Pada tahun 20XX, sebuah perusaha'an game terbesar berhasil membuat sebuah terobosan baru. Game yang selalu dinantikan oleh para gamers di seluruh dunia, yaitu Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online, atau biasa di sebut dengan VRMMO, akhirnya tercipta.
Free World Online, adalah game VRMMO pertama yang bertemakan dunia yang bebas tanpa hukum.

The entry to the trail of worlds resided on the second floor of the academy building. On the way, Flora crammed as much knowledge as she could into the grinning Eddie.
"I summarize: Stats are great, get higher ones. Don't level until I know what to do, and AIs are my friends?" 
"You got it, dear!"
"Weren't we of the opinion that they take over the world and enslave humanity?"
"Shush! AIs are our friends."
"But I spend all my money on my lair! There's nothing left for an artificial friend to curb my loneliness! This daily limit is gruesome. We are old and rich. We should be allowed to waste the inheritance of our children!"
Flora tried to remit him 5000 VirDos, but the System only allowed her to transfer 1000. 
"Thanks, I pay you back with RL Money!" Eddie paused. "The blue window says no. Oh well, back to the good old times where I'm a kept innocent boy getting spoiled by old women!"
"Nice! Follow me, Boy Toy!" Smirking, Flora swaggered away.

After entering together through a portal, Flora found herself alone in a circular room.
Before she had even time to get confused, a window popped up.
"Do you want to join Shiny Frenemy's party?"
After confirming, Eddie appeared next to her. 
The lights dimmed. Stars and the sun started to appear. Then, behind the sun, a blue planet rotated into view.
Flora shuddered. Experiencing the space through the shuttle window wasn't that different than watching 2001 space odyssey on TV, but standing in the middle of a lot of nothing surrounded by glowing objects left an impression. 
"Awesome!" Eddie whispered.
Next, the floor under her feet vanished. Flora felt herself moving into the direction of the planet. Of course, there was no wind or gravity, but still, she felt a pull from the planet.
Flora took deep breaths and slowly exhaled.
"Stop the flight, please. I need a moment to adjust."
"What? The fun just began!"
The pulling sensation stopped. The inertia carried her along, but Flora noticed that she could control her flight with her willpower or maybe magic.  
"And why can you regulate this experience?"
"Because the AIs are my friends." Then Flora ignored Eddie and assessed the situation. "I can breathe. That's good. I'm not freezing. Great! I'm flying through space, which doesn't fit together with the first two observations, but I'm not complaining about not dying."
"Don't think, just feel!" Eddie somersaulted in slow motion.
The planet still moved in her direction, and Flora realized what had put her knickers in a twist: It was too fast, and it had no moon. While she was fighting to get a grip on herself, a quarter of a year had passed, at least according to the movement of the planet.  
Now that she knew why her instincts screamed 'something is wrong' she was able to relax and look around. 
Flora saw even fewer stars than at night, maybe because of light pollution of the sun, nor other planets.
Of course, she related her observations to Eddie, who chuckled. If he let overly detailed comments spoil his mood, he wouldn't be friends with Flora.
"Thank you. We can resume the journey."
Orchestral music did its best to create a majestic mood but was wasted on Flora, who started to get impatient.
"Feel free to speed up."
"They forgot to add the clouds, as well," Flora added as the planet got nearer and nearer. Now, she could distinguish the different landmasses, the Americas, Africa, Eurasia, and another continent in the pacific. She was pretty sure that she never learned about it in geography. 
"Welcome to the Metaworld!" said a sonorous voice.
"Thank you, how may we call you?" 
"I'm the Trail of Worlds."
"This is slightly awkward. We have a quest to walk you." Flora imagined a dog leash with a mini solar system on the other end and her waiting next to tree until it finished its business.
"Do you think it pees Meteorshowers?" Flora asked Eddie.
"Joining you was the best decision ever!"   
"Another option would be trampling all over the poor AI. I neither want to do that!" 
"You are currently on the Trail of Worlds. No trampling necessary, thank you." The voice answered wryly, which send Eddie into another 'rolling on the air laughing' fit. 
Flora looked at her feet. They were a few kilometers above Europe.
"Alright. You would know best."
The Trail of Worlds told them about the Metaworld. Both entered it via the nearest node of their home country, which had been Frankfurt. 
Users built everything besides the portals and the plaza they were standing on. An exception to this rule was the island Pacifica. There resided the gateways to the other worlds and Cities created by CentralTank.
The continent under them came closer. 
She knew that from the context, she was zeroing in on Frankfurt, but she didn't recognize any country marks but the Rhine and maybe the river Main if their target was Frankfurt. Without any cities and the Autobahn, it was difficult to get one's bearings.
The skyline of the approaching city looked nothing like the Frankfurt she knew. The flight stopped with her hovering above the diamond-shaped plaza she had entered the Metaworld last Saturday. 
"Well, I recognize nothing from the real world." 
"I believe this could be the Roemer." Eddie speculated and pointed at a historic pink house. "Could you show us Berlin or London or Paris?"
The Trail of Worlds acquitted. In Berlin, they landed at the Brandenburger Tor, in London on Trafalgar Square, and in Paris in front of the Eiffel tower.
Flora watched out for other landmarks, especially London was full of them with the Big Ben, the London Bridge, the London Eye, and the Buckingham Palace but spotted none of them. There was a prominent tower, but it looked more like Big Ben's illegitimate child with a 22nd century UFO landing pad than a clocktower.
Flora wouldn't have thought it possible, but in this world, big companies and their logos and advertisement were even more pronounced than in the RL. 
She spotted SAPling Palace and Daimeler District. Eddie pointed out Teutsche Delekom Magenta Castle ('My eyes!'), and the E.off Estate. 
"So, I can build whatever wherever I want if another building doesn't occupy the place?" Flora asked.
"And if nobody bought the land before you and it is within your home country." 
"I want a treasure island!" Eddie interjected.
"I want a factory!"
"You can build your factory on my treasure island. Not only to produce the treasure but also to blow smoke out of the eye sockets of my skull-shaped lair!"
"Great, let's make it cyborg skull, I want a lot of pipes and blinking lights as well."
Next, the Trail of Worlds told them about scenarios and the Metaworld TV. She already knew about the first. The second was where multiple TV Channels with news about the Cetviwos and view on-demand channels with movies and series produced in the Cetviwos. Most of the programs could not only be watched like TV but had a port-in-the-scene function. Here you entered the movie set and could ghost around. 
Of course, experios for the main characters were the most popular feature.
Eddie asked further questions about the TV features. He had worked as an actor and later as a moderator on a shopping channel. Back then, he had met Flora at a launch party when they included a line of Flora's household appliances in their program. 
"We might have to add a film studio on the island." Flora grinned, and Eddie flashed her thumbs up before he resumed with his questions.
Afterward followed a series of sponsored clips for a multitude of activities. Flora instructed Aidan to remind her of some, while Eddie commented on the quality of the presentation.

