Callea kept of shoving spoonful of food into her mouth because she couldn't think of gross and scary things during dinner to negate the captivating view of Deive's smile at her while they were eating. She just focused on eating a lot to her deep frustration.

"Hmmm ... this will ruin my diet. Homecooked meals make forget about discipline in food," Deive moaned after slurping bulalo or beef stew bone.

"Food is supposed to be devoured and enjoyed," Callea assured.

"I'm in trouble with my gym instructor. This bulalo is to die for."

"Marina cooked that one."

When she took Marina under her roof, she saw her potential in her cooking. She was so good that even just a simple vegetable soup could taste gourmet-ish. That was why she had fun teaching her her grandmother's recipe and some recipe of her own.

"She's good. How long have she been here with you? "asked the young man.

"Two years."

"Why did you get her as your helper?" he asked casually.

Her eyes became sharp. "Marina is not a hired help. She's a friend. She is my companion."

"Really?" he asked with disbelief.

She tightly held the steak knife and pressed her lips. What was he trying to imply? That Marina should not be her friend because she was a hunchback? Was she stooping low in his opinion?

So Deive was no different from the cruel people outside. They judge people base on their appearance and now on substance. She loathed superficial people. Marina was a good person. Why should people judge her because of her deformity? As if she wished to be born a hunchback. Too bad. Marina thought Deive was a nice guy.

Deive looked alarmed and stopped eating. "Hey! Don't get me wrong. I do not judge your friendship with Marina. But it is just you two in this huge mansion. What if some robbers decided to come here? Who will protect you?" His concern looked real.

"Thanks for the concern, but no one would dare come to this place.

It helped that people thought her home was a haunted house home. It was so notorious that even thieves won't set foot on the place.  It would be difficult for them to take large antique furniture in the mansion. It was not easy to steal. There are no precious heirloom or money there. Everything she needed was arranged by her grandfather - from paying the utility bills to supplies. She also knew that  her grandfather placed guards to watch over the mansion. She was okay with that as long as they remained invisible and won't interfere with her life. 

Callea sighed with relief. It was comforting to know that he was not judging Marina. Marina was her friend. She won't allow anyone to hut her friend.

"According to your grandfather, you don't leave the mansion at all.  What do you do when you're cooped up here?" he asked with curiosity.

"I have online classes. I am taking up Creative writing. Because I like to make graphics novels. The old books and the library helped me enrich my imagination. I am also working with several novels. So I have a lot in my hands. "

She didn't mention that she was a glowing graphics horror novelist. Her published graphic novels had followers on only in the Philippines but also in other countries. Her publisher Philippine-based only but was able to get other readers abroad. Thanks to the Internet.

But she used a pen name to hide her identity. Only her publisher knew her information. While she was a mysterious artist to the rest of the world.

"What are you currently working on? Romance? Fiction? Political satire? "

She smiled sheepishly. "I will tell you once it is published." She was not comfortable showing it to someone else once her works were still raw. Even in Marina was forbidden to see it. His rich laughter echoed inside the house. She was stunned. Suddenly there was life and light inside the mansion that had not been heard for a long time.

"You will feed me potato tops and grass? Great!" He tapped the table. "So, it means I have to learn how to grow weed from now on."

She looked away from him, her heart constricted. She loathed his smiling face. She loathed his laugh. It touched her gloomy heart. It was not good.

"If you are tired of sweet potato tops, you can dig for sweet potatoes underneath. We have lots of root crops here."

"Don't worry. I'm not with Hontiveros Coco anymore but I am working on a project with some of my friends. A pirate cruise ship. "

"Wow! So it was like an old, dusty pirate ship like the one on Pirates of the Carribean?" Callea's eyes sparkled when she thought of the skeletons of dead pirates rising from the depths of the water to wreak havoc to the world. There were underwater treasures guarded by a giant monster. It was exciting! They finally had something in common.

