Daniel was born to a dark brown man named, Carlos. Carlos was born in Cuba, a place where he met his wife, Aleja. Aleja was a fair skinned woman with a light brown complexion. She was a very quiet woman.

She was always scared about the future.

They were 4 years apart, with Carlos being born in 1970 and Aleja being born in 1974.

After a few years of being together, Aleja became pregnant.

They were both very scared.

They became afraid that their child would not have a future.

Cuba was not the place that they wanted to raise their child.

Carlos contemplated leaving for America and leaving his family here in Cuba.

Aleja thought that this was a very bad decision.

They both had no other family to take care of them in case something went wrong.

She worried he would die crossing the border or be captured.

She thought that they should all go together, or all stay.

Carlos fought with her day and night.

Aleja would cry many times, but she never backed down.

Her crying and desperation would make Carlos feel very guilty, she would always bring up his death and what it would mean for their family.

It would spell disaster and would mean Aleja would struggle to raise their child for the rest of her life.

Carlos contemplated this, he thought about what could happen to Aleja. He did not want to think about what other men would do to her.

*****************************************************************************

Carlos would think everyday.

He contemplated, driving himself sick with the decision.

He had no time.

Soon his wife's belly would grow too big to make the trek.

*************************************************************************

Carlos told his wife that they would begin to run everyday, in the morning.

She did not question him.

They ran 5 miles on the first day.

They then ran 6.3 miles the next day.

Eventually by the 3rd month of Aleja's pregnancy, they were able to run 10 miles without stopping.

Carlos would push Aleja everyday to run more, Aleja would tear up many times at the task.

During these 3 months, Carlos would research about the trek by asking friends and people who had knowledge about the coyote. After, preparing for as long as he could, he decided that it was now or never and they began their journey towards America.
