The word folklore, a compound of folk and lore, was coined in 1846 by the Englishman William Thoms,[2] who contrived the term as a replacement for the contemporary terminology of "popular antiquities" or "popular literature". The second half of the word, lore, comes from Old English lār 'instruction'. It is the knowledge and traditions of a particular group, frequently passed along by word of mouth.[3]
The concept of folk has varied over time. When Thoms first created this term, folk applied only to rural, frequently poor and illiterate peasants. A more modern definition of folk is a social group that includes two or more persons with common traits, who express their shared identity through distinctive traditions. "Folk is a flexible concept which can refer to a nation as in American folklore or to a single family."[4] This expanded social definition of folk supports a broader view of the material, i.e. the lore, considered to be folklore artifacts. These now include all "things people make with words (verbal lore), things they make with their hands (material lore), and things they make with their actions (customary lore)".[5] Folklore is no longer considered to be limited to that which is old or obsolete. The folklorist studies the traditional artifacts of a social group and how they are transmitted. Transmission is a vital part of the folklore process; without communicating these beliefs and customs within the group over space and time, they would be relegated to cultural archaeologists. These folk artifacts continue to be passed along informally, as a rule anonymously, and always in multiple variants. The folk group is not individualistic, it is community-based and nurtures its lore in community. "As new groups emerge, new folklore is created… surfers, motorcyclists, computer programmers".[6] In direct contrast to high culture, where any single work of a named artist is protected by copyright law, folklore is a function of shared identity within a common social group.[7]
Having identified folk artifacts, the professional folklorist strives to understand the significance of these beliefs, customs, and objects for the group, since these cultural units[8] would not be passed along unless they had some continued relevance within the group. That meaning can however shift and morph, for example: the Halloween celebration of the 21st century is not the All Hallows' Eve of the Middle Ages, and even gives rise to its own set of urban legends independent of the historical celebration; the cleansing rituals of Orthodox Judaism were originally good public health in a land with little water, but now these customs signify for some people identification as an Orthodox Jew. By comparison, a common action such as tooth brushing, which is also transmitted within a group, remains a practical hygiene and health issue and does not rise to the level of a group-defining tradition.[9] Tradition is initially remembered behavior; once it loses its practical purpose, there is no reason for further transmission unless it has been imbued with meaning beyond the initial practicality of the action. This meaning is at the core of folkloristics, the study of folklore.[10]
With an increasingly theoretical sophistication of the social sciences, it has become evident that folklore is a naturally occurring and necessary component of any social group; it is indeed all around us.[11] Folklore does not have to be old or antiquated, it continues to be created and transmitted, and in any group it is used to differentiate between "us" and "them".
Origin and development of folklore studies[edit]

Folklore began to distinguish itself as an autonomous discipline during the period of romantic nationalism in Europe. A particular figure in this development was Johann Gottfried von Herder, whose writings in the 1770s presented oral traditions as organic processes grounded in locale. After the German states were invaded by Napoleonic France, Herder's approach was adopted by many of his fellow Germans who systematized the recorded folk traditions and used them in their process of nation building. This process was enthusiastically embraced by smaller nations like Finland, Estonia, and Hungary, which were seeking political independence from their dominant neighbours.[12]
Folklore as a field of study further developed among 19th century European scholars who were contrasting tradition with the newly developing modernity. Its focus was the oral folklore of the rural peasant populations, which were considered as residue and survivals of the past that continued to exist within the lower strata of society.[13] The "Kinder- und Hausmärchen" of the Brothers Grimm (first published 1812) is the best known but by no means only collection of verbal folklore of the European peasantry of that time. This interest in stories, sayings and songs continued throughout the 19th century and aligned the fledgling discipline of folkloristics with literature and mythology. By the turn into the 20th century the number and sophistication of folklore studies and folklorists had grown both in Europe and North America. Whereas European folklorists remained focused on the oral folklore of the homogenous peasant populations in their regions, the American folklorists, led by Franz Boas and Ruth Benedict, chose to consider Native American cultures in their research, and included the totality of their customs and beliefs as folklore. This distinction aligned American folkloristics with cultural anthropology and ethnology, using the same techniques of data collection in their field research. This divided alliance of folkloristics between the humanities in Europe and the social sciences in America offers a wealth of theoretical vantage points and research tools to the field of folkloristics as a whole, even as it continues to be a point of discussion within the field itself.[14]
The term folkloristics, along with the alternative name folklore studies,[note 1] became widely used in the 1950s to distinguish the academic study of traditional culture from the folklore artifacts themselves. When the American Folklife Preservation Act (Public Law 94-201) was passed by the U.S. Congress in January 1976,[15] to coincide with the Bicentennial Celebration, folkloristics in the United States came of age.
"…[Folklife] means the traditional expressive culture shared within the various groups in the United States: familial, ethnic, occupational, religious, regional; expressive culture includes a wide range of creative and symbolic forms such as custom, belief, technical skill, language, literature, art, architecture, music, play, dance, drama, ritual, pageantry, handicraft; these expressions are mainly learned orally, by imitation, or in performance, and are generally maintained without benefit of formal instruction or institutional direction."
Added to the extensive array of other legislation designed to protect the natural and cultural heritage of the United States, this law also marks a shift in national awareness. It gives voice to a growing understanding that cultural diversity is a national strength and a resource worthy of protection. Paradoxically, it is a unifying feature, not something that separates the citizens of a country. "We no longer view cultural difference as a problem to be solved, but as a tremendous opportunity. In the diversity of American folklife we find a marketplace teeming with the exchange of traditional forms and cultural ideas, a rich resource for Americans".[16] This diversity is celebrated annually at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and many other folklife fests around the country.

