"I would never let go of you," Simon answered quickly like it was instinct, and I felt pathetic that I'd needed him to reassure me of that. But then he spoke again and filled my heart with mud. "It just doesn't feel right to leave so many people to fend for themselves."
"They aren't fending for themselves. I told them where to go. Where it is safe for them."
"But who will guide them there?"
"Would you like to rule in my place then?" I snapped. "Should I hand you a sword so you can battle my father for the crown? Maybe that way, you can ensure every being receives not even a scratch on them during this war. Or maybe you'd prefer to risk your life guiding people to safety in an active war zone despite having someone important waiting for you to return to them."