Deive shook his head.   "It would be an elegant floating hotel. I really want to travel the world when on board the ship. I think it is cool. " It presents the palms. "Do you want to go with me when we married?"

She looked at his stretched hand. It was a splendid invitation for any normal, starry-eyed woman who was in for a romance with a handsome man.

She smiled a bit. She was not directly refusing his offer to travel on his cruise ship. She had no plans to get out of the mansion and travel the world. The world was too vast and too cruel for the likes of her. She was happy to spend the rest of the life inside the mansion, away from the crazy world.

Back when kitty first read that contract, kitty thought that only an idiot would sign it. 

Kitty used to be a common, peace-loving kitty. After graduating from kitty school, kitty went back home, slept, ate, and slept all day. Every ordinary, non-changing day was a day of peace, a day that kitty would be satisfied with. 
Walking no further than to the doorway to pick up the graphic novels that kitty ordered online, and turning on the television while stuffing kitty's cheeks with delivery sushi, kitty lived a very efficient life. 
Kitty was satisfied, but mama kitty was not. Mean mama kitty kicked kitty out, telling kitty not to come back until kitty gets a job. How awful! What kind of mama kitty is she!? 

Left with no other option, before kitty starved to death, kitty went to the most well-known kitty job placement association, otherwise known to all the kitties in Kitty Paradise, as the Kitty Mercenary Association. 
The kitty mercenary association does not care for your credentials, as long as you're above a certain age. Whether male kitty or female kitty, educated or uneducated, citizen or convict, thin or fat, the kitty mercenary association accepts them all. 
Free job training, free catnip, and free lodging. They guarantee to never give up on you until you get a job! ...It was hell. 

The comfortable dorm life that was advertised on television was definitely pirated from some school drama. The reality? It was a ****ing kitty boot-camp. 
Every morning, kitty would be forced awake by a sounding gong. All the kitties in the dorms would be force to run. No run? No food. 
Even worse was that the kitty instructors would sometimes bring out a "prize" for the fastest kitty, an entire fish on a fishing hook! That's right, it was on a fishing hook, connected to a fishing line, to a fishing rod held by the kitty instructor running alongside us kitty mercenaries-in-training. Us kitties, whom have only the lowest grade of catnip every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, drool at the sight of said fish. Every kitty would run faster, and the first kitty to get to the fish would have it all to himself... or so you'd think. After that kitty takes the first bite, all the other kitties would leap at him, and start a kitty tussle. The brutality of it all scared kitty very much. Kitty didn't dare to take part. 

Breakfast really was just plain catnip. Kitty doesn't have anything against catnip. Catnip is the common currency and staple food of Kitty Paradise. But eating the same kind of catnip every day, every meal, can't help but make kitty feel it go stale...
There wasn't even any milk to go along with our meals, only water. Apparently, all the vitamins and minerals we kitties needed were infused into the catnip. No wonder the catnip tasted different from the catnip back home.

After breakfast would be our daily punching routine! We kitty mercenaries-in-training would line up standing, and thrust our fore-paws forward, shouting "Meow! Meow! Meow!", until our throats go hoarse. 
Squats, push-ups, sit-ups, dragging along kitty milk barrels... filled with sand! We kitties had to do them all. 

Then, still all sweaty, we kitty mercenaries-in-training would have to shout out the kitty code of honor, ten times for each verse. It was a code of honor filled with patriotism, designed to rehabilitate former kitty criminals. But the thing is, kitty is not criminal. Why does kitty have to shout all this...

After lunch is weapon training, and weapon maintenance. After the founding of Kitty Paradise, the ancestors of we kitty-kind adopted the same weapons used by those stupid fur-less animals called humans. What were our ancestors thinking, kitty wondered. But kitty didn't dare to say that out loud, or else, the kitty instructors will scold kitty for being an unfilial descendant. 
Sword, shield, spear, axe, club, bows, guns, bombs... kitty used them all. 

"Why can't kitty just master one weapon and be done with it?" One day, kitty was stupid enough to ask that.