"Are you ready for the next worlds?"
"Sure!" They both nodded.
The Trail of Worlds whisked them to Pacifica.
"This is the Tourist Triangle, the hub for the gateways to the tourism worlds! You can access the tourist words via every node and gateway, but here you can find quests, special offers, and information about events."
Flora flew a slowly around the plaza. Between the big gateways, people mingled, and vendors praised their wares. 
Neon signs surrounded the glowing arcs. "Today 50% off all horror houses" at the gateway to the Amusement Park world, "Buy one, get two jetski rides!" at the Water-World and "Triceratops Travels - Experience the Cretaceous Period on a groovy ride!" at the Paleo Planet portal.
The Trail of Worlds said a few sentences to every world, and Flora communicated with Eddie and Aidan about which she wanted to take a closer look.
"You may choose a world each for a sneak peek." 
"I want to see the No Humans Planet. Especially, the region where on Earth Netherland is located. Without dikes, the area is probably underwater. On the other hand, it probably depends how much the developers attribute climate change to human influences.
Maybe Egypt is a better example. People used the power of the Nile for over 6000 years. Probably longer." Flora couldn't wrap her head around the concept of a planet based on the Earth in the current era but without any humans. 
They took flight over breathtaking mountains, soaring with eagles. Packs of wolfs roamed majestic woods, and schools of orcas jumped through the clear water. 
Gradually, Flora's frown grew deeper. The reason for her displeasure wasn't solely because of the lack of toasters. But she felt that the construction of the planet wanted to shove some anti-humanity propaganda down her throat.
"What happens when I build a cottage?"  
"We reset the whole planet every week. Then, all traces of the tourists will be extinguished."
Flora snorted. "We can leave now. This is no place for engineers."
"Nor for artists. For inspiration, maybe, but what is inspiration without actualization?" Eddie added.
"Yes, and it feels artificial without being art. Please choose a better world than me."

Eddie decided on the Water World. 
The Trail of Worlds showed them the longest waterslide in the Cetviwos with 23 km, the sky falls, a whole region with nothing but waterfalls, furthermore underwater cities, and boat cities. Over the entire planet, no natural surface but water existed. They even build floating islands with swimming pools.
After visiting the ice palaces on the north pole, they left the world, and Flora congratulated Eddie on a choice well made. She saw several fascinating sights she wanted to explore in more detail.  

Next, the Trail of Worlds showed them the hub for the entries to the game worlds. 
"The Cetviwos offer a place for every game humankind has ever imagined. Some of these games occupy whole universes like the Space-Game or at least multiple planets like the Merc-Game or the KingdomBuilding-Game." 
Flora spotted an advertisement for "Manchester Allstars vs. Bavaria Munich - 20:00:00 CUT - Finest Football." next to gateway 'Sports and Boards' and pointed it out to Eddie, who wrinkled his nose. No respectable hipster would ever support Bavaria Munich.
"Milady, Tricky Beach is in this world."
"What? But I beamed directly from my lair to it."
"If you have discovered a port circle, you can teleport to it from any place beaming is possible. Most circles are free to use, but it is common in the tourism worlds to raise a fee. In the academy, you can find a list of public destinations you can beam to directly."
"Download the inventory when we are back, dear."
The Trail of Worlds introduced the game worlds to Flora and Eddie. Here the word "servers" was more often used then worlds because places like 'Panem et Ludos' were impossible to represent in the physical world. 
This server consisted of arenas with the usual seating plus a ring of restaurants surrounding the pit. A popular stadium like '3v3 100lvl-200lvl, last man standing, no rules' offered 5000 seats. If they were full, a new instance was created with another 5000 open positions.
You could switch between arenas seamlessly. 
The restaurants advertised not only their menus but also to which stadium they connected. Some didn't show fixed arenas but linked to guilds or star players.
"But what happens in the pit? Are there only fights or other competitions as well?"
"Every event has a fighting aspect. For pure sports or races, the server 'Sports and Boards' is the right place. Both servers feature mixed events."
The Trail of Worlds gave Flora a crash course on PvP modes like capture the flag, domination, jailbreak, missions, and deathmatch. Eddie filled in as a color commentator. 
"Thank you. I think I have to see it to imagine it. People are always so creative in finding ways to kill each other." Flora was confused but amused. "And you didn't fib when you said you know about gaming! When did you have time for that?"
"I played a Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplay Game in my twenties. Pretty intensively, if I may admit."
"But you were a huge movie star back then! Whole Germany wanted to *bleep* you, have you as a son-in-law or gay best friend! Or a combination of them!"
"I was shy! And in over my head. So I hid in a basement and behind a computer screen."
Flora nodded. She would have probably done the same. 
Next, the Trail of Worlds explained the different servers. 
First, Flora was excited when she heard that the kids-server had no blood and no killing humanoids, but she was soon disappointed to learn that she wasn't allowed to play at it. Only the guardians of kids could accompany them. 
"Another reason to exert pressure on Robby! But when my future grandchild is old enough to play, I would be 83. Oh well, he could adopt an adorable 12-year-old. Are there adorable children this age? Probably not."
"I lend you Armin in 3 years when he's twelve. For a small fee, of course. Granny-sitting is hard in your case. He should be generously compensated."
"How is Aimee's marriage? Still going strong?"
"Yes, unfortunately. I would have called you immediately otherwise!"
They both sighed exaggeratedly. They spend years teasing their kids to hook up, which, of course, caused the opposite reaction. 
Meanwhile, the Trail of Worlds continued the presentation of the servers. 
The Massive Multiplayer Online Games shared one server, the Cradle for the first five levels. Then they split for level 5-100 on different servers. For the Merc-Game, every half year, a new 5-100 server opened up. The next one was scheduled in just a few weeks.
"I looked into it. It's beneficial to start on a new server because there are good rewards for competitive achievements. On the old servers, they rose unreasonably high with time. The new server is a clean slate. Are you up to it?" Eddie asked.
"I haven't decided yet. All I know is that I want to make a hero's entrance on the Cradle on Sunday. Because I have an appointment on Monday with Evailyn." Flora proceded to tell him about Evai.  
"You should totally get an army of toasters and conquer the games!" Eddie laughed while Flora nodded earnestly. 

Finally, the tour ended, and Flora and Eddie found themselves back in the round room they had started.

