"R-rated romance movies aren't for everyone. How about a change of subject, since you look a little uncomfortable: What's your favorite book series?"
"I am currently reading Ian Fleming's 'Casino Royale'. The first installment of the James Bond series. Pretty much anything action, adventure, or mystery. Some of my all-time favorite series include Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson, J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter, and Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider. I also enjoy 'Lord of the Rings', 'The Chronicles of Narnia', Encyclopedia Brown, Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, and may others. What about you?"
"I've always enjoyed the classic dystopian sci-fi novels, such as '1984', 'Animal Farm', 'I, Robot', 'Dune', and 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'. My mom also insisted that I read Jane Austen, Nicholas Sparks, and other romance authors. That's how I got into E. L. James and J. Kenner."
"So, you're a nerd and a romantic." I catch myself giggling a bit. {Gosh, what is this man doing to me. I've become a blushing schoolgirl.}
"Fine, go ahead. Make fun of me. But in my defense Orwell and Asimov are good writers. And you can't tell me that 'Pride and Prejudice' isn't a good book. It has history and finesse. What more could you want?"
"Okay, okay! I didn't mean to offend you, I'm just surprised is all."
"What, that I read romance novels?"
"No. That you read actual books."
"Harsh. But understandable. Most actors and celebrities don't portray themselves in a way that suggests any of us have the time or willingness to sit and read anything other than tabloid articles about ourselves."
We continue to talk about books for a while. Both pizzas were amazing. All good things must come to an end though. Austin takes me home and kisses me goodnight. It's an unexpected, but soft and gentle kiss. {Wow. I guess a second date isn't out of the question then.}
"Goodnight, Alexandra."
"Goodnight." {Something about the way he says my name in that dark accent of his drives me wild. I just hope that he doesn't notice.}
I take a shower I notice a new text from Austin. [Hey, I had a good time tonight. Would you like to go on a second date? I was thinking we could go to the movies sometime during the next week.] {Maybe it's best I leave that for tomorrow morning. That way I'm not making a hasty decision, right?}
 
When I woke up, I responded to Austin's text: [I have a commission due at the end of the week, but I think I can spare enough time for a date.]
[Good. Let's say Friday at 6?]
[Sounds like a plan.]
[It's a date then. 😉]
I call my mom, as I do almost every Sunday. She is excited that I've actually gone out on a date for once. Everything is going well at home, and we are all set for dinner tonight. She tells me to invite Zach, and I agree that it would be good for him after dinner with his mother.
I decide to go talk to him in person and drive over to his apartment.
"Hey. I wasn't expecting you today. Is everything alright?"
"Yeah. My mom invited you to dinner tonight. I told her about dinner with your mother the other day."
"Okay." He laughs a bit, and I can't help but smile. "I'll go to dinner with you and your family."
"I will text her to let her know."
"Uh… just out of curiosity, how was your date with Austin last night?"
"It was great! Have you heard of Pizza Pi? Their mac'n'cheese pizza is surprisingly amazing."
"Pi as in 3.14?"
"Yep. Kinda funny if you think about it."
"I think Sam said something about that place at some point. Maybe it had something to do with one of her dates. I can never keep them all straight. Anyway, how did it go? Do you have a second date lined up?"
"Actually, yes. Friday at 6. I believe we are headed to a movie theater."
"That sounds like fun. I'm glad you had a good time. Speaking of time, we should probably get going before your parents start to worry about your whereabouts."

Alexandra Kay Moran is a freelance artist and interior designer.

Zackary  Holland is Alex's Best friend, and is an officer of the Central City Police Department.

Austin King is an actor playing a motorcycle cop in a TV series being filmed in Central City.

Austin hires Alex to redesign his new apartment, and her life is never the same again.

After they decided to see each other tomorrow, Su Feng removed the tray of pastries from the oven and wrapped them together. Song Jun strode down the stairs with an annoyed Jinyi. 

At the same time, Qian Meigui had walked in from her day of errands. Song Ren knew that she went to visit the old book store, but she wondered where her sister went for the rest of the day.

"Ah, perfect," Song Jun said, "Xiao Mei, we're all going to watch a movie."