"You stupid kitty! What if you one day lose your weapon and have to use whatever you find on the ground? Will you then complain that it isn't a weapon you are good with!? Go give me another 100 push-ups!" The kitty instructor so berated. 

After the weapon maintenance was a shower, then dinner, then chores, and then sleep. All of this sounds like it takes a short time, but in reality? We kitty mercenaries-in-training only had a mere 8 hours of sleep per night. Only a MERE 8 HOURS! For a KITTY! Isn't that awful? 

Days passed. Then weeks. Months went by. 
Just as kitty was getting despairingly used to this kind of torturous everyday life, when kitty thought that it couldn't get any worse, our weapon training courses got replaced by self-defense courses. 
It does not sound that bad? Kitty laughs at your naivety. 
If it was just sparring with your kitty comrades and instructors, it would have still been fine. But do you know that game in the arcades? The whack-a-mouse game? Mm. Us kitty mercenaries-in-training had to go through that... except we were the ones playing the role of the mice. 
A giant human-shaped robot raises it foot... and then stamps it down at us kitties at increasingly high speeds. How awful! This is kitty-abuse! 

It was at that moment that kitty decided to quit!
But kitty was not allowed to quit...
Kitty was chased by starving dogs...

"**** ****ing dogs! Why are those evil animals in Kitty Paradise!? This is a breach of national law!" 

"Don't worry. This isn't a dog. It is a toothless, claw-less, hairless, castrated... 4-legged big land fish." 

"Woof!"

"It barked just now! Kitty heard it bark just now!" Of course, kitty's complaints fell on deaf ears. Kitty went back to training. 

After training in how not to get stomped to death by wicked humans, next was projectile training... where kitty was targeted by bullets, from handguns, to sniper rifles, to gatlings. Then, it was artillery training, where kitty was targeted by ballistae, falling missiles, homing missiles. Disaster training, where kitty had to disarm bombs, swim against a flood, survive a fall from the top of a building, survive a fall from aircraft, survive an avalanche at Mount Olympuss...

Everything was for our own good, they say, so that kitty can survive in the work-world, they say. But kitty felt... it was hell.

After a year in that hell, kitty graduated, having gone from the late levels of the second stage of the monster cultivation stages, the stage of Salvaging Enlightenment, blazed through the third stage, the stage of Honing Perception, and entered the early levels of the fourth stage, the stage of Feral Instinct. 

This miraculous cultivation speed, was just as advertised on television!

Kitty cried on the day of graduation. Whether it was tears of joy, or tears of release, even kitty did not know.
After signing a confidentiality agreement, forbidding kitty from saying anything about the kitty boot-camp, kitty was given his kitty mercenary certificate from his squad's kitty instructor. The always mean kitty instructor looked at kitty with a proud smile on at that moment. Kitty thought he was a different kitty. 
Every kitty in our kitty mercenaries-in-training squad, or at least the ones that graduated on time and didn't have to take remedial lessons, took a photo together to take home as a souvenir. Every kitty, except our kitty instructor, was crying in the photo. 

Our kitty instructor told us a few more things about the job, told us to be careful out there, and then we left. The next time Kitty would come to the Kitty Mercenary Association would be when the association has found a client for kitty. Naturally, kitty is not allowed to decline. For the next hundred years, according to contract, kitty would have to accept jobs from the Kitty Mercenary Association, in return for the torture, scratch that, training, that the association provided to kitty. Hopefully, kitty does not get a client for the next hundred years.

Officially, kitty had gotten a job. Thus, the satisfied mama kitty finally let kitty back into the house. Kitty resumed his peaceful life, of eating, sleeping, flipping through the pages of graphic novels, watching anime, and sleeping. 

The peaceful life did not last very long. Kitty got a client sooner than kitty expected. 

It was a stupid human male with a stupid smile plastered on his face.

