As Joshua's soul was being torn apart in the nightmare, Diana had used to opportunity to invade his soul world. Since Catherine had been trapped along with him, she could proceed without any obstacle in the way. Every time Joshua's form broke a bit in the dream, she would take over another part of his world. 

Diana's appearance was no longer that of a little girl. Joshua's delusions had vastly transformed her body and feeding on his soul had rapidly accelerated her growth. Her upper body vaguely looked like an adult woman, although heavily deformed. Starting from her waist, she no longer had a body. Instead, a black liquid was flowing out of her with seemingly no limit. The liquid was slowly spreading over Joshua's world and was entering the various computers that were present there. Those machines suddenly fell under Diana's control, boosting her own abilities. She had long been aware of the system that was running in Joshua's soul. If she could devour Joshua's entire world, she would gain control over Luna. She found it fitting, Diana was named after Luna, after all. 

Of course, devouring Joshua's soul was only the first phase of her plan. His soul was linked to Catherine's and already the liquid pouring out of her was bashing against the door leading to her world. If she could devour both souls, her power would be tremendous. She was sure that deep down, they would actually approve of this. After all, isn't it a parent's duty to give their child the best upbringing possible? 

Diana smiled, it was just a matter of time now. Over 80% of Joshua's soul was currently submerged in the dark liquid. However, something unexpected happened. She was about to swallow the area where Joshua's laboratory was located but the liquid suddenly met an invisible wall. She frowned and glided near that area. Soon, she arrived at the area her liquid couldn't penetrate. She carefully put her clawed hand against it but grimaced as soon as she hit the invisible surface and retracted her hand in pain. 

'What the hell is this? A remnant of Daddy's will?' she thought. 

Her many eyes put all their focus on the barrier, trying to find what was its origin. It took a moment, but they began to notice a few letters appearing faintly here and there. In the end, they all seemed to form a single word. 

'Dreams'

Inside the shack, Joshua looked at the goddess in front of him. Her words had triggered something inside him, yet he wasn't sure what. Catherine sat in front of Joshua's wretched form. She gently grabbed his head and put her face right opposite of his. Instinctively, he put his gaze away in shame. 
"Look at me!" she ordered. 
Slowly, Joshua raised his gaze and looked at her eyes. Her pupils had an unusual purple color which he couldn't help find beautiful. 
"What… do you want from me?" he asked.
"I know a man named Joshua Lockman. He's probably the smartest person I ever met. Time and time again he proved to me he had a solution for everything. I refuse to believe this is the end of your story. The Joshua I knew is much more capable than this. Please, remember who you truly are."

Remember… 
Joshua absorbed those words without being sure of what they meant. Still, it was an order coming from a goddess. He could hardly refuse. If anything, it was probably worth it just to keep looking at the beautiful gaze of her eyes. That gaze… He knew of it… A long time ago he had met someone with a similar look in his eyes.   
Suddenly, the scene around them changed. They were still in the shack but two figures had joined them. Joshua recognized one of them as his teenage self. The other was a figure that had no place in a nightmare but a special place in his heart. They were engaged in a never-ending conversation. The subject kept varying, they talked about science, philosophy, art,. . .  How could he have forgotten this? Instinctively, Joshua's mouth began to move, mimicking the words his teenage self were saying. At first, he was repeating them with a slight delay, but soon he caught up to his younger version and even began talking before he did. 

After what seemed to be hours, their talk finally came to an end. Young Joshua gave the man some money and the old man promised to repay him someday. 


The scene changed again. A now adult Joshua was standing in the shack. His appearance was a mess, not unlike the wretched form that was observing the scene along with Catherine. Joshua was holding a knife with his right hand but any expression of despair had vanished from his face. Instead, he was watching at his phone in an incredulous way. I appeared he was watching an interview during a news broadcast. The spectators didn't see the screen but they recognized the voice of the man answering the questions. It was the same old man as in the previous scene. 

"In the darkest phase of my life, I lost everything. Yet, I never gave up as I believed in my own abilities. However, success would not have been possible without a helping hand. I had the pleasure of meeting a remarkable young man who gave me the little push I needed to set me right back on track. His name? Well, I won't spoil the surprise. Someone of his caliber will be known around the whole world soon enough. In the end, all you need is someone believing in you and trust me, I believe he will surprise all of us very soon."