After Flora Fluss burns down the kitchen, her son insists she is too old to live alone. She's got two choices. Either move into a retirement home or spend the rest of her life within a virtual reality game governed by society's most advanced artificial intelligence. When you've worked a lifetime as an engineer for home appliances, naturally, you go with the option that has more toasters. 
Soon, Flora finds out that the virtual world is more familiar than she thought. Though, it takes her a while to get used to the idea that tanks don't hold water or oil but the aggro of mobs.

"What's wrong?! How come the screen is black?" Sia asked impatiently. She was in the middle of the thrill, and the screen darkened!
After putting down her virtual reality headset, Sia saw people around her glaring at her 'murderously'.
After all, most of the players leave a thread of spiritual awareness outside, afraid that they would be sneak-attacked.
"Why were you screaming while watching the movie?" Mr. Fang issued the warning, "This is a public place; please don't make loud noises here."
"…" This woman of the Ultimate West Realm was torn between being ashamed and jumping up to hit him.
It wasn't a good feeling.
Suddenly, she remembered that she was here to become a disciple of Master Cloud. Instead, they let her watch this stuff?!
While she was mulling over it, she suddenly felt like she had understood many combat techniques. If she were to use a double-handed greatsword now, her combat force would be much higher than before!
"How can it be?!" Astonishment and excitement filled her mind! She couldn't contain herself!
She felt as if she had obtained the legendary battle memories left by some ancient master in her family. If she could understand these memories, she would achieve unimaginable elevation in her strength.
Thrilled, she was eager to continue watching.
"Hurry! Turn on the spiritual artifact for me!"
Mr. Fang said mildly, "It's no use turning it on."
He pointed at the time on the computer beside hers. "It's 12 at midnight, time to close the shop."
"…" Grinding her white teeth, Sia looked like an enraged female puma.
"By the way, if you beat the shop owner or make trouble in the shop, you're no longer welcome in the shop." This sentence ended all her violent urges.
Mr. Fang gestured to the door. "Please."
"!!!" Sia felt like she was going to explode.

The masters of the Tang Family, Wang Family, and other ancient families had just traveled from afar and arrived here, ready to get on the computers in the shop. "The shop is not open?"
"What's wrong?! How come it's still closed at this hour?"
"Resting? What damn excuse is this?!"

"I want to return to the Ultimate West Realm… The Spiritual State is so dangerous…"
Walking before them, Sia looked awkward and embarrassed when she overheard the conversation.
Feeling a headache, Lou Piaoling touched the scratches on his face and said, "You guys, stop messing around…"
Subdued, about 100 of them each bought a membership card and got online.

Only new games would be written on the small blackboard.
Today, the top position of Final Fantasy was taken by a new game on the small blackboard: [Dungeon Fighter Online. Activation price - free.]

Now, with his Mini Worlds Gaming Console, he would be able to earn the title of being 'irreplaceable' to the country, to the society, and to the people. Consequently, he would receive the blessing and protection of everyone, regardless of what was to come in the future!
Ren Suo navigated to the World Shop and found that the [Free Game-of-the-Month] column was greyed out. When he tried to enter, a message appeared: [You have finished the Free Game-of-the-Month. Please wait patiently for next month's Free Game-of-the-Month.]
10 merits were still required to conduct a single [Search] for a key. Ren Suo had 14 merits left after using one merit to retrieve the 1-star Sleeping Key.
Although Ren Suo did not know how valuable merits were, he did not want to risk spending all his merits searching for keys. After all, he had not found out where or how he could credit more merits in the game. The [Search] page no longer showed the prompt "You fool, you are too poor to perform a search". Instead, the prompt read "Enter the special rewards that you wish to obtain." Ren Suo was bewildered.
Perhaps due to the fact that Ren Suo now had merits, there was also a new column in the World Shop which read: [April Fools' Discounted Items!]
April Fools'? Ren Suo was stunned for a moment. He realized it would be April 1 in two days.

Why is there no offer on April Fools' Day itself…?
As Ren Suo had expected, all the games on the list had to be bought with merits.
Although Ren Suo was not wealthy, he now had an unquenchable and insatiable desire to buy more merits with his money, for he realized that he could not even afford any of the discounted games.

"But I only have 14 merits!" Ren Suo was perplexed. He did not see "The Hitman" in the list, but he knew he would not have been able to afford it either. "Isn't there something similar to a beginner's welcome gift?" 
Even if he had money and could top-up his merits, he would not have been able to buy some of the games anyway. For example, [The Fiery Supernatural] was only available to level 4 players and was greyed out and inaccessible to Ren Suo.
Ren Suo realized that these games either required players to be level 1 or level 4; levels 2 and 3 seemed to be merely a transitioning phase, whereas level 4 was the peak.
Ren Suo still had no idea if there were any games that required players to have an even higher level than level 4. Even so, he realized that there were hundreds of discounted games as he scrolled quickly through the list. He also found out that there was absolutely no information about any of the games online. Thus there was no way Ren Suo could search online for gameplay strategies and walkthroughs. 
Ren Suo then discovered an available option at the top of the list: [Show only games I can afford]. He immediately selected that option.
The long list instantly disappeared, leaving only one option.
[A Strong Warrior Ascends 10,000 Meters], 50% OFF, 8 merits.
…The name sounded tacky and inelegant, even more so than [The Hitman].
However, this was the only game that Ren Suo could afford. If he did not buy this, he could only wait for the free game that would be released next week. Only after clearing those games, could he then earn more merits to buy other games.
When Ren Suo read the game description however, he found a major highlight:

We are only allowed to influence this world through our champions and our high priest or priestess. We choose our champions based entirely on how much power their souls carry, but that's only part of why I choose you."

I start to protest, but she interrupts me.

"Stop complaining and think about it for a moment. You are in a desperate fight against the other champions, and the stakes couldn't be any higher. The winner becomes a literal god, and losing leaves you in eternal agony. You should scrounge up every dredge of power you can. Being a high priestess is a power multiplier. Only an idiot would throw away this advantage. You need to become an adventurer and level up. You already know how highly adventurers prize priests and priestesses. There has never been a high priestess adventurer. Instead of looking for a group that will let you join them, they will fight for a chance to join you."

"Now, set all of that aside. Pretend you're not a champion. Now imagine that the Goddess of Domination and Control offers to let you become her high priestess. You gain all the powers of a normal priestess, plus many additional spells and abilities. Did I mention that my domains are Domination and Control? What would you do with the level 50 spell [Permanent Domination]? It does exactly what it sounds like. The target will do their best to follow any order you give them, and it never wears off. Anything at all. Only targets with a level greater than 40 have even a chance to resist. That leaves 90% of the world helpless. Did I mention that my domains are Domination and Control?"

