 She was zoning out. She didn't notice that Marina was back in the kitchen after she fixed the table at the dining area for dinner. She didn't want Marina to see the guests a while ago. She was protective of her because of her past experiences with strangers. But Deive insisted that Marina must meet his friends, too.

"They are kind and handsome, too." Marina was grinning from ear-to-ear. "Sir Averill even asked me if I am that hunchback in the story that you created. The one where people thought that she was a jinx but became the hero in the end." It was a particular favorite of Callea because she showed that not all beautiful creatures are kind and some who were considered ugly could have a good heart and even save a lot of people.

"Averill know about that? He reads my novels?" she asked in awe. Averill was a businessman. She never thought he had it in him to read graphic novels. And how did he know about her identity as an artist? Her works were popular, sure. But aside from her publisher, nobody knew the real identity of the artist behind her works. She hated attending book signings and meet and greet because she valued her privacy so much.

"Yes. Even the grumpy one is a fan of yours." Marina stopped for a bit to think. "Ah! That's Sir Lucian. Señorito Deive is so proud of you. He boasted you to his friends. You are not just a great artist but you are good in history as well. Now they are interested to visit the underground cemetery with you as their guide."

Callea removed her apron and left the kitchen. At the living room, Keiran was playing the piano. Deive and his friends were laughing with Sydney's antics about her graphic novel that he read. It was a piece of happy jazz music and was fit for jovial mood.

They stopped talking when Lucian saw her. "Your bride is here," he said to Deive.

Sydney stopped talking and moving entirely and his jaw was slack. He looked like he was afraid to move. He was still afraid of her. He apologized for screaming a while ago when she took off her veil. She couldn't laugh much afterward because he looked like he was about to have a heart attack. Deive had to give him his water canister and made her drink water to calm him down. She promised not to scare him anymore. Well, not that much.

She forced a smile. "Dinner will be ready in a bit."

"I could smell the ginataang adobo. It makes me hungrier," said Lucian and stood up.

While Averill walked towards her. She noticed that he was holding a copy of her graphic novel and a pentel pen. "Could you please sign an autograph for me?"

She stepped back and shook her head. "I don't sign autographs. I mean, not in person." She didn't even want to face her fans. It was weird that someone asked her to personally sign her book.

Lucian crossed his arms over his chest. Drat! The man looked intimidating when his attention was focused on her. "As Deive's future, you can't refuse us. In return, we will guard Deive so he won't stray to other women."

"Don't be like that, man," Deive complained. "I am a good boy. I am faithful." Then Deive smiled at her. "Please sign it for my friends."

He couldn't say no to Deive at that point. His friends would find it more it weirder if she would refuse them furthermore. She took the pentel pen from Averill. She was a bit shaking as she signed her book that had just been released at the market last month. She smiled when she got a hang of it. It also felt great to sign her own book. "Just make sure that my identity will be anonymous to others. I just gave in because you would make sure that Deive won't go back to his womanizing ways."

Deive scratched his own head. "I am a good boy," he insisted.

"Can I make a request?" asked Sydney and raise his hand. "Deive said you like cosplaying the characters you created. Can you cosplay the red vampire Zapira for me? I got a crush on her."

"What?!" exclaimed Deive and hooked his arm on Sidney's neck and tried to choke him.

The rest of them laughed. It was crazy. They were so adorable. And she realized that she hadn't laughed for a long time in the company of strangers. Before it comes easily. That was the old her. She never thought she would experience it again. It was liberating. Deive made him laugh again. With that laugh, Deive also opened the door to her heart. And she would let him inside her heart even if he won't ask for it.

B: "Well, in my experience, especially in the country I live in, Zimbabwe, there are high expectations for young men to get their act together once they have graduated from university. Tanatswa's failure reflects badly on his parent and also his interest in unconventional fields like manga art, music production and game development, which are not careers that parents would think of for their kids, make him seem unfocused. So he doesn't get along with his mother because he has failed at the normal way of doing things plus his interests in other things are a mystery to her, which makes her associate it with senseless drivel. He was just unlucky."
RemroseXOXO: "Do you like petite girls? The MC's love interest is short and petite, but she is very quirky and foul mouthed."
B: "I think petite women can be very nice to look at, especially the cute ones who are compact. I like them, but if you read the recent chapters with Shami, she has abandoned her petite heritage and now I feel betrayed." 
Narutoneverdiedboruto: "I like the fight between Tanatswa and Tichaona. I noticed that people find out the name of their abilities when they reach level 2. Do the names of their ability give away the kind of power they will have?"
B: "Yes. Not all titles will be obvious, but if you can guess their abilities through their titles than you have an advantage over them."
Cherrypompom: "Shami and Tanatswa get together and have graphic sex in your book? Did it have to be that graphic?"
B: "Well, for the story, I think it was necessary. In some aspects of writing, one may depict sex between two lovers in a romanticised way, with just 'they made love' and you leave the rest to your imagination. In my case, I realised that two highly attractive people, living alone together, one being unexperienced and passive whilst the other one being overt and direct, would lead to eventual sexual activity, but the basis behind it was lust. Without the escape of modern conveniences like contraceptives, it's risky business having unprotected sex. So the graphic nature of the depiction was to show how people can get lost in the act without considering the consequences. Pleasure can ensnare people so the depiction had to be raw, irreverent and carnal, because as soon as they were done love making, they were now dealing with other problems."
Sichijpop: "Is this going to be a long novel? Because I love binge reading long books."
B: "Yes, definitely this book is going to be a bit lengthy, but to be honest, I don't know how long. Maybe 500 chapters max or more. If I feel like there is more to tell and people are still interested in reading it, then I assure you, you will have a lot to binge read."
Nier2bnot2b: "Most of your characters have unique backgrounds like the female lead Shami who was studying architecture in university, the film maker Malcom and the most surprising of all, Clarice the pornstar. Why did you create a character that did porn for a living?"
B: "Well, I think as much as porn stars stimulate people's hormones by having sex on camera for entertainment, they are still people who are acting as these personas and have lives of their own. In today's current social media environment as well as entertainment industry, people see the persona and not the person. Pornography can be dehumanizing for the actors who are probably trying to make a living by portraying these characters who are mindless sex addicts that can be objectified. It's all smoke and mirrors at the end of the day, even if it's socially unacceptable in most cultures. So Clarice is an extreme case because she is neither a YouTuber who pretends to be loud and gregarious nor some teen socialite who behaves a certain way to get views, but everyone goes through some process which is just like doing a job to get money. Some make prank videos, some have sex and have their videos posted online."
Tennytom: "When will we see the blue poison lady's brother? I love the plot twist about the reason why they are in Goshem, keep it up!"
B: "You will get some foreshadowing about his appearance, but not anytime soon. A lot will happen before they will have to face him. By the way, thank you for your appreciation of my work, I will work had to post more."

