In a dimly lit hotel room, Morishita's expression was serious as he listened to Reiki and Asuma recount their encounter with Beisuke.
"This is your conclusion after making contact?" Morishita asked, disappointment etched on his face. While he trusted the authenticity of the information, thanks to Reiki's unique bloodline ability that could confirm Beisuke's memories, he knew this was not within their current mission scope.
Reiki nodded, a small smile on his face. "Sir Morishita, this was a pursuit contact. I followed your instructions. Isn't the intelligence we brought back enough?"
Morishita's eyes widened slightly as he realized Reiki had done exactly what was asked of him—pursue contact and gather information.
"The contact phase is meant to offer these ninjas a final chance to return, especially if their reasons for defecting were not of fundamental disloyalty," Reiki continued. "It's up to the village to decide whether to accept them back."
"There is sufficient information and a clear argument now. Leave the rest to us. You and Asuma should rest. We'll be back soon," Morishita said before vanishing, with Hyuga Oyo following suit.
Reiki sighed as Asuma looked at him, eyes wide and confused. "Reiki, why can't we help him? Beisuke isn't a villain. It was those Shimura clan ninjas who used him as a pawn!"
"You're not wrong, Asuma. But what if we find out that Kishichi, the other target, has a similar story tied to the Sarutobi clan? How would you respond then?" Reiki challenged.
Asuma's face tightened with determination. "If he was wronged, then we should stand by the truth. The Sarutobi clan should lead by example."
Reiki nodded, a mix of sadness and admiration in his eyes. "That's noble, Asuma. But things don't always work out as they should. For now, let's do what we can. I'm heading out for a while."
"To do what?" Asuma asked, bewildered. "Set up a stall?"
"Exactly," Reiki said, grabbing a basket as he left. Asuma, still confused, followed him.
…
"Your injury is a simple sprain. I'll treat it now."
"You almost cut your fingers while cooking? Be more careful."
"Gambling is fine, but don't bet your life. Your arm is broken; let me fix that."
Reiki worked tirelessly, treating minor injuries for villagers in exchange for modest fees. Asuma stood beside him, holding a sign that read:
**[Treatment Fee: 1,000 yen]**
By late afternoon, Morishita and Hyuga Oyo returned alone, with no sign of Beisuke.
"Did you finish the mission?" Asuma asked, eyes full of worry.
"Yes, it's done," Morishita replied evenly. "Beisuke refused to return and took his own life."
"No… How could this happen?" Asuma's voice cracked with disbelief.
"He didn't want to return to a village that had failed him," Hyuga said somberly. "It wasn't us. He chose to end it on his terms."
Asuma's shoulders slumped as reality set in. The implications of Beisuke's death were heavy. Returning to Konoha meant facing the manipulations of Danzo and the power struggles within. Perhaps Beisuke had chosen the only freedom left to him.
"Let's go," Morishita said, breaking the silence. "We have another target. Let's finish this mission and move on."
As the team departed, Reiki lingered behind for a moment, eyes scanning the horizon. He had one more task to complete.
…
Night fell, and Reiki found himself at an abandoned hut on the outskirts of the village. Kneeling beside a lifeless body, he whispered, "All hands."
His palms glowed with healing chakra as he channeled energy into the body, which soon stirred and gasped for air. Beisuke opened his eyes, shocked but alive.
"Thank you," Beisuke whispered, sitting up with effort. "Why are you helping me, Reiki?"
Reiki's eyes met Beisuke's, unwavering. "No reason beyond my own will. Don't give up on being a ninja, Beisuke. One day, you might grow stronger and return home."
Beisuke's breath caught in his throat as he watched Reiki slip out of the room. Those words felt too mature, too resolute, for someone so young.
Suddenly, rustling outside shattered the silence. Beisuke's heart raced as he recognized the voices—members of the Root organization. They were hunting.
"Reiki's actions might be discovered," Beisuke thought, grabbing his hat and preparing to intercept.
"Boom!"
A figure appeared in his path, blocking his way.
"No need to follow. I know where he's going. Take another route," said a small, determined voice.
Beisuke's eyes widened. "Who are you? What's your connection to Reiki?"
Before him stood a child—no older than Reiki, yet emanating an air of authority. Beisuke hesitated, the shock of this unexpected protector adding to his confusion.
Whoever this child was, he had just made a choice that could change everything.