Decompensated cirrhosis, portal hypertension, hypoalbuminemia, electrolyte imbalance, ascites, hydrothorax…
The list of diagnoses was long and blurry.
It looked like this patient had a hepatitis B infection that had progressed to hepatic cirrhosis, splenomegaly, and portal hypertension. This had then led to refractory ascites.
The earlier diagnosis was similar to a disease progression of hepatitis.
Decompensated cirrhosis would lead to two fatal complications—hematemesis and ascites.
When the ascites developed into refractory ascites, the usual diuretic treatment would not work. The ascites would result in hypoalbuminemia, leading to the leakage of fluids, worsening the ascites, and further lowering the albumin levels.
It became a vicious cycle.
The clinical treatment of ascites and hypoalbuminemia were diuretics and an intravenous infusion of human albumin.
With the presence of refractory ascites, it did not matter how much human albumin was transfused as it would just leak out as ascites.
This complication was different from hematemesis. Even though hematemesis seemed more urgent than refractory ascites, hematemesis caused by portal hypertension was treatable with general surgery.
Before the emergence of TIPS surgery, patients with refractory ascites could only sit and wait to die. Even now, TIPS surgery was extremely difficult to execute, and only Class Three Grade A Hospitals in cities as big as provincial capitals were equipped enough to perform it.
Without TIPS surgery, patients diagnosed with this disease were pretty much getting sentenced to their deaths. 
The patient would be in excruciating pain, suffering slowly while life ran its course.
Zheng Ren performed a simple checkup and questioned the patient about his condition when the labs were back.
The resident beside Chief Xia answered the questions in an orderly manner. The diagnosis by gastroenterology and the System's monitor was similar.
There were no specific contraindications, so the patient was cleared for surgery.
Zheng Ren said, "Chief Xia, the patient did a liver DW-MRI. I've submitted the request for surgery tomorrow."
"DW-MRI?" Chief Xia was stunned.
DW-MRI, diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in full.
DW-MRI differed from the usual MRI. DW-MRI utilized diffusion of water molecules to generate contrast by mapping the movements of water molecules in biological tissues, such as the brain, to provide clinical information.
It was mostly used for neurological treatment.
It could diagnose acute brain ischemia at a 94% sensitivity rate and 100% specificity. It could also reliably differentiate between an arachnoid cyst and epidermoid cyst, subdural empyema and subdural hygroma, and necrotic abscess and tumor.
Why did Zheng Ren order a DW-MRI for a TIPS surgery?
Chief Xia heard of how the experts from Imperial Capital and Sorcery Capital used DW-MRI to visualize the tumor. However, this patient was suffering from refractory ascites as a result of liver cirrhosis progression, not a tumor.

Chief Xia hummed softly.
Zheng Ren did not explain his decision further to Chief Xia. This was a preoperative assessment for TIPS surgery that he devised in the System's operating room after countless practices. He had used it to locate the position of the portal vein and hepatic vein so that his catheterization had a higher rate of success.
If he were to explain from the very beginning, he would not be able to finish telling him the reasons why even after several days.
Zheng Ren was also too lazy to deal with other things.
After briefing Chief Xia about the patient, Zheng Ren took his leave and headed to the ICU.
He changed and entered the ICU ward. The ward had a strong, depressing atmosphere.
The chief of the medical administration division was sitting in the ward with deep, furrowed brows.
Su Yun was seated beside Yang Lili's bed, his fringe swaying in front of his forehead while his head was buried in lab reports.

