I at times get asked for book recommendations, so here they are! 
 The books following are both fanfics and originals. I will try to get the tags as closely as I can. And I apologies in advance if I get some wrong.

I try to recommand good books on webnovel or other sites..I'm sorry if I bumped into someone who's not interested

With Hazel as their guide, the group made their way out of the castle and onto the streets of the city. It was a lot more crowded and bustling than any other place they had been to before. 
While the streets were wider, there were still more people on them, hence it was common for people to bump into one another. Something about this felt familiar to Vy, but she paid it no mind. Her focus was on getting a suitable dress. 
It did not take long before they arrived at the first shop, but before they could even enter, the staff member stationed at the door turned them away. 
"My sincerest apologies, but our shop is swarmed with customers at the moment," the staff member said as she bowed.
True to her words, the shop was packed with people taking measurements and selecting dresses. Hazel did not panic, she remained calm and simply directed them to the next shop. But Lady Luck was not on their side for all the shops they had visited turned them away. 
While Vy was certain some of the shops still had space for them, she roughly knew why they were turned away. The difference in the clothes they were wearing and that of those work by the nobles were vastly different.
Vy's outfits were not shabby or torn, but they were well travelled. She was not wearing the long flowing dresses that were trending on the high streets of the Capital. She did not wear expensive jewellery and some might say, her dragon necklace looked a little tribal. 
Hazel never once said anything, she did not see any issue with the way they were dressed. But as they were being turned away by more and more shops, it became painfully clear why they were turned away. 
Even Lycster could feel it. As they walked down yet another street, Lycster tugged on Vy's sleeve.
"Maybe we shouldn't go," he said.
Vy looked down at the young boy. He had been so excited to attend his first Ball. But the fruitless search was dampening his spirits. 
Vy stopped in her tracks and gave Lycster a smile, "We should and we must. Atleast I want to go. It would be fun and it would be a lot less fun if you and Elette weren't there."
Knowing that there was no point in walking around endlessly, Vy asked Hazel, "Hazel, must our outfits come from the appointed list of shops?"
"No, Miss Vyrena. It's just that the appointed list is recommended. And the bill payment is made from the Royal Funds," Hazel replied.
Vy nodded, "In that case, we have nothing to worry about, any shop that has what we need will do."
Looking up at the sky, it was clear that it was almost dinner time. 
"Hazel, do you have any recommendations?" Vy asked.
"Recommendations?"
"Yes, for any tailor or seamstress who would be able to make us some outfits. They don't have to be on the list."
Hazel looked a little flustered, there was something she wanted to say or ask but she held herself back. Was it rude to ask if they could afford it? Hazel was not one to judge, but Vy and her siblings did not look like they came from wealth. 
Vy seemingly sensed Hazel's discomfort. But she did not want to come across as rude either. Looking around at the shops around them, Vy noticed a shop that was serving a customer who looked strikingly familiar. 
Without any hesitation, Vy walked into the shop and was surprised to see a familiar face. 
But before she called out to him, the man realised Vy had recognized him. Something told her he did not want the people to know his real identity, so she pretended not to know him. 
"Welcome, Miss, are you looking for a dress," a bubbly girl came up to her and asked. 
"Yes, I am looking for some outfits for the Masked Ball. Would you happen to be able to recommend me some styles and fabric," Vy asked.
"Miss Vyrena… I don't mean to be rude but…" Hazel wanted to tell her how expensive these materials and outfits were going to be. 
The bubbly girl had Vy's full attention as she not only introduced herself, but also made multiple recommendations. All Hazel could do, was helplessly watch as the bubbly girl recommended fabrics and styles of dresses. 
She brought out a leather bound book, filled with various designs for Vy to pick from.
"So if you were to get this design for example, with this material and the matching shoes and jewelry pieces I mentioned, that would come out to be…" the girl took a moment to calculate the costs, "It would be about 1,400 silver coins or 28 gold coins."
Hazel gulped as sweat trickled down her forehead. The man, who had been discussing the details of his outfit with the owner of the shop, could hear the entire conversation. He did not say anything, he was interested to find out Vy's reply. 
Hazel had kept her head low the entire time, but she could not resist the urge to sneak a peek at the expressions of the guests she was looking after. She was surprised to see that there was no sign of disbelief. 
The little girl was continuously marvelled by the amazing fabric and decor of the shop, while the older boy simply listened in on the conversation without much thought. What was wrong with these people? Has it not dawned upon them just how expensive the outfit would be?
A maid like her would never be able to afford such a luxurious outfit in her lifetime, maybe not even in two lifetimes!
"Do you take transfers from Interbank," Vy asked. 
Hazel looked up at Vyrena at once. Interbank. She had heard of this place before! It was only reserved for some of the wealthiest people! 
"Oh, I will need to check that…" the girl turned over to the shop owner, who gave her a nod, "Ah yes, looks like we do!"
Vy nodded and requested for outfits for Lycster and Elette. Both of them got to pick out the outfits they liked the most, while Vy flipped through the design book that the girl had shown her. She had always wanted to get some pieces of clothing made, but she had not found the place that had the style she was looking for. 
Dotty, who had circled around the shop, looking through the fabrics alongside them, sat on Vy's shoulder as she flipped through the designs. 
<Vy?>
-Yes?-
<You do know that's King Olwin, right?> 
Dotty gave the cutest expression, easily melting anyone's heart. That brought a smile to Vy's face as she nodded. 


“Did you just reply me?”

“You can talk? You can converse with me?”

Vyrena was amazed. She knew from the memories of the host that this has never happened before. This was new.

She pondered what that meant, but she had more pressing questions.

Speaking of social issues, the differences between China and Japan were fairly abundant. China was progressing very quickly, but its sense of social responsibility wasn't keeping up with their growing extravagance. No laws were put into effect to regulate such issues, and with the increasing number of dog owners, it only served to contribute to the problem.

However, many were starting to be conscious of the problem. Both young teenagers and seniors were now getting into the habit of picking up after their dog when out on walks. If every dog owner did their part, the world would become a better place.

Having dogs as pets was more troublesome than having cats because there was so much more to be worried about. When customers were unable to decide between a cat or dog, Zhang Zian always recommended cats because they're less bothersome.

Although it's said that one can never be too courteous, Masanori Suzuhara's courtesy was too much. She positioned herself as an inferior in order to show respect, which Zhang Zian wasn't accustomed to. Why was he suddenly the superior?

"I'm terribly sorry for taking your pictures without your consent and sending it to others."

"It's okay, you don't have to apologize. I give you my consent, okay?" Zhang Zian responded.

She bowed gratefully and said, "Thank you very much for being so generous! Pardon me for intruding, I shall take my leave now."

Zhang Zian waved. "Go on, you're going to catch a cold if you keep standing out here." 