Back when kitty first read that contract, kitty thought that only an idiot would sign it. 

Kitty used to be a common, peace-loving kitty. After graduating from kitty school, kitty went back home, slept, ate, and slept all day. Every ordinary, non-changing day was a day of peace, a day that kitty would be satisfied with. 
Walking no further than to the doorway to pick up the graphic novels that kitty ordered online, and turning on the television while stuffing kitty's cheeks with delivery sushi, kitty lived a very efficient life.

Left with no other option, before kitty starved to death, kitty went to the most well-known kitty job placement association, otherwise known to all the kitties in Kitty Paradise, as the Kitty Mercenary Association. 
The kitty mercenary association does not care for your credentials, as long as you're above a certain age. Whether male kitty or female kitty, educated or uneducated, citizen or convict, thin or fat, the kitty mercenary association accepts them all. 
Free job training, free catnip, and free lodging. They guarantee to never give up on you until you get a job! ...It was hell. 

The comfortable dorm life that was advertised on television was definitely pirated from some school drama. The reality? It was a ****ing kitty boot-camp. 
Every morning, kitty would be forced awake by a sounding gong. All the kitties in the dorms would be force to run. No run? No food. 
Even worse was that the kitty instructors would sometimes bring out a "prize" for the fastest kitty, an entire fish on a fishing hook! That's right, it was on a fishing hook, connected to a fishing line, to a fishing rod held by the kitty instructor running alongside us kitty mercenaries-in-training. Us kitties, whom have only the lowest grade of catnip every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, drool at the sight of said fish. Every kitty would run faster, and the first kitty to get to the fish would have it all to himself... or so you'd think. After that kitty takes the first bite, all the other kitties would leap at him, and start a kitty tussle. The brutality of it all scared kitty very much. Kitty didn't dare to take part. 

Breakfast really was just plain catnip. Kitty doesn't have anything against catnip. Catnip is the common currency and staple food of Kitty Paradise. But eating the same kind of catnip every day, every meal, can't help but make kitty feel it go stale...
There wasn't even any milk to go along with our meals, only water. Apparently, all the vitamins and minerals we kitties needed were infused into the catnip. No wonder the catnip tasted different from the catnip back home.

After breakfast would be our daily punching routine! We kitty mercenaries-in-training would line up standing, and thrust our fore-paws forward, shouting "Meow! Meow! Meow!", until our throats go hoarse. 
Squats, push-ups, sit-ups, dragging along kitty milk barrels... filled with sand! We kitties had to do them all. 

Then, still all sweaty, we kitty mercenaries-in-training would have to shout out the kitty code of honor, ten times for each verse. It was a code of honor filled with patriotism, designed to rehabilitate former kitty criminals. But the thing is, kitty is not criminal. Why does kitty have to shout all this...

After lunch is weapon training, and weapon maintenance. After the founding of Kitty Paradise, the ancestors of we kitty-kind adopted the same weapons used by those stupid fur-less animals called humans. What were our ancestors thinking, kitty wondered. But kitty didn't dare to say that out loud, or else, the kitty instructors will scold kitty for being an unfilial descendant. 
Sword, shield, spear, axe, club, bows, guns, bombs... kitty used them all. 

"Why can't kitty just master one weapon and be done with it?" One day, kitty was stupid enough to ask that.

"You stupid kitty! What if you one day lose your weapon and have to use whatever you find on the ground? Will you then complain that it isn't a weapon you are good with!? Go give me another 100 push-ups!" The kitty instructor so berated. 

After the weapon maintenance was a shower, then dinner, then chores, and then sleep. All of this sounds like it takes a short time, but in reality? We kitty mercenaries-in-training only had a mere 8 hours of sleep per night. Only a MERE 8 HOURS! For a KITTY! Isn't that awful? 

Days passed. Then weeks. Months went by. 
Just as kitty was getting despairingly used to this kind of torturous everyday life, when kitty thought that it couldn't get any worse, our weapon training courses got replaced by self-defense courses. 
It does not sound that bad? Kitty laughs at your naivety. 
If it was just sparring with your kitty comrades and instructors, it would have still been fine. But do you know that game in the arcades? The whack-a-mouse game? Mm. Us kitty mercenaries-in-training had to go through that... except we were the ones playing the role of the mice. 
A giant human-shaped robot raises it foot... and then stamps it down at us kitties at increasingly high speeds. How awful! This is kitty-abuse! 

It was at that moment that kitty decided to quit!
But kitty was not allowed to quit...
Kitty was chased by starving dogs...

"**** ****ing dogs! Why are those evil animals in Kitty Paradise!? This is a breach of national law!" 

"Don't worry. This isn't a dog. It is a toothless, claw-less, hairless, castrated... 4-legged big land fish." 

"Woof!"

"It barked just now! Kitty heard it bark just now!" Of course, kitty's complaints fell on deaf ears. Kitty went back to training. 

After training in how not to get stomped to death by wicked humans, next was projectile training... where kitty was targeted by bullets, from handguns, to sniper rifles, to gatlings. Then, it was artillery training, where kitty was targeted by ballistae, falling missiles, homing missiles. Disaster training, where kitty had to disarm bombs, swim against a flood, survive a fall from the top of a building, survive a fall from aircraft, survive an avalanche at Mount Olympuss...