Mental disorders?
Zheng Ren was stunned.
There was no mental disorder shown on the diagnosis on the System's monitor.
"The routine blood work was mostly normal. The surgery's aseptic environment was maintained well with no obvious signs of infection. Biochemistry analysis: 15.49 mmol/L of glucose, 134 mmol/L of sodium, and 4.15 mmol/L of potassium. Blood gas analysis: pH 7.46, 61 mmHg partial pressure of oxygen, 38 mmol/L of bicarbonate, 3 mmol/L base excess, and keto acids: +++." Su Yun dictated the entire emergency lab report from this morning without even looking at the papers in his hand.
"How was Yang Lili's mental state?" Zheng Ren asked with a frown.
"Extreme, intense fear, like phobia," Su Yun said. "It was as if she had seen a ghost. She had an intense episode of emergency agitation and the hand straps couldn't hold her down. Her heart rate shot up from 95 to 156 beats per min after we stopped administering sedatives."
"That's strange." Zheng Ren recalled the lab results that Su Yun had just told him. The overall results seemed fine. It only had a slight increase in blood glucose, urine glucose, and keto acids. He considered that this was the body's acute stress reaction in response to a traumatic injury.

This would not be easy to explain.
Could the intense shock from the incident have left her with psychological trauma?
It was possible. Nonetheless, psychological treatment was still a new branch of science in the country. Zheng Ren did not know any experts in the field.
More importantly, the psychiatrist would not be able to give Yang Lili counseling in her condition.

He should be able to derive a conclusion based on the combinatorial results from the body examination and the System's diagnosis.
Could it be cardiac insufficiency due to the large volume of postoperative fluid replacement? Zheng Ren pondered. He then asked, "What was her input volume?"
Su Yun shook his head. Obviously, he had already thought of this.
"The postoperative fluid output was significantly lesser than the fluid input. On the first day post-surgery, the difference between fluid input-output had decreased. They reached the same volume as of yesterday."
They administered a larger volume of fluid replacement because Yang Lili had lost a significant amount of blood.
Besides Yang Lili's young and healthy body, she was able to recover just 2 days after surgery because of Su Yun and the ICU medical staff's hard work.
Furthermore, Yang Lili had no family history of cardiovascular disease, so he eliminated the possibility of cardiac insufficiency.

