Hey everyone, thank you for your interest in my book, this is my first time writing a story. This is my original work and the setting is urban American. My characters are African American, Carribean, and Hispanic descent, so this book may have a different flavor from the more traditional stories on here. Also feel free to comment if there are any slang terms or phrases you don't understand.

Chapter 4 
Nom contemplates Texas
 
What better place in the world to test such a power than in Texas? It was one of the most populated states in the Union, and physically the second largest. The majority of its population was composed of pathetic moron evangelical conservatives, or so the elections seemed to show. If he had the means to cause death at will, why not see if he could cull the very population that needed it the most? Target those responsible for so much of the agony being experienced in the nation and the world in general.
Millions of people dead in the Muslim world due to the war crimes of George W Bush: first his invasions destabilizing the region, creating ISIS, and then his backing the Arab Spring. Every one of those deaths could be put at the feet of the average conservative Texan who had brought the monster to power. After all it was doubtable that he would have ever been elected president without first being the governor of Texas. 
Once upon a time, America had some of the best public schools in the world. Thanks to conservative backlashes, led in large part by Texans, those schools had plunged to a pathetic standing. They were now ranked so low, that third world nations were regularly surpassing them. Texas had a law that required it to buy new school text books every few years. All of the textbooks were standardized across the state. The result was that Texas essentially wrote the textbooks for America. Publishers simply set their books to Texas standards, since they bought the most books and did so at regular intervals. Those standards were set by elected evangelical morons who blindly believed the King James Bible. The kind of fool that thought the world was only six thousand years old, no matter what reality had to say on the subject. Idiots, that did all they could to ensure that real science stayed far away from American class rooms. 
Texas, what a state. Largest in the lower forty-eight—economic, population, and natural resource, power house. It's population and vast wealth gave it political power essentially second to none. The state of California had a larger population, and one of the largest economies in the world in its own right. But Texas had invented the modern concept of conservative political power. California tended to lean liberal, but much of its population in the north and east leaned conservative. Texas on the other hand was in large part the bastion of American conservatism. 
In the beginning of the nineteen hundreds, and extending into the nineteen eighties, the conservatives of the old south realized that they were often in the minority in America. That said, there was one sure fire way to win an American election and that was money. At the time, good old-fashioned graft and corruption sufficed. The political bosses in New York, Chicago, and the rest of the country were usually capable of delivering their constituencies, for a price. Men who owed their jobs to the bosses cast their votes as they were told. In Texas, particularly in the southern regions, "Dons" straight out of old western films, herded their "peons" at gun point into the polls. They ensured that whoever they had been hired by won. 
At the time, Texas was full of new money in the form of cattle barons and oil tycoons. Wishing to ensure their continued success, they allied themselves with the conservative Democrats of the old south known as the Dixicrats. When those Democrats were effectively exiled from the Democratic Party in the nineteen-sixties, the southern conservatives did the unthinkable. They joined the Republican Party. The party that one hundred years before, had literally waged war against southern conservatives to end the old debates over states' rights, and slavery. Not only did the conservatives join the GOP, they took it over. In the millennium, the GOP far more resembled the old Confederacy, than the liberal forces of Lincoln. 
The South had been a thorn in the side of the United States for four-hundred years. Conservative to its core, it proudly sat on the ass end of yesterday; insisting that up was down, and that they should be allowed to force the world to bend to their lunacy. For one hundred years the conservatives from the South in the US Senate managed to block virtually every effort to improve the human condition of every day Americans. Oh, they certainly backed the New Deal and the Tennessee River Valley Association; but seek human or civil rights, and they would put a noose around your neck. Then, they would set you one fire while you strangled. Afterwards they might even use your corpse for target practice. 