Everything was for our own good, they say, so that kitty can survive in the work-world, they say. But kitty felt... it was hell.

After a year in that hell, kitty graduated, having gone from the late levels of the second stage of the monster cultivation stages, the stage of Salvaging Enlightenment, blazed through the third stage, the stage of Honing Perception, and entered the early levels of the fourth stage, the stage of Feral Instinct. 

This miraculous cultivation speed, was just as advertised on television!

Kitty cried on the day of graduation. Whether it was tears of joy, or tears of release, even kitty did not know.
After signing a confidentiality agreement, forbidding kitty from saying anything about the kitty boot-camp, kitty was given his kitty mercenary certificate from his squad's kitty instructor. The always mean kitty instructor looked at kitty with a proud smile on at that moment. Kitty thought he was a different kitty. 
Every kitty in our kitty mercenaries-in-training squad, or at least the ones that graduated on time and didn't have to take remedial lessons, took a photo together to take home as a souvenir. Every kitty, except our kitty instructor, was crying in the photo. 

Our kitty instructor told us a few more things about the job, told us to be careful out there, and then we left. The next time Kitty would come to the Kitty Mercenary Association would be when the association has found a client for kitty. Naturally, kitty is not allowed to decline. For the next hundred years, according to contract, kitty would have to accept jobs from the Kitty Mercenary Association, in return for the torture, scratch that, training, that the association provided to kitty. Hopefully, kitty does not get a client for the next hundred years.

Officially, kitty had gotten a job. Thus, the satisfied mama kitty finally let kitty back into the house. Kitty resumed his peaceful life, of eating, sleeping, flipping through the pages of graphic novels, watching anime, and sleeping. 

The peaceful life did not last very long. Kitty got a client sooner than kitty expected. 

It was a stupid human male with a stupid smile plastered on his face.

Lena was not mad at Kris. She guessed that this was karma for her highly intense sexual desires. Luckily though, in the end, she didn't spend a lot of time horse riding. The men did their own races, everyone losing to Kris, obviously, while the woman just drank some tea and watched the men ride around.

"I had a dream." Grandma Shen spoke first. "In my dream, we were fishing. My young self with my husband. And in that dream, we caught a big fish. But we let it go. But the fish didn't go when we release it, instead, it stayed and swam around our boat in circles."

Lena continued to drink her tea but then she realized that her grandmother and mother was looking at her. She quietly placed down her cup of tea and looked at them.

"What?" She asked.

"Fish dreams usually mean that you're pregnant or someone close to you is."

"I am not pregnant!" Lena claimed.

She looked down on her stomach and touched it. She couldn't be... she just had her first intercourse a little over a week ago. And she's still on her birth controls... she couldn't be..., right? How early does one know if they are pregnant or not?

"Mother must have had a dream about me." Aunt Ma spoke.

Everyone's eye widened and looked at her.

"I am 5 weeks pregnant. We weren't going to tell everyone yet until we find out the gender."

"Aiya! Is that why you were not drinking yesterday. Sister, congratulations!" Shen Milli smiled.

"That's great news! I hope it is a girl." Grandma Shen replied.

"When are you going to find out about the gender?" Lena asked.

"Well, it has been a busy week and with the family gathering too, we didn't find the right time yet. We were going to visit the hospital after we go back home."

"That's good!" Grandma Shen was happy.

Shen Milli was also happy. She was not able to have a big family, but she was glad that Shen Yue (Aunt Ma) was able to have a big family. She was still young to have one or two more children.

"Don't tell Shen Ma yet, he wanted it to be a surprise for everyone." Aunt Ma smiled.

"The kids will be very happy to have a younger sibling." Lena added.

"I hope the triplets will be better behaved knowing that they will be older brothers."

Everyone laughed.

"Lena... when are you going to get married and start your own family. I married your uncle when I was around your age and only got lucky with two pregnancies. The triplets just made it a big number."

"I... maybe when I find what I want to do first."

"You're stepping down from LUX after the partnership release, are you not?"

"Yes. I was only helping my mother manage it for a while. There are better candidates to be president of the company."

"You're marrying Kris Li, anyways. You can follow your dreams instead of following your man's dream this time." Aunt Ma said, referring to how Lena chased Andy to business school instead of following her passion.

"Yeah."

The women talked more about clothes and fashion before it was time for dinner.

Lena had considered following her passion after leaving LUX. The original Lena had just really dreamed of being an amazing wife and stay at home mother. However, Lena... Shen Qian, pursued her major in graphic designs and arts.

Shen Qian was stuck doing web and project designs because it was a good-paying job. Well, at least before Erik fired her.... But her young self really wanted to pursue a career in graphic novels.

After dinner, everyone went to the springs. The area not only has a large natural grass field for the horses but a good part of the area had natural springs. The men went to their own area while the women stayed separated from them.

Although Lena and Kris did not spend much time together, they both enjoyed the nice little vacation. Kris had a good time with the Shen family. Of course, grandpa made sure to remember his name correctly this time and never stopped to remind Kris when the wedding date will be.

Shen Mao was saying he wanted a small wedding but Shen Ma suggested a big wedding. Shen Mo, on the other hand, was mostly silent.

Kris felt that he got along well with almost everyone... but there was just something about Shen Mo.

Everyone had left the water early. Kris left too but he came back after seeing that Shen Mo was still there.

"I thought you would be gone already. We've had stole you for the whole day, you must be missing Lena." Shen Mo spoke as Kris got back into the water.

"I miss her every second I am away from her, but it's not every day that I get to spend time with the other people she cherishes."

"Hmmm..." Shen Mo nodded. A good reply indeed.

There was a long silence as both of them sat in the water.

"I feel that you don't like me." Kris bluntly asked.

Shen Mo opened his eyes and looked at Kris. He smiled. "I don't like your family."

"I don't too."

"Good. It should stay that way."

"Why do you not like my family?"

"Some things are best if you just don't know. Like everyone else here... they can look at you and be happy with you. Every time I look at you... I see your father and your grandfather. But I don't know you. Are you your father? or your grandfather? I should not let a parent's sin be their child's."

