The Chaos Unleashed
In the dark of the night, it was nearly impossible to discern the number of people around. Even with the confusion of the soldiers, identifying every individual was a challenge. Lott and his group moved through the enemy ranks like shadows among a pack of hounds, avoiding detection as they followed the feint attackers back to their camp.
When the leader of the enemy team finally used a light to assess his numbers, he was initially pleased to count five hundred soldiers returning, despite having sent out only four hundred. His satisfaction was short-lived as he realized there were a hundred more soldiers than expected. Before he could react further, Altria, disguised as a soldier, swiftly dealt with him. "Your leader has been killed by me," she announced to the other soldiers, her tone cold and decisive.
Lott observed the scene with a smirk, noting, "At this point, I should say, 'I'm sorry, go and undress him!' to add more scope." With that, he drew his sword and began attacking the surrounding Vortigern soldiers. "Come on, kill them all!" he commanded, though he gestured to his men to leave half of the enemy soldiers to escape.
Although Lott had only brought a hundred knights with him, they were seasoned and formidable. The difference in combat ability between his knights and the ordinary soldiers was immense. Lott, Tristan, and Altria cut through the enemy ranks with ease, turning the battle into a one-sided affair. The soldiers who survived the initial onslaught fled in panic, spreading chaos throughout the camp.
The confusion quickly spread from camp to camp. Soldiers, terrified and disoriented, fled in all directions, causing widespread panic. The chaos was so severe that it was akin to a "bombing camp," a term used to describe the complete disarray that follows a successful night raid. This type of chaos was known to be highly effective in large-scale operations, much like the historical examples from different eras.
Seeing the disarray, Lott ordered Altria and the others to withdraw. Altria, initially taken aback by the effectiveness of their disruption, quickly led the Knights of the Round Table in retreat. The Vortigern forces were left to deal with the aftermath of the chaos, as Lott and his knights made their escape.
Meanwhile, Vortigern and King Marko, both heavily intoxicated, were jolted awake by the commotion. Vortigern, alarmed by the chaos, demanded, "What's happening? Go out and check."
A subordinate rushed outside and quickly returned, breathless. "Your Majesty, I'm not sure what's going on. Many soldiers are saying that Camelot's army is attacking us, and we are about to be defeated."
"That's impossible!" Vortigern exclaimed, incredulous. "Camelot's forces couldn't have arrived so quickly."
Determined to address the situation, Vortigern and his men rushed out. He assessed the chaos and immediately took charge. "Follow me, and anyone who causes further disorder will be executed on the spot," he ordered, displaying a ruthless edge.
Vortigern's decisive actions and superior strength began to restore order. He eliminated those who were contributing to the chaos, his ruthless efficiency quickly quelling the unrest. The sight of his brutal enforcement brought the remaining soldiers back to their senses, effectively ending the chaotic state.
By the time Lott returned to the castle, he could still hear the distant echoes of the chaos. He looked on with a sense of satisfaction, noting, "If Vortigern could resolve the chaos so easily, I'd be disappointed."
He then turned to Altria. "Let's head back, have a meal, and rest. We've earned it," he said.
"Good!" Altria responded with renewed energy at the prospect of a meal. The Knights of the Round Table prepared to eat and rest, celebrating their victory. Despite knowing that future battles would be challenging, they felt a sense of accomplishment for this victory and were relieved to have suffered no casualties.
In stark contrast to Lott's satisfaction, Vortigern was left fuming. Although he managed to restore order, the losses were significant. "Check how many we've lost!" he demanded.
The casualty report soon arrived, revealing nearly three thousand deaths. Lott's forces were responsible for only about two hundred of these losses; the majority were either killed in the chaos, by each other, or by Vortigern himself. The massive losses were a blow to Vortigern and King Marko, who were both shocked and enraged by the effective execution of Lott's strategy.
As Vortigern and King Marko processed the devastation, their anger and frustration were palpable. The night raid had severely impacted their forces, and they were left to contemplate their next moves amidst the ruins of their once orderly camp.
