A worried husband, an anxious doctor, and a bystander are currently looking at a woman lying in bed. Her once rosy complexion has suddenly turned ashen as if all the blood in her body was drained. Once in a while, she would groan in pain as her body would be attacked by immense pain that she wanted to give up already in life.
Luckily the two doctors were quick to move and immediately applied pain reliever to at least ease the pain she is currently feeling. But it seems that it is still not enough to dull the severe pain she is currently experiencing.
"Doctor… where is he? Can you… can you call him, please…" Mister Lim said with a pleading tone as his eyes are already filled with tears.
He could not dare watch the suffering of his wife. Right now, if only he can share this burden with her he would. If only he is the one in pain, he would gladly sacrifice himself just to see his wife smile again.
But this hopelessness is making him feel powerless and useless as a husband.
In this tense moment, a sudden knocking was heard from the door.
"Excuse me…" a nurse suddenly peek inside the room.
"Doctor Gale… someone is… someone is causing trouble at the hospital gate. And he is looking for you. The guards won't let him in because it's already non-visiting hours of the hospital." The nurse explained.
When the people inside the room heard this, they were all dumbstruck. They have forgotten one important thing due to their anxiousness. Even the lady doctor on the side also realized something.
But before they could do anything, the door swung open and a figure darted inside.
The nurse was stunned upon seeing the young man who suddenly appears beside her.
"You… how dare you enter this place without permission!" the nurse said in a panic.
But before she can do anything, the young man just strode towards the woman groaning in the hospital bed. He didn't think twice as he suddenly removes the IV fluid and then changes it into something he took from his backpack.
His quick action made everyone dumbfounded. And just watch him. However, the nurse was the first one to react and suddenly shouted.
"Wait! Don't do that!" but she was stopped by Doctor Gale who is standing on the side.
"Doctor…"
"Shhh!!! Just watch…" Doctor Gale said with confidence in his eyes.
Even the husband who is sitting closer to the young man just watches what he was doing.
Curt heaves a sigh of relief after setting up everything. Then he suddenly took out a couple of needles he has already prepared and quickly inserted them on the woman's acupoints to numb her body of the pain. After he removes the IV fluid he knew that the painkiller inside it would not work anymore, hence he needed to numb the pain she is feeling and wait before the concoction would effect.
After a few minutes have passed, everyone can see the woman's complexion slowly becoming better. And her face that seems to be feeling pain has already calmed down.
Upon seeing this, Curt immediately removed the needles he has used and threw them to the trash can.
Then he suddenly walked to the side and slump himself on the chair.
He has worked himself tirelessly to make the first batch of the concoction for the woman's illness. In fact, he has already made all the necessary concoction. The first batch that he made was purposely to replace the current IV bottle.
However, the consecutive ones are already in a vial form. One can just use it by injecting it directly to the IV drip of the patient.
The room was silent as the people watch the woman on the bed slowly open her eyes.
"Honey… Honey…" Mister Lim cried out as he held his wife's hands.
"How are you feeling?" he added.
Nancy Lim just gave him a gentle smile as their eyes met.
One can see the love between the two and their feelings for each other in this simple exchange.
"Missis Lim, are you still feeling the pain?"
Nancy Lim suddenly gestures for them to give her a basin to throw up. And when she got hold of the metal basin, she immediately throws up a mouthful of black foul blood. This happened twice, which made the people in the room feel a bit tensed.
"Don't worry, she needs to throw up those filthy things." A slurring voice said and then followed by a snoring sound.
Everyone looks at the young man already asleep on the chair.
Doctor Gale showed a faint smile on his face upon seeing this. He then walked towards Curt and took an unused blanket on the side and draped it on Curt's body.
Then the lady doctor dragged Doctor Gale outside of the room.
When the two are outside, she looks at the smiling man.
"This is amazing... if what this kid has discovered is a cure, then that would be something that we need to disclose to the public." She whispered in a low voice.