She makes a really good point. If she is telling the truth about me being a champion, then I need this. If she is telling the truth about me becoming her high priestess, then I want this. If this is just a dream, then my decision doesn't matter. I don't have any choice but to accept and become her high priestess. I hate being forced into anything, but I can't fight the gods.

"No. You can't. Incidentally, in answer to both questions you should have asked… You are a frost dragon, not a white dragon. There are 147 champions." She says, then the world fades away.

Happy birdsongs wake me in the morning. When I open my eyes the first thing I see is the foxkin's bare breast, still gripped in one of my hands. Fresh scabs give mute testimony to how rough I was last night. My talons sliced her open several times. I lay still and enjoy the steady sound of her beating heart. I sit up so that I can take a good look. My little ninja. Oh, and eye candy. I even out her slightly asymmetrical breasts, then bump them up a couple sizes. A ninja should have black fur. I darken her red fur until it turns black. Then I shade her white fur to grey. Perfect. Wait. I want to mark her with a visible symbol of my ownership. Kolra said I'm a frost dragon, so I'll use a snowflake as my symbol. I imagine perfect snowflakes on the back of both of her hands. Instead of silver, I make these a pure metallic white that matches my scales.

Do I need to make any changes to her personality? If she does anything that annoys me I can just make her stop. I consider all the information dancing through my head and feel a smile come to my lips as I make a few adjustments that leave her proud of belonging to me.

Anything else? Hmm. A twisted little game occurs to me. I switch back to editing her body and attempt to make a change. To my delite it works. I really do have god-like powers over her. Jericho nodded. "Sure. Since today has been hard for both of us, let me play a piece I created before you were born." He rushed over to the piano, seeming to lose his fatigue.
"Which one?" Moira's brown eyes glistened with excitement.
The man stretched his fingers. "I call it The Serenade for the Soothing of the Soul. It actually requires 3 instruments for the full song but I will share with you the piano section. My few fans call it the Song of Healing."
A haunting, yet calming melody voiced itself from the old grand piano. The minor tone sent relaxing chills through the sibling's bodies. 
After the melody ended the two ate a meager meal in silence. 
Moira let out a sigh. "Brother, your music is so wonderful. Why don't others love it like we do?"
Jericho gave a sad laugh. "The instruments I use are considered relics of the past. These days, music is created electronically. Because my music is alive, it gets suppressed by the plentiful songs others make. My music is considered outdated. That is sadly the reality of our world."

The next morning, Jericho walked to work. The little antique shop's dusty atmosphere brought a small smile to his face. 
An ad rested on the counter for a new VRMMORPG "Freedom Online."
The slender musician pulled out some tools to repair a damaged violin acquired not too long ago. Jericho was very familiar with instruments. His great grandfather had taught him how to make and repair most major ones.
The morning was quiet as usual for the rundown business.
After finishing the adjustments of the violin, Jericho tuned it. Very quickly a melody formed. The vibrations of the strings escaped the confines of the store. 
An elegantly dressed woman stopped as she passed by. "What a beautiful song." She whispered.
"Boy! Stop making a racket and get back to work!" A grumpy middle aged man shouted.  
Jericho abruptly stopped playing the violin. "Yes boss." He replied reluctantly placing the newly repaired violin on the shelf to be sold.
The woman outside frowned. "Why did it stop?" She walked into the store.
The bell hanging beside the old shop's door rang.
The musician looked up. "Welcome to Grandpa Todd's antique shop." He replied in a very professional manner.
The model like woman looked around. "Where is the music playing device? It sounded so pure."
Jericho laughed inside. "This is an antique shop. With the exception of the register, everything in this place is old. We don't carry modern music playing devices."
"Then what was that music I was hearing before?" She inquired pursing her heavily lipstick covered lips.
"Oh that?" Jericho asked pretending he realized what the woman was referring to. 
He picked up the violin. "That song came from this beauty." He replied ignoring the makeup covered woman's charm. 
"What is that strange object? That doesn't look like it is connected to the network. How does it play songs?"
Jericho laughed. "This is an ancient relic known as a violin." He mildly exaggerated for dramatic effect. "By using this special stick and rubbing against the strings in very specific ways you can create music. The song you were hearing earlier is something I played using this device."
The woman looked wide eyed in shock. "Can you show me how it works?"
"Let me ask the boss."
"Sure."
Jericho turned his head to the stairs. "Hey Boss!" He shouted. "There is a client that wants to hear how the violin works."
A muffled grunt was heard in reply.
He smiled before turning back to the lady. "The song I am going to play is a song I wrote called  Moonlit Lullaby." He lifted the violin and started to play one of his many majestic songs. 
She listened and watched the man in awe. She felt relaxed as he played. Her light tears slightly smeared her mascara. 
He finished the song and placed the violin back on the shelf. 
She stared at the lanky man in shock. 
Jericho smiled. "Feel free to browse. I hope you can find something you like." He returned to his business mode to break the stunned silence. 
"How much?" She shook her head. "How much for the violin? I want to hear that song again!" She inquired.
"200 Credits."
She was shocked. "Such a wonderful music making device and it is so cheap?"
Jericho shook his head. "The instrument is only able to play music in the hands of someone who knows how to play it. It cannot make music on its own."
The woman looked mildly disappointed. "I see. I will buy it anyways. At a minimum I can remember the song when I look at it."
Jericho helped her with the transaction and packaging. 
The woman looked down at the flier on the counter. "Freedom Online has been out for a few days now. Do you play it?"
Jericho shook his head. "No, I couldn't afford it and I can't let my little sister go hungry." He replied casually.
"Oh."
The woman left with the violin. 
"I hope you take care of her." He sighed; unaware he obtained a new fan.
The boss came down. "Jerry, I am sorry to tell you, I am going to have to close up shop. I can no longer afford this place. I will send you your last paycheck later. I hope you can find a new job soon."
Jericho was startled. Losing a job was not a surprise he was hoping for. He went home dejected.
The woman tapped her watch. A translucent screen hovered above it. "Search for the song Moonlit Lullaby." She spoke into the watch. 
After browsing through a few songs she found a recording by an artist named Jericho Maestro. She hit the play button and listened to the song again. "Such beautiful music hidden away like an oyster's pearl." She poetically replied. 

