The world has changed.  Humans are stilled at adapting to there environments. They create cloths, weapons, buildings that allow them to adapt to a changing environment quicker than any other living things on earth. What if Evolution was accelerated for all living things on earth.  No longer is it required to wait generation for major changes to happen to genetic structure, but it happens instantaneously. Could human's adaptation keep up, or would they have to embrace this new world by taping into their own genetics and evolve themselves.

The boarding students’ morning began with no surprises. Since morning attendance was already recorded, some students arrived to class at 6:30 AM.
Chang’s eyes were droopy as he woke up at dawn. He woke up the snoring Pangzi and glasses-man who stayed up all night reading his novel. He slowly moved to to the bathroom with his toiletries to wash up.
Being a good student, Tao had left before the rest of them had even woken up. After putting on his school uniform, Chang left the dorm and stood in front of the gate. The hazy sky was reflected in his eyes.
It was usually never foggy in summer mornings, but over the past two years, the fog had become a normal occurrence. What was stranger was that the fog had a constant pink tinge.
However, if anything strange lasted for a long time, no one would pay attention to it after a while. The weather forecast said it was a normal "cloud condensation" phenomenon. If the fog was harmless, normal people wouldn’t care about it. They were more worried about how to squish onto the crowded buses.
Walking across the campus, Chang’s back disappeared in the fog, and his mouth and nose were overwhelmed with the sweet scent in the fog.
He began studying when he arrived at the classroom.
He was drowsy and groggy.
As morning passed, Chang didn’t remember what he read, despite him reading aloud. He felt that the life he was living was tedious and repetitive. Anyone living a monotonous life like his would feel as it if were the same as living the life of the walking dead.
Deep down in Chang’s heart, he craved for change. He looked out the window and saw the pink fog as he finished his breakfast in a daze.
After breakfast, the first class began. It was biology class.
Starting from last year, Biology had become a mandatory course in high school, regardless of the degree, whether it be art or science. The oddest part was that it became a primary course, because the portion that this subject covered in the entrance examination was insanely large.
No one would’ve ever anticipated it, but the sudden policy change made Biology a particularly important subject. Fortunately, Chang enjoyed studying Biology, so he paid extra attention to the first class.
"Today, we will once again review some key chapters—ones you will definitely see in the college entrance examination. We will begin with the Cambrian Explosion. This concept has been on the exam for two consecutive years, so it is worthwhile to remember everything about it."
The teacher who passed by Chang’s dorm last night was on the podium. He was young and seemed kind, and he wore black-rimmed glasses today. He didn’t talk much in the lecture, but he covered the most important topics.
"The Cambrian Explosion is one of the ten myths of modern science. Can the individual sitting next to the sleeping student please wake him up and tell him to explain the Cambrian Explosion?"
The biology teacher pointed at the kid sitting beside Chang, so Chang woke up glasses-man.
"The teacher is asking you what happened in the Cambrian Explosion." Prodding glasses-man with his elbow, Chang whispered the teacher's question to his desk mate.
Still half-asleep, glasses-man reluctantly stood up, adjusted and cleaned his glasses using his shirt, and then murmured, "The Cambrian Explosion probably happened hundreds of million years ago. It was a short and sudden evolutionary event. Evolutionary speeds were hundreds of millions of times faster during this event. According to my memory, there were no mammals or plants prior to this, but after that event, the species we know about today appeared on Earth for the first time."
"Hundreds of millions of years ago? What has changed in species morphology? These are key concepts. You also have to remember specific years." The teacher waved his hands, allowing glasses-man to sit down.
"While your summary was not bad, pay attention in particular to the time period of the Cambrian Explosion. Not only did all species evolve much quicker, but new species were also born at unimaginable speeds. The ancestors of modern species all came from that period. Sponges, coelenterates, priapulida, lobopodia, brachiopods, molluscs, arthropods, echinoderms, chordates and more all evolved in that era."
"Such amazing creatures! The Cambrian Explosion is a strong piece of evidence against Darwin's Theory of Evolution, and Darwin himself had been wondering about that, too."
"Sir, are you criticizing Darwinism?" A loud voice came from the corner of the classroom; it was Tao.
"Uh, yes. Do you have a problem?" The teacher smiled and said, "Well, there are three levels of arguments: Hypothesis, Theory and Law. Darwin's Theory of Evolution was just a theory, so why can’t I criticize it? You can certainly criticize a theory—even Darwin himself criticized his own theory."
"Since we’ve discussed this, it wouldn’t be harmful to mention the reasons why the Cambrian Explosion occurred."
"The main stream academic notion for the Cambrian Explosion is that the sudden abundance of free oxygen resulted in a large number of species rapidly evolving. However, I think this argument is flawed. With only free oxygen, how could species evolve that much in a short period of time?"
While he was making his statement, the classroom darkened in seconds.
"What’s going on?" Chang looked out the window.
The fog outside the window was getting dense! That was why it suddenly became dark. The pink fog didn’t dissipate, but rather grew thicker. The fog filled the entire world outside the building as if a giant piece of cotton had expanded in air.
Perhaps it was because the fog was getting thicker, but for some reason, the pink fog now turned into an oxblood-red colour. The world turned bloody red at a noticeable pace. The sun was completely blocked and the whole world sunk into edgeless darkness.
More accurately, with the oxblood red fog covering the sky, the world now looked like a territory with patches of black and red scattered randomly.
The bizarre colours gave Chang shivers. As he turned around, he realized that his classmates’ faces had become blurred in the black and red fog.
Normally if it was dark, some naughty kids would take the opportunity to tease the girls, but no one even dared to speak at this moment. Everyone had seen this world in darkness before, but never as a bloody red colour.
All the students were deeply terrified. Their faces explained everything, and the classroom was overwhelmed with silence.
"I will go to the office to see what is going on." In this solemn atmosphere, the biology teacher broke the silence.
He left with those words, and then his figure immediately disappeared into the red fog.
"Look, the fog is sneaking through the seams of the doors and windows," one student screamed. The fog was opaque; it was clearly visible to the students.
Glasses-man subconsciously covered his nose and mouth after seeing this scene.
"It shouldn’t be toxic, and even if it is, how long can you hold your breath for?" Seeing the red fog drift in front of him, Chang sniffed it. He noticed a strong scent of fishy sweetness.
"Oh, it smells awful!" The classroom was now filled with complaints. After their initial shock, they all began discussing the strange phenomenon.
"What is this??"
"Bloody fog, I bet there must be a lot of car accidents out there."
"The fog is so thick; I can’t see what is happening out there!"
"Hey! Call your family!" Chang took the phone out of his pocket and dialed his mother’s phone number.
The response was a busy signal ———
"The phone call can’t be connected!" Chang stared at the strange fog and felt panic from his gut. "Is the fog blocking the signal?"
"I need to check out what is going on!" A daring student stood up and walked to the door.
This attracted the attention of all the students. After he went out the door of the classroom, everyone flocked to the window to look at him.
Visibility was less than five meters outside the window, and when the daring student took two steps outside, his figure had already become obscure.
"Hey, don’t go too far! We can’t see you if you go further," a friend of his faced the window and shouted.
"Oh! Okay, it’s really red out here, and I can’t see anything. I can’t even identify which room is the teacher’s office," the daring student shouted back. His voice came through the fog, forming small ripples.
Then ...
As the daring student’s response came from the other side of the hallway, further ripples tore apart the fog as a group of sparrows rushed towards the source of the sound.
Sounds of flapping wings—
A group of sparrows fearlessly crashed onto the daring student’s cheek!
"Crack—"
When the first sparrow impacted the daring student, it made a strange noise as if a tomato was being smashed. A few more similar sounds were heard after that.
Chang turned his head and saw the daring student utter a shrill scream as his face was immediately pierced by the sparrows. More sparrows noticed the prey, and in less than a second, his whole face was ruined like a rotten watermelon.
"Help----"
The daring student screamed desperately. He was pushed to the ground by the monster sparrows. However, his screams were very short, as if he was choking on his own flesh and blood. He kneeled and finally fell on the ground, muttering meaningless sounds. The normally timid sparrows began to peck the blood-soaked flesh as they heard the sounds.
The horrifying feeling paralyzed all the students in the classroom. No one was able to even move an inch. They had never seen this scenario before, not even in a horror movie.
A moment ago, that student was still jumping around, but now he was crawling on the ground. The timid sparrows had become completely bloodthirsty. At this moment, no one dared to go out and stop these monsters; rather, fear flooded the crowd. No one wanted to move—not until those sparrows finished their "meal" and the daring student stopped twitching.
"Can someone please tell me what…has happened to this world?" The ashen-faced glasses-man muttered.


