Bab 29: Kannabi Bridge (4)

After traveling for a while, Minato's team finally found a good hidden spot suitable for a camp. Once Minato set up a few seals around the perimeter, he allowed Obito to light a fire. Yami sat next to the fire, lost in deep thought.

"This is troublesome..." he muttered. He never expected that the current Minato team would be this incompetent. The reckless young Kakashi, Obito who had almost no experience in life-and-death combat, and a weak female medical ninja... Once Minato left, Yami worried he might soon be the only one left alive in the team. "According to the original ending, only Obito died... but now it feels like the whole team is going to be wiped out."

Just as he was lost in thought, a sudden voice snapped him back to reality. "Here, take this." Looking up, Yami saw Rin offering dried meat and water.

"Thanks." Yami took the food from Rin and ate it immediately, feeling the hunger from their journey.

Rin didn't immediately leave. Instead, she sat beside him, looking at the fire. "Hey, why did Yami-kun fail in the Ninja School?" It seemed that she was too bored staring at the fire and couldn't fall asleep, so she started talking to him out of curiosity.

"I simply failed the test," Yami said after finishing the food and glancing up at the darkening sky.

"But you should be pretty good, right?" Rin asked, unconvinced. Whether it was the battle in the Chunin Exam or his casual rescue of her today, they clearly showed that the boy in front of her, a few years older than her, was a powerful ninja. How could such a ninja have failed in the ninja school? He must have his own secrets, she thought.

"That's the truth, there's no other reason," Yami replied casually with a shrug. He couldn't exactly tell her that it wasn't truly him who failed and that he replaced the original Yami just a year ago. Whether out of boredom or gratitude for rescuing her, Rin continued chatting with him. Their conversation mainly consisted of Rin asking several questions, trying to pry into his life, while Yami answered vaguely to avoid revealing too much. Knowing her future, Yami didn't really want to get involved with her unless necessary.

'Is this guy also the type like Kakashi who doesn't like to talk much?' Rin concluded after the brief conversation with Yami. Although Rin was not satisfied with Yami's perfunctory answers, she did not ask any further questions.

In the middle of the night, Yami was abruptly awakened by a slight sound of talking. Grabbing the kunai beside him, Yami warily looked in the direction of the voice and found that the people whispering were Minato and Obito. He relaxed a little.

"Sorry, I seem to have disturbed your conversation," he said, rubbing his eyes and planning to sit somewhere farther away and wait for dawn.

"No, we are the ones who should apologize. Did we disturb you?" Minato asked. Inwardly, he was impressed by Yami's sensitivity to such a small disturbance and began to understand why the Hokage had arranged for Yami to be part of Kakashi's team.

"However, since you are awake, you should also come here and listen. After all, you are all Kakashi's companions. Understanding each other will help improve teamwork," Minato said.

"But I..." Yami could guess what Minato wanted to talk about, and he had no interest in listening to Kakashi's life story as he already knew it better than anyone here. Besides, he wasn't Kakashi's companion, merely teaming up with them for this mission.

"After this mission, I plan to invite you to join our team. As for whether you want to accept my invitation, I hope you can think about it carefully after this mission is over," Minato said, delivering shocking news.

"Sensei..." Obito's eyes widened in surprise. He never thought there would be another person added to their team.

Join Minato's team? At first glance, the offer seemed good to Yami, especially since being in Minato's team would undoubtedly make him closer to Kushina. But thinking about the fate awaiting this accursed team, Yami didn't want to be any part of it.

"Okay, Obito, now listen carefully. Although I don't want to tell you this private matter, it is indeed necessary to explain to you about Kakashi..." While Yami was lost in thought, Minato began to tell the life story of Kakashi's father, Konoha White Fang Hatake Sakumo. It was a story about a man who gave up his mission to protect his companions, resulting in great losses to the village. He was verbally slandered by the villagers and eventually chose to commit suicide.

The last straw for Sakumo was the accusations from the very companions he rescued and brought back to the village. Slandered by the people in the village and betrayed by his cherished companions, Sakumo couldn't hold on any longer and eventually committed suicide at home. The first person to discover his suicide was his son, Kakashi.

"Since then, Kakashi has been very obsessed with the rules and restrictions of ninjas, and never talked about his father to anyone again."

"Kakashi... I see..." Obito was deeply shocked when he heard the last part and began to feel sorry for Kakashi's experience. But soon, his expression changed before he slowly glanced at Yami. If he remembered correctly, wasn't Yami's situation the same as Kakashi's father?

"Why do you keep staring at me like that?" noticing Obito's gaze, Yami turned his attention to him.

"I..." Obito didn't know what to say. He wasn't close to Yami to advise him, but he still wanted to prevent Yami from following Sakumo's path. Just as Obito opened his mouth, Yami cut him off.

"You're giving me the creeps with that stare of yours." Looking at the subtle smug look on Yami's face, Obito gritted his teeth. All his previous pity toward Yami vanished, replaced with irritation.

"You jerk..." Ignoring him, Yami headed toward his place to rest until his shift arrived. As for what Obito wanted to say, he was already aware of it. But he had no concern for it. He wasn't as weak-hearted as Sakumo. Even if the whole Konoha was wiped out tomorrow, he would only think it was a pity and continue pursuing his goals. That was why he always limited his interactions with people, especially those whose fates he knew. He didn't want unnecessary emotions to affect his judgment and cause his death.

The driving cause of every major antagonist in Naruto was driven by emotions and not calm, calculated logic. And he refused to be a slave to his emotions like the rest of this world's residents.