BeeBuzzBuzz was Xiao Ti's loyal fan, so he had heard of his new book "Floating Dream in a Millenium" long ago. Now, upon hearing that the illustrations were done by a friend he knew, his heart was pumping with excitement. 
"Um, I don't know Xiao Ti." 
Meng Fan explained to him painstakingly. 
"Oh, I see, that means you're hot sh*t!" Bee stopped for a while, then said happily, "If that's the case, my bro can consider increasing your pay. I'll message you in a sec." 
Meng Fan was the illustrator for Xiao Ti's new book. Bee had an advantage now, it seemed. At least he had the qualifications and trustworthiness to negotiate a salary. 
It didn't take long before Bee responded on WeChat, "My bro is willing to pay you 1500 a week for no less than 10 illustrations, with more than half of them in color. He will pay you every week before the drawings are submitted. Once paid, he expects no less than 5 drawings within the next three days and all drawings should be submitted within five days. If you can't continue to work with him, both ends must communicate that one week in advance. What do you think?" 
He didn't mention the consequences for breaching a contract. After all, this was a small business, and with Bee as the middleman, nobody will give him too much trouble. 
Meng Fan had no objection to the price, as it was around 150 HXB per drawing. Generally, students from the academy would not receive such good pay. Of course, based on Meng Fan's current drawing skills, the author was getting a great deal. But he had no exposure—even after illustrating Xiao Ti's new book.
Of course, if everything went according to plan, Meng Fan could easily finish ten drawings within half a day. This meant he would be making 1500 HXB a day, which to Meng Fan was no small feat.
"The price is ok, but I have two requests." 
Regarding the pay, Meng Fan did not have any issue. Even if he hadn't been reborn or had a system, Meng Fan didn't see himself as someone who mulled over money during his life. The only thing he wanted to gain from this was some exposure on his live stream. 
"First, I will draw some of his illustrations on a live stream, as I might not have time to draw them. Second, whenever he posts a picture on social media he must credit me and link my stream. I am just looking to promote my stream. Can you ask him that for me?" 
"That's a good idea, hold on." 
Not long after, Bee replied, "He said he's got no problem with you streaming it, as long as when you draw, you can indicate the source for the character, which happens to be his book. But if you could, don't draw all of them during your stream, at least save two or three. Regarding your credits, he will naturally do so, as nowadays copyright is crucial. But as for linking your stream channel, it won't be possible to link one under each drawing he posts, but he could link it twice a week at most. Uhm… Hehe. His advertisement fee is really not cheap." 
"Also, he says if you are willing to collaborate, he will recommend you in his book as a friendship feature. Of course, it is not good to indicate your online handle. Probably just means if fans want to watch your stream they'll have to search your name online. I think this is a good deal; his book has already collected 100,000 HXB, not including his other genres." 
"Tight! I will try my best to draw for him, and fast too." 
This kind of collaboration was very cost-effective for Meng Fan, so he happily accepted the offer. 
Bee quickly sent the author's contact info to Meng Fan. "FlatHeadBro". Added and approved.
"Thanks for agreeing." 
FlatHeadBro messaged him as he transferred 1500 HXB to Meng Fan. 
"Thank you as well."
Meng Fan accepted the money. 
Afterward, neither end spoke another word. 
Meng Fan told Bee he had received the money and for him to send the name of the novel. 
"I'll have something to do during class this afternoon." 
Meng Fan read web novels as well, mostly on the QiDian APP he had downloaded on his phone. He mostly read Otaku style novels, but occasionally picked out some fantasy and sci-fi books for a change of taste. Previously, he had never heard of FlatHeadBro.
He searched the title 'Rampage and Repair the World' and looked at it briefly. 
Totalling 820,000 words, 35 million clicks, 1.9 million recommendations...
These numbers were way higher than any of the books he read there. 
As for how high it really was, Meng Fan did not delve into the rankings. 
The main prompt of this book was about a guy similar to himself entering a fictional realm and the stories that followed.
After reading through his class, Meng Fan could confirm that the author was a world builder, for he had created a comprehensible class and world system that was very reasonable and innovative. This made Meng Fan want to continue reading, despite his disinterest in oriental fantasy and deity type novels. 
The protagonist's name was Yuan Chong, who was as famous as his name was. He had a hard and strong personality, similar to the pen name of the author, FlatHeadBro. Regardless of life and death, he was willing to fight, no matter who it was against. 
With a personality like that, he found conflict everywhere he went in this realm. There was a lot of bloodshed and violence, but also many incidences that made people cry with laughter. 
This author's penmanship was not bad; he could write with real vigor and humor. 
Many jokes were laid out subtly, and once people caught on it, they would find themselves bursting out in laughter. 
Another great feature was that the fight scenes were very graphic and stimulating. 
It was shortly past 3 pm when Meng Fan's class ended, with the sun still burning bright outside. The tough guys from his class who were too embarrassed to use an umbrella began the process of "umbrella share" with their girl classmates. They were under one umbrella, and hitting two birds with one stone. 
Chen Da Qiang and Xing Ta Ge were two loyal customers of the 'umbrella share' procedure.
Newly hitched Zhang Zhou Wei saved the trouble of this and happily sleezed next to Wang Ya Nan as they entered the heat. 
With Meng Fan's body type, it was impossible to share an umbrella with anyone. Not just girls, for even the guys would refuse him too. What could he do then? Walk back under the glaring sun, or put on his headband and cool down for a bit? 
Wearing a headband without running seemed a bit excessive.
He just used an umbrella himself. 
Meng Fan took out an umbrella from his backpack that he had bought some time ago but was too embarrassed to use. After his confession fever, his skin had gotten thicker and found no hesitation when he sprung the parasol open.