Five hundred million years ago, an epoch of extraordinarily fast evolution and mutation took place. It is said that all ancestors of today’s species on Earth derive from those that appeared in the “Cambrian Period”. 

Unfortunately, nothing gold can stay. After the brief “Cambrian Period”, life on Earth entered a period of stagnation. Humans came out on top, becoming the most powerful species on Earth.

A second age has come.

During the first “Cambrian Period” humanity was kicked off of the throne of the food chain quickly. Now, during the second “Cambrian Period”, what will happen to humanity?

The real end of the world is not the tale of brainless zombies. 

It is paradise.

Hao Ren heard the call of the MDT and ran towards it. The MDT projected a set of holographic projections in the air, which showed scanned images of Hesperides' wound. They could see a very clear silvery-white, triangular object in the depths of the horrifying, piercing wound. Hao Ren was stunned for a moment before realising what it was. "...The heck, the arrow from thousands of years ago is still stuck inside?"
"It's impossible to heal the wound directly with the dormant chamber. We must perform a small operation," The MDT opened the dormant chamber to wake Hesperides up as he spoke to Hao Ren. "The self-regulating machine can handle a simple task like this, I just don't know if Hesperides is aware that there's something stuck inside her head."
At this point, the alloy hatch of the dormant chamber was completely opened. Hesperides took a deep breath and slowly awoke. She sat up and rubbed her forehead, feeling a little muddled. She then asked, "Done? Is there any way to heal the wound?"
"Do you know there's something stuck in your head?" Hao Ren looked at the goddess, who came from almost the same era as Vivian in a bizarre manner. He found that the things he faced were getting more and more extreme by the day. "We found an arrowhead... I wonder how you survived!"
Hesperides was not surprised. She already knew about it a long time ago. "Oh, you mean this, I thought you were going to tell me something serious... I've known about it. It's the one-eyed man's arrow. With the power of exorcism, this thing's been coated with my tissue and it's become part of the wound. It can't be taken out. If it wasn't stuck in the wound, the wound would have healed."
Stunned, Hao Ren asked, "You have a grudge against Darwin, eh?"
"No, I had a good relationship with Darwin. He's an interesting human being. The year he died, we still contacted each other through letters." Hesperides looked at Hao Ren with a strange expression and asked, "And what does the vitality of the otherworldlings have to do with the theory of evolution?"
"…"
Hao Ren realised that it was not wise to make such jokes in front of an unusual creature. He had learned his lesson from Vivian.
"Ehem, it's like this, I'm going to take that arrowhead out." Hao Ren coughed and waved to the self-regulating machine to come over. It was bored and had begun to its tentacles into a bow. "You see, I have professional equipment here…"
Hesperides was shocked when she saw the self-regulating machine, and asked, "What is this?!"
Hao Ren kept a straight face and said, "My assistant."
Hesperides turned her head and looked around the basement, then she looked back at Hao Ren with a "you're teasing me" look as she asked, "You made it in this place? In the Mythological Age, it took at least one factory to make such a fine magical puppet, and Hephaestus' studio was at least 20 times bigger than yours—plus, I reckon he couldn't make such a complicated thing either. Are you an elder as well?"
Hao Ren spread his hands and said, "Since there were also magical puppets in the Mythological Age, it's easier for you to grasp the concept. Anyway, you can try understanding it in your way. There are a lot of things that's hard for me to explain to you. And one more thing, do you want an operation?"
Hesperides touched her wound and looked at the robotic squid with a weird expression. Although the squid's tentacles looked very flexible, the equipment at the tip of tentacles looked very fine, and the various devices in the basement looked amazing... it did not stop her from feeling unconvinced! She looked at Hao Ren and said solemnly, "If you think you can heal my wound simply by pulling the arrowhead out, you're wrong. If it was that easy, I can even grab a human doctor to do the surgery; my own vitality will guarantee a 100% success rate for any operation. But this arrowhead is special, and taking it out will only cause more trouble."
After Hesperides explained the special condition of her wound, Hao Ren finally understood some of the more formidable abilities of the senior demon hunter: The arrowhead had an "Endless Pursuit" attribute. It was going to be very hard to take it out.
The arrowhead had merged into the tissues around the wound. Not to mention, the mystical powers of exorcism on the arrowhead had also infected and altered the physical form of her tissue through a gradual transition of alienation. The arrowhead was now almost part of Hesperides' body so, first and foremost, cutting it down would be a problem. Second, even if you removed the arrowhead, it would try to return to its original position—and they could not find a solution for that.
"When you take it out, it will fly back in again," Hesperides pointed to her forehead and told him the horrifying story indifferently, "and it can possibly be stuck a little bit deeper at a different angle when it flies back in—it could kill me. Many years ago I tried to pull it out by myself, and I almost lost my life."
"Such a crazy ability…" Hao Ren's mouth was agape and he was tongue-tied. "They're born to kill people, right?"
"Unless you can remove the mark on my body, don't touch the arrowhead. Taking it out will only bring me more damage." Hesperides sighed. "In fact, I didn't hold much hope in the first place. It's just that you were so highly praised by Vivian, and I thought you knew some secret skills that only wizards would know... Look like it's just surgery. Then, I'll tell you frankly that surgery doesn't work."
At this juncture, the MDT suddenly said, "It's not really difficult to remove an exorcism mark."
Hao Ren and Hesperides immediately stared at the MDT. The Mobile Data Terminal deliberately paused for a little while and then, it slowly explained, "The power of God can dispel any magical effect that is inferior to it. Just find a thing with the mark of a true god and let Hesperides hold it. The mark of the demon hunter on her will then fade away. Of course, this dispelling effect works all round. Hesperides' magical abilities will also be temporarily sealed for a while, but this is a small problem."
Hao Ren stomped impatiently and yelled, "You don't say! Where am I going to find an artifact? Don't tell me you want Raven 12345 to come and help us?"
The MDT hit Hao Ren twice and said, "Stupid, go and take your labour contract."
"Huh?"
"Madam Raven's signature is on it!"
Hao Ren looked dazed when he took out a few pieces of poor quality paper from his Dimensional Pocket. This was the labour contract he had signed with the Space Administration, and he kept it well. He unfolded the paper, looked at the crooked handwriting of the "real god" amusingly and said, "Stop joking. This thing…"
"What's wrong with it? There's a god's name on it! And it's written by the goddess herself—do you think lowly of her blessings?" The MDT was feeling much disdain at Hao Ren's rigid thinking. "Who told you the artifact had to be cool and polished? How about those gods who have problems in their aesthetic view, those who have bad handwriting, and live a sloppy life? Do they have to learn fine arts for three years, carving for four years, iron forging for five years and practice signing for two months before they become gods?"
Hao Ren was confused by the MDT's bombardment of words. In the end, he had no choice but to hand over the contract to Hesperides. He said, "Umm… How about you try holding it?"
Hesperides looked at Hao Ren sceptically as she took the low quality pieces of papers from him and said, "You want me to hold these papers and believe that they can erase the demon hunter's mark that's been entrenched in me for thousands of years? Then you'll just cut my skull open and take out the arrowhead?"
Hao Ren sighed and said, "Forget it, I don't believe it too. A long time ago, there used to be an unrestrained surgeon like this and he ended up killed by Cao Cao¹."
"Of course… Wait, I believe it!" Hesperides was about to pass the papers back to Hao Ren when she suddenly had a look of surprise on her face. She took off her lace headband and the silver glow was fading. The wound that had never healed for thousands of years was fading! "I don't care what it is… it works! I can feel the power of the demon hunter subsiding!"
"It really works?!" Hao Ren and Lily looked at each other as they said in unison.
"Of course. When have I ever lied to you?" The MDT hit Hao Ren on the head and said, "Remember, a god's name is a god's name. It doesn't matter how weird he or she is, the power of God itself will not change! What are you waiting for? Go and perform the surgery!"
At this point, Raven 12345's signature had begun to release a light blue glow. Even as an outsider who did not know magic and divine power, Hao Ren could feel the atmosphere in the air changing rapidly. Some kind of heart-throbbing divine pressure, together with the aura of Raven 12345 were gradually filling the basement. Although it was a pity that this powerful aura was coming from a few pieces of A4 printing paper rather than some sort of scripture, no doubt that the goddess' name had come into effect!
Hao Ren and Lily quickly helped Hesperides, who became powerless due to the effect. They got her into the dormant chamber and left the rest to the robotic squid. Both of them observed the operation from afar.
After the robotic squid and dormant chamber were connected, Hesperides' physiological structure and endurance were confirmed, and the surgical plan was quickly developed. The robotic squid said something and two of its tentacles flashed. Then, poof! It entered the dormant chamber.
The basement was immediately filled with splashing gold sparks and noises of the electric saw as well as electric drill. The place sounded like a furniture factory rushing to get work done.
Hao Ren and Lily were speechless.
"The f*ck, this doesn't sound right!" Hao Ren's face turned pale. It did not sound like an operation, but more like opening a hole in a steel plate. Nonetheless, the MDT still comforted him and said, "Don't worry, the thunder giant's body structure is not the same as that of a human being's—you can't open her titanium alloy skull without using the air hammer and electric drill…"
Lily tucked her tail and hid behind Hao Ren as she asked, "Landlord, why do I find it quite scary?"
Hao Ren drew his neck back and said, "Shhh, it's for the sake of Science..."


