The forest was a tangled mess of shadows and vines, the smell of damp earth heavy in the air as I stood and dusted myself off. Erin rose beside me, her usual calm demeanor intact, her oversized green hoodie hanging awkwardly off her frame.
I stretched, cracking my neck. "Let's go now," I said, voice low but confident.
She nodded, stepping closer. Her silence was unnerving sometimes. Most people in this world babbled nervously, but Erin? She was an enigma, trapped in her own mind.
We trudged through the underbrush for what felt like hours. The trees closed in on us, their gnarled branches twisting into dark, skeletal shapes. Finally, we reached a broken rope bridge hanging precariously over a deep ravine. I stepped closer, examining the frayed ropes. It looked like someone had deliberately sabotaged it. My stomach twisted at the thought.
"Looks like someone set this up as a trap," I muttered, glancing at Erin. "Maybe Ash, Misty, and Brock got caught in it."
Her response was typical Erin—calm, blunt. "They safe?"
I smirked, though there was no real humor in it. "They will be. Nothing can happen to them." I flicked the frayed rope with my fingers. "The real issue is how we're getting across this bridge."
"Jump."
I blinked, turning to her. "You serious?"
Her hazel eyes didn't waver. "Serious."
I let out a sharp breath, shaking my head. Erin had a way of simplifying the absurd. She didn't understand the danger. Hell, she didn't understand anything when it came to this world's risks. Ignoring her, I scanned the surroundings for another way across. But there wasn't one.
I let out a chuckle, a plan forming in my mind. I turned back to her, a mischievous grin tugging at my lips. "Looks like we don't have much choice."
She instinctively took a step back.
Without a word, I pulled out Pidgeot's Pokéball, tossing it into the air. He emerged with a powerful flap of his wings, sending a gust of wind swirling around us. His sharp eyes focused on me, waiting for a command.
"Don't come too close for now," I warned him. Pidgeot hesitated but obeyed, hovering just out of reach.
I turned back to Erin, who stood frozen, eyes wide. Without hesitation, I scooped her up, holding her in a princess carry. Her body stiffened, too stunned to resist.
"Alright, Pidgeot!" I called. "Come closer."
Pidgeot swooped down, and with Erin still in my arms, I jumped onto his back.
"Don't do this. Boyfriend," Erin said, her voice flat, but the slight tremor betrayed her discomfort.
I couldn't help but grin wider. "I don't have a choice. We need to cross this bridge, and you need to hold on tight, or I won't even have your bones to return to your grandfather."
Her grip tightened around me. For the first time, I saw something flicker across her usually serene face—fear mixed with something else. Excitement?
"Alright, Pidgeot, take to the skies," I commanded. The large bird rose effortlessly, the ground shrinking beneath us as we ascended into the sky.
Erin's voice, calm as always, came from somewhere near my chest. "Don't drop me."
I laughed. "Does any boyfriend drop his girlfriend?"
"Don't know," she replied.
"I won't," I said with a grin. "If I acknowledge the relationship."
Her grip tightened even more as we soared through the sky. The wind whipped against my face, the forest below turning into a green blur. As we flew, something caught my eye—a large mechanical structure below, with familiar figures dancing on top.
Team Rocket.
I groaned inwardly. Of course, they were here.
"Pidgeot, take us lower," I instructed. We swooped down toward them, and I called out, voice loud over the wind, "You guys should quit this gig and take up dancing or acting! And hand over that Meowth while you're at it!"
The three villains froze mid-dance, staring up at me in disbelief. Meowth scoffed, his voice thick with sarcasm. "Why're you so obsessed with catchin' me? I haven't done anything."
I shrugged. "You seem smart, funny, interesting—lots of reasons."
Jessie and James snapped back to reality. "Hey, kid, why are you even here?" Jessie demanded.
"I've been traveling with Ash for a while, you know?" I said smoothly.
They muttered something under their breath. At that moment, the floor beneath the structure opened, and out popped Ash—along with a wild Bulbasaur. Ash looked up, his face a mix of confusion and surprise.
"What are you doing here?" he called up.
"Looking for you, Misty, and Brock," I replied, still holding Erin tightly. "You left us behind, remember?"
Ash scratched the back of his head sheepishly. "Sorry about that, I got distracted."
I nodded, turning back to Team Rocket. "It's been a while since I last sent you flying."
Their faces paled, recognition dawning in their eyes. They knew what was coming. The wind began to howl around us, whipping through the trees as I leaned forward, gripping Pidgeot's feathers. He tensed beneath me, his wings spreading wide.
"Alright, buddy," I muttered. "Let's do this."
Pidgeot let out a sharp screech, his eyes narrowing. The air around us thickened, swirling with energy.
"Tailwind!" I commanded. Pidgeot flapped his wings, creating a powerful gust that propelled us forward. The wind roared in my ears as we surged toward Team Rocket.
"Now, Whirlwind!"
With another mighty flap, Pidgeot summoned a spiraling vortex of wind. Dust and leaves whipped through the air, twisting into a chaotic funnel.
"Twister, now!"
The vortex compressed, gaining speed as it tore through the clearing. Team Rocket had no chance. They were caught in the storm, their screams barely audible over the howling winds.
"Bring it home, Pidgeot—Hurricane!" I roared.
Pidgeot unleashed the full force of the skies. The Twister exploded outward, transforming into a full-blown hurricane. The winds tore through the clearing, uprooting trees and sending debris flying. Team Rocket screamed, blasted skyward in a blur of color.
As the storm settled, I glanced down at Erin. She was unconscious, her head resting against my chest.
I sighed, shaking my head. "You really need to toughen up, Erin."
Pidgeot glided toward the ground, and I held her closer, wondering what kind of mess we were stepping into next.
