A magical cookbook.

"Are you ready, darling?" Mom asked.

I nodded my head as a response.

It was just a typical day and we were going out visiting my grandma since grandpa isn't there to keep her company anymore. 

Grandma's cooking was the best, and nothing can top that.

Mom and I are heading to her house.

I was looking at every houses that we passesd.

Each one of them are familiar.

Sometimes I could see two or three of my friends house that I met on the playground.

I was watching at the houses that we pass by. Until we arrived at Grandma's.

I ran out as fast as I could towards grandma.

"Well, if it isn't my granddaughter Astra!" she happily exclaimed.

"I bet you came here just to taste my cooking am I right, Honey?"

I chuckled.

"You know me too well, Granny."

Then my mom came closer to us bringing a basket with lots of fruits that we prepared this morning.

"Hi Mom," she greeted and kissed Granny's cheeks.

"Hey, Astrid." Granny beamed.

Then Granny looked at me.

"Now why won't we go inside now." Granny said as mom and I both followed Gramma inside her lovely cabin.

As we were walking, she asked.

"What would you like to eat? Tell me so that I could prepare the ingredients."

I looked at my mom and she smiled at me.

We talked about surprising granny about my cooking skills this morning.

Mom said that she'll let me borrow one of granny's cookbook and cook granny's favorite chicken soup, while both of mom and granny will go out for a nice walk.

I looked at Granny and smiled sweetly.

"How bout you cook later and you and mom go outside for a nice walk. Now isn't that great?" I exclaimed.

Granny stopped for a moment and looked at me.

"Are you sure, Astra?" She asked, pouting.

"Yes Grandma, Besides I'm still not yet hungry." I replied.

Grandma then gave ne a huge toothy grin.

"Okay, now. How bout we'll go on for a walk." the said while dragging mom toward the door.

"We have a lot to talk about." she whispered at my mom's ear but I could weirdly hear it.

Then after a few moments,I heard the door closed.

I look back and saw no signs of their presence.

I heaved a sigh and got to the kitchen swiftly.

As I was walking, looking for a cookbook at some if the kitchen's cabinets.

I heard a sound.

Meow.

Meow.

Meow.

I looked everywhere, and then my eyes landed on a black cat near the kitchen's window.

It was looking at me from outside.

I ran towards the window and opened it.

"Are you lost little kitty?" I asked but then realized that the cat was stray since there's no sign of collar around it.

I then ignored it but left the window open. I head back to the kitchen when suddenly I saw a glimpse of a cookbook near the dark hallway grandma forbids us to go.

Hmm. It wouldn't hurt to try and cook something so why not get the cookbook? 

I thought.

I then got the cookbook. There's a lot of dust covering the book but I still managed to wipe it off.

When the book was fully cleaned, I looked at it's cover.

It says

"fœrbïdėń ßpęłłbœœk"

I did not mind even there's a weird title outside so I opened the cookbook casually.

Then I finally found chicken soup recipe.

But weirdly it says here, the recipe needs pig blood.

I shrugged it off and starting preparing the ingredients.

Pig blood.
A pebble.
Chicken body.
Gasoline.
Candle.
Red ink.
Water.
A hair strand.

And while mixing it all recite the following

Ut ejus semper et gustare quod pulmenti, erit per factorem amare

My forehead knotted when I read those. I never saw granny once reciting while cooking.

But might as well give it a try.

Since I lack ingredients in the house, I made my own.

Since there's no Pig blood, I then replaced it with tomato juice.

Then I got a pebble from outside.

Grandma doesn't have a whole chicken body in the fridge so I replaced it with chichen legs and wings.

Since there is no gasoline in the house, I prepared oil.

And for the candle, I think that it would take more that an hour to cook the soup in it so Instead of a candle, I prepared the stove. 

For the red ink, I prepared food coloring.

Water and My hair strand is present.

I opened the stove and added tomato juice, cooking oil, a pebble, chicken, water and a hair strand.

I then mixed it after a minute, when it certainly is hot. 

I decided to recite the word from the cookbook out loud.

"U ejus semper et gustar quo punti, 
erit per factorem amare." I recited.

Nothing happens. Weird.

I was about to turn my back when suddenly the book shone then a man suddenly appeared.

He was sitting on the ground and was massaging his neck.

His black hair was long enough to cover his left eye.

He was wearing a black aviator jacket.

He have an olive white skin and his eyes are emerald green.

He was maybe on his 20's according to his appearance.

"How...." He ask.

"Huh?"

"H-how can you summon me?! The spell summoning me was supposed to be destroyed 2000 years ago!" He shouted.

"I don't know! You were supposed to be chicken soup!" I shouted back.

He then massaged his head and 
looked at me.