Those words of praise seemed to hit their mark on both Joshua's. The memory dropped the knife on the ground and began laughing and sobbing at the same time while Joshua's soul form stopped deteriorating. Instead, his expression altered relief and anger. 
"Who dared to erase this from my mind?" he said out loud. 
Joshua felt a warm pressure on his shoulder, turned his head and saw the goddess smiling at him. No, he should call her by name. 

"Catherine, I'm sorry for dragging you into this," he said.
"You're finally remembering me, took you long enough," she answered. 

Before he could answer, a new scene appeared. In the scene, Joshua appeared to be in the waiting room of a high-class company building. He was wearing a neat suit as well as a pair of unusual glasses. He was busy typing on a laptop sitting on his lap. Even when his fingers weren't touching the keyboard, his hands trembling. 
"Come on, I can do this, the system works perfectly!" he kept telling himself. 
A woman appeared in the room and told him: 
"Mr. Lockman, the committee is ready."
Joshua swallowed his saliva and nodded. 
"Thank you."
He followed the woman in a meeting room. There were about a dozen people there waiting for him. He politely greeted them but seeing all those serious gazes looking at him made him feel terrified. Nevertheless, he had to press on. The chairman of the committee began to speak:
"Mr. Lockman, we invited you here today due to the video and documents you sent us regarding the artificial intelligence chip you've been developing. While the project seems promising, many of our engineers looked at it and believe it to be a mere fantasy. You do, however, claim to have a working prototype of your project. Could you please demonstrate it to us?" 

Joshua nodded and carefully began his explanation. The version of Luna installed in the pair of glasses he was carrying wasn't a finished product but it was competent enough to help him with the presentation and suggest how to reply to the various questions he was asked. 
He used his laptop to show them several slides containing bullet points of information before handing the chairman the second prototype he had prepared so he could test the technology himself. What should have been a short presentation ended lasting over two hours as everyone on the table wanted to try out the system. In the end, everyone was enthusiastic about Luna and the chairman ended up saying: 
"Mr. Lockman, your prototype is very convincing and could without a doubt revolutionize the market once finished. We would be honored if you accepted to work with us in order to make that a reality." 
"O-of course! I accept!" Joshua replied with no hesitation. 
"Good! This will require a big team and, of course, you'll be in charge of the project. We'll set up another meeting in a few days so we can over the details. Is that all right with you?" 
Joshua nodded and the meeting ended soon after. 
As he exited the building Joshua removed the pair of glasses he was wearing and looked at it while smiling. 
"Me leading a team? I did it! Thanks to Luna, I finally look human enough to function normally!" 

The scene ended and the Joshua left out a sigh. 
"Catherine… I'm sorry, you deserved better than this," he told her.
Catherine looked at him confused and asked:
"What do you mean?"
"The day you summoned your guardian. You were supposed to get a great spirit to partner up with you and were disappointed you ended with a mere human. But as you can see now, I didn't even qualify to be referred to as a human being, did I? Without Luna, I'm nothing. "

He had barely finished pronouncing those words that he was slapped in the face. 
"How can someone as smart as you say such stupid things?"  
"But. . . you've seen what kind of pathetic person I am." 
"I suppose you're right, the way you're looking at for the moment is truly pathetic. Where did all your brilliance go? That bizarre humor of yours? Your endless creativity? Indeed, if I remove those things that make you a wonderful being, then yes, you would be a piece of trash. But that's not who you are. You're my soul guardian. Show some freaking pride in your accomplishments!"

Before he could reply, Catherine suddenly leaned forward and kissed his lips. From Joshua's perspective, this really came out of nowhere and he didn't know how to react. He just stared at Catherine looking like an idiot. 

Catherine put her hand against his cheek. 
"Seriously, you made me a promise. You said that if an obstacle appeared in our way we would solve it together. That works both ways, not only when I face an issue.  I know, this entire situation scared you a lot. But you can trust me, I will never turn my back on you. I believe that Joshua Lockman is a man capable of accomplishing impossible feats as long as he put his mind to it. And so should you." 

Joshua took a step back and almost fell over. What just happened slowly sank into him.

Diana was getting frustrated by the barrier. Dreams? Such a word made her laugh. She was a nightmare, she would crush those and feed on the shattered ambition that came from them. She kept attacking the barrier, it would collapse soon enough and with that, she would devour the remaining of Joshua's soul. 

