Nicholas thought of the memory. “I spent the night alone in the camp that day. My tent was empty as no one was left alive. I could not sleep that night., for I buried them with my hand.”

Rosa smiled, looking at him. Nicholas must have been very young on his first battle. He must have been terrified.

“The first experience is always something like that. I was sleeping for the first time. So, I did not have a memory as such.” Nicholas turned to look at her.

He forgot for a moment that she was someone who spent her years in war as well.

“But mine was not the war. It was an ambush.” She pointed to the scar.

“I fainted and woke up to feel invisible. It felt like I am a monster sucking out the lives of people before me.”

“The first is always the hardest.” Nicholas sat forward.

“It is never easy, but it becomes easier when we keep going.” He tried to console himself and his sister at the same time.