"Look kid, since you have summoned me. I'm going to grant you four wishes."

I looked at him grinning.

"Really?" I asked

"Yeah, yeah. Whatever."

"Well in that case—"

"Hey, not too fast kiddo. First of all, you must write your wish in a paper. And to be able to grant your wishes, you must offer me your soul." The Man said as he slumped over to ties his shoelace.

"Offer my what now?"

"You heard me right, your soul."

Then suddenly the door opened, and grandma and mom came in.

I looked at where the guy is but he's not there.

Was I hallucinating? 

"Darling! I thought you are cooking chicken soup! But that lemon meyer
fried Fritata is much more better!" Granny said as she pointed at my cooking.

I looked back at what I was cooking and saw this gorgeous looking meal that I didn't remember cooking earlier.

"Well, uh. Bon Appetit?"

On the day where Astra met him, she didn’t know that it was fated. She was simply living her life normally but seems like destiny is playful and seems like they really are meant together.

"Who I was before? I don't know. Should I worry? Maybe? Will I save the world? Yeah, not my problem. Good luck, though. My little sister is in trouble! Get outta my way! Big bro is coming to help! Even if I have to leave the world to its destruction!"

Days...rolled into weeks and months....another year elapsed.

This year, Jessy would like to celebrate her 18th birthday with her friends. So, one month before her birthday, she already called Ivy~inviting her along with Nathan and Matthew on her 18th birthday.

It will be nice seeing them again.

Holding Nana Aida's cookbook in her hands, she perused the delectable menu for her birthday. Nana Aida will bake a cake for her, it will be design into a rose with steam and all. She does wonder how the cake will look like after Nana made it? Will it look like how she envisioned it to be?

She made a list of the dishes in her notebook: Baked Macaroni and Cheese, Roasted Pumpkin Cream Soup, Chinese Braised Pork Belly with Dark Soy, Pineapple Fried Rice, Singaporean Chili Crab, and Crunchy Korean Fried Chicken.

Hmmm, she's done with the food list, pleased with the choices she made, she smiled.

The door to her room opened. 

Adam walked to her side and kissed her cheek.

"What are you doing?" he skimmed over her notes.

"Planning for my 18th birthday! I already invited Ivy, Nathan, and Matthew" she said in an excited voice.

"Great! Let me check your food list, Jess." He read her list and grimaced. "Why human blood is not on your list? It's my favorite dish!" he grumbled.

She sighed. "Okay, I will request Nana to make a pork meat stew with human blood and lot's of chili, how does it sound?"

They looked at each other...

Then they dissolved into heaps of laughter.

A few moments later...Adam become silent.

"Ah, I felt sorry of myself. Why I can't even attend my girlfriend's birthday party?" he continued his ranting.

Jessy felt sad watching his gloomy face.

"I can introduce you to them," she said in a clear voice. "Yeah, why not-?" her face beamed with determination.

Wait...

Adam stared at her girlfriend's face in amazement. "You want me to...to ruin your grand celebration? With my hideous look?" 

She ignored his doubt and hesitation.

"Nah, don't worry much about it. My friends are not a bunch of as*holes, they won't judge you harshly because of your looks. They are a friendly bunch," she said. She still has lingering doubts though, but she won't let Adam know about it. She doesn't want to hurt his feelings.

"I will think about it. On the other hand, it would be a good chance to scare them upfront, what their reaction would be?" he grinned from ear to ear, imagining their reaction, they will surely be horrified. 

Jessy punched him on his arms. "Jesus! Don't ever think about doing another prank again!" she scolded him.

"Don't worry-I will behave then," he turns serious.

She caresses the area of his arms where she punched earlier. "But I really want you to join us in my birthday party. I think it's about time you will have a chance to meet and talk with them. That will be fun," the more she thinks about it the more she wants to really do it.

"Am okay with your idea, meeting them will be cool. Let's just hope they won't run and hide after they will see me," he mumbled.

Adam lay down on Jess' bed, staring at the ceiling above. He lay still and kept to himself.

Jess' watched him with a quizzical look. She went to the bed and lay down on his belly.

"Do you think my hair looks good with brown? I want to color it brown for my birthday and if it looks good I will keep it permanent," she said while looking at his eyes.

"Ah, Jess. Please don't color your hair. You got a beautiful hair already, it's black and shiny. I love it that way. After I'm gone you can do anything you want with your hair. You can even go bald if you want," he said joking.

She pinched him on his side. It produces rich laughter from him.

"Hmm, which you love the most me or my hair?" asked Jess.

Adam chuckled. "You of course, your hair is just part of you. I love everything about you," he twirled his fingers around her hair. 

"Awww sweet." She giggled and snuggled closer to him.

He enveloped her in his awaiting arms. They hold each other in a comfortable silence.