As a person who is down-to-earth as well as a good Samaritan, Hao Ren desires to live the rest of his life as a benevolent landlord. Stumbling into a curious yet mysterious lady, he began his journey of “collecting” abnormal and supernatural tenants. 
His life only became more chaotic when he receives a labor contract from “God”. Discover the many races, myths and worlds that lie beyond what humans define as normal! This bizzare fantasy full of fun is sure to bring you on a crazy rollercoaster of emotions!

I gathered all the biomass from the transport units. Thanks to the lake exploration, we had now over 140 biomass, and I need 80 to break through the next level. After that, the next level will be again a minor evolution. Thankfully, I had a core I could use too. 

"Darwin, did you manage to find a way to activate the broken core?"

"Not yet, it is a highly unstable object that could be destroyed easily. Any attempt to tamper with it is risky." 

"Risky? Norn, on a scale from 0 to 10, how worried should I be that it can blow my face?"

"Probably a 6 or 7 of blowing the whole cave if you ask me to rush, Kai."

"That's bad. Keep working on it then."

I looked at my units and felt that we might be ready to survive an attack of that octopus creature. Killing it was another thing, and an invasion of spiders or a breach of flower-snakes could take us down. 

I needed to get stronger quickly. And I need to help. Despite my reluctance, Darwin and Norn have proved themselves as powerful allies for now. I can't fully trust them, but we're on the same boat, and body. 

That's why I chose to upgrade the support biomorph to level 3. 

I had a hard time deciding the order of upgrades, as I usually choose what I felt could solve some immediate shortcomings.

"Do it, Norn, before I regret it. Darwin, keep the units in check while I'm KO. And have some eyes on our flashy neighbors."

It then began. Pain ran up and down my body, and I fell to the ground, convulsing. I felt how the least amount of energy from the first core was being used to enhance my evolution again. 

The changes in my DNA and genomes enhance my strength, speed, and biomorphs. At the same time, those biomorphs allowed me to have more options and grow more dangerous. 

But the process was hell itself. The DNA helix was broken and reforged into a triple helix. The number of biological changes the universe would take a million years to achieve by itself was taking place in mere hours. 

There was a price to pay nonetheless, and that is a considerable risk to damage myself forever. Thankfully, that was kept in check thanks to Norn and had only a terrible and grotesque amount of pain as an aftereffect. 

My body kept growing, changing the biomass stored in super packed energy cells into huge chains of lipids, proteins, hormones, and many other chemicals that produced what seemed to be magic in ordinary eyes. Or nightmare, that depended on how you looked at it. 

In less than three hours later, my body had been broken apart several times, and each time it grew new chitin plaques to cover the newly formed muscle tissue. 

"AHH! Finally." I stood up and shook my neck, making a disgusting sound when the chitin cracked. "Darwin, show me the stats."

"I feel so alive right now!"

But I was also weakened. That must be a side effect of depleting the small core after the evolution. It sure has been kicking a fast conversion up to now, but I also have kind of overclocked Norn. 

I woke up from the slumber, and I checked my new body. 

It was bigger. I had at least 25% more volume than before that I wanted to fill as soon as possible with food. I was starving!

The transporters came to present me biomass reserves that they had been storing until I woke up, and I devour it immediately. 

"Ahh, so good. I think I get your point, Norn. Hunger can be horrible."
I still felt empty despite eating nearly 40 units of biomass in a few bites. 

"Host, Queen Norn will need to rest for a few days."

"Really? Will she be able to stay so much time without messing with me?" I giggled about it but silently thanked her efforts. 