The next day, Moira danced to the jaunty tunes played by her brother. Today was her 12th birthday and due to their financial hardships; Jericho gave her the only thing he could. A night filled with whatever musical pieces she wanted. He even played the ones he didn't like.
A knock at the door ended the festivities.
The freckled girl sulked. She stomped to the door before opening it. 
Two men dressed like movers stood on the porch. "Excuse me, miss. Is Jericho Maestro home?"
Jericho walked up to the door. "What can I do you for, gentlemen?" Being called his artist name was uncommon but not unheard of.
"We came to deliver a couple of packages and a letter."
The man frowned. "We aren't expecting anything." He replied.
"We understand. The sender may not have informed you they were sending you these items. The game cabins and the installation fees have already been paid for. Will you please allow us to finish our job and install them for you?"
"Sure." Jericho opened the door wider. "Let's let the men do their work Moira. What song would you like me to play next?"

The delivery men brought in two large gaming cabins and hooked them up as per their instructions. They passed the letter over to the man at the piano and left.
Jericho opened the letter. 

Sir Maestro,
We have delivered to you two gaming cabins; one for you and one for your sister. Both pods contain the game Freedom Online. We have paid for the subscription and operating fees. We sincerely hope you both can enjoy the game free of charge.

In the year 2741 Music has become a thing created solely via technology. The age of instruments had long since passed. 
Jericho grew up in a family who lived ‘outdated’ lives. From his grandfather, he learned how make, repair, and play a good amount of instruments. It was his life passion. If he lived in the early 2000s he would have become famous with the skill he possessed. 
The man worked hard on both his job at an antique shop and his failing musical career to take care of kid sister, the only family member he had left. 
Freedom online (A very generic MMO type of name) had recently been released. One of the many VRMMORPG’s created in this era. Jericho and his sister ignored the game as it was something well beyond what they could afford.

A boy around 17-18 years old yawned as he rose up from the bed and scratched his black messy hair.

Lucas sighed in dejection reminding himself how broke he is. 

"Well, it won't hurt to try it at least" 

He typed in his name, address, PORTAL, and chose white as color and sends it at least trying to make it hard for other people to get a chance. 

Since he is going to be late if he continued to watch longer, he turned it off and went out with a dissatisfied mood as he kept thinking how high the price is for that device.

"Hey hey, did you watch the news this morning?" 

"Yeah, finally, a real virtual gaming device has been invented!" 

"I know right!? I'm definitely gonna get me one of those! Even if I have to prostrate to my parents!" 

"Dude seriously? Then prostrate for my sake too." 

"Get your own [Portal]!" 

Two boys of around the same age as Lucas were excitedly discussing about the new gaming device behind him while they are waiting for their professor. 

"I wonder if I can beg my parents for one too?..." 

He shook his head upon the thought as soon as he thought about it thinking he'll only get scold at if he did such a thing. 

It wasn't just the two boys behind him that were talking about the virtual gaming device, ever since he went out of his condo unit, almost all the people around him were talking about it in excitement. Be it on the streets, the school lobby, hallways, cafeteria, or his classroom, he would hear words like [Portal], [World Gate Online], virtual world, etc. Frankly, he was already fed up with it as it reminded him how he cannot buy such a thing. 

After letting out another sigh, someone that looked like the professor came in and the students quieted as they went back to their seats silently. 

Though the class orientation has started, he would still hear his classmates whispering to each other saying things like checking [World Gate Online] later or buying a [Portal] after school. Because of that, his bad mood went on further and he could hardly remember the orientation. 

Since this is the first day of class and the professors only gave the orientation, class was finished immediately and he started to go to the cafeteria to buy lunch. After getting a simple meal which was the cheapest, he looked around to look for free table and spotted a table with his friends on it. Since there were no vacant tables, he chose to sit there instead. 

Even now, everywhere he hears things about [Portal] or [World Gate Online], even his friends were talking about it. Since he was filled with irritation, he didn't hear any of what they were talking about and silently ate his meal until he was suddenly asked by one of his friend. 

"How about you Lucas?" 

"Hm?" 

"Were you not listening? I'm asking whether you have the money to buy a [Portal]." 

Gavin Fastmark, one of his fellow IT student friends suddenly asked him while Lucas shut himself in his own world so naturally, he didn't know what he was being asked about. 

This isn't extortion by the way, Lucas isn't someone that was bullied though he probably looked like one. It seems his friends were also stuck on the same situation as him and were asking if there was one who can buy. 

"Of course not, even if I do, I don't have the time to play it." 

"Haah, I forgot you were the studious type huh? Since you have a bit of knowledge in animes and game, I thought you'll be interested." 

"Of course I'm still interested, I mean, who wouldn't? I'm really curious how they were able to make the game and the device, I wonder what algorithms they used?" 

"That kind of interest huh?" 

"Well, killing monsters is interesting too…but there's no helping it since I don't have money." 

"I know right?" 

They all sighed at the same time disappointed by their own lack of money. 

Though Lucas said what he said, he was seriously interested in playing the game, and he didn't lie when he said he was interested on how it was made, as an IT student, he was seriously curious about it. 

After finishing their meal, they gave their goodbyes and went for their next class.

School has ended without a hitch, though, Lucas was still in a bad mood as the continued talk about [World Gate Online] around him. As an otaku, Lucas is really irritated over the fact that he can't play such a fantasy like game where he could play using his own body strengthened by the system, using magic, swords, defeating legendary monsters like dragons, he was put on a bad mood as he went back to his condo unit. 

After changing his clothes, he lazed around the unit either by reading mangas, watching animes, and reading light novels to forget his misery. Though his friends know him as the studious type with a bit of knowledge in animes and games, in reality, Lucas was a lazy person who would laze around like so though he isn't that into games but still played a few. For now, he avoided playing games as it will only remind him about [World Gate Online]. The reason why he kept it a secret was so that his parents won't be able to know about it through any means possible. So he created another personality of himself, the scholar, studious, know-it-all type. 

Even as he lazed around, he never forgets to do his homework and studies when there is an exam. So I guess you can really call him a genius to be able to get scholarship despite being actually lazy. Though, he probably never realized it himself. 

After being satisfied, he prepared dinner. Since he wanted to sleep early, he cooked a simple meal and finished it fast, this time, he made sure that he didn't open the TV to avoid hearing news related to [Portal] or [World Gate Online] and went to bed. 

"…A virtual world huh…must be nice to live in such a fantasy like world…" 

After he let out a mutter while staring at the dim ceiling, he finally closed his eyes. What he didn't know, that as soon as he wake up, something unbelievable would come that would change his world.

A small light appeared in the room as Lucas continued to sleep. 

The small light which appeared came from his own mobile phone that vibrated as it received a message.

You have chosen as one out of 1000 lucky people which were given their own [Portal] together with the game [World Gate Online]!!! 

[Portal] will be shortly delivered after 5 hours upon receiving this message!