"Nana, is it possible for Adam to attend my 18th birthday? I want Ivy, Nathan, and Matthew to meet him in person. Maybe it's about time for Adam to experience mingling with other people up close. His end is near, we can make this party a memorable one for him. I want to make it a different unforgettable experience for him. What do you think, Nana?" 

The older woman looked at Jessy with skepticism in her eyes. 

"I will see what I can do, Jess..."

"D-do you think, Nathan, Matthew, and Ivy will not freak out if they see Adam?" asked Jess.

"N-not sure, Jess." Nana Aida felt uneasy with Jess' request. Although she's proud of her children's good upbringing, still she can't guarantee that they will behave in good manners if they will see Adam.

Jessy looked at her Nana's face intently, she can read the doubts, uncertainty, and worries on her face.

"Nah, forget it...Nana, I guess am asking for too much," Jessy said sadly.

Nana Aida's eyebrows rose...

"What I'm afraid of is that Adam might get hurt in the process if my children will behave in a different way. Adam is comfortable with you and me, not sure if he will act the same if he is around with people he's not accustom hanging out with," she explained.

"Adam said he will try to be nice and cordial with my friends. He will try his best," said Jessy.

Nana Aida stays silent for a while, lost in her own thoughts. 

"Never mind Nana, just forget what I told you earlier. Let's not torment ourselves with my need for Adam to join us on my birthday celebration." She intended to drop the issue and go on discussing her preparation regarding the dishes to be cooked in the event.

Jessy lay the cookbook on the kitchen table. She pointed out the variety of dishes she wants. Nana Aida looked at the dishes and nodded.

"Sorry-It's a lot of dishes this time. Don't worry I help you prepare and cook all the dishes, Nana." 

The older woman looked at Jessy with love and fondness. She wants Jessy to be thoroughly happy on her 18th birthday and she also wants Adam to join and enjoy the celebration. She still has many days to think of a concrete plan, actually, she already had a plan. Just that she's not sure if it will work successfully. But there's no harm in trying...

"That's all the dishes I want to be prepared, Nana. Are you okay with all that?" she glanced at her list of dishes.
 
"No problem, Jess. Let's make it a dinner party so that we have all morning to prepare the dishes and the cake."

Jessy nodded. She's beaming with excitement with all the planning. Nothing should go wrong!

I hear a soft melody being played somewhere, the beautiful sound was drawing me in and with my tiny feet I walked towards it, passing through the empty corridor. 

What is this song? It seems sad yet warm.

I stand beside the piano.

"Do you know what this piece is called?" Someone asked me but I just blink in confusion.
"The name of life."

I wake up with a heavy head. It took me more time to focus my vision than usual since I was under the influence of medications. I sat in bed thinking. Did I dream about something? I feel like I did but I can't remember.

I got up, got dressed and went down in the kitchen. It was still very early. I wonder if Lexus is still asleep? I haven't seen him for a few days since I mostly stayed in my room and slept all day.
I opened up the fridge and smiled. At least now it looks like a fridge with stuff in it. 

Should I make something? Looking at the stuff I nodded to myself, took out the ingredients and started cooking after looking at a recipe from the cookbook.

I made omurice. There was still material left so I could make another but when I did start eating I realized it's a pretty heavy dish. 

Almost at the point of finishing it I heard footsteps and I froze in my seat next to the kitchen counter. At that point I realized how quiet the place usually is, one can even hear footsteps so clearly.

Lexus descended the stairs and paused for a second. I slowly turned around and glanced at him then flinched. He was looking at me.

"W-would you like some b-breakfast?" I asked and he began walking again, "I'm sure it tastes fine." 

My voice was shaky. I was feeling guilty for eating like I owned the place. Since I didn't see him for a while, I completely forgot he would be here at this time too. It was only eight.

I feel like I was caught doing something bad.

Lexus stood right in front of me, his calm grey eyes staring down at me as I looked up at him, nervous.

He raised his hand and my attention shot there. He reached for my face, his fingers touching my cheek and his thumb touching corner of my lips. He rubbed the lower corner and cheek with his thumb and then let go. I noticed the grain and sauce on his thumb.

Yes. I end up with sauces on my face quite a lot, I'm ashamed. 

Lexus licked his thumb and my eyes grew wide.

"Not bad." He said.

Oh my God!?!! Why did he do that?!!! That was on my lips!!! That's embarrassing!! My face better not be red!

"S-sh-should I make you s-some?" Oh my God! Why am I stuttering so much?!!

Lexus looked at me for a second then turned his head and placed his hand on his mouth and tried suppressing his smile, (Although I still managed to see the corner of his lips curl up)
Is he laughing at me?!!

I could feel my ears get hot.