Shen Mo got up from the water. "So I am not exactly disliking you but I am just not as accepting as the others. But don't worry, if Lena truly loves you, then there is no need for me to worry. I only hope you truly love her back."

Shen Mo started walking out but he stopped. He looked back at Kris. "There is one thing though..."

Kris looked at him.

"Be wary of the Zhao family. A Li can never trust a Zhao." And with that, Shen Mo left Kris alone in the water.

'Zhao...?' Kris try to process the words that Shen Mo spoke. There had always been tension between the Zhao and Li family... each family had always been wary of each other. 

'Hugh....' Kris looked up to the night sky. But, He can always trust Hugh.

Shen Mo said that it was better for Kris not to know... but Kris felt like he needed to know. What is his parent's sin? His family had done many horrible things... he included.... does any of them have to do with the Shen family?

Kris got up from the water and walked out. He put on his robe and walked to his room. Everyone mostly had separated room. When he opened his door, he immediately spot Lena lying on his bed, texting on her phone.

"Oh, you're finally back."

"How did you get in?" Kris asked as he closed and locked the door.

"Through the window."

"...." This was the fifth floor. And there is no balcony.... did Lena really come through the window?

"Naw... I picked the lock on the door."

"You've been watching too many movies." Kris took off his robe and put on his sleeping clothes. He crawled into bed with Lena. "You're not sleeping here right?"

"No... my mom will probably come to check on me later." Lena smiled and gave Kris a kiss. "I just wanted to see you before I sleep tonight."

Why didn't you choose the second male lead instead?! He treats you better?!

They are called the second male leads because they don't get the main female lead.

Without even approving, Lena touched it. First, she poked on it like it was some exotic species, then she gently placed her entire hand on it. He could feel her warm hand on his cold body. It sent a warm tingle throughout his body. 

"Does it hurt?" Lena asked.

"No. Pain is just an emotion in the brain. I might feel it at first, but I already learned how to avoid the pain, hiding it away."

Lena stood up, standing in front of him. "Sorry I was rude. You can see mine too."

"What? I don't want --" 

Lena lifted her shirt up a bit but he grabbed her hands to stop and pulled the shirt back down. "I don't need to see it."

"But, mine's pretty. You need to see it!"

"I really don't want to see it."

"Are you calling it ugly too?! No it's pretty, I promise!"

7 Months Later

Being a baby is awesome and frustrating at the same time. Awesome because you basically have a group of adults to wait upon you. You need food? You cry and 'Walla Walla Washington', food appears magically and stuffed in your mouth. You don't even have to lift the spoon. You feel like peeing? Or pooping? You cry and 'Hocus Pocus - Sister awokus' Even if it's the middle of the night, you have people helping you pee and poop. 
Some people would say I'm a disgusting, sickening and loathsome guy with not an ounce of self respect. Guess you're right, but I would take those insults anytime, anywhere because being waited hand and foot is definitely worth it.
Now the frustrating part is that I can;t understand shit about what's going on here. Nobody speaks English and let me tell you it's easier to pick up a language and gain fluency from a blank slate than knowing a language beforehand and trying to learn a new language. It's easier for the former because you think and speak in that very language from the get go. All your thoughts and imaginations are in that language. 
While for the latter, You first think in your original tongue, translate it and then speak in the new language. All your thought and imaginations are in your original language instinctively, which leads to less practice than the former. The only thing that is going for me is that I obviously have higher intellect than other babies as well as the amount of practice I am doing consciously. I am now good enough at speaking the local language that I can at least ask for things in two word sentences. And the lack of knowledge of the local language leads to the sheer lack of information.

I know the country I am in. I know the organization that is trying to indoctrinate me is the church of this world. Now you may say that I'm being prejudiced against them without any proof but you must understand that 90% of the churches in isekai novels are always corrupt and secret evil. 
Of course Sister Violetta can never be evil, she was probably deceived into joining the church or maybe forced to get involved. But rest assured people! When I grow up I am definitely saving her and taking her away from this place. 

And who says that I don't have proof?  You see abnormal things have been happening to me. The first thing is that I am just a teeny tiny bit too strong for a baby. I weigh about 10 kilograms. How do I know it? While on our bi-monthly outing of the orphanage to the doctor to get medical checkup and shots I secretly wiggled out of the room to explore the surrounding cause I only get to go out about once every two months and that is definitely not enough to quell my adventurous spirit. As a proud delivery truck driver that has driven on the roads of 42 states and 5 countries, staying cooped up in the same building for an year may as well be called torture. 
So here I am just outside the room and what do I see? A weighing machine! Right now anything that is new to my eyes is good enough for me to be excited about, even if it's just a weighing machine. And I did what any curious baby would do. I crawled towards it as fast as I could and got on top of it. And Viola! I weigh a solid eleven kilograms. But I didn't know whether it was normal, underweight or overweight. 
Why can't these guys paste a baby weight chart on the walls. Is that too much to do? Are they looking down on us babies? Are we not important enough? But unfortunately while I was monologuing, a Nurse spotted and swooped me away from the glorious self discovery adventure I was having. Curse you evil minions of the hospitals! And with that I was put down on the sofa among the other children which resolutely ended my adventure in the hospital.
Now  you must be thinking "Hey what relation does this pointless story have with the weird things happening around you?" Now just be calm and see how the fates have woven this thread of coincidences around me.
So you see, the church has a separate room with books about religion and other subjects. I regularly 'infiltrate' that room to gain information on the organization. Who am I kidding? I just wanted to read some picture books cause I was fucking bored. So one day while I was advancing on my stealth mission I miraculously found some books in English lying on the lowest shelf in the book room. I was so happy that I nearly cried again, which would have failed the mission right there, But I controlled myself like all excellent agents do and did not let my emotions hinder me in the way of my duty.
 I took out those books and started to read them and advance my knowledge about the organization. Apparently they were stories about how saints of this religious order were tortured some eighteen hundred years ago. Some of them had their teeth violently pulled or shattered in their mouth. Some of them roasted on grills. Some of them skinned alive, Devoured by beasts, sunk in the ocean etc etc. 