"Queen Norn is exhausted. The constant forceful evolutions and DNA damage control she has been monitoring have taken its toll." 

"So we must wait for her, right? Keep the evolutions without her is dangerous. We need a certain margin of security." 

"The only good point was that she would focus her depleted resources on investigating the newly acquired DNA from the lake creatures, the plant-snake, and the octopus samples." 

"That means we will surely discover some new biomorphs useful to our fights. Good. Darwin, do you have any idea about the possible gains?" 

"I can do some rough guesses, but you could expect some structural unit, a support/defense biomorph, and finally an offensive one. But it might take days or weeks to unlock." 

It does not give much light into the issue, but I can't ask for more until Norn herself picks up the project and prioritizes the development. 

She seemed partially asleep. I didn't fully understand the extent of her role in my evolution, but I would stick to my purpose. Survive. 

That's all I want, all I need to know.  

I summoned a couple more transporters and put them to filter water and devour every piece of nutrient from the wet soil of the walls they could get. They were producing fewer and fewer returns lately, as the area was being depleted of usable biomass. 
 
"We have to think of a new way to get more biomass. Without getting ourselves killed." 

My senses then picked something. The scout unit swam back, and it moves left and right, jumping out of the water as soon as it reached us. 
It showed me several images of tentacles and a skull face approaching the cave.

"Talking about biomass, it seems we have some coming right to our doors."

I frowned, though. This was bad. I was quite weakened after the evolution took place. I still need more food and a few hours to recover completely. "Did that creature picked up the energy leaking from me?"

The foe was nearing the entrance of the cave, using its tentacles to investigate it, searching for traps and more blood worms. It looked that this creature had a bad experience with them and was now weary. 

"Host. The bomb units on the ceiling are reporting vibrations."

"What?!" I moved to the wall, and I too sensed something, it was faint, but it was there nonetheless. 

"They had to come in batches. How is this possible?!" 

"Your evolution has released a huge amount of energy. It seems that most of the beasts have picked up the signal. They are approaching from several directions." 

"Fuck, seriously, can't we have the party without a bloodbath?"

"That would be no party! Aghh! Can't take a nap or what, Kai?!" 

"Hey, Norn, you're still awake! It's good to have you back with us. By the way, Darwin, can you understand the clippity clop thing of the mantis? From the looks of it, they seem to have some language based on that sounds."

"I have already been working on that since you heard them at the underwater tunnels a few days ago."
 
Norn showed me what looked like a complex communication system.

"Host, I'm working on a way to produce some clicks so you can communicate with them." 

"Great! I'm going back to sleep now. Kai, do me a favor and don't die. Or I'll fucking kill you! Understood?!"

"I love your jokes Norn, now leave me to do my thing!"

Norn's consciousness fell back into slumber, and I shook my head. 

I turned towards the Mantis Queen and played with my mouth, trying to mimic the same clicks it did before, with varying amounts of success. 

* Cliick, sClahk, Plckikck, CLACK! 

"That last one was good enough! Okey, Darwin, help me translate the following."

We started to create a sort of clicks and clacks, imitating their language, and the mantis soon reacted.

"Prepare -- - for - -the fight! We have -- -enemies -- -incoming!!"

I saw that the queen gets surprised by my ability to mimic their language and urges its brood to take cover and prepares a defense near the shore. They may surprise us in combat or crumble. We'll see that soon. 

I jumped to the waters and began to throw bombs towards the entrance to block our enemies path. "That will earn us a few minutes!"

The octopus roared and started to assault the rock barrier I created with rage, as it noticed we did not have more red worms. I could not release them on the base just like that. We would die first if I did so. 

My units started to move to take positions and got ready for whatever was going to happen.

"Now we have to get ready for the fight!"

Monika still had a dull look on her face as I loudly and shamelessly bellowed out the lyrics as we walked down the road.

"This is my favorite song…" I cheerfully informed her, "Okay, how about a love song I can sing along to so serenade you next?"

Monika just sighed. /"It really is very appropriate to our situation, isn't it? It explains a lot about you. You are actually *enjoying* this, aren't you?"/

"In a different world with mah waifu, what's not to like?"

She blushed and mimed punching at the screen. /"Oh stop."/

And then with more gravitas /"I just don't want to see you hurt. I can't touch you… I can't help you when you're hurting. Being able to interact with you is such a blessing, but now it hurts me more to know just how much more is forbidden to me."/

"We'll figure something out. Let's just deal with things as they come."

Monika was silent for a long while. She nibbled on her thumbnail, uncertain if she had the right to speak. I was having none of that. "Just go ahead. Say what you want."

/"I'm sorry. It's just… what sort of life did you have that you'd enjoy being sent to another world? You're not bothered at all by the knowledge that you DIED.

/"You have terabytes of data in here. You have a folder named [Everything You Ever Need to Restart Civilization from Scratch]. Were you hoping for something like this to happen?"/

In fact, given Monika's psychotic trauma about suicide, it seemed to be really bothering her- the notion that I might have deliberately set out to kill myself.

Mmm. My life was not really something I would miss, but it was not all that uncomfortable either. I wondered if some god was watching how much I was tempting fate and decided to do something about it. 

"Ah. Actually, it's not as bad as it looks. You know how many people have a Zombie Plan? With the reasoning that a) it's fun to pretend and b) if you're ready for zombies you're prepared to face almost any other disaster out there?

"Sure, I had an isekai plan that mandated I should keep everything I would ever need in another world on my person all the time, but as a lot of these are utility gadgets anyway there's nothing to fear about being lost or stranded somewhere."

/"Unless you get robbed."/

"Well yes."

/"Silly!"/ she chuckled. /"But I guess that's what I like about you. Those who remain a child at heart can find new wonders in unexpected places."/

"I'm a chuuniboy and proud of it."

/"Ahahaha… I can *try* to respect that, at least."/

"Although it occurs to me that my isekai plan is really only most useful for portal-style or kidnapping-style isekai. Dying and being reborn somewhere else with copies of everything I had on me? There's no excuse for that. It's all so arbitrary it might as well be laziness."

/"I have a theory about that. What if you… we… are not reborn or remade in a new world, but are timeclones? It would take much less effort to restore a savestate."/

Monika scrunched her nose and put her hands on her hips. /"It makes me uncomfortable to think that we are just one layer deeper in a simulation. I don't want you to experience living in an empty world where nothing else is real, filled with caricatures of people with no one has any real awareness of themselves."/

"Mmm. That's more of a Let's Play than an isekai story. I mean, we're not exactly running on a game engine here, are we? There are a lot of trash isekai stories that have game mechanics properties to their world, but by authorial fiat and the sheer lack of effort involved in not having to depict anything graphically it can be assumed everything's just self-sustaining between the lines.

"At worst we might be living in a parody. Look up Hero Yoshihiko and the Demon King's Castle, I'm sure I have the TV series saved in there somewhere. It's basically Japan's Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail."

/"Okay, folder found. I'll be sure to watch it when we have the time."/ Monika then stared intently at me. /"Are you *sure* it really doesn't bother you?"/

"We might as well embrace the madness and have fun with it. I mean, it's like the GM is more willing to fudge your rolls if your character's being entertaining, right?"