"I don't need it." I glanced at him and he had already regained his composure. He then began walking and left for work.

I touched my cheeks. They were hot. I was embarrassed. I pursed my lips. But more than anything I was surprised. I had discovered a new emotion in him. Even though he didn't show me, he was definitely suppressing his laugh.

So he is a human after all.

I turned and looked at my food. Picking up the spoon again I began playing with it.
I wonder why he's so cold then? It almost makes him look like a ferocious yet beautiful beast. His eyes are so calm and void. I remember looking into them and my heart beat began accelerating. It seems like there is a war behind those icy stares.

I lightly tap the side of my head.

The most frightening thing a girl can imagine is being abandoned. But what's worse? 
Being sold at an auction, naked and afraid and then being bought as a toy.

Rosalie never thought she would actually end up getting sold at an auction. Her life wasn't all flowers but still she didn't want to end up a salve. When the worst was happening she gets sold to a billionaire.

Eiro sat on his chair and kept looking at his party members. They seemed to have calmed down a little after all these revelations from Eiro. They were still nervous, but they were also aware that they wouldn't be able to just get away from here all too easily even if they did want to try and fight Eiro.
But then, Jess slowly looked at Eiro and opened her mouth nervously, "I have to admit... I think that maybe, if anyone is the Monster King, then wouldn't it be the best possible outcome if it was Eiro?" She pointed out, and the demon in question lightly smirked. Meanwhile, James was staring at Jess, thinking about what she just said.
"I think..." James muttered, "I think you may be right? I mean, apparently, you don't have your monstrosity, or whatever it is that you spoke about that makes monsters monsters." James said, "Sure, you're doing a lot of pretty fucked up things a lot of the time, but there's a fair amount of people that do that act similarly to you, if not worse." The Light Elf added, and Eiro slowly nodded his head.
"Glad you think that way." Eiro said with a smile on his face, "So, how about it? Are you going to help me?" The Demon asked, and the three of them looked at Eiro nervously, before James asked, "We're still aiming for Zaragon as well, right?"
"Oh yeah, of course we are. That's going to be our first target. He seems to be a fair bit weaker than a Royal, so he should be a good stepping stone." Eiro pointed out, and Krog stared back at him, "That Zaragon's weaker than a royal?"
"Mhm, he is. I think I mentioned it before, but I met someone that was of the exact same race as that guy. The exact same being, or at least, it spoke of Zaragon as one of its 'Kin'. A few moments later, that guy was killed by <The World>, a heavily weakened <The World>. They have special abilities that are hard to overcome, but once you reach that point, I don't think they're all too strong." Eiro pointed out, and he slowly turned toward James, "So don't worry. We'll get strong enough so that we can make him suffer very easily. We'll crush Zaragon like a bug."
James stared back at Eiro, feeling somewhat nervous because of the vibe the Demon was giving off. It was one of definite bloodlust. Even if it wasn't strong enough to take Eiro's control from him, it was still at the level as back then when he was first taken over by it. His Willpower increased a lot since then, so he could easily control emotions like that at this point.
"Fine. As long as we can get that guy, I'll do what you want." James said with a sigh, "And it's really not like finding this new stuff out changes anything. You're obviously genuine with your feelings for your children, and just because you're apparently a Royal now shouldn't change anything. You already were when we met you again, so..." The Light Elf pointed out.
"Hah, thanks. But you're not actually correct, I'm not <The World> yet. Otherwise that Card would have probably disappeared inside me already. No, I'm just a candidate. Apparently, right now I have a... Oh, it rose! I have a 2% chance to properly become <The World> if I try to activate this card." Eiro explained, "So I still have a long way in front of me. I think I need to be at the level of an A-Rank, if not S-Rank, Adventurer if I want to be able to safely become a Royal."
"...That's a joke, right..?" James asked, but Eiro simply shook his head, "It's not. I killed <The World> surprisingly easily, just because it was weakened that much. It had been sealed for the past 100 years, and it seemed to be a unique sort of monster, probably a Ghost-type, since it didn't have a physical form on its own. It took on parts of the world around it to become stronger, mainly by using the Key that I mentioned before. It would take others' abilities and fuse them into itself to get stronger. I managed to kill it before it got hte chance to gather up too much stuff."
Jess curiously looked at the Major Arcana Card that Eiro was holding, and then slowly nodded her head, "That's so interesting! So, part of <The World>'s abilities is to take things into itself?" Jess asked, and Eiro quickly nodded his head, "Yep." He said, and quickly pulled a small shadow magic stone out of his treasury, before infusing his hand with the shadow magic from it.
"Look here, usually, you would just have your skin be covered in it a little, right? But when I fuse with it now, it becomes like this." Eiro explained, and then pressed his shadow-fingers onto the table, making a good inch of them disappear before there was any sort of resistance.