Can someone please tell me what the hell is this book? And why was it in lowest shelf where children can easily pick it up and read it? And why on earth is all the text followed by graphic pictures showcasing these people undergoing torture? Is this some kind of ploy to permanently damage the kids? 
Or maybe I finally found the reason behind this organization's objective! They want revenge for them and want to destroy the world! Or maybe rule the world with their organization as the supremo of this world and kill or enslave the rest. Hmmm, this would need some more careful investigation in their origins and history. I picked up the other books in English and started reading them. they were mostly anecdotes of the previous members of their society. the last one was just a phone directory in English. But just as I was open it I heard footsteps coming towards this direction. I grew flustered and quickly tried to put the book back in the shelf. 
Nothing abnormal right? I wish I could say the same. 
I picked up those books and ran towards the lower shelf, and that's when I realized what was wrong. I was holding a stack of books weighing about two kilograms and running with it. My mind was screaming to put them down right there cause it was very abnormal, but my body said 'cool down mate, It's easy peasy'. And followed my body cause it sounded much more friendly and ran towards a cupboard to hide behind it. Just then I heard the footsteps entering the room.
"Periklis!"
I heard sister Violetta shouting my name. But no matter how sweet she is, I stopped myself from responding reflexively and giving out my hiding place. I couldn't let them know that I had already gained some fundamental knowledge about them and had started plotting against them.
After hearing those disappearing footsteps, I came out and ran towards my room. After all I had a lot to think about. I probably have above average or extraordinary strength. It's a bit too soon to call it super powered as I have yet to punch a hole through the wall. Now the question is how did I gain it? Is the organization conducting secret experiments in us? Have I been drinking diluted super soldier serum in the form of milk? Or they have been bombarding me with Vita rays when I'm sleeping? But I haven't seen the rest of the kids doing anything beyond ordinary.
 Or were my original parents some super powered people and their one for all powers passed on to me? Maybe I'm a mutant? Or maybe this is a reincarnation bonus by some lazy god who thought it was too much trouble to meet me? So many questions and yet no one to answer. But the most important question among all of them is how to proceed with this information and what measures to take? 
I would be bluffing myself if I said that I would just live normally and peacefully from now on. I have read enough web-novels, fan-fictions and stories to know the most important principle is that 'Supernatural attracts Supernatural'. To say anything else would be a lie. Now the question is what type of role is my destiny plunging me into?

A regular human dies and is reborn in another world. Common? The world has Legendary swords, Heroes, Angels, Devils and Gods? Still common? He knows the future of the world too! It's still not uncommon? he is probably going to be super-powerful. if it's still a common story then I can't help it. an Si who is not an edgelord. Harem? Who knows?