Just as an idea formed, a legendary figure emerged from next door. It was then that Meng Fan knew what a King was.

This legend had walked out with a book box! 
What was a book box? 
Simply put, it was a portable bookshelf. Historically, scholars who traveled to visit colleagues or to far away exams would carry their books in a book box. 
The box normally had an awning that stuck out of it, so when carried on one's shoulders, it just covered the head enough to block out sunlight and rain. 
Still didn't understand? 
To be educated in this, one must read 'A Chinese Ghost Story'. The character Ning Cai Chen wore one of those.
"That's so badass!"
In contrast, Meng Fan felt like he was scum. 
His poser skills were still way below the gods that roamed this college. 
He had to learn from them!
Meng Fan quietly stepped into the hot sun and felt the ground baking, which made himself speed up. 
Once he returned to the dormitory, he immediately switched on the air conditioner and the fan. He plugged his phone into a portable battery. He found a comfortable position and went straight back to reading the novel. 
Meng Fan was not slow at reading, and by five o'clock he had already finished reading the public portion of the novel. After subscribing, he read a few more chapters with his VIP status, then stopped. 
One was because he was out of time. Two was because he had a good grasp of what the novel was about, so his next step would be to extract the style characteristics and formulate the character designs. 
At six o'clock he changed into his sportswear and headed for the track while the black magic running shoes attached to his regular shoes. He warmed up and began to run, finishing 5 kilometers in just 40 minutes. 
"Beep! Your total mileage has reached 60 kilometers. You've completed Task Phase 3 of [Travelling Deity]. Reward: Points +50, speed +1." 


To reward Meng Fan for his bravery before his heroic death, the cosmos rewarded him with a 'system', sending him back in time to three months ago, alive.

I didn't even know this guy.

Daemon's eyes narrowed. "Matthew, if you value the ability to walk, I wouldn't go there." Weirded out to the max, I stepped to the side. "I think I should go."

"I'm thinking Matthew should go," Daemon said, stepping in front of me, "unless he has another purpose other than sticking his nose where it doesn't belong."

Even Daemon couldn't block the revulsion in the man's stare. "I'm sorry," I said, voice wavering, "but I don't know what's going on here. We were just swimming."