Immediately, Jess jumped up and walked over to Eiro to get a closer look, "So that's why it looked so weird when you fused with Nature Magic!" She exclaimed, and Eiro simply shrugged, "Probably, yes. Either way, in addition to this, I can also now do this, as I've already shown you." The Demon explained, and had Nelli quickly fuse with him before soon pulling back out.
"So yeah. Any other questions?" Eiro asked with a smile on his face, and soon, Krog nodded his head, "Mhm. The Monster King... do you remember anything about him?" He inquired. Eiro leaned back in his chair and thought about it.
"Kind of? With my <Memory of a Scholar> Ability I can basically 'travel back' to the point when I was created." Eiro explained, "The thing is, when I see the Monster King, all I see is some kind of shadowy figure. I don't know if it's because I simply can't remember the Monster King, because of the fear implanted into me by him, or because that's what he looks like. I know that he's the child of a Goblin Lord and a Shadow Creature. They were both Royals, respectively either the holder of the <The Emperor> or <The Empress> Major Arcana Card. He became some sort of completely unique creature, so I have no idea what he could look like. Well, I'm sure it's not entirely what he's like, since he had to have some kind of limbs that Jura could make prosthetics for."
"Hm... It would be good if we could at least figure out what kind of creature the Monster King was to begin with..." James sighed annoyedly, and the Demon slowly turned his head toward Nelli, "Stop looking at me like that, I already told you I never met him." The Naiad sighed, and Eiro leaned back in his chair, "Right, right." 
And then, just as everyone in the group relaxed a little more and it became pretty quiet, Eiro's stomach cut through this silence with a loud grumble.
"Urgh... That's what I hate most about Evolutions..." The Demon sighed as he pushed himself off the chair, "I'll go see Rudy, he should be in the kitchen. You guys just keep looking for some requests." Eiro suggested as he scratched the back of his neck. Evolutions took up a lot of energy, and as such, Eiro quickly grew hungry while he was undergoing Evolution. Not to mention that he would have to bother with all that annoying as shit aching all over his body while it changed from the ground up.
Luckily, with the timing that he had for his evolution, he would get through it just before the Winter Solstice. He wouldn't want to be agitated and on edge because of it when meeting the Daughter of Winter.
"You really think that was a good idea?" Nelli asked with a nervous frown as she floated up right next to the Demon, and Gondos couldn't help but agree, "It was indeed a bit risky, was it not?" He added, but Eiro simply shrugged.
"Of course it was. But in the end, they aren't really a threat to me either way. They don't have any definite proof about anything, and I'm the one with better contacts in this situation. Not to mention that I could easily kill them if I wanted to, even if I would prefer if I didn't have to. If I can get them to trust me while they know everything there is to know about me, it's going to make it a lot easier to get along and fight alongside them." The Demon pointed out while he pushed his foot against the wall in front of him, and it simply flipped around and let Eiro into the hidden passage behind it, which the Demon used to get to the Kitchen in a straight path.
"But now, quiet. Let's not talk about this near Rudy." The Demon suggested. He stepped into the kitchen with a smile on his face and looked at Rudy, who was currently experimenting with a few of the ingredients Eiro bought for him. Right now, he was baking in the large oven. They never really had something at this size or quality before, so it was obvious that Rudy would want to try it out.
"Hey!" The boy exclaimed with a bright, excited smile, "Oh, look at this! This stove is so amazing! And that fireplace, and oven, not to mention all this equipment!" Rudy exclaimed, and Eiro slightly smiled.
"I'm glad you're happy about it. Just tell me if you need anything, I'll get whatever you want." Eiro pointed out, feeling happy because Rudy was feeling happy, and the Demon then just leaned against one of the counters in this big kitchen, while Rudy looked back at him. "Thanks, Dad!" Rudy exclaimed, and Eiro immediately raised his brows and crossed his arms with a light smirk.
"'Dad', huh?" Eiro asked, and Rudy just lightly scoffed, "So what? The mentor that King Skyhart introduced us to was teaching his son at the same time, so we kept hearing him say 'Dad, help me with this', and 'Dad, how do I do this' the whole time... And after Leon and Avalin came back, they kept speaking about what cool things you did, and you know that they call you 'Dad' and 'Daddy', so... Something wrong with that?" 
"Haha, of course not. I'm actually rather happy to hear you call me that. I knew that you guys thought of me as your father, but I never had any of you older four call me 'Dad' regularly." Eiro pointed out, "But now, Son, that's not why I'm here." Eiro said, genuinely still excited about being called 'Dad' by Rudy, "I could use a little bit of food. Doesn't need to be anything specific, just high-calory if possible. Sugar, fat, anything." Eiro pointed out, and Rudy stared back at him confusedly, before realizing why he wanted all of that.
"Ah, you're evolving right now?" He asked, "Why didn't you tell us beforehand? But well, you chose that Unique Option again anyway, right?" 
"Yup. So I don't know what's going to happen either way." Eiro pointed out.
Rudy slightly shrugged and opened his cookbook, ready to cook for the Demon next to him. 