"All right," responded Qian Meigui. 

"Su Feng and Ren, join us." 

Su Feng agreed immediately, but Song Ren hesitated. Even though it was a long day, she never missed an opportunity to spend time with family. 

The twins sat on the floor in front of the television to get a better view. Qian Meigui sat on one end of the sofa directed to the t.v while Song Ren sat next to her and Su Feng joined them on the other end. Together they watched a dystopian film as Song Jun was always a fan of science-fiction type movies about futures that could happen. 

Halfway throughout the movie, Song Ren felt sleepy, as she worked all day and keeping her eyes opened required effort. Slowly, her head felt heavy, and she drifted into a slumber. 

The movie was approaching to an end when Su Feng felt something hefty on the side of his arm. He glanced over to see Song Ren fast asleep with a peaceful expression. Her long hair cascaded over her shoulders, her eyelashes fluttered, and her breathing deepened. His heart stopped. What was this feeling? 

She made an excellent first impression when they met, but she always acted cold, aloof, and arrogant around him, which is why he conjured ways to torment her. 

Now, she lowered her guard, which is a rare sight to witness. He shared the same values as her; their marriage would solely be a transaction. In some ways, he admired her for it. He knew that he wanted a woman that cared about the business as much as him, but now something felt different. He felt like doting on her. 

When the movie was over, Song Jinyi and Song Jun went to bed immediately. Qian Meigui rose and said, "Can you take Song Ren to bed?"

"What?" Su Feng questioned, puzzled. 

"Well, I can't carry her. She's heavy."

"I don't even know where her room is," he responded. 

" It's the second floor, down the hall, last room on the right." 

Su, Feng nodded. Qian Meigui smiled, and they bid goodnight. 

Su Feng was afraid of waking Ren, so he kept still even after the television turned off, even after the hall lights dimmed and the only thing that emitted light were the rays of the moon from the floor-to-ceiling windows. 

He glanced at her once more and at the moment, she shifted. Su Feng thought she woke up but instead, she buried herself in his arm. Therefore he lifted it to give her more space. But she ended up nudging him into a half-embrace. 

Su Feng held her and breathed in her scent. Her body smelled very sweet, like oranges and roses, and her hair smelled like apples. He could not help but wondered if their married life was going to contain more moments like this. But he shut out the thought, afraid of his pale feelings shifting. 

Su Feng shifted and rose from their position. He picked her up gently and carried her in his arms. He walked up to the stairs, down the hall, and found her room. 

The walls of her room filled with textbooks about biology, forensics, anatomy and medicine, it showed how hard she studied. Her walls also had pictures of her teenage years. 

He approached her queen-sized bed and laid her down gently. He realized that she was still wearing her business clothing, but he could not do anything about it. So he covered her with a blanket when she curled up comfortably. He noticed the satisfied expression, and he loosed a silent breath in relief. 

Su Feng wanted to return to his room, but something rooted him to the ground. He glanced at her once more, and her long black hair framed her beautifully. 

When they both graduated, they rarely had opportunities to see each other. Occasionally they did, but when he heard that Song Ren was the heiress of Song Pharmaceuticals, he knew his father would propose them to marry.

If Song Sheng were the successor, both companies would remain rivals; then Song Ren would never belong to him. He gritted his teeth in frustration at the thought, but he gazed at the girl in front of him and calmed down. 

Su Feng never understood the concept of love or being devoted to one person. But when he gazed at the girl in front of him, he felt unsettled. 

Su Feng wondered why she stirred so much excitement whenever he saw or encountered her. He liked it when she spoke back to him; he liked it when she made those faces of annoyance at him. And yet, why did it feel as if he was bewitched? 

He realized now that he was in love with her.

She is in love with her adoptive brother, who, in return, conceals his feelings for her, afraid that if they caved in, the consequences would be devastating. Their feelings and desire flourish as the development goes on. They try not to act on their impulsive urges, but they can't help it if they're in love.

Do you hear that sound off in the distance?

It sounds almost like something, or someone is calling out. 

Trying to grab somethings' attention.

Or is it an echo of what was here before?

Of what was left behind? 