 

In Nom's mind, there was nothing redeemable about the troglodytes of the old South. They were no better than their ancestors. But where to make his first strike for sanity and good? Arguably the main powerhouse of the South was its churches. The religious leaders had for centuries been the bulwarks of their communities. It had been conservative white evangelical pastors who had led the fight for slavery. 
From fiery pulpits they cried that black Africans were cursed by god and were damned to serve all others since the time of Noah. They used the book of Philemon in the New Testament of their King James' Bibles to insist that not only had their sky fairy sanctioned slavery, but it condemned anyone who tried to free slaves. Slaves that tried to free themselves were even worse. 
It had been the Southern conservative preachers who had been the rallying point for segregation and Jim Crow. They argued that it was a violation of the laws of nature, and perhaps even bestiality for white and black to cross breed. God had brought the savage African to this promised land to be under the benevolent oversight of the white man. It was only the will of Satan to ever bring about equality. Anything else would be an "uneven yoking".
It was the Southern conservative preachers, current and former, who led the charge to deny homosexuals basic human rights: making the act of love a crime, barring them from public service, even military jobs. They sought to force the American Psychiatric Association to bring back the archaic definitions of homosexuality that called it a mental illness, calling for businesses to not serve them, for their children to be seized by the courts, and their marriages declared an illegal abomination against the imaginary sky fairy.
They led the charge to hamstring the education system of America, to make it a criminal offence for a woman to control her own body or to even purchase a sex toy. 
Their concepts of the Prosperity Gospel had led to a revision of the old tax code under President Reagan and all following Republican administrations. Rather than taxing people on the basis of what they could afford, as logic would dictate, the Southern conservative preachers called for the rich to be empowered. The result was a flipping of the tax burden onto the poor and middle class from the rich. They pressed a theory: that tax cuts for the rich would result in that same money trickling down into the hands of the middle class and the poor many times over. Strangely, their deregulation and tax cuts resulted in the income of the top five percent to sky rocket, while the middle class lost their annual battle to beat inflation, and the poor, slipped further and further into poverty. 
The southern conservative preachers of Texas raised massive edifices to themselves in the form of mega churches. Every Sunday victims attended to receive their next brainwashing session en masse. Colloquially these were referred to as worship sessions. A simple name for self-induced highs and mass delusions, resulting in addictions. 
Houston, Texas housed one of the largest of these boils on the ass of humanity, the church of Pastor Joel Ater. Just a week before the Reverend Ater had managed to demonstrate to the world just how literally he took the commandments of his lord and savior. If one were to believe the gospels, then would they not want to follow the teachings of Jesus found there? Feed the hungry? Heal the sick? Minister without judgment to the vilest members of society?
A rational person might think so, but then they would not be familiar with American and especially Southern Christians. When a hurricane came to Houston, "philanthropist" Ater, followed the path of the true Christ. He locked his doors, and refused to let in those in need. They might have soiled his temple to himself after all.
Yes. Nom thought. Joel Ater is the perfect man to start with. The church might be a bit much for a dry run, but it was simply far to cherry an opportunity to pass up.

Death, a Biography, is a fictional horror novel. It is crass, violent, profane, and not meant for the light hearted reader. Imagine living in a world surrounded by fools. For years your frustration grows, and no matter what you try to do you cannot free yourself from the preverbal ideocracy. Nom DePlume is just such a man, only one day he is granted the dearest wish of his heart. Nom, a grad student working as a truck driver is: intelligent, well educated, and the sort of person who always can find a reason to have a chip on his shoulder. One day while driving in Texas he finds that he has the ability to wish death on those he hates. Being scientifically minded, Nom proceeds to experiment searching out the scopes of his new found powers. He begins in Texas, a state he despises. As he moves on from each experiment, he picks his prey to match some facet of modern western life that he hates. Each receive a fate customized to match what Nom feels they did wrong. Nom then travels home to Michigan after initially defining his new role in life. In Michigan he uses his powers to settle a few old scores and family business. A run-in with an old friend convinces him that he is being selfish for not using his god like powers to better mold humanity. The end of the book sees him taking on the leader of the free world. Nom now personifying Death, learns that he has a true foe, Life.Nom will return.

This was his trick; he used the simplest way to sell them. All the books were classified into multiple packages and then they started to sell them to libraries

He called to all the schools and universities in Flagstaff, including elementary schools, high schools, and colleges. He also gave a call to the schools and universities located near Flagstaff.