Masanori Suzuhara lightly tugged her leash. "Snoopy, let's go."

Snoopy gave the inside of the pet store another affectionate look, before running off cheerfully.

Just as her figure disappeared at the end of the street, Lu Yiyun arrived. Wang Qian and Li Kun would arrive later, as they had a long day yesterday and went home late. 

Zhang Zian brought the broom with him as he headed back into the store. He decided to clean up the second floor and leave the first floor for when Wang Qian and Li Kun turned up. He always cleaned the second floor, more so after Pi appeared, he couldn't just let anyone go up to the second floor.

"Zhi zhi!"

Pi was still seated in front of the computer typing away. Hearing Zhang Zian, it turned around and grinned at him.

"Good morning, Pi!" Zhang Zian greeted Pi.

Mentally, Pi was better, but it still lost sleep whenever it was excited. At least now, it smiled from time to time.

"How's it going Pi? How many adds now?"

At this point, he was no longer worried about the question making Pi depressed.

Pi pointed at the screen.

"9,853? Just a little more until ten thousand!" Zhang Zian exclaimed, "Pi, you're going to have ten thousand readers soon!"

"Zhi zhi!" Pi leapt off the chair and did a few somersaults.

Zian could've never imagined Pi being so energetic. The Pi that used to be depressed because its novel wasn't doing well, was gone for good.

"Zhi zhi."

Zhang Zian had wanted to sweep the floor, but Pi stopped him from leaving. Pi pointed at the screen eagerly.

"Are you saying that you want me to watch the moment the adds reach ten thousand with you?" Zian guessed.

"Zhi zhi!" Pi nodded its head.

"Okay." Zhang Zian pulled over a chair and sat down.

Today was the last day of recommendations for the "Top Choices" category. Just as Zhang Zian expected, Pi easily made it through the first round of recommendations. If everything went as planned, Pi would get through the second and third round of recommendations.

"Ding, dong!"

A QQ alert suddenly rang out from Zhang Zian's phone. He tapped the notification to take a look. It was a message from the editor whose profile picture was of a small bald monk.

Editor: 120 reading lists, how did you do it?

Zhang Zian moved the phone away from Pi's view and replied truthfully: Went to the reading list and did some advertising.

Since the night he started advertising, 120 reading list owners added Pi's novel to their reading lists and recommended it to others. Even Zhang Zian, who had started this, was in shock, let alone the editor.
 
Editor: So the owners added your novel to their reading list?

Zhang Zian: Yes.

Zian wanted to correct him, to say that the novel wasn't his since Pi was the author, but there was no way he could explain everything. Yet, it felt like he was stealing the fruits of Pi's labor.

After a brief moment of silence, the editor replied: Keep it up!

Zhang Zian: Okay.

There were no more messages from the editor. Being an editor meant that he was in charge of a few hundred books, so they didn't have much time to chat, but Zhang Zian was still excited. From this moment on, Pi was no longer just a nobody.

"Zhi zhi." Pi shook Zhang Zian's arm and pointed towards a book review, urging him to take a look.

[Killed by a Sword]: We've created a Book Group, the group ID is 513717593. The group already has a number of members. To the author, come and join us!

"A book group?" Zhang Zian mumbled.

Quite a number of readers were asking if there was a Book Group, a space to allow readers who fancy the book to converse with one another. Zhang Zian always replied on Pi's behalf, telling them that there was no group. He also had no plans on creating a group as it was never clear if anyone would join. If they created a group and no one joined, that would be awkward.

"Zhi zhi?" Pi asked what a Book Group was.

Zian briefly explained and asked, "Pi, do you want to join a Book Group?"

There was neither consent nor dissent, Pi just stared blankly at the post.

Zhang Zian knew that Pi had always been lonely ever since it came to the pet store. He was unable to stay by Pi's side all the time, and the other elfins had things they liked to do. It wouldn't be right for him to ask them to sacrifice their time to keep Pi company. Everyone had their own likes and dislikes, they might not even have fun together. Zhang Zian had been trying his best to make time for Pi, but there's only so many hours in a day, it was never enough.

"Pi, why don't we join the group?" Zhang Zian, but Pi still refused to express an opinion, lowering its head.

Zhang Zian could guess what Pi was worried about. Previously in the book review section, readers had left offensive remarks because Pi was doing well and they questioned if Pi had used any immoral means. There were readers who skimmed through the book, then made derogatory remarks, believing that they found mistakes and plot holes. Pi was worried about what it should do if such people existed in the group?

"There's nothing to worry about Pi. You need to know that only a true fans would join the group. This person seems friendly and approachable, give it a try, if you don't like it you can quit. How about it? Just treat it like you're making new friends," Zhang Zian said carefully.

Pi dazed for a moment, turned to look at Zian. His mouth opened and closed, seeming to mouth the word "friend."

Sera asked me about what is it I want to know from the books??".

I told her "I want to search about : Conversation techniques".

It looks like Sera was confused so she said: "conversation??, I know it's none of my business, but may I ask why ?".

I told her "I am going to school next month, and I am not the type who talks much with kids my age".

Sera said: "oh that's why, I mean you're so mature that people forget that your a kid sometimes😅".

I told her "that's the problem, I don't know what kids talk about".

Then Sera said: "how about we ask the books for help?".

I was a little confused, so I said: "do you mean ask those talking books??".

She said "exactly".

I was kind of excited since it was my first time, at any case Sera said: "first let's go to the Section you want to look for, you said you wanted to look for Communication stuff, right, follow me".

I followed her until she suddenly stopped and said: "Here we are".

There were so many books honestly, I still can't believe they can talk though 😅.

Any ways, Sera said: "Ann I want you to say in a clear voice [How to Communicate with kids]".

I didn't know why dose she want me to do that, but I did it any ways, any you might not believe what happened.

Over 57 books lined up in front of me, I was so surprised so I told Sera "what should I do now?".

she told me "calm down first, all you have to do is choose one of these books".

A blue book got my attention, so I reach out my hands, and a soon as I touched it all the 30 books just disappeared.

Suddenly the book talked it said: " Little girl where is your ID phone?".

I replied to him while looking at Sera "Umm..what's an ID phone if I may ask?".

The blue book replied "really Sera!, you call yourself a special escort, and you can't even remember to give the new visitor the most important device?".

Sera said: "oh my, I was about to forget that thanks for reminding me old book, any way Ann give me your left hand".

I had know idea what she wants with it, but I let her hold my hands just like she asked.

After that she said: "this will only hurt a little bit, but don't worry", and she took out a weird looking bracelet and placed it in my left hand.

Then all of a sudden I felt a little bit of pain, but don't worry, it lasted for less that half a minute, it felt like someone pinched me hard, after that some blood came out,

After that Sera took the falling blood drops and placed them inside a glass bottle, she then poured the blood drops on the bracelet, not long after the bracelet had a weird blue glow.