For Zhu Jisheng and his "Back to the Old Days," there wasn't much difference between the day and the night, since he never had customers. Well, not never—there were a few loyal customers, those young lads that liked new and fascinating things. They knew a little about everything, from Angkor Wat statues to Crete Island's cave drawings. They were quite knowledgeable and seemed to accidentally on purpose show off the fact that they had no lack of money.
But in actual fact, they never bought anything. Every time they came, they expressed undying love for all the weird objects around them and would say that their wallet was a little tight before they left. They would promise the heaven and earth that they would buy what they liked the next time they came and wanted him to reserve the items for them.
But the next time they came, they had completely forgotten about the promise and picked up other objects, nothing but praises on their tongues, taking nothing but photos. They posted all of them to their WeChat moments, most likely pretending that they were rich people that owned all of these things.
This was like the popular saying online—"The poor people know how to live." Even if they couldn't afford it, they knew the best!
He didn't really mind whether they bought things or not, since they always brought some laughter and conversation to the shop.
They had come today as well, and after a whole afternoon of frolicking, they had finally left with satisfied smiles.
The antique shop had become peaceful again.
He didn't usually speak much, and every time they came, he felt like he had used up his entire week's worth of words.
The sun was setting, the alley shrouded in a dull sunset and the tempting smell of the neighbors' dinner.
"It's time to eat."
He talked to himself, turning to the kitchen in the back to cook a small pot of noodles with his tiny pot. He cut up some minced meat in the meantime, beating up two eggs, and put down some daylily, black fungus, mushrooms, garlic, thickening the sauce after passing it through oil. Adding a few more ginger and spring onions after it's done and a sprinkle of sesame oil, a bowl of aromatic, and extremely authentic Lor Mee was done. 
It was pretty hot. He changed into a thinner shirt upstairs and came back down to enjoy the delicious bowl of noodles.
Every time he ate Lor Mee, his life back in the capital seemed to flash right before his eyes. He reminisced, but he didn't miss it, because he would never return to that life. Even the old city had been drowned by the business of modernization, so there was nothing much left to miss.
He ate slowly, enjoying one bite fully, chewing it to savor ever last drop of flavor before picking up the next bite of noodles.
Something moved behind the divide.
"Come out and play," he said. "The thing you're afraid of is gone."
A white Persian with black markings on its top, back, and tail came out carefully only after nervously checking out the surroundings. It walked out, its bright eyes scanning through the shop and making sure that there was nothing dangerous around.
Looking at it, he couldn't help but pity it and feel guilty for it.
They passed the harsh winter by escaping to the south, so he'd brought it back to Binhai City. The moment they arrived, it could feel the evil enveloping the city and had warned him against it. Maybe he should have just made the decision to leave this place back then instead of leaving it in so much fear for all these days.
"Come, you should eat too." He placed a small plate on the floor, beef as thin as cicada wings on it.
He cooked a very small amount of noodles, and it was soon gone even though he ate slowly.
He was only half full, but he had no plans to eat more and stood to clean up.
"Meow."
The Persian had finished its beef too, and it licked its lips and stared at him. It wasn't full either and wanted to eat more. 
"We don't have to be completely full. The elders have reminded us, 'Control our eating and we won't fall sick. Control our desires and we will live longer.'" He smiled. "I still want to live a few more years. You too, right?"
The Persian was persuaded, and it no longer begged for food, quietly leaping onto the table and lying down on it.
He washed up quickly, wiping his hands dry, and sat at the table. He picked up his phone to look through his unread messages. Even though he's old, that didn't mean he wasn't good with technology. He was amazing at accepting new things, and the many applications he had installed on his phone were a testament to that fact.
It was only after some time that he put down his phone, his face solemn.
There was an old newspaper on the table, and the headline was the article that he had written. Before publishing it, he had read it countless times, mulling over and editing the words to convey his points and tone correctly, but it still wasn't up to his standards.
"It still sounds really rushed. If we had more time, it would be a lot better, don't you think?" He sighed, picking up the newspaper and reading the article yet again.
This was a declaration of war, the first horn to signal the assault of the traditional world of literature against internet literature. Predictably, within a few days, they had all gradually posted their responses to it—some of them on traditional media, and some of them on Weibo and their own social medias, quickly trending the topic on several sites.
In these posts, most of them were clear about supporting him with a minority still sitting on the fence, saying words that were ambiguous and unclear—most likely feeling that it was inappropriate to not say anything, yet not wanting to offend anyone. There were some that seemed to reprimand both but still supported him in reality.
But there were also some articles that clearly stated their support for internet literature. He mostly didn't know these authors. They might've just been budding authors from these last few years. But their voices were weak and held no weight in the heirarchical literary world.
"It gets harder and harder to persist in your own dream. I can't believe I still landed myself in this pool at my age." He shook his head, the heaviness in his heart pressing on his chest.
He was too rushed in writing the article, and most of what he had written was his impression of internet literature from other people's words. He knew that he should at least finish reading the stories he was criticizing before writing it so that the article would be even more specific and guiltless.
But as well as eating slow, he read slowly, too. He liked to savor and feel every single word and sentence. But to finish reading the online novels with millions of words at this speed would be impossible. He had even brought up ten different internet novels in his article whose total word count was in the tens of millions.
Reading was just like eating. If you savored something slowly, it would last longer. If you consumed it quickly, you wouldn't know what it felt or tasted like.
To read and eat slowly—this was an old teaching that one could not disobey. 
Even though he had only read a little, he had clearly seen that internet novels were just empty meals, about as nutritious as a cup of instant noodles.
One had to study, one had to know etiquette, and one had to educate their kids.
The kids today would rather read online novels than read ancient texts and learn etiquette. They only consumed instant noodles as their go-to meals. "To wake when day comes, clean up the house and keep it clean, inside and out."
To sleep when the night came and wake to study when the first streams of light came in—these were ancient teachings and his habit of many years. Unless more important things demanded his attention, he would never stray from it.
The Persian cat had been lying on the table taking a nap when he was reading the newspapers, but it seemed to suddenly detect something. Its ears twitched, and it stood up, eyes shining as it stared at the darkness past the window.
"What is it?"
He walked to the door and was about to close it before noticing its weird actions. His chest tightened. Could it be that the evil was coming back again?
There was a shadow moving on the opposite wall.
"Don't be nervous. They're just strays."
Under the light from the streetlights, he saw that it was just a few stray cats with differing fur coat patterns.
A scoff seemed to come from the wall. 
He scrunched up his brows. "Who? Who is there?"
Right then, the street lights suddenly went out. 
And just like a tsunami, the entire street and the alleys beside it were suddenly devoid of light—not just the streets, but the households too.
Something wasn't right. Streetlights were separately powered using solar power, so why would they go out at the same time?
Suddenly, a powerful hymn started on the edge of the wall. 
"Even if the soul is dead, the Qin is still around! The Zhu school of thought may be popular, but it's actually low in quality!"
"Hundreds of generations follow the Qin's rules. The 'Ten Critiques' is not a good article!"
His face instantly fell at that, his heart feeling as though someone had smashed it with a hammer. He stumbled backwards, his brain humming in shock.
"What… You dare say that the Zhu school of thought is…low in quality? Who are you? I dare you to come out here! You're just a lowlife hiding in the shadows!" he screamed at the darkness.
The voice in the shadows said, "Hiding? Then what are you? Hiding in the shadows and criticizing others? You're an expert in the Zhu school of thought. Have you never heard of Zhu Xi's saying, 'If you attack someone anonymously due to your hatred, you will be harming your descendants'?"
He could hear the threat in those words, and he could hear that the other was here for his article, "Ten Criticisms of Online Literature." But he had only told a very small group of friends where he lived, so how did they know?
"You don't have to threaten me. I have no qualms about my article. Online novels have no nutrition. I, Zhu Jisheng, will right the wrong!" He puffed out his chest, determined. Youths should be reading the classics of Confucianism, learning the teachings of legends, and striving to better the world, to serve the people!"
"Haha, you sure make it sound nice." The voice in the dark fell. "You are just pained that traditional literature is getting less and less prized, while internet literature is getting more and more popular. You don't like what the world likes—Who are you to criticize it?"
Just as his anger was about to burst out of his chest, just as his retort was about to spill from his lips, that voice started again.
"Oh, you don't have to answer."
He was stunned. Didn't have to answer what?
That voice was cold, just like the bone-chilling breeze of winter. "I know who you are! You're just a nobody!"
Even though it was just a normal word, Zhu Jisheng's heart thumped harshly, his entire chest hurting.
His pupils dilated, his sweat pouring out like rain. The most painful memory he had from tens of years ago was painfully yanked to the forefront again, pressing onto him like a Boeing 707, threatening to crush him into dust anytime.
He felt as though his body had been dunked in a pond in the peak of winter.
He thought he had long since forgotten that memory, but it had always just been repressed in the deepest recesses of his heart. If any part of it were to see the light of day, it would crush all of his dignity and glory.
"Meow!"
The one simple word didn't just cause him huge trauma. Even his Persian was trembling in fear in the corner, glaring out the window in shock. Even when facing the scariest of evils, it had never been this afraid.
"Seeing that you aren't too bad at your core, I won't press you too much. But you'd better be more careful and read internet literature without your prejudice. He couldn't support his weak body anymore. His shivering legs gave way, and he ended up with his butt on the floor, his t-shirt soaked with sweat, gasping desperately for air.
"Hey, old man, are you alright?"
After the electricity came back, a neighbor walked past, glancing over by chance and noticing the usually calm and composed old man lying on the floor with his face as white as a sheet. He came in after slight hesitation and didn't dare touch him. "Do you want me to call you an ambulance?" he asked, worried.
"No… It's okay…"
He waved his hands weakly. "I… I just tripped after the sudden blackout."
"Really?" The neighbour observed him. He didn't look like he'd just fallen, but it was the truth that there had been a blackout.
"Really, please, don't bother with me. I'm alright. I'll be better after some rest." He forced a smile.
Seeing that some color had returned to his face, the neighbor nodded, nagging some more. "If you feel unwell, call an ambulance. Don't be stubborn! If you're done resting, get up from the floor. It's too cold here."
"I got it. Thank you."
The neighbor walked out of the door, looking back occasionally to check up on him, when the voice behind him suddenly called, "Mister, right before you came in, did you hear anyone speaking?"
The neighbor pointed at him. "I only heard you talking to yourself in the shop. I was puzzled, so I came over to take a look and saw you lying on the floor."
He seemed to understand something and asked, "Mister, you only heard me speaking?"
The neighbor nodded, chuckling. "That… Don't call me 'Mister.' It sounds weird."
"Alright, I got it… Oh, right, I have another question. Sir… Do you read online novels?" he asked.
"Occasionally, but I read the pirated versions." The neighbor chuckled. "I'll be going now."
Peace returned to the shop.
He looked at the streetlight in the alley, laughing at himself. "The world's so huge, but where can we hide from strays?"