"Bleh." - Imp

An Imp, a monster known to kill with a grin, a demon of the world, a creature of incredible might! Something that no force in the world can stand against! At least that's what the Main Character would like himself to be, the reality is very different, however.

Exactly that Imp stumbles along a path of unfortunate fortunes and grows through it, in a world that hates its very existence.

It grows more intelligent, more powerful, simply better at whatever it needs to do. Amongst other things, that includes raising children, killing Soldiers, and carving wooden figurines for money.

Abby ignored all of the political talk and focused on making sure Adam was eating his carrots. He really didn't like them. 
"If you finish all of them I'll give you some fruit snacks after," she whispered conspiratorially. Adam ate his carrots with gusto after that. 
Fruit snacks were one of the things she and Sia had worked on creating together. They weren't as sugary as the ones back home since they were made with real pureed fruits and vegetables but they were a novelty here, kind of like marshmallows because of the gelatin. 
One day Abby had desperately wanted a fruit-by-the-foot but they didn't exist here. They created a type of fruit leather that wasn't terribly similar to the highly processed taste she loved but it got her wondering what else they could make. Thus fruit snacks shaped like tiny circles were born. 
An entire project spanning the better part of two months began after that. Sia's family handled the bakery while she and Abby were holed up in the kitchen at her house trying to recreate things from memory and limited knowledge. 
She did this because she missed foods from home, not expecting anything else to come of it. The cookbook had been a surprise but it also brought a lot more money into the village that allowed them to build the inn faster than they would have otherwise. The props and costumes at the theater became slightly better too. 
The Kanta were doing very well for themselves considering there were only about two hundred adults and teenagers between the two villages. Everyone else was too young to contribute much to the economy or infrastructure. 
But that was why Abby had founded the school; she wanted those kids to have more tools to help them help their homeland when they got a bit older. The first of those children had already "graduated" and moved to the workforce when classes ended for the summer. 
There were about four of them and they had already proved to be fairly innovative at their apprenticeships. 
One worked at the printing office and wanted to write a novel for older children in addition to making picture books. Another worked under a stonemason and had already worked together with his mentor to discover a more efficient way to use this world's version of cement. 
All in all, she considered the limited education she was able to offer the Kanta children a success. She wanted to tell Blaise about it but wasn't sure how long he would be stuck in his camp. With any luck it would only be a few days.

Blaise and the other Warriors hadn't been allowed to leave the camp for two weeks and he was seriously considering sneaking out to meet Abby and simply accepting the punishment at this point. She was so close yet felt even further away than she had when he was in Shibatsu. 
Training began a few days after they arrived once there was time to set up a schedule. 
This year they would go through basic training for the men of Ilmir and next summer they would move their camp close to Raisha to do the same thing. The last year of their mission would involve more specialized training, splitting the time between each village. 
Alamar and Carrick hoped that by the time they finished up here there would be enough young men coming of age to begin specific military apprenticeships. Those who had already been through the program could mentor them and the Kanta military would slowly be able to build up from there. 
By the time King Franz no longer sat on the throne (he was still young and healthy, barring any unforeseen accidents), the Kanta would no longer need the promise of his troops protecting their borders from invaders. That was the plan anyway. 
Every day, thirty to forty males from ages twelve to forty-five came in one of three rotating shifts so they could still get their other jobs done. All of the adolescents came in the first group of the day and Blaise wondered why that was.
When he asked, the boy who had been talking to Abby the day they arrived looked at him like he was stupid. "Because we don't want to miss play practice. Almost all of us have rehearsals right after lunch and still have work to do before and after it."
Play practice? Was that what she had been doing on that stage with all of those children? 
It appeared that she had been quite busy while he was gone. She had gone from a stranger to someone highly respected in the clan. Lian wasn't the only one who thought the world of Abby. He frequently heard other boys whispering about her when the thought the commander couldn't hear them. 
"I wish Abby could see this; she would be so proud of us."
"Maybe we could use what we learn here in one of our plays! Do you think she would like that?"
"I wish I had known how to use a sword for real while doing Lord of the Rings. I was Aragorn and I had no idea what I was doing waving that stick around."
"When we get out of here let's stop by the bakery. We can bring Abby those doughnuts she likes so much and tell her all about it."
These boys obviously spent a lot of time with her and thought the world of her for it. Blaise really shouldn't have been jealous because some of them were ten years younger than she was but not all of them. There were at least a handful of sixteen to eighteen year olds who could feasibly be considered suitors even though she was now twenty-four. 
Men married women that many years younger than them all the time. It wasn't completely unheard of for the reverse to happen as well though it was much less common.