They only spent a morning selling all the books. Compared to the time they spent classifying the books, it took a much shorter time.

Starting from the afternoon, they drove separately to send out these books and collect the money. They spent the whole afternoon and the second day to clear all the books. Finally, their house and trucks were empty.

Hans counted the money. They invested 10,000 dollars and they earned 49,000 dollars. The net profit was nearly 40,000; indeed, it was a lot.

Li Du patted his shoulder and said happily, "You did a good job. Big Fox, you’ve earned my respect this time."

"I wonder how you view me in your heart," Hans said sourly. "Why did I only get your respect just now?" 

Hannah said, "Don’t you feel ashamed for saying this? Li, you don’t have to praise him. In fact, the biggest contributor is you. The books would have been unable to sell if it weren’t because you chose the hardcover books."

This was the real reason the libraries were willing to take the books; mainly because they were hardcovers and limited edition.

Hardcover books were expensive, and Hans had sold them at a fifth of the market price. That was why libraries were happy to accept the deal. 

Hans felt dissatisfied and said, "My sister, why don’t you say God helped us? Without God’s blessing, we could not have sold them at all."

"Thank God." Hannah took a silver cross from her clothes and kissed it.

Hans was angry and rolled his eyes. "Get out of the way. I'm going to drink a beer."

Li Du said, "Don’t get angry—no matter who is the biggest contributor, you did a good job this time. We should bid for more books."

He scared Hans. "No, never do that unless they are all hardcover books. Otherwise, we will screw things up."

Even if there were hardcover books, he was not willing to do this again. He had worked from the night before last until now. He was exhausted. 

Hans’s cell phone rang after he took a sip of beer.

He answered the call lazily and asked, "Hello, Hans Fox speaking. Who is it?"

Soon, he sat up on the sofa and said, "Yes, yes, I am the one who published the photos online. The original copies are with me. Yes, there are a lot… 

"Yes, there is Egyptian architectures and patterns on the photos. I remember there are some patterns above. Please wait a moment, I’ll check it for you... "

Li Du knew what he meant and immediately took the album over.

Hans described the photos. After he hung up the phone, he looked pleased. "I am the biggest contributor. Guys, I am the biggest contributor!

Li Du asked in surprise, "Someone is interested in the photos? How much are they willing to pay?"

Hans hurried to change clothes and said, "Yes, I think he is really interested. He is willing to pay 4,000 for a photo if they were original copies. However, it seemed like they only interested in the architectural photographs! "

4,000 for a photo. They could earn a total of 160,000!

They were ready to depart after they packed the album. Hans took out the landscape photos and winked at Li Du. "Perhaps we can be profiteers without against the rules!

During the journey, Li Du found out that the man who interested in the photos was a professor from the history department at the University of Arizona. His students saw the pictures which published by Hans on the internet, so they told the professor.

Hans said, "I like dealing with well-educated people. They are easy to talk to."

They were going to the city of Tucson, the second largest city in Arizona; also the most important city in the southern Arizona desert. It was also the place where the University of Arizona was located.

There were several schools that enjoyed great reputation in Arizona. These schools had similar names, such as the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and so on.

Hans was very familiar with this area. They first passed through Phoenix, and eventually, they traveled the same distance to reach Tucson in the afternoon.

Li Du sighed. "This is really a long journey."

Ah Meow smoothed its whiskers with its paws and nodded as if it agreed with this. "Meow!"

Hans did not notice the movements of the ocelot. He reclined on the passenger seat and said, "Although there are a lot of storage units in Tucson, I will not come because we can’t travel so far."

He called the professor and then they planned to meet up in a coffee shop.

When Li Du and the others arrived at the coffee shop, a brawny, middle-aged African American man was drinking coffee with two macho, young African Americans.

Seeing the three people, Li Du asked, "Perhaps we went to the wrong place?"

He thought the three men looked like gangsters, a big boss with two sidekicks.

The middle-aged man stood up and took the initiative to reach out to him. "Lewis, Matt Lewis, a passionate learner of ancient Egyptian history and the civilization of the Euphrates River from the History department of the University of Arizona. Are you Mr. Hans Fox?"