After all that, Sera said: "there you go, all done, now Ann click the button witch is in the middle of the bracelet".

I have know idea why, but I clicked it anyways, and then a phone appeared out of thin air, don't ask me how, because what happened has no logic behind it, so I can't explain it.

So I asked Sera "how on earth, did this phone appear, and is that the so called ID phone ??".

Sera replied "yes it's the ID phone, and it's as that old book said, it's the most important device, I can't believe I forgot it😅, I will tell you how to use it first".

I got really curious, I mean everything I saw so far is beyond amazing.

At any case Sera said: "you open it the exact same way, you open an ordinary for phone".

I of course know how to open a phone, even if I don't have my own yet, so I obviously opened it.

After that Sera said: "as you can see in the main screen, there are some questions you have to answer, if I am not mistaken, then the first question should be what's your name?".

I looked at the first question, and it indeed was what's your name?, so I told Sera "yes it is, should I enter my name here?".

Sera said "yes, you do that and then answer the next question".

I wrote my name Ann Abrigal, and moved to the next question".

Sera said "the next questions should be: How old are you?, when is your birthday?, what school do you attend? And did you enter Tecno World by Recommendations?, or did you pay money to enter?, and lastly: what is the name you want to give your phone?, in other words give a name to the ID phone  and so on...".

Ann is a kid who is only six years old she always dose what her mom tells her she is a genius and a talented kid .one day her mom tells her to win first place in an art competition in order to win a Scholarship to the most famous school St:Royal Indoor Academy .not long after that she fell in love with the art of painting after seeing a painting from a shop's window the shop Owner told Ann about the painter and gave her the painting saying that she is the chosen one what will Ann do and what will happen to Ann after taking the painting will she know more about the painter and will she be able to win the competition?

I find myself walking down the hollowed halls of this school. The walls are a natural orange wood. The floor is made of iron wood. My footsteps echo with each step in the empty passageways. Classes have already started. There are wooden cubbies along the walls to put stuff in for the students. 

As I look for my class my schedule is in my hand. Classes started two weeks ago and that's not why the GuildMaster has been in such a hurry to get me started. As it turns out he gets credit for every student he recommends/places here. Anyone in town gets credit for recommendations. 

So he is concerned someone else will get me. I find my first class. Like any school there are boring dumb classes like language, philosophy, and mathematics. Then there are the Magic classes, astrology, practical practice classes, dueling, and of course beast classes. I'm standing in front of Practical magic theory 101. I open the door.
Boom! Whoosh!
A blast of wind comes out the door and I grab onto the door frame just in time. Once it clears and I can open my eyes I see a young girl in front of the teachers desk. She has blue hair and orange skin. Her arms are out in front of her and her hair is sticking out in all directions I step farther into the doorway and look around. 

The desks are in rows rising one above the other. All the kids are hiding behind the desks books in hand. The teacher has been slammed up against the wall. Her glasses are sitting sidewards on her nose. She has lite almost white green hair and yellow skin. 

She clears her voice and says, "Thank you, Tarshic for that demonstration. Now can you tell us where you went wrong?" Tarshic says, "I used to much magic and lost control agian." Her shoulders slump. The teacher fixes her glasses and says, "That is correct. Magic is not about strength of power. It's about using the magic inside of you and controlling it with your mind. You must learn to feel how much you can use and control. You may take your seat." 

I watch as the Tarshic walks to her desk in the front row. I step into the classroom. As soon as the teacher sees me she smiles and says, "Well hello, and who might you be?" I walk up to her with my note in my hand saying, "I'm Lizeli. I'll be joining your class. 

The teacher takes the note looks at it saying, "Hello Lizeli, I'm Ms. Cloyster your teacher for  Practical magic theory 101. You can take a seat.... ." She looks around, "Ah, next to Dambtal in row three. First please show us an example of your magic." She motions for me to step up where Tarshic just left from. 

I step up and don't say anything as I raise my left arm in front of me and make about a hundred streams of Lightning come out of my hand. They twist and make a zapping sound as they come out. She claps her hand and says, "Lightning magic how wonderful."

"Now how did you make your Lightning. also can you make it come out of other parts of your body. Please explain to the class how you use your magic." I drop my hand to my side finishing my magic as I say, "I imagine light coming to the point I need to, and when I send it out magic is created." 

The teacher smiles and says, "You can take your seat." I head to my seat as she says, "Please turn your book to page 356. You will see a diagram. As you can see depending on what magic you have each magic has its own color."

"To make stronger magic you imagine magic as a certain color. Lightning for instance is yellow same with Sun magic while Wind is grey. Now in order to control the magic it's more then just sending it to the part of your body you want. It's also concentration. You need to feel how much you are using and you need judgment on how much you can control. Also when to release it and the amount. If you release it to soon to will fail to make any kind of magic. To late and you get an explosion...."

Time Skip
It took five years but I'm finally done with school. Thank God, normally school takes two years. I got three majors. Once a week I took Lennal into the town. At the beginning she hated every minute. Now she is fine and got back her confidence. Azarna is a big part of that. She's been training her for the last five years. 

Last year I finally got Lennal  to take a small course on Wind magic. She ended up adding a class on Water by herself. As far as Klunch he has been being trained to stay away from smelly stuff. He is still terrified of baths so he does everything possible not to take one, and since he has realized every time he gets smelly he gets a bath. 

He now fights his natural desires cause he hates baths even more. There has been more missing people for the last five years then normal in the city, but if nonhumans go missing its swept under the rug. So far none of the missing humans have been found. 

I spent these 5 years looking through the library I even got in the restricted section and very little has been written about the dark stones. All I've been able to unearth is the location where the power went crazy was an area naturally high in magic energy. So the question is what to do next.

There are a few things that happen worth talking about three days after I started school over 150 nonhumans went missing. This is the story of that night.

That night I headed back to the northern fields where I'd helped Maynh's team fight those wolves. Night had just fallen the field is quiet and empty. The stone cottage is dark. I land outside the door my plan is to kill the child I saw and find out about the other Elemental I saw five days ago. I am in my natural form and I walk up to the cottage. 

The wood on the door is rotting and the straw roof smells of mildew. The windows are boarded up with old boards and straw can be seen sticking out from cracks around the boards. I walk up to the door and dig my claws into the boards. It is slightly wet to the touch and slimy. My thought before I rip the door away is "This is supposed to be livable?" I rip the door off and the hinges and lock stay in the stone door frame. 

They hang limp as the rotten wood is  easily broken free. I throw the door behind me and the smell of mold fills the air from inside. I can hear rasping breath from inside and the little girl from before is standing in the bedroom door looking at me. She walks up to me and says, "Are you here to take my mommy to heaven?" 