"Nonsense. Humans have a saying: strike iron when it's hot. This is one of the few times that they are right. If you rest now, your body will become callus to mana. That might indeed increase your constitution however, it will also be stagnant. It will put up a resistance everytime you want to cast a spell, which will decrease the efficiency. What you want to achieve are mana pathways in your body, which will allow smooth movement and control of mana."
'Ugh. Fine, I guess I agreed to that.' Tom said, while stuffing his face with meaty, tasty mushrooms that he had cooked the night before. 
'So what would you have me do?'
"I would like you to create a wisp. A wisp is defined as concentrated, processed mana, which is detached from the mage, who still has full control of it. As you already know, your constitution is barely good enough to survive the full power of your core and, before you ask, no, your core is nothing to write home about. Therefore, you have the difficult task of manipulating mana without straining your core. If you strain your core, your core will start to grow stronger, which won't be good for you. Teaching you by telling you how to do something will turn you into a copy of whoever taught you. Giving you a vague destination will make you choose and pave your own path, a path which no one else has travelled and no one else ever will."
'Fine.'
Tom closed his eyes and forced his core to vibrate to release the mana from his core. He focused and created a mental connection between his core and his mind. He guided the mana through his right hand. He could feel the fragile mana pathways forming from his core to his right hand. When he realised this, he got worried and guided more mana through his left hand. He stopped the release of mana from his core and completely focused on the mana in his arms.
He guided the mana into his palms. He wanted to push the mana out of his hands but he felt that the connection was getting weaker the further it was getting from his body. The initial headache disappeared and was replaced with euphoria. 
Two small balls of mana, around five centimeters in diameter, slowly emerged from his palms. The one in his left hand was smaller than the one in his right hand. Even though they were no longer connected to him, it felt as though the mana was still a part of him. A true extension of his being. He wanted to see how far he could push the two wisps that he had created. 
When the wisps had reached the distance of about twenty centimeters from Tom, he lost the connection with the bigger one. However, he managed to stay connected for another five centimeters with the smaller one. 
He opened his eyes and released a disappointed gasp. 
'Shoot. I lost them.'
"You sound disappointed."
'Why shouldn't I be? I can only control a wisp at a very short distance.'
Tom could feel the glare Kavarath was giving him.
"I was expecting you to fail, at least on your first try. Most don't manage to create a wisp during their first week of practice. It took you less than five minutes to create two simultaneously. It is true that you have a weak constitution and core. We can easily fix that. However, your talent for mana manipulation is something many would sell their souls for. Damn sorcerers!"
Tom stopped listening half way through Kavarath's explanation and closed his eyes. He completed the same steps once more but this time, rather than ejecting the mana through his palms, he divided the mana into five equal parts. Those parts then traveled through his fingers, creating more mana pathways. Then he concentrated them even further into small balls, each around one millimeter thick.
The balls slowly emerged from his fingers. This time they disappeared after a one meter distance.
"I hate you." 
'Why what's wrong? I thought you wanted me to practice.' 
"You call this practicing? You have made a major breakthrough. You have managed to increase the amount of wisps you can control by five fold, whilst doing the same to the range. You don't even know how unfair that is. Most spend months improving their technique. While you just do it as if it's normal."
'Jeez. I didn't know you were such a drama queen.'
"I am not! So how did you do it? What was your logic behind it?"
'The first time that I tried manipulating the mana, I noticed that, when I was controlling the mana in just my right hand, it was extremely easy. Once I added the same amount of mana into my left hand, it became a bit more difficult to control it. Not because of coordination, but because they felt heavier, as if the total amount is more difficult to control due to strain rather than the number due to coordination.'
'I compressed the wisp in my left hand before I released it. That whisp travelled a bit further. I noticed an interesting property of mana. It is surprisingly compressible. Once it is compressed, it feels like the connection becomes stronger. Therefore, I thought that I wouldn't have a problem controlling ten wisps, if I greatly compressed them. Once that happened, my range also increased because the connection was stronger.'
"Hmm. Your perception and inquisiveness is scary."
'Thank you.' Tom said, while performing an over-exaggerated bow. 
'I don't think that at this point I will be able to control much more mana at a time. If I do, I will strain my core and I want to avoid that. Is there a faster way of filling your core than just waiting for it to replenish through diffusion, from the surroundings to my core? It seems that the diffusion stops while I control processed mana, as it repels the ambient mana.'
"There is, but it is too soon for that."
'Got it.'
For the rest of the day Tom went through cycles of manipulating wisps and then resting and allowing the mana to naturally get replenished. 
At the end of the day he was capable of controlling twelve wisps, at a maximum distance of one meter. One wisp from each finger and palm. Kavarath was impressed with the progress Tom was making however, Tom could feel a tinge of envy from Kavarath.  
Tom found an inverse relationship between the number of wisps he could control and the maximum distance. If he focused on only one wisp, he was able to control it at a maximum distance of three meters. 
The euphoria that he felt whilst learning mana manipulation was incomparable to anything he had experienced up to this point. He felt addicted to the power it gave him and loved it for the endless experiments he could conduct with it.

Tom is a twenty year old university student who is pulled into a world of magic against his will. He finds that he has an aptitude for all types of magic this world has to offer, thus he is considered to be a  sorcerer in a world dominated by mages, dragons, vampires and other mythical creatures.

A recorder? Lin Ke was disappointed and had many questions. According to the plot in my previous life, didn't the Desert Prince become a rich man in Sand City and ultimately die of old age? Why did his corpse end up in the secret passageway, three levels below Howling Ancient Castle?
He had so many questions that he wanted answers to.
The remains in front of him were completely devoid of flesh and blood, leaving only a luxurious attire and dense white bones. It seemed like the person had died a long time ago.

Prisistka of course know about First Holy Emperor Wilhelm. The story of him that conquers lands from sunset to sunrise can be found in first chapters of commonly used standard History textbook. His Realm where Sun Never Sets later known as 『Holy Empire Midsea』, a name that later inherited to become the continent name. The 『Common Language Eanla』 and 『Common Letter Parlak』 that was used by many nations in Midsea continent come from this Unification period.

"Wha….."