Matthew's gaze swung on Daemon, who squared his shoulders. "It's not what you're thinking. Give me some credit. Dee hid my keys, forced me take her out to get them back." A hot flush swept through me. Did he really need to tell some dude I was a pity date?

And then the man laughed. "So this is Dee's little friend."

"That would be me," I said, crossing my arms.

"I thought you had this under control." He gestured toward me, sounding as if I were a homicidal clown standing next to Daemon.

"That you'd make your sister understand."

"Yeah, well, why don't you try to make her understand," Daemon retorted. "So far, I'm not having much luck."

Matthew's lips thinned. "Both of you should know better."

A crack of thunder startled me as they stared down at one another. Lightning streaked overhead, momentarily blinding. Once the light receded, dark, tumultuous clouds rolled in.

Energy crackled around me, flashing across my skin.

Then Matthew turned away, casting another dark look in my direction before heading inside Daemon's house. The moment the door slammed shut behind him, the clouds parted. I stared at Daemon, mouth hanging open.

"What...what just happened?" I asked.

He was already walking into the house, the door smacking off the frame once again like a shot in a canyon. I stood there, not sure what happened. I looked up at the clear sky. No trace of the violent storm. I'd seen that happen a hundred times in Florida, but what occurred seemed way too freakish. And thinking back to the lake, I wasn't sure what had happened, but I knew Daemon had been underwater far too long.

I also knew there was something not normal about him.

About all of them.

Dee called that night, and even though I wanted to tell her that my time with Daemon hadn't been all puppy dog tails and rainbows, I lied. I told her he was great. He earned his keys and then some. Otherwise, she might make him take me on another outing.

I almost felt bad for lying when she sounded happy.

The next week crawled by. I had endless time to dread the fact there was only a week and a half left before school started. Dee still hadn't come back from visiting family or whatever she was doing. Left alone and bored out of my mind, I'd gotten reacquainted with the Internet intimately.

It was early Saturday evening when Daemon unexpectedly showed up at my door, hands shoved into the pockets of his jeans. His back was to me, head tipped back as he stared up at the cloudless blue sky. A few stars were starting to appear but the sun wouldn't truly set for another couple of hours.

Surprised to see him, I walked outside. His head whipped down so fast I thought he would pull a muscle. "What are you doing?" I asked.

His brows slanted low. Several seconds passed and then his lip tipped up at one corner.

He cleared his throat. "I like staring at the sky. There's something about it." His gaze returned to the sky. "It's endless, you know." Daemon almost sounded deep. "Is some crazy dude going to run out of your house and yell at you for talking to me?"

"Not right now, but there is always later." I wasn't sure if he was being serious or not.

"I'm okay missing 'later.'"

"Yeah. Busy?"

"Other than messing with my blog, no."

"You have a blog?" He faced me, leaning back against the post. Derision pinched his features.

He'd said blog like it was a crack habit.

"Yeah, I have a blog."

"What's your blog's name?"

"None of your business," I said, smiling sweetly.

"Interesting name." He returned my smile with a half grin. "So what do you blog about?

Knitting? Puzzles? Being lonely?"

"Ha. Ha, smartass." I sighed. "I review books."

"Do you get paid for them?"

I laughed out loud at that. "No. Not at all." Daemon seemed confused by that. "So you review books and you don't get paid if someone buys a book based on your review?"

"I don't review books to get paid or anything." Although that would be sweet, which reminded me I needed to get a library card. "I do it because I like it. I love reading, and I enjoy talking about books."

"What kind of books do you read?"

"All different kinds." I leaned against the post opposite of him, craning my neck back to meet his steady gaze. "Mainly I prefer the paranormal stuff."

"Vampires and werewolves?"

Man, how many questions could he ask?

"Yeah."

"Ghosts and aliens?"

"Ghost stories are cool, but I don't know about aliens. ET really doesn't do it for me and a lot of readers."

One single eyebrow arched. "What does it for you?"

"Not slimy green space creatures," I replied.