/"A more competent writer should not hesitate to make his or her characters suffer. Catharsis is a powerful force."/

"True, but then if our writer was any competent we wouldn't be living in a shitty isekai light novel scenario and instead a properly realized fantasy world."

Monika laughed. /"Somehow that does help."/

Then she stopped and turned around to stare off at the distance. She marked a shape with a slowly spinning red circle. Oh, targeting highlights. Interesting. We might lose our peripheral vision and have horrible forward field of view, but we make up for in insane long-distance vision.

/"There's a carriage on the road,/" Monika reported. She zoomed in on a picture in picture window. /"It's pulled by two horses."/

"Evidence for standard fantasy template, check."

/"We could still be in some post-Medieval alternate timeline. Cars only really started to replace carriages after the 1900s, until then most travel still involved horses and carriages,"/ Monika sighed and touched a finger to her forehead. /"But then that would be the sort of story that comes in trilogies."/

"Yeah, Me in Another World with Mah Waifu isn't really all that marketable. Not to mention the whole copyright infringement thing with you."

/"Ahahahaha…"/

We walked placidly along the dirt road. I stopped to stare at the carriage as it passed, since as a city boy it was the first time for me to see the pre-Industrial equivalent of a mass produced travel platform. They used to call carriages wheelhouses, but it took until the 17th and 18th century to make carriages rides become more comfortable with suspension springs and better roads.

I looked down at the road, and it did seem to be more or less stone-free. It was a well-used road for carriages.

This particular carriage was tall and had a gilded frame, and little lamplights on the corners beside the driver. But even though it was accented with gold the paneling was actually shades of weird soothing green. Better than boring black as I was expecting.

It really did fit the whole 'wheelhouse' moniker, with its straight sides and a triangular roof. It gave off an impression of luxury and being pulled by only two horses meant it was someone's personal coach.

As the carriage passed us by, Monika noted /"I'm not sure, but looks like it *might* have a pivoting front axle. That was patented in 1818 as Ackerman Steering, but Erasmus Darwin might have a prior claim dating back to 1758. It's a fairly simple change from a straight to a Y-shaped bottom frame for a smoother ride and to reduce overturning."/

The level of technology in this other world could at least be assumed to be post-Medieval. Past 1600s, since it had plate glass. Tall carriages were that way because they could have suspension. However, since the front wheels were not completely separate from the rear wheels it would perhaps have more in common with, say, George Washington's coach than Abraham Lincoln's. And then we started to see more convenient low-slung passenger carriages towards the Victorian era.

All in all, even though it was of limited sample size, this one carriage implied that owning one was still a function of the privileged class instead of starting to become necessary for passenger mass movement within and between cities.

"Wait, *That* Darwin?"

/"That's Charles Darwin, dear. Erasmus is his father though."/

"This whole offloading our long-term memories to the Cloud is horrible for human evolution. Except that I'm sure there were some ancient Greeks complaining about the invention of writing."

/"That was actually Socrates."/ Monika then glanced to the bottom right of the screen and the connectivity icon. /"Um, about that…"/

"YOU THERE! THE ONE WITH THE THING ON YOUR FACE!" someone shouted from inside the carriage.

Well shite.

I tensed up. Monika and I shared a worried look. How this first encounter turned out would set the tone for this whole genre. There were a lot of isekai that were basically torture-fests with easily provoked nobles.