"I thought of a recipe, but forgot how it goes. Can I get outside help?" Jiang Haifu opened his mouth blankly.
"Brother Haifu, do as you please." Old Man Wang smiled faintly. "I also invited this cooking cat as external help. Brother Haifu, if you've forgotten the recipe, feel free to look it up. When we get older, we tend to forget things."
When Old Man Wang said this, Jiang Haifu's face burned. For a chef to forget his recipe was actually a disgrace… Most importantly, Jiang Haifu didn't write A Record of Divine Cuisine himself. In fact, the fish skin noodles dish he was cooking today also wasn't his idea, and was from the cookbook A Record of Divine Cuisine.
Jiang Haifu was a person who very much cared about winning. He thought he could win this competition beautifully, but Old Man Wang's two mind-blowing operations one after another had directly stupefied him into forgetting his own recipe!

Old Man Wang recalled, "You must have source material when you write! You can't write a story without it! Then I started making up recipes, and planned to use them as source material for a novel. I ended up creating more and more recipes."

Chapter 171 - The History Of Bread

It took 12 bamboo pipes of 61 feet long to complete 3 farmlands and in that half day's work, the 6 of us had managed to finally complete it.

It was a fine achievement even though most of the time we spent chatting up since it had been so long since we had gathered together and worked as a team.

 It sure brings back a lot of memories when the first time they build the house for the Levis and the children first. It was a cruck house but they build a better one for me. 

In the end, after we had made the thatched houses, only then Crystal pleaded to have their houses upgraded. Now, the pioneers were practically living under one roof with us as a sign of appreciation.

We stopped just before dinner and walked over to the bamboo throne to set some of the records that I had made regarding the 'Mist Sprayer' from the ground up using the bamboo pipes.

I went over to old Kayla and helped her to stack some firewood from the woodcutter's area using a handcart and pushed it to the fireplace. 

Some of the new citizens were watching in surprise as they witnessed their Lord doing menial work rather than getting someone to do it. Ah well, old habits are hard to die.

Old Kayla approached me and informed, "Those stricken ladies are more cheery today then the rest of the days. It seemed that they had overcome their ordeal and also had helped around abit."

"Since they are still recuperating from the sudden blood loss, these blood curds really helped them a lot in their recovery process. Right now even though they had helped around but I advised them to take a rest once they felt light-headed."

"It's the start of summer and they need to get used to being exposed to the elements here as a settler. Normally for them, they would look for cooler climates."

Old Kayla updated me as I nodded apprehensively. Although I don't know much about women's 'stuff' but old Kayla did let me know a thing or two for my general knowledge.

Furthermore, sex education and biology was not a common knowledge one would possess, especially in the medieval 15th century...!

As I was seated at the bamboo throne with Heather at my sides, we were discussing the rest of the of her Gracehaven's Mighty Cookbook And Baking Recipe Book and I watched her add the types of bread cake that contained fresh banana, pitted prunes, raisins and walnuts.

This list includes the English muffins that were filed with various fruit jam, peanut butter, green and red beans fillings.

In fact, it was quite similar to the other bread that had fillings that were contracted to send to the 5 towns. The only difference is the shape where it would be baked in a muffin baking tray and the only availability of those trays was from bakeries.

After we had completed writing about these, a thought suddenly flashed by in my mind and I was stupified in why this question didn't enter my mind before...! 

"Heather, dear... The four towns that we supply the bread to are cities right? Let's ask Eagle. He seemed to be a well-travelled person." I asked Heather but she too doesn't have the answers and we soon summoned for Eagle. 

"Excuse me Eagle, you seemed to be a very well-travelled person. May we ask you some serious questions, maybe you could answer them or maybe the others knew about it." I started asking Eagle the questions the sparked my interest suddenly. 

"Scarborough, Flamborough, Barmston and Beverley... Those are not settlement and villages, right? Furthermore, with the number of bread they order, those are considered as towns or cities, am I right?" 

Heather stopped writing since my look was quite serious as I asked Eagle that questions. 

"Yes, my Lord. Those are cities and there are castles in Scarborough, Flamborough and Barmston while Beverley has a town centre instead."

"There are about 2,000 or more citizens in Scarborough, about 900 in Flamborough as it is considered as a small fishing town, there are about 800 citizens in Barmston or previously known as Winchetone while it's about 5,000 citizens in Beverley where it is famous for its brick, tile, leather and cloth industry."

"What else do you wish to know, my Lord?" Eagle eyed me as I placed my elbow on the table and used my hand to support my chin as I pondered on what to ask since I had never been to these places before. 