If it is an echo I can't help but wonder how does it know my name? As I am sitting alone in the dark hearing sounds nobody should be able to while having to dare myself not to turn around to look for it. After All, If you turn around you may not like what it is that you see. Having the sound reverberate around inside of my head makes me question every noise I hear around me. It doesn't take long for the unnerving feeling of being watched by something to become overwhelming. 

Out of the corner of my eye, I can't help but feel like something is there. 

Something that is missing. 

Something I should be able to notice. 

After a while of double-checking every corner and spare space around me, I can't help but feel that I am becoming paranoid. It has to be that my mind is playing tricks on me again. There is no other logical reason for it to be anything else. Maybe it's all of the movies I have been watching lately, or maybe it's all of the fantasy and dystopian books that have somehow found themselves on my bookshelf over the years. 

Even with those reassuring thoughts I can't help but feel the phantom traces of nails climbing down my back. Almost as if they were petting me in a similar manner as the cats you see accompanying villains while they are planning their nefarious deeds. Praising me for giving them life with such thoughts. 

As I continue on I do my best to not give my own creations power over myself, but my lonesome presence in the dark allows them to pray on my deepest darkest fears. The creatures from my imagination playout through my head, my nightmares, and do their best to make their way into my reality.  

They call out my name almost as if saying, "We're here" at every inopportune moment. Hovering over me like a shadow following me and building on my thoughts and experiences. Collecting themselves as a pandemonium* to either attack me or be used for my own purposes. Becoming my personal army of chaos to either spread or create. 

Sometimes they leave for a while, but they always find their way back home when I least expect it. Showing up in a nightmare hunting me down to tell me they have found their way back to me again. Leaving me in a state of paralysis as I try to fight myself awake. The more I fight the worse the struggle becomes as I almost find my way out and just as I am about to leave I get sucked back in again. 

Most of them come back the same way we met before: a closed closet, a doctor's office, going through the woods, or just simply stalking. Their faces change from time to time but their overall features are usually the same. No eyes, blood pouring out from everywhere, wounds all over their bodies, and surrounded in darkness. There have been a couple of exceptions like the one time I was being hunted by a giant man-eating tree. 

Some of them like to talk to me every once in an awhile while I dream normally spitting accusations at me about things I have no idea about. Their words can be distracting and overwhelming putting me in a state of panic. Leaving me with the inability to overcome the sensation until I find myself in the warm embrace of another. 

They like to hide when in the presence of another person staying quiet almost as if not to cause suspicion of their existence. Showing themselves best in the dark in pixilated black seeming to move in the shadows around me. 

Circling me from my left and right. 
Casting a shadow on the ceiling.

 Causing creaks in the floorboards.
 Making its presence known to hearing ears. 

Forcing its self next to me making its presence known to closed eyes. 
Having its body interact with mine. 

As soon as I leave the dark and make my way into the light they disguise their presence waiting to see me another day. All except one, the presence that physically interacts with me take some more convincing. Talking to another or hearing a human voice pushes it away and keeps it a bay for another day. 

Noise has always helped to keep away my thoughts, keeping them away from my roaming thoughts, it has always been that way. I wait for the sun to rise to bring me solace before I can sleep. The beautiful sight of a sunrise with the morning dew on the grass shining in all of its glory. I can truly say that I have never seen such a beautiful sight. 

But alass it is only 4:45 AM and I still have time until sunrise. 

I will wait with my horde for the sun to rise. 

I will wait for its presence to put us to sleep. 

Leaving the echo of their presence behind them. 

Waiting for us to reunite.