Suddenly, a bright light appeared above Joshua's lab. Like a falling star, it smashed on the ground, creating a lot of smoke. Diana frowned. Was this a desperate attempt of her dear Daddy?  It was located on the other side of the barrier so Diana had to wait for the smoke to disperse before she could see what just landed. When it finally happened, she couldn't help but look confused. Having fed on Joshua's soul, she had a vague idea of what this was but… 

On the previously empty area, an enormous statue had appeared. It was a female figure, dressed in clothes that seemed to come straight from the Antiquity. An Earthian historian examining the statue would probably think it was designed to portray a Greek divinity like Athena or Aphrodite. But seeing the statue, Diana couldn't help to think:
'Mommy?'

Catherine was observing Joshua, waiting for his next reaction. She was extremely worried about him but had opted to be harsh with her words. After having known Joshua and his crazy antiques for so long, she couldn't stand seeing him like this. 
'Come on, stand up proudly,' she thought. 

However, instead, he knelt in front of her. She feared he had given up, but she saw that his soul form gradually began to restore itself. She was relieved and waited a few minutes for his appearance to look normal again. 

"Feeling better?" she asked. 
"Catherine, you know I've never been a religious person," he replied. 
"Hmm, what?" 
Still kneeling, he grabbed her hand and kissed it. 
"However, I believe I finally found a goddess worth believing in," he added smiling. 
"Huh?" Not expecting such a reply, Catherine couldn't help but blush a bit. 
"Now, my dearest Lady, let's get the hell out of here. We have too much left to accomplish than to languish on the boulevard of broken dreams." 
Catherine smiled at him and replied: 
"So, Mr. Genius is back? Do me a favor and just blow this place up in pieces."

So what does that mean? 

For published volumes, I will have to gradually remove them from the free sites they're being hosted on. However, I'm allowed to give out review copies.   Seraph raised his head trying to find the voice, the effort exhausting as he peered into the darkness, not seeing anything and shook his head in frustration trying to clear his thoughts. Over the past few weeks, he had struggled to maintain his sanity, imaging many voices and conversations.  Plagued by illusions. The lack of contact with anyone else slowly driving him insane from isolation.

 From the other side of the room, Seraph heard the snap of two fingers as a blue flame appeared in the hands of a demon.  "Perhaps you didn't hear me, little brother.  You owe me a soul, andI've come to collect on your debt." Said Beezelbub, the Harlequin Demon Prince, his low as the words stalled in the frozen air, fixing Seraph with a look of malicious mirth, seeming to enjoy the pitiful sight of the imprisoned man.

  Returning the look, Seraph stared into the eyes of the demon, the effort of raising his head leaving him more tired and exhausted then he was before.  The very effort of trying to lift himself up taxing all of his strength, as the iron restraints that bound him and shackled him to the wall hindered his movements and weighed him down.  In a broken voice, Seraph responded, his words raspy and dry. "I had wondered if you would come for me Beezlebub.  I was uncertain if these walls of my prison would stop you.  I have nothing to give you, I cannot pay the debt. I've no power here to collect. My hands are figuratively and literally restrained." 

"The payment of debts has its own rules Seraph that must be repaid. You should know that better than most. I wouldn't say there's not anything you can do for me Seraph.  I can still gain plenty from you." Replied the Demon Price as he stepped forward, the light in his upraised hand illuminating his face, showing the yellowed teeth running over with saliva that dripped down onto the edges of his Harlequin outfit, staining where it landed. 

  "So what then demon?" Asked Seraph wearily, letting his head slump down trying to find a moment of rest before the chains forced him back up and stole it from him. "You're going to do what?  Take my soul instead?  Kill me? Do what you want demon, it would be a favor."  

The demon snarled. "Self-pity is not a good look on you genocider." Replied the demon in harsh critique. "I have seen the same thing that all of those who have condemned you have seen.  Your hands are stained with more blood then my own.  I've seen what your capible of, what you are, and what you can become. I am willing to negotiate alternative terms of your debt to me" 

Seraph said nothing in response, angering the demon prince. "You stand there, sullen and angry, yet you do nothing. You do nothing knowing this world is doomed without you, and yet what do you do?  You choose now to fall into a depressive malaise and the trap of self-pity?  No little brother.  I refuse to accept that. You will do so much more than that, I demand it." 

"I'm not going to help you destroy this world demon. I won't trade one monster for another, one end for another." Resisted Seraph as he rebuked the demon.  