'Level S…' Lin Chao's mouth twitched once again but he gritted his teeth and went for it!
The pain index of Level A was about sixty while the pain index for giving birth was nine point two to nine point four. The pain that Lin Chao had endured just now was basically six times more than giving birth!
What would the pain index of Level S be?
"Begin!"
Upon agreement, Lin Chao immediately felt every nerve of his, every piece of flesh down to the smallest cell in his entire body implanted with violent pain. If the pain index of twenty broken bones was nine, Lin Chao's current pain index was ninety and above because the two hundred over pieces of bones inside of him were all broken, a comminuted fracture at that too.
Other than the skeleton, his muscle tissues and nervous system were all rendered in hellish agony.
The excruciation was felt into the bones!
Lin Chao thought that he was going crazy. He wanted very much to pass out but that could possibly make him fail the test. He wanted to hypnotize himself so that time would pass in a blink of an eye but the pain emptied his mind, he could not even concentrate.
Not knowing how long had passed, a strand of awareness gradually came back to Lin Chao as he heard a message, "Pain index 126, Level S test passed, the test continued…"
Passing the Level S pain index test was only one of the determination criteria; it included itch, taste, hearing, and desire.
Itch and pain did not belong to the same nerve impulse transmission, thus tested individually.
Lin Chao felt like he had died once upon the experience of the Level S pain index. He had thought that it was the hardest to endure, but when he experienced the Level S itch test, he found out what actual hell was!
He was incredibly itchy everywhere, his hair, his face, his limbs, every part of him felt unbearably itchy, so itchy that even his blood itched too, but he could not scratch himself.
Bang! Bang!
Lin Chao banged his head against the bed in a frenzy and writhed frantically, hoping to be able to stop the itch with friction, but the more he did, the itchier it felt. He even thought that going through the Level S pain index test again would be a blessing!
Lin Chao did not know how he passed the Level S itch test. His mind went blank after hearing the word 'Start', then the moment he could think straight again, he realized that he had actually passed.
He heaved a sigh of relief that revealed a lingering fear.
The taste and hearing tests that followed the itch test became easier. Although they were also Level S, Lin Chao only felt discomfort. Compared to the hysterical itch, they were almost effortless.
Last but not least, came the aspect of desire.
The test of desire was self-control. It was no longer pain but all sorts of indulgence. The enjoyment was not superficial in simply simulating beautiful women and gourmet delicacies but it went straight to the nerves that were responsible for pleasure; the test would make its target feel on cloud nine, over a hundred times more pleasurable than having an orgasm!
The incredible pleasure was addictive, especially when one had endured the pain and itch tests prior. Participants would lose the ability to refuse such delight.
Lin Chao wished that time could eternally stop at this moment!
In spite of it, the test this time was not how long one could persevere but was considered to be completed only when one regained themselves within sixty seconds. Lin Chao pinched his legs in a manic but his sensory receptors seemed to have turned numb as he had only felt a slight pinch after he almost squeezed blood out of his limb.
The hint of pain triggered Lin Chao's bare control. He stood up with a shout and all the pleasures disappeared at once, although it left an engrossing impression that he never had the desire to try it again.
"Pain, itch, taste, hearing, desire…"
"Composite analyzing…"
The artificial intelligence voice was emotionless but Lin Chao was nervous listening to it.
After a few minutes…
"Final rating, Level S!"
Lin Chao almost jumped from ecstasy. The series of evaluations just now had almost broken him down; alas, the heavens were nice to him and he had gotten the highest level of rating, Level S!
"Participant's final rating: Level SSA!"
"The participant may enter the ruins record ranking, please name yourself!"
Listening to the three-eyed lady's cold tone, Lin Chao was joyful. The rating of Level 2S was the highest rating that only Zeus in his past life could achieve!
"Lin Chao." he stated his name.
"Entering…"
"Participant Lin Chao receives rating Level SSA, temporarily ranking first in the record system!"
As the three-eyed woman's voice spoke, a string of data appeared on the square screen on the dark golden ball and rapidly formed a message. "First of the trial – Lin Chao!"
"Rating: Level SSA!"
Lin Chao knew that the record ranking would remain for the viewing of anyone who entered this ruins in the future.
"Now, rating rewards!"
The three-eyed lady spoke flatly, "Rating 2S, rewarded an Evolution Tree. You may also choose any three items. The highest class of your chosen item is Class S!"
'An Evolution Tree?' Lin Chao was surprised. 'What is it? Why have I never heard of it? Is this what Zeus got? If that's the case, then the Evolution Tree is magic. It can make someone ranked ninety-something rocket to the seventh place on the global ranking in just a few months! Based on the current timing, this must be the first ruins treasure to greet the world!'
Then, a projection was portrayed from the three-eyed lady's golden vertical pupil eye. It was a virtual list that hovered in front of Lin Chao. There were plenty of item pictures and their selection criteria on it.
"Please pick three items."
The pictures of the ruins items were ultramodern firearms, cold weapons made of rare titanium alloy, incredibly precious potions, and some strange items belonging to that civilization.
The Gendaya Civilization was the first civilization of the Sun Era. It was also called the superpower civilization. Its people were Self Evolved; the source of the male's special ability was the third eye on their foreheads while the source of the women's power came from their uterus.
A myth of this civilization, the women's uterus was said to be able to communicate with the universe!
In addition, this civilization's people had no heart. Their vital points were their head and their third eye. In the first Sun Era, their technology was so advanced that it was tens of thousands of years more leading than modern technology. The ruins items obtained from all Gendaya Ruins were related to evolution! – Like evolution potion or evolution armor.
"Let's look at the S Tier first." Lin Chao scrolled the virtual list and went to the S Tier item list.
"Nuclear bomb… S Tier Evolution Potion… S Tier Genetic Dragon Armor…"
The S Tier list had only tens of items but each one of them was a one of a kind treasure; Lin Chao was immensely excited as he had never even touched them before!
The S Tier Evolution Potion could make a Level A Evolved gain a thirty percent chance to become a Level S Evolved and that sufficed to make the potion something to fight for among countless opponents.
The nuclear bomb was a nuclear-powered compressed explosive that could flatten a base city in a blink of eyes!
As for the S Tier Genetic Dragon Armor, it was insane. It could be fused with one's genetics and activated during a battle to actually manifest on the body; its defensive capabilities were heaven-defying that modern firearms could not deal any damage to it. It could only be married by equal tiered ruins items!
"Ah, the topnotch S Tier items indeed. Anyone of them is a treasure worthy of one whole base city!" Lin Chao held himself back from choosing despite the thrill and continued browsing the A Tier item list.
About a quarter of an hour later, he had gone through most of the items and picked three ultimately. There was only one that was from the S Tier, the other two items he had chosen were from the A Tier and B Tier respectively.
The S Tier item was a Foldable Alternate Dimension Space!
This was an invisible space that was hidden in an alternate dimension that was one hundred square kilometers in surface area and could store anything including living creatures!
It was the only item that Lin Chao could use out of all the S Tier items. The rest of the things, like the nuclear bomb, would have killed him as well when it erupted while destroying a base city as he would not be able to run out of its explosion range just yet!
The S Tier Evolution Potion would be useless now as Lin Chao would have to reach Level A Evolved to be able to consume it. The currently invincible S Tier Genetic Dragon Armor was equally impractical because his genetic strength now could not even support the fusion.
A good tool must be well utilized. Although it was a waste to pick A Tier and B Tier items when he had the selection right of the S Tier, the two items he had picked were significantly helpful to him right now.
The A Tier item was a pair of Genetic-Modified Dragon Wings! It was similar to the Genetic Dragon Armor, both genetic items that could be fused to the body, but the difference was that it was genetically modified and had an independent energy core. Lin Chao now need not deplete his genetic energy to support its activation, which meant that this pair of wings could fully unleash the force of an A Tier item out of the box!
During the early stage of the apocalypse, whoever used an A Tier ruins item would understand the extent of its destruction power!
As for the B Tier item, it was a Black Hole Bomb.
Its force was not as destructive as the nuclear bomb but there was no nuclear radiation that resided upon eruption. This was a physical compressed explosive that would disintegrate and swallow everything within the explosion range!
Lin Chao had only one purpose for choosing this bomb. – The zoo!


This is a world where the living have become the undead, a world where faith remains unwavering but yet crumbles, a world where everything is available but yet, nothing remains. 
We yearn for salvation and hope for a downfall with cold cruelty as we act out with our insanity and zealous nature. We may be as strong as the gods, but we're also as ignoble as ants...
Stop and you'll be in hell, but going forward is just the same, only at a different place.

Tristan looked at the lines of floating text in shock. He hesitated for a long time before thinking in his mind. 

"Absorb."

Soon the silky bead slowly disappeared and Tristan could feel a gentle and cold energy wash his insides as well clean his body and rejuvenate his cells.

Then he saw within his vision a few lines of text.

[Gratitude of a Remnant Spirit has been absorbed.]
[Progress +10%]

Tristan thought for a bit. "Do I have some kind of digital system?" He contemplated for a while, before calling out a single word within his mind. "Status."

[Race: Human]
[Evolution Level - None]
[Progress - 10%]

"Evolution level...it seems like the silky bead progressed my path to evolving. Evolution... does this system help in allowing me to evolve? What does it mean to evolve?" Tristan was shocked by the turn of events.

Tristan walked back out to see Cory still heavily injured and unconscious. He wasn't sure what he should do, when he remembered the business card the government official had given him earlier.

He called the contact number.

"...Tristan? Did something happen?" A voice spoke on the other line.

"I am at the temple ruin in ... area. There is a person here who was attacked by a paranormal event, I thought you could help." Tristan said calmly.

The government worker took in a breath. "I'm coming with a team, don't do anything stupid in the mean time."

Half an hour later, a group of three individuals including the government official climbed up the stairs of the temple and saw Tristan camping there outside a tent, calmly. Lying beside him was an unconscious man who looked very ill and bleeding heavily.

One of the three immediately reached to the injured Cory and a pale white light was emitted from his hands, healing the injured. Tristan raised his eyes when he saw that.

The official looked at Tristan. "Can you explain what happened?" Tristan blinked.

"I have filed a report with the Vast Expanse already." Tristan said.

The government official raised his eyes in surprise. "You've already managed to find out about the Vast Expanse and join it? Aren't you quick? Were you here on a mission?"

Tristan nodded. "I was here to investigate the rumors of this temple being haunted. Came here to camp for a couple of days, seeing how good the view is. Then this guy suddenly arrived, claiming he came here to exorcise an evil spirit."

The official nodded. "He is indeed a low level spirit detector registered with us. Go on."

Tristan continued. "He attacked the spirit with some kind of paper talisman which created lightning, but it only angered the spirit which retaliated and he was injured. The spirit didn't have any hostile intentions towards me, details about the spirit and the process of its dissipation have already been submitted to the Vast Expanse."

