from hugging him, it was insane!"
"Look at you. You're totally gone. I saw it coming, with you going on and on about his face instead of focusing on a story. Are you into kids?"
"Hey! That's going way too far! I'm just saying, his face keeps popping up in my head..."

A loud noise rang through the hallway as Yunseon slapped Nayeon's arm.
"That! That's going to far! Watch what you say, Nayeon. That's honestly going into lovesickness territory."

Nayeon rubbed her arm gingerly, but still looked like she had more to say. Thankfully, Wang stepped in just in time to stop her.

"That's enough. The producer told you already, but I'll remind you just in case. We're writers. We come up with a story for the program. The camera works on the looks. Or do you want a transfer?"
"Ms. Wang! Aww, that's so mean! I was born to be a writer, you know that!"

Nayeon tried her best to escape her situation, using her status as the youngest writer to act cute and innocent. It didn't exactly work, per se, but Wang still found it endearing enough. She invited her juniors to dinner, and the three took the elevator down.

Lucid, having reached middle school level mathematics, had gotten a new idea during class a few days ago and was now attempting a new type of magic. He found that the best thing to come out of this whole "prodigy" ordeal was that none of the teachers scolded him for not paying attention in class.

"Kyung-ho," Hee Yeon warned,"pay attention, sweetie."
"But plaster face...!"

Indeed, "plaster face" wasn't paying attention at all, but before Kyung-ho could point that out, Hee Yeon sighed and warned him again.

"Kyung-ho! You know better than you talk back to your elders, don't you?"
"Yes..." said the boy, his voice barely a whisper.
"I'll let it slide just this once, because I know you're usually a very good students who listens to what 
I say. But it's just this once! Next time I catch you doing something else, you'll have to be punished. Is that clear?"
"Yes..."

Hee Yeon knew that she was being rather unfair, but she pushed her guilt aside. Even during the slight commotion, Lucid appeared to have been lost in his own thoughts, but Hee Yeon was actually quite grateful for this. Though it had only carried on for a short while, the other children all rather enjoyed watching their teacher become increasingly flustered at Lucid's incessant questions. It had been something of a game for them, and they had grown to look forward to Lucid asking questions, going as far as to persuade him to do so.

Thankfully, however, Lucid's interest had shifted to self-study (or so Hee Yeon firmly believed, as she didn't want to think that he was disappointed in her lack of knowledge), meaning he now spent the majority of his time pondering to himself or reading books. This meant that Hee Yeon could finally relax, with no need to be on constant guard for potential questions, and it was also why she left Lucid be in class.

During break, Lucid left the classroom and made his way down to the courtyard, which he had been staring at for the better portion of class. As it was, Myeong-su, from the classroom next door, had also come out to play. As excited as ever, he ran and ran, determined to make the most out of the ten minute break between classes.

"Oh hey, plaster face!" he called. "Aren't you cold?"

While Myeong-su was wearing a thick jacket, Lucid was only wearing a T-shirt.

"Oh, yeah. I'm fine." Lucid grinned.