I look at her in surprise and she comes over taking my clawed hand and guides me through the damp kitchen into the bedroom. I can hear coughing from the bed. I she leads me to it. The little girl rearranges the thin sheet across her mother saying, "Mommy the angel of death has finally come to bring you to heaven." 

The little girl coughs and I can hear the same rasping cough in the little girl just not as bad as the mother. I look down at the women in the bed. I can see the same gray skin, gray hair, pointy ears and purple eyes as the daughter. The eyes are sunken and the skin looks pasty and lighter with an unhealthy glow to it. Dried sweat can be seen on her face and she coughs once again. 

She smiles at the little girl and says, "Sweetheart can you do me a favor and leave the room. Please close the door behind you." The little girl doesn't look happy as she says, "I wanted to be here as the Angel brings you to heaven." She leaves the room and the door closes with a soft thump! The women looks up at me and says, "I've never seen anything like you."

"Can you make it fast? I have family in town so my daughter will be ok. Can you make sure my daughter don't see what you do to me? She is so young." She goes into a coughing fit that ends with a gaging noice as I reach into her chest. Her heart is withered and weak as it pumps it's last beat. I rip open her head as the blood slowly spreads across her chest. 

I pull out a peice of her brain and turn my back on her still form. Thinking better of it I turn around and let loose a blast of black flame that consumes the bed. I leave the room as the smell of burning flesh fills the air and I close the door behind me. The little girl is sitting at the wobbly table in a small chair as she kicks her feet back and forth she says, "Is Mommy gone? I want to see her. What's that smell?" 

Not saying anything I walk over to her and take her by the arm. I pull her off the chair and see mold growing on the lower legs as I pull her out the door. My flames still burn spreading where there is fuel. As I watch the flames reach the grass roof and start to consume the wood inside. I look down at the girl. She is watching the flames consume her home in surprise and I ask, "What is your name? Do you have family?" 

She crouches down in the dirt looking at her own bare feet she says, "My name is Lar. I have family in town but they are just as bad off as we are. Many are sick and I'm unsure how long before they start going to heaven as well. Will you be the one to take them there?" I look at her saying, "If you want you and your family can be my slaves and then you can leave this town forever. None of you have to go to heaven right now."

"I've even got a doctor that can help you." She looks at me and says, "Really?" I nod my head and after that she says, "I'll be your slave. Can my family come too?" She has a huge smile on her face. I tell her to wait a minute while I'm gone. I reach into my Space bag.

Inside the Bag 
I find myself once again in my room and walk into the library. I look around and see Neens reading in the corner. I walk over to her and say, "Prepare food and baths I may have people in need of a doctor coming here. Take the bag with you." She is putting down her book as I reach into the bag.

Outside the Bag 
I appear once again next to Lar. Her eyes are big and she looks like she wants to ask questions but I say, "hush." I grab her under the arms and we take flight. I tell her to keep quiet once again as we head over the walls of the city and land quietly in a dark street. I fold my wings as they vanish and I change to my shape to a human. Lar looks excited when she sees me change shape.

We walk through the empty streets. As we walk the houses look worst and worst till they look little more then wooden structures leaning up against the walls of the city and those supporting other such structures. Lar leads me down a row of these structures many don't even have doors. Lar stops in front of one that has a blanket for a door and enters saying, "Aunty wake up. Come with me. Hurry!" 

I hear movement as Lar leads a old women to the door of the shack. As I look at her I realize she is actually young but years have been hard on her and she is very sick. I look at her and say, "Hello I'm Lizeli and am prepared to take you away from here, but first you must agree to being my slave." 

The women looks me up and down and says, "Why would a human help us?" Before I can answer Lar says, "She isn't human. She brought my mommy to heaven. She's an angel of death. She even has wings." The women looks me up and down leans against Lar and says, "I'm gonna die anyway so why not sure I'll be your slave Angel of Death for what's it worth." She laughs then pulls out a crystal that has ruins across it from her pocket and puts it up to her mouth saying, "All family members report to my home. 

Bring every man, women, and child immediately." In mere minute men and women appear from all directions. Some holding crying babies. Others with kids hiding behind their legs." A young man comes forward and brings a wooden box for the women to sit on. After he helps her sit down she says, "You all know I will soon leave this world." Murmurs fill the area. 

She puts up her hand for silence. When all is quiet she continues. Pointing to me she says, "The women you see before you is my Master now. She is Lar's Master as well. I'll be going with her and you are all welcome to come with me if you so desire. I after all have nothing to loss. We are all slaves and this is a chance to leave this town behind." At the end of her speech a murmur starts again. 

After a few minutes one voice speaks up, "Who will lead us if you are gone?" The woman says, "It's not up to me. Those who join me will have our Master. Those of you who stay will have to pick a new leader." More murmurs until one young boy steps forward and says, "My name is Suza." He falls to one knee and says, "I will be your slave." 

I just watch since I didn't realize what I was getting into. I look around the gathering crowd and see at least a couple hundred Kasca standing around. More step forward after him and pledge there servitude. The crowd is getting bigger and bigger. One young man steps forward and says, "Will you really take us from this town." I nod and say, "Yes!" He smiles and bows saying, "Then I will be your slave as well." With that I watch as hundreds of people fall down to their knees saying, "I will be your slave." 

By the time all has settled over 150 people have said they would be my slave. The leader looks up at me and says, this is the northern servants quarters. We may not be slaves but it's close enough." I tell everyone to join hands. They all look at each other in confusion as they follow my orders. Then I say, "From this day forth I am your Master and you are to address me as such or there will be consequences. Remember this was your choice. With that I grab hold of the leader and reach into the bag.

Inside the Bag.
We are in a field outside of town. The new arrives all look around in confusion. The Florensin have food tables ready and there is the doctor under a make shift hospital. Neens is holding the bag. In back of neens I see the sandy bottomed pond with people waiting with towels and soap powder. As well as spunges for cleaning. On the other side of the pond others wait with clothing of all sizes. 

I take the bag from Neens and the doctor steps forward saying, "Welcome to the Lost village. I'm doctor Viser. Anyone who needs medical attention can make a line here. Others who just need a bath can line up over there." She points over to the area in front of the pond. "Those who are hungry make a line on this side of the table. Don't worry we have food for everyone." 

Most rush over to the food area they all look half starved. As I watch those who went to the doctors tent make room as the leader is led by the same young man as before to the doctor. I watch for a few minutes and once I see everything is under control I head back to the village and into Wizzal's home. I pass through the hallway and into the library. Looking around I hear Wizzal in his lab hard at work. I head into my room and as the barrier goes up I reach into the bag. 

Outside the Bag 
Those I left behind look confused as they look around for everyone who vanished. When I appear they try to ask me questions. I say nothing as pick up the bag. I grow out my wings and vanish into the night sky.