This is not my story. I find this really cool and unique, I posted it in this site to share this to everyone. The Original Author of this story was imaginexbreaker, it was posted in Japtem  and is still in Hiatus.

Lucas Lauwers, an ordinary college student submits an entry for the lottery to win the very first virtual gaming device and game on a whim and wins! He played the game for the first time without any information beforehand and joins a party. The party then encounters a boss level monster right of the bat and he was left alone by his teammates, he stumbles upon a hole and was able to get away from the boss monster only to be stuck inside the cave! Not being able to set the town as his resurrection point, the cave was set as default since he had rested there. With nowhere to go, what will Lucas do?

Update: Thursday and Friday

A twenty-two-year-old man by the name of Raymond Lee was sitting in front of his laptop and playing an MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game) called Eaion. He wasn't really bad nor was he that good at playing the game. In the gaming world, he was just slightly above average in skill. He once thought that he could become a pro-gamer, but his skills turned out to be pretty average.

It was back in high-school when his dream was formed. Back then he was a promising martial artist, he was fit, and was a rather studious student. Yet after a pretty bad fall, his body became unable to perform as well as before.

He could no longer win any tournaments, he couldn't even train as hard as before. He was still rather fit as a person, but that wasn't enough for him. As he tried harder than before, he just ruined his body even more. After being unable to continue doing the thing he used to love, he was unable to focus on his school work and was going under great depression.

Raymond's parents tried their best to help their son but it was to no avail. As his depression and his anxiety were reaching their peak, he started thinking about killing himself.


It was at that darkest moment in his life when one of his friends introduced him to the world of online gaming, manga, light novels, web novels, and anime. It was a world that was so new to him. It was like a book that came to life. In these vastly different worlds, there were many interesting things. In there, his character could do almost anything.

The thing he liked the most was the online games. In that world, he can once again be a powerful individual. He found it fun to play, and it was something even he could do in his current state. Though Raymond never recovered from his past injuries, and he never became the same again, but he was happy.

A few years later, Raymond who once had an athletic body was now a rather chubby individual. Though he wasn't too fat, he was still quite fat. Since he stopped exercising and focused all of his free time playing video games, he became a rather unhealthy individual.

At the moment Raymond was playing another MMORPG, and he has been playing for a few days straight. He hasn't been sleeping a whole lot not wanting to miss the events were he can gain event items.


Once the event was over, he could finally move from his chair. He wanted to get some water, but as he stood up he felt rather dizzy. His head felt like it was being hammered upon. He then tripped and fell face-first on the floor.

It seems like he hit something as his head started hurting even more. He could no longer move, and in the corner of his eye, he could see something reddish... Raymond then came to a realization. The thing that he was looking at, that was his blood!

Raymond got scared as he felt his body getting colder and colder. His vision slowly turning darker and darker.

'I don't want to die! I don't want to die! Not like this! I just got enough money to roll for an SSR GACHA!' Those were Raymond's last thoughts before his mind blacked out.

Raymond who felt like he was asleep for a very long time, could feel a warm feeling enveloped his body. He could then finally open his eyes, and once he did the first thing he saw was green. He was under a rather tall tree.

He then tried to get up, as he did he felt his body was lighter than before. In fact, the feeling he got was as if he returned to the time before he was injured. Raymond then looked down and saw aside from his shorts he wasn't wearing anything. But that wasn't the most surprising part, the most surprising part was his belly fat disappeared. What replaced it was a six-pack, his abs were back. As Raymond continued to be confused, a floating text box suddenly appeared before him.

"System has successfully loaded."

A random everyday gamer is transported to another world. A world that is filled with ogres, dragons, and other dangerous fantasy monsters. In that world, he gains a system that forces him to create the strongest guild. Using the system he's able to assign the world's inhabitants as players, which are given skills to help him make the guild grow.

As he grows stronger, the local inhabitants weren't enough. So with the help of the system, he summons players from earth.

DYSTOPIAN TALES ONLINE

In year 3000, one game changed the life of all humanity. 

Dystopian Tales Online [DPO] is a Massive Multi-Player Online Role Playing Game introduced by the Foster Science and Toys Corporation, a leading billion dollar gaming company that is known for their extensive gaming preferences attracting players in all ages. 

Known as the Foster Gaming Co., the games are created by a team of professional programmers and network technicians resulting to a highly defined computer generated graphics with effects almost close to reality. Now, one of their newly created game, [DPO], is said to be the promising 'new generation' gaming.

DPO is a new game defined for its unique first person gaming experience. According to the creators, the name Dystopian is placed as the front title because of the self-generating genre of the game. That is to say, choosing between worlds and maps is possible. Unlike in a normal MMORPG where quests and the maps given are commanded by default, in DPO, each decision will lead to a [Happy End] or [Bad End] giving players almost real-to-life situations.

Not only that [FREE WILL] existed in this game, also, a self character personalization and weapon creation is possible. Self Character Personalization [SCP] is a character generator where you can freely design your character. Hair color, eyes, accessories, even the arrangement of buttons and ribbons on the selected clothing can be adjusted. 

There is also the Face Copy Recognition where you can make your characters look the same as you! All you need to do is to take a picture of yourself and crop the part of your face. Paste it to the editing software and do the favorable adjustments.

Weapon Creation also works the same. For all the players who are weapon creation enthusiasts, this generator created a huge impact to these people who are tired of using market weapons or droppings. Through this generator, the player can costumize the power level and attributes of the created weapon. You can also add and modify, or just simply disassemble it. The generator has the Blueprint option and Copy that helps in creating the weapon smoothly.

However, even though this Weapon Creation is a good extension of the game, the weapons created under this method happen to process a 'trial and error' command. Due to the Blueprint option, one can simply create a weapon. But the blueprints that are present are coming from the game itself, which only shows that creating a new specialized weapon would mean that the designer shall start from scratch. 

One material might not fit the other. The concept is almost the same with forging equipments where only chosen crystals can match the weapon's requirments. If it exceeds the valu, the weapon or equipment will break. The Weapon Creation might need an all out plan but the success of a created weapon outlimits the normal ones. 

Another factor of the game is its classification of Races and Archetypes. Races are the so-called bloodlines that is divided to five main races: Beasts, Elven, Humanoid, Half-Ling, and the Undead. One player will choose a race and after that they can freely choose whatever archetypes they want.

Archetypes are like sub-classes. They are divided under the races. for example, under the Elven Race comes the archetypes of mages and witches. One can choose their original race, and also can choose archetype from other races. 

The archetype of warrior is under the Humanoid RACE. If the player chooses the Elven Race, he or she can freely have the warrior archetype. Meaning, each player has his or her own characteristics almost different from the other. 