"Why?  Because I'm a demon and demons are evil. Don't be so simple little brother.  My motives are pure. I crave that which I desire, vengeance and retribution. Everything ends if humanity loses the game, everything, and for my brothers and I, we would be banished back to the formless void to wait for eons for another world to form before we can venture forth again.  My motives are pure, I look out for myself." The demon snapped bitterly.

The demon walked forward, removed a glove from its hand as tiny bells rang, and grasping Seraphs chains with the uncovered hand, inspecting the links in the chain for weaknesses and flaws.  Eventually finding whatever it had been looking for and channeled power through its hands, melting down the metal even as the heat burned Seraph's skin and caused the room to mist up. 

Without the restraints to hold him up, Seraph fell to the ground..  In his state of perpetual exhaustion, he lacked the strength to stand, collapsing on his hands and knees. "Why did you free me a demon?  What's your goal.  Why are you helping me?"

The demon looked at Seraph oddly before replying. "I have the same goal as every living, breathing thing. I want to live and live well. Tell me Seraph, when you wield a weapon, do you clean it after use?  Do you polish the blade and clean the rifle? Or do you let your tools languish and rust just because you can't or don't use them currently?  You are the same to me." 

"Well, I guess thank you for saving me, but I find it hard to believe its that simple.  You'll have to forgive me if I still think you have an ulterior motive." Replied Seraph as he felt his body rapidly gaining strength, finally removed from his restraints. 

"Of course I have an ulterior motive Seraph, I'm a demon. But I don't desire the end of the world, neither do I desire Hell on Earth or whatever other fantasy about the evil you humans have concocted. I want you to join us, not as this human you are, but as your true self, the Angel of Darkness, the Black Seraph.  Even now I can see vestiges of your true self peaking through this disguise you wear.  We want you to ascend and join the ranks of Demon Princes, and when this game is over, rule the world alongside us." Explained  the Demon Prince as it walked towards the center of the room and began to disappear.  

It's last words as it vanished were "By helping you, we help ourselves." 

Where it had been, a set of heavy armor dropped, dark and swirling with images of the profane and a large spear with a black obsidian head.  Without waiting for instructions, Seraph put the armor plate on and tested the balance of the spear. "Perfect," He said out loud as the door to his cell opened.

Alright, boy-ohs and girlies, I've tried my best, I really have, but writing is way harder than I could have ever imagined. I'm at 216 chapter, 218 if you count *******, and about 90-95% of the story has been written without much consideration for outlining. A while ago, I started a wiki for the novel to try to keep track of everything and only now am I starting to understand the magnitude of the mistakes I've made writing up to this point.

Anyway, the announcement this time is to let you know that my writing pace hasn't simply slowed. I'm just taking the majority of my time chronicling everything that's happened and will happen and thinking up solutions to the problems that I've detected in the logic of the story; or plotholes. I'll probably take a while and until I'm confident in where the story will head, I'll continue putting out a depressingly low number of chapters every week.

It feels wrong to not say anything and even worse keeping my ******* collecting despite the obvious downgrade to my writing speed. So, despite my obvious bias in wanting to keep Patreons, I'd caution everyone supporting me to only continue doing so if you're fine with the current situation. Webnovel, Royalroad and my ******* all keep publishing dates on the chapters I release, so you can keep track of my writing speed by looking there; until you feel it's worth it, reconsider wasting your time or money during these unstable times. I probably should have made this announcement sooner, considering the downgrade to my writing speed has been around for a month's worth of time, so I apologize.

I'll be putting out chapters when I can, but the majority of my focus right now is revisiting already published chapters, touching them up and documenting whatever I can in the novel's wiki page. Anyone wondering where I'm at can check the wiki page and even contribute if they're bored enough. That is all for now~

UPDATE (December 29th, 2019)
Alright, I'm about to get really real and admit to being a really shitty author these last three to four months. Truth be told, I really did want to take time to update the wiki and figure out how to handle what I thought were this novel's biggest failings in plot holes. However, to do that and find details that might have only been mentioned in passing, I had to eventually turn to rereading entire chapters.

Guys... I'm being as sincere as I possibly can right now. I have no fucking clue how I've developed a following after rereading the first couple chapters. I understand that authors can grow a lot after a year, but it hasn't even been that long and I believe the first hundred chapters are Trash with a capital T. It's borderline unreadable (upon proofreading this tirade, this might be a mild exaggeration, but it is true to my thoughts nonetheless) and the fact that I have nearly 4,000 followers after combining the collections on Webnovel with those following on RoyalRoad is incomprehensible to me. There are still even 19 people supporting me on ******* when I haven't released squat in nearly two months!