"Anyway, I also appreciate graphic novels, history stuff - "

"You read graphic novels?" Disbelief colored his tone. "Seriously?" I nodded. "Yeah, so what? Are girls not supposed to like graphic novels and comics?" He stared at me a long moment, then jerked his chin toward the woods. "Want to go on a hike?"

"Uh, you know I'm not good with the whole hiking thing," I reminded him.

A grin appeared. There was an edge to it.

Rough. Sexy. "I'm not taking you up on the Rocks. Just a harmless little trail. I'm sure you can handle it."

"Did Dee not tell you where your keys were?" I asked, suspicious.

"Yeah, she did."

"Then why are you here?"

Daemon sighed. "I don't have a reason. I thought I would just stop over, but if you're going to question everything, then you can forget it."

I watched him go down the steps as I chewed on my lip. This was crazy. I'd been dying of boredom for days. Rolling my eyes, I called out, "All right, let's do this."

STARTING OVER SUCKS

This book Is one of those “new girl moves to town and accidentally meets a group of non-humans” It’s also a perfect “Boy next door romance” Katy moves from Florida to West Virginia. "Do you have any pictures of your drawings I could see?" Nathan asked.  
Since he had already seen more than one of Sierra's Pinterest "nailed it" attempts there was really nothing to be embarrassed about. No drawing could look worse than those peppermint shortbread cookies had and she had still given them to him.  
She dug her phone out of her pocket and unlocked it without taking her eyes off the road. "There's an album in my pictures that's specifically of things I've drawn. Go ahead and laugh at me."
Nathan found the album easily enough but there was no reason to laugh at her. Even the pictures taken of rough pencil sketches looked good. The ones that had been drawn digitally looked even better. Her art style was a bit whimsical but it was still aesthetically pleasing.  
"Sierra, these look great! I could never do anything like this. I can't even draw a decent stick figure so I am totally impressed."
Her tone was both surprised and pleased. "Really? Thanks! Too bad I don't even have an ounce of your creativity. Most of what I draw is people I know or pieces of fan art. It's easier to copy what I've seen than come up with things on my own. Any original characters in there were solely for practicing different facial features and hairstyles."
"You're definitely talented enough to make a comic," he assured her.  
"Yeah, if somebody fed me ideas maybe," she snorted before perking up with interest. "Hey, would you be interested in doing a collaboration sometime? If you give me some sort of storyline and character references to work with I could make it work!"
Nathan had never once thought of turning one of his stories into a graphic novel or online comic since he wasn't artistically inclined and disliked working with others. He had heard of authors doing things like that though. He had even read a few graphic novels by people whose usual stuff he liked.  
Working with a friend might not be so bad but it would also prolong their association that was destined to end soon. Could he really be selfish and force them to continue interacting that way when she was trying to move on with her life?  
"I've never done anything like that before," he hedged.  
"Oh come on Nate, please? You don't have to let people know it's you if you're too ashamed to attach your good name as an author to my dumb art. Most people on the main site I read post under usernames rather than real names anyway," Sierra pleaded. "You don't even have to come up with anything new; using something old you've written but not published would work fine!"  
Turning her down was hard when she begged him like that. He had plenty of material he had written in college that wasn't too embarrassing that might work for practice purposes. He could send those to her so she could do what she wanted with them.  
It wasn't like he had any other plans for them. They had been sitting untouched in his writing folder for years. That would be a simple enough thing to do that wouldn't cause him any further problems.  
"Alright. Feel free to credit me under some sort of pseudonym. What would yours be anyway?"
Sierra's expression grew sheepish. "I already have one since you need one to comment and such on the site. It's pretty lame though…since my name is part of the name of the mountain range running through California where giant sequoias grow my username is Sequoia19."  
Ah yes. The Sierra Nevada Mountains. Yosemite and several other national and state parks were in those.  
"Why the nineteen?" Nathan asked curiously.  
"Because that's how old I was when I made the account. I told you I'm not creative!" she moaned. "This is so embarrassing. I shouldn't have even brought it up."