Contemplating his life after finishing a long day at the job he hated, Willie Smiles couldn't help but look back at all of the opportunities for riches there were during his age of growing up. Born in 1970, he lived during rise of media, the golden age of Hollywood, and even the advent of the Internet age.
Growing up as a single child in a wealthy family, he grew up with no absurd desires and thought he could enjoy his comfortable lifestyle for the rest of his life. That came to an abrupt end when his parents both got into a plane crash traveling abroad when he was just 16 years old.
At the time, he was still in a boarding school and only contacted his parents weekly. The abrupt death of them kicked Willie into an endless spiral of regrets and depression.
From that day on, his mental health depended on daydreaming about his parents still being alive. His chunky inheritance was spent on alcohol and drugs that helped him cope with the reality that his parents were gone.
The only thing other things that accompanied him in his dystopian of daydreams, drugs, and alcohol were the the movies and TV shows that distracted him from his unpleasant situation.
As he fell asleep drunk, he couldn't help picturing if he could back to when he was 16 years old. Before the plane crash and when he happily enjoyed his parents' company.
He imagined himself making billions off of his knowledge of the future and the proud look of his parents' faces.
This is how he normally cried himself to sleep, closing his eyes and fading into his dreams.
Except this time something incredible happened.

As Willie opened his eyes, he felt like his surroundings were a bit off. There was no longer that beer like oder that he was used to having in his mouth. He also felt the presence of a bunch of other people.
Looking around, he saw the familiar classroom and faces from his days in high school. Wasn't this Mr. Willow's class that he took in Junior year. His face couldn't help but show a confused and queer expression. He quickly gathered his thoughts and realized what might be happening.
But thinking of the one possibility Willie hoped for most, he felt like he was still dreaming. After recognizing that it was real, he felt lost for a second.
His dreams of going back to his youth were finally realized. Willie wasn't religious or anything but he couldn't help but thank God.
His somewhat strange expression didn't escape from his best friend Jackson.
The best way to describe Jackson would be serious with a good sense of humor. Growing up as an orphan, he coped with his troubles through hard work and laughter. He got into Willie's boarding school through a scholarship program for gifted children.
Jackson couldn't help himself from smiling a little bit once he saw the silly expression on Willie's face, "Lol, you look like you just saw a talking dog. You got to stop falling asleep in class, though or Mr. Willow will probably call you out on it."
Willie didn't have many friends in high school, but Jackson was definitely his closest. It's too bad that they grew distant after going to different colleges.
They still contacted each other monthly, but weren't as close compared to their relationship in high school.
Willie looked at Jackson for a second, then hurriedly asked, "What's the date today?"
Jackson looked at him funny and replied, "January 23rd, we just got back from winter break. What's the matter with you?"
"Nothing. I am just a bit confused from waking up, but I also just remembered I have to do something. I need to go contact my parents."
Willie didn't have time to deal with the follow-ups of Jackson and quickly excused himself the classroom to head for the student dormitory where he could access a landline.
Willie's mind couldn't stop ringing when he heard January 23rd. Just about 2 weeks before the death of his parents.
He couldn't wait to call home and hear his parents' voices again. Although his boarding school was in the suburbs of California, he grew up in the Upper East Side of New York.
His parents started their own fashion company called Smiley Co. when they were younger. His dad, Richard Smiles, handled the business and financial matters, while his mom, Amy Smiles helped manage the company and design clothes.
After years of hard work, their company had risen to a value of $100 million when they decided to sell 20% of the shares.
This gave them about $20 million in liquid assets, which they used to invest in New York real estate.
This is where his family's real fortune came from. Although his parents have worked hard to spread Smiley clothes to the major cities, most of their income still came from renting out the buildings they owned.
Dialing his home phone number, he could help but stand there nervously. He actually didn't believe they would be home at this time, but he still had some hope that one of them would answer.
Then, the phone clicked and he hard the familiar voice of his mother coming through, "Hello Smiles Residence, this is Amy Smiles speaking. Who is this?"
Willie couldn't help croaking out, "Mom."

Willie Smiles couldn't believe he was reborn back to 1986, when he was just 16 years old.