"Oh, come on Agnes… as if you didn't know the politics in our profession. If we disclose this in public it would cause huge turmoil. And someone from the higher-ups would just hug this credit and use that boy. I for one would not permit this to happen. I became a doctor to heal the sick. I hate those politics…" Doctor Gale said.
"Then, what should we do with this?" the lady doctor named Agnes asked.
"Well, I was thinking… what if… what if the both of us and the young man put up a clinic just for these kinds of special cases. We can help people this way, right?"
"Wouldn't others call us selfish by doing this?"
"Well, I'd rather be called selfish than exposing that young man to those vipers…" doctor Gale said.
"Why not let him decide on this. If he agrees then the three of us can partner. I have my own connections at least that way, we can protect him…"
"Okay, let's talk about this tomorrow when he wakes up."
The two ended their discussion and enters the room. The nurse also came out and was instructed to keep her silence by Doctor Agnes. When she was told by the lady doctor of this, the nurse seems to have a pale complexion.
This is because, in the provincial hospital, Doctor Agnes has a reputation of being a tyrant.
And so the night goes by and the new day comes.
Curt Nilfiem slowly opens his eyes and stretches his hands in the air. He felt like this was the longest sleep he ever had in his life.
Then he found himself sitting on the chair while looking at the smiling woman sitting on the hospital's bed.
"Good morning Doctor… How was your sleep?" Nancy Lim asked with a gentle smile on her face.
When Curt saw her complexion already fine, he suddenly jumps up from the chair and immediately walked to her side and feels her pulse.
"Ah… this is awesome… Haha… this is really awesome!" Curt said with jubilation.
In fact, he is not sure of the medicine would work on her. But after checking and counter-checking the medicine's effect, he knew that it would react with her body. The medicine he created was not a universal medicine that can cure all cancer. In fact, this particular medicine would only work on Nancy Lim and those with the same physique, ailment, and condition.
As for others, he is not sure.
And so with these findings, Curt is already happy. However, there are still a couple of weeks before the cancer cells in her body would be stabilized and controlled. Hence he did not celebrate that much yet. But for now, the growth and decay of the cells have already stopped and that is enough for him.
As he was checking the woman, he noticed that the time is already 1 p.m.
This made him a bit dumbfounded.
"I've slept for quite sometimes didn't I?" he asked the woman who nodded in response.
"Thank you…"
"Nah, I'm happy to be of help… Hehe…"
"Oh… here… give this to Doctor Gale. These vials should be given to you once every 3 days at the time I gave you that IV…" Curt said as he took out a small bag filled with vials.
"Give it to me, why are you giving it to the patient." Suddenly a man's voice said as he extended his hand to grab the small bag.
It was Doctor Gale who just entered the room followed by the woman's husband.
After some pleasantries and receiving the grateful expression of the couple, Curt and Doctor Dale walked out of the room and went to his office.
Curt sat on the soft chair while looking at a document.
"Curt… I wanted you to work in this hospital… I will provide everything you need. Just… just help with those hopeless cases that we have. And for the compensation…"
"Alright, as I told you… 10,000 credit is all I needed. No matter what type of difficult illness the patient has… this is my only condition. Plus… I will just work part-time. I will need that job at the store you know."
Vince Gale almost laughed at what Curt said. How could he be a part-time doctor and a full-time service crew? This contrast of profession would make a lot of people scold this odd young man. But he would not. Vince knew that Curt has a passion for doing some things.
He has visited that store and has discovered a lot of miraculous objects in there that would make an esper be curious and jealous at the same time. Plus he truly likes Curt's humble disposition and helpful attitude, hence he would not dare laugh at his decisions.
In fact, he is seeing the young man as his younger self. And those were the times when he was full of passion and dreams for his bright future.
Curt signed at the bottom of the documents and handed them to Vince.
"Well… as part of my team, I would like to welcome you … Doctor Nilfiem," Vince said with a smile while Curt just scratches his nose with an awkward expression.
Who would have thought that a nobody like him would be called a doctor?