"Wow...! You seemed to impressed me much...! One major question... Why do these cities and town require Gracehaven to supply bread to them? Is there something special about our bread or maybe the price is cheaper than anywhere else? Or simply because Gracehaven Bread is 'good enough to eat on its own!'?"

"Let me begin by telling you about the humble story of bread, which people had exploited throughout the years due to their gullible behaviour and greed." 

Eagle started his lecture and the rest of the pioneers assembled, including old Kayla except for old Jack who was still tinkering in his shop. 

"The Assize of Bread was created in the 13th century. These laws set up price controls for bakers, which would allow someone to buy at least some quantity of bread for a copper."

"Every year at least the size of this bread would be set according to the price of wheat and other grains — if the grain supply was expensive, your copper would only get you a small amount of bread; if the grain was plentiful than the size of the loaf would increase."

"This system had been set for the last 200 years, although bakers occasionally tried to cheat by selling bread that did not meet regulations."

"In fourteenth-century London, for example, bakers were caught selling bread that had been mixed with dirt or chalk or even had an iron-bar inserted into it to make it weigh more."

Eagle closed his findings and we all looked wide-eyed at him and never believed that some people would go to the extent of cheating the public in selling bread in that manner...! 

Also, the knowledgeable Eagle also known as Bishop Levingstone had never failed to astonish us with facts of historical events as he relived the moment as a lecturer he used to be when he was in York University.

"So, right now those 4 towns do not have a bakery, am I right to say this and thus they engage our services to produce bread through Corral as its main distributor then?"

I asked as summed up what Eagle had informed us to make things easier to digest. No wonder he was the leader for the Shadow's members stationed here in Gracehaven. 

Furthermore couples with his experiences and vast knowledge, at least he was able to deduce accurately the needs of these cities and towns.

"The three towns — Scarborough, Flamborough and Barmston do have a bakery, but it is no more functioning when it was closed some months back. This was due to the ill practises those bakers did that made the reputation of bakers from other towns and cities to shambles."

"I see... Hmm, in that case, do you think that equipment from the bakery could be bought for our use? I mean we are looking for square baking tins that measured 8 inches and 3 inches deep, am I right, Heather?" 

Heather looked at me and quickly turned her Gracehaven's Mighty Cookbook And Baking Recipe Book and found the specifications of the square baking tin that Jennings had mentioned to her last night. 

"Yes. Yes. Square baking tin 8 inches and 3 inches deep. Our oven could bake 16 of those tins per level and each baking tin could bake 9 bread per set. Each set can be sold for 27 coppers and our oven can bake 32 of those baking tins for every ⅓ hour." 

Heather was excited to relate the bread set that Jennings would like to introduce later for the towns of possible. "Furthermore since it came in a set of 9 pieces, it weighs about 22 ounces and 3 pounds of bread makes 24 of those buns," she added. 

"Well, I can try to send a message to Marcel to send a message to the buyers of his to look out for the baking tins. What else do you want to ask from Marcel?" Eagle added as he takes out his notepad and scrawl on it to take note of the requirements. 

"Well, according to Jennings, we may require 320 of such baking tins and 320 muffin trays of the same size too. I'm not sure if the cities operate the ovens just like us. And we would like to order 250 pounds of green beans and 250 pounds of red beans. And 250 pounds of tapioca flour too plus some food colouring." I rattled off to Eagle who took the notes down and once we are done, he tore it off and asked someone from Shadow to send the note to Marcel immediately. 

Realising the carrier pigeon normally roost when it's dark, Eagle noted that there's at least over 1½ hour before dark and this note would be able to be sent to Corral immediately. 

Hearing the red and green beans as well as the tapioca flour being ordered, Heather was all bouncy on the bamboo throne and her bouncy makes it's more jiggly and I have to clear my throat several times due to it. Heather was ecstatic as she bounded and hugged me tightly.

Well, one thing for sure, the citizens might be enjoying a new dish pretty soon and it's going to be the rainbow coloured layered steam pudding...! 

Heather was so thankful to me since she wanted to taste it so bad after hearing about it from Jennings and old Kayla. Well, I knew what Heather wants and all I could do was to give her what she wanted most. 

It's the thought that counts and old Kayla smiled at me with her sparkly eyes. She knew after all that I was also a sensitive person and caters not to personal needs but to others as well. 

The addition of the trays means that there would be more addition to the variety of bread for the citizens to enjoy especially during winter. I had never been this far during winter and wonder how it would be like — would it snow, rain or sleet in these parts of England. 

Well, only time could tell when winter season arrives in mid-September. I hope that the season would be snowy, at least its a different kind of wetness that doesn't make the ground too soggy.