Safety first. Chen Xin should have turned on his car lights. However, he hesitated because he did not want to expose his location. He drove in the dark with the lights off to avoid any trouble.
Thankfully, it was like late evening. Chen Xin could still see the roads clearly.
Chen Xin lived in the suburbs, in bigger cities they would call it the countryside suburbs. His home was in a small town toward the south, so compared to big cities he was living in the middle of nowhere. There was not a lot of residences around, only a few farmers, it was like a quiet Townsville.
Chen Xin loved the quiet of the countryside. He initially away from the city so he could focus on writing novels.
Thankfully, Vermillion was great at building roads. The place where he lived was near a railway station so the roads were well constructed making his drive all the way to the city worry-free.
The city streets were empty. It was not like those Hollywood apocalypse movies where cars were abandoned everywhere.
This was what the apocalypse looked like in real life. Humans were informed of the meteorite three months prior to impact, everyone was evacuated into the government shelter. Why would the streets be filled with abandoned cars?
If abandoned cars were seen, it meant that someone encountered a roadblock or a trap.
There were no cars on the road, so Chen Xin did not face any problems driving to the city area. 
He left two tire tracks on the road due to the was white dust everywhere. Chen Xin looked at the cloud of ashy dust and felt a heavy pull in his heart.
It was the ashes of the firestorm caused by the meteorite impact.
Usually, he would pass by a river when heading towards the city area. It was not as beautiful as mother nature, but it was still an eco-friendly city and was even nominated as a great environmental city. 
It was all gone.
The green mountains on the side of the roads were pitch black and covered in ash. It looked like charcoal with sprinkled snow on it. The plants were twisted like a horror movie, it was ugly and terrifying.
The river was dried up, revealing a huge ditch. The bottom of the ditch had a blackish yellow tar. It looked like the infamous Deatholme in World of Warcraft.
Chen Xin was familiar with this river. It was near his house, he used to come here on summertime nights to chill, he even walked with girls here too.
The river was nigh unrecognizable. The high-quality wooden sidewalk was completely burnt with a few cement columns left.
Chen Xin slowed down and looked at it sadly.
The river was dried up, what about the things around the river? Chen Xin did not need to check it out to know everything was burned to the ground.
Thankfully, the bridge connected to the city was still intact. The fire did not affect it, or else Chen Xin would not be able to enter the city.
The city area did not fare any better than the suburbs.
The beautiful eco-constructions were burned until there were only cement vases and uncharred trees. Road signs were burned until there was nothing left, even metal was burned to the ground, forming puddles of melted steel.
A few stores Chen Xin used to frequent were also burned. The doors were melted and charred black.
Chen Xin now felt the effects of the end of the world. It was like he time-traveled to a dystopian future.
All the things he used to know, the lights, the busy streets, the skyscrapers, were all gone. The things he was familiar with, seemed so fragile in the face of the apocalypse.
It was like a beautiful china vase. It was so stunning until it was dropped on the floor.
Chen Xin always looked at war photos and documentaries for novel material reference, he was indifferent to a world in chaos. However, now that it happened to him in real life, he did not know what he had until he lost it.
It was too late now, everything he knew was gone. A new generation of survivors was needed to rebuild their homes on this charred apocalyptic ground.
Too bad it was only possible under non-apocalyptic circumstances. The temperature would only get colder. The world would stay in the dark and freeze eventually, it was the new ice age.
Rebuilding was harder than it sounds at that point.
Cement would freeze up before it was stirred, the ground could not be dug into, all the rivers and oceans would be frozen into ice…
Earth was like a big refrigerator if there was no sunlight. Humans might not survive this after all.
Rebuilding their home… might be something Chen Xin would never witness for the rest of his life.
However, Chen Xin should not think about that, it was not completely the end of the world despite doomsday already being here. It could be said that this was the last resort for humanity.
As a survivor, he should try his best to gather supplies and resources. He needed to secure his bunker before the world froze completely.
Chen Xin had a safe underground bunker and he picked up the survivor system. Staying alive was his number one priority.
He needed to survive and needed to live more comfortably. That was all he needed to think about.


The dust thrown into the atmosphere by the impact obscured the sky and plunged the world into an Ice Age that would last for hundreds of years without sunlight.
Because of the lack of sunlight, Earth's surface had fallen to extreme cold temperatures down to tens of degrees below zero. 
Facing impending doom, Chen Xin was left with a shelter that he built underground and an upgrade system he found. How would he survive the crisis?
Could human civilization prevail? Would the embers of hope be enough to illuminate the cold night and bring warmth to mankind?
Destiny had brought forward a harsh trial. Could human beings avoid sharing the same fate as those of the dinosaurs that were extinct?