This is my first attempt at a story. Even if no one read it I am having fun. It’s a story about a women who finds herself in a world unknown. The sky is purple and the Elves hang out in the trees to the south waiting to attack and eat you alive.

This is a chapter sample 

Village 
My red wings blend well in the dark sky. This is a small village, if you can call it that, not even fifty houses. The village is on a small hill. The roofs are a light blue grass and the walls are an orange stone. There are no walls encasing the town. There are a few rows of a purple flower surrounding the village. The leafs are blue with red vines through them. These are flowers that give off a perfume that the beasts don't like. The flowers also surround part of the field that has creatures that walk on two legs. They look something like dinosaurs/large chickens with no feathers, and skin like an elephant. They are used like horses. The grass is a light blue and reaches to the forest. Not a person can be seen in the village. Not a light in any of the houses. "When darkness comes all babies should be in bed cause monsters play at night." I laugh at myself and dive. A red light lances through the sky from the column on the nearest corner of the village just missing me "Now that pisses me off," I say out loud, and let loose a black flame from my mouth. The flame hits the column. Then I let loose another. This time I hear a scream as the house I aim at bursts into flames. I blast house after house.

"Who are you really? Defeating the most rank demon beast and summoning a mythical beast, are you really human?


The demon is afraid and despair into his face that his monster is defeated easily. 


Before they about to interrogate the demon He suddenly turn into a stone and break apart in front of them. 


"What happen this is harsh… even though I hate him this is kinda harsh…"


The girl that killed his parents is crying she felt relief and wondering why it turn like this. 


Luke is look up in the sky suddenly felt someone watching him but there are none in the sky.


[Master, i felt a magical energy a feint then gone, maybe their using a tool to watch us here]


{Master are you sure about this}


"What it is Icey, there is no point with interrogating them when they turn into stone, but now im certain there's someone order them"


The four adventurers is look at him and while their looking at him at the distance he vanish suddenly in their sigh and never told his name. 


"Huh, where did he go?"


Leona searching for him and look at the place.


"That guy sucks he never told us his name and gone"


He is just vanish without saying goodbye. 


"Haha, that not a problem someday we gonna meet him and properly thank him what he did to us"

Cathy look is happy because of him they survive


"We need to get us stronger if we see him and repay him someday huh"


Leona is relief what Cathy said. That they meet him someday and thank him.


[Master do you think it's okay to leave them without saying]


"Yeah, what will I say to them exactly? More over now I show them that I can't look at them. Hopefully we can't meet them in the past"


He is running in the forest and remove his mask, codex and icey feel their master happiness and smile to his face. 


[Master your so bad at dealing with other people, saying goodbye to them is just easy]


"What are you saying we need to get home before it gets dark we don't have time saying goodbye right"


At the demon country after the battle. 


"Hmmm, what happen in your investigations? Do you find the traitor…"


The demon King spoke to the scout in the forest. 


"I'm sad to say we find him dead in the forest, your majesty"


The guys is kneeling in front of the demon king throne. In front of them is the Demon King Lucy Hellfire. The queen of the demon country. 


"What did you say, did you know who killed him?"


The queen is surprise that someone is stop the rebellion he is strong and intellectual person. So it surprised someone who can defeat him. 


"Yes, actually a human is involved in this matter, what I know is that he is living in that forest we followed him but we lost him in the deep forest, we also didn't want to pursue him because that is the territory of those two monster living in that forest"


"I see, that is a pity, then we also want to thank him properly dealing our matter to the demon country, we need to find him in that forest and get him we can't let our pride as a demon race to let a human we had debt alone"


"Yes, we sure give you a good news demon lord"


They move at their position and gone to find the boy the order of the demob lord is absolute.


In the home of Luke when he arrives at the house. 


Their are all sitting at the table and seats while their glaring at him. They all waiting for him to say something to them. 


"Uhmm, father what is this gathering? Nevermind"


Luke glare by his father if he didn't say it. He though they know the cause again a damage in the forest but that's not fault him Garm frozen then small area of the forest.

"Luke, we need you only say, Yes what will be us to say"


Pete Allen is glaring at him differently with his tears in eyes, their holding a letter between their hand and put them on the table.


"Yes?"


He suddenly answered them without saying what they are about to say with a misunderstanding. 



"Really? We are glad you such a good kid"


"That is true, we though we are gonna force you leave this house to get you a nice answer"


Luke hang his head and wondering what they are saying. He thought they know what he did and give him a lecture by coming home late his head filled with a question mark. 


"We appreciate your cooperation Luke"


They happily smiling at him while luke is had question mark to his face. 


"What are you talking about old man?"


Luke gather some strength to ask them what are they saying.


"Luke you're 16 years old right now right, and you bored in this forest also and find a path you take in the world"


"Uh-huh, what it is mom?"


"We gonna enter you in Lunaria academy, so you can get out in this forest, ahh of course Lhola will be with you so you won't be lonely without her"


"School in the academy? What academy?"


Luke is brighten while hearing that from them. He can enter again in the school. He is excited because he will experience what school have in this world.


"We'll you will know when you enter that school...what do you think?"


"Of course I'll go mom"


"Good to hear that, by the way Luke because of that we also need you to do us a favor"


Luke is looking at them while their saying what the purpose for entering him into the academy. He just wondering why are they so forceful. 


In the morning Luke is about to set his journey in the Kingdom of Lunaria to enter the school his expression had a question mark to his face. He is wondering why they gave them a letter to deliver it to someone living in the kingdom.  


"Big brother why do you had a letter in your hand?"


Lhola seems wondering because Luke is holding a 4 letter in his hand.


"Are you curious about this Letter Lhola?"


Luke is showing the letter from their parents. 


"This letter is for recommendations from the academy we gonna enter"


He showed her the letter he got from his mother but he's wondering why he had 4 letter the other 2 letter is to Roseveil Wiseman and Robert Von Hendrickson. The letter he gets from his father is the one with flowers crest on the letter. The letter gave by his mother is a crest with a chivalry crest to it folding. He feels the letter get from his mother is something inside of it. 


"Big brother, we are going to enter the same school, I'm excited and wondering what is academy looks like and the city"


Lhola is happy and high spirit while their walking in the road. Because the kingdom of Lunaria is far and their walking normally. They wondering how long it takes to walk in the kingdom. 


"Haha, you sure can't wait to go in the school(we'll I experienced to enter in my previous life,this is also the first time to get out in the forest, I can't wait to enter the school its look like I'm a normal person, what kind of school in the lunaria is it…) "


Luke is watching his little sister that excited he just forget the letter and stop thinking what is inside of it so he put it to his inventory magic. 


[Master their are people ahead of us]


"What kind of people?"