Hans nodded. "Nice to meet you, Professor Lewis. You look very brawny."

The African American laughed, "History needs to be explored. We need to keep our bodies strong to work in archeology. If you think that the scholars are old or weak, then you are wrong."

"You must have made a lot of achievements in archeology." Hans took out the photo album and asked, "Are these things necessary for archeology as well?"

Seeing the album, Lewis’s eyes lit up. He said, "I must look carefully."

Hans took out two photos and passed them to him. He said, "If I am not mistaken, the pictures are worthless. However, some of the words on the pictures are worth a fortune."

There were many buildings on the photo. The buildings appeared damaged and engraved with hieroglyphs.

One of the pictures he took out was of a sphinx without text and another one was of a building. There were some hieroglyphs engraved on the building.

Lewis took the photos and looked at the back side of the them. He held a small lamp with his hand. With the light, two lines of words appeared behind the photo. Li Du had a look at the words and believed that they were written in French.

"Maxime Du Camp and Gustave Flaubert. These are their photos." The black felt satisfied after he had a look at the photos. 

Li Du asked curiously, "Who are they? Are they explorers?"

Lewis shook his head. "No, they are a photographer and a writer. The photographer and writer who first explored ancient Egypt and captured the photos by using photography techniques." 

"According to the history books, Maxime’s father was a wealthy surgeon in France. He came into contact with the camera since youth. It was possible he was one of the first people to come into contact with the camera, as photography techniques had just been invented."

"Between 1849 and 1851, Maxime was funded by the French government to present an in-depth exploration of ancient Egypt with his friend, Flaubert, who was a writer."
　
"They finally reached the desert after they went through all the hardships. Maxime captured a series of legendary photos with his camera and tripod, including the ancient Egyptian pyramids, the Sphinx, and Aswan statue.

They love gold, and they love silver. Even more so, they love gems that dazzle, like stars across the skies. 
Firearms, jewelleries, and precious metals; A collector’s world will not be complete without antiques.  
Storage auctions, old goods trade, re-estate sales and gold-digging. But the truth is, if one wants to make money, then the supreme way is through searching for the legendary treasures. 
Holding the fort, there’s an ocelot, a wolf, and an Andes condor. At the side, there’s a loyal hound, an irascible ape, and an African honey badger. Who said that you can only rely on humans when treasure hunting?! 

White Lion's POV

My office had a safe where I kept my money and my most expensive guns. The safe was hidden behind a huge landscape painting. 


I had a library in here too which had more of my fathers books than mine. He was an avid reader and an intelligent man. It was something I took from him. 

Books opened worlds of Knowledge for me something that was essential in my line of business.  

I was sited on a high chair by a huge mahogany table where I kept my techs and other important documents.  

 Marcus was sited opposite me on one of the smaller visitors sit. 


"Boss." Marcus called me a little loudly pulling me out of my thoughts.  


I had been puffing out smoke, tainting the air when he had called me with worry laced in his voice.

I glared at him from the haze of smoke coming from my cigar. I had invited him to my office downstairs to discuss my plans with him, but I found myself zoning out of the conversation every now and then as thoughts of Mira clouded my mind.

She was alone in the room and I feared that she might try to escape and might even succeed this time around. 



I just hoped that she would do as I had told her to. I didn't want to hurt her. I couldn't. I had never laid my hands on any woman and I definitely didn't  want to start with the woman I love.    

Love.

It was such a strong word to use for something I wasn't sure of yet.

The only reason I remained calm was the tight security I had positioned upstairs.

They were instructed not to hurt her but they were not going to let her go.    

"I was asking what we should do with the Dragon gang, they are still asking for a meeting." Marcus informed, looking concerned. 


He was tall, not as tall as I was but tall enough to look good in my chair. His hair was cut short and wavy, he looked more African- american than Nigerian. He hardly ever looked scary but he could do a clean job with ease and that was why he was the best because you would never expect him to be so bad by just looking at him. 

His looks were so deceitful. A puppy on the outside and a tiger on the inside.