The official nodded. "I will check the report from the guild later. But I must say, I didn't expect you to decide to dig deeper into the Hidden World. You are too weak and have no ability of your own, I can only warn you for your own good. If you still want to enter this world... you can join our Strategic Defense Division of the government which deals with the hidden world."

Tristan shook his head. "Right now it is too early for me to decide. Thank you for your invitation."

Tristan decided to go home the next morning. "Mom, Dad, I'm back." Tristan yelled.

"How was your camping trip Tristan?" Tristan's mom asked. Tristan replied. "I sent some pictures to the family group chat. It was a good place which was unexplored, very quiet." 

His mom looked at the pictures. "Wow, this is a really nice place. Such a beautiful view of Coastal City and the sea as well. This is good, you should go out more, explore." His mom said with a smile.

Back in his room, Tristan visited the Vast Expanse website and had received a mail in his account.

"Congratulations ID: White Star, on successfully completing your first mission.
Reward : 10 credits + Bonus 50 credits for information on Remnant Spirit + Bonus 50 credits for solving the haunting."

Tristan was surprised at the results. He got 110 credits for completing a level 1 mission, which was out of the ordinary.

Credits were an internal currency within the vast expanse that could be used to purchase items, information and techniques and so on. Using credits, even a level 1 authority member could pay to access higher level information which would otherwise be locked to them.

Tristan searched about human evolution and found several bits of information which were locked. Without hesitating, he spent 50 credits to unlock the most basic verified information of level 4.

[Over the years, humans have developed many methods to grow stronger. Martial Arts, Cultivation, Magic, Shamanism, Faith and myriad other methods. However, these are all borrowed methods from different species within the foreign worlds.

The human species has shown a trait of excellent adaptability. We can adapt the techniques of the other beings to make ourselves stronger and this is indeed our conventional way to get stronger and compete with these species and threats.

However, these are all foreign techniques. What about humanity's own innate means to grow stronger? Are humans powerless? This is not the case. Humans do have an innate means of becoming stronger, which is to evolve.

To evolve means to enter a sublimation process where the human genes transform to create a new subspecies of the human race. This process is basically equivalent to developing an innate talent. Human's with innate talents are not uncommon, and according to this theory, they are all humans who have sublimated to a new evolution or descendants of sublimated individuals.

Information from [Redacted] tells us that Innate Talent used to be the dominant power system in [Redacted]. However, the overall strength of these innate talents is quite weak compared to the techniques of our times and also very random.

Evolution is a very risky process and the outcome is not determinable beforehand, which means evolving is a gamble with fate.

Evolution can occur multiple times. The openly revealed record is 3 times. It is unknown if this is the limit, however, most people never evolve. Approximately 5% of the humans have the possibility of evolving of which less than 10% have been known to evolve a second time.

Several methods have been proposed to direct the direction and facilitate the evolution, and results show that cultivation of traditional techniques seems to play a role in directing the direction of evolution.]

When Tristan read this information, he had a dignified look on his face. Evolution is indeed a way to become stronger, but it appears to be exceedingly difficult, yet it seemed like his system might have made it easier. 

"Absorbing treasures like that silky bead might lead to evolution progress. I wonder if the kind of evolution depends on the kind of treasure I absorbed." Tristan wondered to himself.

Tristan Flores was an ordinary young man as long as he was allowed to be ordinary. When his place of work ended up in an accident, he discovered that Earth was nothing like what he thought. 

After discovering the hidden world, Tristan ends up with a system and the sequence of events lead him down a rabbit hole that shows few signs of allowing his life to be normal again.

A new path to evolution will lead the way to unravelling mysteries, sinister plots and machinations hidden within the counts of time.

Anna arrived at Intramed Wise's office panicking. She immediately reported to Darwin what happened at school. "Darwin! Darwin! Andy, she - she just willingly gave Ten Million Dollars to Elena Rogers!"
Darwin was already aware of Elena making trouble for Anna, and there was no need for further explaining. 
She went frantically telling how it went down expecting Darwin to knock some sense into Andrea, but instead, Darwin laughed. He just laughed at the entire situation. 
"What -  What is so funny?" Anna asked. 
Darwin shook his head before saying, "Anna, you'll know Andy soon enough. She does not make hasty decisions without a plan. I'm sure she'll end up making Elena pay her back double the amount, if not more."
"Really?" Anna asked before taking a seat in front of him. 
While still processing his words, she heard Darwin asked, "Do you want coffee?"
"Coffee?" Anna repeated. Her thoughts shifted from Andrea to what happened last night that she asked, "We are not even going to talk about last night?"
Anna saw the hesitation in Darwin, the same expression she saw this morning after waking up in his arms. It hurt her instantly that her hand clenched into a fist. 
"Never mind. I can see it was a mistake for you… I'm sorry I even asked," said Anna before turning away and closing his office door. 
Darwin was in deep thought for minutes, unable to think thoroughly. When reality hit him, he cleared his desk, throwing all his belongings to the floor. He was upset with himself. 
After letting out his frustration, he took a moment to look through the window let out a heavy sigh. 
"Last night," said Darwin. He messaged his head thinking of what to do. "Anna, last night was not a mistake, but you might hate me if you knew."
Last night, Darwin and Anna stayed up late, checking the van outside the house. When it finally drove away, only then did they indulged in a casual conversation. One thing led to another, and they found themselves kissing.
Not knowing where it may lead them, they made their way to the guest room and continued to kiss. They made out for an undetermined time, but Darwin held himself back. They did not get past kissing, but instead; they cuddled to sleep in the same bed. 
When Andrea had called Darwin in the morning, it would have not been made into an awkward situation if not for Anna asking how he felt about her. 
Darwin had long liked Anna. He started by appreciating her brilliance, then her kindness until such time that she had proven herself to the company. Unfortunately, he had already taken the offer of Landon Song before he realized he was already in love with Anna. 
It was because of this that he had held back from telling his true feelings for her. Knowing how Anna has refused Landon's help in the past, it worried him that Anna will hate him the same way. 
An hour passed, and Darwin had not made progress at work. He decided to speak to Landon about their previous arrangement. He took out his phone and the moment Landon picked up, he said, "We need to talk. I don't know if I can still back out of our agreement."
"Let us meet in a private function," said Landon before putting down the phone. 
While Darwin was having love troubles, Andrea was at home, trying to connect the dots. She temporarily put aside her cupid role for Anna and Darwin as she felt it was imperative to deal with Elena first.
Anna first had trouble with this woman after the transfer of laboratories from Michael Song's company to her name. It made her wonder what was such a big deal that she also called Landon that day. She learned that Paul Rogers had longed endorsed the care of the shares to his wife and that it used to be handled by Sherry Rogers, Paul Rogers' ex wife. 
Landon revealed to Andrea, "Mrs. Lu, from what I know Elena and Paul Rogers have a prenuptial agreement. You see, Mr. Rogers' parents did not approve of Elena. They only allowed the marriage, given that Elena receives nothing else other than the profits coming from my company. Can you tell me what is this all about? Why are you asking about Elena?"
"Oh… So that's what it's all about." Knowing how Landon cared about Anna, a smirk appeared on her face and told him about Elena's grudge on Anna. He promised to talk to Paul about Elena.
 Andrea continued to review all her findings of Elena and found something suspicious. Days before the kidnapping, she took out a substantial amount from the bank and another one a day after the incident. Her heart raced, and she suddenly had an inkling. 
"Oh, my God!" She could not help but exclaim. "No wonder she hated me. I must have practically ruined her plans!"
The kidnappers from the recent incident were all arrested and had been questioned. Thus, Andrea looked through the police records, but they gave no names. She then resorted to finding information about the kidnappers. 
Inside their study, Andrea printed the pictures of the criminals and their nearest kin, hoping that one of them looked familiar. 
When the children arrived home from school with Juan, they all entered the study to greet their mommy. 
"Hey! That's the same man who tried to give Justin a box of chocolate," Said Brie, she was pointing at the man who was a brother to one of the arrested kidnappers. 
"Yeah, it is him, mommy," said Chevre. "That man gave the same chocolate to the Rogers kid! But, don't worry, mommy, we told both of them not to trust strangers."
Andrea's brows drew together, and her lips formed into a circle. "When exactly did this happen?"
"This afternoon, mommy! You were not there to pick us up! Hmmmp!" Brie revealed. 
While Andrea was asking the twins, Juan also came inside, saying, "Mrs. Lu, the boss has been calling you  - oh, that's the man inside the van from last night, Mrs. Lu. Who is that?"
It was clear to Andrea that these men were after Justin and maybe still one of Paul Roger's son. 
After telling the kids to get dressed with Aunt Rosa, she quickly traced the van from the other night at Anna's home. She noticed it was parked in a private home outside the city. Andrea contemplated. She needed substantial evidence to connect Elena to these men. 
She took a deep breath and called for her husband, "Babe, I'm sorry for not answering your calls. I was busy... How about some action tonight?"
"Hmmm… I like that - "
"No! No… No… A real kind of action. You know… fighting… crime?" Andrea said with a pleasant voice. 
"No." Lu Fang said outright. "Let the police handle it."
"But  -  but… I only have a week to solve this problem and it is worth Ten Million Dollars… Please…"