[Hmmmm, i think it's a bandit and their robbing the wagon that pass us earlier]


"I see, how many are they?"


[There headcount most likely is 20 total]


"20 huh, there are many of them we need to avoid them and not make contact"


[Are you sure master? You will turn blind the people need help? we'll of course master is cold hearted person and don't want to get involved to someone business, I know master is a bastard and nasty person but turn blind eye to the people in need is worse than an insect]


"Brother there are people in the wagon that robbing by bandits, i think they want some help"


Lhola seem see them before look try to convince her to avoid to encounter them. 


"Uhmmm, geez i think we should help them"


Luke think they be not killed if they avoid to help them but now Lhola the one first to see them so luke had no choice to help them. 


"You need to stay here and wait for my signal when you come"


At the wagon with the bandits.


"Leave your goods here and scram, miss but I think we also want you to leave here to enjoy my men and service us with your might"


The bandits leader is glaring the lady who holding the leash of the mount. 


"Leader we also find someone inside the wagon, a nice goods she is also cute"


"Hahaha, we got Lucky then that we find  ourselves a goods"


They grab the girl in the arms while grabbing her to get out in the wagon. She also wears a robe to hide her face while riding in the wagon there also some kids inside the wagon crying and shouting some help. When the girl hood remove they see an elf wearing a robe. 


"You bastards, why are you doing this to your own race robbing them and sell them as a slave are you not embarrass yourself"


"Haha, you know this is life is weak is being robbed by the strong and the weak like you is good to service us and make us feel good"


The leader hold her chin to see how cute she is.


"You bastards, do you think I'll do what you say because of this, you don't know who your dealing with"


She grit her teeth disgusted by holding her with his filthy hand to her skin. 


"Leader there is someone walking alone coming this way"


"Huh, we sure are lucky this day, you guys lets robbed him"


The bandits start to hide every corner of the forest, and their are hiding inside the wagon that stop in the road.


Luke is looking in the wagon that stop at the road while his getting near in the wagon the leader is shown himself in the corner and try to stop him from walking.


"Brat, you sure had guts walking in my territory ill will not repeat what will i say so leave your things here"


Luke is hang his head act like he didn't know what they were saying. 


"Mister, are you bandits in this area?"


"What with this kid there are no anything with him"


The leader wondering why there is nothing beside the book in his waist. Luke suddenly pull a sword to his inventory magic. 


"We got lucky guys, this kid had a storage magic to him this guy will pitch high price in the market, we need to capture him at all cost so get out of here and get him"


Their all reveal themselves and surrounded the kid in front of him. 


"Is this all the people in this no, their are left in the wagon huh"


Luke is looking all of the guys that surrounds him, and glare the one that command them. Luke look his weapon in his hand and put back to his inventory magic and get a gloves with a blade resistance. 


"This would be a great opportunity to test this, so are you ready?"


Luke stand still and all of the bandits charge at him. He uses a foot work and mixed martial arts in his previous world. Anyone get close to him is knock out and sent flying from the kick, knee, elbow and punch attack.


The girl inside the wagon seeing an incredibly hand to hand combat by her eyes, she sees everyone gets close to him is one hit they knocked down. She sees his facial expressions that he enjoys to fight them. 


"Who is he, amazing he can knock them with one hit"


"This brat is he this strong so he traveled alone, what are you doing forget to capture him just killed him already"


The one that commanding them is desperate he feels chill that he is glare at him while fighting his men. All of his men is knocked around the area and much injured by them.


"Your the last one left, surrender or die?"


Luke is glaring at him like he is not joking and scared him a little by punching him and stop half way. 


"I surrender don't killed me"


He lost balance and kneel to him surrendering, but when luke show his back to him while he kneeling to him. He attack and draw his sword. The kid is use his blade resistance glove to block his attack. 


"You not that obediently surrendering, i see"


He punched him in the face and sent him flying in the tree. 


The people in the wagon is looking outside the wagon and see him approaching them. The one that appear is the one fighting them. 


"Are you okay, i'm gonna untie you and help me to tie them, we need to hand them over in the guard"


While Luke is untie their ropes their flustered talking and seeing him that he is so kind and strong. 


"Thank you very much for saving us"


He just smile and wave in the distance to call her little sister .

I was almost late for my flight, but, luckily, I made it. I found my seat and quickly made myself comfortable. After opening my suitcase and taking out the recently bought book, there wasn't anything else to ask for. 

Ahh, I couldn't help but caress the paper's texture and breathe in the library smell. 
Books are good. They can always be with you. They don't betray. And they don't leave unless you leave them. Book is the most loyal friend.
Suddenly I felt someone staring. 

The woman, sitting beside me, was curiously looking at my lap. She was inspecting the book.

"We shouldn't judge by a cover." I said, trying to justify the ugly front illustration. It was rather bland, but what was interesting was the content after all.   

My neighbor's brows went up and soon I heard a melodious voice.

"I find that phrase a bit overused. Many say it, but it's not true. We all are at fault of doing it, aren't we? Personally, I do that quite a lot. The cover is what is seen the first moment and usually it gives the first impression. If the author can't even be bothered with his cover, why should I waste my time and read the book? Most don't have the time to open the book if it doesn't look good. Not that they can be blamed. If I don't know the author or don't have any recommendations about the writing, then having a nice appearance is the least it can do, to not get overshadowed by other trinkets on the shelves." She paused and gave me a meaningful look. "It's the same with people, don't you agree?" 

My ears were gradually getting hot and I could only hope they weren't turning red at this point. Damn, she meant me, didn't she? 
My costume got messed up and the white shirt did little in hiding wine splashes that I got this afternoon. My hair also lost its shape. I didn't have time to clean myself up, since I was already running short on time. It was either beautifying myself or missing the flight.
'Having a nice appearance is the least it can do, to not get overshadowed' That person sure knew how to hide her stings!

"Well, never would have guessed that you deliver slaps this beautifully." I chuckled. Might as well enjoy the conversation while it lasts. 
She smirked, and I found her smile rather captivating.
"Why? Because I don't look that way? Doesn't that mean you had just judged me because of my appearance? Cover, that is to say. This only prove what I said before."
While I was pondering what to say, the lady opened her laptop, and continued talking.
"Of course, there is also a title. As long as it's interesting enough, the cover might get ignored. Though I don't expect much from something with a bland guise."
 "My name is Al." I felt like it was time to introduce myself.
 "Just like I thought, boring." An ambiguous phrase sounded.
"Haha. Isn't it." I awkwardly squeezed out an answer, not knowing how to respond.
The lady chuckled. She turned he head and pointed her finger down.
"Relax, I meant the book." I too, looked down. ''Scattered Sweets''
Her words weren't referring to me?? 
She's such a tease!