I blew out another smoke and stared at Marcus. "I was the one that called for a meeting with Ken and Jega."

Marcus sat up straight on his chair. His eyes widened in shock. "Why boss? You don't like Ken for anything and you hate Jega, why call them? We don't need them."

I inhaled in smoke and took it out through my mouth. "I want out Marcus." I said glaring at him through hooded eyes. I wanted to gorge out every bit of his reaction. 

"You want out of what Boss?" Marcus asked, confusion evident in his demeanor.

"I want out of this life. I want to live a crime free life, I want out of the name White Lion." 

Marcus stared at me, his eyes were filled with questions, anger and uncertainty. "Is it because of that girl, Marian?" He asked me. "Why do you.  I don't understand." He stammered.

"Mira." I corrected. He was scared and I was too. Although we both feared different things.  


"And yes, it is because of her. I want her with every fibre of my being and I have thought of a way to get her." I repeated everything I had said to Sophia to Marcus and he listened with apt attention while shaking his head in disapproval.

"You are not serious Boss, are you?" Marcus asked me with wide eyes. "This is insane! You can't do this. We need you! I need you."

"Marcus I tell you these things not so that you can tell me what to or what not to do. I need your support not your opinion. So are you in or out?"

Marcus laughed nervously. A tensed silence enveloped us as he stared at me with rage filled eyes.

But I knew he wasn't angry. He was only afraid.  


 "I am in. Always in with whatever you plan but I can't lead this gang with Sophia. She vexes me."

"Let's talk about that later." I chuckled, rolling my eyes. I took out another cigarette from the box and put out the one I was holding.

"Marcus. You can be King. You have what it takes." I encouraged.

He smiled at me but it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Whatever you say boss."

He was conflicted that I could tell but he wasn't ladened with so much choices anyway.  


 "Tomorrow is going to be a long day". I thought as I watched Marcus leave my office like the weight of the world was suddenly dropped on his shoulders.

Maybe it was, for my shoes were impossible to fit in. I did believe in Marcus though. He would do a good job.

The virgin who stole the gang leaders heart.


"You kill all the people that touch me for touching me only? Or is it just a habit of yours_ Killing people?" I dared to ask.

 I was shaking so bad and my hands were sweaty. I was visibly perspirating even though the Ac was on. Still, I just needed to get all these questions of my chest. He was acting so strange and mad. I knew that I would end up dead either ways. Whether I spoke up against him or not I was still going to end up dead. So why be silent?

He started walking towards me, and with each step he took further I took one back in fear and desperation to create space between us, until I was backed up against the wall. He stood so close to me now I was practically breathing his air. 

"Like I told you in the very beginning when we first met, You're mine! And when something is mine no one touches it. So when another man wants to touch you beg him to stop not for your sake but for his. No matter how many they are or how minute the touch is they will end up below the ground the moment they do. You are mine."

The West Asian and African Generals silently gazed at the recruits beside them.
Today, not only had aerial combat recruits come, the mobile armor recruits had come as well. Everyone wanted to watch the scene of Qin Fen being defeated.
However, no one had expected that Qin Fen would win, and win so cleanly at that. He won in such a terrifying way that it gave rise to a helpless feeling in his other opponents.
In the quiet arena, the African and West Asian recruits silently gazed at each other. They were unable to see through Qin Fen's piloting skills. Clearly, he didn't have an amazing hand speed yet it gave the feeling that they were unable to beat him.
Admit defeat? West Asian and African Generals secretly shook their heads. Today, Qin Fen alone swept the entire American Aerial Combat Team using just one hand. If they admitted defeat and surrendered to him today, then the pressure from his previous two successive defeats would completely disappear without a trace. However, his momentum would reach an unprecedented height, like a volcanic eruption, thus driving the momentum for all East Asian recruits to climb up collectively.
The recruit competition didn't just involve these events. Events like Electronic warfare, Warship Simulation Command and Confrontation were also there. These were the fields that Qin Fen had never touched. If they admitted defeat now, it would definitely affect the morale of the recruits participating in such events.
Should we fight!? The corner of the West Asian and African Generals eyes and lips rose into a wry smile. What could they take out to fight with him? He does so by falling back on early tutoring sessions from his late-father at the age of four. He is also a gamer, always keeping a Nintando console in his pocket and creating a gaming blog at the age of nine. He is nerdy enough to not fall into any stereotypes, aside from playing games and wearing glasses.