A single player can choose up to ten archetypes. 

Other than these features, DPO is also using a virtual reality helmet. This makes players to see and experience the world of Dystopian as if they are really there. Buying the console includes this freebie, while those who already have their VR can just simply exclude it. 

Like in any known VR games, this equipment will be worn by the player. The specialized screen inside the VR will reflect the game. But before playing, one should log-in by using the computer keyboard and stuff. Once in, voice command and hearing effects will be possible. Though, joysticks are still needed to move the character of the game. 

However, no matter how advance or interesting a game can offer, the decline of such products is gradually showing all throughout the years. It is true that the Fosters Gaming Co., is a truly advance company for online gaming, but this is not the only company that issues high rated games. As the year progress, technology also have risen to its peak, reaching its final destination in the middle of the 25th century. 

Holographic TVs, skin thin smart phones, garbage androids, automated cooking utensils, electricity generated wheel-less cars, nanorobots constructions, humanoid artificial intellegence, highly advanced security system, traffic drones - everything around the world changed from the primitive lifestyle to an all technology yet nature friendly world. 

After the 5th world war, the countries of the world signed a pact to create a more peaceful world out of violence. Reaching the 25th century changed the course of all the humanity that was totally devastated by the preceeding wars. Laws are reformed, new kinds of goverment are experimented, and technology is tested. At the end of this century, a new form of beings are created that advanced to the present date. 

The progress is fast paced. New inventions are created, making life in Earth easier than before. Voilence is banned that lessened robbery and murder. Education was taken high priority, giving almost a ninety-nine percent literacy rate, one percent as the exception of the newborn babies. Medicine is also enhanced with humans reaching a hundred years an average because of good health. 

Famine, floods, earthquakes are now can be measure through computers. By just guessing when these events will happen, the authorities will create an evacuation plan to ensure the people's safety. Other than dying of old age, none of the people of the earth suffered. 

Well, this is just the first chapter of the humanities greatest change.

After 5 melleniums, the technology slowly advanced. Though the peace is being maintained, no new discoveries were learned. The laws that was created along time ago didn't change. The lifestyle and everyday life continued but nothing much added to it. With all the diseases, infections, disasters being surpressed by machines - it is as if the world suddenly stopped caring.

Nobody actually cared.

That is why games suddenly became a big hit. With violence out of the way, people seem to find games as creative and fun. With most of these computer games required combat and skills, plus the settings on the primitive time, the people are piqued with interest. Each house is estimated to have at least one gaming equipment for the family to play.

But then, this generation also never lasted.

Every year, the same style genre of games are being released with only quests and names different from each other. Pro-gamers can finish playing these games for a week that will be given a rate in website where guides and maps of any games can be found. This online ranking is worldwide, meaning, if one pro-player says that this one game is crap, expect that everyone will read about it. 

And nobody will buy the game.

Just in time of the release of Dystopian Tales Online, only those gamers who are hardcore fans of this company's games bought it. Almost a month has passed but they didn't even reach the quota of selling the only one thousand copies they distributed. Though, this changed drastically after the end of second month.

The reason why nobody bought the game, aside from the few, until now is because most of the gamers are waiting for the pro-players to give their rate. After a month and two, these pro-players only posted the picture of the game and only single sentence of review made the whole world wanted to grab a copy of it. 

"However, that is not what actually happened to groups of people who are not able to play this game."

Questions started to rise when the demand of the game suddenly bursted. Knowing the excellence of this game, there's no doubt that it will sell great. But then, why did the Foster gaming only released one thousand copies? One could expect that investing more copies could give them more profit.

"An experiment to a selected few..."

Unknown to all is a hidden agenda created by the company. To enhance the gaming experience and to create a new technological advancement, the team invented a kind of the game that will bring the players to a virtual reality. That is, conjuring the whole being of the player to the game where they will experience ALL of their senses without restrictions.

It is true that with their current technology, games can now be done with three of the senses present - sense of sight, touch, and hearing. Some games may include the sense of scent and taste but still not fully intact with the game. They still need props like preparing food beforehand or creating a room while wearing a VR to fulfill the sense.

But this is different. 

A known engineer, Tristan Foster, the son of the head of the Foster Gaming Co., designed a theory that suggests that creating a dimension of games is possible. However, creating this world using computers of THIS world will only create a form but not the experience. In order for them to create [THIS] dimension, they must look for something that is existing in this world, but in the same time, not happening in this exact world.

DREAMS - this word perfectly fit the needed requirement.

Tristan explained the run through of his creation. According to him, a machine will be created to stimulate the brain while undergoing REM. Synapses will be controlled using vibrations, sending signals to the control center of the brain where dreams are created. This will send the compacted information clearly, attaching it to the game's server, then entering the world of dreams as if logging-in in a game.

Experts asked about this weird experiment. Of all, why did he chose dreams? Up until now, it is still a mystery to them why people dream and what is its purpose. Inserting a variable that is not tangible would be useless and can be held to be a dysfuction. Besides, of all the body parts, brain contains the biggest mystery of all.

The approval of this project lasted for years. Tristan showed data and statistics, including familiar theories and common sense. As years pass by, all the members of the team realized the point slowly. Few pages of research started to pile up with complex equations only they could understand. Experts are called in to help and somehow proved the theories possible.

It is as if creating a new world is this generation's mission.

Five years of work and Tristan succesfully earned his reward. Showing the detailed blueprint of how the system works left those people who mocked him for being mad. Human ethics and rights are not violated, the safety of this whole experiment showed through trials that he himself created. Tristan became the first test subject. 

Applying this, Tristan planned a worldwide experiment but with the condition that the subjects should be as well as smart as him. The safety of the experiment is succesful due to his intellegence. Tristan is a prodigy, started studying computer engineering at the age of twelve. If this variable cannot be met, he's afraid that the results would be different.

That is why he designed the Dystopian Tales Online. And in this game, a real world is hidden. Everyone thought that he named it Dystopian Tales due to the game's feature of choosing a specific genre. But nobody knows that his real reason of choosing this word is from the description intself.

Dystopian - the world of suffering. The ability to twist reality. 

After the first release of the game, some of the players reported that there is this weird test with one thousand questions in multiple choice right after the installation is finished. Taking the test or not taking it will not actually affect the game's features. However, to those people who took the test and passed the margin was not able to play the game.

Instead, at the end of the test, the whole game was terminated and a black screen will show up. In the middle of this black screen is a set of numbers that happen to be a telephone number. Of course, as if common sense, everyone called the telephone number. And then they are greeted with:

[HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF A FALSE LEGEND?]