The lady sensed my embarrassment and stopped talking. Soon she was typing on her laptop.
I also kept silent and started reading.

Gosh, the book is so frustrating! I got sucked into the story quickly and it's indeed fascinating. But, there is a BIG problem. The main protagonist is so dense!  Why can't I just jump inside the book and knock some sense into their head! So useless, can't you open your eyes and see that the one who killed your comrade is your guest!
Just as the storyline got exciting, my reading was interrupted.

"Mr. Al, are you okay?" 
Seems like my heavy breathing raised the concerns of the lady beside me. I turned my head to the left to face her. Seems she mistook my name for my surname, but, oh well, I don't mind. 

"Mmmm. I'm alright. Just the lead is so annoying and it's only now that the action starts." I answered slowly. I didn't want to appear rude but being interrupted on an interesting part really triggers one's temper. "Do you mind?... I'd like to continue…"

"Oh, you're at that part!" the beauty glanced at the page. "Sorry, of course, go on."

I froze.

"Wait. You read it?" 
But, didn't she judge my poor taste in literature just a moment ago?

"I only said the title was boring. I never said I haven't read it." She giggled, savoring the moment. "In fact, I finished it just yesterday. Shall I tell you who dies?"

"No!"

The lady again smirked and said that she was only kidding. Then she again turned to her laptop and we fell into silence. 
As I got fed up with the profound stupidity of one of the characters, I closed the book. Sometimes you just have to take a break. I noticed that my neighbor was resting too. Now she was admiring the view outside the window. And while she was busy looking at those funny-shaped clouds, I was admiring her.
She had smooth skin. The kind you were wondering what in the world did they do to make it that way. And her pretty eyebrows were just the right height above her eyes that were…
Looking at me.

Shoot! 

I quickly turned my head, pretending not to be flustered by the way I got caught.
"Is there something on my face?" I heard an old, cliché phrase. I wanted to answer her with something smart like, "Nah, just two beautiful eyes, a pretty nose, and those seductive lips…" Wait, did that actually sound smart?
In the end, all I could do was whimper sheepishly.
"N-nothing."
"Really?", the voice was like honey, slowly oozing from my left, "I was sure I at least had a nose, or something."
I turned my head and was suddenly met with a smiling face up close. 
"What are you…  "Gosh, that was seriously bad for my heart, that girl!
"Nothing much. Thought you might want to take a closer look."
That person! Can I just get off the plane already?

-       Why offer to buy someone a drink if you can buy them a book? 
-	Why do you like books so much?
-	 Have you ever seen it screaming at you: ‘’ Two-timer!’’ when you put it aside, and start reading another one?
-	Well, maybe you should consider dating a book then.




If you're into stories about a shameless protagonist (either male or female - both of them are bad, hoho) then this is your chance to embark on a wonderful journey. Sure thing, Alfred can be called a playboy, but can he keep up with the female lead? After all,  she's like a cactus, not letting any of his compliments close to heart. At the same time, the male lead is melting like butter in her hands.
So is this love?

"Fyuuhh..." Nathan breathed a sigh of relief after leaving his 'encountering' with the main character, Lucy.

However, Nathan is very happy to meet Fairy Tail members in reality.

In his previous life, he could only see them through manga and animation images. 

However, in this life, he can see them realistically.

Lucy has brown eyes and shoulder-length blonde hair that tied by ribbons in blue color in a small ponytail to the right side of her head with the rest of the hair loose. 

She was really beautiful even in the real life.

Even though his first meeting with Lucy did not give her a good impression. At least Lucy will remember Nathan's face at the next meeting.

The requirement to join the Fairy Tail guild is only through recommendations from members of Fairy Tail itself.

Not just anyone can join Fairy Tail, that's why the guild holds the strongest guild title in the Fiore.

So Nathan needs to try to get a recommendation to join Fairy Tail through Lucy.

Of course, giving the first impression is not enough to get recognition from a Lucy.

According to the original Fairy Tail story, in the Daybreak arc. Besides getting the true secret behind Kemu Zaleon's the "Daybreak" book, there is also one of the Golden Keys of the 12 Golden Zodiac Keys, The Maiden, Virgo in the hand of the Duke of Everlue.

After Everlue was arrested by Magic Council's soldiers, his contract with Virgo was automatically cut off.

After that, Virgo took the initiative to give her own Key to Happy without Lucy's knowledge.

Unfortunately, Happy forgot to hand over the key to Lucy.

Before that happened, Nathan had to get his hand on that Gold Key first before Happy's.

"Oh right, I have to say goodbye to Uncle Marco and little Lyla!"

It will take a quite time for Natsu's team before executing its mission.

The trio needs to go to their clients first to ask for details of the mission. 

Unknown to them, this mission was not as easy as they thought as they did not receive further information if the reward from this mission which was originally worth 200,000 suddenly increased tenfold to 2,000,000 jewels.

Even the mission was quite easy, that's to incinerate a copy of "Daybreak" that the Duke of Everlue owns.

In the client of Everlue's book, Kirby Melon's place.

Natsu, Happy and Lucy were given fear by the change in prizes which increased tenfold from the original amount.

"Tw... Two... Million!!!" the trio shouted in a row simultaneously like a train.

"What the hell!" Natsu even more pumped than ever to get started.

"My... you didn't know about the increase?" Kabi wonders why they accepted this mission without knowing the real reward?

Natsu simply ignores Kabi's question as he starts calculating the amount of the reward using his fingers,

"2.000.000!? hold on!!! if we divide it by three... argh! I can't calculate it!!!" 

"It's easy. I get 1.000.000, Natsu get 1.000.000, and the rest is Lucy's."

"You're smart Happy!!!"

"There will be nothing left for me!!!"

After saying goodbye to Marco and Lyla.

Nathan immediately headed towards The Duke of Everlue's Mansion.

The Duke of Everlue's Mansion was seemingly residing a bit out from the small city's built-up area.

Surrounding the place is a series of slander trees sitting casually on the grass, while behind it a small lake and a massive rocky formation are invisible.

Nathan was motionlessly sat hanging on a thick tree branch near Everlue's Mansion, watching Natsu's team slip into the mansion after their initial plan failed.

Their original plan was to use Lucy to posing as a maid applicant in hope of distracting Everlue.

After taking one look at Lucy, Everlue immediately spits and rejects her as he considers her "ugly".

Nathan was simply could not say anything and could only shake his head towards Everlue's ideal type.

Everlue has a rather twisted sense of beauty, viewing unattractive woman to be beautiful while declaring pretty girls such as Lucy to be ugly.

Nathan was worried about Lucy's current physiology.

She was hit several times a day.

After rejection, the team decided to execute their second plan, which is to infiltrate the mansion.

The team makes its way to roof via Happy's Aera[1] and then Natsu melts a bit of a window and opens it from the inside, allowing the trio to access the house.