Born in America and growing up in London with strict parents (one born in the UK and the other US), she moved back to America at the age of twelve. Since the sixth grade, her peers have continued to call her "Know-all" not only because of the similarity with her last name, but also her advanced academics. She also fits the stereotype of a science nerd and bookworm, never seen not carrying a book and factually correcting people if they say anything wrong in the slightest.

Age 18, Hispanic-American
Max's older brother, Anthony is seen as a well-rounded high school senior. What attributes this image is the respect he receives from his peers (even underclassmen) and his role as the hall monitor. Anthony is also very studious, tying with Bianca when it comes to the school's most academic student. The two are members of their school's decathlon and robotics club. In order to keep his image, Anthony constantly showcases skills of leadership and well-roundedness. 


Max Ramirez
Age 14, Hispanic-American
Anthony's younger brother, Max is seen as nothing but a delinquent throughout the majority of his years at school. He is never seen not carrying a longboard attached to his backpack. He is also known to plan and carry out daredevil stunts (for example, rolling down a ramp on the school roof in a Wall-mart cart). Very girl-obsessed, Max is also known to ask out any attractive girl that he sees, an unbroken routine that's lasted as early as middle school.

Age 15, Can Mimic Any Race
Astrid is seen in the real-world as a video game character who has the ability to shape-shift. Her default design is very tribal and humanoid: purple skin, a tail, pointy ears and fangs with tribal clothing. Finding herself in our world, she slowly fits into normal customs by letting go of her predatorily instincts (commonly used as a defense tactic in her world), growing an attraction to Max while staying with the Ramirez brothers, and, ironically, becoming a gamer.

Kieren's younger sister, Keziah is an athletic and studious student. Commonly hanging out with well-known peers in her grade because of these traits, Keziah still takes time to mostly hang out with her best friend named Gums (Gum-Gum for short). 14-year-old Kieren Freeman, aka esports gamer Kieren The Game Blogger, decreases in popularity after losing a championship finale to a noob player. Shortly living the day-to-day life of any high school freshman, Kieren soon receives the ability to summon and wield a katana like an RPG character. This is from the result of investigating un-concluded research from his late-father Professor Jeroham Freeman. Kieren must now protect his friends and family from multi-universal, video game creatures.