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) is an online multiplayer battle royale gamedeveloped and published by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of South Korean video game company Bluehole. The game is based on previous mods that were created by Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene for other games using the film Battle Royale for inspiration, and expanded into a standalone game under Greene's creative direction. In the game, up to one hundred players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill others while avoiding getting killed themselves. The available safe area of the game's map decreases in size over time, directing surviving players into tighter areas to force encounters. The last player or team standing wins the round.

Lead designer Brendan Greene, better known by his online handle PlayerUnknown, had previously created the ARMA 2 mod DayZ: Battle Royale, an offshoot of popular mod DayZ, and inspired by the 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale.[9][10] At the time he created DayZ: Battle Royale, around 2013, Irish-born Greene had been living in Brazil for a few years as a photographer, graphic designer, and web designer, and played video games such as Delta Force: Black Hawk Down and America's Army.[11][12] The DayZ mod caught his interest, both as a realistic military simulation and its open-ended gameplay, and started playing around with a custom server, learning programming as he went along.[11]Greene found most multiplayer first-person shooters too repetitive, considering maps small and easy to memorize. He wanted to create something with more random aspects so that players would not know what to expect, creating a high degree of replayability; this was done by creating vastly larger maps that could not be easily memorized, and using random item placement across it.[13] Greene was also inspired by an online competition for DayZ called Survivor GameZ, which featured a number of Twitch.tv and YouTube streamersfighting until only a few were left; as he was not a streamer himself, Greene wanted to create a similar game mode that anyone could play.[13] His initial efforts on this mod were more inspired by The Hunger Gamesnovels, where players would try to vie for stockpiles of weapons at a central location, but moved away from this partially to give players a better chance at survival by spreading weapons around, and also to avoid copyright issues with the novels.[10] In taking inspiration from the Battle Royale film, Greene had wanted to use square safe areas, but his inexperience in coding led him to use circular safe areas instead, which persisted to Battlegrounds.[10]

When DayZ became its own standalone title, interest in his ARMA 2 version of the Battle Royale mod trailed off, and Greene transitioned development of the mod to ARMA 3.[11] Sony Online Entertainment (now the Daybreak Game Company) had become interested in Greene's work, and brought him on as a consultant to develop on H1Z1, licensing the battle royale idea from him.[11] In February 2016, Sony Online split H1Z1 into two separate games, the survival mode H1Z1: Just Survive, and the battle royale-like H1Z1: King of the Kill, around the same time that Greene's consultation period was over.[14]

Separately, the Seoul-based studio Ginno Games, led by Chang-han Kim and who developed massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) for personal computers, was acquired and renamed Bluehole Ginno Games by Bluehole in January 2015, a major South Korean publisher of MMOs and mobile games.[15][16] Kim recognized that producing a successful game in South Korea generally meant it would be published globally, and wanted to use his team to create a successful title for personal computers that followed the same model as other mobile games published by Bluehole. He had already been excited about making a type of battle royale game after he had played DayZ, in part that the format had not caught on in Korea. He also wanted to make this through an early accessmodel and have a very limited development schedule to get the game out as quickly as possible, while treating the product as a "games as a service" model to be able to support it for many years.[15] In researching what had been done, he came across Greene's mods and reached out to him.[15] In July 2017, Bluehole partnered with social media platform Facebook to provide exclusive streaming content to Facebook's gaming channels, as part of their pushing to provide more gaming content for its users.[17]

Around the same time that Greene left Sony Online, Kim contacted and offered him the opportunity to work on a new battle royale concept. Within a week, Greene flew out to Bluehole's headquarters in Korea to discuss the options, and a few weeks later, became the creative director of Bluehole. He moved to South Korea to oversee development.[13]According to Greene, this was the first time a Korean game studio had brought aboard a foreigner for a creative director role, and while a risk, he says that his relationship with Bluehole's management is strong, allowing Greene's team to work autonomously with minimal oversight.[6] The game's main musical theme was composed by Tom Salta, who was personally selected by Green as he and the team were looking for an "orchestral electronic hybrid theme" that would give players a "huge build-up", keeping them "resolutely determined" until a match starts.[18]