"Andy, I love you so much." The man said while taking a breather after a long kiss.

Andrea closed her eyes and held his face giving him small kisses before answering. "I love you too." 

"Babe, I know I said I'd wait till we get married, but… - " 

"Shhh…" She interrupted him and teasingly bit her lip before smiling. She gave him another set of kisses before finally adding, "I never asked you to wait… I want you too…"

 "Andy, tell me about your family? What have you been up to before we met?" 

Andrea's head was leaning against his torso thinking of what to say to him. She was suddenly silent and began sorting through a pile of secrets in her head, trying to decide where to start. 

She then turned to the side and hugged him tightly. 

"Andy?" 

"Sometimes, I wonder if I am that really important to you."

BANG! BANG! 

Lu Fang closed his eyes anticipating pain to follow but as he opened his eyelids, he felt nothing.

“Andy! Andy!” 

He screamed at the top of his lungs when he realized it was Andrea and not him who received the bullets and fell off the cliff.

Inside a private facility, a woman woke up from a coma and the first thing she did was to call her sister. “I want you to arrange a marriage for me. Marry me off to the CEO of Lu-Wei Enterprises, Lu Fang.”

The US government took all the resources from the alien legacy as well as the Edict of Washington, giving Harriet and her team an exorbitant reward. This reward would be enough to give Harriet and her team a satisfying life for both them and their future descendants. However, this is where the story of Harriet Li's legendary excavation team ends - having accomplished their goal, they decided to spend the rest of their days relaxing while attempting to decipher their Edicts which they snatched. The US government which possessed the Edict of Washington, at this time, did not suspect that there were other tablets similar to this one. They were too busy analyzing the data given to them by the alien, which they learned was an intelligent life form that called himself "The Primogenitor." Sadly, no matter how hard they tried, R&D could not pinpoint the location of origin of this "Primogenitor." On the other hand, the Primogenitor had given the secrets behind environmentally friendly ways to harness the various natural resources of the Earth. Creating and making use of sustainable energy was no longer a mere science, it had developed and become something greater than that. The Primogenitor had discovered that due to the pollution, the air was no longer "pure." He had to give humans the technology to totally and perfectly purify the air, while also allowing them to make use of the impurities of the air as another energy source. 

At this point in time, this technology was not just a pipe dream anymore unlike if this tech had been given to them a few years ago. The US government quickly ordered prototype machinery of the new air purifiers to be developed and built. With the resources and reference materials given by the legacy left behind by the Primogenitor, the tech became a resounding success. The United Nations was soon informed about this tech and in an unprecedented move, world leaders decided to put their differences aside in order to save their own hides. It was foolish to start more wars over this when everyone could benefit. However, this was mostly due to the US agreeing to share the Primogenitor technology without asking for very much in return. Little would everyone know, however, that many years down the line, the fruits of this seemingly generous trade would bring incredible results for the United States, and perhaps endanger the lives of others...

In the interim, as the world was licking its wounds from its intense pollution, the Primogenitor technology also allowed the world to properly fight back against man-made phenomena such as climate change... These things all slowly began to become a distant myth over the years. But in the meantime, as the air began to become purer and purer, changes at the human level began to occur. The first recorded instance of "Human Evolution," where a single person had developed the strange ability to make whatever he wanted lose its internal heat, had been revealed to the world. Researchers wanted to study this man, who was named Harry Smythe. Harry, of course, refused to be dissected by some scientists, so he put forward the crazy theory that the technology the world was using in order to purify the air was allowing humans to unlock the hidden potentials in their bodies. This was a crazy theory, but it was still an idea nonetheless.

The scientific community at large mostly dismissed it as bollocks, yet there were still many teams attempting to study the new form of purified air in order to see if Harry's crazy initial theory held any water at all. By this time, mankind had already charged through to the twilight years of the 21st century. The year 2080 had arrived, and scientists had unlocked the secret behind Human Evolution. By this time, 80% of people born in the past thirty years were either already born with these abilities, or developed them in their infant years. Those older than that had developed them in their later ages, while those that didn't possess anything were already on the verge of passing from old age. Humans who possessed these abilities became known as "Evolved," while the rest were simply called "Old Ones." A large contingent of scientists who banded together to find the secret behind the Evolved had published a huge research paper simply titled, "The Science behind the Evolved."

The paper stipulated that due to the Primogenitor technology allowing humans to expel all impurities within the air, a new element that had only been written about in ancient civilizations called "Ether" had been confirmed to truly exist. Inhalation of high amounts of ether allowed humans to strengthen their bodies, not unlike the concept behind "cultivation" in fantasy stories. The power of ether was still mostly untapped, and the fact that ether was the secret behind humans developing the equivalent of superpowers was undisputed. The research paper then also put forth the groundbreaking conclusion that ether could also be used as an alternate power source, even more efficient than nuclear power, which had already been decommissioned in the 2060's and replaced with enhanced forms of sustainable energy despite it still being somewhat less efficient than pure nuclear power. 

Ether became the ultimate resource, since it could be reproduced indefinitely from plant life and other oxygen creating organisms. Humanity could charge forth into uncharted territory and pioneer a new age in technology. This became the Age of Evolution, not unlike the Renaissance Age in the late 13th and early 14th centuries...