Inside the game, Dystopian Tales Online, runs the world they called [VIRTUAL REALITY]. Those who managed to praise their worth are called to create a contract with the Foster Gaming Co. By participating the experiment, the subjects will be called as adventurers of the Virtual Reality. 

They are requested to play the game every night during their REM sleep with a technology the company will provide. Also, they are not just playing for fun. Because of the vitality of this experiment, the subjects are given insurances and a salary of ten thousand pesos per month (about 200USD$). All they have to do is play and level up. 

"It's something new and kind of amazing," Aud said, playing the straw of his juice.

Looking around, faces of men and children gathered around him. His group occupied half of the seats in front of the bar, rather, they are found on their usual places again. 

Aud always sits on the middle most part with Frass on his left. Leon and Shin would sit anywhere they want but often sits beside Aud. Two kids will be sitting beside them with another girl at the very end. 

For seven years, these people sure have grown old.

"Wait a second," Shin called out, touching the tip of his chin thinking. "How did you know that we are playing Virtual Reality? I mean, we are playing with DTO players right? The difference is that they are seeing it through a computer while we are all inside the game."

Aud blinked, wondering what he should answer. 

He looked over at Leon who is in between them, currently staying away from their conversation because he is playing a bonus mini game in front of them. A black translucent screen is floating at the front of the elf. He's actually duelling with the bartender who is cleaning glasses at their front while waiting for Leon to move. 

"Hmmm? What?" Leon noticed Aud looking over him. Despite of not joining the conversation, he knows what they are discussing about. 

"You have something to say?" Aud said.

"Ah... let's see..." Leon clicked the screen on the mini game to show his move. 

"First of all, DTO is a first person perspective game. Unlike any games, you can never have a full control of the actions especially that everyone is still a noob at it. I guess even the players who played the year earlier will not ever be able to move it flawlessly."

"However, we managed to break it as if we are actually in the scene. Can you remember the Speed Combo that you did? If it was from a computer's perspective, you will be hitting the monster in one place. You can't move to places due to the rate that you have."

"Whoa, so you mean you were able to recognize us by just looking? Wait a second, how did you know about that," Shin exclaimed. "Are you watching us the whole time? Why didn't you help?"

"Not really," Aud took a sip from his juice. "We are actually heading to the floor's boss when we saw a group of low level players entering the dead end. We just followed and watched. It's not that we have any responsibility to help you."

Shin grumbled, not believing the words he said. 

A loud alarm suddenly sounded making Virtual Reality players to look up. Like in any other day, a rectangle with smooth edges will appear above, showing number in zeroes. The VR players recognized it, stopping or hurrying whatever they are doing to log out.

This zeroes inside the rectangle is the system's time for all the virtual players. That is, the VR server will start as early as six and ends at three in the morning. Whenever the clock hits three, an alarm will appear across the accounts to announce that it is their time to log out. Only twenty minutes extension is allowed.

The purpose of this action is to run the maintainance to collect the data of the game. Also, the REM state would be very weak during these hours and the machine might not be able to grasp the needed information. Once the player is logged-out, he or she will continue sleeping until their body clock wakes them up. 

Moreover, if a VR player fails to log out in the game with the given time, the account will be forced erased and the player has to restart again.

The twenty minutes time is now counting down. 

One by one, players' status changed to offline with green dots turning red. Some are still on the process of saving their profiles while checking their inventory. The twins and the girl from their group exited first. Frass also took his way out only waiting for Aud to finish.

"Another day, another game. Well, see you later guys," Shin said, looking at them while pressing some commands in his profile. After a second, his character vanished and his status is now offline. 

"I guess we have to continue this game later," Leon heaved a sigh.

The bartended nodded with the agreement. Leon closed the mini game screen and opened his menu. Other than him, nobody can see. Actually, nobody can see the other's player menu unless if shown purposely. He scrolled the space in front of him until he reached the end of the line. 

"I'll be off now," he told the two. "See you again later."

"Bye," Only Aud responded. 

All of the remaining players logged out in a succession until no one is left.

When technological advancement created the norms of the world, people had fallen to the age where peace occupied every nation. With the fear of stagnation, humans developed many games to simulate worlds that somehow substituted as their 'fighting grounds'.

However, a certain game was developed that caused a rift amongst all the games. Only players whose IQ had reached a hundred and half above is allowed to play, and said to be the games made for the geniuses.

The game is developed to create the humanities' next step to evolution - and that is opening a portal to the next world.

"Gu Jingze, I want to eat an apple."
"Okay."
"Gu Jingze. Get me some milk."
"Hn."
"Gu Jingze, I want to go upstairs and lie down."
"Let's go."
"Gu Jingze…"
The room was constantly filled with Lin Che's voice and Gu Jingze's movements.
Outside, the maids were discussing amongst themselves. "Sir is really treating Madam better and better now."
"Yes. He's so good to her that it's terrifying. I don't know what exactly Sir is thinking."
"It's frightening just looking at it. I've never seen Sir like this."
Hearing the maids speak, Lin Che walked in and saw Gu Jingze still reading some documents. He looked up only when he heard her. Then, he glanced at her and said, "Sit for a while first."
Lin Che walked over to him. She had been waiting for him to come and see how she was doing once he was done with his work.
She looked up and asked, "Gu Jingze, is there something wrong with you?"
Gu Jingze asked, "What's wrong with me?"
While Lin Che was speaking, he suddenly pulled her into his embrace.
She blinked. She casually put her arm around his neck and sat on his legs while moving about restlessly. Her confinement had just ended, so he still could not touch her. Now that she was rubbing against him like this, his gaze darkened by a few shades.
Lin Che asked, "Why are you so good to me?"
"Why are you suddenly asking me this?" He looked at her with his eyebrows raised.
She responded, "What's wrong? I'm just curious."
"Could it be that I treated you badly in the past?"
"Uh. That's not the case either. It's just that you've been behaving even more strangely recently."
He shook his head, exasperatedly. Then, he pulled her hand to him and pressed it to his lips briefly before saying, "Is a man still considered a man if he doesn't have a stronger urge to dote on his woman after seeing her in pain because of him?"
Lin Che's heart twitched.
He said, "I just want to treat you better. That's all."
Lin Che asked sweetly, "So, so you want to treat me better only because you feel guilty?"
"…" He continued, "How can you call that guilt? It's because I genuinely care about you."
"But you spoke as if you wanted to treat me better only because you felt guilty after I went through the pain of childbirth."
"You're misinterpreting my words."
"I don't care. That's exactly what you meant."
"It really wasn't…"
"Then, what's the reason?" Lin Che pouted and asked, her arm hooked around his neck.