Development began in early 2016 and was publicly announced that June, with plans to have the game ready within a year.[19][20] Kim served as executive producer for the game.[13]Bluehole started with a team of about 35 developers supporting Greene's work, but had expanded to 70 by June 2017.[21] Greene stated that many of these developers were voluntarily putting in longer work hours into the game due to their dedication to the project, and not by any mandate from himself or Bluehole's management.[13][22] In addition to Bluehole, Greene also credits Bohemia Interactive, the developers of ARMA and DayZ, for support with motion capture animations via their Prague studio.[22][21]

With the rapid growth of interest in the game, Bluehole spun out the entire development for Battlegrounds into Bluehole Ginno Games in September 2017, which was renamed PUBG Corporation with Kim as its chief executive officer. PUBG Corporation continued the development of the game and its marketing and growth, opening an office in the United States with plans for future ones in Europe and Japan.[23] In August 2018, PUBG Corporation launched the "Fix PUBG" campaign, acknowledging that that game by then still had several lingering bugs and other performance issues.[24] The campaign finished in November, with PUBG Corporation calling it a success as everything listed had been implemented by then.[25]

Design

Battlegrounds represents the standalone version of what Greene believes is the "final version" of the battle royale concept, incorporating the elements he had designed in previous iterations.[6][26] Faster development was possible with the game engine Unreal Engine 4, compared with ARMA and H1Z1, which were built with proprietary game engines. Greene acknowledged that implementing the size of the maps in Battlegrounds has been one of the challenges with working with Unreal, which was not designed with such maps in mind.[6][11] The game was designed as a mix between the realistic simulation of ARMA 3 and the arcade-like action focus and player accessibility of H1Z1.[5][13]

Based on Greene's experience with the genre, an island with many terrain features was picked as the first map, known as "Erangel".[10]The map design scope was to offer players many possible options for strategic and unique gameplay.[4] Some buildings and structures were designed to depict the style of the brutalist architecture of the Soviet Unionduring the 1950s. The developer team playtested architecture features and random item placement systems, looking at both how close-quarters encounters went, and for open terrain areas.[4] The goal was to optimize the right distribution and placement of weapons and gear across the map, to encourage players to make strategic decisions about how to proceed in the game without overly penalizing players who may not find weapons within the first few minutes of a round.[6]During early access, additional maps were planned, such as one set on a fictional island in the Adriatic Sea that included snow-covered Yugoslavian territories.[27][21] Greene stated that he thought the Erangel map felt disjointed despite meeting their goals for gameplay, and sought to create more unified ideas with future maps.[10]

The freefall from an airplane at the start of each match was a new feature for the genre, to encourage strategy between staying with the pack of players or seeking out one's own route for a better chance at finding good loot.[6] With the added parachute drop, Greene considered that Battlegrounds had three distinct subgames: the airdrop during which one must quickly figure out the best time to jump and where to land in relationship to the other players, the loot game of knowing where and how to gather the best possible equipment, and the combat game with other players.[28] Players who win a match are greeted with the phrase "winner winner chicken dinner", an idiom that Greene had used in his prior battle royale games and kept in Battlegrounds, which itself had origins as early as the Great Depression.[29]

Features that Greene anticipates adding include custom games and moddingsupport.[6][13] He considered modding support an essential part of the full release as, just as he had his start with mods, he wants to enable others to create variations on his game so that he can "find the next PlayerUnknown".[30] Greene also wants to incorporate the game with streaming services like Twitch.tv that would enable replays or other features amenable to treating Battlegrounds as an esport.[6][13] Greene had anticipated that Battlegrounds would develop into an esport, and this was an ultimate end goal for his development, but he wanted to let the nature of how it would play out as an esport grow naturally with the player community.[12] He also plans to introduce microtransactions to allow players to use real-world funds to purchase loot crates that provide randomly-selected cosmetic items, also known as "skins", which they can trade with other players; while Greene recognizes the issue with skin gambling, he believes that Valve has put safeguards in place to support a "skin economy" that will provide further revenue for them without concerns over gambling.[7] However, by November 2017, gray market skin gambling sites began to appear, using Battlegrounds cosmetics as virtual currency.[31] Following controversy over the use of loot boxes to offer "pay-to-win" items in other games in November 2017, the PUBG Corporation affirmed that while they will continue to add new cosmetic items rewarded by in-game crate purchases, they "will never add anything that affects the gameplay".[32] In May 2018, PUBG Corporation disabled the ability to trade skins on the Steam Marketplace as they found that players were still abusing the system by selling them for monetary value through unofficial third-party platforms.[33]

While in early access, Bluehole offered an early preview of the system by offering time-limited crates that could be purchased during the first Battlegrounds Invitations tournament during Gamescom in August 2017, with the sales from these contributing to the prize pool. Among loot from these crates are special outfits inspired by the Battle Royalemovie.[34] Greene anticipates adding a campaign mode with co-operative player support, though there would be "no serious lore" crafted for the narrative, comparing this to similar modes in Watch Dogs.[35]

The game, while in early access, has already received alternate gameplay modes created by players, determined by unenforceable rules that players agree to abide by, that have been popular with streamers. This was aided by a quiet release of custom server support to a number of influential streamers which subsequently made it into public release.[22] In one case, "Zombie Mode", all but four players pretend to be zombies, who may sometimes distinguish themselves by removing all clothing and are limited only to collecting melee weapons and consumable items, and must rush to attack the other four players, who are able to collect all gear and attempt to outrun and defeat the zombies.[36] Inspired by this mode, Greene announced plans to introduce an official zombie-based gameplay mode based on this into Battlegrounds.[37]Whereas most of the rest of the team continued to develop the core gameplay and maps, Greene is taking on the zombie mode as a near solo project, only using the assistance of the lead animator to help with the zombie animations.[21] Greene sees Battlegrounds as a platform, and would like to see more custom game types and mods developed by players for it.[11] Greene identified that some mods that he also previously worked on from ARMA 3 may become part of the Battlegrounds platform.[11]

To prevent in-game cheating, the game uses the "BattlEye" anti-cheating software, which had permanently banned over 13 million players in total by October 2018.[38][39]BattlEye indicated that 99% of all cheating software for the game was developed in China.[40