I've tried to ignore this. I've tried to work on other books. Hell I've even messed around with fanfiction, hoping to one day wake up and see everyone gone. Like the book had never existed. But like I said, there are still 4,000 people waiting for releases. More joining by the day and people still supporting the novel with spirits stones. Even 19 who value two chapters being at least a dollar.

Every time I think I'm ready to move on, ready to completely shut down the novel to start a new one, I think about those people and realize, "I'm a fucking bitch. Just finish the fucking novel, idiot." The passing of time has only made the feeling worse, so I guess this is a message consigning myself to completing this book, by any means necessary. I won't be able to focus on another story otherwise, so this update is more for me than for my audience.

That being said, the reason I felt inclined to give up on the novel in the first place was because of how terrible I found my writing from a nearly a year ago. So, I want to stress that I'm not going chuck a bunch of shit together to finish the story. Rather, I'm going to go back and rewrite things as I continue to catalogue things on the wiki.

Last couple things I want to quickly mention:

- I haven't really used any of the money I've made on ******* so I want to commission a legit book cover. Ditch that shit I made with my lacking Photoshop Skills...

-More on the money thing, after I finish rewriting the novel — it'll mostly be editing details that make the book seem less like it was written by an amateur, so the story progression won't at all change — I plan on also hiring people to format Book 1 and eventually Book 2 into legit e-reader and paperback formats. I know, I know...

"Greedy author, have you no shame?" 

Honestly, I want to follow pirate aba's style of keeping everything free, and I will. I'm not going to enter a contract with Webnovel or paywall chapters through kindle. However, for the people who for whatever reason want to have a kindle or physical copy of this (current dumpster fire of a) novel, I want it to at least be possible. There's also the benefit of gaining new readers through Amazon this way which is always a plus. 

Like the G.O.A.T. pirate aba — check out her (I think it's a her) book The Wandering Inn — I'll keep all the chapters on Webnovel and Royalroad free. Though the ******* thing will still be in effect at least until I finish the series or whatever.

-Since I'm rewriting the novel for the most part, I'll make more announcements as I continue updating the novel; meaning adding on to the story (Chapter 219, 220, etc...)

Unless it becomes too annoying and people request against it, I'll be adding "Revised" to Chapters that have been, well... revised.

-I'm going to be having some polls on RoyalRoad on a couple important things as I start getting back into the grind of updating this novel.

Namely: Should I change the name of the novel? If so, to what? What would you guys like the book cover to look like? Should I change the name of the Books/Arcs?

Her words were real, they were pure and genuine. It wasn't a simple thanks. It was painful as I began to kindle to her embrace, free from my immobilization, I hugged her back. This place had made us suffer more than ever before. She was me, and I was her... but all good things end. Just as her arms had quickly tightened around me, holding me in a comforting embrace... her grip lessened. Her arms which had granted me temporary alleviation fell to her sides...

The connection we had built over the months of isolation, the fear we shared, I had grown very attached to this other-self. For all I did, I did miss those who I left behind. Damn, even the ancient English teacher. Everything was easier and simpler back then, yet through all that had changed. The only thing that had been a constant was this other-self. She had suffered with me. We had relished together. We had slowly become one...

My eyes met hers, my thoughts lingering in my mind, without her mouth opening, I heard her last words to me, in a booming voice which filled the very air around it, "Eden for the place that bore you. Eve for that which was beautiful with all its branches, for which fire could not consume. A name for the ancestors, a name for the newly born, a name for something new... A name of fire."

The words drained her of whatever had been pushing her forward, whatever had been tying her to me. The eye's which had caught my own dropped. The faltering of her gaze continued along her body, her human shell began to wilt as it slowly flaked away. Piece by piece, part by part, she disintegrated into a series of bits, an impossible wind carried away whatever she had been, whoever she had been. She was gone... 

In her absence, I felt cold... before I knew it, I was once again lying on the makeshift mattress. The pantheon of stars outside the cave dazzling in a vibrant display. The stars knew, they were delighted. Oblivious to the star's parade, only a single word rested precariously on my mind, "Eve".

I stayed on the ground for a few hours, the drive which had pushed me forward... had disappeared. She had disappeared.

With the break of dawn and the glittering of the glossy cave walls, I stood up. I wouldn't let myself end here. I had to carry on. If I had to go through hell, I'd make it back. I won't die here...