Meanwhile, Nathan was still hanging on the tree branch motionlessly, watching each movement of Natsu's team move from the beginning until they made it into the house.

From the start, Nathan had no intention of interfering in their mission.

He only needed to wait until the time arrived and took the Gold Key from Everlue's hand.

He knows clearly than anyone else in this world about the flow of this case is running.

Originally, this mission can be solved easily by Natsu's team, they just need to burn the object they are looking for.

However, Lucy's passion for the author of the book they were looking for made this mission complicated and wordy.

And because of that, the true secret of the book "Daybreak" was revealed by Lucy.

Lucy realizes that there is something more to the book so she asks Natsu to buy her some time as she runs to another room to finish reading it.

Whereas, Everlue curious about the secrets the book could hold. 

As the greedy as Everlue was, he thought the secrets might be a treasure map.

With that, Everlue pits his hiring guard, Vanish Brothers against Natsu while he chases after Lucy, who runs off to learn more about the secret.

Lucy hides in a tunnel under the Everlue's mansion. 

Unfortunately, in a second she was caught up by Everlue.

Lucy and Happy work together to defeat Everlue who has the earth magic which is it very troublesome against him openly.

Lucy gave a warning to Everlue that if he let her keep the book, she would forgive him.

But Everlue simply ignored her warning.

Everlue's stubbornness forced Lucy to takes out the Gate of Giant Crab Key and summons Cancer.

Whereas, Everlue who felt being cornered and fear that book revealing about information on his corrupt business practices, he also takes out the Gate of Maiden Key and summons Virgo, who turns out be the head maid of the mansion.

However, Virgo doesn't come alone as Natsu had grabbed onto her as she was being summoned.

Shorty after, Natsu beat Virgo with one punch and Lucy cutting off Everlue's hair and therefore ultimately defeating him.

With the book acquired, the team heads back to Kabi Melon's mansion and present him the book.

However, unknown to them, someone slipped into the mansion right after they gone and headed to the tunnel under the Everlue's mansion.

Tap Tap Tap

The sound of footsteps echoed throughout the entire tunnel as the shadow of the figure gradually visible from a distance and slowly walked forward.

The figure approached Everlue who was lying on the ground and his face was battered.

Everlue's head, along with his mustache is completely shaven.

Although he was powerless, he was still able to maintain his consciousness.

Such a silly thing, Payton thought. This endless competition J.D. had with her. The man clearly spent far too much time focusing on what she was up to. It had been that way since . . . well, since as long as she could remember. Thank goodness she was above such petty nonsense.
Payton got to her office and closed her door behind her. She set her briefcase down on top of her desk and took a seat in the well-worn leather chair. How many hours had she logged in that chair? How many all-nighters had she pulled? How many weekends had she sacrificed? All in her quest to show the firm that she was partnership material—that she was the top associate in her class.
Through the glass on her door, she could see across the hall to J.D.'s office. He was already back at his own desk, in front of his computer, working. Oh, sure, like he had such important matters to tend to.
Payton pulled her laptop out of her briefcase and turned it on, ready to start her day. After all, she had very important things to focus on, too.
For starters, like how the hell she was ever going to get up at 4:30 tomorrow morning.

"I SEE YOU broke your own record."
Payton peered up from her computer as Irma walked into her office, waving the time sheets Payton had given her earlier that morning.
"I get depressed just logging in these hours," her secretary continued in an exasperated tone. "Seriously, I need to be assigned to a different associate. Someone whose weekly time sheets aren't as long as Anna Karenina."
Payton raised an eyebrow as she took the stack of time sheets from her secretary. "Let me guess—another recommendation from Oprah?"
Irma gave Payton a look that said she was treading on seriously dangerous ground. "That sounds like mocking."
"No, never," Payton assured her, trying not to grin. "I'm sure it's a wonderful book."
At least four times a year Irma made the pilgrimage out to the West Loop to sit in the audience at Harpo Studios and be in the presence of Her Holiness the Winfrey. Irma took all recommendations from the TV maven—lifestyle, literary, and otherwise—as gospel. Any comments in the negative by Payton or anyone else were strictly taboo.
Irma took a seat in front of the desk as she waited for Payton to sign off on the completed time sheets. "You'd like it. It's about a woman who's progressive for her time."
"Sounds promising," Payton said distractedly as she skimmed the printout of the hours her secretary had entered.
"Then she falls for the wrong man," Irma continued.
"That's a bit cliché, isn't it? They call this Tolstoy guy a writer?" Payton quickly scrawled her signature across the bottom of the last time sheet and handed them back to Irma.
"This 'Tolstoy guy' knows about relationships. Perhaps you could learn a thing or two from him."
Payton pretended not to hear the comment. After years of working with Irma, the two of them had developed a comfortable, familiar relationship, and she had learned that the best way to handle her secretary's not-so-subtle remarks regarding her personal life was simply to ignore them.
"You've seen the evidence of my lack of free time," Payton said, gesturing to her time sheets. "Until I'm through with this trial, I'm afraid Tolstoy will have to wait." She pointed. "But if Oprah happens to know of a book about responding to subpoenas for corporate documents, that I would be interested in."
Seeing Irma's look of warning, Payton held up her hands innocently. "I'm just saying."
"I tell you what," Irma said. "I'll hold on to the book for you. Because after this month, I suspect you'll be able to give yourself a bit of a break." She winked.
Payton turned back to her computer. Despite Irma's repeated attempts to engage her on this subject, she didn't like to talk openly about it. After all, she didn't want to jinx things. So she waved aside the remark, feigning nonchalance.
"Is something happening this month? I'm not aware of it."
Irma snorted. "Please. You've only had this month highlighted in your electronic calendar for eight years."
"I don't know what you're talking about. And stop snooping around in my calendar."
Irma rose to leave. "All right, all right, I know how you are about discussing this stuff." She headed toward the door, then paused and turned back. "I almost forgot—Mr. Gould's secretary called. He wondered if you're free to meet in his office at one thirty."
Payton quickly checked. "Works for me. Tell her that I'll come by his office then." She began entering the appointment in her daily planner when she heard her secretary call to her from the doorway.
"Um, Payton—one last thing?"
Payton looked up distractedly from her computer. "Yes?"
Irma smiled reassuringly. "You're gonna make it, you know. You've earned it. So stop being so paranoid."
Despite herself, Payton grinned. "Thanks, Irma."
Once her secretary was gone, Payton's thoughts lingered for a moment. She glanced over at the calendar on her desk.
Four weeks left. The firm's partnership decisions would be announced at the end of the month. Truth be told, she was feeling fairly hopeful about her chances of making it. She had worked hard for this—long hours, never turning down work—and now she was in the homestretch. The finish line was finally in sight.