"Men and women would put their hair in a hot chemical mixture that would almost burn their scalp, so they could comb it back and make it look more European and silky." Many blacks argue that imitating European standards of beauty and grooming were necessary for blacks to be accepted by nationalities culture, especially by potential masters and employers. For generations hairstyles have reflected the history of American race relations, and the way blacks wore their hair reflected the dominant nationalities culture. African-American hair was straightened, combed, or parted to mimic Western coiffures. In response to the propaganda in black communities to accept the European standards of beauty, the black hair care market expanded. Socially, hair grooming played a significant part in status and identity in tribes. Therefore, it was very important for the head female in each family to be very skilled in creating the appropriate styles and teaching this craft to their daughters. It was considered a big deal to wear your hair neat and groomed, hair worn out loosely was looked upon as someone mentally unstable, filthy, or in mourning. . In the early 1900s, Annie Malone and Madam C.J. Walker started to develop products that targeted the want for straighter hair. Annie Malone sold a "Wonderful Hair Grower" treatment product and promoted the use of the hot comb through her Poro Company. While still far from enjoyable, the electrical hot comb was a gentler alternative to previous heated straightening methods. Starting in 1905, Madam C.J. Walker became a self-made millionaire with her home remedy for hair and scalp issues, the infamous "Walker Method," which combined a heated comb with pomade. In the 1960s and '70s, came the rise of the natural hair movement that encouraged black communities to accept their hair and turn away from damaging products.  
With political activists such as Angela Davis, Huey P. Newton and Jesse Jackson proudly rocking Afros while fighting oppression, the hairstyle quickly emerged as a symbol for black beauty, liberation and pride. Today, black women with nappy hair — that is, natural and chemical-free — are desirable despite the popular discourse to the contrary. The first misconception is that natural hair is "dirty". The second is that natural hair do grow (hence the obsession with hair length, hair extensions and dreadlocks). Many black women and men who wear weaves and relax their hair will explain their choice by either saying that their natural hair is "unmanageable" or that natural hair is "dirty." This is one of the most enduring stereotypes about black hair. During slavery, hair styles and maintenance changed because the identity of the black woman changed. For one thing, on some plantations slave women were not allowed to wear anything but scarves. Some southern states made scarves a requirement for slave women to distinguish them from free black women. Headscarves were associated with low status and destitution. It was an ugly mark of inferiority. But scarves weren't the only way that slave women were made to feel aesthetically inferior. Without access to proper hair care products of the day, many slave women resorted to using toxic substances like kerosene, butter, and animal fat on their fragile strands. No distinctions are made for race or ethnicity, only gender, in that the regulations regarding hair are divided between women and men. But it's not hard to infer that certain sections pertain specifically to black women, since they refer to hairstyles like cornrows, braids, twists and dreadlocks, severely limiting or banning them outright. Now more Black women have been embracing their natural hair textures. Natural hair care lines have been booming. There are products created for all hair types and textures. There is a rise in the black self-love, embracing all physical features that were labeled ugly by non-black culture. Our hair defies gravity and we have to own it and love it. It is a part of who we are and where we came from! Love your natural self, regardless of what others say. Contrary to protective hairstyles, many methods to straighten kinky hair lead to breakage and could result in permanent damage. Hot combs, perms and relaxers all will straighten kinky hair, but can also cause burns. The most potent are relaxer creams that chemically straighten hair. The active agents are usually alkali or ammonium thioglycolate, which can result in serious acid burns, bald patches, scars and infections if improperly used. A famous scene in the Chris Rock documentary "Good Hair"shows an entire soda can being dissolved in a relaxer-based solution.  Men would go to the Barbers to groom themselves and women would go to the salon to get their hair done. However in early 20th century, braided hair and cornrows portrayed low status and was associated with those who lived in rural areas. As the black hair community got stronger women would create hair events to gather black women not to be ashamed and be proud of who they are as their hair shouldn't represent their status and personality. Black hair is beautiful especially when it is in its natural state and this is the idea that a lot of women from the African diaspora are starting to embrace in today's society. The self-hate stereotype stems from the notion, likely popularized by Malcolm X that Black people who straighten their hair have internalized beauty standards that are intrinsically biased towards Eurocentric physical attributes. I still hold onto the memories of those home beauticians wielding that hot comb! As a young girl, I spent many Saturday afternoons screaming the top of my lungs while she tamed my wild, kinky hair with a hot straightening comb. The tears flowed as soon as she spread pomade along my hairline, ears while burying my head in her lap so she could get to the rough edges around the nape of my neck called the "kitchen." "Hold still, girl," she would say as she ran the hot metal comb through my hair. She'd also clean up our napes, and we were always told, "hold your ear!" However much we cringed at the steam rising, or the hiss and pop the hot comb made when it touched our strands, we always left the house looking fresher than a crisp $2 bill. . To test the heat of the comb, many people recommend using a paper towel (not the really cheap thin ones) and holding it against the instrument. If the paper begins to burn, then it's obvious that the comb is waaay too hot. And just as you wouldn't want a scorching hot flat iron on your strands (for your hair and your hand's benefit), you sure don't want a searing hot comb passing through your head, close to your scalp. Not only can it burn your hair, but that can also lead to hair loss. My mother will called this a touch up in between perming my hair. Could not enjoy my pool time with family and  friends because my hair will be ruined after the water hits it. I have not had my hair "dyed, fired, and laid to the side" in years. I wear it naturally or in braids now. Today I can still smell the hot comb on the stove heating up.
Glad to be without perm or hot comb, happy to be nappy.