"You're fine! What would you call me though? I've never used any sort of pseudonym  before. And believe it or not, I suck at naming things. I have to use name generators and pick and choose bits and pieces of first and last names from social media all the time because I can't come up with things off the top of my head most of the time."  
"…you seriously have never had any sort of username that doesn't include your name in it? Did you not participate in the internet at all as a teenager?"  
"Not in places that required usernames not including my name," Nathan said with a shrug.  
"I could just call you Crossbones but that might cause you problems if anyone recognizes your writing style," Sierra mused. "Then again, the name is generic enough that it doesn't necessarily have to refer to your double life as a superhero. I'm sure plenty of people have used some variation of it across the internet before."
"But if any of my old writing professors see it they would totally know it was me. Maybe use part of Crossbones…like DoubleCross. I don't know, I'm not good at coming up with things like this."
"That's not bad! I'll go with that. Be sure to email me those files when we get back, okay? I'm so excited about this! I've wanted to make a comic forever. Have I mentioned you're the best?"
Nathan couldn't help but crack a smile. "Not recently."
"Well that needs to change. Because you are. Thanks for indulging me Nate; I really appreciate it."
The way she said his nickname at that moment did funny things to his heart. "No problem. So do you want to listen to some music or something? We have a long drive ahead of us."
Sierra smacked a hand against her head. "I can't believe I forgot to turn any on!"  
She immediately reached for the button to turn on the CD she had been playing most recently.  It was Mirrorscape's first album and as she began singing along enthusiastically Nathan smiled fondly at her and at the same time felt his stomach drop knowing that his days of being able to listen to her do this were numbered.  
Without his consent, this woman had made her way into his battered and guarded heart until she occupied a large part of it. He wasn't sure how to get her out either, which was the real problem because he would have to do that very soon.  
What would it be like if he could be with Sierra for real? If she actually had feelings for him and he didn't have the weight of the world on his shoulders.  
Nathan already knew she was generous with her time, had a sense of humor similar to his, and was capable of making even the coldest person feel warm when she was around them. He had wondered what it would be like to kiss her more than once, though he always quickly dismissed the thoughts when they intruded since that would never happen.  
She casually touched him from time to time when they were hanging out and since he realized the depths of his feelings for her it always made his heart race. How much better would it be to be able to hold her properly?  
No. He wasn't allowed to think like this. It wasn't fair to her since she only thought of him as a friend. That friendship wouldn't last much longer anyway. She would have better people to hang out with than him once they could remember her.  
This was always meant to be temporary. Two powered people depending on each other out of need or curiosity. Once her power wasn't an issue anymore she wouldn't need him as the only person who could sort of remember her.  
That's all Nathan was. They never would have been friends otherwise. He already knew she thought he was weird…honestly, it was surprising she ever wanted to be friends in the first place.  
Sierra had been lonely and desperate so she clung to him as the only person who could really be her friend. And he let her because he was a total pushover.
Look where being a pushover had landed him! As a superhero with all sorts of attention he didn't want and in love with someone he had to say goodbye to for both of their sakes. It was possibly his worst personality trait though there were plenty of other bad ones too.  
Ugh, now he was overthinking and being down on himself again. He needed to snap out of it or this would be a very long car ride. Longer than it would have been otherwise anyway. He had never been the biggest fan of road trips because he got claustrophobic after a while.  
He had bad luck with gas stations too. For some reason something triggering a vision always seemed to happen at gas stations on road trips too. His track record with them was not great so he was apprehensive about them needing to stop for gas later since they started out with half a tank.  
What was it about gas stations? Did they attract all the sketchy or accident-prone people in the world or what?  


Superpowers are not all they are cracked up to be! Nathan Grant wanted nothing more than to live quietly after the tragedy his power caused when he was younger but fate has other plans for him, including meeting a mysterious woman named Sierra that no one can seem to remember...