Prisistka is surprised, after all the Victorious Army are said to be the best of their Time and to be slaughtered under one hour, are you sure the 『Nameless Kingdom』's Silver Brigade is composed by humans and not some kind of Magic Beasts?

(The answer: She always falls asleep when Sauz give lectures about the background event related to Holy Empire founding.)

Prisistka didn't understand the reason the United Army tried to invade 『Nameless Kingdom』 rather than pursue and annihilate the Demonic Race completely from the continent. The answer to this is now long forgotten since all document related to this affair is completely erased by the successor countries.

I know this, Prisistka thought, this is the cause why Spikefang Wyvern are now considered a rare species. The Wyvern population is so depleted that even after 300 years it still haven't recovered, so the currently common used species tamed for wyvern corps is their smaller cousin the Two Tail Wyvern. This wasn't much of a problem since『Ember Kingdoms』use gryphons aerial corps, thus it doesn't really matter.

"The Fifth time is 250 years ago when the 『Ghost Horse Tribe Horde』 overwhelmed the whole continent using their heavy cavalry and mobile infantry with unprecedented mobility. But even the 500, 000 heavy cavalry is wiped out like falling leaves in the autumn."

By this time, Prisitka didn't show any surprise expression and rather tired listening to high-number of war casualties in history. Is it really important?

Going back, Joy and I read the recent chapters of the novel with Li Lei inviting them with the reporter to meet Er Mao. Naturally, we were engrossed until Joy started throwing a fuss about how much she loved Li Lei.

Joy: 😡*shakes Kim's shoulders* oh come on, you don't like Pei Ziheng, you also don't like Li Lei. You even have this conspiracy about Xia Moyan and Ye Shaohui 😖🤔.. Li Lei is a great guy!

Kim:😕 okay. I mean, yes, I know that. But come on, haven't you noticed something strange about this novel?

Kim: Realistically speaking, It's kind of disturbing how Xiao Ling is always at wits end even though she is the Phoenix. Think about it, of all the characters in the novel, the author time and again has said that she is the most powerful character. So, how come this powerful character became imprisoned at one point, protected at one point, by men? I mean, you know ahahahahahaha, tsk.

Joy: *replies in a soft whisperish tone* I know.

Kim: You know me, Joy. *looks at Joy with that fearless and vulnerable gaze* I just want to see women strong enough to stand and protect themselves on their own, even in novels. Men, whether in real life or fiction, cannot really protect their lovers at all times. This is also an unfair burden on their part that society has forced on to them.

Joy: You don't like Li Lei, don't you?

Kim: No. Even Xia Moyan, I don't hate him, and I know the author is saying that through characters like him, people can see that men aren't just bringers of misfortune for women. It's just that, how come there are very few female confidants with their female protagonists? Think about it, Ye Qingtang, Jiang Pengji, Ling Lan... where is that female sisterhood when these novels are meant to be read by females? I have nothing against women sharing brotherhood with men, but the lack of powerful sisterhood is too uncanny, even in Yun Loufeng's end, her friend had to be revived. . . 

Joy: You know that there is radical patriarchy in their region of the world.

Kim: I know, that's why I am hurt. I am Chinese, proud of the cultural heritage I could read and learn from, never been to China but fudge, my blood boils with how proud I am of the rich culture they've maintained even when the world began to go global...but... sometimes the deep rooted cultural patriarchy in Chinese novels just runs too deep. It has feminism, but subliminally, the patriarchal touch is evident. 

Joy: *Laughs* touch?

Kim: *laughs at the realization of what Joy meant* More like theme.


Joy: Okay, fine. *sighs* you know, because of being this aware and active, I think you won't get a boyfriend so easily...😞

Good day, this is a fictional blog of a character I call Kim?

Kim is the type of person who is innocent, smart, but at the same time is fully aware of the evils of the world. Somehow, she still keeps a hopeful stance in life. She even works out and takes self-defense classes because she thinks that for her to feel freedom, she needs to invest on ways to keep her feelings of being free... immense.

Personally, she is like an imaginary friend for me. The type of friend that I wished existed and was there to help me empower my womanhood.

Some of my friends usually have fun when talking with me about women's empowerment and issues that were faced then and now.

So, I thought why not share these moments of bliss with everybody.

I also added a Webnovel Readers' segments on this fictional blog, so every once in a while, the blog will talk about some novels in webnovel. Naturally, everything said in the blog is my personal opinion, feel free to have a differing perpective.
