章 62: Chapter 62: Unexpected Developments

Jack increased the car's speed to 120 kilometers per hour. In his previous life, he had watched many PIT maneuver videos of American police on Bilibili, with the Arkansas State Police series being the most thrilling. However, it wasn't as enjoyable when he was the one involved.

This wasn't just about flipping the other car; if they caused a virus spill, they couldn't exactly treat everyone there on the spot.

Fortunately, the driver on the other side wasn't a seasoned veteran and showed no signs of defensive driving. The small road leading to the airport was in poor condition, making it difficult to maintain high speed. The suspect's car had been going around 80 to 90 kilometers per hour.

Possibly because the airport had been locked down, the traffic on this shabby road was becoming sparse. Jack felt the timing was right. Seeing that the patrol car's front was now parallel with the rear of the blue BMW, he lightly nudged the steering wheel to the right, hitting the left rear wheel of the BMW.

The blue BMW immediately lost control, its front veering left, but the rear half was pinned by Jack's car, skidding uncontrollably to the right. The driver, in a panic, reflexively slammed on the brakes, causing the tires to screech against the ground, leaving long skid marks before stopping sideways about five meters from the intersection traffic light.

As soon as Jack executed the PIT maneuver, he slammed on the brakes, creating a distance of about ten meters from the now out-of-control BMW. The fact that the suspects hadn't fired during the chase didn't mean they weren't armed with automatic weapons. After all, terrorists were not street thieves; it made sense for them to have prepared automatic weapons for a planned attack.

True to Murphy's Law, as Jack and Angela stepped out of their car and took cover behind the reinforced front doors to issue a warning, an AR-556 protruded from the driver's window of the BMW and began spraying bullets in their direction.

The passenger also emerged, carrying a bag with the virus, armed with a Scorpion submachine gun, and started firing at John's patrol car, forcing it to stop.

In an instant, the empty street turned into a battlefield with bullets flying everywhere. Jack and Angela, armed only with handguns, didn't trust the supposedly bulletproof doors to withstand rifle fire and scrambled to the rear of the car, where Wesley had already taken cover.

"I think we need to install a gun rack between the seats."

Jack, irritated, opened the trunk, and while keeping his head down, retrieved an AR-15 and two magazines, tossing them to Angela.

Angela, inserting ceramic plates into her bulletproof vest, took the rifle and, once both were ready, they simultaneously closed the trunk lid and began taking turns firing, forcing the terrorists to take cover behind their car's engine block.

Wesley, caught between them, yelped as hot shell casings from the AR-15s burned him, prompting an annoyed Angela to yank him behind her.

Soon, John and Nyra also retrieved their rifles, shifting the balance of power. More patrol cars from the Wilshire Division arrived, signaling the end for the two terrorists.

Then, a highly improbable and unfortunate event occurred: a bus turned left at the intersection, driven by an oblivious driver who was nodding along to music. By the time he noticed the situation, it was too late; the bus stopped right behind the BMW.

"Cease fire, cease fire!"

Even before Sergeant Gray ordered it, all officers had already stopped shooting. The bus was now parked in the line of fire, with the two terrorists directly behind it.

The passengers on the bus looked on in terror, just twenty meters away, as dozens of Wilshire Division officers pointed their rifles at them.

"Dammit!"

Jack muttered as he inserted a fresh magazine. He had planned to try a headshot using the reflex sight, but the terrorists, realizing the police's hesitation, reloaded their weapons. The AR-556 started firing again.

All the police could do was watch as one terrorist, threatening the bus driver with a gun, forced him to open the door and jumped onto the bus.

The other terrorist, after emptying his magazine, dropped the AR-556, pulled out a handgun, fired a few more shots, and then fled around the corner.

"This is bad."

Jack muttered, reopening the trunk to retrieve two towels, soaking them in bottled water, and tossing one to Angela.

To others, it might seem like psychological comfort, but if they did get exposed, they could claim that these towels were what saved them, leaving the CDC to decide whether to believe it or not.

"I'll draw their attention. You find a chance to take a shot. Make sure it's a kill."

Jack whispered to Angela, confident in her marksmanship.

"Angela, it's too dangerous."

Wesley, who had been sheltered by his girlfriend, expressed his concern.

Angela looked conflicted. A regular officer might hesitate, especially for a job paying less than ten grand a month. But she, being part of the main team, had a stronger sense of responsibility and was soon to become a detective. With Jack, a rookie, charging ahead, she couldn't abandon him.

"Duty calls." She snapped at her boyfriend and followed Jack.

Jack wasn't too worried. The Scorpion submachine gun the terrorist had probably had few rounds left, and the 7.65mm rounds weren't particularly powerful. The way the terrorist had been shooting wildly, it was more likely to injure passengers by accident.

With ceramic plates in his vest, Jack could take a few hits as long as they weren't headshots.

With this in mind, Jack slung the AR-15 over his back, pulled out his Glock, checked the magazine, and cautiously boarded the bus.

Meanwhile, some officers from the Wilshire Division followed John and Nyra in pursuit of the other terrorist on foot, while others surrounded the bus.

Angela suddenly remembered something, motioned for Jack to stop, and ran to Sergeant Gray to whisper something. The sergeant nodded in understanding.

When Angela returned, Jack resumed his approach. Peeking over the steps, the terrorist fired a few rounds toward the front of the bus, emptying his magazine with a clicking sound.

Taking advantage of the terrorist's distraction, Jack and Angela prepared for their next move, hoping to resolve the situation quickly and safely.
