Chapter 79: Mermaid Camie
Green hair, pink fish tail, looking like she's only around ten years old, but she's definitely a mermaid.
"Yes, I'm Camie, a mermaid. Thank you for saving me," Little Camie thanked politely, "Because I sometimes get confused, I'm easily eaten by sea beasts. I almost got digested just now."
Although aware that mermaids exist in this world, it's still astonishing when one appears before you. So, Camie stood surrounded by three people in silence.
Two seconds later, Camie's eyes suddenly bulged, her mouth wide open, a shocked expression on her face as she exclaimed, "Human beings! You scared me!"
Adrian let go of Camie's hand, tapping his ear, a cute little girl indeed, though quite jumpy with her words, "You don't have to be so loud, we won't harm you."
Camie slid into the sea, accidentally knocking Tom back in, but she didn't notice, "You won't hurt me? That's great."
Rui Mengmeng looked at the mermaid girl, "You believe so easily?"
Artoria said solemnly, "She seems easily fooled."
"Ah!? I've been fooled!?" Camie's expression exaggerated.
"I didn't trick you." Adrian facepalmed, wondering whether she was a mermaid or a Dugong, she was so naive that it made him want to joke, "Since you're so easily eaten, why would you wander around alone outside?"
"Because... it hurts so much!!" Camie suddenly leaped over three meters high from the sea, and if you looked closely, you'd see a cat hanging from her tail.
Adrian quickly caught both of them, "Tom, let go quickly, she's not a fish!"
Tom held onto Camie's tail, his little eyes seemed to say, "You're fooling me, that tail is clearly a fish."
"Mermaids can't be eaten..." Adrian sighed in resignation, "Come down, let's figure out how to deal with that sea beast."
Tom reluctantly let go of Camie's tail, and Adrian apologized to her, "Sorry, sorry, my cat thought you were a regular fish."
Camie's teary eyes hid behind Artoria, she felt safe with this sister, "It hurts, is this a cat? It's so scary."
Living on Fishman Island, merfolk were largely isolated from the world. They'd hardly seen animals or plants from the surface, and cats were likely among the things they hadn't encountered.
Artoria patted Camie's head, comforting her, "Don't be afraid, Tom's cooking is delicious."
What a peculiar way to comfort someone, why would cooking being good make her not scared? Adrian internally complained.
"Oh, so I don't need to be scared." Camie patted her chest, feeling relieved.
Tom smiled kindly at the right moment, completely dispelling Camie's fear.
That's effective comforting! Adrian still didn't quite understand their odd thought processes, he glanced at Rui Mengmeng, who seemed equally shocked.
At least there are normal people too, Adrian felt relieved.
A few minutes later, they set up a barbecue grill by the shore, observing Tom cooking sea monster meat and some shellfish.
Of course, Tom hadn't forgotten the crabs he'd worked hard to catch. He set up another pot nearby, preparing to cook them for revenge.
The sea monster meat was freshly sourced, and Adrian, curious about his own strength, took out a sword and swung it with all his might at the sea monster's body. A wound over a meter long and several tens of centimeters deep appeared on its body.
Adrian estimated that this kind of injury wouldn't be very effective unless it hit a vital spot. But for smaller sea creatures, he'd likely be capable enough.
Camie carefully followed Artoria onto the shore. For her, stepping onto Sabaody Island was almost a dream come true.
After all, she'd been taught from a young age to never step foot on the island. Both fishmen and merfolk faced discrimination, with many believing they carried diseases. This prejudice was especially pronounced on Sabaody Island.
Actually, Fishman Island had established diplomatic relations with the World Government about 200 years ago. Since then, discrimination against fishmen and merfolk had been gradually decreasing worldwide.
However, on Sabaody Island, they were still viewed as mere fish, a lower race. They were considered expendable and could be freely bought and hunted.
For most fishmen and merfolk, this place was a "forbidden zone." If Camie were alone, she wouldn't dare to set foot on the island.
"Smells great! So Tom really is good at cooking." After introductions, Camie quickly blended in with the group, despite her absent-mindedness.
Tom wore a proud expression, loving to hear praise.
Adrian returned to the previous topic, "You didn't finish explaining. With so many dangerous sea creatures outside, why did you come here alone, Camie?"
"I sneaked out to play. Actually, the fastest swimmer in the sea is the mermaid. If I don't daydream, I won't be eaten." Camie felt somewhat embarrassed.
Tom perked up his ears. The fastest swimmer? He'd have to race her later.
Camie continued, "Also, this is my dream."
"Dream? Just to set foot on this island?" Rui Mengmeng, who had arrived not too long ago, had limited knowledge about the discrimination against fishmen.
"Yeah, I've floated to the surface before. I've always dreamed of riding the Ferris wheel at Sabaody Island Park." Camie sounded downcast, she shifted her pink fish tail, "But it's impossible."
Tom placed the scallops on the grill. Soon, they'd open their shells, their flesh cooked by the heat, and topped with garlic and vermicelli, filling the air with fragrance.
Oysters, or mollusks, could be cooked the same way, or cracked open and eaten raw. Adrian couldn't handle the latter, preferring cooked food.
He served a plate of grilled scallops to Camie, his expression a mix of politeness and perhaps an apology.
"Thank you." Camie cautiously tasted a scallop. As the meat touched her tongue, her previous dejection vanished. "It's so delicious!"
Camie didn't eat fish, favoring shellfish and kelp-based foods. Her usual menu consisted of grilled kelp, seaweed egg custard, scallop sandwiches, and clam meat pizza.
Tom's grilled scallops suited her taste perfectly, allowing her to enjoy them fully.
Soon, everyone else began eating with joy. Although the seafood was ordinary, not Sea King-class, it could still fetch a good price.
Human and cat joys don't quite align; Tom, facing a pot of cooked crabs, felt troubled. After boiling, the green crabs had turned red, and he couldn't tell which ones had pinched his butt or his nose. How could he take revenge now?
(Camie did indeed secretly float to the surface as a child, looking at Sabaody Island Park with great anticipation. She'd been eaten by various sea creatures over twenty times and captured by human traffickers over thirty times. Surviving was a miracle.)
